For first-timers, it is sometimes intimidating to apply for a US Tourist B1/B2 Visa. Hearing ‘denied’ stories from your friends and relatives may add to your worries too. You thought, “If they have been denied a US tourist visa, then what are the chances for me to get approved?”

My first tip for you, STOP being PESSIMISTIC. Stop attracting the negative vibes and start thinking that you have been approved already – even if your appointment is days or weeks from now. You know me, right? I believe in the Law of Attraction .

You see, when you keep on thinking that you will be denied, it will manifest during your interview. You will look nervous, your voice will crack, and the consul might feel that you are hiding something. That’s the perfect formula for a denied visa.

You wouldn’t want that. Would you?

Just so you know, aside from the documents required by the US embassy, it is also important that you know how to respond to the questions correctly. While it matters that your documents can prove that you will go back to your home country, you still need to have conviction during the interview proper.

To help you prepare for your visa application, here are some of the basic questions during a US B1/ B2 tourist visa consul interview. Always remember, NEVER LIE. They already did a background check on you when you applied online!

1. Why do you want to go to the USA?

Say you want to go on a tour and to see what the USA has to offer.  After all, you are applying for a US TOURIST visa so your answer should be as simple as that.

2.  Have you been to the USA before?

You might think that the best answer is YES, and you feel that this is your instant ticket for getting a visa. You are wrong! If you haven’t been to the US, don’t lie. Just be honest because lying will get you nowhere.

3. Why do you plan to travel at this time?

Simply answer that it is your most available time or it is your annual leave from work. If you have other reasons such as having enough savings recently for the trip, then tell the truth.

4. Who are you going with to the USA?

Are you going with your relatives or friends? Just make sure you know the basic information of the people you are going with. If you wanted to meet your American boyfriend who you met online and never met in person, I highly suggest you ask him to visit you in the Philippines first!

5.  Which places are you planning to visit?

It wouldn’t hurt to do research on the places you plan to visit before you go to your interview. Let me know if you need further help with this and I would be more than willing to help you. I suggest that you start with the spots near your accommodation because it is more feasible.

6. How long do you plan to stay in the USA?

Carefully study your itinerary and base your answer from there. Or if you are an employee, check your leave credits and talk to your Human Resources representative on your allowed leaves. If you can bring a form or letter during your interview stating your leave credits, that can help as well.

Remember, if you get an approved USA visa, you’ll surely get a 10-year multiple entry visit visa!

7. Can you stay for a shorter period of time?

Similar to the above, you can defend and defend your answer based on your itinerary. And if someone from the US will act as your ‘tour guide’, simply say that you need to adhere with their schedule as well. Hence, a need for a longer time to stay in the US.

8. How much do you think will it cost you to stay in the USA?

9. What do you do for a living?

Tell your job, your businesses, and other side jobs, if any. This will give the consul an idea if your employer is credible enough. Similarly, they need to know that you are established in your home country and that you are not going to the US for greener pasture. Here are few requirements to strengthen your claim that you will be back and will not look for job opportunities while on ‘vacation’.

• Certificate of Employment
• Proof of Income for the last 3 months
• Business permits
• Bank statements

Be prepared and bring these documents on your interview, most of the time the Consul won’t ask you to show the proof! For people who work online, I know that feeling of not having those Income Tax Return report etc. I highly suggest you print your income transactions on your Paypal account if you’re a writer or a designer then compile all of your online portfolios.

10. How much do you earn for a living?

Just tell the correct figures. After all, these can all be seen from the documents you have presented during your online application. And if they feel that it is not enough for your trip, might as well prepare for the next question.

11.  How will you finance your trip?

Show proof that you have saved if any. Or if you are going to be sponsored, get the information from your sponsors. Know what they do for a living and get necessary supporting documents like bank statements, job certificate, tax details etc.

12. Do you have relatives in the USA?

Never lie or deny this even if you won’t visit them on your trip, you must know their names and a few basic information including their status in the US. Sometimes, it would help if you have photos with you to further prove your claim.

13.  Do you have friends in the USA?

Similar to the above, know their names and also the basic information but if they’re not really significant to you then just say so.

14. What are their exact addresses?

Try to get their exact addresses before the interview. Don’t just say that they live in Los Angeles or in New York but rather, be specific. Review the information before you go to the interview and always come prepared especially if you mentioned about them on your online application.

15. (For visiting Relatives/ Friends)  How long have they been living in the USA and what are their current status?

I strongly encourage that you spend time chatting and interviewing your relatives and friends in the US if the purpose of your visit is to meet them. It will really help you to become more confident in front of the consul.

16.  (For visiting Relatives/ Friends)  Where are they working and what will you do during the office hours?

As I have said, get as much information because the consul would like to know if you are just making up stories. Expect to be bombarded with questions. The questions might be redundant but that’s how they will know if you are indeed telling the truth. And when asked what are your plans during the hours and days that your ‘sponsors’ are working, you can say that you are planning to go on short solo day trips near the area so that you can maximize your stay.

17.  Do you have plans of working in the USA?

HUGE NO, and never attempt to work in the US while you are there on a TOURIST VISA. Otherwise, you might get deported and will never see US soil once again. Never even mention that you’re looking for opportunities. NEVER EVER!

18. Have you already booked your plane tickets?

Look for possible booking dates and say that you are eyeing on those dates for your US trip. Have the flight details ready, if possible but don’t pay for the flights yet until you get your visa approved. The flight ticket is not a requirement!

19. Have you traveled to other countries before?

Be honest because they will know if you haven’t. Everything can be validated easily and they have the means to check if you are telling the truth. I always tell my travel coaching clients that it’s better if you get more passport entry stamp from any nearby countries especially those that are visa-free or visa-on-arrival for Philippines passport, you can check the list of those countries here .

20. How can you assure that you will come back home?

Show the letter from your employer, if you have any. If you have businesses that you currently take care of, explain it. Or, you can tell them that you don’t plan on ruining your travel records because you still plan to see more places in the future.

My general tip, BE PREPARED and NEVER LIE ! These consuls are trained to know if you are lying, so always have the best intentions if you are going to the USA. We want you to have clear records so you can travel the world without facing challenges in the future.

I only have distant relatives in the US na di ko rin close. I declared them, pero di ko alam address nila and wala rin akong ways to contact them, as i’ve said, di ko sila halos kilala. I only know the State where they are. So red flag ba to? Hirap rin kasi mag bigay ng address tapos baka di mag match sa pag verify nila edi mas lalong lagot. hehe

To follow up on this question of mine. I already got approved. So for this case, I just told the consul, “distant relatives”. Then he asked where are they and I just said Hawaii. No exact address, he didn’t divulge on the details.

I must say, the US Visa application is almost certainly, 90 percent luck and this luck significantly goes down if you applied in the Philippines.

I applied here in Tokyo where I currently work. The US Embassy here doesn’t have that vibe of rejection as most Japanese are approved (by the way, the Japanese don’t need B1/B2 Visa to visit USA as tourists so they’re mostly applying for other types of visa, usually for study in the US).

To be honest, I was prepared to waste the application fee as i have a hunch that i will be rejected (sorry I’m pessimistic. lol). I actually have no long plan of going to the US, I just applied spontaneously because i got frustrated that we are even required a Transit Visa to the US when I was planning to go to South American visa-free countries. So i just told myself to apply full B2 Visa. lol. That said, I have no itinerary going to the US, I just put some random hostel in my DS160 form and thought of a generic tourist place to go when asked in the interview.

Part of my feelings that I had no chance of getting approved is because I’m single, I’ve only been living in Japan for 7 months, and most of all, I have zero proof of ties to PH and of course in Japan. My profession is also quite in-demand in the West so it’s another red flag. Aside from that, my travel history is mediocre as I have only been to 3 countries so far, 2 of them in visa free SEA, and the other one is here in Japan. That’s all, and that is not anywhere near “extensive travel history”.

I did have proof of stable and active income but i don’t have millions. They only asked for bank book and payslips, not bank certificates as they’re aware of temporary loan schemes.

The interview itself, i was not really confident and my nervousness is quite apparent. So this is another red flag to consul supposedly. I have even answered something that do not match in my DS160 but it’s unintentional and an honest mistake. The consul didn’t raise it though, and at the middle of the interview, the consul went somewhere with my documents in his hand and at this point i knew i fucked up. After he came back, he just asked some few more questions without even looking at me, just chewing bubble gum and typing in his PC.

The funny thing is, i thought he hesitated to approve my visa as he said a long “hmmm” but followed by, “ok your visa is approved and it will be sent back to you in one week”. I was speechless but managed to croak “thank you so much” and left still in disbelief. lol

So, as I was saying, this is just luck.

Good Day, We applied in US consulate in Dubai last June 5,2018. Im working as a nurse for 11 years and my wife is working as a respiratory therapist for 10 years.We are both working in a government sector.We have a clean record here and in our homeland in Philippines.And we traveled in different places like in UK 2 times in France,Italy,Netherland,Germany,Japan,Singapore,Malaysia and Hongkong. I have a brother in America and he is already US citizen there. Our purpose of our visit is to celebrate our 10th year wedding anniversary in US and to see my brother. Finally when we received our passport we are approved but its only 1 year validity with multiple entry.And we noticed that there is an annotation mentioned in our visa “UAE TCN”. My concern are why is there an annotation like that in our visa and why only 1 year. Most of our colleagues here who also a Filipinos like us who applied US visa got their tourist visa with 10 years validity and no annotation of UAE TCN? Kindly enlighten us please. Thank you!

Hello Jeffrey, I think I also received your email? UAE TCN means you’re a third country national! I think it has something to do with your work and to see if you’ll return back after this visit but to be honest, the only best way to know this is by emailing the USA consulate themselves! Other than that, proceed with your trip! Return back to UAE and apply again, maybe they’ll give you the 10 year next time!

We were VERY prepared for the Tourist visa interview. Her application was PERFECT, she was relaxed, happy, and more than prepared to answer any question.

Here is what happened at the interview – Why do you want to go to the US? Helena says “to visit my boyfriend and his family.” How long have you been dating? Helen says ” a couple months. The consular then handed her a denial paper and said “sorry mam.” She walked away in tears. The interview lasted less than a minute. She had all sorts of documents to give him that would help prove she was returning to the Philippines, but he just asked 2 questions and handed her a denial. She has a squeaky clean history as well.

We don’t know what to do now. It seems as though she will be denied again if we try a second time. Would applying for a Fiance Visa have better chances of success than a Tourist Visa?

Hi! I delivered my child in the states last 2014… I have a good insurance that’s why it was convenient to give birth there. I stayed in the states for less than 2 months and went back to Nassau, Bahamas. I reapplied for tourist visa after it expired but sad to say, I was being denied. The consul was asking me why I chose to deliver the baby there when I worked in the hospital in Bahamas… He also asked me if I paid all the bills? I was being honest, telling him I still have a balance because I thought my insuRance had paid all. apply 1-2 months before your planned schedule. since applicants in us embassy in the philippines is quiet a lot (esp summer), you have to apply your visa ahead of time. be always prepared to answer such question like “why you applied for visa here in the PI and not in UAE?” its always been asked since your staying in UAE much more than in the philippines. If you will solely be paying for your trip – no relatives to stay within the USA and you’ll be buying your own flights etc, it’s okay to declare that you’re self-funding your trip! Your father’s property will just be the proof that you have family to return to in your country.

We first started dating when she was a graduate student here in the US (we broke up but then decided to get back together – long story short). We would both like her to come here for the intent of getting engaged, but want to see how it goes for a few months before and spend the summer traveling. She is not currently working in India. I am a PhD student. Do you think this sounds problematic? Originally she had lived in the US for about 4 years while a graduate student, and would be coming to the place where she was in school. Obviously, we would follow the law and conditions of the visa. But we’re a little afraid that the “going to see my boyfriend about getting engaged” coupled with “not currently employed” will make things difficult. I have heard that specific invitations can make things easier. If I send her a wedding invitation for my brother’s wedding this summer might that help? If you apply for Personal Tourist trip, they will automatically give you 10 years visa.. for business trip, it will depend on the consul.

Just to make sure you will also bring all the supporting documents you brought at the Embassy.. they don’t usually ask for it but most of the time they’ll ask your itinerary and return flight/ onward flight ticket.

When it comes to travel, I have absolutely no plans of going to the USA. It’s just that I got curious and decided to read the questions. I think you have a good suggestion with one thing being very clear. HONESTY. For me, I cannot take it when I have to be scrutinized. I feel that to question my character is a violation of my person. That explains why I am not going to the USA, and instead, go to countries where I do not have to go through the process of proving I am worthy of being their visitor.

Concerns have been raised with the United States government, including an official meeting in the White House, over fears supporters may be deterred from the 2026 men’s World Cup owing to excessive wait times to process visa applications to visit the country.

The tournament begins in 777 days and it will be at least another 18 months before many countries will be assured of qualification, yet the wait times for U.S. visa interviews in two Mexican cities are already in excess of 800 days, while it is 685 days in the Colombian capital of Bogota.

In a statement to The Athletic , the U.S. Department of State (which oversees international relations) insisted it is determined to reduce wait times but also encouraged supporters in affected countries to start applying for visas now, over two years out from the tournament and with the line-up still unknown.

The 2026 edition of world football’s governing body FIFA ’s flagship tournament will include 48 nations for the first time and will be held in 16 cities in the U.S, Canada and Mexico.

It will also be the first World Cup without an overarching local organising committee, which means FIFA is tasked with pulling everything together, in conjunction with the many layers of stakeholders and bureaucracy across three nations and 16 host cities, each of which have differing levels of private and taxpayer support.

The three host countries also have differing entry criteria for visitors, which has the potential to create visa confusion for fans seeking to follow their team deep into the tournament across multiple borders.

Several host cities, including the location for the final — New York/New Jersey — are also concerned about the wait times for visas, and the potential impact on income from tourism during the tournament, but the cities are currently allowing FIFA and the travel industry to lead the conversations with the government. Some of those who have spoken to The Athletic wished to remain anonymous, owing either to sensitivity around discussions or to protect working relationships.

“My concern is this could be a disaster (in 2026),” he said. “The concerns are absolutely there on the city level. The cities are thinking, ‘They are FIFA, so they must have it under control.’ But when you realise how FIFA worked in the past with previous hosts in Qatar and Russia, it doesn’t necessarily work in the United States.

“We’re just a completely different animal in terms of how our government operates and how we communicate. And frankly, the emphasis that we place on soccer as a sport in our country.

“If this was the Super Bowl, the World Series or the NBA finals, we’d be having a different conversation. Soccer is not the biggest sport in our country. And I think that’s a fundamental lack of understanding by FIFA, perhaps just taking it for granted that it is the case everywhere in the world. But it’s not yet in the United States.”

In recent months, U.S. travel industry representatives and FIFA have raised concerns with the U.S. Department of State and the White House as the respective groups seek to organise how millions of tourists will enter the U.S. during the five-week tournament in June and July 2026. In January 2024, FIFA strengthened its staff in D.C. when it hired Alex Sopko, the former chief of staff for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House, to be its new Director of Government Relations.

In a statement to The Athletic , a FIFA spokesperson said the organisation is working closely with U.S. Government in the planning and preparation for the World Cup, including regular discussions on critical topics such as immigration and visas, and adding it recognises “the urgency of these matters.”

The visa delays ahead of the World Cup were raised in a meeting at the White House on Wednesday, April 17, with senior administration officials in conversation with the United States Travel Association (U.S. Travel).  

Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of U.S. Travel, was present in the meeting. He describes visa wait times as a “massive issue” but added: “We came away confident that the White House recognises the significance of the 2026 World Cup and will take concrete steps to streamline aspects of the travel experience for the more than eight million anticipated visitors.”

Freely available data on the website of the Department of Consular affairs details the lengthy wait times currently impacting visitor visas from markets that may be highly relevant during the World Cup, which begins in 778 days.

Forty-one countries, including much of Europe, Japan, South Korea and Australia, are part of a visa waiver programme — ESTA — to enter the United States, which means citizens of these countries can travel without obtaining a visa, so as long as their trip for tourism or business does not exceed 90 days.

However, many people, estimated by U.S. Travel to represent 45 per cent of those who visit the States, do require visas for entry. These documents, called a B1/B2 visa, also require in-person appointments at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to take digital photographs and fingerprints, as well as an interview, in which the candidate must state their intention to return to their home countries and explain their reasons for visiting the United States.

Wait times for a visa interview at a U.S. consulate in the Mexican cities of Mexico City and Guadalajara are currently 878 days and 820 days respectively, so an application made today may not be approved before the World Cup begins. In the Colombian capital of Bogota, the current wait time is 685 days, while Panama City is 477 days and Quito in Ecuador is 420.

The 2026 World Cup is guaranteed to include the U.S, Mexico and Canada as hosts but five more nations may yet qualify from North and Central America, while up to seven may enter from the South American Football Confederation. Wait times are also dramatic in the Turkish city of Istanbul, where it takes 553 days for an appointment, as well as in Morocco, semi-finalists at the World Cup in 2022, where the wait time is 225 days.

In a statement to The Athletic, the state department said: “We encourage prospective FIFA World Cup visitors who will need U.S. visas to apply now – there is no requirement to have purchased event tickets, made hotel reservations, or reserved airline tickets to qualify for a visitor visa.”

Freeman attributes the current visa delays to the shutdown of consular offices during the coronavirus pandemic but also outlines long-standing issues.

“The U.S. is the world’s most desired nation to visit, but our market share is slipping and it’s in a large part due to long visa wait times,” he said. “If you are Colombian and want to come and bring your kids in 2026, your window might already be closed.”

A World Cup is further complicated because many supporters may wait until their nations have secured qualification to organise their trip. For the Americas, this will largely be in winter 2025 — the play-offs may be as late as March 2026 — while nations will only know the cities in which their teams will be competing following the draw, which is usually held eight months out from the tournament.

During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, visitors were able to expedite their entry into the country by applying for a Hayya card, effectively a fan pass for World Cup ticket holders that acted as a visa for the tournament. A repeat pass is not expected to be approved by the U.S, particularly at a time of global tensions both in the Middle East and following Russia ’s invasion of and continued war against Ukraine .

Freeman warned: “The U.S. is not going to change its visa policies in the short term to frankly cater to FIFA. I think where you may see the U.S. adjust some of its approach is in cooperation with Mexico and Canada . So once teams have qualified within the tournament, how do we streamline their ability to cross borders and attend games in other markets later in the tournament? I believe that’s where there will be greater cooperation and some of those discussions are already taking place.”

The answer may simply be additional staff and investment, such as deploying more consular officers at embassies, a method which has helped significantly reduce wait times from Brazil and India over the past year. Congress set aside $50million for the U.S. State Department to “reduce passport backlogs and reduce visa wait times” in a bill signed into law by U.S. President Joe Biden in March but it was not specified how and where the money will be invested.

There is a precedent for visa issues causing delays at major international sporting events in the United States. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who set the African 100metres record of 9.77 seconds in 2021, only received his visa documentation the day before the men’s 100 metres heats began at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon in 2022.

After securing his visa in Kenya, he took a five-hour flight to Qatar, endured a six-hour layover, then a 14-hour flight to Seattle, another three-hour layover and last of all, a one-hour flight to Oregon. He landed at 4.15 pm and immediately went to the track, where the heats commenced at 6.50pm.

The sprinter said: “If you are hosting a championship, you need to waive (visa requirements) for athletes. It’s a lesson for the host country in the future, and the U.S. is hosting the Olympics in 2028 (in Los Angeles), so they need to learn from this and do better next time.”

Murphy added: “There were hundreds of athletes who were unable to travel. The World Athletics Championships was was a relatively small event compared to the magnitude of what we’re talking about with the 48-team World Cup and the millions and millions of people involved, in terms of what needs to happen.”

Playing rosters are usually only approved in the final months before a tournament, but the U.S. is expected to expedite processing to ensure players and support staff from federations are able to arrive in time for the World Cup.

The U.S. Department of State attributes the issues at World Athletics to the pressures felt by consular officers coming out of the pandemic and told The Athletic that wait times for “P-visas”, generally used by members of professional sports teams coming to participate in athletic competitions, are “low worldwide”.

Murphy said the National Security Council has established a working committee on the matter for the White House but caveated his optimism with a reminder that more instant priorities are Israel, Gaza and Ukraine. He said: “This is not a priority beyond the host cities, FIFA itself and the members of Congress who represent those host cities. But in terms of there being a broad approach that is all-encompassing and has a wide swath of support in Congress, there’s just nothing there. There’s no bills or initiatives in Congress that are focused on this.”

He added: “The conversations that needed to have started a year plus ago are not at a point where they need to be. And when you’re talking about the U.S. Government, it is essentially at a state of standstill in terms of any major movement that needs to happen from now until November of this year (when there is a Presidential election).”

The Department of State insisted it is “committed to facilitating legitimate travel to the United States while maintaining high national security standards.”

Its statement continued: “We are pleased to be an active participant in a working group with FIFA and other stakeholders on plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Bureau of Consular Affairs recognizes the importance of international inbound tourism, including for mega sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, and is working tirelessly to facilitate secure travel to the United States. We have significantly reduced visa wait times over the past two years.”

One of the peculiarities of the U.S. political system is that there is no sports ministry to facilitate such discussions. In its absence, Murphy calls for a special envoy to be appointed, with the World Cup likely to be followed by the women’s edition in 2027 before the Olympics in LA in 2028.

He said: “There has to be somebody centralised to organise those conversations. That’s relatively easy to do. If it’s somebody that has the respect and attention of the cabinet agencies, they can have a conversation with Capitol Hill and that’s going to go a long way to getting things done.”

Prepare for the interview.

You should prepare for your interview thoroughly and carefully. Failure to be fully prepared for your interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate can result in delay or denial of your visa application. 

After you have been notified of your scheduled interview, you will need to take the following important steps in advance of the interview date:

1.  Carefully Review  your scheduling information in the Entrant Status Check on the  E-DV website , noting the date, time, and location of your immigrant visa interview.

2.  Review U.S. Embassy or Consulate Interview Instructions

There may be additional instructions provided by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will be applying and be interviewed, so please review those instructions carefully. To see this information, select below the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will be interviewed.  Please note  that some of the information included in these instructions may apply to immigrant visa classifications other than diversity visas. If you have questions about the country-specific information included here, please contact the embassy or consulate where you will apply for your visa.

3.  Schedule and Complete a Medical Examination

You (and each family member applying for a visa with you) are required to schedule a medical appointment with an authorized physician in the country where you will be interviewed.  You must complete your medical examination, along with any required vaccinations, before your scheduled visa interview date.  When your medical exam is completed, if you are given a medical exam envelope, you must bring it sealed (not opened) to your visa interview. Some physicians will send the medical exam results directly to the embassy or consulate.

A list of authorized physicians for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply is provided in the dropdown list below. You must contact a physician and schedule your medical appointment. The embassy or consulate will not do this for you. Explain that the examination is for an immigrant visa application and give the physician the date of the interview appointment. The physician will tell you the cost of the examination and tests.  Please note  that some of the information included in these instructions may apply to immigrant visa classifications other than diversity visas. 4. Gather Photographs and All Remaining Required Documents

Photographs

Each DV applicant will need to bring two (2) identical photos to the interview. Please review the detailed information about photo requirements to ensure that your photos will be acceptable.

Required Documentation

Each applicant will be required to present the following:

• Appointment information printed from the Entrant Status Check on the E-DV website.
• DS-260 confirmation page You can print this from the  Consular Electronic Application Center  any time after you complete your DS-260 application.
• Passport(s) valid for six months beyond the intended date of entry into the U.S. for you and each family member applying for a visa.
• Original documents or certified copies of civil documents submitted to KCC.  Bring one photocopy of any document that you did not submit to KCC as part of the interview qualification process.  You should be prepared to present:

Evidence of Required DV Qualifying Education or Work Experience

The principal diversity visa applicant must have a high school education, or its equivalent, OR two years of qualifying work experience in the last five years.

Education:  Submit to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at your interview, a certificate of completion equivalent to a U.S. diploma, school transcripts, or other evidence issued by the person or organization responsible for maintaining records, which specifies the completed course of study. The diversity visa selectee must have completed a 12-year course of elementary and secondary education in the U.S. or a comparable course of study in another country, sufficient in itself to qualify a student to apply for college admission. The following are not acceptable:

• Equivalency certificates (such as the G.E.D.) are not acceptable.
• Vocational degrees that are not considered a basis for further academic study will not be considered equivalent to U.S. high school education.

Work Experience:  Submit documentation to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at your interview demonstrating that you have two years of qualifying work experience in the last five years immediately prior to application. Qualifying work experience must be in an occupation that, by U.S. Department of Labor  O*Net Online Database  definitions, requires at least two years of training or experience that is designated as Job Zone 4 or 5, classified in a Specific Vocational Preparation (SVP) rating of 7.0 or higher. (See the section on  Confirm Your Qualifications  for information about using O*Net Online.)

Deportation Documentation

Applicants who have previously been deported or removed at government expense from the United States must obtain  Form I-212 , Permission to Reapply after Deportation, from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and follow the instructions included on that form.

Marriage Certificate

Married applicants must obtain an original marriage certificate, or a certified copy, bearing the appropriate seal or stamp of the issuing authority.  

Note:  Marriage certificates from certain countries are unavailable. More specific information is available online on our  Reciprocity by Country  webpage.

Marriage Termination Documentation

Applicants who have been previously married must submit evidence of the termination of EACH prior marriage. Evidence submitted to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate must be in the form of original documents issued by a competent authority, or certified copies bearing the appropriate seal or stamp of the issuing authority, such as:

• Final  divorce decree
• Death certificate
• Annulment papers

Custody Documentation

For adopted children, the adoptive parent must provide:

• A certified copy of the adoption decree;
• The legal custody decree, if custody occurred before the adoption;
• A statement showing dates and places where child resided with the parents; and
• If the child was adopted while aged 16 or 17 years, evidence that the child was adopted together with, or subsequent to the adoption of, a natural sibling under age 16 by the same adoptive parent(s).

5. Review Additional Information

Visit the U.S. embassy or consulate  website where you will be interviewed for any additional information.

Paying Fees

Before the interview, each applicant must pay the Diversity Visa fee. For DV-2024 applicants the fee is $330 per person. This fee is nonrefundable, whether a visa is issued or not. Learn more about Fees . Fee payment procedures vary between different U.S. Embassies and Consulates. At most locations, you should make arrangements to pay your fees before your interview date and time by following the instructions of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will be interviewed. A few U.S. Embassies and Consulates collect fees in the consular section at the time of your interview. Be sure you have looked at the specific instructions for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will be interviewed so that you can follow the appropriate procedures.

Other fees may apply to other parts of the process, such as medical exam fees, or local government fees to obtain certified copies of records.

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishesto enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Citizens of qualified countries may be also able to visit the U.S. without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program . If you do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program or are traveling to study, work, or participate in an exchange program, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

Applicants for U.S. visas are required to appear in person for a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate. You must schedule an appointment for that interview, either online using this website or through the call center .

To schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment, you must have the following information and documents available:

• A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions). If more than one person is included in your passport, each person desiring a visa must submit an application.
• Your visa application (MRV) fee payment receipt
• Your DS-160 confirmation page
• Your e-mail address
• If applicable, required documents based on visa class (such as a petition approval for petition-based visas; more information about visa types and information about each can be found here ).

Please be reminded that even though nonimmigrant visa fees are valid for one calendar year, options to schedule an appointment are limited. The U.S. Embassy in Manila schedules hundreds of thousands of nonimmigrant visa appointments each year and must accommodate requests both for new appointments and for those applicants who need to reschedule their appointments for whatever reason. Applicants are only allowed to reschedule three times (not including the initial appointment) without penalty. If the third rescheduling attempt is canceled, an applicant will only be allowed to reschedule a new date after a waiting period of 90 days. Please plan your visa application accordingly to avoid problems securing an interview appointment.

Around 600 people are blocking the entrances to the Department for Business and Trade. 

It is part of a protest organised by the Workers for Free Palestine campaign group. 

They say they are blockading sites involved in arms supplies to Israel. 

In a statement, the group said they were responding to a call to a call "from Palestinian trade unions for workers around the world to mobilise on May Day in solidarity with Palestinian workers".

MSP Michelle Thomson tells Sky News she wants to see more of a contest in the SNP leadership race, but says she does have a preference for one potential candidate in particular.

Nominations have opened to find a replacement for First Minister Humza Yousaf who resigned this week. 

Two candidates have said they are considering standing for the SNP leadership, but no candidates have been confirmed. 

Ms Thomson, a SNP MSP for Falkirk East, says she "would like to see other candidates as well".

"It's very important that democracy is aired for people on the ground who are members of the SNP," she says. 

But she says she is urging Kate Forbes, who narrowly lost out to Humza Yousaf in last year's SNP leadership contest, to stand. 

The former finance secretary is "the brightest political brain I've seen and certainly of her generation", Ms Thomson says.

Ms Forbes has told Sky News she is considering entering the race. 

As has former deputy first minister and former SNP leader John Swinney, who said he is giving "very careful consideration" to the prospect of throwing his hat into the ring.

Ms Thomson describes Mr Swinney as an "extremely experienced politician" with a "huge amount to offer".

Scrapping National Insurance payments would be a "ticking time bomb", shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson tells Sky News. 

In the budget in March, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt indicated plans to eventually scrap National Insurance contributions - a move Labour branded "reckless".

He later admitted to Sky News it "won't happen any time soon".

Ms Phillipson says it would open up a "£46bn black hole".

" More than 50 days on, we've had nothing from the government about how they're going to fund it, how they're going to pay for it, how all of that will work," Ms Phillipson says.

"It is just not good enough for ministers to set out this kind of bombshell with no plan, no detail around any of it."

Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson tells Sky News the government has been "slow to act" on knife crime - following an attack that left a 14-year-old dead yesterday.

"The government have been slow to act where it comes to cracking down on knife crime," she says.

"We've been pushing for further legislation, for further measures to stop young people... having access to knives and to take action on violent crime overall. 

"That, sadly, isn't what we've seen happen."

Earlier this morning, Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch told Sky News London's mayor Sadiq Khan was "failing" to tackle knife crime ( see post at 7.47am ).

Responding to the comments, Ms Phillipson says knife crime is a "nationwide issue", adding that now is not the time to "make political points".

Her comments come after the first failed asylum seeker was sent from the UK to Rwanda on Monday under a voluntary scheme. 

This "shows the point about Rwanda not being safe to be untrue because people are volunteering to go", Ms Badenoch claims.

The scheme is for those who have gone through the asylum process and had permission rejected, rather than for migrants who have illegally entered Britain by crossing the Channel on small boats.

It is separate to the powers set out in the controversial Safety of Rwanda Act, which became law last week. 

Ms Badenoch says after "so many obstacles" put in the way of that legislation, "the scheme is working". 

She cites comments made by the Irish government as evidence the Safety of Rwanda Act is working as a deterrent. 

"The scheme is working, as we've seen with the comments from the Irish government as well," she says. 

"This is something that we need to do in order to help police our borders."

Business Secretary (and equalities minister) Kemi Badenoch is calling on people to give examples of organisations issuing "incorrect guidance" on single-sex spaces. 

She tells Sky News the aim is to tackle "confusion" on the matter.

"What I have noticed as equalities minister is that across the board there is a lot of confusion about when single-sex spaces are protected," she says. 

Rather than the government carrying out a "huge investigation that will cost lots of money", she is asking people to send examples if they think the guidance in their institution is wrong.

Asked whether that could invite transphobic responses, she replies: "No, not at all. And it shouldn't be."

"All we're saying is that if you think the guidance in your institution is wrong, let us know... and then we can help provide clarity."

Ms Badenoch's "call for input" comes a day after the health secretary announced plans to update the NHS Constitution to "ensure that biological sex is respected".

Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch tells Sky News the London mayor is failing to tackle knife crime - following an attack that left a 14-year-old dead yesterday.

She was responding to a question about how high a priority tackling knife crime is for the government - with official data showing it increased across England and Wales in 2022-23.

She replies it's a "very high priority", but says policing powers are devolved to the London mayor.

"Sadiq Khan is failing," she says, adding that he is "not taking this issue seriously enough".

"I think we really do need to put the spotlight on what the mayor of London is doing on knife crime, on policing the streets, on public order, " she says.

"He has the biggest police force. He has the one that has the most resources. He should be using them to keep people safe."

ONS data shows that in 2022-23, the West Midlands, led by Tory mayor Andy Street,  recorded the highest rate of 178 offences per 100,000 population .

But it's true too that this set of local elections is hugely significant as the final big ballot test we're going to get before a general election.

Some 28 million people across England and Wales have the option of casting a vote - be it for councillors, mayors, London Assembly members or police and crime commissioners - and Labour is using this polling day as a dry run for a general election, testing their arguments, focusing their spending and attention in local battlegrounds where they need to win for general election victory.

And while much of the attention in the run-up to polling day has been on whether the results will trigger a full-blown leadership crisis for the Tories, what's perhaps more relevant to you the voters is what these elections tell us about the prospect of a majority Labour government.

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf has resigned – days after he cut the SNP's powersharing deal with the Scottish Greens.

It followed a bitter row over the SNP's climbdown on climate targets as he said the agreement between the parties had "served its purpose".

As a result, his former Green allies teamed up with the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats to get behind two no-confidence motions, one in himself as leader of Scotland and another regarding the entire Scottish government.

Now attention turns to another SNP leadership contest and what the divisions in Scottish politics could mean for the future of the independence campaign.
