Family of Indian tourists caught stealing hotel accessories from Bali villa (Video)
Letâs face it: hotel freebies are wonderful. Few can resist the allure of all those complimentary pens, soaps and shampoos beckoning you to slip them in your bag and take them home. But thereâs a limit, people â not everything in your hotel room is up for grabs. One Indian family, who apparently has a different philosophy on the subject, learned the hard way that such behavior is not tolerated in Bali.Â
Over the weekend, a video of a family of Indian tourists getting caught red-handed stealing goods from a villa in the Sukawati sub-district of Bali went viral on social media. The clip, which was posted by Twitter user @hemanth, begins with a member of the villa staff going through the familyâs luggage in an apparent attempt to see if any of their luggage contained items belonging to the villa.
This family was caught stealing hotel accessories. Such an embarrassment for India. Each of us carrying an #IndianPassport must remember that we are ambassadors of the nation and behave accordingly. India must start cancelling passports of people who erode our credibility. pic.twitter.com/unY7DqWoSr â Hemanth (@hemanthpmc) July 27, 2019
In the video, a woman can be seen arguing with the staff, seemingly requesting to be let go since they had a flight to catch. The staff continues to search their bags and suitcases, and eventually discovered more accessories from the villa, which were obviously stolen.Â
At that point, the staff then asked them firmly to explain, and a man can be heard saying, âI will pay,â over and over again, only to be refused by the villa staff.Â
âThis is not about the money. I know you have a lot of money. This is no respect. You come to Bali, you just steal â no respect,â one of the villa staff says.Â
Based on a photo posted by the Sukawati Police, it looks like the family took quite a lot of stuff â including hair dryers, soap dispenser and hangers. We can see that some of the items are cute and âBaliâ enough to want to take home, but weâre pretty sure you can get hangers anywhere in the world, right?Â
Hemanth, the user who posted the viral video on Twitter, also wrote that âIndia must start canceling passports of people who erode our credibility.â He followed up the tweet of the video with other thoughts, such as the importance of a booklet on the doâs and donâts for Indians traveling abroad, claiming that the incident in Bali is ânot an isolated incident.â
Other Twitter users, many of whom appear to be from India themselves, have also expressed disgust and shame over the video.Â
A user by the name of Prakash Thaker even went as far as to say that the Indian government should âissue a lookout notice for them at all airports so that theyâre arrested immediately on return.â
What a shame. All those who know this family should share this on WhatsApp widely that dis family should not be able to show their face anywhere when they are back in India. The govt should issue a lookout notice for them at all airports so that they’re arrested imdtly on return. â Prakash Thaker (@ThakerPrakash) July 27, 2019
âAfter the (hotel) stuff was found, the guest admitted their mistake and apologized, and they returned everything they took while also paying for the missing stuff that was nowhere to be found,â the Sukawati Police explained in a statement.
The Indian family from the video may have managed to avoid getting charged by Bali authorities over the incident, but now that the video has gone viral and been covered extensively by the Indian media, they might have to deal with the consequences of their actions in a whole other way.

Family caught taking items from Bali hotel, sparking criticism online
A video of a family from India trying to pilfer items from a Bali hotel has gone viral.
It was viewed more than 379,000 times with several netizens lamenting that their action could cast a negative light on other Indian tourists travelling to the Indonesian resort island.
In the video, posted by fellow Indian and Twitter user, Hemanth, last Saturday (July 27), the family members were seen shouting at two men, believed to be hotel staff.
One of the men is seen rummaging through baggage and finding several items belonging to the hotel, including a bottle of liquid soap, towels, a mirror and a hairdryer.
"I will pay," one of the Indian men in the video is heard shouting shortly after.
"I know you have a lot of money but this is no respect," one of the hotel staff replies.
Bali police confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Saturday, saying that it took place at The Royal Purnama hotel on Jalan Purnama Beach in Sukawati.
Bali police said a housekeeping manager saw the guests throwing items over the villa wall, and this prompted the staff to check their luggage.
The Facebook post added that a supervisor at the hotel recorded the video.
"After the items were found in their bags, the guests acknowledged their mistake and apologised.
"They returned everything they took while also paying for stuff missing from the hotel room," the police said in the post.
In his post on Twitter, Mr Hemanth said: "Having lived in Indonesia and visited Bali, I can personally vouch for Indonesians being the gentlest, most respectful people I have met.
"They hold India and Indians in very high esteem and it's gut-wrenching to see us in such a compromised position."
He added that as Indians were now travelling extensively a booklet on appropriate behaviour during international travel was necessary.
Many netizens in India criticised the family while others pointed out that their actions were not representative of all Indian tourists.
Television host Mini Mathur tweeted: "The worst example of entitled Indian travellers who are a disgrace to the image of our country."
Another Twitter user, @Aaila_GOGO, said: "What a shame... don't understand what they get by stealing hotel items if they can afford a holiday outside India."

A family on holiday in Bali have been shamed online after they were caught red-handed stealing various items from their hotel room.

Why Aussies are flocking to Thailand city
A family on a luxurious holiday in Bali have begged for forgiveness after hotel workers found out they had stolen various items from their accommodation room.
The video, which was posted to social media, shows the family getting caught red-handed with luggage bags full of towels, a hairdryer and various toiletries that they pinched from their hotel rooms.
The incident, which reportedly happened in Bali, has gone viral online and viewed by thousands, with some labelling their theft as “disgraceful” and “embarrassing”.
In the two-minute video, hotel workers haul the tourist’s bags onto the streets from a parked car before opening the bags and exposing what the family had stolen from their room.
“Sorry, I will pay. Extra money I will pay,” a man is heard saying as employees ask him to explain why hotel items, including a hair dryer, soap dispenser, mirror and jars, were found in their bags.
The employee responds by saying the theft showed “no respect” to the hotel, while the family continues to apologise.
“It’s so embarrassing to watch that video from Bali where an Indian family was caught red-handed stealing from the hotel. Such a shame,” one person posted on the viral video.
“The worst example of entitled Indian travellers who are a disgrace to the image of our country. Casually stealing hand washes, room artefacts, hair dryers from a hotel room in Bali,” actress Mini Mathur said.

“The guest acknowledged his mistake and apologised, returned the items taken and compensated for items that have not been found,” the police statement said.

Indian family caught stealing from Bali hotel, sparks outcry
The actions of a family of tourists sparked outcry amongst fellow Indians on Saturday (July 27) when a video showed them getting busted for stealing various items from a Bali hotel.
In the clip, a hotel staff member can be seen perusing through the family's luggage, uncovering multiple objects and fixtures belonging to the hotel. The recovered items include bottles of liquid soap, mirrors and even a hairdryer, some of which were meticulously wrapped with towels, according to The Straits Times .
Members of the family can also be heard shouting at the staff members even after multiple attempts by someone appearing to be the hotel manager to get the tourists to cool down and stop yelling.

According to Zee News , the family had denied the theft and claimed ignorance. It was only after the staff members threatened to call the police did the family apologise and offer to pay for the items, but the staff refused to take their money.
"I know you have a lot of money, but this is no respect," he replied.
A man could also be heard angrily saying, "I would have bought you items worth Rs 50 lakh (S$99,600). Did you steal all this to store your pickles?"

The video was first posted by Twitter user Hemanth and has since garnered 350,000 views. He called to have passports of such tourists cancelled as they "erode (their) credibility" while adding that "a booklet on the do's and don'ts during international travel is urgently needed". His sentiments were echoed online by many other compatriots.Â
Television host and actress Mini Mathur was one of the first to speak up in response to the incident, calling them "the worst example of entitled Indian travellers who are a disgrace to the image of (her) country."
[embed]https://twitter.com/minimathur/status/1155061650237599745[/embed]
Former Miss India Gul Panag also shared that she was shocked but not surprised, stating other instances of hotel theft her friends had witnessed.
[embed]https://twitter.com/GulPanag/status/1155369757622673411[/embed]
Some netizens were also quick to point out that hotel theft was commonplace everywhere and not something exclusive to Indian travellers. However, others believe that the act being common doesn't make it right, and by coming under the spotlight, the family had brought great shame to them.

It definitely isn't the first time when things have gone missing from hotels. Even so, it goes without saying that theft in any form is unbecoming, and what can or cannot be taken from a hotel should be common sense.Â
Indian family steals stuff from Bali hotel; caught on video
While many of us would admit to stocking up on hotel freebies (toiletries and all), an Indian family staying at a hotel in Bali , Indonesia , went a bit too far. The family was caught stealing a wide array of hotel accessories by the hotel's staff members. The incident came to light after a video surfaced online, which has since gone viral.
Family stole hangers, hand washers, earthen pots, etc.
In the two minutes, two second-long video, which was shared by Twitter user 'Hemanth' on Saturday, hotel staff members can be seen searching through the family's luggage. They found various items including hangers, hand washers, earthen pots, hairdryers, etc. Initially, the family is heard arguing with the staffers, however, when someone mentions calling the police, they adopt a more apologetic tone.
Man offered to pay for stolen items; staff refused money
In the clip, a woman can be heard asking the staff to not alert the police while a man repeatedly apologizes and even offers to pay for the stolen items. However, the staff maintains that it's not a matter of money, but respect.
Here's the video of the incident

People suggest family's passports should be canceled
Pointing out that Indonesians treat Indians with the utmost respect, Hemanth suggested that Indians should travel with a list of dos and don'ts, adding that the Indian government should consider canceling the passports of "people who erode our credibility." A Twitter user chimed in, "If they can afford a holiday outside India then I am sure they can easily afford them."
Many people on Twitter criticized the family

Swiss hotel issued notice for Indian travelers to watch behavior
Hemanth also drew attention to the fact that just last week, industrialist Harsh Goenka had shared a notice from Hotel Arc-en-ciel (Gstaad) in Switzerland , which laid out guidelines for Indian travelers, such as not taking food away when they leave from the buffet breakfast. Goenka had slammed the hotel, but acknowledged that Indian tourists can be "loud, rude, and not culturally sensitive."

The video had Twitterati fuming who called the whole incident disgraceful.
A video of an Indian family caught stealing a plethora of accessories from a hotel in Bali has gone viral on social media. The video, which is 2:20 minutes long, shows one of the hotel staff scanning the family's luggage as they were on their way out from the hotel.
In the video, a woman can be seen arguing with the officials from the hotel who seem to be vigorously going through the suitcases. Apparently, the family had "stolen" whatever they could get their hands on - which included decorative items, toiletries, electronics, towels and so on. The security officials can be seen telling the family that they'd managed to steal 'everything' from the hotel room, including hangars.
She repeatedly asks the officials to let them go since they had a flight to catch. She even offers to pay for the stuff they'd stolen. A man also can be heard saying, "I will pay." However, the hotel officials refuse to accept payment.
The video was originally posted on Twitter by a user named Hemanth, who wrote "this family was caught stealing hotel accessories. Such an embarrassment for India. Here's the thing, simply offering to pay for goods that have been taken without the permission of the hotel IS NOT OKAY. A lot of Twitter users have been demanding that the family be banned from travelling; while that's taking it too far, some concerns are valid - that this incident does portray Indian tourists in a bad light.

Viral Video: Indian Family Steals Everything From Hotel Room In Bali, Gets Caught By Staff
A video of an Indian family stealing items including towels, toiletries and electronics has surfaced on social media and the internet is raging with anger about their behaviour. While travelling to another country, it is necessary to keep in mind that as tourists you are representing a nation and such actions could be truly embarrassing.
In this theft case, the family represented India in Bali and was caught stealing hotel artifacts and equipments while they were leaving the hotel. In the video, one of the staff members was seen searching the family's luggage while they were on their way out. If you haven't seen the video yet, watch it here.

When Indians Travel: From pushing to stealing, why the Indian traveller is just so embarrassing
An Indian family recently made news for allegedly lifting items from their hotel rooms in Bali. Even as their video went viral, the truth is, they are not alone. There are millions like them.
It was waiting to happen.
The idyllic summer almost had the perfect ending â almost.
But then, greed tempted with one last swoop and quietly went in the hair dryer.
That was probably what did them in because you can take the Indian out of India â but it seems some Indians can't leave behind their overpowering sense of entitlement, in this instance, the urge to steal anything and everything that a hotel supplies to a guest to make his or her stay comfortable.
Only this time, the family, which had enough money to reach the golden shores of Bali, but apparently not enough self-respect to leave things in their hotel room alone, were caught and shamed as the video of their reportedly stolen goods being confiscated went public.

No, we aren't talking about those shampoo bottles and soaps taking which seems to be a rite of passage for most Indian travellers. Instead, out tumbled from their suitcases that hair dryer â how one even rips off the electric cords which are usually attached is another story â soap dispenser, glass jars and even clothes hangers!
In a video that has gone viral, the family can be heard pleading with offers to pay for what they reportedly nicked because Indians, more or less, are at least smart enough to admit â everything has a chance of being bought off. Despite the indignation on why the public shaming, let's be clear the family was in no way representing the country or you and me â but the behaviour of the family in Bali does have ramifications for you and me. It is precisely why a hotel in Switzerland put out a notice specifically for Indian guests to not steal breakfast food for lunch or to speak very loudly in the corridor or balcony. Or why Thailand has scant respect for Indian travellers. Unfortunately, we are what our countrymen do.
After the Bali incident, there was also the predictable outrage. "This was a small souvenir for us since hotels charge a bomb," the drawing room couch-sitting Indian was ready to go to war again!
Nationalism and its various hues can keep surprising you these days.
If you think the shamed family's vacation ended faster than they thought, meet the traveller whose holiday hangover lasts only till the flight back home. The 'ants in my pants' Indian traveller is on the flight, the one who's standing clumsily, yanking his overhead luggage down even before the flight has stopped taxi-ing. Not just that, he elbows children and pushes ahead of old ladies in the narrow aisle as though the plane will take off and reach Paharganj if he doesn't disembark immediately. There is nothing uglier than an Indian who does not believe in standing in a queue waiting for his turn, whether it is inside a plane or outside a cinema hall. For those who respect the rules, it is easy to give up the fight, especially when you can't afford to blink and miss your place in the line. Nor is literacy or education a criteria here â there is apparently just no school that can give some of us lessons in patiently waiting our turn.
We are too evolved for that!
Which is why air-hostesses on several of our international flights look like they are flying the punishment sector â the drunk passenger can't believe his luck that the alcohol is free while a few rows behind, a couple is busy watching a movie, oblivious to their child throwing a tantrum and screaming in the aisle. Yet, we are the same people who are constantly eulogising our 'parampara' as though the louder the self-proclamation, the greater we will become.
The joke is always on us.
The new Indian traveller belongs to the burgeoning middle class which now wants to go on a 'phoren' holiday instead of heading off to the hills of Shimla. Being aspirational is good â but remember back home, the bullet trains are coming. What happens then? The train-travelling Indian has his own (un)culture and it includes vandalising screens and defacing windows of these fanciest of trains.
Earlier this year, the newly upgraded Surat-Muzaffarpur Express didn't even survive its maiden journey. Faucets and valves from the bathrooms were stolen quicker than the train crossed platforms on the way to its destination. If you think that was an isolated incident, you only need to look around when you next travel in a train.
Last year, the fancy Tejas Express was launched with much fanfare from Bombay to Goa â but by the time the train reached Goa, its LCD screens had been broken, electric wires pulled out and most of the headphones were missing, forcing Indian Railways to scrap the infotainment system on which crores were spent.
Also never forget, the Indian traveller (or otherwise) loves a good spit, with or without paan in his mouth, whether it's Muzaffarpur, where 160 children died of Encephalitis in paan-stained hospitals or the holy Jagannath Temple in Puri which has had enough of the unholy transgression and banned eating paan on its premises from August 1.
Anyway, once we have broken queues and screens and made our way to our cars, unless we get home service, like the Ranji player Harpeet Singh who reportedly drove his car straight to the Andheri platform, we press on the accelerator back home â as though our next holiday depends on it.
Red lights are only things taught to our children, wrong side of the road becomes the right way if the queue of cars is too long and God forbid, an ambulance blocks our path. We will not give way because hey, life and death are insignificant on 'mere baap ki sadak'.
Two years ago, a 45-year-old heart patient died because the ambulance in which he was being taken to hospital after he suffered a heart attack was stuck in a jam.
The distance from his home to the hospital was barely 10 minutes.
While the travelling Indian expands his itineraries to countries like Hong Kong, he will never emulate how thousands of people during the recent street protests did a modern-day rendition of Moses and the sea as an ambulance made its way forward.
Frankly, he doesn't have the inclination.
When everything else fails, there is always our own home-made system of adjustment â 'jugaad'.
That is precisely what the family in Bali apparently tried by offering to pay their way out of the embarrassment. Maybe there is no shame in following China's footsteps and handing out that guide to every Indian traveller â 10 steps on how not to be the Terrible Indian Traveller, because, although they say the world is our oyster, the literal Indian may end up leaving an empty shell behind.

Hopeless wanderers
Shame the crude tourist into behaving.
It was a cringeworthy and brutal example of the sheer ghastliness of the Indian traveller when a video of a family caught stealing from a hotel in Bali went viral two weeks ago. Distressingly, viewers could hear the Indiansâ aggressive stance with the Balinese authorities, even as they unearthed mirrors, jars and hairdryers from their bags. Eventually the family could be heard whimpering in embarrassment, offering to pay for the stolen ware. The video was viewed lakhs of times on Twitter, and the Indian tourist roundly condemned by the press and on social media.
A few days before this incident, industrialist Harsh Goenka had posted the welcome note Indian guests received when they checked into the Hotel Arc-en-Ciel in Gstaad, Switzerland. It went âDear guests from Indiaâ and the first point was regarding their buffet: âPlease do not take anything with you, the food is for breakfast onlyâ. The second point was even more damning: âThe other guests want an appetising buffet also, please only use the cutlery provided.â From this are we to infer that the Indians were carrying their own ladles and ferrying the food away? Anything is possible. The hotel has since apologised for this note after accusations of racism but clearly, the code of conduct needs to be spelt out if visitors from one particular country constantly disregard established rules of etiquette. Sadly, this is the image of the Indian traveller, an unscrupulous user whoâs always pushing the boundaries of decency.
The logic applied by a person of dubious values who thinks itâs okay to pinch stuff from a hotel is banal and depressing: weâve paid for the room and hence are entitled to pocket a few things that catch our fancy. One can always justify itâs not stealing, exactly â more like really stretching the honour code. However, the hotel has allowed a stranger in, assuming the guest will consciously choose to be honest. The guest has a moral obligation not to break that trust, and especially not on the grand scale the Indians in Bali did. Itâs true only a minuscule few (staunch Gandhians probably) can claim to have never absconded from a hotel room without a miniature bottle of shampoo and a few tiny bars of soap. And those fluffy bedroom slippers, which are, in all fairness, the property of the wearer the minute they put them on. Surely for hygiene reasons the hotel canât reuse them, so, naturally, a guest may presume theyâre his. But who walks off with a hairdryer thinking they wonât get caught?
Most hotels factor in a degree of thievery into their annual budget , as a cost of doing business. Pilfering isnât limited just to Indians. But our reputation abroad and with hoteliers in our country is that of uncouth hagglers, out for ourselves at the cost of everyone elseâs comfort. The hideous debacle of the Indian family in Bali has led to a lot of heated debate about what our responsibilities are as citizens when we step out of the country. In a larger sense, all of us are connected and affected by the actions of our fellow citizens. When an Indian passenger gets drunk on a flight, leers at the attendant waiting on him, it reflects on all of us. It shows up in a million, small, different ways, the inordinate delays in visa processing for Indians, being just one of them. It is ridiculous that Indians have to furnish bank statements for up to a year for entry to some European countries but itâs because the general consensus is, they are not to be trusted.
Itâs surprising that big hotel chains and airlines donât yet have systems like AirBnB and Uber where everybody rates everybody. It is a sad fact about human nature that in the absence of consequences, our narrow self interest tends to take over â and we cheat to get ahead. Since itâs a given that people will behave unethically given half the chance, the solution lies in taking that opportunity away from them. Ratings force people to behave themselves. Since basic values have eroded so much, in the future itâs the one-to-five scale that the world will be relying on to go back to a culture of integrity. Something like the nicely phrased and to-the-point board outside every departmental store â âYou are under surveillanceâ.

Indian Family Caught with Stolen Accessories from Bali Hotel; Call For Responsible Tourism
A video showing an Indian family caught stealing accessories from a Bali hotel went viral on social media recently. The video shows a man scanning the baggage of the group while members can be seen arguing with the staff.
As the man opens the suitcases, he finds things stolen from hotel room including towels, electronics and decorative items.
After being caught, a woman from the group apologises and offers to pay. " Please let us go because we have to catch our flight," she says. The staff refuses to take money and says, "this is no respect."
The video was first shared by a user on Twitter with the caption who pointed out that this was a shameful moment as we are ambassadors of the nation.
This incident is not only embarrassing for one particular family that was shown in the video but also brings a bad name to all Indians.
We must remember while travelling abroad that even as tourists we represent our country and our conduct shapes an image of our nation and fellow countrymen abroad. There is a strong need to understand the moral responsibility that comes along with travelling.
However, this is not the first time that Indians have been âembarrassedâ because of some irresponsible tourists as earlier Hotel Arc-en-ciel in Gstaad, Switzerland had issued a notice with rules only for Indian guests.
As industrialist Harsh Goenka pointed out while slamming the Swiss hotel for its rules for Indians pointed out that as India is becoming an international power, the tourists are our best global ambassadors.
