A few days later, Truman meets Lauren who tells him, during their secret rendezvous that they are living in a big TV set and being controlled by a TV show director. However, she is soon taken away and accused of madness. Truman continues his quest for the truth until he ends up on a boat sailing out of the island. The director creates a simulation of a huge storm to deter him from reaching the borders, but Truman's determination is unparalleled.

In a way, this movie is a call to question reality instead of taking it at face value. It speaks to the human need for freedom of choice and for the truth. The two, freedom and truth, are featured as an interdependent pair, a whole package that one ought to actively seek in order to assert one’s humanity. She contacts Professor Samuel Norman whose main research interest is in brain capacity. She informs him that she is able to access a huge percentage of her brain capacity which is completely unprecedented and nearly impossible. The professor tries to help Lucy, but she ends up helping him to advance his research.

The movie is a metaphor for the limitlessness of the human mind. The fact that humans are so absorbed by the lifestyle of consumerism, money, and fame, makes them lazier than to activate the true potential of their minds. It’s a movie that will make you appreciate the magnificent and absolutely brilliant muscle that is the brain. This is one of the movies that will show you that the real treasure is, indeed, inside of you.

8 Mr. Nobody (2009)

In 2009, Mr. Nobody was released as another thought-provoking science fiction drama film. Directed by Jaco Van Dormael and starring Jared Leto , the movie tells the story of the 118-year-old Nemo Nobody, who happens to be the last mortal on earth. The movie is a nonlinear narrative that jumps from one life account to a wholly different one. The main character is always Nemo, but the events and the characters in his life change accordingly with his decisions.

The movie presents the many life paths that Nemo might have or indeed has lived. It’s a movie about how a small decision can have a huge impact on how life may turn out. Others call it the multiverse hypothesis. It is, basically, the concept that there are infinite parallel universes, also called "alternate universes", "quantum universes", and "interpenetrating dimensions". It is still a scientific inquiry as physicists cannot agree on the accuracy of such an idea. However, in fiction, it has been illustrated in many comic books and in certain movies as well. In this context, the idea of parallel universes puts a huge responsibility on human decision-making since it is illustrated as the only variable that changes reality.

7 The Age of Adaline (2015)

In The Age of Adaline , a young, beautiful, and intellectual woman (played by Blake Lively) is born at the turn of the 20th century. On a stormy night, she gets into a car accident that gives her the gift of immortality. The word "gift" is hugely questioned in this movie, as the protagonist herself is very conflicted about her agelessness.

Because of her miraculous ability to escape time, she witnesses her dog's death and her daughter's transition from childhood to adulthood to old age. The thought of outliving everyone she cares about scares her and drives her to isolation. She moves from one city to the next, afraid of being uncovered, and refuses to humor the idea of getting into a relationship. Her fear of loss keeps her trapped in a circle of loneliness and solitude.

Everything takes a turn for the better, however, when Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) walks into her life. They fall in love, and she even accepts to meet his family. His father, however, turns out to be her ex-lover, a pretty twisted joke that life would play from time to time. This, of course, throws her off balance for a while.

The spiritual element in this movie is the idea that not everything that seems like a gift is indeed so. Immortality is something humans mindlessly seek out, but it can easily turn into a curse, especially if it keeps you from finding love.

6 Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

In Eat, Pray, Love , Julia Roberts plays the role of the celebrated author Elizabeth Gilbert who travels the world in the aftermath of her divorce , in search of spiritual ascension, worldly pleasures, and learning. Originally, the film is a memoir of the writer’s journey to self-discovery and growth. It teaches the importance of introspection in illuminating parts of one’s own life and one’s own identity. In Bali, she is introduced to the art of balance between worldly matters and spiritual quests. In fact, an elderly medicine man, a guru of some kind, teaches her the wisdom and knowledge that he has acquired throughout the years, and they end up falling in love unexpectedly, and beautifully.

Their smooth union is evidence enough that walking out of a toxic relationship and focusing on one’s own advancement will not only provide balance but can actually reward you with the best partner. Eat, Pray, Love is a beautiful, quiet, and captivating movie that will feed both your spirit and your mind.

5 The Secret Garden (2020)

The Secret Garden , a British fantasy drama film based on the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, was released in 2020. It follows the story of the orphaned Mary Lennox, who moves into her uncle’s house. Despite being instructed by a stiff housemaid not to explore the place, Marry’s curiosity leads her into a secret garden. The next day, she takes her cousin Colin, who is in a wheelchair, along with her. They explore the garden together and Collin starts feeling the magic of the place. He tries to leave his chair and walk again. In the meantime, their house catches fire and the uncle is perceived to be frantically looking for his missing son. Mary finally walks into the burning house to tell her uncle that his son is safe in the secret garden.

The movie illustrates the uncle’s depression over his lost wife and his overbearing protectiveness of his son. One could interpret his son’s disability as a consequence of his father's maladaptive protectiveness. The secret garden is the place where every problem is magically solved. There, traumas are cured, and limitations are removed. The son is walking again, and the father has regained his senses and psychological balance. All it took is the ignited and curious spirit of a little girl who refuses to live in fear and sorrow . The movie helps the viewer get a sense of our own responsibility in healing our wounds and in getting over our hurtful past. Courage and moving on go hand in hand. It is definitely a movie worth watching.

4 I Origins (2014)

I Origins is a movie that probes the great mysteries of life, starting from the incredible mystery of the human eye. It is directed by Mike Cahill, this movie represents the endless dance between science and faith. The fact-oriented molecular biologist Dr. Ian Gray (Michael Pitt) is looking to create an eye from living organisms along with his lab partner Karen (Brit Marling). Despite Ian’s fascination with the eye and his passion for this rather ambitious project, he almost loses interest when he meets the beautiful Sofi (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) at a Halloween party. Their meeting manages to create, even temporarily, a seed of doubt in his rigid scientific and factual view of life.

Sofi is spiritual and believes in a parallel intangible reality. She warns him, “It is dangerous to play God.” Their relationship comes to an end with the shocking death of Sofi. Seven years later, he marries his lab assistant and together, they carry on their quest to prove that the gift of vision is, in fact, just a result of evolution and not a divine gift. Despite Sofi’s attempts to open his "inner" eye, the scientist is rigid in his views. His obsession with eyes and sight becomes ironic when his blindness to the spiritual is introduced to the equation.

Finally, he meets an Indian girl whose eyes are the exact replication of the deceased Sofi. He starts observing the little girl and noticing the many ways in which she resembles his ex-wife. This encounter liberates Ian from his stubbornness and helps him consider that something beyond science can exist. Faith, God, miracles, and messages from beyond, are now all possibilities to be looked into.

3 Inception (2010)

Inception grapples with the idea that our subconscious controls the bigger part of our reality. Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece is about a professional thief named Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) who infiltrates the subconscious of his targets with the use of a machine and a group of trained "brain hackers." If you are thinking that this is too good to be true, well, you would be right—jumping into one’s subconscious repetitively and staying there for a long time has dangerous consequences.

The protagonist’s wife, who journeys with him through the subconscious was eventually unable to tell reality from dream . When she is awake, she would be thinking that she is dreaming. In fact, she decides to jump from the balcony of a hotel room in order to wake up, not knowing that the fall will kill her. Her husband tries to warn her, but she is so convinced that she makes the jump. Cobb’s trauma over the loss of his wife, and his guilt does not leave him. Every time he dives into his subconscious , he meets her in the dream realm. She tries to get him to stay with her in that realm.

However, Cobb’s sense of reality is stronger, and he finally manages to leave the dreamworld and rejoin his children. This movie makes you think about the power that trauma holds on one’s subconscious and how it affects reality. The limitations are always internal, precisely inside the parts of the mind that are hard to reach.

2 Her (2013)

Her is a 2013 science-fiction movie that stood out thanks to its original ideas and creative, thought-provoking approach. It follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) , a talented writer who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an AI virtual assistant. The idea of a relationship between a human and a robot has been dealt with before, but never as profoundly as in this movie. There has always been the fantasy that a robot can have the human complexity that allows it to develop feelings and have a relationship. If the computer can talk back, can answer questions, and even have a full conversation, maybe it can also fulfill our emotional needs. That’s the premise of the whole movie.

Theodore is an example of a lonely and introverted writer who finds it difficult to relate to his surroundings. He is also on the verge of a divorce that he keeps delaying. The writer and his AI assistant start having deep conversations about his marriage, love, and the meaning of life. Feelings start to grow and finally, Theodore accepts Samantha as a romantic partner despite the unorthodox nature of the relationship. A risk that was worth taking, for a while—until he learns that she has been talking to thousands like himself simultaneously. She finally leaves him and refuses to disclose her next destination.

Although the movie succeeds in making viewers sympathize with this unconventional relationship , the true message behind it is that escaping one’s painful emotions and difficulties in building relationships by relying on the virtual world will only delay personal development and make things worse. The movie is also a call to face facts and opt for the truth, no matter how painful it is.

1 Arrival (2016)

Arrival is a movie about the curious issue of extraterrestrial life. It follows a linguistics professor, Louise Banks (Amy Adams), who was summoned by the military in order to lead an investigation of 12 spaceships that hit different parts of the world. Whether aliens exist is still a matter of debate, however, this movie creates a possibility of interaction between species. The interaction was depicted as a mission fraught with mystery and danger. Professor Louise was brave enough to remove her suit and approach the Heptapods as an act of showing trust in order to facilitate communication. Her efforts were fruitful as she gets to decode some messages from their heavily coded interaction.

The movie presents certain aspects like time, from an extraterrestrial point of view . Time is not linear for Heptapods, and they show Louise a glimpse of her future. Despite the unpleasant things that she sees in her future, she decides to make the same decisions. It’s another way of saying that bad things are inevitable and that if you want to dodge them, you will have to dodge the good things as well. There is also a political side to this movie as it's mainly about communication, peace, and inclusion. Through her communication with the aliens, Louise teaches a lesson to the tension-ridden global politics; a lesson suggesting that if it is possible for two different species to find common ground and communicate in peace, how much easier it would be for countries of the same planet to do the same.

The secret in spiritually-awakening movies is that they take viewers on a journey to an uncharted territory of mysteries and wonders. They ask the right questions and expand one's understanding of reality.

Shared Death Experiences; Supernatural Events Around the Dying

New research is shedding light on Shared Death Experiences; when the living accompany the dying on their journey into what may lie beyond.

While there has been a good deal of attention paid to the Near-Death Experience , very little is known by the general public about the Shared Death Experience (SDE).

A new research survey is the first of its kind to explore at length this fascinating phenomenon.

William Peters is the founder of the Shared Crossing Project , which is dedicated to educating people about the transformative experiences of the dying. He is also the author of the recently published book “ At Heaven’s Door. ”

“A Shared Death Experience occurs when somebody dies and a loved one, caregiver, bystander expresses that they feel like they shared in the transition of the dying from this human life to a life beyond and into the initial stages of the afterlife,” Peters said. “There are a variety of ways to be an SDE experiencer, you can be at bedside; about one-third of our cases are from experiencers who are just at the bedside in the room when someone is dying. Two-thirds are remote, that means they’re not even at the bedside when someone is dying, they’re doing life somewhere oftentimes they’re sleeping and they find themselves drawn into an experience, the shared death experience, in which they’re sharing a variety of phenomena.”

Peters has interviewed hundreds of people about their experiences and estimates that up to a quarter of the world’s population may have had an SDE.

The Shared Crossing Research Initiative’s recent survey of SDE accounts brings forth the range of phenomena common to the experience.

“So the most common phenomena would be this: alteration in the time-space continuum in the room. So, all of a sudden if you’re with them or even if you’re remote, you get a little dizzy, you realize your world is getting a little warped. Then you might feel a pressure, a pull upon your chest. If you’re bedside you might see a spirit, the soul-spirit leaving the body. It can look like steam, smoke, or mist coming off of the body. You’ll notice the light is changing all around you. People 51 percent of the time report seeing the dying. They report seeing the dying moving on a journey, and there is often communication with them. But they are with this loved one, presumably because that’s what it is most of the time, witnessing this transition,” Peters said.

10. The Word (1955)

For the audience ‘Ordet’ is a difficult film to watch, but once you’re watching you’re hooked. Based around a family in Denmark during the early 19 th century, a film which tests the religious values of its actors by the incidents what occur. Great lighting is used during one scene as a tracking shot of a man walks slowly towards the open casket, which really captures the emotion of the characters and the dread they’re feeling. Carl Theodor Dreyer is regarded as one of the absolute best directors that world cinema has had to offer, and with overwhelming reason. His films had a realism to them unlike any other, and his emphasis on vivid, indelible imagery resulted in some of the best cinematography in film. ‘Ordet’ (‘The Word’) is arguably, the finest work he ever made.

Religion plays a crucial role in this quietly touching and sombre drama. It centres on a rural Danish family in 1925, with the patriarch Morten Borgen (Henrik Malberg), his three sons Mikkel (Emil Hass Christensen), Johannes (Preben Rye), and Anders (Cay Kristiansen) and Mikkel’s wife Inger (Birgitte Federspiel). A religious clash occurs between Morten and the local tailor, Peter (Ejner Federspiel) because of their children’s (Anders, and Anne, played by Gerda Nielsen) desire to marry. The astonishing happenings that then tide over the Borgen family underline the film’s emphasis on faith beyond religion and animosity. ‘Ordet’ is Dreyer’s masterpiece of emotion, with an exceptional handling of a sensitive subject.

9. Koyaanisqatsi (1982)

Godfrey Reggio’s film shows the contrast between humanity and nature as it goes on a spiritual journey contacting from beyond the realm of communication. Throughout the film a compatible connection between both society and mother earth is formed as it shows how humanity is destroying the earth through the essence of music mixed with emotional takes on the destruction of forests and desolated land. There’s a lot of messages within the film but it’s all based on your own interpretation, what I got from it was that it tried to give an insight on how we can take precautions and how we can preserve the wildlife and habitats. Time doesn’t matter it’s what we do with it. This is an example of cinema in its purest form, using just visuals to express something. It also speaks of how sometimes silence can say more than words.

8. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959)

Alain Resnais first feature film was revolutionary in terms of French wave cinema, this deeply emotional written script was based on a love affair between a Japanese Architect and French Actress. ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour’ starts off with a very disturbing and haunting introduction as it talks about the bombings of Hiroshima, using stock footage of the bombing and the aftermath that it caused to give you that unsettling feeling as the film uses flashbacks as a cinematic tool to retell the horrors of the second world war and nuclear warfare. This 1959 work of art is classed as one of the finest pieces of French wave cinema in history.

‘Hiroshima, mon amour’ weeps. It whimpers and bleeds sorrow from every pore that it’s gorgeous, perfect, powerful, horrifying, hellish nightmarish frames hold. Then suddenly it soars, full of life and love and passion- before sinking into existentialism, grief, guilt, isolation and a relatably chilling human fear. It’s a film of feeling that flows as a river through a countless stream of ideas, ideals and brutal revelations that work on more levels than you’d expect a 90-minute movie could manage, let alone one as expansive and epic as 4 hours in length. Director Alain Resnais imbues every moment with meaning and that is why it’s up here, why it’s the best and dare I say the greatest piece of work the Nouvelle Vague ever produced. Like ‘La Jetée’, it’s an inspired piece of editing that escapes the calculated coldness of its technique to bring us something richly intimate and involving. Resnais’ films, however experimental, are always incredibly involving to watch evolve and ‘Hiroshima, mon amour’ is doubtlessly the very best of them. Timeless.

7. Landscape in the Mist (1988)

One of Greek director Theo Angelopoulos’ finest (and most accessible) works, ‘Landscape in the Mist’ follows two children who abandon their widowed mother in search of a lost father. Along the way, we are treated to the man’s characteristic neutrality- never straying too far between extremes of emotion and making every extreme feel both organic and dramatically rousing. Two scenes in particular make this 1988 drama an essential watch for all fans of cinema and especially those uninitiated with the director’s work- but I dare not spoil them. To divulge any scene or secret Landscape in the Mist holds would be to do its uniquely hypnotic power a disservice. Moving at a slightly challenging pace despite its length- the movie’s greatest moments with nonetheless move you beyond measure. A towering treasure of niche cinema.

6. Nostalgia (1983)

Tackling the impossible by trying to allow us to empathize with the mind of a man who has closed himself to the outside world, Andrei Tarkovsky’s dedication to his life-long adoration of art differs from ‘Cinema Paradiso’ in that instead of being rewarded after years of bitterness and regret with the revelation that all is OK – our protagonist Andrei here discovers nothing.

Nothing at all! Not that he was wrong and there was no hope to begin with – just an absolute lack of any stimulation – from either pain or pleasure. Tarkovsky’s film deals with a Russian who is wandering about Italy, attempting to re-ignite any passion for life by tracking through the most beautiful part in the world. He drifts through churches, broken down museums and abandoned ruins in the hope of finding something to keep him going. As an audience we marvel at the gorgeous photography and breath-taking beauty that surrounds Andrei. The man, however, feels nothing.

And then at the end we watch him attempt to carry a lit candle across a ruin for a sold seven minute tracking shot. No explanation. No catharsis. As observers we have to wonder why: To beg for an answer. Why? Why the hell would he waste the last of his life to attempt such a futile endeavour? What will this accomplish? Something? Anything…? Exactly!

5. Au Hasard Balthazar (1966)

Considered to be one of the greatest cinematic works of the twentieth century, Robert Bresson’s film ‘Au Hasard Balthazar’ narrates a story of a donkey named Balthazar and the life it lived through. Throughout the film, you see the donkey witness various types of abuse by the number of owners which it had. Balthazar wasn’t the only thing that witnessed abuse Mari was mentally and physically abused but throughout all this love and affection was more than enough for this special donkey.  In some ways, Balthazar was represented as the obstacles we encounter throughout life.

Questionably Nouvelle Vague considering Bresson’s long-established style, ‘Balthazar’ is nonetheless unique for its protagonist being a donkey and involved with the movement through Goddard volunteering to cut its trailer. What the continuing evolution of Robert Bresson’s method in conjunction to an explosion of creativity brought on by Breathless birthed was an austere flick that still manages to be ambitious both thematically and stylistically. Bresson makes himself comfortable outside of his comfort zone tackling a non-human subject and yet still somehow illuminating a remarkable amount of human cruelty and tragedy in a way even movies centred solely around people struggle to compete with. It’s a work of invigorating emotion and prevailing warmth that eclipses the malice of many of its characters- which speaks to the power of the character of Balthazar and the fantastic way Bresson highlights and magnifies the tiniest expressions of an animal. Unique and ever-moving.

4. The Seventh Seal (1957)

Ingmar Bergman’s take on philosophy and religious beliefs during the Black Death, this film portrays a game of chess between death and a medieval knight and the human incarnation of death. In my opinion this film raises a lot of questions based around life, death and the presence of god, as this is shown by the multiple characters we meet throughout the journey. This film has become a cult classic over the past six decades.

From the very first images of Bergman’s iconic document on faith, fear, and contentment, there is a spell cast on you. The stark, grainy look at the sea, the coast and on it a courageous knight and his fateful encounter with the personification of death defines the film’s clarity of objective, even if it leaves scope for a seductive, almost terrifying ambiguity to be present constantly. Benefiting from a magnetic performance from the incomparable Max von Sydow and a band of actors who elevate Bergman’s astonishing material, based on his play, “Wood Painting”, to unexpected levels, ‘The Seventh Seal’ in its meager 90 minutes has the influence of an old fable passed down through generations that propels imagination far more expansive than it itself can hope to contain. Gunnar Fischer’s sparkling, crisp black-and-white ensures that the harrowing intensity crawls under our skin. The stream-like fluidity is a result of a narrative unfurled with sublime confidence and a tangible levelheadedness. It may be a thoroughly simple story, that nonetheless harbors valuable ideas in its bosom, but it is sewn with a fabric so intricate and bold, you can’t help but look at it over and over for it to translate into a lasting memory.

3. The Turin Horse (2011)

A difficult viewing experience from the get go, helped by the ominous music playing in the background as we see a cab driver struggling to drag his horse back on their journey home. Béla Tarr may put off a lot of people but he is most certainly one of the greatest predecessors of slow cinema movement, as he envisioned a new cinematic tool to show the art within his work as it’s filled with anguish and despair. This is his final film as he announced his retirement from film making and the film is meant to be inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche.

‘The Turin Horse’ follows the life of a cab driver, daughter and their horse and is set across six days, which represent the end of days. The family have a psychological breakdown which leads to an inevitable death, as they try to proceed through their day to day activities acting like everything’s the same as it once was, in hope that the horse regains full health. Shot in Tarr’s own unique style in only 30 takes, one of the most emotionally draining film I have ever seen. It’s certainly not an inspiring or uplifting film as Tarr slowly drains every ounce of joy from life as he paints the portrait of humanity coming to the end of existence.

2.  The Mirror (1975)

Andrei Tarkovsky, a visionary philosophical filmmaker from 1962 through to 1986, made this artistic film in 1975 during Soviet Russia. Tarkovsky formed his own cinematic language; using aesthetics of life and haunting reflections of childhood throughout his film ‘Mirror’. The film has an unrestricted flow of human emotion and on-screen poetry complimented by the stunning cinematography, shot by Georgi Reberg.

Tarkovsky effectively used his father’s poetry to probe the emotional truth about his parents’ relationship, as well as quoting four of his poems shared by a personal artistic core between Andrei and his father. ‘Mirror’ narrates a dying poet recalling memories from his childhood and tragic events which devastated the people of Russia, virtually plotless this visually stunning imagery follows a nonlinear narrative which was nearly deemed incomprehensible by critics on its initial release. As time passed people began to respect the film more classing it as one of the best films of all time.

1. Andrei Rublev (1966)

Largely considered as one of the finest films of all time Andrei Tarkovsky’s ‘Andrei Rublev’ takes us on a spiritual journey based on a 15 th century iconic painter, yet we throughout the entire film we never see him paint. I believe ‘Andrei Rublev’ is the greatest example of Russian auteur Andrei Tarkovsky’s concept of sculpting in time. A lot of his latter work was abstract, as he dealt with incredibly personal themes and visualization, which was scattered throughout periods of time. With ‘Andrei Rublev’, Tarkovsky captured time itself and then stroked it with the deepest hues of an artist’s soul. Tarkovsky’s probably the only filmmaker who could scale the highest achievement in depicting an artist’s repression. He explores the oppressive regimes of Russia that are as indigenous to the country as its profound literature which has surprisingly questioned the most compelling questions concerning the spiritual and metaphysical. Many of Tarkovsky’s later traits, including filming the flow of nature can be observed in Andrei Rublev’s journey. It is a film that movies you, shatters you and makes you think — both during film and long after the credits have rolled.

Interstellar

Interstellar is my favorite and the best spiritual awakening movie because of the depth in the storyline, the significant effects, and the best music composition for a film. We could consider it a Sci-Fi movie with spiritual awareness and insights into other dimensions that are really vivid and mind-blowing. Be surprised by the Hollywood blockbuster of Christopher Nolan and star Matthew McConaughey in his best movie.

Peaceful Warrior

Peaceful Warrior is about a world-champion gymnast that wants to find the purpose of his life. He encounters a stranger and discovers a path to enlightenment.

Matrix Trilogy

Matrix is known for the red and blue pill. What would you consider choosing? One pill keeps you deep in the matrix and its illusion. Another pill breaks through the illusion into a completely different perspective of the world.

Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas is a spiritual awakening movie about six individuals belonging to different generations. They all have emotional difficulties and slowly begin to realize how their human activities impact their love’s lives.

The Life of Pi

I watched this spiritual movie in the cinemas. I really loved how PI Patel had to survive in a boat that was adrift on the ocean. He had enormous challenges, and this Hollywood spiritual movie to watch shows the power of will and compassion.

The Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happiness is about Chris Gardner, that lost all of his life's earnings selling a product he focused on. I consider it one of the best spiritual movies of all time because it shows us that we can't deny the darkness within the light.

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is all about forgiveness. It tells the stories about two prisoners that make friends. It may have been the first inspirational spiritual movie which really touched me, besides the Green Mile.

The Green Mile

The Green Mile is a mystical, spiritual movie about John Coffey, a black man accused of murdering two girls. You can consider this movie a spiritual healing movie. Simultaneously, this is one of the Hollywood movies that manipulates us into believing that we can never show our unique gifts to the world. We have to be always aware that this is an illusion.

Rocky Balboa is a nostalgic spiritual film about creating the impossible! It is about a boxer that fights his way from nowhere to the top. If you good consider a movie a "sport spiritual movie," I would choose this to be the one that motivates and hides with deep life insights and truth.

The Terminator

The Terminator is one of the old school spiritual films that waves the signs of what could happen if we go on a fear-based and greedy path in society and not a love-based path. Some people really believe "The Terminator" is just Sci-Fi, but it is actually closer to reality than most anticipate. We just have to look at virtual reality and artificial intelligence developments. It is crucial to understand how to build AI's that will be in the service of the whole.

X-Men is about the awakening of supernatural powers. We see more and more series and movies about this subject. This is truly a time to be alive! X-Men already created several incredible blockbusters about different time zones, dimensions, and realities. I highly recommend you watch them.

Inception is a sci-fi movie about stealing information from a target by entering their dreams to influence people. For me, it is a lot closer to reality than Sci-Fi, because we can change our reality when we can change our beliefs about reality. Leonardo Di Caprio plays one of his best roles in this blockbuster. This inspirational spiritual movie is action-packed, innovative, and expanding for your consciousness.

Astral City - A Spiritual Journey

Astral City is a spiritual movie about a deceased doctor entering the astral world in the afterlife. Astral City is mighty, can be life-changing, and shows possible realms in the afterlife.

I Origins is a spiritual awakening movie about the research of the human eyes. The eyes are the window to the soul. Unexcitingly, this is one of the best spiritual films about the possibility of reincarnation and mysticism behind the realm of the known.

Avatar is one of the best spiritual movies to see the power of the mind, virtual realities, and what we are truly capable of achieving in the centuries to come. It is a really spiritual movie and can be considered a fight between the spiritual and materialistic world.

Into the Wild

Into the Wild tells a story about Christopher McCandless, who dared to go on his life journey. This is an inspirational spiritual movie that keeps you awake late at night.

The Intouchables

The Intouchables is about the true meaning of friendship. Most importantly, it is about the playfulness and lightness of life! We can never be over serious, because we would stiffle the energy, therefore we are not fully living.

Best Spiritual Series 2023

Blockbuster hollywood.

Dark is a German production, and it is about the missing of children. Dark is about several parallel worlds and jumping from one world to another, seemingly. This is an insane production, a compelling series with great actors, and a genius storyline.

Westworld started about a real-life robotic western game, in which humans can visit a park and play the game. Until the artificial humans in the park begin to develop strong desires and emotions. Season 1 and 2 are a masterpiece! You will not stop watching Westworld after you started.

Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon is about future humans that can preserve their death by transforming their consciousness from one body to another, enabling a person to live very long. Altered Carbon is about the solving of a crime. It may be brutal from time to time. At the same time, it can be very expanding for your worldview.

Person of Interest

Person of Interest is an American science fiction crime drama series about the challenge of global surveillance. The series from Jonathan Nolan has 103 episodes in 5 seasons and finished in 2016.

Sense 8 is about eight human beings that are cross-connected via strong telepathy all over the world. The series is eye-opening about the concept of oneness in spiritual circles.

‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’ is the final installment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. It stars Frank Oz, Kenny Baker, Ewan McGregor, Anthony Daniels, Natalie Portman, Christopher Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Ian McDiarmid, and Hayden Christensen.

It is a 2006 film about the life of the Tibetan tantric yogi, Milarepa.

What Dreams May Come (1998) with Robin Williams is best film on reincarnation ever made, really surprised it is not on your list. Somewhere in Time (1980) with Christopher Reeve is also good. So many other films about relationships through many lifetimes.

A "spiritual journey" in the context of film can mean a variety of things; it can be a film that has a heavy focus on religion or culture and spiritual elements; it can be a film where the characters seek self-discovery, or it can be a film that has some very ethereal and mystical vibes. There is no set definition of a spiritual journey as a wide variety of genres and types of films can take you on an exquisite experience.

Although all of these films are different, some being light-hearted and others despondent and dreary, they still share one thing in common: their ability to feel abstract and symbolic. Whether it's the fantastical world of Wolfwalkers , the odd and psychedelic society of The Holy Mountain , or the grounded reality of Taste of Cherry , these films will all send you on a unique spiritual journey of their own kind.

'The Holy Mountain' (1973)

If there's a movie that invented the term "spiritual journey" in the context of filmmaking, it's Alejandro Jodorowsky 's The Holy Mountain . The film doesn't even have a plot and is very much the literal meaning of a spiritual journey. It follows various characters as they journey towards a sacred mountain through a bizarre and fantasized version of our reality. It's not something everyone will love, as it is very out of the ordinary and breaks all the rules of traditional storytelling.

The whole film is a giant metaphorical and religious experience, commenting on a wide variety of topics that relate to societal implications of the world. It's a commentary on religion, corruption, and power, and it's a film that genuinely feels timeless as its themes are still apparent today. It's truly amazing to see how a film set in a weird wonderland still manages to convey issues the real world experiences and critique the flaws within the human race, and bring light to its successes.

'The Darjeeling Limited' (2007)

Unfortunately, The Darjeeling Limited is often seen as one of the lesser films by writer/director Wes Anderson . However, it's a fantastic film that stays true to his style by consisting of many iconic Anderson quirks and having some of his most impressive visuals capturing stunning scenery and thriving places. The film tells the story of a trio of brothers who go on a voyage on a decorative train across India to attempt to regain a connection with one another after distancing themselves from each other after the death of their father.

The film quite literally tells the story of a spiritual journey as the characters themselves refer to this trip as one themselves. They seek to rebuild their connection as brothers and find themselves as people through the means of a cultural experience. The way India is captured in this film is delightful; the film is just boiling with culture in terms of authentic production design and some great establishing visuals and locations. The film is amazingly symbolic, commenting on the exposure to death , family relationships and brotherhood, and all sorts of trips a person experiences, whether that be an emotional or spiritual journey or just a regular old train ride.

'Embrace of the Serpent' (2015)

Embrace of the Serpent tells the story of a lone shaman who lives deep in the Amazon jungle and is visited by two different scientists who seek his help and knowledge. The film tackles themes of indigenous cultures native to Colombia, their heritage and spiritual beliefs, and the effects of the rapid growth of colonialism during the early 1900s.

From the opening shot alone, it is easy to get sucked into this film due to its fantastic presentation and sensory elements. It's a truly mystical and atmospheric experience that has a magnetic charm. The film focuses intensely on culture and beliefs and tells a fascinating and ethereal voyage along the specular setting of the Amazon River.

'Samsara' (2011)

Samsara is a documentary showcasing various snip bits of imagery from 25 different countries across the globe. The film took five years to produce and explores the multiple wonders the world has to offer from the perspective of other people, places, cultures, and environments.

It's a non-narrative film that conveys its themes through its gorgeous imagery. The film reflects on the world as a whole by capturing its serene beauty and showcasing mundane everyday occurrences. The film dives into culture, art, the general human experience, and enigmatic human spirituality.

'Midsommar' (2019)

Midsommar starts seeming like it would be a dreamy vacation but swiftly turns into a terrorizing incident; it follows Dani ( Florence Pugh ) and her boyfriend's group of friends as they go on holiday to a Midsummer festival in Sweden. At first, things seem pleasing until the group realizes they are in the hands of a demented pagan cult .

The film is essentially the horror-movie version of a spiritual journey and acts more like a "spiritual nightmare." The film has a lot of cultist imagery and symbolism and stretches deep into their lore and background. Throughout the film, we see several rituals and intense situations the cult inflicts on our characters. It's a genuinely haunting exploration of their heritage, showcasing how dangerous these kinds of groups can be. With this and Hereditary , director Ari Aster has a twisted interest in cults and human grief.

'Wolkwalkers' (2020)

Wolfwalkers tells the story of a time when magic was seen as esoteric rituals, and wolves were perceived as demonic beasts. One day a girl named Robyn ( Honor Kneafsey ) comes to Ireland as an apprentice Hunter to her father ( Sean Bean ), who is here to wipe out the remains of a deadly wolf pack. However, when Robyn explores the forbidden territory far beyond the town's walls, she befriends a magical native girl ( Eva Whittaker ) who can transform into a wolf and discovers that she has some enchanted powers of her own.

Honestly, any three films in Carton Saloon's Irish folklore trilogy can be seen as a spiritual journey. The Secret of Kells , Song of the Sea , and Wolkwalkers have stunning, stylized animation and revolve around stories of creatures and legends relating to Irish folklore. Wolfwalkers , in particular, is the newest of the three focusing on lycanthropic lore . The film feels magical and mythological due to its remarkable and spectral animation that lightens up its fantasy world.

'Taste of Cherry' (1997)

Abbas Kiarostami was one of the greatest filmmakers ever, and one of his greatest achievements was his ability to capture genuine emotions, and Taste of Cherry is one of his finest examples of this. The film tells a simple yet astounding story of an Iranian man named Mr. Badii ( Homayoun Ershadi ), who drives through a city seeking help with a grueling task. However, the film digs deeper than this simple synopsis as Mr. Badii is looking for someone to bury him after he commits suicide.

Taste of Cherry 's themes are some of the most profound and meaningful reflections of life conveyed by any film, commenting on the meanings and different stages of life and the thoughts of ending one. The film doesn't shy away from expressing sensitive topics such as death and suicide, as we see people's reactions to these things based on their age, culture, and experiences. It's a very powerful character journey that extends even beyond his life. It's a truly remarkable film and one that isn't for the faint of heart.
