More information about India
A holiday to India is a journey through a complex history, a colorful culture and a varied landscape which stretches from the snowy caps of the mighty Himalayas to the luscious coast of the abundant Indian Ocean . The 6th largest economy in the world and home to a staggering 3 billion people, India holds within its territory some of the worlds most mythical and iconic sights and cities such as the eternal Taj Mahal , Varanasi, the Ganges River, the lush beaches of Goa and Rishikesh, the world centre of yoga, not to mention the lively capital of Delhi . This vast country shares borders with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and its immense coastline, stretching for more than 7,500 kilometers , sits on the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Today, India is divided into 29 states and 7 union territories.
Nature in India
Lovers of nature are spoilt for choice when they take a tour in India . With habitat zones ranging from tropical rainforests to alpine forests and deserts , India is home to a plethora of endemic plant and wildlife species, the former of which contributes to its strong culture of herbal medicine and Ayurvedic practice. India is famed for its varied and exotic wildlife including Bengal tigers, lions, Indian and white giraffe , leopards and snow leopards , the majestic Indian elephant and the mighty Indian rhinoceros.
The country’s fantastically diverse wildlife is preserved in more than 120 national parks, although it is common to see wild animals roaming the city streets. Supporting such a wide array of wildlife, India is home to a range of geographical regions and landscapes, the most iconic being the Thar Desert , the snowy Himalayas , the lush tropical backwaters of Kerala and the unbelievable metropolises of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi.
History of India
With a history as vast as its size and stretching back as far as 5 millennia , a package holiday in India will open your eyes to a fascinating mix of traditions, cultures, and religions. Often called the ‘oldest religion in the world’, Hinduism is the largest religion in India, and across the centuries it has laid the foundations for the country’s culture and way of life. It’s founding texts, known as the ‘ vedas’ , were composed in India between 2000 and 5000 BC , marking the beginning of Vedic Culture , a key period in the northwest territories of the country.
During these ancient times in the central Ganges Plain , the territory was divided into 16 kingdoms, known as Mahajanapagas. By the 4th and 5th centuries , the Golden Age of the Gupta Empire had unified much of the Indian Subcontinent and encouraged progress through a practice of Hinduism based on devotion rather than ritual which prompted a proliferation of arts, architecture, and Sanskrit literature. As the centuries moved forward so Muslim dynasties and the famous Mughal Empire left their mark on the story of India.
During the Mughal era, from the 16th-19th century , popular monuments such as the Taj Mahal , Humayun's Tomb , Fatehpur Sikri , the Red Fort, and the Agra Fort , were constructed and reflected the artistic collaboration between both Persian and Indian architectural styles. The East India Company and the establishment of the British Raj also began in this era and its authority would continue until 1947 when Indian independence was declared. In 1950 , a secular and democratic government was established marking the new era of modern India. Today, the colors, rituals, spirituality and vibrant culture of India are known and admired worldwide, so a package holiday to India is the best choice for a full experience of the wonders of the country.
Indian culture
The world’s most populous country, India is known for its rich culture which varies from region to region. The official language is Hindi , although there are lots of regional languages that are widely spoken and English is the main language in which education and business are communicated. Religion is an important part of life in India and although Hinduism is the leading faith, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity and ancient Zoroastrianism all contribute to the melting pot of culture and rituals.
With a complex cultural catalog of beliefs and practices, concepts such as karma, dharma and the widely popular practice of yoga, all originate from India. Ancient languages such as Sanskrit and Sangam , are considered important pillars of culture in the country, although performing arts and music are at the center of India’s vibrant heart. Dances often act out myths, legends, and religious teachings and are an unmissable sight on a holiday to India.
In recent years the Indian film industry, sometimes known as ‘ Bollywood’ , has gained recognition worldwide for its brilliant mix of modern and traditional values, opening up an insight into today’s India to viewers around the globe. Family values are another important pillar in everyday Indian life, with a multi-generational patriarchal structure being the most common structure of family life. It is also common for consensual arranged marriages to be organized for the younger generations. Traditional dress is a highly recognizable part of Indian culture, seen in the colorful fabrics and patterns of the ‘saris’ and ‘cholis ’ often irresistible to visitors on holiday in India, who cannot resist buying the beautiful textiles to take home with them.
From the immortal deserts of Rajasthan to the sleepy backwaters of Kerala and spiritual ghats of Varanasi, India is a must-visit destination for all intrepid travelers. If you dream of having your eyes opened to a different way of life, to unbelievable devotion, to the most vibrant colors of the spring Holi festival and to the smiles and friendliness of the local people, a package tour of India will deliver these dreams to you.

The winters are warm and pleasant, summers are very hot and extremely humid and the monsoon season, which brings spurts of heavy rainfall and tropical storms. India — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips
A trip to India is a bombardment on your senses. The country introduces you to all kinds of sights, sounds and smells and it can be a bit difficult to take in everything the very first day. The only way to explore India is to be patient and give it some time. You feel the glaring lack of privacy, but you also come to fall in love with the fascinating beauty all around you. From a rich culture that dates back centuries to ancient archeological ruins that still stand in all their glory, from glittering temples to elaborate forts and palaces, India is a dream you never wish to wake up from.
The country has a long and colorful religious history and is famous for its celebrations and festivals. Irrespective of which time you choose to visit, you always have a festival to become a part of. And it is not just about exploring temples and worshiping deities. You can also rediscover yourself at one of those yoga ashrams scattered all over the country. People have been visiting India for decades and still find themselves falling in love with its culture, architectural riches and arts that easily rival the best of Italian renaissance.
Tour Highlights
- Stare in awe at the majestic Taj Mahal
- Explore the intricate artwork and ancient culture hidden in the Ajanta Caves
- Take part in the colourful Holi festival in Vrindavan

- Stroll through the tea fields of Darjeeling
Travel Tips
- Even if you’re a seasoned traveller, get ready for a culture shock. Heavily populated India is incredibly busy in terms of crowds, sights and sounds. Take it slow and be open minded on your India tour.
- Learn about common scams before setting off on your India holiday. A quick internet search will tell you the most frequent scams and how best to avoid them on your travels.
- Perhaps surprisingly for one of the world’s tech capitals, fast internet can be hard to find in India, particularly outside the country's largest cities. Consider buying a local sim card so you’re always connected.
- Have no worries about learning Hindi, English is widely spoken in India. You’ll also see it on most road signs, so navigation is relatively easy.
- Women, in particular, should opt for loose-fitting clothing. Tight or revealing outfits may generate unwanted male attention. However, no matter what you wear, Western travellers should be prepared for unwanted attention.

Escorted India Tour
My 15 day Escorted Tour of India with UncleSam Holidays met and surpassed my expectations. Thank you Amit Tomar. From the moment I was met at the airport (after a 14 hour flight) and presented with a garland of flowers to the last moment being dropped off for my return journey, I was treated not only as a VIP but as a friend. The driver I had for the first 12 to 13 days (Om Prakash) was excellent and if anyone has ever driven in New Delhi you know what the traffic is like lol. The local guides at each destination were very knowledgeable and friendly shout out to Mitesh in Udaipur, Wasim in Varanasi, they all were amazing. It will be a tour I will always remember. If you have a chance to visit India you will not be disappointed if you use this company.

Navigate the busy streets of Old Delhi on a rickshaw ride
The nation's capital rings to the sounds of car horns, chai stalls and the chatter of its 29 million inhabitants. Shuffle into an open-air rickshaw and ride through the streets of the Old Delhi, admiring traditional Havelis and stopping for a famous mango or pomegranate frozen kulfi to cool off in the summer.
Gaze at the sun-kissed Taj Mahal in Agra
Take a journey to Agra and be stirred by the ultimate symbol of fairy-tale architecture. Inlaid with precious gemstones, this ivory marble palace was originally commissioned by an emperor as a tomb for his wife, standing as a symbol of love and opulence since 1653.
Spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park
Clamber into the back of an open-top safari car and spot leopards, marsh crocodiles, hyenas and Bengal tigers wandering their natural habitat. Sprawling over almost 300km 2 , the Ranthambore National Park is also home to a 10th-century fort, giant banyan trees and many lakes.
Experience royal Rajasthan
Enthralling cities interrupt the inhospitable desert in Rajasthan, India's largest state. Home to around 30 royal palaces including the floating lake palace of Udaipur and the iconic peach palace of Hawa Mahal, you will be swept up by the regal heritage found in this part of India.
Visit one of the Bollywood studios in Mumbai
Take a journey into the metropolis of Mumbai to uncover the prestigious culture of the Indian film industry. Without knowing a word of Hindi or a single Bollywood film, you will be captivated by this passionate industry. Be guided past the homes of megastars and catch a glimpse behind the scenes as the cameras roll.
Our top 5 things to do in India
Let Trafalgar guide your India vacation through a majestic tapestry of landmarks and experience. From the Taj Mahal to the tiger parks of Rajasthan, these are just some of the soul-stirring moments waiting when you travel with us.
National Museum
India vacation tours get under the skin of the country's culture with a trip to the National Museum of New Delhi. Roam the halls and take in elaborate jewellery, ancient manuscripts and traditional miniature paintings on cloth. From the prehistoric to the modern, this expansive Indian museum is a must-visit.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya
The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.
City Palace
Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.
Best museums in India
Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.
A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.
Varan Bhaat Diva
Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favorite.
Chicken cafreal
Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.
Best food in India
Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.
What to pack for India
A few good books
The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.
Light and modest clothing
Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.
Medication for stomach upsets
Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.
Water purification devices
The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.
Wet wipes and hand sanitiser
True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

India & Nepal
Our Nepal and India tours immerse you in the spectacular beauty of the Indian subcontinent as you fly over the landscapes of Mt. Everest... visit a Buddhist monastery in Kathmandu... feel the spiritual passion of the Taj Mahal... and more.
- ITINERARIES
- FEATURED TOURS
Welcome to India & Nepal
From the Arabian Sea to the Himalayas, from the ultramodern architecture of New Dehli to the forests of Bandhavgarh National Park in India and Chitwan National Park in Nepal, our unique experiences show you the incomparable cultural diversity, compelling history, and spectacular natural beauty of the Indian subcontinent.
Kathmandu, nepal, i'm going to kathmandu....
Kathmandu... the very name of this Nepalese city conjures up images of one of the most exotic regions on Earth. Your stay in Kathmandu with Tauck takes you to Pashupatinath Temple on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, one of the holiest of all Hindu temples... a flightseeing adventure above the alpine landscapes of Mount Everest... a tour of Durbar Square, where ancient temples and pagodas are clustered around the old royal palace... a visit to Kasthamandap, the namesake of Kathmandu, said to be built from a single mythical tree... a rickshaw ride through the marketplace of Thamel ... and a visit to Kopan Monastery, where you'll take your shoes off and join the monks before traveling to the colossal stupa of Boudhanath, encircled by images of Buddha and hundreds of prayer wheels.
The Taj Mahal in Agra, India
A timeless monument to love in agra.
You could say that India's Taj Mahal is so famous that it needs no introduction… but it's so compelling a destination that it's hard not to talk about it. Considered the greatest achievement of Indo-Islamic architecture, this exquisite, domed, white marble mausoleum complex in Agra was commissioned in 1632 and completed two decades later as the tomb and memorial of Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Constructed at a cost that would be upwards of USD $825 million today, it ranks among history's most expensive declarations of love. Along with touring it with a local guide, you'll also see it from your hotel room!
The Khajuraho Temples, India
The famous temples of khajuraho.
The Indian town of Madya Pradesh is home to what today is known as the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you'll visit with Tauck, comprises a famous group of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Chandela Rajput Dynasty, praised by UNESCO for striking a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture... and famous both for their nagara-style symbolism, and the provocative nature of the statuary decorating many of the temples. Of the 85 or so temples that historians believed once stood in this area, only 25 have survived the ravages of time.
Jaipur, India
The gems of jaipur... and a remarkable way to see them.
The stunning city of Jaipur, India, is home to such highlights as the City Palace Museum, the Jantar Mantar Observatory, the massive gateways and pillared pavilions inside Amber Fort, and the magnificent domes and massive ramparts of Amber Palace. And there's no more exciting way to see these treasures than from above – aboard a hot air balloon soaring over Jaipur – an experience that's included in our "A Portrait of India" journey.

Exploring India’s Golden Triangle – Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur
Posted: March 25, 2024 | Last updated: March 25, 2024
The Golden Triangle, encompassing Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, offers an incredible journey through India’s rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking architecture. This iconic route explores the heart of India, providing a glimpse into the country’s royal past, colonial history, and architectural wonders. The journey through these three cities is akin to a passage through time, where each destination boasts its unique magic, from ancient forts and palaces to bustling bazaars and serene temples.
1. Delhi – The Capital’s Contrast
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Don Mammoser
Delhi, India’s capital, is where ancient history and modernity blend seamlessly. The city is divided into two parts: Old Delhi, a labyrinth of narrow lanes, age-old mosques, and bustling markets; and New Delhi, the imperial city created by the British Raj, characterized by wide boulevards, stately government buildings, and verdant gardens.
2. Agra – The City of Love
Agra is synonymous with the Taj Mahal, an eternal symbol of love. This UNESCO World Heritage site, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, attracts millions of visitors annually. Beyond the Taj, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri are profound examples of the Mughal Empire’s architectural brilliance. Agra’s rich craft tradition, including marble inlay work and leather goods, offers unique souvenirs.
3. Jaipur – The Pink City
Jaipur, the vibrant capital of Rajasthan, is famed for its rich Rajput history, stunning forts, and splendid palaces. The city’s plan, based on Indian Vastu Shastra, features the City Palace, Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, and Jantar Mantar, reflecting a blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Jaipur is also a shopper’s paradise, known for its gems, jewelry, textiles, and handicrafts.
4. Exploring the Markets of Delhi
Delhi’s markets are a vibrant example of India’s diverse culture, offering everything from luxurious silk fabrics to handcrafted artifacts. Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi, provides a sensory overload with its narrow lanes filled with the scent of spices and colorful textiles. For a more upscale shopping experience, Khan Market offers branded boutiques, excellent bookshops, and some of Delhi’s best cafes and restaurants.
5. Agra’s Mughal Heritage
While the Taj Mahal is Agra’s crown jewel, the city’s Mughal heritage offers much more to explore. The Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a red sandstone fortress that served as the residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty. It houses several exquisite buildings, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal. Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra offers a serene and less crowded historical site, showcasing the architectural brilliance of Mughal art and design.
6. Jaipur’s Amer Fort and Hawa Mahal
Jaipur, the Pink City, is famed for its rich architectural heritage, with the Amer Fort and Hawa Mahal as iconic landmarks. Amer Fort, located on a hilltop, offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the Rajput Maharajas. The fort’s Sheesh Mahal, or Mirror Palace, is a stunning example of artistic craftsmanship. Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, is known for its unique facade featuring 953 small windows, designed to allow royal ladies to observe street festivals while remaining unseen.
7. Culinary Delights of the Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle offers a culinary journey through India’s rich flavors and spices. Delhi’s street food, Agra’s Mughlai cuisine, and Jaipur’s Rajasthani dishes provide a feast for the senses. In Delhi, savor the chaat at Connaught Place or the kebabs in Old Delhi. Agra is famous for its petha, a sweet made from pumpkin, and savory kormas.
8. Art and Craft Workshops
Participating in art and craft workshops across the Golden Triangle offers an immersive experience into India’s artistic traditions. Delhi’s craft museums and studios offer workshops in pottery and textile arts. Agra is renowned for its marble inlay work, with workshops allowing visitors to try their hand at this intricate craft. Jaipur’s tie-dye and block printing workshops provide insight into traditional Rajasthani textile designs, offering a hands-on experience in creating your own fabric designs.
9. Exploring the Markets of Jaipur
Jaipur, known as the Pink City, is famous for its historic forts and palaces and its vibrant markets. These bazaars are alive with a riot of colors, offering everything from traditional Rajasthani jewelry and textiles to various handicrafts. The Johari Bazaar is renowned for its exquisite gemstones and jewelry, while the Bapu Bazaar is the go-to place for Rajasthani juttis (traditional leather shoes), scarves, and textiles.
10. Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, Agra
Image Credit: Shutterstock / YURY TARANIK
The Taj Mahal, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, offers a breathtaking sight not to be missed — the sunrise view. Witnessing the first rays of the sun illuminate the white marble mausoleum is a magical experience. The early morning light bathes the Taj Mahal in a soft, golden hue, highlighting its intricate craftsmanship and majestic beauty. This time of day is perfect for photography and allows for a more serene experience, away from the crowds that gather as the day progresses.
11. Folk Culture of Rajasthan in Jaipur
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Sunil lodhwal
Jaipur is not only famous for its historic architecture but also for its rich folk culture. Experiencing a traditional Rajasthani cultural performance is a must-do when visiting Jaipur. These performances include folk music, dance, and puppet shows that tell tales of heroism, love, and the everyday life of Rajasthan’s people. The colorful costumes, lively music, and graceful dance moves of the performers make for an unforgettable evening.
12. The Stepwells of Rajasthan Near Jaipur
Image Credit: Shutterstock / PhilipYb Studio
The stepwells of Rajasthan, known as ‘baoris,’ are ancient water storage systems that are architectural marvels in their own right. Near Jaipur, the Chand Baori in Abhaneri is one of the world’s largest and most beautiful stepwells, dating back to the 9th century. This stepwell features 3,500 narrow steps descending 20 meters to the water’s surface, arranged in perfect symmetry.
13. Polo Match in Jaipur
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Mukesh Kumar Jwala

India Tours & Holidays
There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.
Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is . Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.
Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs
India is one of the world’s oldest civilisations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practising Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.
At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.
While some behavioural standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Geography and environment
India shares land borders with Bangladesh , China , Pakistan, Nepal , Myanmar and Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.
History and government
Early history.
Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilisations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.
Recent history
By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernisation and globalisation. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events in India
Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervour of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:
Holi (Festival of Colour)
Take a whole lot of coloured powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolour Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.
Diwali (Festival of Lights)
India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colourful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.
Gujarat Kite Festival
Large, colourful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.
Mumbai Ganesh Festival
The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.
Pushkar Camel Fair
Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejewelled females take the chance to let their hair down.
