When the Hunter family depart from their Canadian town for a summer in England, they leave their pets--Bodger (an elderly bull terrier), Luath (a yellow Labrador retriever), and Tao (a Siamese cat)--with their friend John Longridge, who lives in Ontario 250 miles away. Toward the end of the summer, John goes off on a hunting trip, and the three homesick animals set out to find their way back to the Hunter house. During their journey across some of Canada's wildest terrain, the three participate in numerous adventures. There are an encounter with a lynx, a battle with a vicious farm dog, and a scuffle with a bear. Tao, a natural hunter, brings Bodger food after he collapses from weakness. The dogs become separated from Tao when he falls into a river and nearly drowns, but they are reunited after the cat has been rescued and nursed back to health by a little Finnish girl. Luath has a painful encounter with a porcupine, but his wounds are treated by a kindly farmer. Along the way an old hermit entertains the trio as his guests. Upon returning from England, the Hunters are informed of the disappearance of their pets. A short time later a somewhat unhappy birthday party in the Hunter garden is turned into a homecoming celebration as the three pets emerge from the woods behind the house and rush to join the family for a happy reunion.

Parents need to know that The Incredible Journey is a heartwarming, 1963 Disney live-action movie -- based on Sheila Burnford's novel -- with positive messages around friendship and perseverance. Positive Messages

Friendship, teamwork, perseverance, and courage are strong themes. The relationship between the cat and dogs -- despite being different animals and breeds -- has positive messages of inclusiveness and empathy. The kindness of strangers. The love and bond between pets and their owners.

Positive Role Models

The three animals all look out for each other, helping each other when they are in need. The family who the animals belong to have plenty of love and affection for them. Most of the other humans they come into contact with are kind and generous. But some take a dislike to them and aggressively chase them away.

Violence & Scariness

Some animals are shot at with guns -- although none of them are hit, it is enough to scare the animals away. A duck hunt sees a duck being shot dead in the sky and a dog retrieve it. There are some aggressive scenes between animals. A cat hisses and claws at a bear when protecting a dog. The cat is later chased by a lynx before a gunshot scares the big cat away. Spoiler alert: A cat falls into a river and is washed away, presumably to its death -- it later emerges that it has survived. The animals constantly face the threat of starvation. In an effort to find some food, a cat catches a fish and a dog catches a rabbit -- the latter is seen lifeless between the dog's jaws. After trying to catch a porcupine, a dog ends up with the porcupine's spikes in its face, causing much distress.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Toward the end of the movie, a character is seen smoking a pipe and another a cigarette. Another character is seen rolling up a cigarette.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that The Incredible Journey is a heartwarming, 1963 Disney live-action movie -- based on Sheila Burnford's novel -- with positive messages around friendship and perseverance. It was later remade in 1993 as Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey . The movie centers around a cat and two dogs as they travel across the Canadian wilderness in search of home. As opposed to the 1993 remake, the animals are non-speaking, but they do encounter humans along the way, and there is a touching narration throughout. There are some moments of peril that may trouble younger viewers -- with the trio facing the constant threat of starvation and other animals. Spoiler alert: In the movie's most distressing scene, Tao, a Siamese cat, is swept into a river and is presumed dead -- but he later emerges alive. Animals are shot at but never hit, apart from a duck hunting scene in which a duck is shot dead from the sky. Some aggression is seen between different animals including when a bear tries to attack Bodger, an English bull terrier, and a lynx chases Tao. Luath, a Labrador retriever, ends up with porcupine spikes in his face, causing him much distress. There is some smoking toward the end of the movie, befitting the time period. What's the Story?

THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY tells the remarkable story of three pets -- a cat and two dogs -- as they try to find their way home across the Canadian wilderness. While traveling the hundreds of miles, the trio encounter kind -- and not so kind -- strangers, a protective bear, an aggressive lynx, and a spiky porcupine. Can they defy the odds and make it back to the family that loves them?

Is It Any Good?

Made in 1963, this heartfelt Disney movie remains a joyous celebration of friendship and courage played through the eyes of a cat and two dogs. This is a movie that transports you to a more innocent time, championing the importance of friendship and looking out for one another. With CGI a decade away from first being seen in a movie, The Incredible Journey is impressively choreographed. The action among the animals often resembles a nature documentary rather than a family movie.

Comparisons will naturally be made to 1993's Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey , which opted to give voices to its furry stars. But by relying on just the natural behavior of the animals, the original arguably sucks you in more than the remake. Some of the acting of the human characters is at times wooden and jars the natural flow of the animal's adventure. But Rex Allen 's narration is a soothing accompaniment to a feel-good movie, as told through a Siamese cat, an English bull terrier, and a Labrador retriever.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the friendships depicted in The Incredible Journey . What examples can you give of Tao, Bodger, and Luath helping each other? The trio are all different species and breeds, with different personalities, but this doesn't impact their friendship. Why do you think that is? How do your relationships with your friends compare?

Courage , perseverance , and teamwork all play a huge part in the movie. Why are these such important character strengths?

Did any of the scenes upset you? If so, which ones?

Why are pets so important to us? What can they teach us about life?

How did this movie compare to the 1993 remake, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey ? Which did you prefer and why?

The Hunter family receive a telegram detailing that the father, James, has been offered a visiting fellowship at Oxford University in England. However, their two children, Peter and Elizabeth worry about what is to be done with their two dogs, Luath the young Labrador Retriever and Bodger the elderly English Bull Terrier, along with their Siamese cat Tao, while they are away. Family friend John Longridge offers to have the animals stay with him, so that is what is arranged.

After a few days of having the animals in his care John leaves for the opening day of duck hunting season; he leaves his housekeeper, Mrs. Oakes and her husband, Bert to look after his house and the animals during his absence. Soon after John drives away, Luath hears the calls of wild geese overhead, returning home. This makes him want to do the same, so he starts off down the road, and Tao and Bodger soon follow after him. Later, Mrs. Oakes arrives at John's house expecting to see the animals, but can't find them. Then she finds half of a note that John had written that appears to imply that he took the animals with him on the trip (however, the other half of it was accidentally knocked into the fireplace by the cat, but Mrs. Oakes doesn't realize this).

Now well on their way home, the animals stop at a river to have a drink, but have to hide from a passing truck in case they are recognized. After that, they continue on. By the next morning, old Bodger is very tired and is beginning to slow down, so the animals stop for a rest in a clearing and wait for Bodger to regain his strength. Tao goes off into the brush to hunt a partridge while the old dog rests. Soon, two bear cubs happen upon Bodger and investigate him, but then their mother arrives on the scene. The mother bear thinks Bodger has been hurting her cubs and attacks him; the cat witnesses this and in turn attacks her in trying to protect his friend. However, Tao eventually backs up, frightened. Finally, Luath sees the bear and starts barking furiously; this, combined with the yowling, spitting cat, is enough to cause the mother bear to back down and run away.

After a whole week of traveling, the animals adapt to traveling after dark so that there is less chance of someone seeing them. They cut through an old saw mill, but are shot at after Bodger, rather foolishly, steals an old bone from a cookhouse's rubbish bin. They escape unharmed, although Bodger's dignity is given a serious blow. After ten days, while Bodger is resting, he hears the singing of a hermit, named Jeremy.

The eccentric old man takes the animals to his hut, where he makes a stew for them to eat. The dogs don't really take to the stew and Tao is more interested in stalking Jeremy's pet crow, but they don't show that they aren't interested. After a while they decide to leave and continue their journey. Many miles along, the animals come to a wide river, which they realize they have no choice but to cross. Luath and Bodger make it across easily, but Tao prefers not to get wet so he finds a dam to cross. However, when he reaches a large gap, he tries to jump over it but falls into the water. Luath tries to rescue him, but is too slow to keep up and loses him.

After trying to console one another, Bodger and Luath decide to press on without their friend. However, many miles downriver, a young girl named Helvi discovers Tao, soaking wet, barely alive, and half-starved, by the side of the water. She and her parents proceed to take Tao into their care and nurse him back to health over a number of days. One night, after recovering fully, the cat decides to leave the family and get back to the dogs.

Tao takes his time in traveling, now that he is alone. But, as he journeys deeper into the forest he discovers that he is being quietly stalked by a hungry lynx. The lynx attacks Tao and chases him up a tree, but he escapes. Then, the lynx corners Tao in a log, but is driven off by the arrival of a young boy with a rifle, allowing the cat to press on.

Not long after that, Luath and Bodger hear Tao calling. They immediately recognize their friend and the threesome are joyfully reunited. Together once again, the animals set off in search of food. Luath spies a porcupine, but gets too close to it, leaving him with quills stuck in his muzzle. Soon, while soothing his pain at a river, Luath meets hunter James MacKenzie, who takes pity on the young Labrador and brings him back to his house for treatment. When he arrives, he discovers that his wife Nell has found Bodger. The cat hides on a wood pile outside the house, watching and waiting and unnoticed by James or Nell. James removes the quills from Luath's muzzle (despite initially being on the receiving end of Bodger's protective instincts over the young dog) and that night, he locks the dogs in his barn, planning to ask around and find out who they belong to. Tao then rejoins his friends.

Meanwhile, John arrives home and it is discovered that the animals have disappeared. After some initial confusion as to why, the humans deduce that Luath has taken them home. John telephones the various ranger stations around the Ironmouth Range area, but they all say they will get in touch with him the following day. Later, the Hunters arrive home; John lets them know what's happened and Peter is quick to realize that an older dog such as Bodger most likely wouldn't have the strength to complete a journey so long, but Elizabeth remains firmly convinced that Tao will, sooner or later, return home. The animals, meanwhile, escape from the barn and the humans realize where they are and that they have only 40 miles left to go; this leads the humans to believe that if they've managed to get this far, they just may be able to make it all the way home.

On Peter's birthday soon afterwards, John gets Peter a registration paper from the Kenmore kennel, who are holding another Bull Terrier puppy in his name. All of a sudden, Elizabeth hears a dog barking in the distance and becomes immediately convinced that it must be Luath. Despite initial reservations, James whistles to the dog to see if Elizabeth is right; moments later they see Luath charging across the heathland ahead and barking, overjoyed to have finally returned home. A few seconds afterwards, Tao follows on and also arrives home safely.

Sadly, Peter is convinced that Bodger wasn't able to make the journey because he was too old, but is happy to see Tao and Luath again. Just then, Peter suddenly spots a white shape on the horizon, which he soon realizes is, in fact, Bodger, coming as quickly as he possibly can. The boy and the old dog are ecstatic to be reunited once again. The cat and Labrador join Bodger and Peter in their frolicking and all is well as the three very brave animals finally complete their incredible journey.

In 1993 , Disney made a new version of the film, entitled Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey . Featuring the voices of Don Ameche, Sally Field , and Michael J. Fox , the film keeps the same basic story line, but adds a subplot in which the kids are dealing with a new step-family. All three pets are renamed, the original breeds are switched, the Bull Terrier is replaced with an American Bulldog, the gender of the cat switched, and the ages of the original Labrador and Bull Terrier are switched. It also has vocalizations of the animals' thoughts and communications with each other.

10 incredible bad boys scenes from all 3 movies that set the bar very high for bad boys 4.

Bad Boys was full of incredible action sequences and laugh-out-loud moments that set the bar very high for the fourth movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

  • Bad Boys franchise known for epic action and hilarious comedy, set bar high for upcoming fourth installment, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
  • Director Michael Bay's influence seen in explosive action sequences, memorable comedic moments in Bad Boys movies.
  • Emotional depth added in Bad Boys for Life showdown between Mike and his estranged son adds new layer to action-packed series.

The Bad Boys franchise has entertained audiences with three movies over the past 25 years, meaning that the upcoming fourth installment, Bad Boys: Ride or Die , has a long legacy to live to. As a hilarious buddy cop action-comedy series, Bad Boys starred Martin Lawrence and Will Smith as mismatched detectives who repeatedly went above and beyond in their pursuit of drug kingpins, crazed killers, and international crime syndicates. With plenty of over-the-top action and hilarious comedy, the three Bad Boys movies have set the bar very for itself high moving forward.

The first two Bad Boys movies were directed by action director Michael Bay , who imbued the franchise with his signature love for epic set pieces, massive explosions, and thrilling action sequences. Adding to this was the incredible comedic skill of Lawrence, Smith, and the entire supporting cast, who had so many memorable moments over the past three movies. Bad Boys: Ride or Die has a lot to live up to , but paying tribute to the epic scenes of the past while forging something new will hopefully lead to another thrilling addition to this action franchise.

10 The Mansion Attack

Bad boys ii (2003).

One certainty in Michael Bay movies was massive explosions, and the mansion demolition scene set the bar incredibly high for the upcoming fourth installment in the franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die . While Bay only directed the first two films, his legacy and fondness for over-the-top cinematic spectacles have continued to influence the series moving forward and will surely be repeated in the franchise’s latest entry. With bodies flying through the air, vehicles driving through walls, and a mansion engulfed in flames, this attack in Bad Boys II was one of the most epic in the entire series .

Taking place in Cuba after Marcus and Mike led a team of Special Forces officers on a mission to infiltrate the drug kingpin Tapia’s mansion, this gigantic detonation shattered windows all around and left the property in complete ruin. While the Bad Boys series had always featured incredible action sequences , this massive set-piece explosion was a genuinely stunning piece of filmmaking. While Bay has gotten plenty of criticism over the years for his overreliance on sequences such as this, the mansion explosion in Bad Boys II showcased his signiture style at its best.

9 The Hanger Shootout

Bad boys (1999), bad boys (1995).

While the Bad Boys franchise continued to become more over-the-top and outrageous as it went, it was hard to beat the climactic airport hanger shootout scene from the original movie. As the culmination of Marcus and Mike’s journey to track down stolen drugs and apprehend the drug kingpin Fouchet and his henchmen, this final shootout felt both earned and epic. With plenty of bloodshed, gunfire, and a fiery explosion, scenes like this made Bad Boys a success at the box office, where it grossed $114.4 million against its $19 million budget (via Box Office Mojo .)

The already intense shootout became even more fierce after the protected witness, Julie Mott, drove into flammable barrels and set the entire hanger ablaze while the henchmen continued to shoot, surrounded by flames. With everybody’s life on the line, this Bad Boys shootout felt urgent as the flames started to burn the crooks' money, and escape appeared impossible. It was a miracle that Marcus and Mike even made it out of the situation alive, and it will be even more impressive if Bad Boys: Ride or Die can top this astounding sequence.

8 Mike’s Showdown With Armando

Bad boys for life (2020), bad boys for life.

Not available

In Bad Boys For Life, the third installment in the Bad Boys film franchise,  Marcus Burnett wants to retire, but when Mike Lowrey is shot, and the assailant goes after a friend of Burnett's, the two team up together for one last ride.

The Bad Boys franchise has often valued action and spectacle over emotion and nuance, but the showdown between Mike Lowry and his estranged son, Armando Aretas, gave Bad Boys for Life some real emotional resonance. While Mike did not realize he had a son through Bad Boys for Life , he slowly put the pieces together and discovered that one of the criminals they were trying to take down was, in fact, his own flesh and blood from an affair he had while deep undercover decades before. This realization added an extra layer of depth to the final showdown between Mike and Armando.

After having already vowed to kill Armando, Mike was struggling with feeling like he had failed his son while also doing his job and upholding his duty to apprehend lawbreakers. With both characters embroiled in what could have been a fight to the death, Mike revealed the truth, showcasing some love and affection for his long-lost son. This powerful scene will be hard to top in Bad Boys: Ride or Die , but, as the closing moments of Bad Boys for Life revealed Mike and Armando may start working together, there’ll likely be many opportunities for more father-son bonding.

7 The Wedding Speech

While many viewers were disappointed that director Michael Bay did not return to helm the third movie in the Bad Boys franchise, one scene in Bad Boys for Life more than made up for it. With plenty of moments that would please lovers of the Bad Boys series, the wedding speech scene will be hard to top when honoring the franchise's legacy in Bad Boys: Ride or Die . This emotional scene featured a cameo appearance from Bay himself and proved he had given his blessing to the series, which continued without him in the director’s chair.

This brief appearance from Bay felt like a passing of the torch.

The wedding speech scene already featured an incredible moment of fan service as it depicted Marcus's daughter getting married to Reggie, who was last seen being interrogated by Marcus and Mike in Bad Boys II . Then, in a surprise appearance, Bay introduced Mike, who was giving a toast to the newly married couple. This brief appearance from Bay felt like a passing of the torch and will be a tough moment to top in the fourth movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die .

6 The Liquor Store

Part of the long-lasting appeal of the Bad Boys franchise was how consistently funny it was, and plenty of its most hilarious moments, such as the liquor holdup scene, came from the very first movie. This took place as Marcus, Mike, and their witness, Julie, were discussing the drug deal gone wrong while a nervous store clerk overheard them and mistook them for criminals. While Marcus and Mike discussed the increasingly shocking crime, the shop assistant spotted the guns in their pockets and thought he had to act before he became the victim of a robbery.

The over-and-back between Mike, Marcus, and the store clerk was truly hilarious, as he threatened their lives and did not believe that they were police officers. The double meaning of the store clerk’s threats made his intimidation tactic even funnier, as he was quickly outwitted by the crime-fighting duo as Mike pulled his gun on him and demanded a “ pack of tropical fruit Bubbilicous .” While the later installments of the Bad Boys series had more exciting moments, it will be hard for Bad Boys: Ride or Die to top smaller, fun moments such as this.

5 Shooting Hoops With Captain Howard

The wise-cracking Captain Conrad Howard was known for his intense outbursts throughout the Bad Boys franchise , as he was consistently left to face the consequences of Marcus and Mike’s reckless behavior. Captain Howard has countless incredible moments, but his greatest appearance came when playing basketball in the original Bad Boys movie. With a cigar in his mouth and questionable sports skills, Captain Howard tore the boys a new one and demanded they continued to keep up their ruse of swapping identities toward their essential witness.

This basketball scene highlighted everything great about Captain Howard, as his no-nonsense attitude was just the thing needed to keep Marcus and Mike on the case and never falter in their plan. Captain Howard was always quick with a funny one-liner and continued to appear in every subsequent movie before dying in Bad Boys for Life . However, despite his death, Bad Boys 4 is bringing Captain Howard back , so there’s still time to top this incredible scene in the latest installment.

4 “We Fly Together, We Die Together”

The funniest moments in the Bad Boys series often came from ordinary people unwittingly being exposed to Marcus and Mike’s absurd existence.

The funniest moments in the Bad Boys series often came from ordinary people unwittingly being exposed to Marcus and Mike’s absurd existence, which was definitely the case of the airplane scene in Bad Boys for Life . From one row behind him, Marcus loudly spoke to Mike about the dangers of his mission and that he would always be there for backup, stating, to the shock of everyone around him, “ We fly together, we die together .” This hilarious scene had the other passengers afraid for their lives, which became even more sinister when Mike talked about his plans to kill his own son.

The scene’s tension continued to rise to increasingly bizarre levels, but Marcus and Mike did not show any concern for how shocking their conversations were or how much they would raise the suspicion of everybody around them. As an incredibly well-written scene, this interaction proved how great the dialogue in Bad Boys can be , and it did not always need to rely on intense action sequences. While it will be hard for Bad Boys: Ride or Die to top scenes like this, hopefully, there will be plenty more comedic over-and-back moments between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

3 The Highway Chase

Bad Boys was always at its best when Marcus and Mike were stuck right bang in the middle of an intense action sequence, and it was never as intense as the highway chase scene from Bad Boys II . This saw the two partners driving an insanely high speed down the highway as they pursued the Cuban drug cartel that had been smuggling ecstasy into the United States. As Mike seamlessly swerved through ongoing traffic, Marcus was freaking out in the passenger seat, and the scene managed to be incredibly suspenseful, thrilling, and hilarious at the same time.

Director Michael Bay’s eye for action was on full display as the gang shot at the police officers from out of their vehicles , cars literally flipped through the air, and Mike bickered with Marcus about how they would de-escalate the situation. With fast trucks and flaming cars, chaotic scenes like this made the Bad Boys series so popular in the first place. While this scene sets the bar incredibly high for future movies, if Bad Boys: Ride or Die can challenge this same type of energy, it will surely be a cinematic spectacle to remember.

2 Marcus And Julie At Mike’s Apartment

The first Bad Boys had so many hilarious moments that involved Marcus Burnett being forced to impersonate his partner, Mike Lowry, to gain the trust of the witness, Julie Mott. While Marcus managed to play it relatively cool initially, after he took Julie to Mike’s apartment, getting away with his new persona became increasingly complex, and his lies became more obvious. From not knowing where anything was in the apartment to having pictures of the real Mike all over the place, watching Marcus quickly come up with explanations was truly hilarious.

At first, Julie thought that Marcus was in a relationship with the real Mike and could immediately tell there was something strange about his behavior. The scene where the two initially arrive at Mike’s apartment was one of the funniest moments in the entire Bad Boys franchise, and Martin Lawrence played it with perfect comedic timing. The hilarious miscommunication between Marcus and Julie was central to the story of Bad Boys , and clever moments like this set the bar so high for Bad Boys: Ride or Die .

1 Interrogating Reggie

For a teenage boy, there was nothing more daunting than meeting a girlfriend’s father, and it would be even more nerve-wracking if her dad were Detective Marcus Burnett from Bad Boys II . That’s why the scene with Reggie, Marcus’s daughter's new boyfriend, was the funniest moment in the trilogy and set the bar insanely high for the upcoming movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die . As Marcus and his partner Mike took on new personas to interrogate the frightened teenager , Martin Lawrence and Will Smith delivered some of their funniest lines to a terrified Reggie.

From searching Reggie for drugs, telling him he was “ at least 30," and pointing a gun directly in his face, this was the biggest laugh-out-loud moment from across all three Bad Boys movies. While the performances of Lawrence and Smith must be commended, the star of the scene was Dennis Greene as Reggie. Greene even reprised his role in Bad Boys for Life , so there’s a chance that these three characters' hilarity can be repeated in Bad Boys 4 .

The Biggest Budget Indie Movie Ever Made Still Bombed at the Box Office

The City of a Thousand Bombs.

The Big Picture

  • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the most expensive indie movie ever made.
  • The film, while visually stunning, rehashes familiar space opera tropes and lacks chemistry.
  • Despite being a box office failure, the movie showcases the value of creative freedom in filmmaking.

Usually, when you think of independent movies, you don't think of supermassive productions that are looking to be the next big blockbuster and rake in boatloads of cash. That being said, that's what the biggest indie movie of all time was trying to be. The film in question is 2017's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets , aka the most expensive independent movie ever made . Just watching it, you never would have thought that this movie was made outside of a big studio. Unfortunately, it didn't end up becoming the blockbuster that it set out to be , nor did it garner the following that its filmmakers probably hoped for. That being said, it's still an incredible achievement in what a group of artists can do outside the typical Hollywood system and should be praised for its mind-blowing efforts alone.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

A dark force threatens Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets. Special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets' Is the Most Expensive Indie Movie Ever Made

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a 2017 science fiction epic, and a space opera that is based on the classic French comics of the 20th century, Valérian and Laureline . While it is adapted from the comic book medium , don't expect a Marvel-type movie, heroes with a big "S" emblazoned across their chest, or anything of the sort. No, this Luc Besson -directed saga had its eyes set on being the next Star Wars .

The story of Valerian follows Alpha, a sprawling society that more than a thousand species call home, and the journey of Valerian and Laureline ( Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne ) as they set out to save their home from an oncoming mysterious threat. Amidst the typical hero's journey of it all, Valerian showcases vast, imaginative, and beautifully rendered worlds and creatures, gobsmacking visual effects, and enough solid action scenes to make your watch worth its while . However, while Valerian might be an astounding sensory experience, that's about where its highlights end.

'Valerian' Rehashes Previous Space Operas

Outside of being an incredible technical achievement (one that cannot be understated), by the time it's over, it just ends up feeling a lot more like "Valerian and the Movie of a Thousand Ripoffs." The world itself, and the idea of Alpha in general, is fresh and exciting. Just the idea of the existence of one thousand species that live in this society, all brought to life with incredible artistry, kicks this movie off with an invigorating and enrapturing start. Sadly, it falls into the typical beats of many other much better space operas . Two characters have to rise up to save their universe from a much larger, mysterious threat — thanks, we've all seen it. DeHaan has shown in films like Oppenheimer that he has the potential to kill it, but here, he lacks any real charm. The same goes for his co-lead, Delevingne. The pair has no chemistry , and even on their own merit, they don't seem to be trying very hard. When you think about the movie that Valerian's concept could have provided, it becomes a much bigger bummer that this movie turned out as bland as it did.

How Much Money Did 'Valerian' Cost to Make?

If you look at how much money Valerian made at the box office and have no idea what its budget was, your first instinct might be to call it a success. By the end of its run, Valerian banked $41,189,488 domestically and $184,684,740 internationally, resulting in a total gross of $225,874,228 . Hey, that's a lot of money, right? Well, once you factor in the budget behind City of a Thousand Planets , you might change your mind a little bit. This film, the most expensive indie movie ever made, cost $177,200,000 to produce . Yeah, we're talking about the big bucks, and that's not even including the marketing side of things, which can sometimes cost almost as much as the movie itself .

So, what on Earth (or on the City of a Thousand Planets) ramped the cost of this movie up to a production budget of almost $180 million? Well, given that it's a space opera, the answer is easy. Besson and the many other filmmakers behind Valerian had an entire science fiction universe that they had to generate from the ground up . This film is filled with stunning CGI-rendered worlds, creatures, and action scenes. It's not hard to figure out where the money went. The soundtrack was also filled out by acclaimed and prolific composer Alexandre Desplat , so there's another pretty penny. Not only that, there's a decent number of big names that make up this cast. Valerian doesn't just star DeHaan and Delevingne, Ethan Hawke is also in this movie, as well as John Goodman , Clive Owen , Elizabeth Debicki , Rutger Hauer , and freaking Rihanna . Yeah, the Rihanna! There's no way that this movie wasn't going to be expensive.

Luc Besson Discusses ‘DogMan’ and How Caleb Landry Jones Brought the Crew to Tears

Despite being a box office failure and generally critically middling, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets should not be a cautionary tale for big filmmakers to make pricey independent efforts. This is a movie where you can feel Luc Besson's singular vision through and through. Even though it is a massive financial gamble to set out on an endeavor like this, it also guarantees that the artist at hand retains pure creative freedom . That's endlessly valuable in filmmaking, but is virtually unheard of in big-budget science fiction movies, especially because most of them are done in the studio landscape. Besson's practice here can't be replicated often, but for the sake of potentially creating the next highly imaginative fictional worlds, hopefully, someone someday sets out with similar gargantuan ambitions.

Only the biggest movies that hit theaters cost as much as Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets , and this one did it independently . This might have put many people millions of dollars behind, but it at least rang true that independent films don't just have to be quaint, simple productions. If you band enough people together and raise enough money, then a group of artists can come through with a vision that is wholly their own. Box office earnings don't represent true success — artistic freedom does.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S.

Every Horror Movie Releasing in May 2024

Horror in May 2024 comes in many forms to fascinate viewers. Here are the films you should be thrilled about.

There have been some incredible horror films released in 2024, like The First Omen , Abigail , and Immaculate , with more yet to come. While there have been similarly awful productions, with films like Night Swim and Imaginary being utter disappointments, horror fans are eager about what's to come, despite the fact that certain highly anticipated releases are so far in the future.

That being said, before we get too excited about major horror releases like Smile 2 and Alien: Romulus , let's take a look at what the following month has in store for us. Thankfully, we have a limited number of high-quality horror films that are awaiting release . With that in mind, these are the horror films that will be released in May 2024, ranging from a film that takes a spin on the classic remote cabin theme to one centered on fortune cards that unleash evil.

Watch It in Theaters on May 3

Tarot is a supernatural horror film written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, who are making their feature film directorial debuts. The film, based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope , stars Harriet Slater, Avantika Vandanapu, and Jacob Batalon. The plot revolves around a group of college friends who discover sacred tarot cards in a remote cabin and use them to draw their fortunes, unaware that they may die as a result of their readings. Will the teenagers be able to survive the night and unearth the secret behind the tarot readings using the cards they've dealt on the table before it's too late?

Despite facing theatrical competition from the likes of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes , Tarot has the makings of a perfect summer horror thriller. The film will be released exclusively in cinemas on May 3.

15 Best Teen Horror Movies, Ranked

I saw the tv glow.

I Saw the TV Glow is an innovative take on the horror genre from A24, written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun. The story revolves around two teenagers, Owen and Maddy, who revisit their favorite TV show only to realize it has a supernatural world of its own beneath the intriguing fiction. When the show is suddenly canceled, the lines between reality and fiction begin to meld together.

If you've ever wanted to see things in fiction become mirrored in reality, this film will be an incredible encapsulation of this idea, given all the positive reviews from critics. The film made a huge splash at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and shares some visual similarities to Schoenbrun's previous film, We're All Going to the World's Fair . I Saw the TV Glow will be released exclusively in theaters by A24 on May 3, 2024.

The Strangers: Chapter 1

Watch it in theaters on may 17.

While horror films featuring horrifying ghosts and paranormal phenomena are quite popular, what most people are frightful of is the possibility that some of these incidents could even happen in real life. The Strangers was such a film that defied the norm of slasher films by showing the unsettling realities of the world. Following the release of the original movie in 2008, a sequel titled The Strangers: Prey at Night was released ten years later in 2018, receiving mixed reviews from the critics, with some considering it a subpar production compared to its predecessor.

After six years, Lionsgate aims to revive the franchise by returning to the beginning of the story and expanding its world beyond what the previous two films had depicted. The rebooted franchise will consist of three films, titled Chapters 1, 2, and 3, which will be released later this year.

17 Most Underrated Serial Killer Movies on Netflix to Watch Right Now

The official synopsis for The Strangers: Chapter 1 reads as follows:

From master director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, The Exorcist: The Beginning) comes a new trilogy of terror. In Chapter I, Madelaine Petsch (TV’s “Riverdale”) stars as a young woman starting a new life with her fiancé. Suddenly, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. What begins as a fight to stay alive becomes one woman’s journey of courage and cunning in this horror series bridging three compelling films.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 , directed by Renny Harlin and starring Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, and Froy Gutierrez, will be released theatrically on May 17, 2024. Meanwhile, The Strangers: Chapters 2 and 3 are still in the post-production phase, meaning they might be released in the fall of 2024 or early 2025.

In a Violent Nature

Watch it in theaters on may 31.

Slasher films have evolved significantly over the last few years, incorporating some great supernatural elements to make the killer more frightening than ever. In a Violent Nature , written and directed by Chris Nash ( The Void ), takes a unique spin on the slasher horror genre, set deep within the woods. When a group of teenagers stumbles upon a locket in a collapsed tower while on vacation, they wind up resurrecting the vengeful corpse of Johnny, who mercilessly slaughters them one by one in order to retrieve the locket while simultaneously making them pay for their actions.

This shocking horror film originally debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, with critics at the time praising the film's deliberately minimalist presentation, lack of a score, and deliberate pacing. The fact that the film takes place almost entirely from the perspective of Johnny is just the icing on the cake. In a Violent Nature is set to be released in theaters on May 31 and later on Shudder.
