TOP 19 things to do in Keflavík

If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, then Keflavík is one place you definitely don’t want to miss. This charming little town is nestled right by the sea, and it’s packed with all kinds of cool things to do and see.

From soaking in geothermal spas (as Blue lagoon) to hiking through stunning landscapes, Keflavík has something for everyone.

So, buckle up and get ready for an unforgettable journey – because we’re about to show you the best things to do in Keflavík !

Perhaps every tourist who visits Iceland, the country of fire and ice, will arrive by plane at Keflavik Airport on Iceland’s west coast. This is the first and last destination you will visit in Iceland, and while there are things worth seeing, I recommend focusing on the more intriguing places in other parts of Iceland.

If you are looking for ideas on what to do in Keflavík , we have prepared some interesting tips and recommendations for you to do in Keflavík, where to eat , and where to stay in Keflavík.

The Blue Lagoon, a thermal bath about 40 minutes from the airport and frequented by practically everyone who has a layover in Keflavik, a free afternoon, or who wants to start a vacation around Iceland, is without a doubt the most interesting and most visited tourist destination.

Best way how to get from Keflavík airport to Reykjavík

The mode of transportation is a key consideration when traveling in or out of Keflavík. Car hire in Keflavik or bus transportation to Reykjavik are the two most popular choices.

If you decide to rent a car in Keflavik, you can use our car rental search engine and read our article on car rental tips in Iceland .

The second alternative is to take a bus from one of the companies that has its own shuttle buses. You have the option of using Re.is or Flybus.

Best transport from airport to Blue lagoon

Blue lagoon is one of the nearest hot springs near Keflavík, but even so, the distance between Keflavík and Blue lagoon is about 40 km.

There are the same transport options as to Reykjavik, and you can take a direct bus directly from the airport. You can book only transport or transportation with admission to the Blue Lagoon.

My personal recommendation is to book transport and admission to the Blue Lagoon at Re.is.

What to do in Keflavík

Right in the city you will find several museums, one smaller shopping street in the city center, a swimming pool with several pools and hot tubs.

If you take a trip out of town, you can reach the famous Blue Lagoon in about half an hour, walk through the Gunnuhver geothermal area, walk through an abandoned boat in a nearby fishing village or set out to observe the aurora borealis at a nearby lighthouse.

Visit the Blue lagoon

iceland tourist keflavik

I recommend going to The Blue Lagoon on your final day for two reasons.

  • 1: If you get your hair wet here, it becomes exceedingly dry, itchy, and difficult to comb. It will take several washes for me to feel normal again.
  • And 2: Because the Blue Lagoon is close to Keflavik Airport, it makes sense to stop by on your way back. Reykjavik is 50 kilometers from Keflavik Airport, and the Blue Lagoon is 45 minutes away, so you should avoid going back on yourself.

The Blue Lagoon is the quintessential Iceland spa experience, with its beautiful milky-turquoise color. Many tourists consider it a must-see destination, yet admission is prohibitively pricey.

It’s also one of those places you know you should go to, but it’s unlikely to live up to the reputation. Regardless, I believe it is a must-do in Iceland! Even though you won’t get the Blue Lagoon to yourself, it’s a fantastic experience (although if you come earlier you have a better chance of it being quieter).

Remember to bring your own towel or you will be charged for one.

Gunnuhver geothermal area

Gunnuhver geothermal area

This boiling mud is part of Reykjanes’ high temperature zone. This hot spring region is one of many in Reykjavik, and they are all here because of the Atlantic ridge.

The environment is perilous, and we had to be quite cautious as we approached the hot springs. Gunnuhver has changed its location, and you can see that at Gunnuhver that a newly builde platform.

When the former platform was built it was of course at a save distant but as you will see it is now in the middle of the hot spring. This is what may be expected, but when on the other hand one never knows when it does.

According to folklore, the female ghost Gunna terrorized the area. When ghosts or trolls caused difficulties in Iceland, the locals generally approached the priest to remedy the matter. The priest enticed her to gather a thread of wool, which caused her to tumble into the spring. Was that, however, the end of her? Locals believe otherwise and attribute all of the changes in the area to her.

Kleifarvatn lake

kleifarvatn-lake

Kleifarvatn lake is around 10 km2. It is the largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula and the third largest in Iceland’s south. It is one of Iceland’s deepest lakes, measuring approximately 97 meters.

There are some hot springs on the lake’s southern edge, and the water from these flows into the lake. Kleifarvatn began to dwindle after a large earthquake in 2000; 20% of its surface has already vanished.

The volcanic surroundings of the lake are unusual and attractive, making it an ideal location for photographers. You may take a drive down to the lake and walk on the beach.

I like to head out to Kleifarvatn. It is a beautiful lake on the Reykjanes peninsula. In wintertime this is an ideal place to see the Northern lights.

Krýsuvík and Seltún

krysuvik-seltun

Soon after leaving Lake Kleifarvatn, you will arrive in the Krýsuvík region, where you will see Seltún on your right. A hot spring location. Take care. Stay on the trail and avoid getting burned. Hold your children’s hands if you have them. This is not a children’s play area.

Bridge between continents

bridge-between-continents

The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates shift and drift apart in an endless clash of awe-inspiring forces beneath the gaping rifts and chasms at the tip of the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland and elsewhere in the drift zone or the Icelandic Graben, according to continental drift theory.

It is an extension of the Mid Atlantic Ridge. The connecting link between two continents. This is a fifteen-meter-long bridge constructed on top of one of these fractures. The fissure is deep, and the scenery is spectacular. However, keep in mind to be cautious in the region. The lava fields are dangerous to walk in, so stick to the established trails.

Duus Museum

duus-museum-keflavik

A cultural center and an art museum can be found at the Duus-house. There is also a collection of over 100 different boat models, representing nearly every fishing boat used in Iceland between 1945 and 1960.

It appears modest, yet it houses a large museum about the history of the Reykjanes Peninsula. During WWII, the fishing town and trading post were transformed into a military airstrip. A display of ship models used in Iceland.

The Icelandic Museum of Rock ‘n’ Roll

Museum of Rock 'n' Roll

A short distance to the south of us is a Rock ‘n’ Roll museum, which is located here since many prominent rock stars came from this town in the 1960s and 1970s (1960-1980).

brimketill-lava-rock-pool

Is one of the most popular natural attractions in the Reykjanes region. Pool-like in shape. It is formed by the endless surf breaking on the lava rock coast.

Hafnarberg Sea Cliffs

hafnarberg-sea-cliffs

Reykjanesviti lighthouse

reykjanesviti-lighthouse-keflavik

The oldest lighthouse in Iceland, Reykjanesviti, acts as a landfall light for Reykjavik and Keflavik. The original structure, called Valahnkur, was built on top of the cliff in 1878, but portions of the cliff kept sliding off, so they built a second one nearby. The current tower, which is 31 meters (102 feet) tall, was completed in 1908.

Reykjanes alone has 11 lighthouses, the majority of which are still operational. As you may have noticed, the scenery here near the peninsula’s tip is incredibly desolate and windswept. Previously, the only person who resided here was the light keeper.

Stekkjarkot

Stekkjarkot-turf-house

A pleasant trip to see a genuine 1800s fisherman’s cottage composed of grass, stone, and lumber. There is a lovely information sign and a photo opportunity. There aren’t many visitors in the neighborhood. But great to visit briefly before heading to nearby attractions.

swimming-pool-keflavik

The local swimming pool in Keflavík is called Waterworld and you find it not far away from main shopping street in the town. The ticket for one entrance cost 1000 ISK and you can find there one main big outdoor swimming pool, few hot tubs with different temperature a depth of water and saunas.

Waterworld in Keflavík is definitely nice and cheaper alternative for all those, who want to rest and soak in the warm water after long day of travelling.

Is Keflavík good place for northern lights?

The city of Keflavík may not be the best location for northern lights, but you really want to hunt for Aurora borealis, you can travel by car to nearby lighthouse in Gardur, where is much less light polution than in town itself.

Lighthouse in Gardur is very favourite place for everybody, who want to try luck and watch for northern lights maybe in theirs last of night of stay in Iceland.

Keflavík – A Historical Town of Iceland

Basic information.

Keflavík , a small beautiful town is located in southwest Iceland positioned along the Reykjanes Peninsula . Keflavík (meaning ‘Driftwood Bay’) is a home to Keflavík Airport that marks the footprints of travelers coming from around the world. You can visit this colorful town on your way to or from Reykjavík. You can discover a few cafes, shops, restaurants and museums in the town to make your trip memorable. In the year 1995, Keflavík merged with Njarðvík and Hafnir towns to form the municipality of Reykjanesbær . With a collective population of 15,500, this town is referred to as both Keflavík and Reykjanesbær.

History of Keflavík

Founded by Scottish entrepreneurs in the 16th century, Keflavík was initially developed as a fishing port and fish processing center. It is the fifth populated town in Iceland and still lacks in the number of travelers, even though it is located so close to the airport. During the Second World War and the Cold War, the Keflavík Iceland Naval Air Station played a vital role in many operations. There is a vast history behind this town that makes its role quite important in the survival and development of Iceland and the town itself. In 1940, United States forces stationed in Iceland built a base that later became Keflavík International Airport. During that time, the airstrip was used as an important Allied military base that denied Germany a strategic hold on Iceland. It also served as a critical stopover for refueling and logistical support.

At that time, it was known as Naval Air Station Keflavík. During the Cold War, NATO forces used this naval base as a monitoring station for water traffic in the Atlantic Ocean. This maritime operation was later expanded by the US Air Force. They added their radar capabilities, in-flight refueling as well as marine rescue. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the United States began to stop its operations. In 2006, the Keflavík naval air base was finally closed. The barracks that were used during the cold war are now used as accommodation for students, or have been changed into hotels and guesthouses.

The US presence at the Keflavik town was also controversial. The discrimination started during the early days when many women fell for the Americans stationed there. A significant number of Icelanders were also against NATO membership and the militarization of the town. The presence of Americans at that time led to the investment of money into Iceland, contributing to the development and infrastructure of Iceland.

Culture of Keflavík

Keflavík was well-known for being home to the country’s best musicians.  The Americana rock n’ roll scene by US military personnel was also introduced in Keflavík. For this reason, the town is also known by nicknames, “the Beatle town” and “the Liverpool of the North”. It is widely known as Iceland’s “Capital of Rock n’ Roll”. The Icelandic Museum of Rock ‘n’ Roll incorporates punk, pop, and folk exhibitions portraying the history of Icelandic music as a whole. It includes information boards about several native musicians including Björk and Sigur Rós.

The museum includes a cinema that is dedicated to the country’s music scene. It plays popular documentaries such as ‘Screaming Masterpiece’ by Ari Alexander. This documentary discovers why Iceland, an artistic country that was built on its literature, became known to the world for its thriving music scene. Every museum of the Keflavik discusses the  “Viking World.” Five exhibitions of the museums teach visitors about the history, traditions, and customs of the Vikings in Iceland , exploring their heritage and their intrinsic connection to Iceland. You will also find a settlement zoo that displays the animal breeds Vikings would have raised and traditional Icelandic turf houses.

Way to Reach Keflavík Town

Located at a distance of 47 kilometers from Reykjavík , the Keflavík town can be accessed easily. The village resides west of Reykjavík , the capital of Iceland.

Because of its convenient location close to the International Airport of Iceland, many travelers choose to book accommodation in Keflavik for their whole stay in Iceland. We do not recommend doing that since there is not that much going on in the town, very few guided tours and activities leave from the town and if you are going to go on self driving day tours, you will always have to start your day with driving to Reykjavik and start your self driving trip from there. We always recommend that if you would like to stay in one place for your whole stay in Iceland, you should stay in Reykjavik. However, Keflavik is a great location to stay after reaching Iceland after a long flight or on your last day if you have an early flight home.

Even when the base was in operation, Keflavik was more of a workaday town than a tourist attraction. Though the airport is just a few minutes away, it’s not advisable for tourists to stay in this small, mostly residential town, unless catching a very early flight the next day. Within the town are a few hotels and hostels – the Flug Hotel, the Hotel Keflavik , campsite and the youth hostel – as well as a supermarket, post office, tourist office, banks and a BSI bus terminal that offers daily connections to Reykjavik.

There’s a restaurant in the Flug Hotel , the resto-bar Rain , which offers tasty pizzas and fish, and Paddy’s Irish Bar and Pub , and whale watching trips depart from the town in summer.

About Keflavik International Airport

Keflavik International Airport (KEF), locally known as Keflavíkurflugvöllur, is the biggest airport in Iceland. Almost seven million passengers arrive here annually. It serves as the gateway and the central hub of transportation for international travelers in the land of fire and ice.

The single-terminal Icelandic airport is open all year round to over 90 destinations and is operated by Isavia, a government enterprise for the Nordic country’s aviation industry.

Where is Keflavik Airport?

Keflavik International Airport is located at the tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula , the country’s southwesternmost region. The distance between Keflavik Airport and downtown Reykjavik is 31 miles (50 kilometers), and it takes about 45 minutes to drive.

The main road to Reykjavik from Keflavik Airport is called Reykjanesbraut. Before reaching Reykjavik, you will drive through Hafnarfjordur and Kopavogur , two small municipalities south of Reykjavik.

Is Keflavik Airport the Same as Reykjavik Airport?

Although it serves the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, Keflavik Airport (KEF) is different from Reykjavik Airport (RKV) . While the former lies in the town of Keflavik , the latter is located in Reykjavik city.

In addition, Keflavik Airport caters to international flights from territories outside Iceland, while Reykjavik Airport only handles domestic and private aviation, plus Greenland and Faroe Islands. In particular, the domestic airport services flights to Akureyri , Egilsstadir , Husavik , Grimsey , and more local town airports in Iceland.

With its expansion over the years, the Icelandic airport added more locations to the mix, including Tel Aviv, Alicante, Prague, Nice, and Barcelona. New travel routes are regularly added as Iceland’s popularity and tourism industry skyrocket.

A total of 28 international airlines provide aviation services to millions of passengers at Keflavik Airport yearly. The leading airlines that fly here are the prestigious Icelandair and budget airline Play. Icelandair is the national carrier of Iceland, while Play is a new low-cost air carrier founded in 2019.

Keflavik Airport Amenities and Facilities

Although relatively small, KEF Airport is modern and offers the same facilities you’ll find at large airports worldwide, only on a smaller scale. The airport has restaurants, bars, cafes, convenience stores, banks, a smoking area, duty-free shopping, and a VIP Lounge.

The airport, with a total area of 10 square miles (25 square kilometers), has a single terminal divided into two buildings.

The main building features the arrivals and departures hall, customs, currency exchange and tax refund, car rentals, bus ticket terminal, and a wide selection of shops and restaurants.

The south building houses the border control facilities and additional stores.

As you go around the airport, whether for business or pleasure, you can access its free and unlimited Wi-Fi. Families with small children can also take advantage of the airport’s dedicated play area and strollers.

Otherwise, you’ll have to locate specialized alcohol shops operated by the government, which have limited opening hours, are sparse in the country’s remote regions, and have high taxes and duties.

You will also find money exchange services and a convenience store where you can buy a local SIM card. However, if you have a SIM card from anywhere in the EU/EEA, it will work in Iceland as it does at home.

History of Keflavik International Airport

Keflavik International Airport is a relic from the “invasion of Iceland” in World War II when Allied troops took over the island nation following the occupation of its colonial ruler, Denmark, at the hands of Nazi Germany.

The British laid out a landing strip in the town of Gardur, but considering Iceland’s incredibly strategic position in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, one strip was not quite enough.

Keflavik Airport as seen from above.

After taking control of the operation, US troops built and opened two airfields for military purposes in 1942 and 1943. After returning the property at the war’s conclusion, the United States reclaimed it in 1951 following a controversial defence alliance with Iceland.

This pact, which saw Iceland joining NATO in 1949, caused decades of national protest. The circumstances, however, also allowed decades of development of the main international airport in Iceland.

The airport first started to separate civilian and military use in 1987, with the opening of the Leifur Eriksson Terminal. Named after the first European to reach the Americas, it would go on to handle all visitors coming to or leaving Iceland by air.
