7. How To Win Matches

How good you are in the game influences how fast you level up since you need to keep winning in order to get more cards, coins, and Gold. While the game relies heavily on skill, there are still a few things you can do to improve your chances of winning matches. First off, understand how the game works. Before you take a shot, you will need to choose a club. The game sets a default one for you, but you can choose a different one if you like. The game’s recommendation is usually a solid choice, so switch only if you know what you’re doing.

Know your clubs

For most shots, the game will assign you the club in your bag that is best for the situation, and generally, you shouldn’t stray too far from the variety of clubs you start with.

A Wedge, a Driver and a Putter are all important tools for professional golfers, while Irons and Hybrids can be used for more specific situations.

You can of course assign your own clubs in your bag, which is recommended as you unlock a better variety, but take note of their benefits. Your starting clubs are good all-rounders, and other clubs tend to be more situational.

Check the stats of the clubs, including how far they can drive the ball, and how powerful their spin capabilities are. If you’re a more casual, straight shooter, then you might want to avoid those clubs which are better at giving your ball a spin.

Though, you should also feel confident about branching out a bit and using a bigger variety of clubs.

1 Hitting the mark

When you take a shot you just need to pull back on the golf ball, pulling it further back for more power, and holding it to the left or right to angle your shot.

3 Risk and reward

Every shot is a matter of risk and reward. The further you pull back on the shot, the more wildly it can go out of control. Very risky, and tempting, especially when that fully charged shot can take you near the green.

However, your pro isn’t just limited to those events, as you’ll have to go through Q-School and the Korn Ferry circuit as well in order to eventually earn your PGA Tour card. Every step of the way, you’ll be able to earn XP through Tournaments, Challenges, and Quest Objectives.

Above all else, playing and performing well in Tournaments gives you the best chance to maximize your XP. That said, XP isn’t the only thing players will earn as they complete rounds. With XP comes Skill Points that can be put into various aspects of your game.

There are four main categories and multiple sub-categories to navigate, so choose wisely in terms of what you want to focus on. Will you opt for more of a finesse style? Then by all means, work on that Control and Accuracy. Or, do you want to be more of a grip-it-and-rip-it type of pro? Then maybe you’ll want to max out your Power early on. How often you play comes down to the player as well, as you can choose to play full rounds or focus on Quick Play, which offers a selection of holes to focus on rather than playing the entire round.

There are only a few ways you can improve your player in PGA Tour 2K23 because most of the gameplay relies on your mechanical skills and knowledge of the game.

You can have all the best skills, perks, clubs, shafts, and balls, but you still have to make the right decisions and hit all the perfect timings on the fairway.

For this post, we’ll show you how to improve your player fast in PGA Tour 2K23, whether it is through skills, clubs, technique, and everything in between.

Ways to Improve Your Player

Choosing the right archetype for your playstyle is one way of improving your player.

Greensman – strong putting skills, but weak with recovery shots

Powerhouse – strong driving distance, but weak with timing/accuracy

Rhythm – strong with timing or accuracy, but weak with driving distance

Sculptor – strong with shot shaping, but weak with distance control

Woodsman – strong on recovery shots, but weak with putting skills

Every archetype gives a different playstyle for your player. The only noticeably weak archetype here would be the Woodsman.

You don’t need to be strong on recovery shots if you always find the green or the fairway. Since it also puts a damper on your putting skills, the archetype is horrible.

In the main menu screen, you can go to “MyPlayer” and press the “Locker” icon. From here, you can see four different tabs – Golf Bag, Collection, Fittings, and Apparel.

Under Golf Bag, Collection, or Fittings, you can equip a head, shaft, and grip on your clubs. Each club can be fit with one head, shaft, and grip. All of these fittings have different rarities and stats.

The higher the rarity, the better the boost. However, you would want to choose stats that can be beneficial to you.

For example, if you are using a Powerhouse archetype, you would have some slight problems with swing difficulties. You can compensate for that specific weakness by adding swing path and timing bonuses.

In a way, it would pretty much be the same if you are using a Rhythm archetype and you are adding fittings that increase your power.

However, it is important that you can increase your drive distance, as finishing 5-par holes will always give you a chance for an eagle. If you can carry upwards of 310 yards on your driver, you can make the green with two strokes and go for the eagle.

You can have custom clubs with fittings that are built specifically for accuracy and timing, while other clubs are built to carry more power.

For example, you can add more timing and swing path to your 6-iron while adding more power to your 5-iron. You can have better recoveries on the rough with the 5-iron, and you can use the 6-iron for more accuracy.

You can even opt for using a bigger club if that club has more timing and swing path fittings. You can just reduce the power on the swing.

It is also worth noting that equipping fittings on your clubs will have a fit fee. The higher the rarity, the higher the cost.

You can replace the fitting any time you want, but it will cost you coins every time you switch. The fittings do not disappear if you change them.

Skills add a lot of bonuses to your player. These skills are categorized by clubs. Each club has its own skill tree, and they will all have separate bonuses.

It is best to focus your skill points on clubs that are used the most. These are the putter, irons, driver, and wedge.

Most of the good skills take a while to unlock because you need to allocate skill points before unlocking the next tiers. On the bright side, you can unlock the best skills for a club even if you allocate some of your early skill points to the other clubs.

How to Unlock Fittings

To unlock fittings, you can get them through leveling reward bonuses, rivalry challenges, winning events, and sponsorships.

All of them are tied to just playing the game, performing well, and winning. However, when you get sponsorships , you can choose the brand that can give you rare or epic fittings.

How to Gain More Skill Points

To earn skill points, you need to level your player. Each level gives you one skill point, and the maximum number of SP is 50.

There are 126 skill points needed to allocate all the skills in the game, so you need to choose your skill points wisely. You can reset all your skill points, but it will cost you 500 coins.

All of the things mentioned are ways you can improve your player, but most of the improvements need to come from decision-making and mechanical skills.

The best tip to improve your play is to notice everything involved that can alter your shot accuracy.

Things like wind, shot timing, terrain, lie, swing path, shot types, spins, loft, and everything in between need to be noticed. Learning how to spin the ball can save you a lot of points.

You can improve your custom character in EA Sports PGA Tour 2023 , and you definitely need to do so to complete some of the harder challenges in the game.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about unlocking new skills and shot types for your golfer!

How to Unlock Skills and Shot Types in EA Sports PGA Tour 2023

To get skills and shot types, you first need to level up your golfer. There are a total of 50 levels, with your character starting at level 1.

You get experience naturally by playing the game at all using your custom golfer, though quests and challenges give the highest amount of experience.

Every level up will give you a different amount of Skill Points which you can use in the Skills tab of the Golfer menu. Just choose the category and skill you wish to learn and confirm the Skill Point cost.

You can also unlearn skills by retraining your golfer. However, this has a heavy coin cost, so you should only do it after you’ve reached level 50!

There are 5 different categories for you to use your SP in which are as follows:

• Power – Increases your swing speed, making every shot type reach longer distances.
• Driving – Divided into Accuracy and Control. Makes you less likely to mishit and lowers the shot dispersion of Driving Shot Types.
• Approach – Divided into Accuracy, Control, and Recovery. Gives you better control over Approach Shot Types, making them more accurate and reliable.
• Short Game – Divided into Accuracy, Control, and Recovery. Improves your overall handling when using Short Game Shot Types.
• Putting – Last but not least, this will give you better accuracy and control over Putting Shot Types.

As you can see, nearly all these stats primarily relate to their respective shot types. But what are the various shot types and how do you get them? Let’s go over them next.

How to Unlock and Upgrade Shot Types

You will unlock Shot Types by leveling up your skills . Notice how some skill slots have a shield-shaped badge? These skill nodes will unlock Shot Types.

Hover your cursor over any of these skills and a small pop-up will appear telling you which Shot Types the skill will unlock. It will also tell you if there are any extra requirements, such as another skill.

Meet the requirements listed and the Shot Type will be unlocked!

You can upgrade every shot type as well. Each type has three ranks: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Upgrading works the same as unlocking them. You just need to upgrade your skills further; the Shot Type pop-ups will tell you what stats you need for each upgrade.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to equip the shot types or anything like that . Just having them will let you use them.

You can choose different routes in career mode, choosing whether to start from the very bottom as an amateur or start walking before crawling and heading straight to the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour. The choice is yours, and if you are not ready for any, you’ll know from the first tee-off.

• Augusta’s Amen Corner (1-16 Players)
• Random, 9 Holes, Tour (1-16 Players)

When playing competitively, players can choose to play against up to 16 other players across the globe, and you can choose from a selection of the famous Augusta’s Golf Course or any 9-hole, front or back, of random course selections.

EA Sports PGA Tour – Road to the Masters’ Challenges Game Mode

If you’re not a pro at swinging, putting, or reading the game situation, challenges game mode is where you’ll spend most of your hours practicing and getting used to Road to the Masters. The challenges are one of the game’s best features and will help set you up for a great experience. 

There are different challenges of various lengths and difficulties that, once completed, will gain your XP points and rewards. They consist of historical moments in the PGA and LPGA over storied courses, tournaments, and real-life moments over the weekend’s action being played in real time.

These are the challenges:

• Championship Moments (582 moments on initial download)

In Road to the Masters, winning Tickets will help you qualify for more prestigious tournaments and a chance to win some “cool rewards” — the more prestigious the event — the more tickets you’ll need to win to enter and the bigger the pot you’ll win. 

Important to note: you must pay an entry fee for each tournament. While some have unlimited entry opportunities, others have more limited entries, so choose wisely and bring your A-game. Tournaments are also only available for a limited time, and once completed, you’ll be rewarded for your current position on the leaderboard.

Nurturing future leaders and champions

Bridge Kids, an initiative of the title sponsor, CJ Group , provides aspiring golfers an opportunity to experience the game at the highest level. Launched in 2017, the initiative pairs local junior golfers with PGA TOUR pros, offering them firsthand experiences of golf skills and life lessons through Q&A sessions and mini-games. PGA TOUR players Ryan Palmer and Byeong Hun An hosted this year’s event.

“What an honor to be a part of Bridge Kids here at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson," said Palmer. "It is great to see the younger generation getting into the game of golf. That’s the beauty of what we do. Growing the game and seeing these kids out here loving it as much as I do."

At the same time, fifth graders from Momentous School joined professional golfers as their official caddies on No. 7 during Wednesday’s Healthcare Highways Pro-am. Two students from Momentous School were also brought on as junior reporters to bring unique stories with a focus on mental health from the green. This experience drives home the importance of social interaction, physical activity and connection with nature in maintaining mental health.

Building resilience through staff training

Setting a precedent on the PGA TOUR, THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson has educated its entire staff on mental health. Through the "Building Your Mental Health Toolkit" program, created and led by Momentous Institute experts, more than 40 employees have been equipped with knowledge on managing stress, staying mentally strong, and supporting others. Mental health training is particularly important for managing the higher levels of stress associated with running a major sporting event.

Supporting mental health services with 'Birdies on 17'

In a generous pledge to support Momentous Institute, the CJ Group has committed to donating $1,000 for every birdie made during the tournament on THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson’s signature par-3 17th hole, Ranch17. The contribution from “Birdies on 17” will directly support Momentous Institute’s work in providing innovative mental health services for children and families.

A symbol of mental health support with 'Green Out' on Saturday

The "Green Out" on Saturday, May 5, will see players, fans and staff sporting green attire or accessories in a collective display of support for mental health awareness. Additionally, players’ caddies will wear custom bibs to highlight their players' tool for staying mentally strong, driving forward meaningful dialogue, and understanding around mental health.

“Having professional athletes at this level recognize and talk about the importance of mental health is critical for helping to end the stigma around the issue,” said Jon Drago, tournament director of THE CJ CUP.

Inspiring mindfulness

This year’s tournament will debut a mental health mindfulness area along the 18th fairway. Fans can relax, take their shoes off and ground themselves in nature. Furthermore, the presence of the “MENTAL HEALTH FORE ALL” photo installation on the No. 18 fairway reminds fans to prioritize their mental health for themselves and others.

This year, THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson will be supported by more than 1,300 community volunteers, dedicating their time and skills across a wide range of roles. The Salesmanship Club of Dallas , which launched the tournament in 1968, will make up around 400 of these volunteers.

Patrick Cantlay was the leading voice behind the decision to block Rory McIlroy’s immediate return to the PGA Tour policy board, Sky Sports News understands .

McIlroy told Sky Sports last month that he was 'happy to do his bit' to try and help ongoing negotiations to unify the men's game, with the former world No 1 offering to return to the role he held until his resignation last November.

The Northern Irishman's return to replace Webb Simpson - who personally sought out McIlroy to be his replacement - was subject to a vote from board members, with McIlroy suggesting ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship that a "subset" of people were unhappy about his possible return.

"I think it [conversations] got pretty complicated and pretty messy," McIlroy told reporters at Quail Hollow. "I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before."

Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods are the PGA Tour player directors on the policy board, with McIlroy admitting that the vote and a possible return was a "complicated process".

It is understood that Cantlay felt "uncomfortable" that McIlroy would automatically take Simpson's seat rather than going through a formal process, with the former FedExCup champion's view backed up by Spieth and Woods.

The main reason for an impasse in negotiations between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is the latter's vision to globalise men's professional golf, whereas it is believed many of those on the board are reluctant to play regularly outside the United States.

McIlroy sees globalisation and a move towards a 'World Tour' as an absolute necessity in order to force through a deal between the two parties, with the fear that men's professional golf will otherwise continue to fracture and audiences will dwindle.

"I would say I'm impatient because I think we've got this window of opportunity to get it done," McIlroy added on Wednesday. "Both sides from a business perspective I wouldn't say need to get it done, but it makes sense.

"It's probably not going to feel great for either side, but if it's a place where the game of golf starts to thrive again and we can all get back together, then I think that's ultimately a really good thing."

McIlroy's potential return to the policy board was welcomed by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, chairman of the PIF, by leading PGA Tour sponsors and by the DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings.

"It's a really good thing for us to have a European voice, someone as articulate and knowledgeable as Rory back on the board," Kinnings said last month, when his reappointment had been expected.

"I know how much it took out of him originally. This is a guy who'd work until 3am on board meetings and then get up for a pro-am. I think his voice will be really important to make sure we get all the right people to the negotiating table."

Simpson explained on Wednesday that the board wanted McIlroy to be "not necessarily in every conversation but in more conversations", while PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan insisted that he still has a key voice in the sport.

In a statement to Golf Channel, Monahan said: "Today's news is in no way a commentary on Rory's important perspective and influence. It's simply a matter of adherence to our governance process by which a PGA Tour player become a board member.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship best bets, predictions: PGA Tour odds, picks

While we are all awaiting the year’s second golf major, next week’s PGA Championship, we have a Signature Event this week.

There are 69 golfers set to tee it up at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club, a true championship-level golf course in Charlotte, N.C.. In fact, it has previously hosted the 2017 PGA Championship and the 2022 Presidents Cup, and will play host to the 2025 PGA Championship.

A par-71 course that measures 7,558 yards, Quail Hollow is one of the longest and most difficult courses on the regular PGA Tour schedule. It has classical features with tree-lined fairways and thick rough, and there are water hazards in play on seven of the 18 holes.

With the long length and the fact that there aren’t many forced layups, this is a driver-heavy course. The averaging driving distance at Quail Hollow in 2023 was 304 yards — one of the highest marks of the entire season. This is one of a handful of events on the tour where driving distance is a big advantage. 

The greens are average in size (6,600 square feet) and feature bermudagrass with poa trivialis overseed. They are difficult to hit on average, which makes iron play and scrambling important.

Essentially, we are looking for golfers this week to bet on who don’t have a major weakness and who are long off the tee.

It also doesn’t hurt to have good course history here, as this is one of the most predictive events on the PGA Tour. In other words, golfers who have played well at Quail Hollow tend to continue to play well there.

Let’s get into this week’s picks. 

We don’t see golfers win the same PGA Tour event in back-to-back years very often, but it’s certainly not unprecedented.

Clark, who won at Quail Hollow in 2023 as a massive underdog , has been dominant in Signature Events this season. He won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, was runner-up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship, and finished third at the RBC Heritage.

He’s one of the longest hitters in the field and doesn’t have a weakness in his game. He has as much win equity as Rory McIlroy or Xander Schauffele, and we are getting much better odds on Clark. 

Young is going to pick up his first win on the PGA Tour sooner rather than later, and I’ve maintained that it will come on a championship-level golf course.

He has contended in several majors in his career and now has a total of seven runner-up finishes. It’s not like he doesn’t know how to win, as he had two victories on the Korn Ferry Tour before earning his PGA Tour card.

He’s one of the best drivers in the world and is elite with his mid and long irons. If he can have a decent week with his putter, I like his chances to contend. 

This is the safest bet of the week with positive odds because Schaufefle has finished in the top 10 in six of his last nine starts.

He has finished T2 and T14 in his last two stroke-play events at Quail Hollow, a course where he was dominant at the Presidents Cup in 2022.

He’s one of the few golfers on tour that is elite in all aspects of his game. He’s an excellent driver, he’s elite on approach, he’s terrific around the greens, and he’s a good putter.

I see no reason why he can’t post another top-10 finish this week.

Scott’s T30 finish last week doesn’t jump off the page, but he gained 6.3 strokes ball striking.

This season he has consistent results but inconsistent strokes-gained numbers. He’ll have a good week ball-striking, then he’ll have a good week with the short game, and then he’ll have a good week with some other combination of those categories.

The way I see it, he has the potential to gain in all four aspects and put it all together.

He finished T5 at Quail Hollow last year and tends to play his best on classical golf courses like this one.

Donna Kelce explained that she and her ex-husband Ed Kelce had a plan in place when they would ultimately divorce after 25 years of marriage.

The proud mom, whose sons are NFL champs Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce, opened up about how they stayed together for the sake of their family in the latest installment of “The Martha Stewart Podcast .”

“It was after the kids were out of college” Donna said of when she and Ed divorced. “We worked together as a team and it’s very, very difficult to raise children on your own.

“And with as active as they were, how do you do that on your own? So we decided that we would be married throughout the entire time that the kids were in the house, and that’s the way it worked out.”

Stewart, 82, praised Donna for the decision she and Ed made, calling it “smart” and saying they were “lucky” to be in that position — to which Donna agreed.

It’s unclear exactly when the couple parted ways.

Travis and Jason discussed their childhood and their parents’ relationship in the sports documentary, “Kelce,” which released on Prime Video in 2023.

“I knew my mom and dad’s situation was different than other parents,” Travis said in the documentary. “I would go and have sleepovers at other houses and the other parents are staying in the same room, and my parents didn’t stay in the same room.

“I started making those connections when I was in middle school and I realized that they were probably gonna split — but they stayed together for me and Jason’s benefit, I believe.”

Ed explained in the documentary that he and Donna made sacrifices to make sure their sons found their passion and followed it.

“If we had split as we probably both would have preferred, that would have been a nightmare with the logistics, getting kids where they had to be and providing all the support,” Ed said.

Donna recalled that time as being “tough” while juggling parenting.

“Just trying to keep it all together when you’re being a parent,” she said. “It’s tough.”

Donna previously explained during an episode of her sons’ “New Heights” podcast that she and Ed met by chance at a Cleveland bar when she was actually going to meet another guy for a drink.

The pair “talked forever,” Donna said, and she never went to meet the other man.

Donna and Ed are regulars at their sons’ games and events, and most recently attended the first-ever live show of the “New Heights” podcast, which took place in their native Cincinnati last month.
