May brings the start of the tourist low season in Thailand with most destinations generally seeing a drop-off in visitor numbers once the Songkran holiday period is over in April. Hotels and domestic airlines in Thailand often begin to run promotions in May so there are usually some good deals available throughout the month.

Thailand weather in May

May is still the hot season in Thailand, but increasing amounts of rainfall later in the month signal the gradual transition into the rainy season. That doesn’t mean that you will see relentless rain during your stay, but be prepared for some potentially heavy downpours at any time in May. Temperatures remain hot and during a typical two week stay you can expect to see plenty of blue sky and sunshine mixed in with the showers. Humidity levels are high across the country in May and it’s a month where you are likely to appreciate the air-conditioning in your room more than ever.

Which is the best Thai island or beach resort to visit in May?

Whichever island or beach resort you opt for in May, you can expect to see some rain. Rainfall levels during the month are lower on the Gulf of Thailand coast compared to the Andaman Coast. Average rainfall levels are higher on the Andaman Coast due to the effects of the south-west monsoon. This usually blows in from the Indian Ocean during June-September, but it can sometimes start early in May. This brings higher rainfall levels to destinations including Phuket , Krabi and the Trang islands . Downpours can be torrential and may be accompanied by gusty winds and high waves. Some boat services to outlying islands in the Andaman Sea are temporarily suspended during May-October, but it should be noted that it doesn’t rain all day, every day. There is still plenty of sunshine and temperatures remain high.

The Gulf Coast of Thailand does not feel the full effect of the south-west monsoon making May a good month to visit islands including Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao . And on the mainland, Hua Hin and the Cha Am area are also an excellent choice for a beach break. Over on the eastern seaboard there are varying levels of rainfall with amounts high on Ko Chang and comparatively low in Pattaya and Ko Samet .

A change of winds and summer storms can see jellyfish arriving in Thai waters during the rainy season. Most are relatively harmless, but box jellyfish can also show up and it is something to be aware of. Swimmers should also pay heed to any warning flags on beaches. There are fatalities every year because swimmers ignore the no swimming flags and get caught in rip tides.

May events and festivals in Thailand

The onset of the rainy season in May/June has traditional significance in Thailand. The importance of rice to the country is celebrated with the Royal Ploughing Ceremony in Bangkok . There is no fixed date for this event, but it usually falls in May. The rice-growing heartlands in the north-east of Thailand also hold their own unique festivities ahead of the rice planting season with home-made rockets launched and boisterous parties held to encourage a good crop.

There are a number of important Buddhist holidays throughout the year, but the most significant in Thailand is Visakha Bucha Day . The exact date depends on the full-moon, but often falls in May. Visakha Bucha Day commemorates three defining events in the life of the Lord Buddha: the day on which he was born, reached his enlightenment 35 years later and the day he died and entered Nirvana 45 years after that. Visakha Bucha Day is a public holiday in Thailand and there are restrictions in place on alcohol sales . The first of May is also a public holiday for Labour Day.

In this article, we’re going over the seasons of each region to help you determine the best time to visit Thailand for what you’d like to see and do on your trip.

When is the best time to visit Thailand?

In general, you’ll find the most comfortable temperatures across the country, with little chance of rain, from November – February.

Now, let’s break it down by region…

Bangkok and Chiang Mai

Bangkok and Chiang Mai have the best weather from November – February . Outside of these months, you can expect heavy rains and extreme heat, with lots of smoke in the north of the country.

Andaman Sea

If you plan to visit the Thai islands, the best time to visit the Andaman Sea (Thailand’s southwest coast) is November – April . Monsoon season is May – September in this region, so you will likely want to avoid it during this time.

Thailand’s Gulf

Thailand’s Gulf Coast will have its best weather from December – March , but the summer months ( July – September ) are also a decent time to visit and the crowds tend to be fewer. Monsoon season in the Gulf is much shorter than the Andaman Sea, generally lasting from October through the end of November.

We’ve visited Thailand in all seasons

Our experience:

We’ve spent quite a bit of time living and traveling in Thailand, and with the exception of June, we’ve been in Thailand during every other month (many of which we’ve been multiple times).

Our favorite time of the year in Thailand

November – January

This is easily our favorite time of the year to visit Chiang Mai and the surrounding area. It’s also a great time to visit the Andaman Coast and the islands in the Gulf.

Worst time to visit Thailand

Starting in mid-February, the burning season begins and it’s not a good time to be in the northern part of the country. We’ve been there for the burning season twice, and it’s rough. (Not recommended!)

By April, it is uncomfortably hot in the north. The only reprieve is the (very fun!) Songkran celebration (a water festival) which takes place during April.

Good to know: From February through April, the islands and coasts can be a better choice.

The summer months are very hot, muggy, and rainy in Thailand and can bring monsoon weather to the islands and Andaman Coast.

Thailand is a country in the middle of mainland Southeast Asia with nearly 320,000 square miles (513,120 km²) an odd shape with a long tail leading down towards the equator.

Thailand has everything from high mountains and an upland plateau in the north, to central plains and tropical islands in the south.

The map above shows a very rough break down of the northern, central and souther regions of the country. Generally speaking, you can consider Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to be in the north, Bangkok is part of central and the lower leg and Thai islands make up the south.

The weather in Thailand varies from region to region with the north experiencing the greatest fluctuation in temperatures throughout the year and the south experiencing very little variation the closer you get to the equator.

The climate is mostly tropical with warm temperatures throughout the year (with the exception of the mountains in the far north).

The seasons in Thailand can be categorized into three main groups: Cool, Hot and Rainy.

Though somewhat unpredictable, and varying from coast to coast and by region, they follow the general pattern below.

Cool season: November to February; also peak tourist season
Hot season: March to May
Rainy season: June to October

The cool season is felt most distinctly in the far north, but temperatures hardly change in the south.

The hot season is essentially the dry season where central and north are at their highest temperatures with clouds of dust gathering in the air.

The rainy season is caused by the southwest monsoon, which is unpredictable. However, the Gulf Coast is effected less by the southwest monsoon and more by the northwest monsoon, causing November to consistently be its wettest month.

We’ve broken down the seasons by region below to give you a better idea of the climate in specific areas.

Seasons in Northern Thailand

The weather in northern Thailand tends to be less humid and experiences the greatest rage of temperatures throughout the year. During January, the average low temp in Chiang Mai is 59ºF (15ºC). On the flip side, during hot season, the north of the country is dry and dusty and temperatures can skyrocket.

Lots of layers for cooler nights and warmer days

Swimwear – even though you’re not by the water, there are plenty of pools and waterfalls!

Central Thailand experiences the country’s three seasons fairly equally throughout the year. The one constant is humidity, which makes the air feel hotter than it should.

Hot Season: March – June
Rainy Season: June – October
Cool Season: October – February

A shawl or scarf to cover your shoulders when entering temples and religious sites
An insulated water bottle to stay hydrated

Seasons in South Thailand & the Thai Islands

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Mu Ko Lanta National Park

Temperatures in southern Thailand are more consistent throughout the year, with less variation the closer you get to the equator. There is really only 2 seasons down here: wet and dry.

The climate does vary from coast to coast in the south based on the different monsoons. Which is why we’ve split up the coasts below to show seasonal variations.

A Note About Diving: Diving and snorkeling will be at it’s best during the winter months. December and January will be more crowded since it’s the peak season. If you want to see some mantas and local whale sharks, it’s best to plan your trip around February to April.

Phuket, Krabi & Andaman Coast (Southwest Coast)

The wettest months are September and October
Dry Season: mid-November – March

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao (Gulf of Thailand)

The rainiest months are October and November
“Shoulder season” (not too much rain): January and February
May – October can be windy

A wide brimmed hat or baseball cap to keep the sun out of your eyes

Cool Season in Thailand: November – February

Peak of the dry season in most parts of the country, November sees cooler temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The western Thai Gulf coast is the only part of the country still experiencing rain.

Getting into the peak of tourism season in Thailand, weather is great all over the country and temperatures are relatively cool. There is little to no rainfall and tourists flock to the beaches for plenty of sunshine.

Peak tourism season and great weather all over Thailand. Accommodation will be at premium prices, and you should book well in advance. The cooler temps in the northern region are great for hiking in the mountains and trekking through the jungles.

Still peak tourism season all over the country. The Chinese New Year typically happens in February (thought it follows the lunar calendar and the exact vary from year to year).

Best places to visit during cool season in Thailand

Northern Thailand experiences the most comfortable weather of the year during this time. Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai and Pai are all great places to add to your itinerary.
Consider visiting lesser known destinations , as this time of year is peak tourism season.
Sam Phan Bok: A natural wonder only accessible during dry season. Found in Ubon Ratchathani, Isan, thousands of holes are scattered across the Mekong River bed.
Bo Sang , a small village in the north hosts their annual Umbrella Festival on the 3rd weekend in January.
Chinatown in Bangkok is a fun place to witness the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Visit some of the Thai Islands in the Andaman Sea such as Koh Lipe , Koh Lanta and Phuket.

Best things to do in Thailand during cool season

Celebrate the Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai in November.
Visit temples in Bangkok such as Wet Saket during the Thai national holiday of Makha Bucha to observe spiritual rituals.
Krabi Naga Fest , a music festival near Krabi.
Jai Thep Music and Arts Festival takes place in Chiang Mai in early February.
Loy Krathong festival is celebrated around the country by floating krathongs on the rivers to give thanks to the water spirits.
Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair boasts stunning light shows amid the ancient ruins.
Big Mountain Music Festival in Phetchaburi happens in December.
The Andaman coast is at it’s best in November, so it’s a perfect time to go island hopping .

Hot Season in Thailand: March – May

Temperatures are starting to heat up all over Thailand, so it’s best to stay near the water. In the north, burning season is in full force, so you’ll want to avoid traveling there as much as possible. (Trust us, we lived in Chiang Mai during these months, and we would not recommend it.) Instead, this is prime time for diving in the Andaman Sea at popular locations such as the Similan Islands.

One of the hottest months in Thailand. Be sure your accommodation has air conditioning if you are visiting during this month. Remember to drink lots of water and use plenty of sunscreen too.

Another incredibly hot month in Thailand. With many public and religious holidays, it’s a good time to get off the beaten path and experience new and interesting cultural celebrations.

Rainy Season in Thailand: June – October

The start of the rainy season means you’ll want to carry an umbrella and wear shoes that can get wet. Take extra precautions on scooters as the roads can be dangerous when wet.

Wet and humid all over Thailand, you’ll want to pack and umbrella and wear plenty of bug spray! Be careful of leeches if you are planning on venturing into the jungle.

Typically the wettest month in all of Thailand. Come prepared for the rain and be sure to have a long list of indoor activities to entertain yourself during this month.

This is the wettest time of year on the Andaman coast, but rains generally ease up in the north.

Central and Northern Thailand will have dried up by October, but nearly all of the islands on both coasts will still be experiencing heavy rain.

Best Time to Visit Thailand | Khao Sok National Park

Best places to visit during rainy season in Thailand

National Parks such as Khao Yai National Park and Kanchanaburi’s Erawan National Park will be wonderful this time of year.
Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Hua Hin, and Cha Am will be some of the driest beaches and islands to visit.
Bangkok for its magnitude of indoor activities and International festivals.
The small mountain town of Pai for its decent weather in October.
Visit the Mekong River in the north to experience the mysterious natural phenomenon known as Naga Fireballs of Nong Khai in late October.

Best things to do in Thailand during rainy season

Go chasing waterfalls! They will be at their fullest during the rainy season.
Visit the floating bungalows in Khao Sok National Park

There really is no “bad” time to visit Thailand, but it’s a good idea to have the seasons in mind when planning your itinerary and activities you’d like to experience during your trip.

Our personal pick would be to visit Thailand between November and February, as you’ll have great weather all around the country.

When to avoid traveling in Thailand

Chiang Mai : If possible, avoid visiting from mid-February through early April. This is “burning season” and air quality can be quite bad.
Andaman Sea (Krabi, Phi Phi, Phuket, Koh Lanta) : Rainy season is from May – October
Gulf Islands (Koh Tao, Koh Chang, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui) : Rainfall is heaviest in October & November
Similan Islands : The National Marine Park is closed between the months of November through March.

Hello Wanderers! I am planning to visit Thailand later in the year, after having been there back at the turn of the century. I was very drawn overall toward the culturally rich aspects of life. My query is related to the continuing Covid 19 pandemic waves, and the related fallout: sudden travel restrictions, new testing rules, already booked reservations, which one is then unable to fulfill. Is there a thing such as outright relevant cause to have some pre-booked accommodations annulled, due situations fully beyond a tourist’s control, like a cancelled / well delayed flight, or service shutdown. How is the weather in Thailand in May? If April is the hottest month of the year in Thailand, May is slightly cooler than April. But Thailand weather in May is also a bit more humid.

The average high temperature in May is 34 degrees Centigrade, or 93 degrees Fahrenheit. The average low is 26 degrees Centigrade, or 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thailand’s rainy season begins in the middle of May. So don’t forget your umbrella! There is an average of 17 rainy days in May, with about 180 millimeters of rainfall. Keep in mind that it usually rains in the late afternoon or evenings.

Therefore, you should try to do your sightseeing in the morning. Also, Koh Samui and the Pha Ngan Islands are usually drier in May than other parts of Thailand.

Coronation Day – 4 to 6 May 2024

Coronation Day is a national holiday in Thailand. In fact, it commemorates the coronation of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, a.k.a. King Rama X, who has ruled Thailand since October 2016.

But he was not coronated until 2019. On this day, the King pays respects to previous monarchs of the Chakri Dynasty.

Royal Ploughing Ceremony – 6 May 2024

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an important event in Thailand. And it celebrates the beginning of the rice planting season. Yasothon Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival – 10 to 13 May 2024 (Estimated)

The Yasothon Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival is one of Thailand’s most important fertility rites. and travelers taking part in the event have given it rave reviews.

Taking place at the beginning of the planting season, the rip-roaring festival features a series of parades, dancers, drummers, and the launching of giant phallus-shaped bamboo rockets into the sky!

The event concludes with participants frolicking in muddy ponds. The city of Yasothon is the capital of Yasothon province. It is located in Northeastern Thailand.

Visakha Bucha – 22 May 2024

One of the most significant Buddhist holidays in Thailand, Visakha Bucha Day commemorates the three defining moments in the life of the Lord Buddha.

They all occurred on the day of the full moon of the sixth lunar month, but not in the same year. First, Buddha was born on this day. Second, he reached enlightenment 35 years later on this day. Finally, he died and entered Nirvana on this day 45 years later.

Many devotees visit Buddhist temples on Visakha Bucha Day to make merit. There are also restrictions on alcohol sales, which means that some bars and clubs close for the day.

Samui Regatta – 25 May to 1 July 2024

As one of Asia’s biggest sailing events, the Samui Regatta will be hosted by Banana Fan Sea Resort for the first time this year. The property is centrally located on Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui’s premier tourist destination.

Attracting yachtsmen from more than 20 countries across across the Asia Pacific, the regatta is known not only for its high-calibre racing. Tropical parties are a key element of the event.

The regatta is in its 19th year. It is organized by Regattas Asia along with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta, the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Municipality of Koh Samui, and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Full Moon Party – 23 May 2024

The Full Moon Party is held on the beach of Haad Rin every month on the night of the full moon. DJs play a variety of musical styles including trance, dubstep, reggae, and techno.

Jugglers, fire-eaters, and fireworks add drama to the all-night event.

Haad Rin is crescent shaped beach located on the island of Ko Pha Ngan. It can be reached by boat from Koh Samui, an island off the coast of Southern Thailand. Koh Samui is 293 miles (471 kilometres) south of Bangkok. Because the drive takes nearly 10 hours, air travel is recommended,. The flight takes just over one hour.

Inthakin – City Pillar Festival, Chiang Mai – 2024 Date to Be Announced

The Inthakin City Pillar Festival is held in Chiang Mai to celebrate city’s grand pillar. The annual festival starts on the 12 th day of the waning moon of the sixth lunar month. It continues for eight days.

There is also lots of yummy Thai dishes to feast on. Monks pray at the temple in the morning.

Processions around the city’s moat follow. Celebrations continue after dark. The festival is also known as the Lak Mueang Festival, Sai Khan Dok, or Bucha Sao Inthakhin. It is the most important festival in Thailand in May.

Chedi Luang Temple

Most of the festivities take place in and around Chedi Luang Temple. It is known as Wat Chedi Luang in Thai. Wat is Thai for temple.

The temple dates back to the 14th century. It was relocated to its present location in 1800. It was reconstructed in the 1990s. The temple is one of the many Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai is 364 miles (586 kilometres) north-northwest of Bangkok. The drive takes close to nine hours. The flight takes roughly 70 minutes.

And then the rains started. May marks the onset of Thailand's primary monsoon season, and by the end of April you'll be counting the hours till May 1. Pretty much the entire country sees a significant rise in rainfall — some areas more than others — and you can expect most every province to have at least some rain every other day. This isn't good news if you've just arrived, but it makes for a very welcome relief for anyone who was in Thailand in April!

May is a wildcard. In some years it feels like an extension of hot season while in others it truly marks the beginning of rainy season. The haze lifts over Northern destinations like Chiang Mai and Lampang , where a few good storms render the mountains a lush shade of green. It’s a great time to watch rice farmers sewing their fields in Northeastern points like Ubon Ratchathani and Nakhon Phanom . This is also when Yasothon holds its wild Bang Fai (Rocket) Festival. Fruit season is in full swing in eastern Gulf provinces like Rayong and Chanthaburi , which holds a durian-eating contest as part of its annual fruit festival.

The lower Gulf islands of Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao see significantly less rain than other parts of the country in May. The Andaman Sea islands and eastern Gulf islands shift into low season, with some resorts on smaller islands like Ko Bulon Lae and Ko Wai closing up completely. In these regions, the seas begin to get rough and many public ferries cease operating until November.

May sees the first of a series of falls in temperature from the April peak. It will still be very warm across the country, and, when combined with the rain, the humidity can be excruciating, but the rains do provide relief all too frequently. Expect to see some flooding in urban centres like Bangkok in the first weeks of the rainy season as drains, all clogged up with dry season debris will block.

Ko Chang in May is wet. Not as wet as it will get in the coming months, but certainly wetter than just about any other island in Thailand — if you really want some island time but don't want to head south, Ko Samet is a better bet. Back on Ko Chang, expect at least some drizzle most days. On the upside the crowds from April will start to drop off.

The rains start midway through May in Chiang Mai and it quickly ramps up to rain every other day. As elsewhere this provides welcome respite from the heat of April, but an added bonus is that it starts to clear the air, taking at least some of the smoke back to earth. The regions many waterfalls start to get going again and trekking starts to get a little bit more, well, slippery.

May sees a slight dip in temperatures and a pretty much doubling of rainfall from the preceding month in Thailand's northeast. That said, given how hot it was in April, May remains a very warm month. Expect rain every other day.

Unlike the rest of the country, in May there is a small hike in temperatures, but as with near everywhere else there is a substantial increase in the rainfall. The northern section of the Gulf Coast sees less rain than Ko Samui and surrounds, so if you're after some beach time and are not fussed about heading out to an island, sticking to an area like Hua Hin should see you get slightly better weather — but you won't be bone dry.

Only Ko Chang gets more rain than Phuket, Krabi and surrounds in May. Temperatures are only slightly off from the highs of April, so you'll still be hot — just wet as well. It's not all day torrential affairs, but expect a heavy downpour for an hour or two most days. In between the rains, if you're in luck, you'll score some brilliant sunshine. May sees the commencement of very good deals for hotels on this coast, so if you're willing to gamble on getting wet, you can get some fabulous hotel deals on Phuket and Ko Phi Phi .

It is usually celebrated on weekends mid-May, just before crops are planted at the beginning of the monsoon. If you can, try to make it to Yasothon for the spectacle as the celebrations reach fever pitch here. Harking back to a Buddhist fertility ritual, the rocket festival serves a practical function of diffusing anxiety around the monsoon, and allows everyone to have a blast before returning to the fields prepared to get work on sowing season.

On the first day of the festival, villagers bring their home made bang fai/rocket to the city’s main shrine to pay their respects. The action for tourists picks up on the second day with street parades and traditional dances to live music. After the performances, there is a Buddhist merit making ceremony, and then the highlight of the festival, i.e. the rocket show. Keep an eye out for people sporting masks, they are likely to be carrying water guns and will soak you, all in fun, of course.

Make sure to stick around for the final day, when villagers launch their homemade bamboo rockets into the air, and pray for rain. For added fun, there is a panel judging the rockets by the distance they travel in the air. Misfired rockets are disqualified, and the owner is thrown in a puddle of mud for ritual mockery and to put out any minor burns from the misfire.

Overtime, the festival has grown so that now there are rockets just for show, mounted on huge carts, showcasing firepower ranging from a kilo to 120 kilos! Don’t be surprised by the cross-dressing and naughty humour, it is a fertility festival after all. Aside from the usual performances and dances, you will notice cross-dressing across age and sex over the 3 days. Make sure to join the locals in sipping on Sura, a village brew with 40% alcohol content and cheaper than beer. It would not be an overstatement to say that the village is drunk on life and Sura for this duration. This is also a time when large quantities of alcohol are consumed by the villagers. Before going, why not learn how to make a bang fai rocket at one of the workshops on offer?

Foodies and people just getting into cooking, head over to The Best Thai Cooking school to learn how to make red and green curries, fried rice, noodles. The school is based on a farm in Chiang Mai and grows its own ingredients, making it the most sought after in the area.

Head over to Chaiyaphum in the North East for a one-of-a-kind experience, known as the Brutal Ordination Parade. Having worked hard and made merit, monks are put to the final test before their ordination. They are paraded about town on bamboo platforms and shaken hard to test their inner equilibrium.

Held every year since 1971 before Buddhist Lent, the ceremony is particularly held for the young men of the Ban Non Tan-Ban Non Salao communities of Phu Khiao, Chaiyaphum who wish to become Buddhist monks. Each aspirant is put in a bamboo chair and carried around the village for 3 kilometers while being shaken violently. In theory, those that fall off the chair can not be ordained, but in practice, perhaps testament to their hard work and discipline, no one has ever fallen off.

May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

The weather in Bangkok and other cities in May starts to get extremely humid. Koh Samui is better than Phuket and Krabi to go because rainfall during May is much lower on the Gulf of Thailand than on the Andaman Coast.

The best time to visit Chiang Mai

Often packed with as many visitors as there are roadside hawkers, Chiang Mai is one of Thailand ’s most-loved destinations, offering a cool respite from the beaches and busy cities further south.

While there’s a lot to do in town, the best experiences in Chiang Mai are often found in the province’s natural surroundings . And as with the rest of Thailand , the weather remains warm and pleasant year-round, rain and smoke can make or break even the best-planned vacation up north.

Scaling rugged mountains, braving the thrill of white water rapids, enjoying nature’s larder or forging connections with the local wildlife – these are the experiences that define Chiang Mai, whatever the weather. However, there's one specific time of the year when it might be wise to postpone your travel plans entirely. Here's our seasonal guide to help you make the right decision for you.

Temperatures are coolest in November to January

Thailand never gets cold, but by November, the rain stops and cold fronts bring the temperatures down a notch (at night at least). This ushers in the “cool” season and officially marks the start of Thailand's high season when it comes to travel. And while the city is at its busiest over the Christmas and New Year weeks, there’s a lot more on offer in the way of tours, trips and cultural festivals that do a good job at dispersing crowds.

Visit Chiang Mai at this time and you’ll see locals wearing sweaters as nighttime temperatures drop to 12–15°C (53–60°F) while sunseekers from cooler climes opt for shorts and loose tees. Yet wherever your bar sits, the cooler weather guarantees to make outdoor activities more bearable. During this time, parks and rivers that shut during the rainy season reopen, while the country’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon , is even prone to a touch of morning frost.

While there are plenty of peaks in Thailand where you can enjoy a sea of clouds – think Phu Chee Fah, Doi Pha Hom Pok or Doi Angkhang – there’s no place better than atop the towering pinnacle of Doi Luang Chiang Dao . Open for just November, December and January and limited to 150 people a day, it does take some planning, but the 360 views at sunset and sunrise are entirely worth it. The booking website is mainly in Thai, so try sending a message through the Facebook group to secure your space.

Cautious thrill seekers will also enjoy the cool season as rivers continue to flow but without the risk of violent jungle river swells that come with monsoon downpours. While the Nam Wa River in nearby Nan Province offers the best long-distance rapids in the country, Chiang Mai’s Mae Taeng River is just as good for those new to the sport despite being a little busy at times.

Back in the city, the cool season also brings with it a slew of culturally significant events that are well worth planning into your itinerary. November’s full moon is of greatest importance in the lunar calendar and is when the country celebrates Loi Krathong festival. Marking the end of the rainy season, people thank the waters for a prosperous year by floating makeshift candlelit rafts decorated with flowers and incense. Some write prayers on paper and add them to the raft, others say prayers as they push the raft off, and some include pieces of their hair or nails as a way to rid themselves of bad luck.

In Chiang Mai specifically, this celebration aligns with the northern Yee Peng festival of lanterns. Most years, a huge lantern release event takes place at Maejo University, while other smaller lantern launches happen at Three Kings Monument and Thapae Gate. December and January are also the months where more contemporary festivals take place, from music and art events to the up-and-coming Chiang Mai Festival City – a cultural, craft and music event – held every November and December.

Head to Chiang Mai in April for Songkran

By March and April, the Thai weather hits the height of summer with the mercury reaching a scorching 30–40°C (86–104°F). While schools are out, most prefer to seek refuge in air-conditioned homes and malls with the exception of Songkran – Thailand’s three-day, water throwing new year celebration. It officially takes place April 13 to 15, but in Chiang Mai, it tends to span April 12 to 16 to allow a couple of extra days of fun.

Across the country, families and friends seek blessings from elders before seeking out the best water fights on every street corner. Chiang Mai is well known to be one of the top places to experience this festival, with the entire Old City Moat transforming into an endless circuit of water spraying mayhem, roadside concerts and free flowing revelry. If you prefer to stay dry or are traveling with young kids, opting for a hotel outside of the old city is strongly recommended at this time, allowing you to dip in as much or as little as you like.

April is also the month where Thais celebrate some of the best foods of the season. Succulent mango and mangosteens begin to ooze with sugary sweetness, while locals start to look to the trees in hopeful harvest of protein-rich eggs of red ants, enjoyed in both soups and deep fried in omelets. You’ll find both in their raw forms in Warorot Market , while Han Teung Chiangmai restaurant is the best place to sample summery Northern Thai dishes ready made, located conveniently close to Chiang Mai University and the ancient Wat Umong Temple .

There are cheaper rates in the rainy season of May to October

Thailand’s rainy season tends to be less predictable than other monsoons in the region, yet with it comes a bloom of lush green scenery and moody afternoon skies that are a piece of art in their own right.

In Northern Thailand, rain often arrives as swift, brief showers in the afternoon or evening, while temperatures hover around a high-humid 30°C (86°F). There are moments, though, when the sky wears a cloak of endless rainfall and gray clouds that can last for days – a fair trade for lower temperatures.

During this time, Chiang Mai is a stunning greenscape of jungle forest, shimmering paddy fields and misty mountain peaks. Views from hillsides are nowhere near guaranteed, but a day or two in a bamboo hut homestay in Mae Wang or Chiang Dao offers hot coffee, relaxed vibes and natural local experiences at bargain prices.

Waterfalls are also their most impressive at this time, with the Nam Tok Bua Tong Waterfall (AKA the Sticky Waterfall) and Mae Sa Waterfall being two popular spots to splash around in. In recent years authorities have taken more steps to monitor flash flooding, resulting in the odd unannounced closure to ensure the safety for visitors.

For ultimate rainy season vibes, head to Pai in July for the yearly Pai Jazz & Blues Festival that takes over the small mountain town with a heavy schedule of outdoor cafe and bar performances that continue rain or shine.

The smog in February to April is best avoided

Some say Chiang Mai is too good to be true, which is perhaps why there’s a smoky season to balance it all out. From February (and sometimes as early as January) to April, Northern Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam are blanketed in a thick layer of PM2.5 smog caused primarily by slash-and-burn agricultural practices and human-caused forest fires.

Despite many efforts to reduce the smog (and the fires), this regional crisis seems to be getting worse not better. Chiang Mai regularly tops the list as the most air-polluted city in the world, dozens of times each year.

While passing through the region during this time is manageable for tourists as exposure is generally brief, locals who are sick of the smoke choose to hunker down indoors, postpone their activities, or escape to the beaches while the rest of the city suffocates. Consequently, events are canceled or are simply not planned, casting a quiet spell over the city that pairs with the smoke for an almost dystopian atmosphere that sadly can't be ignored.

20 Best Places to Visit in Thailand — From the Country's Oldest National Park With Secret Waterfalls to Stunning Islands With Excellent Diving

There's no shortage of beautiful places to visit in Thailand.

Thailand is so much more than a travel destination — visiting is a bona fide rite of passage. From hostel-hopping backpackers to well-heeled five-star hotel aficionados, there’s something for everyone in “The Land of Smiles.”

My most recent trip to Thailand was in early 2022, when the country implemented strict entry requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, I was one of a few hundred thousand tourists who were allowed into the country, and it felt like I had many of the typically crowded attractions all to myself.

The beauty of Thailand is that it will show you different sides of itself no matter how many times you visit. From the idyllic white-sand beaches and palm-fringed islands in the south to the misty hillsides and temple-peppered mountains of the north, the rattle and hum under neon lights of nonstop Bangkok, and the ruins of ancient cities surrounded by jungle, Thailand never disappoints.

So, what are the best places to visit in Thailand? I reached out to a Thailand travel expert and threw in a bit of my own first-person experience to help you narrow down this ever-growing list.

For most travelers, an adventure in Thailand will likely kick off in the nonstop, energetic capital city, Bangkok. A dizzying destination and one of my favorite international cities, Bangkok is full-on sensory overload — but in the best way. Dig into sizzling street food; meander back alleys and bustling thoroughfares in search of small markets, shops, and hidden temples; cruise along the Chao Phraya River, and grab a cocktail at the dozens of sky-high rooftop bars.

Tip: Book a room at the Capella Bangkok or Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok — two iconic luxury hotels with stunning locations perched on the Chao Phraya River.

Second to Bangkok on most visitors’ lists is the northern city of Chiang Mai. Many travelers even prefer Chiang Mai to Bangkok for its relatively slower pace of life. The spectacular city is bursting with temples (Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a must) and humming with restaurants and bars.

"I would say for anybody, whether it's their first time or a repeat trip to Thailand, if you have been there or you haven't, [you have to visit] Chiang Mai," said Grant Ekelund , Travel + Leisure A-List advisor and senior travel consultant and Asia specialist at InsideAsia. "It's such a neat city. It’s one of those destinations that has something for everyone … Are you a foodie? Do you want to hike? See cool temples? Have amazing trekking opportunities? It can all be done [here], and it slots into any itinerary perfectly."

Koh Phi Phi

Thailand has more than 1,400 islands scattered around its coastline, but few are as famous or iconic as the Phi Phi Islands in the Andaman Sea. Comprising two islands — Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh — Koh Phi Phi is known for its natural beauty, excellent diving, and raucous party scene. For the latter, Phi Phi Don is the most famous. Phi Phi Leh, meanwhile, is uninhabited and beloved by those looking to disappear into nature. It was blasted into the public eye about two decades ago, when Leonardo DiCaprio's character went in search of an island paradise in the film "The Beach," which is set in real-life Maya Bay.

While we’re on the topic of Koh Phi Phi, we’d be remiss not to mention Krabi province as a whole. Located in southern Thailand, bordering the Andaman Sea, Krabi is home to many of the beautiful beaches and islands that make Thailand famous.

"I've been booking many [trips to] Krabi lately," said Ekelund. "It ticks a lot of boxes for people. You've got the beauty, cool cliffs, and interesting geology. It has a beach, but it's for people who don't want to simply park it on the sand for 10 days. Krabi offers activities and more." Some highlights include the beach town of Ao Nang, as well as islands like Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Yai, Koh Lipe, Railay Beach, and several national parks.

Koh Yao Noi

My first trip to Thailand was to the small island of Koh Yao Noi back in 2013. One of the most beautiful islands in Phang Nga Bay, Koh Yao Noi is flecked off the coast of its sibling island, Koh Yao Yai. Sandy beaches and small fishing villages comprise most of the land here, along with the luxe Six Senses Yao Noi resort tucked along the eastern coast. The property’s infinity pool is legendary for its explosive sunrise views that blur the distinction between the sky and sea.

Many Thai cities have the ability to make visitors feel like they’re stepping back in time. But few create the illusion as vividly as Ayutthaya. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam, the ruins of Ayutthaya are breathtaking and hauntingly beautiful. It’s only an hour from Bangkok, making it an easy day trip or a great overnight excursion.

Sukhothai is another beautiful ancient city. "Sukhothai is for people who like history. I was taken by how beautiful the area is and how extensive the ruins are," said Ekelund. "We cycled around the ruins with a guide and got a great sense of the history. Sukhothai is much more rural and harder to reach, meaning it has fewer tourists. You also don't have a city built up around it."

Mae Hong Son Loop

Of all the places I've visited in Thailand, none stick with me as much as the Mae Hong Son Loop. This 300-mile route is most often tackled by travelers on the back of motorbikes looking to brave the mountain switchbacks that descend into the thick jungle and pass from small village to small village. It's not a journey to be taken lightly — motorbike experience is strongly recommended — but those who make the trip are rewarded with spectacular scenery and access to remote communities.

Khao Yai National Park

Thailand has more than 100 national parks. The oldest is Khao Yai National Park, which also happens to be the country's third-largest. Within the park lies a web of hiking trails, secret waterfalls, and herds of elephants.

"Khao Yai has a lot of bat caves, too, which is one of the coolest things I've ever experienced," said Ekelund. "I stood there for 30 minutes while an unending stream of bats flew over my head. It was all so beautiful. It's a beautiful park with waterfalls, trekking, and hiking. Plus, it's just a couple of hours [by car] from Bangkok."

Approximately two hours southeast of Chiang Mai is the city of Lampang. Much like many large cities in Thailand, Lampang has its fair share of temples, street food, and markets. But unlike the others, it feels like a place where time has stood still. Just listen for the sound of clip-clopping horse carts, still used for transportation, and you'll understand what I mean. Because of Lampang's integral role in the teak trade, many migrants from Myanmar made this northern city home, and you'll find teak mansions and Burmese-style temples everywhere.

Chiang Rai, a northern Thai city, is often glossed over as most visitors opt to stop in Chiang Mai instead. "I am always struck by how chill Chiang Rai is," said Ekelund. "It's a relaxing place to be and has cool stuff to do. It's a great city to walk through the neighborhoods and see people living their daily lives. I enjoyed the mountains, nearby villages, and opportunities for cultural exchange."

No list of best places to visit in Thailand would be complete without Phuket. While Phuket has a reputation for being crowded with resort after resort, the truth is it’s for a reason — the island is a beautiful place to be. Thailand's largest and most easily accessible island brings visitors in by the millions each year for its wide array of hotels, white-sand beaches, parties in Patong, colorful snorkeling, and eclectic culinary scene.

Thailand’s second most popular island sits off the country’s eastern coast in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Samui is wreathed in bone-white sandy beaches, peppered with temples, veined with hiking trails, and splashed with fabulous resorts and energetic beach towns and villages.

"It's hard to beat Koh Samui. It's just beautiful," said Ekelund. "If you want easy access without a full resort stay, I recommend Anantara Bophut . You can walk to Fisherman's Village, and you won’t feel like you're 'stuck' at a resort. If you want a full resort experience, I like Banyan Tree Samui for its private beach and spectacular rooms."

The tiny island of Koh Tao, located in the Gulf of Thailand and not too far from Koh Samui, is one of the country’s best locations for diving and snorkeling. In fact, most avid divers will tell you that Koh Tao is their destination of choice in Thailand. The palm-fringed island is best known for its abundance of sea turtles.

Kanchanaburi

Shrouded in thick jungle and sliced by miles of track belonging to what was once known as the “Death Railway,” Kanchanaburi has a dark and tragic history. The infamous train route, which crosses the River Kwai, was built from 1940 to 1943 by prisoners of war taken by the Japanese in World War II. Today, only a small section of the rail route is open and takes travelers on a journey through the mountain cliffs and bamboo forests of Kanchanaburi. "If you're into history, beautiful vistas, trains, and wildlife, you can get all of that in Kanchanaburi. It's a place not many tourists go, either, so it has a lot to offer," said Ekelund.

Trang is the province directly south of Krabi, which means it has the same beautiful stretch of Andaman Sea coastline, except with a fraction of the crowds. There’s no shortage of islands to explore around Trang, like Koh Kradan and Koh Muk. Koh Muk's crown jewel is the secret Emerald Cave, which can be entered via a dark tunnel that leads to a protected beach surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.

Located in the province of Phang Nga, Khao Lak can be thought of as Phuket’s much quieter cousin. Less than two hours from Phuket International Airport, Khao Lak is home to miles of sprawling, empty beaches, plus it offers easy access to beautiful national parks.

"I've been hyping Khao Lak quite a bit for people who want something quieter," said Ekelund. "You have easy access to the Phuket International Airport, but it's much more chill than the other Andaman Islands. It has beautiful beaches, good infrastructure, a great spot for dining, and it’s not hard to get to."

Whether or not you drive the Mae Hong Son Loop, you’ll want to stop in Pai when visiting northern Thailand. Once a sleepy community of expats, Pai has morphed into a must-visit backpacker destination. Visitors will find funky cafes and coffee shops, endless bars, guest houses, hostels, and a dispensary or two, particularly now that cannabis is no longer considered a narcotic in the country.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

South of Bangkok, the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan is best known for the glamorous, frenetic beach town of Hua Hin. The province runs down the skinny arm of the country, bordering the Gulf of Thailand on one side and Myanmar on the other. Here’s where you'll find Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Thailand's first marine national park. The park's top attractions include a series of spectacular caves and a sprawling freshwater marsh. Visitors can enjoy the park’s beaches, islands, walking trails, and thick mangrove forests. It’s just an hour from Hua Hin and about 3.5 hours from Bangkok.

This long, skinny island, also in the province of Krabi, flies under the radar, but it’s one of my favorite places in the country. Koh Lanta is home to beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and the Mu Ko Lanta National Park, an amazing spot for diving and seeing undeveloped beaches.

Middle East: Is it safe to travel to holiday destinations as tension escalates?

Are you going to Turkey, Egypt or Israel on holiday? The Foreign Office has warned travellers to several countries to monitor advice after an Iranian attack on Israel pushed tension in the Middle East up another notch.

Tension in the Middle East has ratcheted up again after Iran's attack on Israel, as the world waits to see how Benjamin Netanyahu's government will respond.

With the threat of widening conflict, people due to travel through or over the Middle East may be asking if their plans may be impacted.

On Saturday, flight data showed dozens of journeys that would have travelled over the Middle East turned back after Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles into Israel .

Here is what airlines are saying and the latest safety advice to travellers.

EasyJet scraps Tel Aviv flights

EasyJet has suspended all flights to Tel Aviv over safety concerns.

The budget airline told Sky News it has grounded its flights until 27 October at the earliest "as a result of the continued evolving situation" in the region.

Wizz Air customers could see schedule changes

Wizz Air cancelled flights to Tel Aviv on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 April before resuming its schedule.

But it said customers could experience schedule changes as it closely monitors the situation.

British Airways operating as normal

British Airways - which operates four daily return flights per week between Heathrow and Tel Aviv - said its flights were continuing to operate as planned, but it too was monitoring the situation.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Turkey is a popular holiday destination for people from the UK with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism saying that last year 3.16 million Britons made the journey there, according to Travel Weekly.

Yet, it borders a number of countries that the Foreign Office advises against travel to.

The vast majority of the country is considered generally safe for tourists, with some exceptions.

The Foreign Office advises against all travel within 10km of the border with Syria , and all but essential travel to the Sirnak and Hakkari provinces.

Is it safe to travel to Israel?

Some parts of Israel are considered "red zones" by the Foreign Office, with the government advising against all travel there.

For the rest of the country - including East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - the advice is to travel only if it is essential.

Tourist Israel says around 220,000 Britons usually go to the country every year and the Foreign Office is advising against travel close to the border with Gaza, within 5km of the border with Lebanon and within 500m of the border with Syria.

Can I safely go on holiday in Egypt?

The main tourist areas in Egypt are generally considered safe, including the capital Cairo, cities along the Nile and Red Sea resorts.

Over 1.5 million British Nationals visit Egypt every year, according to analysts Gitnux, and the areas the Foreign Office warns not to travel to include the Governorate of North Sinai, where the Rafah crossing to Gaza is located, and within 20km of the border with Libya.

Following Iran's attack on Israel, the Foreign Office issued a warning relating to several countries in the surrounding area, telling travellers to check for the latest information.

Included in this are popular destinations like Dubai (visited by more than a million Britons last year according to Travel Weekly) and Marrakech.

"On 13 April 2024 Iran carried out military action against Israel. Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast," the FCDO said in a statement.

The countries covered by the warning include Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Jordan and Oman.

Anywhere else of concern?

Cyprus is near the region and has a large UK airbase but, as yet, there is no change in travel advice to the popular country.

On CEOWORLD magazine’s list of “World’s Best Countries To Visit In Your Lifetime 2024”, Thailand is ranked top, according to Government Spokesman Chai Wacharonke.

The ranking is based on feedback from over 295,000 readers, making it the highest level of participation in the magazine’s history.

According to CEOWORLD, Thailand offers a diverse range of experiences, such as wild nightlife, delicious food, vibrant art and culture, great shopping options, winding rivers and canals, Buddhist temples and night markets. Visitors can also visit more peaceful locations in Bangkok, such as Bang Krachao Island.

The rankings are:

1. Thailand, 72.15%

2. Greece, 67.22%

3. Indonesia, 65.15%

4. Portugal, 64.32%

5. Sri Lanka, 60.54%

6. South Africa, 59.76%

7. Peru, 59.76%

8. Italy, 57.77%

9. India. 57.65%

10. The United Arab Emirates, 57.38%

Responding to the survey results, Chai said that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has confidence in the potential of Thailand and the government has promoted all aspects of tourism, to develop the country into a tourism hub for the region.

Apple Announces 'Let Loose' Event on May 7 Amid Rumors of New iPads

Apple has announced it will be holding a special event on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 a.m. Pacific Time (10 a.m. Eastern Time), with a live stream to be available on Apple.com and on YouTube as usual. The event invitation has a tagline of "Let Loose" and shows an artistic render of an Apple Pencil, suggesting that iPads will be a focus of the event.

During the event, Apple is expected to announce new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, along with updated Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories.

Here is everything that has been rumored:

Two new iPad Pro models with the M3 chip, OLED displays, a thinner enclosure , thinner bezels , a matte screen option , a landscape-oriented front camera , other design changes, and possibly MagSafe wireless charging .
Two new iPad Air models with the M2 chip and a landscape-oriented front camera , including a first-ever 12.9-inch iPad Air with a mini-LED display .
A new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro with an aluminum enclosure , larger trackpad, and other design tweaks.
A new Apple Pencil , which may have a new "squeeze" gesture for certain actions and support visionOS eventually .

Apple has not released any new iPads since late 2022, so this event has been a long time coming. The event will take place just over a month before Apple's annual developers conference WWDC, which runs from June 10 through June 14 .

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.
