Il Divo Greatest Hits Tour Review 2022

Who Are Il Divo?

Il Divo is the most commercially successful classical crossover group in international music history, which Il Divo still enjoys since they first banded together in 2003. With over 30 million albums sold, 160 gold and platinum albums in 33 countries to their credit Il Divo were the first Classical Crossover artists to have an album debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart.

First discovered and mentored by Simon Cowell in 2003, the group became a pioneer of a musical genre unknown until that time when in 2004 they released their debut album “IL Divo”.

  • Sebastien Izambard is a French musician, singer, composer and record producer who provides the warm soul pop voice to Il Divo. Musical lovers might recognize him as The Businessman/The King in Le Petit Prince , the 2002 Riccardo Cocciante musical.
  • David Miller is an American opera singer whom Broadway fans might recognize from playing Rodolfo in Baz Luhrmann’s version of Puccini’s La Boheme in a company that included Alfie Boe and Ben Davis .
  • Urs Buhler is a Swiss classically trained tenor who performed around the Netherlands singing oratorios and a classical repertoire before joining Il Divo in 2003.
  • The late Carlos Marin was a Spanish baritone raised in Madrid, Spain, who recorded his first album when he was 8 years old. In addition to his vast repertoire of opera roles, he had also made a name for himself in musical theatre playing the roles of Marius in Les Miserables  and The Beast in  Beauty and the Beast . Tragically on December 7, 2021, Carlos Marín contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized in Manchester, England. He was subsequently put into a medically induced coma, and died just prior to Christmas at the age of 53.

The international four-member group has become the world leader in its genre, and has achieved a second to none success around the world, performing before personalities like as former US presidents George Bush , Bill Clinton or Barack Obama , or the Queen of England .

Il Divo The Greatest Hits Tour (2022) Honors the Late Carlos Marin

Il Divo Remembers Carlos Marin 2022

Following the tragic passing of Il Divo ‘s Carlos Marín from Coronavirus in December 2021, the remaining members of the multi-national group – America’s David Miller , France’s Sebastien Izambard and Switzerland’s Urs Bühler – chose to proceed with their tour in tribute to Marin. The tour, previously, the “For Once in My Life Tour” is now a Greatest Hits Tour and include special guest, Mexican American baritone Steven LaBrie .

“Carlos was a larger-than-life personality, with a rare combination of an incredibly beautiful, God-given voice and absolutely, immense talent. His passion, playfulness and sense of humor made for such a magical persona, and his laugh would always lift anyone up. He was loved by millions of fans all over the world and we were lucky and honored to be able to perform with him in our midst for so many years. We’ll deeply miss his playfulness, friendship, and brilliant voice. In his honor, we’ll be setting up a Carlos Marin Foundation and will be playing tribute to his singing in our future shows. May everyone remember him for his beautiful soul, his amazing talent and may he forever rest in peace.” – Miller, Izambard and Bühler in a joint statement

A Raw and Beautiful Concert of Love

The international tour just stopped over in Los Angeles and Anaheim. At the March 12, 2022 concert at the City National Grove of Anaheim , I was blessed to be in attendance so I could share my review with you.

The concert was a raw and at times even tearful hour and a half filled with favorites from their 18 year long catalog of music. Some songs were dedicated to the late Carlos Marin while others were dedicated to the wonderful response workers who have acted so well during these past two years of the pandemic.

Interspersed with the beautiful music were touching stories that the members shared about the late Carlos Marin and jokes with the guest artist, American-Mexican baritone Steven LaBrie, who shared how he first learned about Il Divo at a Barnes and Noble listening station. The younger baritone proved himself to be very capable of being on the stage with the three older and more experienced performers.

Il Divo Remembers Carlos Marin

The group’s easy camaraderie together on the stage suggests that he would make for a great choice as a permanent replacement for the group. We shall see what happens after this international tour is finished.

But the true highlight of the show was a beautiful and stark moment on the stage when the three original members of Il Divo sang and sat on stools bath

ed in light and an empty stool was lit up to represent Carlos. They even had Carlos’ voice piped into the auditorium. I do ubt there was not a tear-filled eye in the auditorium.

It is a show I, as a fan of Il Divo since 2004, will not likely forget and neither will any true Il Divo fan.

Il Divo grieves Carlos Marín as they prepare first tour since his death: 'He never will be there again'

il divo tour 2022 reviews

It is barely two months since the death of Carlos Marín , and his Il Divo mates are hurting.

Their grief is palpable as two of the three remaining members – David Miller and Urs Bühler – sit for a video chat with USA TODAY from their respective locations in upstate New York and Andorra in Europe.

The guys want to talk about their Greatest Hits Tour , which kicked off in Tampa, Florida, Friday and the future of Il Divo.

But, because even seasoned pros can’t be expected to conceal their sorrow, they also want to talk about their friend.

Marín died Dec. 19 in a hospital in Manchester, England, less than two weeks after being admitted with COVID-19. He was 53.

The classical crossover group, which also includes Sébastien Izambard, was in the midst of a Christmas tour when the Spanish baritone complained to Miller in a car ride to their hotel that he wasn’t feeling well, thinking his breathing difficulty stemmed from a massage the day before.

By the next morning, he was admitted to the hospital, where he tested positive for the coronavirus and was placed on oxygen.

But still, Miller says, Marín remained upbeat.

“He was optimistic beyond all reasonability,” Miller says with a wan smile as he recalls their texts. “We were telling him, 'If you’re in the hospital we have to cancel shows.' And he said: ‘No, I’ll be fine. I feel good.’ That was the last communication we had with him.”

Marín’s prognosis rapidly declined, and he was put on a ventilator. Il Divo canceled the remainder of their U.K. tour and the group returned to their respective homes around the world.

A couple of days later, they received a call that the singer had died.

There are a few moments of silence and downward glances as Miller revisits the painful events.

Then Bühler shares that he just returned from Madrid, Marín’s hometown, and as he walked through the city and sat in public spaces, he thought he might see his friend come around the corner.

“It comes to your mind because he used to frequent those places, but no, he won’t be there and he never will be there again,” Bühler says quietly as Miller puts a hand over tearful eyes.

It is poignant and painful, yet the group knows they must carry on – for the memory of Marín and to help fans, as well as themselves, heal from the profound loss.

More: If someone is grieving, is an emoji really enough?

This leads to the worldwide tour, retooled in Marín’s honor,  with vocalist Steven LaBrie , a Mexican American baritone, filling in as a guest for nearly a year of dates.

Il Divo has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and is nearing its 20th anniversary . It’s not the ideal time to wrestle with an uncertain future, but Bühler is candid about the tenuousness.

“This could be an absolutely wonderful experience or it could be the last tour Il Divo ever does,” he says. “We really don’t know at this point. But we are very eager to stand on stage and see each other again.”

Miller and Bühler shared some additional thoughts on Marín, what to expect from their live shows and the addition of LaBrie onstage.

Question: What went into the decision to continue with the tour?

David Miller: Fans have told us how our music has helped them through rough times, deaths, battles with illnesses. So why shouldn’t we endeavor to do the same for ourselves in this situation? It has been very hard. The shock is going to continue on into starting the tour. When we’re standing up there and (Carlos) is not with us, it will hit us the hardest. There’s no way to prepare for that.

Urs Bühler: I’m 100% convinced Carlos would have wanted us to go on, and I do understand some fans are upset about it. But a lot of them want this to go on because music is something that will lift us up and be something positive. But until we are together on that stage again and share that incomprehensible feeling of our loss with our audience, we won’t know the depths it will affect us.

Simon Cowell talks 'AGT Extreme'

Q: How do you plan to showcase Carlos’ legacy in the show?

Bühler: (The tour) was supposed to be in celebration of the last album (“For Once in My Life: A Celebration of Motown”). We were going to present most of that album, adapt the wardrobe to that repertoire with certain colors of suits and ankle boots and since there’s a lot of rhythm in these songs, maybe some dance steps. But that idea has shifted completely. We really want to make this a celebration of Il Divo with Carlos and that extraordinary voice and performer he was. So the styling of the show will be as classic Il Divo as we can make it; black tie, nice, elegant suits. We’re not going to be dancing. That wouldn’t be appropriate. We’re going to sing the big Il Divo classics, Carlos Marín’s Il Divo. We have a couple of things prepared that I hope we can make work in order to have as much of Carlos' essence and presence onstage.

Q: How does Steven fit into the group?

Miller: When I started working on a solo opera album – going on 10 years now, but I hope to release it this year – I asked him to feature on a duet with me on the album. His image just popped into my head a few days after getting the news about Carlos. We sat on it for a while and there was a part of me that did not want to go on because how could we ever without Carlos? But the other part is, Il Divo is bigger than the four of us. It exists because of the collaboration of four voices in service to music and if there is a fourth voice, why not try? (Steven is) about 17 years younger than us. He had the interest and inclination and sent us an a capella recording and it was powerful. He’s got that  " je ne sais quoi." At every turn, it felt like we were getting a yes from the universe.

In the beginning: Il Divo in the early days with (from left) David Miller, Carlos Marín, Sébastien Izambard and Urs Bühler.

No one in multinational group Il Divo is Irish, but Saturday night’s concert in Steinmetz Hall had the feeling of a wake.

Stories, songs, memories, tears — all played a part as the Simon Cowell-created, hit-making group’s latest tour stopped at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando. And while his body wasn’t physically present, as is typical at a real wake, the spirit of Carlos Marín loomed large over the show.

“Thank you for being here tonight in this difficult moment. We have no words to express our grief,” American David Miller said at the top of the show. “We are feeling very emotional so please bear with us.”

Carlos Marin of Il Divo, pictured performing in Doha, Qatar, in 2017 died in December.

Marín, a founding member of Il Divo nearly 20 years ago, died of COVID-19 in December at age 53. The quartet’s other three members decided to turn their already planned tour into a tribute to their friend. The result was a mix of eulogy and the trademark harmonies and soaring vocals of the classical-crossover group.

The three Il Divo singers — Miller, Sébastien Izambard of France and Urs Bühler of Switzerland — are joined on the tour by American baritone Steven LaBrie, who handled a delicate situation with grace and poise.

Musically, LaBrie has a warmth that adds body to the group’s sometimes sterile arrangements. His robust voice fits magnificently with the Il Divo signature blend. Once or twice, he even seemed to overpower the others in the sound mix.

Baritone Steven LaBrie is touring with Il Divo.

He deftly faded into the background when the others remembered their late friend, whose personality brought a cheeky flirtatiousness to the group. If the other three were the nice guys you’d take home to meet mom, Marín was the guy you wanted to hang with at the after-party.

He reveled in his showman role with Il Divo. After describing himself as a less-is-more kind of guy, Bühler said: “If you knew Carlos, you knew he was ‘more is more.'”

“He really could be over the top,” remarked Miller, pointing out that Marín traveled with a suitcase dedicated to his hair products.

Among the reminiscing, the group performed their hits and selections from their latest album, a tribute to Motown recorded with Marín. Il Divo and Motown are not an obvious combination, and the results are mixed.

A version of the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” felt stiff, though a peppy “My Girl” had a more pleasing bounce. “Tracks of My Tears” lost something without the simplicity of Smokey Robinson’s vocals, but “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” created a sonic wall of sound you could actually feel in your soul.

In the beginning: Il Divo in the early days with (from left) David Miller, Carlos Marín, Sébastien Izambard and Urs Bühler.

The familiar hits were given their due: “You Raise Me Up,” “Regresa a Mí (Unbreak My Heart)” and a particularly powerful “Adagio.”

And though there was banter among the guys — mainly at the expense of LaBrie’s youthfulness, compared to the others — thoughts of Marín were ever present. Miller choked up and bobbled his entrance on “Come What May (Te Amaré).” Izambard did the same on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” — the only song sung with Marín’s voice, recorded and represented by an empty stool.

The songs felt more overtly about Marín by the end of the show: Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” in grand style, a rather turgid “My Heart Will Go On.” For encores: An exhilarating “Somewhere” from “West Side Story” and the group’s traditional closer, “Time to Say Goodbye.”

A little showy, a little over the top. Marín would have loved it.

il divo tour 2022 reviews

Venue: Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater

City: St. Petersburg, FL

Dates: February 25, 2022

Review and Photographs by: Todd “Toddstar” Jolicoeur ( www.toddstarphotography.com )

With the world coming out of COVID related lockdowns and pandemic pauses in travel, gathering, and entertainment there are a lot of bands and performers getting out there and bringing their music to the masses.  Il Divo is no different as they started booking their 2022 tour and then the unspeakable happened.  It was announced in late December 2021 that original member Carlos Marin had passed away and fans worldwide wondered what was next for the remaining three members David Miller, Sébastien Izambard, and Urs Bühler.  There was only one thing they could do.  That was to honor the dates they had booked, but more importantly, honor the memory and legacy of Carlos with a Greatest Hits tour that would showcase the bands catalog.  Honor Marin they did as they kicked off the tour in St. Petersburg, FL at Mahaffey Theater.  Once the trio hit the stage, they broke into song with a cover of The Jackson 5 classic “I’ll Be There” and it was one of the more emotional moments I have ever seen during a live performance as the three each took their turns singing verses and sharing the harmonies and choruses.  As the song worked through to its end, the three were emotionally shaken and shed tears, shared hugs, and just basked in the memory of Carlos.  Once the needed moment had passed, they addressed the elephant in the room and then approximately 9:01pm on a Friday night, performer Steven Labrie joined the trio on stage… not to replace Marin but to deliver the songs in four-parts as the band has delivered show after show since 2004.  While different in appearance, sound, and overall vibe, it was also similar and familiar.  The overall sadness of the loss of their friend and brother in music never quite left the stage, but it was obvious Miller, Izambard, and Bühler needed this evening and performance as much if not more than anyone else in the venue.  Their comfort with their guest vocalist and his contribution was evident from the moment he joined them on stage and through the first song or two with them.  What the future holds for these guys only time will tell, but for the moment they are doing what they do best, grieving the only way they know how, and sharing the process with each fan that eases back into a theater chair and joins then for an evening of hits.

il divo tour 2022 reviews

Il Divo performing their Greatest Hits – Honors Carlos Marin Tour 2022 at The Royal Concert Hall Nottingham on Friday 9th December 2022.

Images and Review by Kevin Cooper

Il Divo, the most successful classical crossover group ever were back in Nottingham on Friday night to resume their Greatest Hits Tour at the Royal Concert Hall. Originally scheduled for 2021 it was postponed when their stalwart band member, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin contracted Covid and lost his battle.

With the three remaining members, David Miller, Sebastien Izambard and Urs Buhler now touring to honour his memory and legacy, with not a seat to be had, that is exactly what they did.

When the three of them came on to the stage to deliver a very moving White Christmas, emotions were high. And when they were joined by Mexican American baritone, Steven LeBrie, whose huge baritone voice filled any gaps, Il Divo were back.

On stage there was an orchestra with lush strings and wind instruments, and electric guitars and percussion that added to the delight of their wonderful songs. And as their voices soared around the Hall on the likes of Come What May, Adagio and Rejoice, it was all a little raw and at times emotional.

The most moving moment saw the three of them sat on stools with a fourth one left empty whilst they sang with the recorded voice of Marin to Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, whilst the crowd remained respectfully silent.

There were also secular choices such as Panis Angelicus, Schubert’s Ave Maria and even The Lord’s Prayer, but it was the hits such as Nella Fantasia, the awesome You Raise Me Up and a rousing rendition of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You that had the crowd on their feet in appreciation.

And with a stage resplendent with Christmas trees, there had to be the odd carol and they did not disappoint. With the crowd singing along to the likes of When A Child Is Born, Silent Night and set closer O Come All Ye Faithful that saw snow falling, the evening had indeed been a fitting tribute to their late friend.

Concert review: Il Divo still has it, despite an awkward first half

SINGAPORE — Watching Il Divo’s concert on Monday was like watching a sports match. In the first half, the quartet bantered stiltedly, moved awkwardly and had negative chemistry. During the half-time break, we imagine they might have gotten a pep talk from a highly effective coach because when they came back out, they were a different team: They not only sounded and interacted better; they also looked better.

We applaud the effort, but Il Divo’s songs work best without the distracting dancers. Photo: Hype Records/Eddie Sung

il divo tour 2022 reviews

The three-hour concert, held at The Star Theatre, was the first stop in the Asian leg of Il Divo’s Amor & Pasion World Tour and featured songs from the group’s latest album of the same name. The classical-pop band consisting tenors David Miller and Urs Buhler, baritone Carlos Marin and pop singer Sebastien Izambard last performed in Singapore two years ago.

With a show named Amor & Pasion (Spanish for love and passion), it was a no-brainer that the boys would play up their Latin lover shtick to the point of parody. After all, Marin, who is Spanish and single, has been overdoing that for years and, even if he were tired of it, the audience didn’t seem to be.

After the quartet loosened up in the second half, they trotted out pickup lines such as “I had no idea that the angels could fly so low” and “If being sexy were a crime, you’d spend your life in prison”, accompanied by sniggering.

The concert was also touted as the first time Il Divo would be dancing as well as singing on stage. In our opinion, they should stick to singing. That’s not to say their tangos and hip thrusts were badly executed — just that their songs worked best when it was simply the four of them sitting on stools or standing together, enabling their soaring vocals to take centre stage.

While we realise that the band was trying to make the show different and interesting, it would still have worked better without the cluttered stage, the Latin dancers and the KTV-quality video montages. The audience showed more appreciation for pared-down numbers such as Hallelujah, Caruso and Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.

Yes, vocally, the four guys in Armani have still got it and there is no reason for them to draw attention away from their instruments.

Brainchild of Simon Cowell, Il Divo are an operatic vocal group formed of singers from Spain, Switzerland, France and the United States.

Following a growing appreciation of male voices in a classical style, SImon Cowell deeded to form a vocal group, to be signed to his record label, Syco Music. Following auditions, French pop singer Sébastien Izambard, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, American tenor David Miller and Swiss tenor Urs Bühler were chosen to form the band, recreating the style of The Three Tenors.

The band started recording for their first album in 2004, as their self-titled debut. Recorded in Sweden, the album featured renditions of Sinatra's "My Way" and toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart." The album was a huge success, becoming certified multi-platinum and reaching number one on 13 countries around the world, top five in 25 countries.

Their second album, "Ancora" was released in 2005, becoming a number one hit in the UK and Australia within a week. In the US it entered the Billboard Charts at number one, selling over 150,000 copies in a week. The album included a duet with Céline Dion, on "I Believe in You" and a Spanish version of Secret Garden's "You Raise Me Up."

Il Divo have consistently released albums since the success of their first two, including a christmas album. Their 2008 record "The Promise" again reached number one in several countries and 2011's "Wicked Game" broke the top 20 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the US.

In 2012, the band released a record of their greatest hits, before embarking on an international tour with Welsh star Katherine Jenkins.

Live reviews

Classical music has seen somewhat of a mainstream crossover in recent years, which some would attribute to Simon Cowell and his love of showcasing the genre on his TV talent shows, providing platforms for artists such as Paul Potts.

One of Cowell's most prized classical possessions though did not come from one of these shows, but rather he put together to fill this new gap in the classical/mainstream crossover market. Enter, Il Divo. four rather handsome men from across the globe, with voices that blend together unbelievably smooth.

Cowell apparently spent a lot of time researching classical singers from across the world when looking for members of Il Divo. And despite only being together for the past decade or so, Sebastien, Carlos, David & Urs perform like they've been together for a lifetime.

Regulars in the touring game, I've had the chance to see Il Divo live a few times, with the most memorable performance being at the Royal Albert Hall back in 2012. Hearing the incredibly powerful vocals of this group within such an iconic venue, with some of the best acoustics on offer, was an experience that I will never forget.

Il Divo have changed people's perceptions of classical music as something that only the upper classes are knowledgeable of and enjoy, and their success in doing so is evidenced by worldwide album sales of 26 million.

Like him or loathe him, Simon Cowell has created a gem with Il Divo, who filled a gap in the market so well. I for one have already booked tickets to see them later this year at The o2 Arena in London and it is sure to be another unforgettable experience.

It was the lovely enjoyable concert and the humor was not forgotten when Carlos was on state. However, there were few points that the organizers should take in concern: I arrived with taxi and the only entrance that did have somekind of signing was the Crown area. There were security personal on the way but non did not know where was the entrance for Red area? Since the security said that yep here...my taxi stop the meter and I paid. Then the another security personal said NO. Taxi was still there but it cost extra 12 AED to go another gate (no signs). Finally I made it in to Red area and went to byu food. The platter for two (sushi etc) was really dry and the seagrass around them too old and almost too hard to eat. Other than this it was a good idea to get them ready and have a quick service. After the meal I was looking for a place for the cigarette. There was no place with asthrey and the waitress told that you can smoke anywhere? There should have been dedicated area for smokers! The concert started and Il Divo group made all better except the sound system was terrible time to time. I came to hear singing not the drums... Those microphones were not set up since they voice were not balanced at the beginning. At the end I I can still say that Il Divo made my evening and the fabulous choice of songs left everyone in good mood. I would have loved to byu the after party ticket from the spot but it was not possible? I am sure it was not so full and at the end business is business and ticket sale is the sale even it is created at the spot.

Gracias!! :)

I have been Il Divo fan since 2003. I went to 13 concerts in UK but also in Belgium and two in Paris few years ago. I cannot imagine my live without their music. For me, they are the most wonderful singers with unbelievable talent and charisma. I went to Meet & Greet few years ago as a special treat for my birthday. I adore Il Divo and I am so pleased for them and their worldwide success. Yesterdays, Timeless Tour concert in Cardiff was electrifying, with great involvement of the audience, standing ovation, a very memorable evening. The new repertoire of songs they have chosen are onr of my favourite songs. I loved every minute of this concert. They give absolutely 100 percent at every concert I have been too. Long live IL Divo. I love you Guys.

I saw Il Divo at the Rosemont Theater on October 22. They were great, amazing, specially when Sebastien sung in French, since I am French. I was hoping to connect with him, but was not seated at the right place. All of the songs I knew them.

The only thing that I didn't care for were the dancers. I would have liked better if Il Divo were performing alone. It sorts took them away from their performance.

It seemed the attention was more towards the dancers. After having said all that I still love them, I think they are great singers and would not mind seeing them again in the near future if they return to Chicago.

Not the greatest event. Only about a third of tickets sold and organisers did not adjust by moving those who were there closer to the stage. Consequently no real atmosphere. More a venue issue than a performer issue.

Performance was OK in view of the lack of atmosphere however the group seemed to cut down the second half of the show in response to this.

Lot of money to pay for a c90 minute performance

Next to Andrea Bocelli, the greatest concert and show yet. Can't wait to see them again. Saw them 2 years ago in the same venue--They all get better with age especially David and Sebastian. Urs voice is absolutely fabulous. Carlos' voice is so strong and powerful, too.

International classical crossover group Il Divo will bring their “ Greatest Hits Tour ” to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando on February 26, 2022.

The tour, previously the “For Once in My Life Tour,” is going on as a “Greatest Hits Tour” following the tragic passing of Il Divo’s Spanish baritone Carlos Marin last December.

America’s David Miller, France’s Sebastien Izambard, and Switzerland’s Urs Buhler will be joined on the tour by special guest, Mexican-American baritone Steven LaBrie.

“Carlos was a larger than life personality, with a rare combination of an incredibly beautiful, Godgiven voice and absolutely, immense talent. His passion, playfulness and sense of humor made for such a magical persona, and his laugh would always lift anyone up. He was loved by millions of fans all over the world and we were lucky and honored to be able to perform with him in our midst for so many years. We’ll deeply miss his playfulness, friendship and brilliant voice. In his honor, we’ll be setting up a Carlos Marin Foundation and will be playing tribute to his singing in our future shows. May everyone remember him for his beautiful soul, his amazing talent, and may he forever rest in peace,” said Miller, Izambard and Buhle in a statement.

The tour supports their 10th studio album, “For Once In My Life: A Celebration Of Motown,” and will also be filled with Il Divo’s hits from their vast catalog of songs.

DECEMBER 20th 2021: Carlos Marin, Il Divo singer, has died at the age of 53. He was born on October 13, 1968 in Russelsheim, Germany and died on December 19, 2021 in Manchester, England, United Kingdom reportedly due to complications from COVID-19. - File Photo by: zz/DP/AAD/STAR MAX/IPx 2015 7/3/15 David Miller, Sebastien Izambard, Carlos Marin and Urs Buhler of Il Divo at the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards held on July 3, 2015 in London, England, UK.

The multinational vocal quartet Il Divo has announced that its U.S. tour will go on as scheduled beginning Feb. 2, despite the Dec. 19 death of member Carlos Marin . Mexican American baritone Steven LaBrie has been drafted to join the surviving members for the tour, which has been rechristened as a “Greatest Hits” trek and will now be dedicated to Marin’s memory.

The tour had previously been billed as the “For Once in My Life Tour” before being refocused as a career retrospective and tribute to Marin in the wake of his death from COVID-19 just before Christmas.

Members David Miller, Sebastien Izambard and Urs Buhler released a statement about going on with the show, saying: “Carlos was a larger than life personality, with a rare combination of an incredibly beautiful, God-given voice and absolutely immense talent. His passion, playfulness and sense of humor made for such a magical persona, and his laugh would always lift anyone up. He was loved by millions of fans all over the world and we were lucky and honored to be able to perform with him in our midst for so many years. May everyone remember him for his beautiful soul, his amazing talent and may he forever rest in peace.”

The tour begins as previously scheduled Feb. 2 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, quickly followed by a date in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theatre Feb. 6. The 11-date outing wraps up in Miami Feb. 27.

Marin was 53 when he died. After feeling ill while on tour in the U.K., the singer had been hospitalized on Dec. 8 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Manchester Royal Hospital and reportedly had to be intubated before passing away 11 days later.

Il Divo was formed in 2003 by Simon Cowell for his Sony Music Synco Label as a new generation, Three Tenors-style quartet delivering covers of songs halfway between opera and pop. Immaculately turned out in largely Giorgio Armani suits, the group’s singers came from over the world: Bühler was a Swiss tenor, Marín a Germany-born Spaniard, Miller an American tenor and Izambard a French pop singer.

Marin’s ex-wife, Geraldine Larrosa, told a Spanish outlet that Cowell had “personally phoned the hospital and offered to help with anything,” including the offer of moving him to a Spanish hospital. She also said they had been planning to remarry. “During these two years of the pandemic, we’d been together. We were going to marry and it did not happen in the end,” she said. A funeral service was held Dec. 28 in Madrid.

The tour’s newly named guest vocalist, LaBrie, was named artist of the week by Opera Wire in December 2019. The publication noted at that time that LaBrie had had “breakouts with the New Amsterdam Opera and Teatro Nuovo and made major role debuts as well as house debuts with some of the United States’ major regional theaters including the San Diego Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Florida Grand Opera” on his road toward an impending European debut at the the Tiroler Festspiele Erl.

A Musical Extravaganza to Usher in the Holidays

As the chill of winter settles in, IL DIVO’s “A New Day Holiday Tour” promises to be a spectacular musical journey, radiating warmth and joy through the harmonious blend of their mesmerizing voices. From cherished holiday favorites like “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” and “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” to the heartwarming rendition of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” the quartet is set to create an enchanting atmosphere that captures the true essence of the festive season. The tour is scheduled to continue its spellbinding journey until December 23 in Naples, Florida, with additional dates yet to be announced.

A New Voice: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

In a poignant moment for IL DIVO and their devoted fans, the group announces a new addition to their lineup, Mexican American baritone Steven LaBrie . Following the untimely passing of original member Carlos Marin in 2021 due to COVID-19, LaBrie was a featured guest during the group’s “Greatest Hits Tour” from 2022 onwards.

With his seamless integration into the quartet, IL DIVO now welcomes him as a full-fledged member. LaBrie’s rich and resonant baritone voice adds a new dimension to IL DIVO’s harmonies, honoring Marin’s legacy while embarking on a new chapter in the group’s illustrious history.

A Trailblazing Journey in Music

IL DIVO has had an impressive rise to fame since its formation in 2004. The quartet, made up of Urs Bühler (tenor) from Switzerland, Sébastien Izambard (tenor) from France, David Miller (tenor) from the United States, and Steven LaBrie (baritone), has redefined the classical crossover genre. Their music seamlessly transitions between languages, including English, Spanish, and Italian, and this has helped them to reach a global audience and overcome cultural barriers.

Il Divo: Greatest Hits Tour - Miami, FL

“Il Divo is this beautiful tapestry of different colors, so finding a replacement for Carlos seemed like an impossible task. Steven was up to the challenge, though. He sent us a recording, and we were blown away. It’s a bit serendipitous. He was literally the exact same age we were when we started this 20 years ago,” David says. “On opening night of any tour, we always had a ritual where we would shake hands and say, ‘Good luck. Here we go.’ During the first night of ‘Greatest Hits Tour’ we started shaking hands out of habit, and Carlos wasn’t there. We finally let ourselves feel the emotion of loss. However, the tour was incredible.”

Adding, “We thought about the experience we were having with audiences and this communion of feeling, and of being human. We realized it could be a real turning point. It was a shot in the arm, and it felt like there was more to be discovered for Il Divo.”

IL DIVO

Their discography is diverse, featuring languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Latin, English, and Japanese. As a result, they have sold over 30 million albums worldwide, an achievement that includes an impressive 50 No. 1 hits and 160 Gold and Platinum records across 35 countries. One of their most groundbreaking achievements was debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, making them the first Classical Crossover artist to do so.

Beyond Music: A Cultural Phenomenon

IL DIVO has had a profound impact that goes beyond just their music. Their performances have resonated through legendary venues and stadiums, adding to the atmosphere of significant events like the Summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Diamond Jubilee at Windsor, and even the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball. Their talent has made a lasting impression on the cultural world, and their diverse collection of songs still touches young and old hearts.

With the beginning of their “A New Day Holiday Tour,” IL DIVO welcomes their fans to a one-of-a-kind experience that will stay with them forever. This tour is more than just a concert; it’s a tribute to the unyielding power of harmony, the growth of a rich musical heritage, and music’s ability to bring people closer, regardless of time and distance.

Il Divo is Italian for “divine male performer,” though I can think of a few other choice words in Italian to describe Il Divo, the studmuffin operatic quartet created by onetime American Idol judge Simon Cowell a decade ago following a massive two-year global search for – let’s be frank – the new Three Tenors, except oozing with sex appeal.

So when French pop singer Sébastien Izambard (the only one who looks like he can dance), Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, American tenor David Miller (Mr. Personality), and Swiss tenor Urs Bühler hit the stage at the Bell Centre last night, the very loud and mostly female 7,500 fans in attendance got their groove back. Carlos Marín – the only member of the group who is still single – kept reminding the women audience members of that fact. At one point Marín playfully said, “Behind every great man there is a woman. The boys spoke mostly French throughout their concert, though Swiss tenor Urs Bühler actually admitted onstage he is unable to decipher or understand Quebec French. That was probably as impromptu as it got in a clearly tightly-scripted and choreographed two-hour, 21-song show that featured many of their Italian operatic pop hits.

But the boys and their 20-plus orchestra also did pretty darn good versions of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, Somewhere, Melanconia (the Italian version of Chris Isaacs haunting Wicked Games ), and got much-deserved standing ovations for Don’t Cry For Me Argentina , Roy Orbison’s Crying and Celine Dion’s Pour que tu m’aimes encore . They came back for one encore, Time to Say Goodbye (otherwise known as Con te partirò , Andre Bocelli’s signature song with English soprano Sarah Brightman).

It was also interesting to see Il Divo headline an arena in the very city where the late Luciano Pavarotti first got the idea to create The Three Tenors and tour arenas following the massive success of his first-ever arena show, at the Montreal Forum in 1982. That move from opera houses to arenas laid the groundwork for “bands” like Il Divo, who today are prepped and marketed like the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block.

Except the singers in Il Divo know it, don’t take themselves too seriously and make sure they hit every note without the help of an auto-tuner.

Opening for Il Divo was 18-year-old Montreal singer Nikki Yanofsky who can pretty much sing with the best of them. The girl is still learning the ropes, and I can only imagine how she will command her voice and the stage once she’s lived a bit. But she worked the audience hard, got a standing ovation for her Canadian Number One single I Believe and left the stage jubilant.
