Evangelism, Discipleship, Church Planting, and Clean Water/Health & Hygiene Education along the Amazon riverbank.

Servant Life partners with a local ministry in Brazil serving riverbank pastors on the Amazon. Making Christ known is our partner’s most valuable ministry. By serving local ministries they take the Gospel to those lost, disciple and develop believers, and plant indigenous churches. They do this through a relational ministry, making friends, not just converts.

What will my team be doing?

Teams join our missionaries serving along the Amazon sailing aboard a boat from mission base in Manaus. Each day you will stop in a new village and sail at night. Groups will have the opportunity to participate in evangelism, discipleship training, and home visits to the surrounding community. This can include sports, VBS, Biblical training for adults, crafts, handing out fishing kits, and water filtration tools. These are all great ministry tools, as we not only show up meeting physical needs and asking how we can pray for them, but we also have opportunities to share the gospel with them and get them connected to the local church.

Your team will also get a day of rest to enjoy the historic city of Manaus, where you can have a free day exploring the city, the market, etc. before heading to the airport for your flight home.

What does a general weekly schedule look like?

Saturday. Arrival in Manaus either Saturday around midnight or Sunday early morning.

Sunday. Travel eight hours up or down the river to the first community. You will be serving alongside one of our partner pastors helping him minister in the communities. On this day of travel you will get to experience the Amazon: pass by villages, other boats, see birds, possibly pink dolphins, monkeys, etc. Our mission is to champion the riverbank pastors and their communities. Simply put, we come alongside these pastors encouraging and empowering them to share the love of Christ in the Amazon River Valley. Everything we do is about championing our pastors. You will get to champion our pastors.

Monday - Thursday.  Ministry, VBS, home visits, evangelism, possibly water filter distribution, possibly audio Bible distribution, playing soccer with the villagers. If you have medical or dental team members there is the opportunity to serve in these areas. Depending on where we are, you will get to swim in the Amazon or one of its tributaries. You may get to hunt alligators at night or fish for piranha. There may be some light construction (very seldom). You may get to help the farmers work in their manioc fields (a great way to build relationships). If school is in session, you will get to share your story and hang out with the students.

Friday. Thursday afternoon or very early Friday morning (depending on when your flight leaves) we will return to Manaus. If your flight leaves Friday night, you will have all day to visit a floating souvenir shop, *fish for Arapaima, *swim with the dolphins, visit the Manaus fish market, or just hang around on the boat.

Saturday.  Arrive back to the U.S. from an early morning flight.

What does my cost include?

Housing. Your team will sleep in hammocks on our boat traveling down the Amazon with access to air-conditioned sleeping quarters, hot showers, and bathrooms. *$270 per each additional day on the boat

Meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day on the boat! (Note: You need to pay for your meals at the airport while traveling, etc.)

eVisa.  As of April 10, 2024, Visa's are required for all travelers regardless of purpose. Servant Life will assist with the application process prior to travel. In addition, minors traveling without a parent will require an authorization letter notarized by the Brazilian embassy.

T-Shirt.  Every participant gets an awesome mission trip t-shirt.

Pre-Trip Training Material.  We provide training sessions, trip overview documents, assistance from our team of mission trip experts, and communication with in-country missionaries to make sure your group is fully prepared for your trip.

Pre-, During, and Post-trip Devotionals.  This 4-week printed missions journal will help every team member grow and encounter Christ.

In-country transportation.  From the moment you land at the airport until the moment you leave, we will take you everywhere during the week. You will not need to arrange your transportation, but teams should be prepared to do some walking as we navigate different villages and communities.

Airfare is not included in the trip cost, but will be taken care of by Servant Life's travel agent who gets humanitarian rates and often free baggage. You may book on your own if you prefer to do so, but we ask to approve the itinerary first.

Optional Ministry Resources:

Sawyer water filters to be given to churches along the river - $28.

Evangelism Soccer Balls - $25.

Promoting Safety & Mitigating Risk

FOCUS Missions holds safety for our participants as the primary concern for any mission trip we send. We offer trips to locations once they have been initially researched and vetted with people on the ground, as well as checked and monitored for safety from our security consultant.

Other precautions FOCUS Missions takes include consulting government agencies, such as the U.S. State Department, the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and the Center for Disease Control regarding traveler health. FOCUS Missions also has a number of resources dedicated to promoting safety and mitigating risk, including training every Mission Director in safety and risk management at our Mission Director Leadership Summit, arranging insurance policies for each trip, and equipping our staff and students with safety guidelines at trip orientation.

FOCUS Missions takes great pride in partnering with local religious orders, apostolates, and organizations in every location we serve. We regularly communicate with our contacts before the mission to plan the trip and assess on-the-ground conditions. We reserve the right to re-route or cancel a trip if there is a confirmed safety concern.

“ ABWE’s vision has always been to inspire believers around the world to pick up the torch of missions.” — Cal Clark, ABWE Regional Director in Brazil

The Spiritual Need in Brazil

Brazil boasts a massive land area that borders all but two countries in South America, making it the fifth-largest country in the world, and it is also the sixth most-populated with 216 million people. The diversity in landscape and climate contributes to the distinction of people groups, along with a rich history of multi-ethnic heritage. Brazilians celebrate unity in diversity at the core of their culture, including through food, music, and the arts.

While Brazil has the largest Roman Catholic population in the world, and a proportionally large number of evangelical believers (25%), it is home to many other religions, including ethnic religions and spiritism. In the Amazon region, there are many indigenous unreached people groups. Additionally, the nation is a second home for millions of expatriates from dozens of countries, offering religious freedom not experienced by some in their home countries.

The Brazilian church is beginning to send their own missionaries all over the world, but there is still a great need for evangelism, church planting, theological education, missions partnerships, and leadership training so that Brazil can continue to grow as a force for world missions.

Evangelical Missions To Brazil

For more than 70 years, ABWE missionaries in Brazil have been working with people from virtually every segment of society. From tribal outreach to isolated people groups accessible only by seaplane, to working in wealthy communities and the shanty towns just outside of them, and everything in between—we’ve seen the gospel do amazing things in Brazil, and there is so much more to be done.

There are many ways to serve the people of Brazil—such as church planting, theological education, evangelism and discipleship. Many Brazilian church leaders need training to help their congregations become passionate about sharing the gospel not only locally but around the world. Brazilians are internationally accepted by many countries, including some where North Americans are not. Seeds planted in Brazil may see a harvest around the globe, as the Brazilian missions movement grows .

OUR HISTORY

Today, Cru Brazil has 65 missionaries and can be found caring out it's vision all over Brazil.

In 1970, pioneer Manuel Simões Filho loving known as Neco, started the movement in Brazil. Neco recalls that he started the ministry at the University of São Paulo with very little financial resources, so he had to make the "Four Spiritual Laws" evangelistic booklet by hand.

Over the last 45 years Cru has partnered with various churches in Brazil to promote relevant initiatives to evangelize the nation. One initiative that involved the national media was the distribution of the book, "Strength to Live", which was a testimony of a player from the Brazilian soccer team. Still today we hear testimonies of people that were reached for Christ by reading that book.

mission trips to brazil

Win, build, and send Christ-centered multiplying disciples that will build spiritual movements everywhere.

mission trips to brazil

Movements everywhere, so that everyone knows someone who truly follows Jesus.

Our 7 Components

Students

The university campus offers a wide range of perspectives. However, this multiplicity of opinions leaves many students without a compass with regard to an absolute truth. We are left with a generation that is the result of a society where ethics and morals are relative. Yet, today's students are seeking a genuine spiritual truth. From the moment they embrace faith in Christ, they feel the need to share this hope with others in creative and relevant ways.

Leaders

The Leader's movement believes that it is possible to change the society in which we live by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our commitment is to reach men and women in leadership positions and empower them to influence and develop other leaders in their areas of expertise. This is our mission field.

Church Planting

Church Planting

Generating Life is the ministry that works with Christian churches and aims to reach as many people as possible for Christ through evangelism strategies, discipleship and planting new multiplying churches.

The purpose of the ministry is to serve the Brazilian evangelical leadership by offering up-to-date, relevant and useful ministry tools that add value and fruit to the efforts of building and empowering pastors and leaders. Generating Life seeks to assist them in their task of caring for the body of Christ.

Digital

You might be surprised to realize that there is a new mission field located right inside your house. It is called the Internet, and it has created new rules. How are you reaching people in your community and in the world who do not go to church or who have never been to church? Think web-based evangelism.

Jesus said, "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; And then the end shall come." (Matthew 24:14)

Athletes in Action

Athletes in Action

Soccer, volleyball, basketball ... Almost every Brazilian practices or enjoys some sport.

We strive to win athletes for Jesus and we seek to train them and build them up in the Word. We want to help them integrate their faith in Christ with sport.

Whether we are working with professional teams, clubs, schools, communities or our international projects, the challenge is always to make Jesus known in all areas of society.

3 Support Ministries:

Prayer

We believe:

- prayer is not an activity but a posture of the heart, always attentive and connected with Jesus;

- prayer is how we live our relationship with God on the journey through greater intimacy with Him;

- God's work in us and through us begins with our daily connection and fellowship with Him.

That is why we seek to live a lifestyle of prayer.

Staff Care

If we want to have movements everywhere, we need to work on developing people. As a mission, we take care of those who are our most important resource: our missionary team.

Each person is accompanied from the moment he/she joins the team, throughout their missionary life. We work in the areas of relationship: with God, with ourselves and with others, as well as ministry and leadership skills.

Operations

We want to administer all the resources that we receive well, as we advance the vision and mission of the organization.

A flexible spirit is a must, as sleeping accommodations while on the boat could be a bunkbed, hammock or air mattress and could be co-ed. Global Awakening

MIRACLES • IMPARTATION • JESUS

More than a mission's trip.

This is your chance to find a community that’s empowered and launched into greater faith. It’s quite possibly the best example of the Global Awakening community in action: International Ministry Trips. These trips are an opportunity to find spiritual family, to be activated in the unique giftings God has given you, and to take risks in your faith.

There is a cost to an experience like this, but the benefits our trip members experience always outweigh the cost of time and money. Time after time we hear from trip members that this is when they began to see miracles happen… that everything changed after their Trips experience.

International Ministry Trip Attendees with Global Awakening

Destinations

We only want to go where God is calling us. Therefore our criteria in choosing trip destinations is based around several factors:

Where is God moving?

We look for places where God is using us and others to advance His Kingdom, so that we can partner with Him.

Where is the door open?

We look for relationships for the long term in the regions we visit. We want to see the local believers encouraged and built up.

Safety of the team.

It is important to us that our team members are safe, able to sleep in comfortable beds, and have good food to eat.

Manageable costs.

Our trips are all-inclusive (meals, lodging, in-country travel, itinerary), which allows us to keep overall expenses low.

Click Here  to Download the International Ministry Trips Booklet for more information.

quartzmountain

When preparing for a mission trip to Brazil, it is important to pack essential items that will help you have a successful and meaningful experience. Whether you are going to provide medical aid, build houses, or teach English, here are some items that you should consider bringing with you:

  • Clothing: Brazil has a tropical climate, so it is important to pack lightweight and breathable clothing. T-shirts, shorts, and comfortable shoes are ideal for the warm weather. However, it is also a good idea to pack a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
  • Insect repellent: Brazil is known for its mosquitoes, and they can be a nuisance, especially in more rural areas. Packing a good quality insect repellent with DEET will help protect you from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and Zika virus.
  • Sunscreen: With the tropical climate, the sun can be quite strong in Brazil. It is crucial to pack a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply frequently, especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors.
  • First aid kit: While on a mission trip, you may encounter minor injuries or illnesses. Having a basic first aid kit can help you address these issues quickly and effectively. Include items such as band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medication.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential, especially in a hot climate. Bringing a reusable water bottle will allow you to have access to clean water throughout the day. In some areas, the tap water may not be safe to drink, so consider packing water purification tablets or a portable water filter.
  • Power adapter and converter: Brazil uses different electrical outlets and voltages, so it is important to bring a power adapter and a voltage converter if necessary. This will ensure that you can charge your electronics and devices without any issues.
  • Language guidebook or app: If you are not fluent in Portuguese, consider bringing a language guidebook or downloading a language app on your phone. This will help you communicate with locals and show respect for their culture.
  • Money belt or pouch: It is always wise to keep your money, passport, and important documents secure. A money belt or pouch that can be concealed under your clothing is a good investment to prevent theft or loss of these important items.
  • Personal hygiene items: Pack travel-sized toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, and shampoo. You may also want to include hand sanitizer and wet wipes for moments when clean water is not readily available.
  • Gifts for locals: If you have space in your luggage, consider bringing small gifts to distribute to locals. These can be simple items such as school supplies, toys, or clothing. This gesture can help foster goodwill and build connections with the community you are serving.

Remember to check the specific requirements and restrictions of your mission trip organization before packing to ensure you are fully prepared. It is also important to research the region of Brazil you will be visiting to have a better understanding of the local customs and culture. By packing these essential items and being prepared, you will have a successful and meaningful mission trip to Brazil.

When packing for a mission trip to Brazil, it is important to consider the cultural norms and climate of the country. Brazil is known for its diverse climate and vibrant culture, and therefore, it is crucial to pack clothing that is appropriate for both the weather and the cultural expectations.

First and foremost, it is important to consider the climate of Brazil when packing clothing. Brazil experiences a range of climates, from tropical in the north to more temperate in the south. In general, Brazil is warm year-round, so it is advisable to pack lightweight, breathable clothing, such as cotton shirts, shorts, and skirts. It is also a good idea to pack a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.

While Brazil is known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere, it is important to remember that it is still a conservative country with strong religious beliefs. As a result, it is important to pack clothing that is respectful and modest. It is best to avoid packing revealing clothing, such as short shorts, tank tops, or low-cut shirts. Instead, opt for clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Dresses, skirts, and shorts that reach the knee or below are generally considered appropriate.

Another important consideration when packing for a mission trip to Brazil is the type of activities you will be involved in. If you will be working in a remote area or participating in outdoor activities, it is important to pack clothing that is suitable for these activities. Good quality walking shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts may be needed for protection against insects and other potential hazards.

It is also worth considering the local customs and traditions when choosing what clothing to pack. Brazil is a country with diverse cultural influences, and it is important to respect and adapt to the local customs. For example, if you will be visiting religious sites, it is advisable to pack clothing that is appropriate for these settings, such as clothing that covers the shoulders and knees.

Finally, it is important to remember that Brazil is a developing country, and as such, access to certain items may be limited. It is advisable to pack travel-sized toiletries and any necessary medications, as these may not be readily available. It is also a good idea to check the voltage of your electronic devices and pack the appropriate adapters.

In conclusion, when packing for a mission trip to Brazil, it is crucial to consider the climate, cultural norms, and activities you will be involved in. By packing appropriate clothing, you will not only be comfortable but also respectful of the local customs. Remember to pack lightweight, breathable clothing, respect the local customs by choosing modest clothing, and be prepared for the activities you will be involved in. With careful planning and consideration, you will be well-prepared for your mission trip to Brazil.

The Ultimate Guide: What to Pack for a Convention

When traveling to Brazil, whether for work or leisure, you may be wondering if there are any specific items or resources that would be helpful to bring for the local community. While Brazil is a vibrant and developed country with access to most goods and services, there are certain items that can greatly benefit the local community. Here are some suggestions:

  • School Supplies: Many children in Brazil come from low-income families and may struggle to afford basic school supplies. Bringing pens, pencils, notebooks, and other stationery items can make a significant difference in their education and help them succeed in school.
  • Clothing and Shoes: Donating gently used clothing and shoes to local organizations or individuals in need can go a long way in improving their quality of life. Especially in disadvantaged areas, where access to new or affordable clothing may be limited, your donations can make a significant impact.
  • Personal Hygiene Products: Basic personal hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and sanitary napkins are essential but may be difficult for some low-income communities to afford. Donating these items can improve hygiene and overall health in the community.
  • Medications and Medical Supplies: Access to healthcare can be a challenge in certain areas of Brazil, particularly in remote communities. Bringing over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, antacids, and basic first aid supplies can help address common health issues. However, remember that it's important to consult with local healthcare professionals before distributing medications.
  • Water Filters: In some rural areas, access to clean drinking water can be limited. Portable water filters or water purification tablets can make a significant impact by providing access to safe drinking water.
  • Educational Resources: Books, educational games, and learning materials can greatly benefit local schools and communities. Providing educational resources can help improve literacy rates and stimulate intellectual growth.
  • Digital Devices: In today's digital age, having access to technology is crucial for personal and professional development. Donating laptops, smartphones, or tablets to schools or community centers can bridge the digital divide and open up new opportunities for individuals and communities.

When donating items to local communities, it's important to ensure they are appropriate, culturally sensitive, and in good condition. It's also advisable to partner with established local organizations or NGOs that can help distribute the items effectively and ensure they reach those who need them the most.

In conclusion, while Brazil is a developed country, there are still areas and communities in need. Bringing school supplies, clothing, personal hygiene products, medications, water filters, educational resources, and digital devices can greatly benefit the local community and contribute to their overall well-being and development. By donating these items, you can make a positive impact and help improve the lives of individuals and communities in Brazil.

Essential Packing Tips for Your Havasu Falls Adventure

Planning a mission trip to Brazil can be an exciting and transformative experience. However, before embarking on your journey, it is important to familiarize yourself with the restrictions and regulations on items that can be brought into the country. Failure to comply with these rules can lead to delays or even confiscation of certain items. In this article, we will explore the restrictions and regulations you should be aware of when planning your mission trip to Brazil.

  • Research the customs regulations: The first step in ensuring a smooth entry into Brazil is to research the customs regulations. The Brazilian Customs Agency, also known as Receita Federal, provides detailed information on their website about what can and cannot be brought into the country. It is important to familiarize yourself with this information to avoid any issues at the border.
  • Prohibited items: Brazil has strict regulations on items that are prohibited from entering the country. Some of these items include firearms, ammunition, drugs, and certain types of food products. It is vital to ensure that you do not have any prohibited items in your luggage to avoid legal repercussions.
  • Restricted items: Certain items are allowed to enter Brazil but are subject to specific regulations or restrictions. For example, if you plan to bring medication with you, it is essential to have a prescription and a letter from your doctor explaining the necessity of the medication. Similarly, if you plan to bring any electronic equipment, such as cameras or laptops, you may be required to register them with Brazilian customs.
  • Duty-free allowances: Brazil has duty-free allowances for certain items, including clothes, personal hygiene products, and electronic devices. It is important to be aware of these allowances and ensure that you do not exceed them. If you exceed the duty-free allowances, you may be required to pay customs duties on the excess items.
  • Cultural sensitivities: When planning your mission trip, it is essential to be mindful of Brazil's cultural sensitivities. Certain items may be considered offensive or disrespectful in Brazilian culture, and it is important to respect and abide by local customs. For example, clothing that is too revealing may not be appropriate in some areas of Brazil, especially in religious or conservative communities.
  • Check with your mission organization: If you are traveling to Brazil as part of a mission organization, it is advisable to check with them regarding any specific restrictions or regulations they may have. Some organizations may have additional guidelines or requirements that you need to follow during your trip.

In conclusion, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the restrictions and regulations on items that can be brought into Brazil for a mission trip. Researching the customs regulations, being aware of prohibited and restricted items, understanding duty-free allowances, considering cultural sensitivities, and checking with your mission organization will help ensure a successful and hassle-free trip. Think outside the missions box, amor: 85-foot boats bring good news to amazon river basin.

' src=

LITTLE ROCK, AR – Over 1,000 tributaries flow into the Amazon River Basin that stretches over 4,345 miles. Because the mighty Amazon flows into the Atlantic Ocean in northern Brazil, many people suppose that the river basin lies entirely within Brazil.

Following several mission trips to Brazil, a small group led by Dr. Richard Walker formed the Amazon Mission Organization based on his commitment.

The Amazon River Basin actually runs through Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela as well as Brazil. There are more than 30,000 villages located along the banks of the world’s longest river and its tributaries. Following several short-term mission trips to Brazil, a small group of people led by Dr. Richard Walker formed the Amazon Mission Organization based on his commitment …

“To reach the unreached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the local church, regardless of the cost and efforts he would have to face. He ministered beyond all established perimeters, for he had a firm conviction in his heart that “People will not believe the words of your mouth until they feel the touch of your hands.””

Dr. Walker went home to be with the Lord in 2016. His missionary legacy has continued without interruption through the second and third generations of his family, who now minister and lead well-organized mission trips along the Amazon, Solimões, Negro, Cuieiras, and Madeira rivers.

The only way to reach the villages along the rivers is by boat. AMOR operates two fully-crewed vessels based in Manaus, Brazil – the Linda Esperança (Beautiful Hope) and the Amor e Esperança (Love & Hope). The boats become the temporary home of short-term missionaries (STM) for the entire time they are on their trip until they return to Manaus. Typically, the 85-foot boats house and transport 50 people at a time. The on-board crew provides all the STM meals and cleans their laundry every day. Everyone sleeps on hammocks.

Native translators accompany the STMs, helping to ensure their ministries within the villages and local churches is efficient and effective.

According to the Mission Handbook, “No two days are alike, and no trip is alike, but there are similarities.”

A typical day begins with an early-morning breakfast, followed by a meeting for corporate worship, praise, and prayer in preparation for that day’s ministries. The teams get a rest break following lunch before heading back into the village for afternoon and evening church services.

The “touch of your hands” supporting the primary mission of sharing the Gospel includes medical and dental service, distribution of eyeglasses, hygiene supplies, and other essentials. Specific ministries on each trip include Vacation Bible School, Women’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Construction, Hair Ministry, and Soccer Ministry.

The original intent of the Amazon Mission Organization ministry was born of a dream to support local ministries within the Amazon River Basin who would otherwise have no representation. That is still AMOR’s objective. That objective is also supported by the establishment of the Riverbank Bible Institute where indigenous men and women are trained and encouraged in their calling to share the Gospel.

Medical Mission Trips to Brazil

Thank you for your interest in imr’s medical mission trips to brazil this is a very unique opportunity to work with populations that have little to no access to healthcare and make a huge impact on their lives..

In the Amazon the World Health Organization recently reported a rise in health issues related to basic hygiene, water storage, sanitation, and insect control. Several health disparities exist within this region that illuminate different social determinants of health. For example, incidents of malaria, leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, and leprosy are disproportionately affecting those in lower socioeconomic classes and those who have no access to formal education. International Medical Relief (IMR) works with the community to provide health services and also education in order to help sustain the well-being of the community for the future.

Our primary goal of this trip is to care for locals with treatable and often preventable conditions. As such, much of the relief you provide at clinic will be for people who would have benefited from access to preventable care. At clinic, you will treat conditions related to malaria, dengue fever, leishmaniasis, and more serious tuberculosis. You will also help treat conditions of non-communicable diseases, including personal violence, alcoholism, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking-related illness. In addition, our IMR volunteer veterans report treating snake and piranha bites, fungal infections, and ear infections.

You and the rest of the volunteer team will also educate locals on how to stay healthy and how to care for their loved ones. One of the main focuses of this mission is dentistry. Because all community members are encouraged to attend, the demand for dental care will be high. Another main focus of this mission is women’s healthcare. We will provide general women’s and infant care, as well as strengthen the knowledge and skills of the local midwives.

mission trips to brazil

International Medical Relief started serving in Brazil back in 2010. Since 2020, IMR has had a total of 339 volunteers and staff serve over 7,000 patients. Also, since 2020, IMR has provided community health training, medical treatments, medical supplies and equipment, and clinic operations. IMR is able to provide house calls, which allows the IMR team to understand their patients and the community they are serving. Being part of the IMR team means gaining an understanding of the specific lifestyles their patients have, which allows for better health education that fits the communities specific needs. IMR continues to provide sustainable health care and education to communities in Brazil.

With diligent planning and preparation, IMR is dedicated to ensuring that specific goals are met on our missions, each in correlation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6, and 17.

IMR works to elevate vulnerable populations through shoulder-to-shoulder care with our local partners, creating workforce density, and a cadre of future healthcare and public health leaders in association to UNSDG 3: Good Health & Wellbeing.

Our medical mission teams also work toward UNSDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation by supporting and strengthening the participation of local communities in improving their water quality, and installing water filtration systems that supply communities with clean drinking water and providing education on hydration and hygiene.

In correlation with UNSDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, our organization works in collaboration and at the request of local hosts where we are under their direct influence and affluence. IMR never goes into a country without a formal invitation where there is a great community need for medical or dental care, and health education.

The Mission

During your time in Brazil, you will become intimately familiar with all the Amazon region has to offer.

Your team will live and work on the Amazon River, which means every day will bring breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and exposure to biodiversity. The demographic density in the Amazon region of Brazil is quite low, which means that many areas lack access to basic health care services and facilities.

You will be provided with extensive public health information to help you provide the best care possible for your patients, including statistics from past IMR teams. The remote river communities will welcome your team with open arms, a plea for care, and a friendly “obrigado” (Portuguese for “thank you”) upon your departure.

Lodging & Transportation

You and your team will live on a five star, world-class boat and set up a full medical and dental clinic in remote villages along the water’s edge. Without IMR, these villages have no other means of healthcare. Upon returning to your private riverboat each night, you will be welcomed with a feast of local cuisine and opportunities for stargazing, crocodile hunting, hammock swinging, and much, much more. After a dinner of local delicacies and remarkable desserts, the boat will make ready for your departure to the next clinic site while you take a hot shower under the stars and prepare for a wonderful night’s sleep without bugs or cares. Enthusiastic crowds will gather at every stop, and children will peer through every crack as they anxiously wait their turn for care and hugs from the IMR team. Enthusiastic crowds will gather at every stop, and children will peer through every crack as they anxiously wait their turn for care and hugs from the IMR team.

I can’t begin to convey the sheer admiration, respect, and love I have for all these people. This trip to Nicaragua, documenting International Medical Relief’s mission to make a very simple yet profound impact on the lives of those less privileged has touched my heart and helped guide it in a more meaningful direction. The bravery and unbridled sense of kindness woven throughout these people’s character and this experience has shown me something new and refreshing that I will never forget. From our IMR crew to the people of Nicaragua, you will be with me always. Madison, Team Nicaragua

Trip Highlights

Simply being in the Amazon, living on a riverboat, and caring for people with very limited access to care may be enough, but there is still more to see! Your team will have some time to discover Manaus, including the renowned opera house, Teatro Amazonas (the #1 rated place to visit in Manaus according to TripAdvisor!), the handicrafts market, and the Rio Negro Palace. You may also have the opportunity to explore the rainforest and “hunt” for caimans, explore the villages where you will work, and experience life aboard, steaming up and down the Amazon. Every IMR team member who has “taken the boat” will tell you – this trip is best!!

Food & Water

All food is typically provided during your stay. Please refer to your unique itinerary on our website to review which meals are provided each day. We may hire local people to cook for the team during our visit, or we may eat at restaurants or hotels. Lunch in clinic may include sandwiches made by the team or a feast prepared in your honor by community leaders. We recommend bringing snacks to eat during the day or evening or to supplement your lunch. High protein/high fat/high energy snacks are best. IMR also provides all of the drinking water for the team. Hydration and nutrition are extremely important for the health of the team. You are the best judge of your own health so please pack appropriate snacks and stay well hydrated on the trip.

Extend Your Stay!

Since you are already venturing across the globe, have you considered extending your stay by a few days to see Brazil’s most intriguing destinations? Did you know IMR offers an exclusive three-day extension to its volunteers?

By continuing your trip by three additional days, you will allow yourself to visit the world-renowned Ipanema. This is a neighborhood located in the famous city of Rio de Janeiro and is known for its namesake beach, incredible surfing, hiking trails, and spectacular sunsets. While exploring the beach, you can enjoy a sunset cruise or snorkeling trip. And, since you will already be in vibrant Rio de Janeiro, be sure you embark on a quest to summit Sugarloaf Mountain and appreciate the panoramic view of Guanabara Bay.

Itinerary is subject to change without notice.

Full Mission (7-8 Days)

You need to arrive in beautiful Manaus, Brazil  by 5:00pm to meet your team at the airport for your pre-arranged transportation to the boat  but you will want to come earlier! Take a taxi to the central square and see the famous  Teatro Amazonas .  While you are there, stop in at one of the coffee shops and then stroll through the art galleries – don’t forget to do some people watching!  Arrive back at the airport by 5:00pm for your pick up and short drive to your home for the week.

When you get there, check out your hammock and get your sea-legs (or river)!   This is also your departure evening from Manaus – join everyone on deck for the ride under the bridge and take some photos of the lights!

Team Orientation

You will be steaming on the Amazon or one of her many tributaries today.  Your team will gather in the bow to get to know one another and have a training session that will prepare you for the clinic days ahead!  Try out the outdoor shower on the stern – bathing suit required!

Training Day

Education is as important as medical and dental care for our patients. Each clinic includes basic health education according to the specialties and skills of the IMR volunteers, as well as the needs of the local people. When communities become empowered to take health and wellness issues into their own hands, they become self-sufficient. IMR provides learning opportunities for the local communities through classes and hands-on learning to sustain their well-being beyond our visit.

Each day you will steam to a new village, either arriving in the morning or docking overnight nearby.  Some villages are close to the water’s edge and some that may require you may walk on the boardwalks (there is lots of flooding in the Amazon) into the village.

You may set up clinic in a church, a school, or even in the village square.  Some villages will be small, others big.  This is truly a trip where you will see it all!   If you are lucky enough to catch a festival in a village, you will be sure to be right in the middle of the action!

Many clinic days will be spent helping those with malaria, dengue fever, tinea and scabies, chagas disease, leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, leprosy, and other common conditions throughout the Amazon Region of Brazil.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to provide education on hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and sexually transmitted diseases in addition to basic hygiene, water storage, sanitation, and mosquito/insect control. Your last clinic day will be spent helping patients and appreciating their rich culture.

This is your departure day – plan to depart in the late afternoon or evening to have time to get your land-legs back and see more of beautiful Manaus.  Your time in the villages is complete and you’ll take home great memories.

Don’t leave your camera home on this trip – there is a beautiful photo in your future – sunrises and sunsets on the Amazon, pink dolphins (watch the river for smooth shiny water and you’ll be sure to find them), wonderful riverfront stores and homes, and beautiful, laughing children and families!!

Crisis Management & Emergency Response

We take security very seriously at IMR. It is our job to ensure that security precautions are in place, but please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee your safety on the trip.

  • We continuously review all current activities occurring on the ground, and we work with the State Department and the U.S. Embassy to know the ground situation to the best of our ability.
  • A security training conference call is available to our volunteers where we detail our security procedures that are in place for the trip.
  • We take many security precautions such as radios, a buddy system, emergency evacuation plan and security planning.
  • We protect the privacy of our volunteers in the field and provide them with customized contact information for their use.
  • During our mandatory briefing, team members review our safety protocols, evacuation procedures, protocols for illness, natural disaster and terrorism. We provide training to our teams to be cognizant of their own safety and to be aware of their surroundings.
  • Several policies require teams to adhere to safety issues.

What is a mission trip?

A mission trip is an international volunteering opportunity centered around collaborative efforts with local communities to provide essential support where it is most needed. Why do people go on mission trips?

Mission trips are a popular way to combine your desire to travel and see with world with your motivation to give back and make a difference in the world. While some people see mission trips as an opportunity to put their faith into action, others go on mission trips for a variety of non-religious reasons, including:

To make a difference: Many people go on mission trips make a positive impact in the world through providing support to communities in a range of different ways. This could involve volunteering to teach English , building schools or homes , providing medical care , volunteering with animals or supporting environmental conservation .

To gain a new perspective: Traveling to a new country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be a life-changing and transformative experience. Mission trips allow you to see the world with fresh eyes and gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

To get out of your comfort zone : Mission trips are an opportunity to discover a new sense of purpose by stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering new countries and cultures, and living like the locals. This can be equally challenging and rewarding! Taking a mission trip is an opportunity to growth as person, discover your strengths and weaknesses and redefine your purpose in life.

While people go on mission trips for a variety of reasons, at the heart of it is a desire to make a positive impact on the world, connect with others and build a better future together.

Quote from IVHQ Volunteer Ruth Cartwright - Childcare in Sri Lanka

I recently returned from a mission trip to Sri Lanka and it was everything I dreamt it would be. I lived with a family in the jungle next to the longest river in the country, volunteering in a disabled childcare center. I was so happy with the project and had a wonderful - and sometimes challenging - experience. I would recommend this mission trip to anyone who wants to travel alone.

How much does it cost to go on a mission trip?

The cost of going on a mission trip varies depending on the destination and duration of the trip. IVHQ makes mission trips accessible to volunteers worldwide through affordable volunteer program fees and flexible durations.

For example, the cost of a 2-week mission trip with IVHQ to Tanzania is US$415, while a 4-week trip to India is US$585. These costs cover accommodation, meals, airport pick-up, and in-country support from IVHQ’s local team.

Additional costs that volunteers need to consider include the IVHQ registration fee , airfares, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or vaccinations. However, IVHQ provides detailed information and support to help volunteers prepare for their mission trip and manage these additional costs.

It’s worth noting that IVHQ also offers a range of fundraising ideas and resources to help volunteers cover the costs of their trip. For example, volunteers can create a fundraising page via IVHQ’s fundraising partner and share it with friends and family to collect donations.

IVHQ’s fees are transparent and inclusive, making it easy for volunteers to plan and budget for their trip without breaking the bank.

Brazil explored: immersive trips, diamond trails and long-lost tales.

There’s never been more interest in actual, genuine off-the-beaten-path travel than now. More and more tourists are searching out escape from the everyday—trips with fewer people, less (or preferably no) technology, and an opportunity to recalibrate and experience something authentic and life-affirming.

Stepping into the market with an offering that undoubtedly fits that definition is Gift of Go , who have launched an inaugural series of explorations into Brazil’s most remote and extraordinary regions for 2024.

Disappear into one of the planet's most biodiverse and least visited places.

Kicking things off is An Exploration of the Highlands of Brazil . A 14-day, 125-mile journey into the majestic Serra do Espinhaço departing on May 6th, a maximum of eight travelers and 10 expedition crew will trek, horseback ride, boat, bike, bushwack and overland their way across a labyrinth of lost historic trails and backroads in one of the planet’s most ecologically diverse places.

The trip promises Seussian landscapes, colonial villages and quilombos (former slave settlements), white sand beach fringed waterfalls, cola-colored rivers, bubbling hot springs and barely-visited UNESCO World Heritage sites. It will culminate at a famed Vesperata celebration in Diamantina, the UNESCO “city of diamonds.”

Journeys will lead to places of tranquility and solitude and beauty.

Apple iPhone 16 Unique All New Design Promised In New Report

The best romantic comedy of the last year just hit netflix, the world s best beers according to the 2024 world beer cup.

The Serra do Espinhaço was once the epicenter of the world’s diamond trade but has been abandoned and largely forgotten about by the outside world for close to 200 years. It’s home to three UNESCO destinations and two globally-renowned biodiversity hotspots in the Brazilian Savanna and Atlantic Rainforest. Yet despite this, its largest conservation unit at the Sempre Vivas National Park receives only a handful of visitors each year, and most of those are from the scientific community. What that effectively means is that, from a tourist perspective, you’ll have the place to yourself.

Experiences are broken up into four chapters. The Serra take visitors on an epic trek through the mountains. The Garden navigates Brazil’s hinterland of big cats and sharp plants, disappearing trails, forsaken ranches and disputed lands by pack-mule and jon-boat. The Sertão brings travelers to the lowlands along miles of open road to festive cow towns and legendary hospitality. Lastly, The Berço is the cradle, dramatic landscapes that lead to tales of hardship and glory and at its end, the slave-built highway that cascades into Diamantina.

Experienced local guides lead the way along often invisible trails.

Gift of Go will lead a collection of curated trips over the year. At 14, 21 and 28 days in length, they are meticulously researched and curated; designed to create deeply immersive, enriching experiences that are as demanding as they are rewarding and that have the power to change how we see the world.

In this sense, Gift of Go is pitching the trips less as vacations and more as immersive stories—more purposeful than recreational, more exhilarating than relaxing. Expect to be challenged by a diverse landscape of cultures, geographies and historic realities through constant immersion and candid, uncurated conversations and interactions with local people.

From highland to lowland, mountain to cradle, guests will hike, ride, bike and bushwack to their ... [+] destination.

In the press release for their first experience, cofounder Eddie Lott notes that, “We are living in the Golden Age of picture-perfect places, carefully-crafted ‘authenticity’, and readily-collectible ‘once-in-a-lifetime' experiences. GOGO trips are different—in our minds, there is simply nothing more compelling, profound, or enriching than experiencing real life in a world far from our own."

Gift of Go slow travel experiences kick off in 2024 on May 6th and run across several months throughout the year. For details, check the 21-day A Diamantine Tale and epic 28-day Diamond/Wild Tales + Lost Trails . A limited number of bespoke itineraries are also available.

A Broadened Perspective: Ian da Silva’s CMGlobal Mission Trip to Brazil

mission trips to brazil

Campus Ministries (CM) Global is aimed at encouraging students to act out of an overflow of God’s heart and purposes for peoples of all nations. The service abroad trips give students the opportunity to share God’s love, strengthen their faith and broaden their perspectives. Ian da Silva, a rising sophomore studying nursing at PBA, experienced this firsthand during his mission trip to Brazil.

“I chose to go on the CMGlobal missions trip to Brazil to connect with my heritage, while also pursuing the calling that I have had on my life for a long time now to pursue missions,” he explained.

The trip was a week long, and the students who attended lived on a medical boat, traveling through the Amazon to visit different villages each day. Some days involved door-to-door evangelism or helping out with local church services, while other days focused on service projects, like painting the homes of locals. The team was also involved with helping in the clinic, physical therapy and dental rooms that were aboard the ship.

da Silva said that his faith was strengthened by seeing the different ways that God worked in the villages. “The places we visited were so hard to reach,” he said. “We were literally in different villages in the middle of the jungle, and yet God was still doing incredible things and bringing people to Him.”

The trip reaffirmed da Silva’s calling to the medical field, and he came back to America refreshed and excited to continue his pursuit of a nursing degree. “I was able to gain a lot of experience, and I worked under great teachers and leaders,” he said. “I felt like I was in the place I was supposed to be. I want to help people for the rest of my life, especially those who are in vulnerable places.”

If given the opportunity, da Silva would encourage anyone to go on a mission trip with PBA. “It is easy to think about all the things that could go wrong, but when you trust in God and are obedient to His calling, He takes care of those things,” he said.
