This day is a blend of trek preparation and cultural exploration, ensuring a well-rounded experience for you.

Day 05: Karimabad - Hoper valley - Barpu Giram

Today's itinerary includes a drive to Hoper Valley , a brief one-hour journey. Leaving Hopper, we embark on a journey that involves crossing the Bualter Glacier. We trek along the grassy hillside, high above the Barpu Glacier. After approximately 4 hours, we arrive at the small shepherd's settlement of Hapukun, and one hour later, we reach Hamdar. This leg of the journey can take anywhere from 4 to 5 hours, depending on the route chosen. Our campsite is nestled between the Bualter and Barpu Glaciers at an altitude of 3000 meters. We'll spend the night camping at Barpo Giram.

Day 06: Barpo Giram – Brikchour (4/6 hrs)

Crossing the Barpu Glacier is relatively easier than the Bualter, and the trek takes us through an ablation valley of the Barpu. A significant point is the shepherd's settlement at Chukutans, where we'll stop for lunch. This marks the beginning of a well-maintained path that leads us all the way to Brikchour. The journey to the Brikchour campsite takes approximately 5 hours and offers beautiful views of Ultar, Diran, and Spantik peaks. We'll spend the night camping at Brikchour.

Day 07: Brikchour – Rush Lake (5/6 hrs)

Today's leg of the journey involves a steep and relentless climb. The trail ascends in a series of zigzags directly behind camp, gaining 700 meters in elevation along a dry and dusty path with limited rest stops. The trail leads to the crest of the ridge separating the Barpu Glacier valley from the Hispar Glacier to the North. We then turn southward, following the broad crest of this ridge, ascending grass-covered slopes and passing along the shores of Rush Lake (4,660 meters). The final climb of the summit cone is the most challenging part, requiring careful ascent. This day's journey to Rush Lake takes about 6 hours, offering outstanding views of the peaks above the Hispar Glacier. We'll spend the night camping at Rush Lake.

Day 08: Rush Lake – Rush Peak Ascent (5095 m)

Today, an early start is essential for our peak ascent, ensuring the best chance of clear skies and optimal views of distant peaks. With favorable conditions, we should reach the summit in approximately 3-4 hours. The trail is relatively easy for most of the way, with grass-covered slopes and a trail along the shores of Rush Lake. The final 150-meter climb to the summit cone requires careful navigation. The round trip takes about 5-7 hours. We'll spend the night camping at Rush Lake.

Day 09: TRush Lake – Gutons (3/4 hrs)

The morning is free for excursions, photography, nature watching, and hiking. In the afternoon, we begin our descent, following the same path we ascended earlier. The descent is steep and dusty, with a very direct path that drops 900 meters in a short distance. This descent will take approximately 3-4 hours. We'll spend the night in Gutons.

Day 10: Gutons – Hopper – Gulmit/Ghulkin/Passu

Today, our route takes us on the east side of the Barpu Glacier, a different path from our ascent to Rush Lake. We pass through several large flat areas of grassland surrounded by trees. The route follows the ablation valley on the East side of the Barpu Glacier. In about 4 hours, we return to Hoper village after crossing the challenging Bualter Glacier and a final steep climb up a moraine. After lunch, we'll depart for Gulmit, with a stop at Attabad Lake en route. Upon arrival in Gulmit, we'll check in at the hotel, where we'll spend the night.

Day 11: Ghulkin/Gulmit/Passu

Rush Lake Trek Tips for Trekkers

  • Water is not available throughout the trek so make sure to carry your own the bottle and keep refilling it where possible
  • Trekking poles for the descends is important especially if you are not a frequent trekker. The slopes as difficult to climb but are also brutal when descending.
  • Make sure to carry medicine, the altitude increases rapidly and you might feel altitude sickness and headaches.
  • Pack warm clothes jackets and winter sleeping bags as the temperature drops several degrees during the night.
  • Find out about the weather forecast to ensure that you do not end up trekking in snowy and freezing weather. Snowy weather at high altitude causes the temperature to drop to minus Celcius. Without proper camping and cooking gear, cold weather will be very challenging.
  • Do not attempt to cross the glacier without a guide. These glaciers move frequently throughout the day and novice trekkers will not be able to cross it without help.
  • Start your day early to trek before the sun comes up. There are no shades on the trail and the scorching sun will make it harder for you to trek.

Details Itinerary

Day 1 Islamabad: Your journey begins with a warm welcome from the HunzaAdventure Tours team at Islamabad International Airport. We will assist you with your luggage and transport you to a centrally located hotel in Islamabad.

Day 2 Islamabad – Chilas: Today, we embark on a drive to Chilas along the scenic Karakorum Highway. Along the way, we'll make a stop at the Shatial rock carving, a historical site. Afterward, we continue our journey to Chilas and check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 3 Chilas – Karimabad Hunza: After breakfast, we set off for Karimabad Hunza. En route, we'll pause at the junction point of three magnificent mountain ranges that converge at one spot. We'll also take a lunch break at the Rakaposhi viewpoint, offering stunning vistas. Finally, we reach Karimabad Hunza, check in at our hotel, and enjoy an overnight stay.

Day 4 Karimabad Hunza – Hopper Valley: Today's exploration takes us to the Baltit and Altit forts. Afterward, we embark on a short trek along the Barbar water channel, which provides irrigation for fields and households. This trek rewards us with breathtaking views of Diran Peak, Golden Peak, and Rakaposhi. In the afternoon, we head to Hoper Nagar through an exciting 100-minute jeep journey across the picturesque Hunza and Nagar valleys. We stay in a modest lodge on the outskirts of the village.

Day 5 Hopper Valley – Barpo Giram: Leaving Hopar behind, we cross the Bualter Glacier and trek on the grassy hillside above the Barpu Glacier. After about 4 hours, we arrive at the small shepherd's settlement of Hapukun, followed by Hamdar. Crossing the Bualter Glacier (which may take 4 to 5 hours, depending on the route), we reach our campsite nestled between the Bualter and Barpu Glaciers at 3000 meters. We'll spend the night camping at Barpo Giram.

Day 6 Barpo Giram – Brikchour: Crossing the Barpu Glacier is relatively easier than the Bualter, and we walk through an ablation valley of the Barpu. We'll enjoy a lunch break at the shepherd's settlement of Chukutans, which marks the beginning of a much-improved path leading to Brikchour. After approximately 5 hours of trekking, we reach the Brikchour campsite, with stunning views of Ultar, Diran, and Spantik peaks. Camping overnight at Brikchour.

Day 7 Brikchour – Rush Lake: Today, we face a challenging, steep climb. The trail ascends in a series of zigzags behind the camp, gaining 700 meters along a dry and dusty path. This path leads to the crest of the ridge that separates the Barpu Glacier valley from the Hispar Glacier to the north. The trail then turns southwards and follows the broad crest of this ridge for another 350 meters, leading to the Chiden Haral campsite. This hike takes about 6 hours and offers outstanding views of the peaks above the Hispar Glacier. You'll spend the night camping at Rush Lake.

Day 8 Rush Lake – Rush Peak Ascent (5095m): Today, an early start is essential for our peak ascent, allowing for clear skies and the best views of distant peaks. With favorable conditions, we should reach the summit in about 3-4 hours. The trail is relatively easy for most of the way, ascending grass-covered slopes and passing along the shores of Rush Lake. The most challenging section is the final 150-meter climb of the summit cone, which should be approached with care. You'll spend the night camping at Rush Lake.

Day 9 Rush Lake – Gutons: The morning is free for excursions, photography, nature watching, and hiking. In the afternoon, we'll begin our descent along the same path we ascended earlier. The terrain is steep and dusty, as the path is very direct, dropping 900 meters over a short distance. This descent will take 3-4 hours, and you'll stay overnight in Gutons.

Day 10 Gutons – Hoppar – Gulmit: Today, we walk on the east side of the Barpu Glacier, a different route from when we initially ascended to Rush Lake. Along the way, we'll pass several large flat grassland areas surrounded by trees. The route follows the ablation valley on the east side of the Barpu Glacier. After approximately 4 hours of trekking, we return to Hoper village, crossing the challenging Bualter Glacier and a final steep climb up a moraine. After lunch, we'll depart for Gulmit, making a stop at Attabad Lake on our way. Upon arrival in Gulmit, you'll check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 11 Passu – Borith – Suspension Bridges: This day is filled with fascinating experiences. We'll begin by driving to Hussaini Village, where we'll visit the Hussaini suspension bridges. Next, we'll drive up to Upper Borith and take a short walk to the viewpoint overlooking Passu Glacier. After that, we'll drive to Passu village and have a village tour. Following the tour, we'll return to Gulmit for an overnight stay in Upper Hunza Valley.

Day 12 Excursion – Khunjerab Pass: Today, we embark on a full-day excursion to Khunjerab Pass, which serves as the border between Pakistan and China. Khunjerab Pass is the highest point on the Karakoram Highway, sitting at an altitude of 4733 meters. This route offers a scenic drive with spectacular views of the Karakoram and distant Pamir mountain ranges. At Khunjerab, now a national park, you may spot wildlife such as Marco Polo Sheep, Snow leopards, and Himalayan Ibexes. In the evening, we'll return to the hotel, making stops at Borith Lake and the Hussaini Suspension bridges on the way. You'll spend the night in Gulmit, Upper Hunza Valley.

Day 13 Gilgit – Islamabad – Besham: Today, we depart for Islamabad via a scenic flight. In the event of unfavorable weather conditions, we'll travel on the Karakoram Highway to Besham, offering captivating landscapes. Along the way, you'll witness towering, snow-capped mountains rising from deep valleys and lush alpine meadows adorned with colorful wildflowers and apple blossoms. The route is dotted with terraced villages, preserving traditional farming methods and lifestyles that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Upon arrival in Besham, you'll check in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 14 Besham – Islamabad: We continue our journey with a drive to Islamabad, making a stop to visit the Taxila museum along the way. In Islamabad, we'll explore key landmarks, including the Shah Faisal Mosque, Pakistan Monument, and Daman-e-Koh. The day concludes with a farewell dinner party, and we'll drop you off at the airport for your return flight home.

Karakorum Expeditions recommends the Rush Lake trek for you if you desire to get the authentic savors of a Himalayan trekking. Situated in the heart of Hunza Valley, Rush Lake is one of the most coveted destinations among international tourists, especially among adventure lovers.

To trek to the Rush Lake, you will find yourself drifting through a not so dangerous glacier, lush green  pastures and meadows , and beautiful fields. One factor that determines why this destination is popular among trekkers is that you get amazing, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains from this high point.

Except for crossing the glacier, the trek to Rush Lake is mostly easy and modest. We recommend this trek for even the first time adventurers. The good news is that you will stumble upon a lush green valley on the way where you will get to see large flocks of cattle being grazed by their herders. In simple terms, you will experience a completely organic lifestyle during your trek to Rush Lake.

The Rush Lake is the trekkers’  ultimate reward  with all its beauty and sparkles. Once you reach your destination, you will feel excited, full of energy and interested in exploring the surrounding areas. Another reward: you will get picturesque views of the beautiful, 5098 meters Rush Peak.

Food and Meal Plan

During the Trek, participants will be served all three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The food will include combination of Pakistani and foreign meals made of ingredients bought in Pakistan. Breakfasts will include coffee, tea, cereals, eggs, porridge/muesli, chappatti/bread. During trekking, lunches will be eaten during lunch breaks with options from tinned/canned meals (fish, meat), crackers, pickles, cheese, chapatti, pate etc. Depending on the weather, the lunches start with or sometimes end with soup, coffee or tea, juices etc. Dinner is always eaten in mess tent which is freshly prepared by our cooks travelling with us. During the initial days of trekking, fresh vegetables are also cooked until they remain fresh. Vegetarians must inform our office in advance if they want their entire meals to be vegetarian.

Iodine treated drinking water will be made available in the mornings, during breaks and while camping. Everyone will be drinking spring water when available but at other times, we do not have options other than consuming glacial melt water that might consist of silt. Our kitchen uses a large container for water supply that helps in settling down the silt at the bottom. If you do not like the odor of iodine, you might want to bring your own supply of bi-carbonate of soda. Conventional methods work well for everyone but we keep on experimenting new methods.

Arrival in Islamabad Pakistan and Airport Transfer

All our guests must arrive on day 1 at Benazir International Airport, Islamabad (Pakistan’s capital). Our guide/staff will be waiting for you outside the international arrivals gate in the airport premises who will take you to the hotel. All guests must notify us if they do not need transfers from airport. Guests must also submit their inbound and outbound flight details to our office two days before their arrival in Pakistan. Once you confirm your registration and make payment, more details including names and contacts numbers will be sent to you. Airport transfers will also be provided on the last day.

Accommodation

We arrange stays at standard hotels in Islamabad and our hotel picks in Hunza/Skardu are always one of the best in town. Rooms at our selected hotels will be provided on twin-sharing basis and will have en-suite amenities. During camping days, you will also be sharing a two-person tent. If you are traveling alone, you will be teamed with one of the other participants (of the same sex) for room and tent sharing. However you can get separate hotel rooms and separate tents for additional cost but both require booking in advance. Extended hotel reservations in Islamabad are possible.

A typical Day

On all trekking days, your guide will wake you up for warm tea or coffee followed by a good breakfast inside the mess tent(s). You will have time before breakfast to pack your bags again. Camp will be closed after breakfast and porters will get to work carrying supplies and luggage ahead of guests to arrive at the lunch site and prepare meals. Porters will repeat the same “trek-earlier” approach for dinner preparations. We will generally hike for 3-4 hours before lunch. Lunch normally takes at least one hour so it is a good time to gain your strength back, read, write etc.

Trekking after lunch break in the afternoon will generally be shorter than first half of the day. Once you reach the next camp, camps will either be setup or in the process and kitchen crew would serve a hot beverage first and dinner will be served when its ready. One can rest, socialize, read, write, and photograph etc upon reaching a camp. Temperature normally decreases at night and participants can get cozy in their personal sleeping bags before getting enough sleep for the next day.

Domestic Flights

In order to reach your destination (northern areas), we will be taking a flight which is subject to weather as the valley is surround by mountains and requires high visibility for any flight to operate. Due to the weather factor, no flights are guaranteed to operate. Flights to your destination do operate often but there are always chances for cancellations and in that case we keep road transport as backup and on standby. We cannot take the risk of waiting for another day in Islamabad for another flight for good reasons including complex airline booking system, tourist traffic flow in flights etc. Please beware of other trekking companies offering Trek that might keep you waiting in Islamabad in hopes of flights and end up not completing your long-awaited trek on time.

Karakorum Highway (In case of Flight Cancellation)

We advise all our guests to read foreign travel advices on their respective country’s foreign office websites. Travel advice for EU residents from their home country to your destination country (Pakistan) can be found on the European Commission website. Participants from other countries can look up on relevant websites or search “foreign office travel advice”. Most websites advice against travelling by road in Pakistan and some websites don’t seem updated. Please take note that incase one or both internal flights cancel, we will drive on Karakoram Highway and then via Gilgit-Skardu road to Skardu. This route is available on Google maps

Journey on Karakoram Highway is one of the best experiences in Pakistan for any foreign or domestic tourist, providing views of amazing natural environment and indigenous people throughout the road trip and never has any of our guest openly regretted traveling by KKH. We strongly advise that you contact and gain more information from your travel insurance company regarding road traveling coverage. If your company does not offer full coverage for your trekking holiday, you might look for other companies. For example in UK,  British Mountaineering Council  offers good solutions.

Guide (Leader) and Group Assistance Staff

All participants will be managed by our professional guide for the whole trekking holiday. They will be licensed and recognized from Pakistan’s Ministry of Tourism. Our guide will be the focal person for communication, assistance, help and complaints during the Trek. Our guides have vast experience with foreign clients and can communicate in English. They have been trained to interact with participants in a professional manner and we will appreciate if you keep the relationship friendly and yet professional. If you are a big private group from one country speaking a different language (for example Spanish), we can try rescheduling our guides speaking your language (if available). You will also be accompanied by kitchen crew, assistant(s) depending on the group size and last but not the least, porters.

These tough local porters belong to different villages of the surrounding areas and are mostly small subsistence farmers. They wait for foreign tourists to arrive so that they can earn and compliment to their existing income while their kids look after their small farms. Naturally they are tourist-friendly people who also have fun during trekking by having laughs and dancing to local songs when they get a chance. These porters and their elders have been doing it for decades and watching the porters at work with such energy is another vital offering of this holiday.

Miscellaneous Expenses and Budgeting

For expenses other than your holiday cost, you can carry approximately 240 EUR/250 USD/200 GBP/1700 CNY (or equivalent in your own currency). This can be used for other expenses including tips for porters and supporting staff. You can purchase Pakistani Rupees (PKR) upon arrival at the airport at good rates. US Dollars, Euros and Pound Sterling can quickly be converted into the local currency at the airport.

The porters are paid in Pakistani Rupees, not to mention everything else you may want to purchase in Pakistan. US Dollars will have an advantage of being easily exchanged at even smaller towns but we recommend one-time exchange. Credit cards can come handy for shopping in Islamabad for souvenirs/gift items including rugs. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) will be available in Islamabad and Skardu but using your debit/credit cards, you will only be able to withdraw Pakistani Rupees from ATMs.

Managing Tips

It is common that our participants at least tip the porters for their hard work carrying participant luggage and supplies. If you feel satisfied with the services of the guide, assistant(s), kitchen crew, you can contribute to the total tip. 95-120 Euros (or equivalent in your currency) would cover this element of the total expenses. The tour leader/guide helps all participants in deciding a tip for all crew members of the Trek. These tips are then handed over as a group in a “thank you” ceremony organized at the conclusion of the trek.

Baggage Allowance

Porters discussed above will be carrying your baggage/luggage apart from supplies, equipments etc. The maximum weight limit for your packed trekking bag is 12.5 kilograms (20 pounds). The load of your sleeping mattress and sleeping bag is included in the maximum limit. Please only bring required items on the trek. It will be possible for you to leave parts of your luggage at the hotel at your particular destination you chose. The maximum limit (12.5 kgs) strictly followed is assigned by the local porters organization. Your baggage allowance will not include equipments for mountaineering that you will bring along for the Trek. We will collect from you the mountaineering equipments at your destination that shall be carried separately by our porters.

All our potential guests are advised to read carefully and know the different elevations mentioned above for each trekking day. This is a strenuous trek at very high altitudes. Although this should not worry you as humans are reasonably gifted to become accustomed to high elevations, we must acclimatize according to our well-planned itinerary.

Trek Difficulty Level

trek to rush lake

Day 1 – Trek to Bericho Kor

The first day of the trek is over two glaciers –  Hoper (Bualtar Glacier)  and  Barpu Glacier . Ascent, descent, and discovery of the route take a lot of energy and time. It will take an experienced trekker 5 hours to reach the first camp in  Bericho Kor (3,300 m) . The campsite is located by the  Barpo  and  Miar glaciers .

After crossing the first ( Hoper) glacier , the upper level is called the Shishkin Camping site (not a preferred stop), fresh water is available and due to its height, you will be able to get  SCO M signals. Many peaks are visible from this point which include  Lady Finger  &  Ultar Peak ,  Kapel Peak ,  Malubiting Peak , and Spantik . You move forward to cross the  Barpo Glacier , which is very technical and difficult to cross. The rest of the trek is across meadows and very straight until you reach  Bericho Kor . Fresh water is available at this swimming pool.

Day 2 – Trek to Chidin Harai

The second day of the trek takes almost 6 hours. This entire trek is very steep and challenging. The campsite is at  Chidin Harai (4,440 m) , located in a beautiful meadow with a stunning view of the magnificent  Karakoram Mountains . On a clear day,  Distaghil Sar ,  Kunyang Chhish  7,823 meters (25,666 ft),  Trivor Peak 7,728 meters , and Bualtar Peak  are visible from  Childin Harai .

Many people stop and camp here, especially if the steep climb lasts all day. Experienced hikers may be able to continue forward to reach Rush Lake and camp there.

Day 3 – Trek to Rush Lake

The third day is the final climb from  Chidin Harai  to Rush Lake. The hike is a gradual elevation gain and a 3-hour trek. Once you reach the top, you can see Rush Lake surrounded by epic mountain ranges and some of the highest peaks in the world. Camp and enjoy the amazing lake and beautiful mountains that surround you.

Lake Rush Hike Tips for Hikers

  • Water is not available on the trek so arrange your water.
  • The slopes are challenging to climb, but also brutal and difficult to descend.
  • Make sure you carry your medication, the altitude increases quickly and you may experience altitude sickness and headaches.
  • Pack warm clothes, jackets, and winter sleeping bags, as the temperature will drop several degrees at night.
  • Check the weather forecast to make sure you don’t end up trekking in snowy and freezing weather.
  • Snowy weather at high altitudes causes the temperature to drop to minus Celsius.
  • Do not attempt to cross the glacier without a guide. These glaciers move frequently during the day and beginner trekkers cannot cross them without help.
  • Start your day early to trek before the sun rises.
  • There are no shadows on the trail and the scorching sun will make your trek difficult.

Rush Lake Trek at 4694 m with the ascent of Rush Peak (5200 m). Rush Lake is one of the highest alpine lakes in Pakistan. It is located about 15 km north of Miar Peak and Spantik (Golden Peak). Rush Lake and Rush Peak can be reached via Nagar and Hopar and via the Hopar Glacier (Bualtar Glacier) and Miar Glacier, (which rises from theMiar and Phuparash) peaks. The trek to Rush Lake can be reached without the need for a long and difficult climb. Yet Rush Peak itself is a highpoint on a broad ridge that can be reached with relative ease. This ridge is almost 20km long and separates the glaciated valley of the Barpu from the steep sided Hispar Valley. It starts close to the town of Nagar and raises gently South Eastwards to culminate in a series of very steep unclimbed 6000m peaks.

Starting from Hopar, a marvellous village known for fruit orchards and the production of potato seeds, we stroll through the terraced fields and experience some walking on glaciers as well. At the junction of Barpu and Bualter glaciers, our destination is rewarded with a superb view of Rush Peak. It is interesting that local legends talk about the gender of these glaciers as being male and female and also about their meeting and giving birth to new glaciers.

  • Considerations:  Witness beautiful fall foliage, but be prepared for potentially changing conditions at higher elevations.

Winter (December to February):

  • Weather:   Cold temperatures with heavy snowfall and harsh conditions.
  • Conditions:  Trails covered in snow, making trekking extraordinarily challenging and dangerous.

Rush Lake Pakistan Trek or Trekking:

The trek to this lake starts from Hoper village in Nagar.

Day 1: You have to cross two glaciers (Hoper and Bhurpu) on your way up and camp at Barichokor. It takes 8-10 hours.

Day 2: From there, there is a very very steep climb of 5-6 hours and then you walk another hour or so to a campsite Chedan Haraye. Either you stay there or go directly to the lake which is another 1.5-2 hours away.

Day 3: From the lake you go down even steeper and longer track and camp at Phai Pheri. Will take 5-6 hours.

Day 4: Then you cross two more glaciers (Bhurpu and Miar) to reach Hamdar. Around 7 hours. You can camp here or go back to Hoper crossing another glacier(Hoper) . Which will take another 3 hours.

You can return from the same way you came from also ;however, taking the loop leads you to beautiful meadows and Miar Glacier which is not to be missed.

And you can do this last day trek in 7 Hours Max. Keeping Rush lake in mind with an elevation of 4700 M and Rush Peak at 5100 M. Most of the trekkers plan and have been there in 2 days from Hopper Village. Hopper is at around 2500 M. From Hopper to Rush Lake one has to climb approx. 2000 M in two days and maximum of of that is on Day 2. So for I haven’t seen any blog mentioning of any acclimatization stages to reach to the height of 4700 M. Is it advisable, and isn’t it risky to gain 2000M in 2 days at these elevations, stay for the night and attempt 5100M peak next day. Check the temperature and season before visit this place.

Rush Lake Trek

  • Adventures Tours

For anyone who wants to have a first time taste of Himalayan trekking, we recommend the Rush Lake trek in the heart of the Hunza valley. During this trek you will cross glaciers, high meadows and lovely irrigated terraced fields and also have the spectacular view of the mighty Karakoram Mountains from Rush Lake. The trip begins in Islamabad from where we will proceed towards Hunza. The first sight of the towering Rakaposhi (7788 m.) takes one’s breath away. The views get better and better as we approach Karimabad; the capital of this unbelievable beautiful valley. If there is Shangri-La on earth, then this must be it! Our short trek starts across the valley and the Hunza River at a place called Hoper. This is where the snout of the famous Barpu glacier meets another glacier called: Bualter. Hunzakuts (people from Hunza) believe that glaciers are either male or female. Each glacier exudes its own gender qualities and when male and female glaciers meet they give birth to a baby glacier! After four or five days of trekking we will reach the beautiful Rush Lake. We will have ample opportunity to rest in this awe-inspiring place and to take in the fantastic mountain panoramas. Our return to Karimabad is via another route down the Barpu Glacier. At Karimabad you will have time to do some shopping and sightseeing in a bazaar of an ancient mountain kingdom. From here you will drive back to Gilgit and onwards to Islamabad. Except for one day, it is a green and moderate trek, recommended for first time trekkers, following the northeast stream flank of the Barpu glacier along a flat, fertile ablation valley, where large herds of goats and cattle graze among tamarisk and willow woods in summertime. In Karimabad we will board 4×4 soft-top jeeps and turn towards east for Nagar. Nagar was first settled in fourteenth century by people from Baltistan, who came over the Hispar Pass (5150 meters). After Nagar we will have seven days walk to reach Rush Lake and back to Karimabad. We also spend one day in upper Hunza in this trip. We end our trip back in Islamabad.

The most polluted lake in the world located near Dzerzhinsk

4 Comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Ecology , Photos , Regions

In the past it was a swamped karst chasm, and today it is one of the most polluted bodies of water on the planet known as the “Black Hole.”

The lake is located between Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk , on the outskirts of Dzerzhinsk eastern industrial zone (coordinates 56.2635788 43.6624149, Google Maps location ). The lake is surrounded by barbed wire with banning-warning labels. Photos by Lana Sator

According to unofficial data the lake contains about three hundred thousand cubic meters of various hazardous substances. Staying near the lake is dangerous to health. In the heat the concentration of phenol near the dump exceeds the norm by a thousand times.

Currently, different plans to rehabilitate the place are being developed.

Jesus Christ this is scary. I come from a very poor country in South America where pollution is a problem but nothing of this magnitude has been ever been seen there. It’s scary to see this and realize this is what we’ve done to our Earth. Sad, sad, sad…. May God protect us always…

‘I don’t smoke on the uphills’: Lazarus Lake walks across America (again)

Gary Cantrell, aka Lazarus Lake or Laz, completed his first trans-continental trek in 2018. He’s now attempting his second, but this time against medical advice

L azarus Lake is shifting in a straight-back chair, searching for the right spot to ease his pinched nerve. After days of steep climbs and steeper descents, the Capon Valley of West Virginia is a welcome oasis. The world is again mercifully flat, if only for a moment. Somewhere out there, the Alleghany mountains lie in wait. But Laz, the mastermind of such grueling endurance tests as the Barkley Marathons and Backyard Ultras, doesn’t want to think about that now; the pizzeria is filling up with smoke.

A 20-year-old scurries from the back to apologize while the man sitting next to us is still staring. He’s been speechless since Laz told him he’d just walked 17 miles over Timber Ridge to get here. Under a farmer’s cap pulled down to his squinty eyes, the man grins, rubs his jaw, and finally says: “Come again?”

“Yeah, I started in Delaware.”

“I’ll be.” The man says, adjusting his cap. “And you’re going where?”

“San Francisco.” Laz let’s the pause linger till the man’s eyes grow wide before adding, “Doesn’t everyone walk across the country when they turn 70?”

Gary Cantrell, aka Lazarus Lake or Laz, completed his first trans-continental trek in 2018. Self-dubbed Lazcon, it took him 126 days to walk from Newport, Rhode Island to Newport, Oregon. This year, the day before April Fools’ Day, he started on a second trans-con challenge from Fenwick Island, Delaware, to San Francisco. But there’s a different tenor now; this walk is against medical advice.

Last fall, a routine checkup ended with a diagnosis of a 90% blockage in a carotid artery. Despite being warned he could have a stroke at any moment, he increased his training miles. Brought in for a heart test before the surgery, he told the doctors, “If I fail it, I’ll just have to start my walk early.” In essence, nothing short of dying was going to stop Lazcon 2024.

It’s now seven o’clock at the pizzeria and Laz is finally finishing his 24-inch meat-lover’s. I can’t help but shake my head as he steps outside for another cigarette. There to crew him for 10 days and having worked on a book on him for two years, I know he’s a smorgasbord of health issues: a fused vertebrae in his neck, Graves’ Disease, a festering toenail, a blocked femoral artery in his left leg. But I’ve also come to understand he’s never met an obstacle greater than the call of the open road.

Back at the four-room Firefly Inn, he spends two hours methodically chronicling day 15 for his online followers. His posts include historical markers, geological formations, and peculiarities along the walk. One day a new pair of denim appears in the grass – his size – and he keeps them. Another day, he discovers he’s worn his shorts backwards since morning.

His followers also track his mileage and know it’s been dropping. Laz hoped to do 23 miles a day and finish in August for his birthday. But the numbers now point more to October. And 19 October is his Big’s Backyard Satellite Championship – a hard cutoff for his walk. Earlier in the week he wrote, “Unsupportable. I will have to go faster, or I will end up having to stop.”

Two days after writing that, it seemed he might.

Just outside Berryville, Virginia, at sun-up, the day began with a deadly dance on a shoulder-less backroad. Laz darts on and off the grass to avoid cars and after 10 hours of fighting an unrelenting headwind, he’s a meager 15 miles up the road. It’s five o’clock – stopping time – and I wonder if he’ll keep pushing. Instead, he’s leaned over his cattle-prod walking stick – done – his face a chapped leather mask of frustration.

That night, he moans in pain and twitches under the sheets till the alarm rings at five. Ashen and swollen, he sits staring blankly at his box of foot-fixing tools. He’d maybe better take the day off, he mumbles. For the first time since I’ve known him, he falls quiet. We just look at each other. Then, the nerve in his back pinches and he jolts upright in his chair. Somehow in this moment, he’s reborn. His face fills with blood, his eyes brighten, and an hour later we’re on the highway headed to West Virginia. He bounds along as fast as I’ve seen him. “Somewhere out there lies the ‘Alleged Heny,’” he says, pointing up with his stick. Since we hadn’t spotted the mighty Alleghany Mountains, he jokes daily that they might not exist.

Lazarus Lake walks on.

The next morning, he’s even better, downright giddy. At 5am, he’s shuffling and grunting in the dark. “Farred up this morning,” he writes in a quick post. “Farred up. I am in by god west virginnie.” A quick piss, then he cracks open a Dr Pepper. Several gulps and a smoke, and he’s checking his left pinky toe. A nail as thick as a throat lozenge is purpling underneath. (He cut a hole in his shoe so it can stick out.) On the ball of his foot, he attaches a small grey neuroma pad the size of a dime. It alleviates some pain, but “damn it hurts” as he pulls on his socks and shoes. In the car, he chugs a Bang energy drink, 16 ounces of purely legal, calcium-infused, liquid speed.

But the road always holds surprises. A quick left turn sees the land tilt nine degrees skyward. It’s the foot of a multi-tiered climb known as Timber Ridge, and Laz has to stop 10 times. “Good God,” he says, pointing at a scree of fallen rock a thousand feet below. “When we started, I thought that was the top.” He leans over his knees and stretches his back. He wants a cigarette but resists and says, “I don’t smoke on the uphills.”

The rest of the day plays out as usual: a sip of Gatorade at 10, a chocolate milkshake for lunch around two, roughly five cigarette breaks and a grand finale at five with the coldest Dr Pepper in the cooler. In the Capon Valley at last, our senses are alive with the smell of pizza and pastures. Laz looks up at the horizon. “Is this the Alleged Heny?”

In his eyes they’re more than a mountain range; they’re a new physiographic province. He’d started on the Coastal Plain, made his way to the Piedmont Plateau, climbed the Blue Ridge, and entered the Ridge and Valley region of Appalachia. Next up: The Alleghanies. If they exist.

A walk across the country is in many ways a journey of past and present, of life and death. The rock cuts on the roadside reveal dark red bands of Devonian shale – remnants of a time when a shallow sea covered West Virginia. The guardrail terminals range from early models that could impale a car to newer versions made to absorb shock. Roadkill is scattered about in various forms of decomposition, and wildflowers crack through pavement to breathe. And highways don’t hum, they thunder – a rush of hot air as semi-trucks blow by – sometimes knocking you back, sometimes sucking you in.

The United States saw 7,443 pedestrians killed by drivers in 2021. The following year, there were even more. Laz is well aware of the danger. He walks with a bright yellow vest and waves proudly at road crews wearing the same – a “brotherhood of the vest,” he says. The only thing that scares him, he admits, “is not finishing”.

This singularity of focus leads to his grumpiest moments when movement and lost time lead away from the goal. Yet, the heart of his walk is an 18-mile detour south into Oklahoma – to Oologah Lake – to the memory of Alluwe, a once-booming oil town sunk beneath its waters. As a young boy, he watched the Army Corps of Engineers flood it and the old homes of his parents and grandparents. Some of his earliest memories are hunting arrowheads there with his father Frank. Now, Frank lies buried a few miles away next to Laz’s mother Earlene who passed away in 2022. Though he’s spent the majority of his life in Tennessee, Laz will forever be an Oklahoman. The state is burned into the leather of his belt.

My last day crewing him, I can’t help but stand and watch a little longer as Laz plods up an onramp. He says he’s ready to take on West Virginia’s Corridor H, a raised four-lane that climbs continuously to the top of South Branch Mountain. Timber Ridge, it seems, had merely been a warmup.

The last pitch is so immense, it stretches like a highway to heaven till it curves gently around a stand of trees. I drive a few miles up an old road roughly parallel to the corridor and park. From there, I can wait safely for a text if he needs anything before the next turn off. Across a meadow the size of six Central Parks, the corridor guardrail forms its own grey horizon.

For an hour I sit. No sight of Laz. My stomach begins to wrestle. I realize this mountain is going to be too much. Too much after the days and days of endless walking. Too much for his condition. I begin searching the map. Maybe there’s a way to go around. Then, there’s a seemingly unmoving speck of yellow, like the lint of a tennis ball cast against nature’s enormous canvas of browns and greens. I squint. It’s Laz, inching beneath a blue ocean sky.

When he reaches the summit, it’s nearly five. He stops twice in the next 30-yard downhill, then limps forward till he’s braced against the hood with both hands – his head down – the tip of a cigarette bright red in the wind. I grab the coldest Dr Pepper out of the slush of the cooler and study his face as he sits and guzzles it. His eyes come alive like a child’s as he points off to the west. “Look,” he says. “They are alleged no more.” In the distance a faint line of mountains cut across the sky. The Alleghanies.
