Why honeymoon in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar island is where every couple will be spoilt for choice with its allure of magic, romance and blissful beauty.

A honeymoon in Zanzibar allows newlyweds to feel like royalty with candlelit dinners, luxury spa resorts, five-star service and immaculate cocktails by the beach overlooking the crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters.

Here guests will not only find secluded beaches and elegant modern villas, but also sundowner dhow cruises, private pools, Arabian-styled beach hotels and incredible local seafood restaurants in the UNESCO world heritage Stone Town, a romantic old quarter in Zanzibar City.

What activities can honeymooners do in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar (Unguja Island) is one of four islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago and enjoying the incredible beaches and surrounding pristine waters are a must. Nungwi Beach is a perfect place for honeymooners, a rustic beach in the quaint village of Nungwi surrounded by palm trees.

The crystal clear waters make it an ideal place for trying scuba diving, snorkelling and other water sports or swim with dolphins at Kizimkazi. Couples can also bathe in the beautiful turquoise waters and sip G&T’s with their toes in the sea.

At Stone Town, the old town’s maze of narrow streets and alleys have attracted adventurous couples for years, and new cosy restaurants and intimate hotels have only added to the quarter’s charm.

The twisting passageways are also home to an increasing number of speciality shops and boutiques, stocking high-quality, made-in-Zanzibar jewellery, clothing and accessories.

Carrying a small amount of Zanzibar currency , the Tanzania Shilling (TZS) is recommended as back-up when paying for items where credit card facilities are unavailable.

High above the streets, rooftop restaurants serve intriguing cocktails and delicious seafood, with glorious sunset views across the palm trees and over the bay.

Those looking for an authentic slice of Africa are in luck as couples can easily add on wildlife safaris to mainland Tanzania to their beach trips, viewing the most incredible large animals including elephants, giraffes, lions and leopards in their natural habitat.

Honeymoon beach and safari tours can be adapted per the honeymoon couple’s preferences and budget, with combinations of luxury lodges, tented camps on raised timber floors to camping in the bush with internal plane transfers between camps and professional tour guides.

Unmissable safari park destinations include:

  • Serengeti National Park
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Selous Game Reserve

Apart from the sea and safari, a Zanzibar honeymoon can also include many other activities.

This can include visits to Cheetah’s Rock conservation centre, Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve, Prison Island or day trips to the other archipelago island charms of Mafia Island, Pamunda Island, Mnemba Island and Jozani forest.

When to go on a honeymoon in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is very pleasant from June to October as these are the cool and dry months of spring. December to February is also perfect as the island is warm and dry, perfect for those incredible sunsets.

Heavy rains tend to fall in Zanzibar from mid-March to late May. Understanding the best time to visit Zanzibar is useful as this can impact flight prices and availability.

Cost of a honeymoon package in Zanzibar?

The price of a Zanzibar honeymoon is difficult to estimate given the cost can depend on so many factors including the selection of accommodation options, flights, transport, meals, duration of stay and more.

A more ‘affordable’ Tanzania honeymoon cost estimate can start from £3,000/$4,050 to £4,000/$5,500 for two people.

A more luxury Tanzania honeymoon cost estimate can start from £11,700/$15,800 for two people with 5-star lodges, transportation and private guides and activities included.

Zanzibar honeymoon locations

Zanzibar honeymoons typically involve spending most time on the main Zanzibar island of  Unguja where guests can dive in the turquoise water, chill on some of the best Zanzibar beaches with their inviting white sand and toast the incredible sunsets.

After a day of adventure or relaxation by the beach, guests can relax in the most incredible luxury accommodation with all mod cons as well as swimming pools and cocktail lounges or take a boat trip to the nearby stunning islands of Pamunda , Pemba island , Chumbe and Unguja Island .

Travellers can fly to Zanzibar via the island’s main airport (ZNZ) for visitors wondering how to get to Zanzibar . ZNZ airport is located 3.1 miles south of Stone Town, the main city on the island and a Zanzibar visa and certain vaccinations may be required to enter the country.

Zanzibar honeymoon lodges

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

A number of honeymoon lodges with excellent reviews have caught our eye. Below, we’ve summarised the top picks couples can choose from:

Baraza Resort & Spa

This stunning hotel, that sits on the east coast of Zanzibar, is infused with Zanzibari and Arabic designs, bringing you back to the era of the Sultans. Located in Paje beach, Baraza Resort & Spa is a 5-star all-inclusive hotel that is particularly adored by honeymooners.

Although there are about 45 rooms, the villas are well located around the manicured gardens, offering a spacious and private feel. Their interior has been hand designed and built to the highest specifications, using marble and dark woods throughout.

As far as luxury accommodation goes in Zanzibar, Kilindi has raised the bar of what is to be expected at the top end of the market. The accommodation at Kilindi is unique, with rounded pavilion suites spread along the hill overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Each pavilion is set on its own tropical garden, and with its own private plunge pool and dedicated butler, privacy is most definitely guaranteed.

Away from your private suite, the main pavilion offers a 25-metre infinity pool overlooking the waters of the Indian Ocean, and a waterfall bar, alfresco dining and a relaxing spa are just a few of the other facilities to make a visit to.

White Sands Villas

The 5-star villas that form White Sands are situated on the eastern coast of Zanzibar and are ideal for couples looking for spacious accommodation in a private retreat.

The villas (a choice of one, two or five bedroom villas), are set amongst tropical gardens and a white sand beach, with access to the communal facilities such as a rooftop lounge, a restaurant, bar, pool and spa.

The villas are the height of luxury – with modern and sleek architecture and the villas features including outdoor staircases, private rooftops and relaxing daybeds.

Boutique Hotel Matlai

Boutique Hotel Matlai is located on the south east coast of Zanzibar hidden amongst beautiful tropical gardens, and when it comes to the level of service and attention to detail, we would argue it is the best on the island!

Without fail, the head chef will ask guests on a daily basis what they would like to eat and where. Lobster on the beach? Not a problem.

On top of their luxury accommodation and open air bathrooms, romantic extras such as candlelit dinners, cocktails on arrival, rose petal decorations, private open-air cinemas and breakfasts in bed are offered to newlyweds in their honeymoon packages which makes a stay even more memorable!

The Z Hotel

In the heart of Nungwi, the Z Hotel has a wide choice of accommodation to choose from, including deluxe sea view rooms, rooftop suites, ocean front cottages and its ‘Kidoti’ villas that sit on a small cliff that overlooks the Indian Ocean.

Honeymoon couples that stay a minimum of 4 nights receive, free of charge, a fresh fruit platter and a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, and a lobster dinner for two on any night of their choice.

Extend your stay to 6 nights and the newlyweds will receive an additional 30 minute luxurious couples massage on top.

The Ultimate Zanzibar Honeymoon Guide: Zanzibar Honeymoon Tips & Best Hotel

Planning the ultimate honeymoon in Zanzibar? Read our expert guide on the top destinations and hotels for your Zanzibar honeymoon.

We think that Africa is ridiculously underrated when it comes to honeymoons. And, if there was a single destination to prove its worth, it’s Zanzibar.

This archipelago is a short distance from the coast of Tanzania and is peppered with serene beaches, dense tropical forests, and rich culture and history.

We know it’s a great place to vacation, but how about taking a honeymoon in Zanzibar? Here’s why it’s an unforgettable location for a honeymoon .

Why Honeymoon in Zanzibar

Tanzania

The Tanzanian island of Zanzibar is awash with culture and beauty. That alone should be enough to convince you.

Whether you’re a history buff intent on exploring ancient Zanzibar City or are more likely to spend your time on the beach worrying about nothing more than your next swim, a Zanzibar honeymoon is a perfect choice.

Read on to discover our favorite ideas for a honeymoon in Zanzibar.

Best Honeymoon Hotels & Resorts in Zanzibar

Tulia zanzibar unique beach resort.

Best for a Private Beach Honeymoon in Zanzibar

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

Looking to relax and romance on a private beach during your honeymoon in Zanzibar? That seems like a rhetorical question – but we thought we’d ask anyways.

The Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort will exceed any expectations you may have about a beachside retreat and ranks up high with any waterfront location we’ve discovered in Africa , including Seychelles , for a honeymoon.

Where to stay when you visit this boutique hotel on the Indian Ocean? The Beach Front Villas are the crown jewels of the property.

The thatched roof suite is immaculate inside and features a modern design and amenities that make you feel at home.

But you’ll also want to set aside plenty of time to lounge on your patio, where you can stroll right out to white sand beaches to begin your perfect day on your Zanzibar honeymoon.

Kiwengwa Beach Resort

Best for a Luxurious Zanzibar Honeymoon

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

The best honeymoon hotels Zanzibar offers are often next to the beach. And, why not – the small Tanzania archipelago is big on white sands, blue waters, and fun in the sun.

So, where do you stay if you want a high-end honeymoon in Zanzibar near the water? We love the idea of a Zanzibar honeymoon at the Kiwengwa Beach Resort .

What makes this the best hotel in Zanzibar for a honeymoon filled with seaside luxury.

This 5-star property boasts excellent service, plenty of space to lay out by the pool and relax, and comfortable and elegant rooms.

Try to book the Luxury Suite with Sea View, and spend your evenings relaxing on the loveseat or unwinding in the in-room jacuzzi . You can reflect on everything you love about each other and this wonderful African honeymoon destination from one of our favorite luxury resorts.

Kilindi Zanzibar

Kilindi, Tanzania

Best for Honeymoon Packages in Zanzibar

Kilindi Zanzibar

It’s more than likely you had an ABBA song playing at your wedding – and we’re here for that. But how about staying at a resort originally designed for one of the pop sensation’s members?

When you see the stylish pavilions that inhabit over 50 acres of garden paradise at Kilindi Zanzibar , you’ll instantly consider it among the best honeymoon hotels in Zanzibar.

The rooms here are spectacular and feature rain-style showers, gorgeous views of the ocean, and private plunge pools.

If you want to turn the romance up even more (it is your honeymoon, after all) how about an excellent Zanzibar honeymoon package that will romance you with a candlelight dinner, discounted room rates, and a champagne toast under the star-studded Zanzibar Sky?

Tembo House Hotel

Zanzibar City

Best for an Affordable and Romantic Zanzibar Honeymoon

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

Romance sometimes has a steep price tag, but the Tembo House Hotel proves that the best place to stay in Zanzibar for a honeymoon can be quite affordable.

What makes this one of our favorite Zanzibar honeymoon hotels? Just about everything. The location is central to much of which makes Zanzibar City unique – allowing you to walk to iconic sites like Old Fort.

But the hotel grounds have some magic of their own. The long-standing hotel is charming, funky, and welcoming, with an excellent pool and restaurant on site.

The rooms are cozy but make up for the lack of space with unique design and all the amenities you come to expect, like a wake-up service, coffee maker, and flat-screen TV.

SeVi Boutique Hotel

Best for a Honeymoon Zanzibar Beach Resort

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

Zanzibar is one of our favorite beach honeymoon destinations, so it makes perfect sense that while you’re here, you’ll want to stay, well… by the beach.

The SeVi Boutique Hotel is located on the northeastern side of Zanzibar and is where to book in Zanzibar for a honeymoon by the beach.

You’re steps away from white sands and sparkling blue waters where you can swim, sunbathe, snorkel, or fish.

Hungry? The hotel’s restaurant serves a menu focusing on local ingredients, including freshly caught fish.

Reserve the Bungalow Water Front, and you’ll get a romantic villa overlooking the water with a beautiful interior that doesn’t get any more romantic. A canopy bed with lofted ceilings, rustic hardwood furniture, windows, and support beams will transport you back in time on your romantic Zanzibar honeymoon.

Zanzibar Honeymoon Tips: What You Need to Know

How to get to zanzibar .

Zanzibar is typically reached by plane or ferry. If you fly, you’ll land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ).

The Best Zanzibar Honeymoon Destinations

Stone town .

Stone Town Zanzibar

Stone Town is a destination you truly can’t miss when planning a honeymoon in Zanzibar. In fact, you’re going to want more than one day to visit this bustling Zanzibar honeymoon hot spot.

The ancient village lives and breathes its history through the narrow streets, centuries-old buildings, and vibrant marketplace.

So what should you do on your Zanzibar honeymoon in Stone Town? For starters, just walk. Really, you’ll want to travel by foot and take in the incredible town the way the locals do.

Shop at the many boutique stores, hike up to Old Fort to see a 17th-century relic, and be absolutely certain you stop by a local market to try some street food. You won’t be disappointed.

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park Zanzibar

If you want to experience jungles and wildlife, you’ll want to head to one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in Zanzibar at Jozani. Here you’ll see the unique Red Colobus rainforest and abundant wildlife that’s among the best on the island.

You’ll find Sykes monkeys, butterflies, galagos, and hyrax among the many adorable animals on your walk through the park.

Make sure you hire a tour guide when you visit the park, as tourists are forbidden to travel without one.

Changuu Island

Changuu Island Zanzibar

Also known as Prison Island, Changuu Island is a place you’ll want to visit on your Zanzibar honeymoon.

If you’re interested in Zanzibar’s beaches, you’re in the right place. You can only access the island by boat – which means that the beach is less crowded than other popular locations.

The water is clear, snorkeling is splendid, and you’ll find some pretty intact coral here, too.

Another highlight of Changuu Island is the Tortoise Sanctuary, which is a fantastic way to meet giant turtles up close and personal.

Cheetah’s Rock

Want to combine a safari and a Zanzibar honeymoon?

We love the idea of booking a safari honeymoon and extending your stay to visit the beautiful island afterward. And if you haven’t gotten enough animal photos for the ‘Gram – check out Cheetah’s Rock.

You can meet cheetahs, hyenas, and Chaka, the Zebra Stallion.

Fuerte Viejo de Zanzibar

Fuerte Viejo de Zanzibar

Fuerte Viejo de Zanzibar, or Old Fort, is a destination in Stone Town worthy of its place on any list of things to do in Zanzibar on a honeymoon.

What makes it special? The castle-like building is hundreds of years old, features a beautiful amphitheater, and serves as the location for local vendors selling their handmade wares.

You’ll also have a great look at the city and sea below – putting everything into perspective on your honeymoon in Zanzibar.

Kendwa Beach

Kendwa Beach Zanzibar

Trust us when we say that you’ll want to take advantage of Kendwa Beach on the island’s north side.

Why is this a Zanzibar honeymoon idea you won’t want to miss? The clear blue water and soft sands make it a famous spot to swim and snorkel. Plus the vibrant area is sprawling with brilliant places to dine.

The Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Is Zanzibar a good honeymoon destination year-round? For the most part, it is.

You can experience beautiful weather and warm temperatures at almost any time of the year on a Zanzibar honeymoon. You may want to skip a trip in the springtime, however, as March to May can have frequent rain showers.

How Long to Spend on Your Zanzibar Honeymoon

Whether you’ve planned a Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoon or spent your whole trip in Zanzibar, how long do you need to experience this archipelago fully?

To enjoy the best of your Zanzibar honeymoon resort, do some epic hiking, and explore the cultural epicenter of Stone Town, you will want at least one week on your Zanzibar honeymoon.

How Much Does a Zanzibar Honeymoon Cost?

On average, a honeymoon in Zanzibar costs between $3,000-$5,000.

You’ll definitely end up spending more if you want to see more of Tanzania – and we recommend seeing both if you’re already traveling long distances.

Tanzania and Zanzibar Honeymoon

Our guide to the best of romantic tanzania and zanzibar.

Itinerary photo - Safari

There is no doubt that, when you talk to most people, the subject of safari occurs most often when thinking about a honeymoon. Due to the increased costs involved, as well as the time that it takes to fly around Tanzania, it makes sense that almost 60% of visitors that come are on a luxury Tanzania honeymoon package. With this in mind, and given our experience with Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoons, we have put together a bit of a check list as well as a few thoughts as to where it is best to take into consideration.

The little extras!

Please also note that, having been putting together luxury Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoons for over ten years, we have a wealth of experience in making your honeymoon of a lifetime as exceptional as possible. We have preferred rooms in every hotel for our clients, as well as a few little extras on the route to make things just that bit more memorable! The best way for us to get your ideal luxury Tanzania and Zanzibar honeymoon is to have a chat or come in for a presentation! (we do work weekends!!)

Tanzania Honeymoon List

Many of our Tanzania honeymoon clients would like their Tanzania safari to be as special as they can possibly make it. Along with carefully sitting down and working out the perfect honeymoon itinerary for our clients, the subject of budget does come to the fore...and we would like to help! Recently we started to work with a specialist honeymoon list company called " Buy Our Honeymoon ". Unlike many of the honeymoon list companies out there, they work on a single payment process where you pay a one off set up fee of around £30 (discounted for our clients), you can have your own Paypal account for your guests to pay directly in to, and you will also have a fully functioning web page that guests can go to and see your itinerary along with buying any of the options through the site. For further information on this please ask your consultant.

Time of year...

In the main, the dry season months between June and October are ideal for a Tanzania honeymoon safari as you have the benefit of great weather, and also the congregation of the game around the watering holes. For many on a Tanzania honeymoon, they won't have time to be able to sit around waiting for game so this period is ideal.

Outside of this period, it can be a little trickier...but it can also be a lot less busy and also less expensive as the lodges and hotels have less business. Take a look at our Tanzania "when to travel" guide to see when you are looking to go on your honeymoon and where we recommend.

Take a look at: When to go

How long on safari...

For most, a Tanzania honeymoon safari of around 6 nights is the maximum that they will consider, while others prefer just a few nights in the bush and the rest on a beach somewhere.

The reason that this is significant is that, with the simple logistics of the northern parks not allowing for anything less than 4 nights, many looking to go on a Tanzania honeymoon need to look to the southern safari parks of the Selous and Ruaha....unlike the north, which is far busier and more crowded, the southern parks are fly-in, have much smaller properties and offer an altogether more intimate experience. In our view, the southern parks are perfect for a quiet and memorable Tanzania honeymoon.

The budget...

There is no doubt that, in preparing a Tanzania honeymoon, this is the factor that underlies everything. There are certain threshold costs that exist in a honeymoon itinerary. As with the northern parks, there is a certain cost involved in flying around, or staying longer on safari.

However, for those with higher budgets, Tanzania really offers a few of the world's most unbelievable sights and sounds. On top of the famous draws, there are some truly hidden gems that, in a lifetime of exploring, many never get a chance to witness.

Where to stay...

Where to stay on your honeymoon can really affect how you come away from the entire experience. More importantly, it is also worth bearing in mind which order you stay in. If you start with the best and move down, then you will be disappointed...if you finish there it will make the entire trip!

One of the reasons that Tanzania is an exceptional destination for safari is, without doubt, that it is also one of the only African countries to be able to offer world class beaches within an hour's flight of some of the world's best safari. Below we have also recommended a few of the top Zanzibar honeymoon spots to take a look at.

In our hotel section, we have highlighted a few lodges that are well worth taking a look at, all offering the best service and little extras throughout to make things extra special! Certainly, it is best to have a chat with one of our consultants through your likes and dislikes and we can then tailor a Tanzania honeymoon directly what will suite you best.

The Serengeti is one of the world’s most famous national parks, annually hosting the Great Migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra who follow the grass to and from the neighbouring Maasai Mara in Kenya, as well as an incredible variety of wildlife which is resident year-round. Based at of one of our favourite camps, with only canvas between you and the wilderness, you’ll explore these epic landscapes on game drives in search of lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and more, walk with the elegant Maasai and enjoy some of Africa’s most unforgettable sunsets.

The interiors have been designed with careful chosen natural linens and textiles to create a relaxing retreat that blends perfectly into the surroundings. Natural linens and textiles

Rustic and authentic, embark on expertly led daily game drives within one of the most consistent wildlife areas of the Serengeti. Here, rolling savannahs appear endless with acacia trees punctuating the landscapes. Mila’s privileged position in the western corridor means wildlife viewing is exceptional throughout the year.

Visiting this stunning area gives you direct access to hot air balloon safaris. Silently soar about prides of lions or herds of buffalo for a privileged glimpse into their world.

Open lounge of luxury safari camp Wilderness Usawa with sunlight and sofas, Serengeti National Park Tanzania

  • Six solar-powered and mobile tents
  • Indulge on a sustainable and fresh menu
  • Embark on morning game drives to spot the grazing herds
  • Take part in a guided walk to spot details of the Serengeti that are easily missed
  • Learn about the birds of the region with a knowledgeable guide on a birding walk
  • Treasure a private safari with your close friends and family

Deep in the Serengeti National Park is where you’ll find Wilderness Usawa Camp, a mobile camp that follows the wildebeest migration . The location of the camp shifts as the migration progresses, with a preference for sites that offer easy access to key highlights, like river crossings, but that are also set apart from the more crowded spaces offering you a sense of privacy. Attention is also paid to the game-viewing experience in general when selecting camp locations from month to month.

Wilderness Usawa Camp accommodates 12 guests in six spacious en-suite tents. These are solar-powered and completely mobile so no fixtures are left behind, meaning only a light footprint is left on the Earth. During your stay you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a locally sourced and grown gourmet menu, which supports the surrounding communities, small businesses, farms and suppliers in Tanzania due to how the camp reduces food waste through its creative preparation methods.

As the seasonal migration moves throughout the year across the expanse of the park, the camps will be in rotation around the key locations closest to the herds. Though reasonably predictable, herd movements are dictated by rain and tend to migrate from the south in a north-westerly direction before making their way up north around September. From there, the journey begins back to the south. Locations include Kusini, Moru West Area, Ngarenanyuki/Gol Kopje area, Kilimafetha area, Grumeti, Bologonja and Lamai. The wildlife you’ll be able to spot include Thomson’s gazeles, Wildebeests and lions.

Activities to take part in during your adventure with Wilderness Usawa Camp consist of early morning game drives, during which you can watch as the sun’s rays seep across the Serengeti’s savannah,  along with guided walks across the plains. You can also settle back against a blanket under the night sky and watch as the stars shimmer above this African haven.

The impact of your stay:

  • Lemala Kuria Hills have spearheaded an innovative anti-plastic pollution initiative in Tanzania. Their approach involves conscious alternatives to plastic and a meticulous recycling and upcycling system. They provide guests with 100% biodegradable and plastic-free lunch boxes. To date, they have removed over 100 tons of plastic from parks in Tanzania and crafted recycled school desks donated to local schools. Water purification plants in their lodges have saved over 18,000 plastic bottles, and glass bottles are recycled into water decanters, jewellery, glassware, and more.
  • The camp demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability in its construction. Thirty percent of the steel used in Lemala Lodges is recycled from scrap metal. The lodge operates 100% off the grid, utilising renewable energy and producing zero emissions and fuel usage, except in the rare case of generator backup.
  • The lodges play a crucial role in supporting various community empowerment initiatives, including one addressing sanitary pad poverty prevalent in Maasai communities with limited access to such items. The project has distributed over 3000 reusable pads to young Maasai girls in remote schools, locally produced by the NGO Women’s Group, Upendo Women’s Foundation in Arusha.

Four nights of romance on Zanzibar

Zanzibar is the place to relax on palm-fringed beaches and switch off from the world as dhows sail silently by, enjoying a genuine Indian Ocean paradise where life slows right down to an East African rhythm. With four nights here, there’s plenty of time to soak up the stunning desert-island scenery – powder-white sands fringed by emerald palms and twisted mangroves – and swim in the shallow turquoise seas bedded with rainbow coral reefs. The air is scented with cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg and there’s a rich cultural past and history of spice traders from India and Indonesia.

Zanzibar Island

xanadu-villas Zanzibar

Positioned in the Michamvi Peninsula, the southeast corner of Zanzibar, Xanadu Villas offer an intimate retreat for those looking to luxuriate in style. The powder white sand of Bwejuu beach is also just moments from the property.

In total, there are seven individual villas surrounding a makuti-thatched central pool, complete with lush tropical gardens and palm trees. Uuniquely, each villa comes with its own private butler, reachable by radio who can assist with your every need. The domed villas also include a private plunge pool and decor that nods to Zanzibar’s Arab history and influence on this spice island. Expect copper trays and lamps, African art, comfy sofas and spacious circular rooms with high ceilings. Each villa is set just metres away from the beach and the warm currents of the Indian Ocean.

The property itself features a swimming pool and bar at its heart, which is lit up by lantern at night. It’s here you can cosy up on a two-person hammock and watch the stars. The on-site restaurant offers exceptional cuisine, specialising in seafood and local delicacies. The area around Michamvi Peninsula is well known for its windsurfing conditions  and watersports. So guests can experience kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling with ease. However, for anyone looking to wind down, the on-site spa offers pampering treatments using locally sourced products.

Eleven private and spacious villas are spread across four acres, promising complete beachside intimacy. Each villa boasts lots of lavish touches, from private pools and terraces to an outdoor bath and shower, to idyllic sea and tropical garden views.

Then, feast on scrumptious seafood at the fine dining restaurant and head up to the rooftop bar for awesome sunset views.

What’s more, White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa supports its environment and local community with investment in renewable energy and community projects.

Situated in the north of Zanzibar at Kendwa with direct access to a private beach, Zuri Zanzibar is a brand new luxurious seaside property. One of the things setting it apart from other resorts is the fact that its pristine beach isn’t tidal, so guests can swim all day in the stunning azure sea.

There are 55 stand-alone bungalows, suites and villas designed to blend seamlessly with the spectacularly landscaped spice gardens, offering plenty of private areas to fully relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Zuri, on the whole, focuses on sustainability, individuality and authenticity.

Three restaurants and four bars mean dining and socialising is varied. You can even spice things up with a beach barbecue, or opt for a more intimate dinner on the shore. And if you’re inspired by the delicious food served at Zuri, there are cooking classes available so you can recreate the experience once you get home. Guests can also make use of the wellness area, gym and yoga centre, or pamper themselves with relaxing treatments at the spa.

Zuri is perfectly placed for exploring Kendwa and Nungwi, and there are a variety of other restaurants within walking distance along the beach.

mnemba-island-zanzibar

Mnemba, a small island 4.5 kilometres off the north-eastern coast of Zanzibar, is heaven incarnate. Which makes Mnemba Lodge this nirvana’s only resident hotel and a true desert island escape. The lodge is actively involved in various conservation efforts in the region, including monitoring and protecting the small population of very rare Ader’s duikers found here, and carefully taking care of the coastline and ocean.

Ten luxury Zanzabari banda houses are hidden into the island’s Casuarina pine forest whose cooing wild doves and adorable Suni deer make it a very romantic Swiss Robinson world. Each of the bandas are designed to let as much of the outside in with an open plan set out, walls made of coconut matting rolled up to reveal Indian Ocean views, big beds and sofas dressed in plumped-up white linens, handmade furniture, a dressing room, private verandas and an en-suite bathroom. What’s more, apart from the deer and doves the only other people you share the island with are the other guests and staff.

The lodge has enchanted a string of impressive guests from royalty to Silicone Valley tycoons, and it isn’t hard to see why. Dinner is always served on the beach (weather permitting) and both the food and staff are magnificent. Also if you’re afraid you’ll get bored on Mnemba, there’s always the lodge’s good list of activities to sway you: choose from learning how to dive with the lodge’s instructors, to watching turtles nest, fly fishing or kayaking.

Tanzania Honeymoon Safaris

Tanzania is the perfect country for a honeymoon safari. The well-established tourism industry is used to catering for all kinds of special occasions, including honeymoons. Service is almost invariably personable, and you’ll be made to feel at home wherever you go. Many lodges have magnificent settings, and are ideal for a romantic holiday. Newlyweds can enjoy active days getting close to nature and seeing wildlife. But there are also romantic touches. Sundowner drinks while watching the deep-red African sunset, candlelit dinners in the bush, or listening to the birds serenading a new day at dawn. I can’t think of a better way to start your married life together than sharing the very special moments a safari always offers.

5 Questions About Tanzania Honeymoon Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

Is a Tanzanian safari suitable for a honeymoon?

“Yes, a Tanzanian safari is most definitely suitable for a honeymoon. A honeymoon doesn’t need to be a specific type of trip. It should be the kind of holiday you want to share with the person you love. Has going on a safari been a longtime dream for you? Why not combine a once-in-a-lifetime trip with one of the most important events of your life, your wedding? Many of the lodges offer rustic luxury with impeccable service and great food; perfect to wind down after a busy day in the bush. A Tanzanian honeymoon safari is easily tagged onto a beach holiday, too (or the other way around). So, if you need some real relaxation after the stressful build-up of the wedding, this can be arranged as well. Great beach add-on destinations in Tanzania for honeymoon couples include Zanzibar Island and lesser-known Mafia and Pemba Islands.”

Which lodges in Tanzania are recommended for a honeymoon?

“All Tanzanian lodges will make an effort to make your honeymoon special, but it’s the smaller and more exclusive lodges that usually go the extra mile, so these are recommended. They already give more personalized service, so making special arrangements for a honeymoon couple is just an extension of what they are used to doing. Tanzanians love to spoil you when you least expect it. Just go with the flow and don’t ask too many questions; you don’t want to uncover an elaborate surprise. Tanzania is a popular honeymoon destination. The African bush, with its raw beauty, is the perfect romantic environment for outdoorsy newlyweds. Many of Africa’s most-stunning lodges are in Tanzania. Some have lavish suites with magnificent views, making them perfect to spend precious time together. Not surprisingly, many Tanzanian safari lodges cater specifically to honeymoon couples. You might be spoiled with a honeymoon suite, a private dinner under the stars, and/or a spa treatment for two.”

Are there special honeymoon packages in Tanzania?

“There are many special honeymoon packages in Tanzania. Operators will put these tours together using their knowledge of the lodges and parks to specifically cater to honeymoon couples. Every lodge is chosen carefully. It might have an amazing view, a special honeymoon suite, an infinity pool, or a private plunge pool. The setting should be romantic and the service personable. You’ll get a lot of private time; maybe a breakfast on your deck or a special candlelit dinner. Most honeymoon packages will combine a safari with some romantic relaxation on one of Zanzibar’s legendary beaches. Here, you can take long walks on the beach, sail in traditional dhows (traditional sailing vessels), and eat lots of seafood and fresh fruit. You can also swim in warm water, and spend time together without the distractions of everyday life.”

How many days are ideal for a Tanzanian honeymoon safari?

“At least 8 to 10 days are ideal for a Tanzanian honeymoon safari. Getting married can be quite hectic. Preparing a wedding involves a long list of decisions: the venue, the cake, the dress, the guest list… When planning a honeymoon, it’s best to leave it all in the capable hands of a reputable operator, and not get too bogged down in the decision-making and choices. A honeymoon should allow you to unwind and spend time together. The Tanzanian parks are perfect for this. Nature has a relaxing influence on people. However, a safari itinerary can be jam-packed. Never try to cram too much into any given day. Make sure you have some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful lodges and surroundings, as well as the game drives. For this reason, it makes sense to ensure you have a few extra days. You’ll be able to have some free time on an 8- to 10-day safari, and longer is even better.”

Will we get some alone time on our honeymoon trip?

“Even though a Tanzanian safari is quite an active holiday, you should definitely get some alone time on a honeymoon. I would recommend booking a private safari. Aside from the fact that you’ll spend more time alone together, your trip will be more flexible too. Most safaris offer the option of daily morning and afternoon game drives, but when you’re based at one lodge for a few days, don’t be shy to skip the odd game drive. The lodges are often in magnificent locations, perhaps overlooking a river or a waterhole. Animals may come past, or there might be small animals like hyrax or monkeys in the lodge grounds. So long as it doesn’t interfere with days when you move between lodges, take the occasional morning off. Sleep in, have a private breakfast, and spend some time together on your balcony.”

IN REMOTE NATIONAL PARKS AND AT WHITE SANDY BEACHES

With one-third of Tanzania’s land dedicated to conservation, you can choose from a number different destinations for your honeymoon experience – all special in their own right. From remote tropical rainforests teeming with butterflies to vast and wide savannahs dotted with Acacia trees. The Zanzibar archipelago is home to stunning beaches – lounge on a sunbed or embark on water sports activities. In Tanzania, you can expect an exceptional safari and beach retreat.

You can visit Tanzania all year round, but there are some important things to consider. Tanzania does not experience summer and winter. Instead, it has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The main dry season occurs from June to October. Importantly, it is the period with the best weather for a safari and a beach break. However, it is also the busiest time of the year – book early or venture off the beaten track to more secluded areas instead.

Couple and guide at West Kilimanjaro

June to late October Best for great weather and wildlife viewing

Tanzania’s main dry season is the ideal time to plan a honeymoon to Tanzania. The weather is not too hot and there is little to no chance of rain. Additionally, humidity levels are low during the day, making it comfortable. This extended dry period attracts wildlife to water sources and the vegetation is not as dense, allowing for easier wildlife viewing. The short dry season in January and February is also an excellent time to visit Zanzibar, with fantastic diving conditions. Be aware that it can get quite busy in the Northern Circuit parks as well as on Zanzibar during this time. For a more secluded experience, travel during the shoulder or low season or choose less visited parks.

Lion paws

Green Season

March to May Ideal for experiencing parts of popular parks with fewer people

March to May marks the season of the long rains in Tanzania. The South-East Trade Winds are responsible for this phenomenon, carrying moisture from the Indian Ocean inland. The short rains between November and December are typically less predictable. Afternoon rain showers are common during the short rains, but they are unlikely to affect your honeymoon. Both the long and short rainy periods transform Tanzania’s landscapes into lush greenery. While game viewing may not as easy as during the dry season, you will have a more exclusive experience with fewer other visitors.

How to experience your Tanzania honeymoon safari

It’s best to be guided by knowledgeable and skilled Tanzanians in specially adapted 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers. Depending on your budget, you can opt for an intimate group safari, a private safari, or a fly-in safari that takes you to secluded destinations. We have compared a fly-in safari versus a driving safari on our Getting to Tanzania page.

When visiting the national parks in Tanzania, it’s important to note that there are hardly and signs to guide you in the right direction, making navigation quite challenging. Additionally, parks can be quite far apart and driving styles may be unfamiliar. For these reasons, we generally do not recommended to embark on a private self-driving safari.

When deciding on where to go, you have the option of exploring the northern, southern, and western circuits. While parts of the northern circuit may be busy from June to October, the southern and western circuits still offer secluded options.

How to experience your Zanzibar honeymoon

When planning a honeymoon to Tanzania, it is more than convenient to conclude a safari with a visit to the tropical beaches of Zanzibar. This archipelago, situated only 35 km from Tanzania’s coast, comprises over 50 islands and is a captivating semi-autonomous region. Its location has been hotly disputed for centuries, making it an excellent destination for those interested in exploring its rich cultural heritage.

The three main islands, Unguja (commonly known as Zanzibar), Pemba, and Mafia, all have amazing beaches and accommodations. Let one of our country experts assist you in finding the perfect place to stay.

Typically, following a final scrumptious breakfast in the bush, you will board a small plane to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome and be taken to your beach retreat where you can enjoy the barefoot luxury life.

Whether you want to swim in the Indian Ocean, explore the reef on a boat ride, dive with whale sharks, or simply unwind on pristine white sand, the opportunities are endless.

How to plan your Tanzania honeymoon package

Planning a special event requires attention to both small and large details. You’ve worked hard to ensure that every aspect of your ceremony is perfect, and you deserve to enjoy your honeymoon without worrying about last-minute travel arrangements. That’s why we recommend reaching out to one of our passionate travel experts, who can take care of the hard work for you. Simply provide them with a brief overview or list of your desired honeymoon, and they’ll tailor it specifically to you as a couple. Our experts will be with you every step of the way, from planning to the end of your trip.

What to see and do on romantic getaways in Tanzania

A honeymoon is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some of the most unforgettable experiences of your life, and Tanzania is fortunate enough to offer an abundance of unique and memorable experiences.

A Guided Safari

There are various types of guided safaris, such as group, private, and fly-in safaris, each with its unique features. However, one thing that is consistent across all our safaris is exceptional wildlife viewing.

A Fly-in Safari

For a truly unforgettable honeymoon, consider a fly-in safari. Why spend your precious time driving in a 4×4 between parks when you can fly into remote, beautiful and rarely visited regions of Tanzania? Stay in luxurious accommodations and experience the wonder of Tanzania’s wildlife and secluded landscapes.

A Balloon Safari

The name does not do justice to this experience. Arrive before the break of dawn to climb into a basket and be warmed by the burners. As you rise over the plains you watch the sunrise over Africa. With the burners off you drift silently over incredible landscapes to watch the wildlife below. It is a magical experience.

A Private Bush Supper

A table for two under countless stars and surrounded by only the sounds of nature has to be the most romantic dinner on the planet. Amazing food in the middle of nowhere will also make your tastebuds very happy.

Coastal Experiences

Zanzibar offers a variety of activities such as relaxing, snorkelling on the coral reef via boat, participating in a half-day spice tour, touring conservation areas, exploring the historic Stone Town, and scuba diving.

The Serengeti is one of the world’s most famous National Parks, annually hosting the Great Migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra who follow the grass to and from the neighboring Maasai Mara in Kenya , as well as an incredible variety of wildlife which is resident year-round. At 14,750 square kilometers (5,700 square miles), roughly the same size as Connecticut, its name derives from the Maasai stringent which means ‘the place where the land runs on forever, an apt way to describe its panoramic savannah plains which stretch to the horizon. Dotted with umbrella acacia and baobabs, wandering giraffe, dozing lion pride, lumbering elephant herds, and cheetahs on the lookout from atop termite mounds, it is the quintessential East African landscape.

Zanzibar is the place to relax on palm-fringed beaches and white sifted sands and switch off from the world, a genuine Indian Ocean paradise where life slows right down to an East African rhythm. Certainly, its most potent allure is some of the most stunning of desert island scenery – powder white sands, fringed by emerald palms, twisted mangroves, and shallow turquoise seas bedded with rainbow coral reefs. However, there’s a lot more to its postcard appeal. The air is still scented with cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg that are still cultivated here and it has a rich cultural past and history colored with Arabian settlers and spice traders from India and Indonesia, Zanzibar was a significant crossroads for world cultures and commerce.

Begin planning your Zanzibar Honeymoon

For many people, a combination of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar makes for the ideal honeymoon. Tanzania is a truly exotic and little-visited country, where outstanding game viewing can easily be combined with some laid-back luxury on a picture-postcard beach in Zanzibar. As a company we favour small, boutique accommodation rather than large corporate hotels. We think this is especially important for a honeymoon in order to have an intimate and unique trip. Luckily, it just so happens that this is Zanzibar’s speciality.

Begin planning your Zanzibar Honeymoon

Where to stay on your Zanzibar Honeymoon

Zanzibar Archipelago encompasses the main Zanzibar Island and the private Fanjove and Mnemba Islands, as well as the untouched Pemba Island. Most people flock to Zanzibar Island , as it has great beaches and excellent accommodation options. Pemba is less visited as there are only two good hotels, but also the beaches are not very good which makes it a less attractive option. Fanjove and Mnemba are exclusively visited by guests in only one lodge on each island, making them exceptional options for honeymooners seeking a more private experience.    On Zanzibar, Xanadu offers a leafy and intimate private getaway. The 12 villas are beautiful and Xanadu prides itself on a Michelin standard menu making it a popular choice for foodies... Oh and the private villas and personal butlers means it is fairly luxurious!    Zuri Zanzibar boasts a cool, quirky vibe and is made up of 55 suites scattered around a tropical garden. The huge perk of Zuri is that it has by far the most beautiful beach on Zanzibar Island. This, coupled with its reasonable price tag and luxurious rooms makes it the best option for many honeymooners.     Fanjove Private Island is an Indian Ocean treasure. The tiny island is a pristine beach paradise with crystal clear waters and powdery white sand. The accommodation is fairly beach shack chic rustic, so Fanjove caters more for those who appreciate a private, off the beaten track special experience as opposed to five-star luxury facilities.  Pongwe is our favourite best value honeymoon paradise. The Seaview suites have a private pool, and even if you do not go all out for one of these (which is only marginally more expensive than the standard room!), all categories are spacious and authentic. The main area is quirky, with a fun atmosphere and excellent Zanzibari food.

Safari and Zanzibar Honeymoon Packages

Zanzibar beach honeymoons are so easy to combine with a Tanzanian safari, it is almost impossible to resist. For the super adventurous, you can even climb Kilimanjaro on your special week - quite the honeymoon story! Alternatively, you can do range of different itineraries, all ending (or beginning… or both!) in Zanzibar.   One option is to see Tanzania's famous northern parks; the mighty and beautiful Ngorongoro Crater and the iconic Serengeti . Plan your Serengeti itinerary carefully and you may be lucky enough to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration . From these parks there are a network of internal flights which can get you from safari to beach within a few hours.    Alternatively, southern Tanzania provides huge safari variety; you can enjoy walking safaris, fly camping, boating and even some of the best chimpanzee viewing in the whole of Africa in the wild south-west. Most people do not venture to the west, but stick to either the watery Selous or baobab-studded Ruaha as they are far less expensive to access and offer extremelly wild and authentic safaris.    You can also easily combine Kenya with your Zanzibar beach honeymoon... Yet more choices! It is a good idea to chat to an expert to find out what the best combination is for you though, as our consultants have visited everywhere so can give you fantastic insight.

How much does a Zanzibar honeymoon cost?

The beauty of Zanzibar holidays is that the prices of accommodation are well and truly wide ranging... You can enjoy a splash of luxury for around $140 per person per night, or full on Indian Ocean private tranquillity for $600 per person per night. The choice is well and truly yours!    You can also go for an even more lavish and completely exclusive retreat with the magical Mnemba Island, off the coast of Zanzibar. Mnemba's less refined but no less magical alternative is Fanjove - a nice addition to a Zanzibar honeymoon if you are after a lot of beach time relaxation.  Introducing Odyssey Explorer   Welcome to our new itinerary-building app! Odyssey Explorer allows you to browse a range of popular itinerary templates and tailor them to suit your budget and tastes. Once you are happy with your route template, Odyssey Explorer gives you the freedom to select and change your accommodation in each destination. It is an excellent tool for you to get an instant price for your dream trip before you work with a Tanzania expert to fine-tune it and make it into a reality.

Zanzibar Honeymoon Activities

Whether you are after snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing, a sedate sunset dhow cruise, educational spice tours, or even colobus monkey spotting in Jozani forest -  Zanzibar has a whole host of activities for you to enjoy in between relaxing on its dreamy beaches.    Stone Town , Zanzibar’s rickety capital is a must-see for those interested in local culture, the history of the island or want to do a bit of bartering on some Zanzibari goods. Stone Town is mismatched and chaotic, but it undoubtedly has bundles of character and we would recommend visiting at least for a day trip to see the real island outside the cosy confides of your beach hotel.    For foodies, Zanzibar will not disappoint. It has amazing fresh seafood as well as Arabic inspired dishes from delicious curries to spicy veggie nibbles. Spices are a big part of Zanzibar culture, so be sure to buy some and do some experimenting.

Zanzibar's Stone Town

Stone Town is the capital of Zanzibar and is a fascinating small town on the west coast of the island. It is brimming with the hustle and bustle of local life. Steeped in history, it is a captivating living monument to the curious mix of cultures of its East African, Arab, Indian, Persian and European conquerors, traders and seafarers.    Not to see Stone Town while you are in Zanzibar would be a real shame! We are in no doubt that the best way to get about Stone Town is with a private guide. Some say the best approach is to meander the streets, window shopping and absorbing the atmosphere...but that can also mean a day getting lost!    Hiring a guide will help you to make the most out of your time in Stone Town and protects you from being hassled. There are many fine buildings to visit including the House of Wonders, the Arab Fort, various ruined Sultan's Palaces, museums, the Forodhani Gardens and many more historical attractions.

Make your honeymoon special with Tanzania Odyssey

Our favourite spoiling honeymoon in Tanzania is to do beach-safari-beach. The reason we love it so much is that it gives you such variety (in two completely different beaches) with amazing safari in between. Also, if you do a shorter safari on your honeymoon your trip can be longer without breaking the bank! Beach hotels are far less expensive per night than safaris with park, vehicle, guide fees and so on, so spending more time here can mean the quality of your trip is better and longer for the money you pay.    Ask us about the best botique hotels on Zanzibar. We have carefully selected the best finds on the island, which offer a more intimate experience when compared to the big hotels (which can be rather soulless for such a romantic and special holiday!).    Explore the Indian Ocean! There is colourful marine life on your doorstep - if you are an active couple, then put the book down for a day and experience everything Zanzibar has to offer.

A Zanzibar honeymoon: why not? For those adventurous couples looking to honeymoon in an exotic location, the island of Zanzibar will provide a rich and romantic experience. Influenced by the spice trade as well as the culture and traditions brought here from the Portuguese, the Omani Arabs and the English, Zanzibar is a destination like no other.

Located off the coast of Tanzania , Zanzibar was an independent country until 1964 when it and several smaller islands became part of the United Republic of Tanzania. Tourism is a growing industry here, with efforts being made to attract visitors yearning to explore multiple cultures, diverse cuisine, pristine coral reefs, deep sea game fishing, or simply a chance to experience the allure of a Sultan’s ancient palace.

Magic and mystery intertwine in Zanzibar, along with the warm and generous spirit of its people. Through song, dance, and ritual — both ancient and modern — your heart and soul will be forever changed here.

About Zanzibar

Average cost of a one week zanzibar honeymoon.

Ah, Zanzibar – where pristine beaches meet rich history and vibrant culture. If you’re daydreaming about your romantic escape to this East African gem, it’s smart to get a glimpse of what your wallet might expect. Let’s take a breezy stroll through the average costs for a week-long Zanzibar honeymoon.

First things first, let’s talk airfare. On average, round-trip flights for two lovebirds can range from $1,200 to $1,800, depending on where you’re jetting in from. Snagging those deals in advance or keeping an eye out for travel sales can give your budget a gentle caress.

Accommodations

Now, let’s unpack where you’ll rest your heads. Zanzibar offers a range of accommodations, from cozy boutique hotels to luxurious beach resorts. For a romantic week, you might be looking at around $1,000 to $1,500 for your love nest. Of course, the view from your balcony and the sound of waves lapping the shore might make every penny feel like a sprinkle of stardust.

Daily Expenses

Ah, daily expenses – the delightful indulgences and exploration funds. Zanzibar is a place to savor local flavors and immerse in its beauty. Plan for approximately $100 to $150 per day for both of you. This includes scrumptious meals, transportation to explore Stone Town’s enchanting alleys, and a dash of island adventures.

Total costs on average

So, let’s tally it up, shall we? For a week of Zanzibar enchantment, you might be looking at an average of $2,300 to $3,450. Remember, these numbers are as flexible as palm trees swaying in the breeze. With some savvy planning, a sprinkle of budget mindfulness, and a dash of spontaneity, your Zanzibar honeymoon can be everything you’ve dreamed of and more.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

When it comes to planning the ideal time for your honeymoon, the weather is just one piece of the puzzle. Let’s uncover the best time to visit this East African paradise and explore other considerations for your Zanzibar honeymoon.

Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate that whispers sweet promises of warmth and sunshine year-round. The best time to visit, weather-wise, is during the dry seasons – from June to October and December to February. These months gift you with balmy temperatures, gentle breezes, and minimal rainfall, creating a canvas of perfection for your honeymoon memories.

Marine Life

If the underwater world tickles your adventurous spirit, consider timing your visit during the months of August to October and December to March . These are prime months for snorkeling and diving, as the waters are clear, calm, and teeming with marine life. Imagine sharing the magic of the ocean depths with your partner – a dance of colors that will linger in your hearts forever.

Zanzibar’s culture comes alive during its festivals and events. If you’re intrigued by the island’s traditions and vibrant spirit, consider planning your honeymoon around one of these celebrations. The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in July and the Mwaka Kogwa festival in July/August offer a glimpse into the local way of life, adding a sprinkle of cultural richness to your romantic escape.

While Zanzibar is a haven year-round, it’s wise to consider the ebb and flow of tourist crowds. The months of June to October and December to February tend to be busier, as travelers seek the idyllic weather. If you prefer a quieter ambiance, you might find April and November to be more serene, allowing you to immerse yourselves in the beauty of the island at a more leisurely pace.

Budget and Value

Another aspect to ponder is your budget and value. Prices for accommodations and activities can vary based on the season. Keep an eye out for travel deals and packages that align with your honeymoon dreams while keeping your budget in check.

About Honeymooning in Zanzibar

A Zanzibar honeymoon is an opportunity to immerse in its blend of culture, flavors, and sights. Here’s what you need to know:

Zanzibar’s culture is a fusion of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences, creating a vibrant and unique tapestry. Respect for local customs and traditions is key. A simple “Jambo” (hello) or “Asante” (thank you) accompanied by a smile can go a long way in fostering connections with the friendly locals. Take time to explore Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where narrow alleys lead to historic mosques, bustling bazaars, and architectural wonders that whisper tales of centuries gone by.

The local currency in Zanzibar is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). While some places accept major foreign currencies, it’s advisable to have some local currency on hand for smaller transactions. ATMs are available in urban areas, but it’s wise to carry cash for more remote locations. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and upscale establishments, but for a truly immersive experience, embrace the local currency for your shopping and dining adventures.

Prepare your taste buds for a culinary journey that will leave you craving for more. Zanzibar’s cuisine is a delightful blend of flavors, with a focus on seafood, tropical fruits, and aromatic spices. Indulge in dishes like “Urojo,” a flavorful soup with a mix of ingredients that reflects the island’s cultural diversity. Don’t miss out on “Zanzibar pizza,” a local street food that’s as delicious as it is unique. Seafood lovers will be in paradise, savoring freshly caught fish prepared with a tantalizing mix of spices.

Tips for a Romantic Dining

From casual beach spots to upscale venues, Zanzibar offers diverse dining. Candlelit beach dinners and Swahili-inspired dishes add a romantic touch.

As you embrace Zanzibar’s culture, handle currency, and savor local flavors, your honeymoon will be a blend of enriching experiences. Enjoy the charm of this island paradise!

Best Activities for a Zanzibar Honeymoon

Your Zanzibar honeymoon awaits, promising a spectrum of experiences that will color your journey with love and enchantment. Beyond the idyllic beaches and turquoise waters, here’s a closer look at the best activities:

1. Beach Bliss

Nungwi and Paje Beaches offer more than just sun and sand. They invite you to create a symphony of relaxation – from strolling hand in hand along the shoreline to sharing intimate picnics against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean’s shimmering canvas.

2. Spice Tours

November to December: A Dash of Rain

Short rainy season alert! But don’t worry, the rain dances are short-lived. Temperatures stay warm, and sunny days are still in the mix. A light rain jacket might come in handy, just in case.

March to May: Tropical Showers

The long rainy season arrives, treating the island to refreshing showers. While heavy rain is part of the package, don’t pack away your sunscreen – sunny intervals pop up too.

January to February: Heat and Humidity

Zanzibar turns up the heat! January and February bring the hottest days. It’s a touch humid, but a refreshing dip in the ocean is all you need. Stay hydrated and beach-ready.

Zanzibar Shines Year-Round

Rain or shine, Zanzibar’s allure never fades. So if you’re feeling like lazing on the sands, exploring Stone Town’s charms, or diving into vibrant coral reefs, the island’s tropical rhythm sets the stage for an unforgettable adventure.

Is Zanzibar Safe for a Honeymoon?

When it comes to your honeymoon, safety is a top priority. Here are some factors to consider when assessing the safety of your Zanzibar honeymoon:

1. Political Stability

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, and both regions generally maintain political stability. However, it’s wise to stay informed about any local developments or travel advisories before your trip.

2. Local Customs and Etiquette

Respect for local customs is essential. Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, and visitors are advised to dress modestly, especially when outside the tourist areas. Public displays of affection should be limited to ensure cultural sensitivity.

3. Health Precautions

Consult a healthcare professional before your trip to ensure you’re up to date on vaccinations and receive advice on any health precautions. Malaria is a concern in some areas, so taking appropriate measures, such as using mosquito repellent, is recommended.

4. Beach Safety: While Zanzibar’s beaches are stunning, it’s important to be aware of the ocean’s conditions. Some areas may have strong currents or tides, so always heed the guidance of local authorities and hotel staff when swimming.

5. Petty Crime: As with any travel destination, petty theft can occur. It’s advisable to keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying valuable items in public places. Use hotel safes and be cautious in crowded areas.

6. Tourist Areas vs. Rural Areas: Tourist areas in Zanzibar are generally safe for visitors. However, if you plan to explore rural or less frequented areas, it’s a good idea to go with a reputable tour operator or guide who knows the area well.

7. Transportation Safety: Choose reliable transportation options, especially when venturing beyond your hotel. Licensed taxis and reputable tour operators are safer choices.

8. Natural Considerations: Zanzibar’s natural beauty is captivating, but it’s essential to be mindful of wildlife and terrain. Avoid close contact with unfamiliar animals and follow guidelines during outdoor activities.

Honeymoon in Zanzibar: All You Need to Know About the Spice Island

By: Author Dan Bagby

Posted on Published: May 22, 2019

Just picture this! You walking hand in hand with your spouse as the sun kisses its reflection where the sky meets the Indian ocean waters. Enjoy the golden sun rays and the pristine white sandy beaches massages your bare feet. This is as you discuss the future ahead or just taking some rest from hectic wedding organization as you enjoy your honeymoon.

Karibu Zanzibar, that is just our way of saying welcome to Zanzibar. Karibu to our article about honeymooning in Zanzibar.

Where is Zanzibar

Zanzibar is found in East Africa and located on the Swahili Coast, in Indian Ocean adjacent to Tanganyika. Together with Tanganyika the two form Tanzania.

Zanzibar an archipelago of historic Indian Ocean islands. It is between 25 to 50 kilometers (About 6–31 miles) off the coast of the mainland.

The Island consists of many small islands with two large ones. They are Unguja which is the main island. This is the one that is informally referred to as Zanzibar. The other one to the north of Unguja is Pemba Island.

Zanzibar sailboat honeymoon sunset cruise

The capital Zanzibar City is located on the island of Unguja. The famous section of the capital is its historic center is Stone Town. This is a World Heritage Site and the birth place of Swahili.

Zanzibar is awash with great atmosphere, intrigue, and idyllic beach experiences. The Island is renowned for its spice plantations, hence the name the ‘Spice Islands’.

Why Go for Honeymoon in Zanzibar?

The name Zanzibar reminds us of spice markets, palm-fringed beaches and white-sailed dhows on a turquoise sea. The Spice Island has long been the star attraction of the Indian Ocean experience and a holiday here is a sensory experience par excellence.

Zanzibar Island is where every romantic couple will be spoilt for choice with its allure of magic, mystery, and blissful beauty.

A honeymoon in Zanzibar is a dream when you have your partner by your side as you admire the pristine crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters. Do not forget the pearl-white sand and swaying palm trees of the island. Zanzibar is the place dreams are made of.

Zanzibar is located near the Equator and as a result, enjoys a tropical climate. The island is hot all year round, with two rainy seasons. There are the long rains from March to May and the short rains between mid-October and December.

Average monthly sunhours in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Being a tropical climate, Zanzibar has ideal holiday weather all year round. The Island receives an average of about 7-hour sunshine daily. If you are looking for a super suntan skin, Zanzibar weather is just perfect and you will love it.

The Rich History

Zanzibar is a historical ‘monument’ in itself. The historical journey of the island dates back to the 11 th century with the establishment of Islam as a religion. The Portuguese influence in the 16 th century and the slave trade of the 17 th century have defined the history of Zanzibar. The British came in in the 17 and 18 th century and Zanzibar has never been the same.

This was the major slave market for the Arabs. It is where the first storied building was done in East Africa and home to the first lift.

The churches will remind you of the colonial exploration on the island. The mosques and Omani palaces including the old fort and cannons signifies the Sultan’s statehood presence.

The Swahili essence is represented by the intricately curved doors while the aromatic spicy tastes and smell takes us back to the Spice trade routes.

The ancient metropolis of Stone Town has preserved traces of most historical events that occurred in Zanzibar.

Unique Culture Mix

Zanzibar is an amazing cultural pot. The island has a mix of people that emerged from eras of trade relations with different countries. In Zanzibar has Africans, Arab, Indian, Persian and European influences that have taken root in copious chapters her history.

The cultural mixes can be seen on the Swahili Curved Doors, the architectural design of houses within and without the city. The eating habits and food cultures of the people and the music both traditional and modern.

Pristine White Sandy Beaches

Surely, Zanzibar is an Island of Pristine White Sandy Beaches. There are only few places in the world can rival her. Zanzibar combines white powdered sandy with pristine turquoise waters to offer one of the best beaches in the world.

beach with clear blue water in Zanzibar

The beaches are made more beautiful by the tropical palm-trees that line them. You just need a day bed or a hammock strung between two palm trees facing the turquoise Indian Ocean.

Just lie down and let the warm tropical sun peek down at you from gaps in the palm tree leaves. Enjoy the soft Indian Ocean breezes scented with the unique fragrance of the spices grown on the island.

The beaches are full of alluring freshness with sounds of the gentle waves twirling on the unbelievably white sands. You are here to enjoy the serene harmony that is Zanzibar.

Romantic Hotels and Resorts

Zanzibar is a romantic destination with equally world-class romantic beach hotels and resorts.  This is an amazing place with everything to do everything. From private beach cottages, exclusive all-inclusive resorts to small hotels lining the beaches perfect for a honeymoon.

What will determine where you will spend your night while on honeymoon in Zanzibar is your budget.

What to Do While on Honeymoon in Zanzibar

Here are top activities you can do while on honeymoon in Zanzibar

Prison Island Tour or Changuu Island

This is a historical journey and who is better placed to walk this journey with if not your partner? The Island was once a save for keeping slaves before they are shipped abroad.

It was later turned into a prison by the British first minister for Zanzibar in 1893. Lloyd Mathews built a prison complex despite it not receiving any prisoner. It was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever victims.

two giant tortoises

Currently it is a mesmerizing island that gives you an opportunity to escape into a magical world of peace and beauty.

The island is home to giant tortoises imported from Seychelles in 19th century, some of the tortoises are 100 years old. You can take a 30-minute long romantic and scenic boat ride from Zanzibar and spend the whole day exploring the ruins, sunbathing, and swimming etc.

Stone Town Tour

Looking at something that combines history, culture and gourmet experience? Your guess is as good as mine… Stone Town tour it is.

If you are looking for an exotic culture and food that is worthy of the awe-inspiring location Zanzibar island lives up to that billing through Stone Town.

safari and zanzibar honeymoon

Ancient culture is expressed within the streets of an atmospheric Stone Town. Here traders erect quaint stalls in the narrow streets and enthusiastic tailors hang outside the doorway of colorful fabric stores.

Art galleries, souvenirs and shining jewelry stores are around every corner. You will enjoy century old facades that evoke vivid images of Persian sailors marching through the streets.

A Stone Town tour is worthwhile as it gives you insight into the local culture. You get to enjoy local cuisines on the streets especially in the evening when local food vendors line up the streets. It is a sight and a taste to behold.

Nungwi Beach Tour

There is no perfect place for honeymoon in Zanzibar as the Nungwi Beach. The rustic beach is located in the quaint village of Nungwi and surrounded by palm trees.

It is an ideal place for trying scuba diving and snorkeling, as it hosts one of the best atolls in the world, Mnemba Atoll.

The marine park here is home to some of Indian Oceans well-kept secrets, the beautiful coral reefs. You may tour the locals just a short distance at the Nungwi village.

Kazi Mkazi – Swimming with the Dolphins

Why not add color to your honeymoon by diving deep into the ocean to swim with the dolphins? The

Kazimkazi area is known for diving with friendly and cute dolphins. The shallow coastal waters around the area attract dolphins and they usually come here for food, to rest, and yeah, socialize.

Dolphin tours on the island are popular amongst couples and dolphin lovers. This activity is best experienced early in the morning between 5:30 am to 6:00 am when the waters are cool.

Spice Farm Tour

The best way to spice up your honeymoon in Zanzibar is to visit the spice farms. It is because of spices that Zanzibar is often referred to as the ‘Spice Island’ so why not venture out to see, smell and taste.

Some of the spices here include cinnamon, chilies, nutmeg, black pepper, ginger, cloves, bulls’ heart, turmeric, lemon grass and many more.

Zanzibar spice market

On the tour you get to learn about the spices, their use including medicinal values and the requirements.

There are many more things to do in Zanzibar when on honeymoon. Above is just but a few.
