Hot rod magazine power tour 1997.

hot rod power tour 1999

I got my 55 Chevy put together and running just in time to go on the first leg of the 1996 Hot Rod magazine Power Tour. It was so much fun that I decided I had to go all the way the next year. So, I spent the spring of 1997 doing work on the car getting it ready. I got the seats upholstered by Dave's Upholstery, built the roll bar using Ross's bender, overhauled the transmission, rebuilt the front suspension, swapped the 3.25 gears for 2.75s, and did the two tone primer job. Ross had been doing my machine work for years, he's a gearhead like me, and he had the opportunity to take off two weeks to go on the dream cruise--so off we went to LA to begin our adventure.

Day 1 , Los Angeles, California, Thursday, May 8

Day 2 , Las Vegas, Nevada, Friday, May 9

Day 3 , Grand Junction, Colorado, Saturday, May 10

Day 4 , Denver, Colorado, Sunday, May 11

Day 5 , Goodland, Kansas, Monday, May 12

Day 6 , Kansas City, Kansas, Tuesday, May 13

Day 7 , St Louis, Missouri, Wednesday, May 14

Day 8 , Springfield, Illinois, Thursday, May 15

Day 9 , Lansing, Illinois, Friday, May 16

Day 10 , Mount Clemens, Michigan, Saturday, May 17

The drive home took a couple days. We went 5500 miles, averaged 11.23 mpg, and had more fun than you can count.

The write up in Hot Rod magazine, in the September issue.

hot rod power tour 1999

I think I'll try the first day and maybe the second. Bought my Elky in Ga., it might want to go home for a visit! :inlove:

hot rod power tour 1999

Sure gota think about all or part when it starts in your home state, sure don't like the Detroit ending for more than one reason. This will be a one week long Region 6 meet, what do you think Neil, Lenny, Glenn, Randy, Ed, Tony and any other Florida Elky's any or all stops ?????

hot rod power tour 1999

C to N Cocoa to Nashville sounds good to me! I've been wanting to go on the Power Tour, missed it when it was here last but will do everything in my power to make this one.

hot rod power tour 1999

I'm with tony. Would do the Cocoa to Nashville legs, separate and head into Ky to kids and relatives for a few days.

hot rod power tour 1999

Guess I'll stick the Sun Pass on the windshield and head that way. The wife just loves stopping at the most magical place on earth (me not so much).:texas: I could make it to Nashville myself.

Three tickets to Nashville so far, sounds just right and long enough, "more tickets available"

This sounds good to me . I will do the tour from Cocoa Beach to Nashville . It is almost 740 miles round trip from the Florida Keys just to Cocoa, ( and the trip back home ) , so I don`t think I would go past Nashville . Skinyfisher contacted me and is chasing down hotel info etc. and it would be cool to try and stay at the same hotel if possible . More later .

hot rod power tour 1999

Yeah... there's a lot of comments on that on just about every car forum, and I'm not sure what the deal is with their repetition on the routes. They never hit New England either. Some say it's all about the money and that the majority of participants live in the eastern half of the US. I'm not so sure about that.

The stops take into consideration the overall room cost that is why the stop did not go to Palm Beach International Raceway as the rooms are high and really spread out and if you go to the lowe rate hotels you may not have a car/wheels in the AM. This year the Tour realy blooked out the roomsewvewrwhere, I called to go direct and got higher rates so I used the Tour booking site real easy and no phone calls and a big selection. The West coast !!! the TOUR is afraid of an Earth Quake and the coast sliding off into the salt water and rusting the cars!!!!!!!! (I m a native SOCAL left in 95)

skinyfisher said: The West coast !!! the TOUR is afraid of an Earth Quake and the coast sliding off into the salt water and rusting the cars!!!!!!!! (I m a native SOCAL left in 95) Click to expand...

The bay area is full of fault lines so earthquakes are kinda common lol I have felt like 2 or 3 in my 19 years of life. Last big one was in 89, remember the world series got delayed cuz of it. But there's no salt here! Lol there's not a spot of rust on any of my cars! Hahaha ok maybe tiny spots There would be just as much support out here on the west coast though, they just gotta do it. Like that saying "build it and they will come" I think they are just overall jealous of the west coast so they make it on the east coast to have something to brag about hahaha

Let see I was born Cal left in 95 My wife lost her apt in the 71 Sylmar Quake and 94 Northridge Quake cost me to rebuild my life due to more dameage than I can write down, but we did and survived, sold out and left in late 95. I still love SOCAL as it was prior to the mids 90's, but you can have it now, I will visit my kids. I agree that the west coast and western states could do the Tour just as well and with equal amounts of cars, maybe more RUST as eastern cars have "none", as they are protected with a coat of "BS". However if the TOUR goes out west I would send a friend in my place cause that is just to many miles and I am not doing that one 2500 just to get there and 2500 back plus the Tour! PASS

hot rod power tour 1999

i'm thinking a few days off for the1st 2 or 3 legs might be good for my soul. drove along a ittle way when it started out in kissemmee a few years back. it was pretty cool seeing all those hot rods on the road at one time for miles and miles!

Hotel Reservations Made! I got a place to sleep from Cocoa to Nashville!

Tony Send me an email with some phone numbers and dates.

Just got back in town and catching up on the posts. I want to do at least the first day maybe to Nashville. Anyone need a roommate? Or get me the info of where you are staying.

I am looking for a roomy for the trip. You want to make the reservations or do you want me to?

hot rod power tour 1999

They are probably afraid to run into snow in the NorthEast ! ! They should should plan a Tour with multi start points - like the spokes on a wheel - all headed for the hub... I've always wanted to do the Power Tour

el Bandido said: I've always wanted to do the Power Tour Click to expand...

hmm two stops in detroit, i think i can make a trip home i was thinking of going to detroit for the dream cruise but this would be cool as hell to do too!!!

If at all possible , this is an event that everyone should do , even if it is just for a couple of stops . I did part of the 06 Tour from Kissimmee to Gainesville , Fl. and then on to Perry , Ga . It was unbelievable ! The ingenuity , workmanship and dedication that went into these rides was inspiring . Not just to see vehicles sitting in a parking lot but to hear , feel , see them driving and be a part of the experience . SSR71 said it right , that everyone should do it at least once in their life . The variety ranged from Grandma`s grocery getter to daily drivers to show cars to all out tire shredders . As Skinyfisher said , in addition to all the planned events , there was a car show every night at each hotel . Make your plans now so you will not have to later kick yourself in the bungie for not going . There is also discussion going on in Region 6 , Fl. forums and the conservation will increase as June gets closer . Go to www.hotrod.com for the 2011 coverage and past years photos . This opportunity may not be available next year . In addition to the other rides , how cool would it be to meet up and roll out with other El Caminos ? :smileyb:

I am both sadden and depressed but due to family and financial needs will not be able to join you guys on the Tour this year .We have had a full year of trips and shows this past year and look forward to others coming up but just have to bail on this one . I hope you all have a great time and I wish someone will put up some info and photos on your fabulous adventure .

Hi all, According to Hot Rod Mag - they try to find venues large enough for the amount of daily participants, less than 300 miles apart so the daily run is not too long, and with numerous affordable hotels close-by. That is the main reason for repeat venues. The center of the country thing has come up many times and their answer is that if it is in the middle of the country, more participants will come as they will not have to make a 4000 mile round trip . . . although California to Florida is like 2500 miles, so that doesn't really hold now does it? I have done 4 Power Tours - three as a Long Hauler - twice in my Elky, twice in my Solstice. I will be going this year from Port Canaveral to Indianapolis. Not sure which car as the 79 El Camino is missing an engine at the moment . . .

Going! Going on the tour but most likely not taking the elky. My nephew Mathew (Carreterita) is going with me and I'm picking up one of my grandsons in Valdosta so there's no room for all. Looking forward to it! Tony.

I am in the same boat that Lenny is this year and will not be attending the Power Tour. With some major business loses and my engine break it is just a burden on the pocket. The group has had two great meets and one more that will be just as fun in Cocoa. I have done the Tour before and all going will just have a great time.

I am doing the 2 Michigan stops but not in the el camino

has anyone seen an actual map from HOT ROD of the route and roads the tour will be taking? i've seen some guesses on other sites, but they all are using major highways, i.e. the interstate. i can't believe HOT ROD would put this all together and have us going on the interstate instead of a lot of 'cool back roads' kind of route. surely, they have a good route in mind. i can get us thru FL on some nice neat roads, but once we get to GA, AL, TN and so forth i'll have no idea. i've been to these states, though it's been a long time, and i know there is nice scenery other than interstate billboards.:dontknow:
