Jhalana Leopard Safari: A Complete Guide

Where is jhalana leopard safari park.

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, or Jhalana Leopard Reserve, is located right at the heart of Jaipur. It is extremely unique in its close proximity to such a busy and populated city. Jaipur is home to around 4.3 million people, and Jhalana is located directly adjacent to the chaos.

It is India’s first leopard reserve and was only established in 2017. Since then, this 23 sq km park has become one of the best places to see wild leopards in India. And it is only a 15-30 minute drive from the centre of Jaipur.

The boundary between city and nature is extremely abrupt here. There is no gradual transition from city life into nature. Instead, the park boundary lies directly next to the hustle and bustle of the city itself. This makes the leopards of Jhalana quite unique in their proximity and ability to adapt to urban life.

So much so that leopards will often leave the reserve for the city streets; there, under the cover of darkness, they search the streets in the hunt for stray dogs and domestic pigs – an easier source of prey than the wild antelope and deer within the reserve.

On the odd occasion, leopards can find themselves in very unexpected places. This is no more evident than in 2019 when one ventured into a local school, wandering from classroom to classroom and making its home in one of the old buildings for over a week before being tranquillised and relocated back to the reserve. Imagine that – your school being temporarily closed due to a leopard taking residence inside.

Getting there from central Jaipur

Getting there from Jaipur is really simple – Uber and Ola both operate in Jaipur so you can always order a cab or rickshaw via the app. Otherwise, it is pretty easy to find a rickshaw on the street or ask your hotel for transport.

We actually organised our morning pick up via our hotel for 300Rp (~£3.00) for the 15-minute ride from the C-Scheme area (we didn’t want to risk being stuck unable to book an Uber at 5:15 AM).

We ordered Ubers for the morning return trip, and also for our evening pick up and drop off. This cost us around 150Rp (~£1.50) per trip, so was our preferred option. See the directions from Jaipur Junction Railway Station to Jhalana below:

What can you see at Jhalana Leopard Safari Park?

As the name suggests, leopards are the primary focus at Jhalana. The reserve is a stronghold for leopards and there are estimated to be around 45 individuals in the reserve, including around 5 cubs.

Other species that you can see at Jhalana include other carnivores such as Striped Hyena, Golden Jackal, Desert Fox, Jungle Cat, Desert Cat, Rusty-spotted Cat, Indian Civet and Mongoose. In addition to ungulates such as Nilgai, Spotted Deer and Sambar Deer. As well as a whole host of reptiles and birds. Most notably the gorgeous and iconic peacock and some beautiful owls. Unfortunately, the last tiger in this area was shot in 1948.

We were one of the lucky ones who were fortunate enough to see a hyena during our safari at Jhalana. The Striped Hyena ( Hyaena hyaena ) is highly nocturnal and usually much rarer to see than the leopards. There are only around 20 individual hyenas in the reserve and we managed to spot this mother sleeping at the entrance of her den – an amazing experience!

Jhalana is home to a total of 32 mammals species, over 150 bird species and 20 species of reptiles. Below is a list of some of the highlight species found there.

What is the best time to visit Jhalana?

Seasons and climate.

Jhalana is located in the North of India, and so has a subtropical climate. There are three main seasons, Winter, Summer and Monsoon. Winter runs from November to February, before the heat begins to increase with a hot Summer from March to June. Then a warm monsoon season runs from July through to October.

Winter is a great time to visit due to the manageable heat and dry weather. However, summer months are often very productive for leopards due to the greater need for them to visit watering holes to drink.

Time of Day

Safaris are available as Morning or Evening sessions. The times of these slightly vary depending on time of year and sunrise/sunset times but roughly they will be a 2.5 hour safari at sunrise or at sunset.

The above table shows the start and finish times of Morning/Evening safaris based on date (as given on the permit tickets). HOWEVER, these times are not always followed!!!

We were there on 15th February and arrived at 5:30am, only for the safari to actually run from 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM (morning) and 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM (evening). So it is probably best to arrive early and wait in the waiting room or gallery just in case the times are different to those listed on your permit.

Morning or Evening Safari?

The ideal time of day for your safari actually depends upon the season. In the summer months, morning safaris are generally better due to leopards being a lot less active once the afternoon heat sets in. Therefore leopards are a lot more likely to be seen in the mornings before the intense summer heat builds too much in the day.

During the winter, however, evening safaris are considered to be more successful due to leopards being active in the more mild afternoons where they will come out in search for water.

We suggest doing a morning and evening safari if possible to maximise your chance of seeing the best wildlife. You will have a good 5+ hours in between, and because of Jhalana’s close proximity to the city, it is more than enough time to hop in a quick ~15 minute rickshaw back to your hotel to rest or do some exploring around the city.

How to book tickets for Jhalana Leopard Safari?

Booking tickets for Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, as for any safari in India, can be extremely confusing, especially for tourists. The information available online is extremely limited, and there are countless “scam” agency websites online claiming to be the official booking page – but overcharging for the tickets at extortionate and upscaled rates.

Therefore it is always best to book through the official government website, as this will avoid any agency costs for the booking and save you a lot of money.

Official website: Forest Department, Government of Rajasthan

As for all safaris in India, it is best to book through the official government website for that region. This will save you a ton of money instead of booking through an agency that will charge a much inflated rate.

The current cost of a Jhalana safari, as of February 2024, is 1154 INR (~£11) per person. This is the price for one 2.5 hour morning or evening safari. So if you wish to book the morning and evening, then it will cost you double that for the day.

The website to use for booking the Jhalana Leopard Safari (and also for the world-famous tiger reserve: Ranthambore National Park) is the official Forest Department, Government of Rajasthan website: https://sso.rajasthan.gov.in/ .

Quick Tip – I wasn’t able to use the website on my phone as it wouldn’t let me click anything to even login. So all of this had to be done using my laptop.

Registration

  • Visit the website: https://sso.rajasthan.gov.in/
  • Click Registration > Citizen > sign up via Google account
  • Edit your username and set a password. Then use email to register and click register!
  • Now log in and you will be asked to update some details (name, email, gender, DOB)

Finding the booking page

  • Login and navigate to the Rajasthan SSO homepage
  • Find and click “Forest & Wildlife” application. Then “Wildlife Tourism”
  • From here, select the location of the reserve you wish to book – ‘Jhalana/Amagarh Leopard Conservation Reserve,Jaipur Jhalana’

Checking price & availability

  • Check fee details. Enter number of people and press submit (as of Feb 2024, one 2.5 hour safari will cost you 1154 INR [~£11] per person)
  • Check availability – select date, fill in Captcha and submit
  • Here you can see the number of Gypsy (jeep) safari seats available for the chosen date for morning and evening safaris

Booking your safari

  • Click book now and you will be taken to the booking screen.
  • Select place – Jhalana > Input desired date > Choose morning or evening (if you wish to do both, you will have to repeat the process and book each separately) > Choose vehicle (Gypsy only at Jhalana)
  • Now fill in the passenger details and agree to disclaimer. Make sure you use the correct passport number and bring your passport with you for your safari as they check ID’s!
  • Finally, “Pay Now” > Aggregator > Razor Pay (for foreign VISA / Mastercards)
  • DO NOT click off the page or anything when the payment is going through otherwise your booking may fail!

Downloading your permits

  • Navigate to the “Wildlife Tourism” section again ( https://fmdss.forest.rajasthan.gov.in/Dashboard/Dashboard )
  • You will have to sign in again and potentially have to navigate back through to the “Book Now” part you did earlier for the booking part.
  • From here, instead of entering the details to book a new safari, under “Citizen Dashboard” on the left, click the “Wildlife Tourism Services” and then “Permit Booking History” (see figure below)
  • Choose Jhalana from the dropdown and your “Jhalana Booking History” should open as a new tab (if you can’t see the page, check your laptop hasn’t blocked the pop up. Mine automatically blocked it and I had to click to manually allow it to open)
  • You should now be on the permit booking history page for Jhalana.
  • Click “Download ticket” for each ticket you have and save it as a PDF. We saved the PDF file names in the format *place_date_time* so “Jhalana_15th_AM” and “Jhalana_15th_PM” to easily differentiate them from the other bookings.

What to bring?

First of all, make sure you bring your Passport or ID that you used when making the booking. This will be checked to ensure it matches the ID on the booking at both the ticket booth, and again as you enter the park.

It also said to bring a printed copy of your booking permit, which we did bring and showed at the ticket booth to collect our ticket with the allocated driver details etc., but other locals in the queue were just showing the permit screenshot on their phone and that seemed to be fine (though I can’t guarantee that this will always be accepted for foreigners too).

Jhalana can be pretty cold in the winter so make sure you have some warm layers for the early morning and late evening chills. The open safari vehicles mean that you will feel the full force of the winter air rushing past as you drive through the reserve so it definitely gets a lot colder than you expect. However, once that sun has risen, you should warm up and probably want to lose a few layers.

  • Passport ID
  • Permit printout
  • Warm layers

What to expect: our day at Jhalana

Our visit to Jhalana was on 15th February 2024. We didn’t find out about Jhalana until relatively late in our planning, so unfortunately we were only able to spend one day there, where we did both the morning and evening safari.

First of all, our ticket said the safari was 6:15 AM – 8:45 AM (morning) and 3:45 PM – 6:15 PM (evening), and to arrive 45 minutes before the start time. We therefore arrived at 5:30 AM, but there was nobody in sight. Luckily they have a waiting room, gallery and toilet all next to one another to the right hand side of the main gate.

It wasn’t until around 6:00 AM that we saw anybody. And even then, they just informed us that the safari was in fact starting at 7:00 AM. Annoying considering we had arrived a whole 1.5 hours before this start time and 1 hour before the ticket booth even opened.

It made sense though as had we started at 6:15 AM, the first 30-45 minutes would have been in darkness due to the sunrise time (just a shame they have the wrong times listed on the ticket). Our evening safari was also a different time (4:00 PM start instead of 3:45 PM) but luckily we learned this from the drivers during our morning safari and so were prepared and didn’t arrive so early for the evening session.

So at 6:30 AM, as the ticket booth opened right next to the main gate entrance, we walked over and queued. We handed over our booking permit slip and waited for the man to enter all of our details and print off another form with our safari driver/jeep info. We showed it to one of the drivers who passed us on to the right driver who showed us where his jeep was and had a chat. Then 10 minutes later we got in the jeep ready to go at around 6:50 AM.

Now we drove through the main gate and waited where our passports were checked and matched with the booking details. Here we waited until it hit 7:00 AM and we were off on our adventure.

As we set off, the driver informed us that we won’t be stopping for more common animals that can easily be seen throughout the day. This is so that we can spend as much time as possible searching for leopards and hyenas before the sun comes up. We did a similar thing for our safaris in Sri Lanka.

We were not fortunate enough to see any leopards during our morning safari, but we did still have an amazing time. We were first really excited to see the bizarre-looking and massive antelope species – the nilgai, which is something we had read up on and were really hoping to see. Turned out they were pretty common, so we saw loads of them throughout the day.

Other species we enjoyed watching were grey langurs, a scops owl, black-winged kites, peacocks, and best of all – a striped hyena!!!

We got back to the carpark at around 09:30 AM and booked ourself an Uber back to our hotel. 25 minutes later we were back and ready to have a nap and relax after the early wake up. After this we had some lunch and relaxed, before booking another Uber back to Jhalana at 3:30 PM for our evening session starting at 4:00 PM.

Our evening safari was equally great and we started it off seeing a beautifully camouflaged jungle nightjar perched on a branch just to the side of the track. Again we saw lots of interesting animals, but no leopard… Or at least we thought that until literally the last minute.

It hit 6:29 PM and we were almost back at the carpark. When all of a sudden we saw three jeeps parked and all of the guests standing up and looking in one direction. The excitement picked up and one of the drivers told us that there was a leopard in the long grass. After around 30 seconds of looking and wondering where this leopard was, we finally set our eyes on the insanely well camouflaged creature in the hazy evening light. We spent around 5 minutes watching the leopard before it walked off out of sight into the jungle. What an end to an already amazing day!

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, in our opinion, is an absolute must visit if you are visiting Jaipur. Located right at the heart of Jaipur, it so simple to get to and you don’t have to worry about travelling to a far off remote location to see some incredible wildlife that is otherwise very difficult to see.

The fact that just a 15-30 minute drive out from the centre of Jaipur can bring you to a place teeming with wild leopards and hyenas, makes Jhalana an extremely unique and important place – one that all wildlife lovers need to visit.

Booking Jhalana can be pretty confusing, especially amongst the sea of agents and scams trying to overcharge you 2 or 3 times the price, or even worse, sell you fake tickets. Therefore, it is best to book directly through the government website – which we have given a step-by-step guide for above. If not, you can always book through your hotel if you don’t want to brave the government website – though they will most likely take a commission fee which can vary depending on your hotel.

Getting there from Jaipur is simple and cheap. You should be able to book yourself an Uber or find a rickshaw to take you there from anywhere in Jaipur for roughly 150-300 Rp. Otherwise, you can always ask your accommodation to help you with transport, which may be more expensive but should be more reliable (especially for the early morning transport to the reserve). It took us 15 minutes to get there in the morning but the journey back and evening journeys took around 30 minutes due to traffic – so give yourself enough time!

Overall, it is an absolutely amazing place to visit, especially due to the ease of getting there and low cost. Leopards are quite common to see and our guide told us that they see them most days. But even without seeing leopards, for wildlife lovers, it is an amazing place with a whole host of other cool creatures.

Jhalana Leopard Safari in Jaipur [Tips, Hotels, Booking]

Jhalana national park in Jaipur is one of its kind in India as it is the only park with leopards as the apex predators. In a state dominated by tigers, forts and deserts, leopards have made a gala entry. Within a short span of three years (2013-2016), leopard population in this protected area grew from a mere eight cats, to a whopping thirty.

The very first Jhalana leopard safari was conducted in May 2017 based on the tiger tourism module in other parks. Nowadays, up to 10 jeeps are allowed per morning and afternoon safari daily inside the Jhalana forest reserve.

What to Expect on a Jhalana Leopard Safari

Jhalana has around 30 leopards in an area of 75 sq. km so chances are sightings will be extremely good. In fact, as most guides and tour agents claim, you have over 90% chance of spotting the elusive leopard in this park. However, with wildlife there are never any guarantees, so visit with an open mind and enjoy the jungles.

jhalana national park jaipur

There are several reasons which lead to Jhalana being one of the top parks for leopard sightings in India. The primary reason is that leopards are apex predators in this forest. As such they have zero competition for prey and are much more confident and less shy. The other reason is the size of the park, if you compare it to tiger reserves in the state, Jhalana is way smaller so the leopard density per sq. km is pretty high, giving you better chances of sighting one in the wild here.

jhalana leopard safari

For me, personally, after decades of safaris in tiger reserves all over India, I had only ever managed to spot the elusive leopard cat a handful of times. However, in Jhalana – we had not just one but three excellent sightings. Plus, thanks to the expert guidance of Anurag from TigerWalah , we were almost always the very first ones to sight the cat.

leopard cat in jhalana

Anyone who has ever been in a wildlife park in India can pretty much vouch that it is no fun sighting a tiger or leopard with 20 jeeps surrounding it and several loud people scurrying around their jeeps to find the best spot/angle. So private sightings are that much more rewarding, and with the trained eyes of Anurag, we got lucky not once but thrice in one day!

Watching that elusive hunter no more than a few meters away from my jeep, made this one of the best days in the bush for me.  Speaking from three decades of experience, scouring the jungles of India, I can confidently say the people behind TigerWalah know wild feline behavior and have tracking down to the T.

jhalana forest jaipur

Check out this video for an idea of what to expect, though I must add it took a lot of luck and good tracking work by Anurag for us to catch this wild cat having some fun by the water –

Alongside leopards, you can also spot an array of foxes, blue bulls, wild boars and several species of birds in Jhalana forest. This jungle is also home to two wild hyenas but you have to be extremely lucky to spot them. We did find their footprints near a water hole but had no luck spotting them.

Grey Partridge

With two operational gates in Jhalana, one has a better habitat for leopards but the other happens to be the best for sightings. Unlike at other parks, you can move around freely here within the stipulated safari time frame (without any zone/ gate restrictions).

Best time to Visit Jhalana Park?

Jhalana is the only national park in India , which is open throughout the year. This makes it a good option for those yearning for the jungles during the monsoons and sightings are excellent throughout the year.

How to Book Jhalana Leopard Safari?

In order to book your Jhalana leopard safari with TigerWalah, simply fill out the booking request form  and you will get a custom quote based on your dates and requirement.

You can easily get the Jhalana leopard safari price and book online on the official government website. However, I would highly recommend going through an expert like TigerWalah for the best safari experience. Their quotes would include services of an experienced guide trained to track wild cats, Jhalana safari entry fee, Jhalana safari charges and fun anecdotes of the wild to keep you entertained.

Where to Stay in Jaipur for Jhalana Safari?

The pink city of Jaipur offers all sorts of accommodation options for every budget and travel style. Since Jhalana is a small park and doesn’t exactly have any wildlife lodges popping up around every corner, I would recommend staying in a nice hotel.

Usually, everyone who visits Jhalana, flocks to Malviya Nagar which is just a couple of kms from the entrance gate. Since we always prefer doing what most don’t, we chose the luxurious property of Fairmont .

The grand Fairmont Jaipur

Even though it is relatively far from Jhalana, most safari operators offer free pick and drop from any hotel in Jaipur (best to check this with your operator prior to booking). Also, isn’t it way better to stay further from the crowds? For me, it’s always a big plus to have a serene location.

Fairmont Jaipur Review

Set in the lovely backdrop of Aravalli hills, Fairmont Jaipur is simply exceptional. Its close proximity to Delhi makes it a favorite for Delhites looking for a peaceful, luxury getaway.

My parents and I were given two huge deluxe rooms with a view to die for. As soon as I stepped into my room, the feeling of Rajputana  royalty and grandeur overwhelmed me.

Opulent rooms at Fairmont

It felt like I was stepping into a time machine and back to the Mughal era. Everything oozed opulence, from the jharokhas I could see from my window to the sumptuous room and the spacious bathroom with the biggest bath tub I have ever seen.

bathroom fairmont jaipur

Such grand settings, made me want to spend more time in the hotel than actually in Jhalana (which is a lot to say as wildlife is my number one love).

fairmont rooms

My second favorite part of the hotel was the lovely setting by the sprawling swimming pool and its adjoining grounds.

fairmont pool

The gold lounge has special access for members only. I got super lucky and was allowed to take a quick peak and it was surely worth it. The views from the lounge veranda were undoubtedly the best.

gold lounge fairmont

My top dining experience at Fairmont was at the fusion restaurant – Zarin . Everything from the impeccable decor to the delectable fare surpassed my expectations.

We also enjoyed a few delicious meals at the all day dining restaurant – Zoya and the buffet breakfast spread was so extensive that I seriously considered shrinking my plans for the day and just overdosing on calories. Alas, my hankering for adventure won out.

Lovely outdoor seating at Zoya

From the smiling staff to the ever helpful management, Fairmont gave us one of the best luxury hotel experiences we had all year. As it is Rajasthani royalty and charm cannot be surpassed and Fairmont ticked all the right boxes.

The evolutionary traits like social behavior can be well documented on camera where it is not uncommon to see females living in small groups with their current siblings and old litters. The jungle has its own charm in all the seasons be it the harsh summers, the monsoon rains or the chilly winters.

The leopards here have adapted well to avoid confrontation with their own kind and also keep a line of distance from humans too therefore they are now termed as the Urban Leopards which are smarter and suaver.

Book a leopard safari with Nature Wanderers to get a glimpse of the life on the urban leopard and its forest.

Masai Mara National Park

With three rivers passing through, the Masai Mara National Reserve is known for its large populations of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, apart from the stunning Great Migration. Locally called The Mara, these plains are a part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, which majorly constitutes of vast savannah grasslands along with acacia and bush vegetation. This landscape is home to a diverse selection of magnificent species and the landscape offers unhindered views stretched to the horizon. The clouds create magic in the sky and the ‘golden hour’ in the Masai emerges twice every day with ample opportunities to photograph stunning scenery and wildlife in their natural habitat. The light on the horizon creates magical hues and perfect backdrops for breathtaking imagery.

Each year, millions of grazing herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and other antelopes embark on a clockwise migration through the African plains.

Amboseli National Park

With Africa’s highest peak, the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the background, Amboseli National Park is best known for getting up and close with African Elephants. The park is dotted with swampland and savannah grasslands which results is a great opportunity to track and spot wildlife. The habitat also includes sulfur springs and dry lake beds. The majority of the wildlife can be encountered around the permanent swamp areas, which form a natural marshy belt in the middle of the park. These marshes are a favorite of the elephants which love to wallow in the mud, while the hippos can be seen around the edges.

The visual delight of photographing large herds of bush Elephants against the backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro is only possible here. Amboseli is another location in Kenya to observe and photograph the Big Five.

Tsavo East And Tsavo West

Famous for being ‘The Big Five’ location, Tsavo East and Tsavo West together make up the Tsavo Conservation Area. Named for the Tsavo river, the two parks are divided into two by a road and railway tracks that run across the area. Tsavo East is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya, famous for the Tsavo Lions, a population where the males are often seen lacking the distinguished manes. Even after having a large river passing through the landscape, Tsavo East has sparse and thinly spread foliage, which makes wildlife spotting much easier here.

This half of the park has many geographical attractions as well. The Mudanda Rock is an excellent vantage point to spot herds of Elephants as this isolated rock hill acts as a water catchment and becomes a natural dam. Running a length of 290 km and made by the world’s longest lava flow, the Yatta plateau is another surreal landscape to visit.

Lake Nakuru

The Rift Valley Lakes in Africa is one of the deepest, oldest and largest lakes in the world. Known for its massive flocks of Greater and Lesser Flamingoes, Lake Nakuru is one of the most famous of these soda lakes. A bushy and sparsely wooded grassland surrounds the lake and this habitat offers a wide range of ecological diversity, including a large population of big game species. A large number of flamingoes often seem like a moving, shifting mass of fuchsia pink, covering the lake surface. Their numbers can reach up to more than one million individuals, making this one of the greatest bird spectacles on earth. Waterbuck can be easily spotted here and the lake boasts of a large variety of both water and terrestrial bird species, a total of about 450. The area also attracts mammals like the rare Rothschild’s Giraffe, baboons, Dik Dik, rhinos, Lions, Cheetahs, and Leopards.

jhalana leopard safari blog

Lake Bogoria

Another location is known for its large flocks of Lesser Flamingoes and Greater Flamingoes, Lake Bogoria is a saline body of water which lies in a volcanic area. This location hosts one of world’s largest Lesser Flamingo populations at times. The lake is backed by the Siracho Escarpment on one side and surrounded by geysers and hot springs, which can erupt as high as five meters. The area can get really hot during the day and the best times to visit are early mornings and evenings. The lake can be explored on foot as well and the only wooded area towards the southern end hosts species like Leopards, greater Kudu, Caracals, Buffaloes, and Gazelles.

With thick riverine forests, acacia and palm groves, Samburu National Reserve is one of the two areas made famous in the book Born Free. The park is a lowland area and is not visited by too many tourists, making it a peaceful and serene setting for great game drives. The Ewaso Ngiro river is one of the main locations as it is the main water source for the majority of the animal species in this otherwise arid and dry park. The Samburu National Reserve was made famous by a lioness who had adopted oryx calves. Many of the game species of the Northern Kenyan wilderness can be seen in Samburu’s habitat. Apart from the three big cats- Leopards, East African Lions, and the Tanzanian Cheetah, Samburu is home to the Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Oryx, and the Grevy’s Zebra. The park also hosts a large array of bird species, including the Secretary bird and various vultures. The river banks are ideal for spotting crocodile populations and herds of elephants as well.

jhalana leopard safari blog

Nairobi National Park

Close to the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi National Park provides the distinct opportunity to view and photograph African wildlife in the backdrop of a cityscape. This is a unique visual combination where wild animals can be photographed with modern man-made structures in the composition. Due to this discrepancy, the park offers one of the oddest yet easily accessible game drive experiences. The Nairobi National Park is also known to have the world’s densest population of the endangered Black Rhinos. The park has a diverse range of habitat, which plays a key role in the sustenance of the various species found here. Along with open grasslands, bush forests, long grass, and rocky valleys, Nairobi National Park is also dotted with scrubs and acacia and a river system. This results in a wide variety of bird species, apart from hosting Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Hyenas, Giraffes, Antelopes, and Buffaloes. Spotting the resident Cheetahs and Leopards requires a bit of patience in this park, but the lions and Hyenas are sighted regularly.

Jhalana Leopard Safari Jaipur Timing

Jhalana Leopard Safari Tourist Attraction

Jhalana Leopard Safari timing s : Things to Consider

The tourists are taken on a safari in Jhalana Forest Reserve in two shifts – one in the morning and the other in the evening. While the exact timing might change with the season, here is the most common timing for all seasons.

Needless to say, you stay in the jungle for nearly two and a half hours. This duration may also slightly change depending on the weather conditions and season.

It is always a good practice to reach the Jhalana reserve entry gate on time because the entry and exit are strictly monitored by the forest department. If you are too late, you would miss the gypsy that you have booked for the leopard safari.

Keep in mind that it’s a wildlife destination so the park might be closed for visitors in special circumstances without prior notice. But it rarely happens.

Best time to visit Jhalana Leopard Safari

Unlike many other wildlife destinations such as Ranthambore National Park and Sariska Tiger Reserve, the Jhalana leopard Safari is open to tourists throughout the year. Ranthambore and Sariska are kept closed during the monsoon season when it’s mating time for the tigers. However, there are no such restrictions for Jhalana.

The best time to visit Jhalana is from October to March when the weather is not too hot. You can also consider visiting Jhalana during the monsoon season if you love greenery and natural surroundings. You should probably avoid visiting the forest reserve during the summer months because the weather is too hot, but an advantage of visiting from April to June is that you may have a better chance of spotting a leopard as they are more likely to stay close to water bodies in the reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

There might be a slight change in the timing depending on the season. For example, tourists are taken on safari earlier in the morning and later in the evening during the summer months compared to the winter months.

It’s too hot during the summer months in Jaipur. The temperature can reach 45 degrees Celsius, but since the safari starts early, you can visit the reserve in the morning shift which might start as early as 5.45 am. The advantage of visiting during the summer months is that the chances of spotting a leopard near a water body are better.

Leopards of Rajasthan – Jawai, Bera, Jhalana, Sariska, Kumbhalgarh

Published by team nsi on 23/02/2023 23/02/2023.

Leopards are widespread over the globe and may be seen in many different nations, including India. Leopards are abundant across India, inhabiting a wide range of forest types, grasslands, and hilly regions, from dry deciduous woodlands to moist evergreen forests, and from the grasslands of the Deccan Plateau to the foothills of the Himalayas.

In addition to deer, monkeys, wild boars, and domestic livestock like goats and sheep, the diet of an Indian leopard may include a wide variety of other animals. They will attack everything that moves. Furthermore, they are notorious for their predation on birds and rodents. Leopards are solitary predators that are feared for their speed, cunning, and ability to bring down animals much larger than themselves.

Leopards in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is one of the states in India with a high population of leopards. The reasons why there are so many leopards in Rajasthan are multifactorial and complex. Here are some of the key reasons:

  • Habitat : Leopards may thrive in the varied environment of Rajasthan, which includes grasslands, rocky areas, and dry deciduous woods. The abundance of food and shelter in these environments is crucial to the leopards’ success.
  • Prey Availability : Leopards have a wide variety of favored prey in Rajasthan, including chinkara, sambar deer, blue bull, and wild boar. As there is a plentiful supply of animals leopards can feed on, the leopard population has flourished there.
  • Conservation Efforts : Many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries have been created in Rajasthan to save the local fauna. Leopard populations in the region have been preserved, and their natural habitats have been safeguarded, thanks in large part to the existence of these preserves.
  • Human-Leopard Conflicts : The leopards in Rajasthan have adapted to living in close proximity to human settlements, which has led to an increase in human-leopard conflicts. This has resulted in an increase in leopard sightings and interactions with humans, which has led to an increase in awareness and conservation efforts for the species.

BEST TIME TO VISIT JHALANA LEOPARD SAFARI

Best time to visit jhalana leopard reserve.

Most forest reserve parks are closed during the monsoon time, but here is the reserve forest to compensate for it. The Jhalana Leopard Reserve or Jhalana Leopard Safari is open for visitors throughout the year from 1st January to 31st December as per the entry timings, which vary from season to season. Although one can enjoy the leopard safari any time of the year, November to April is considered the best time to visit Jhalana Leopard Safari Park as the weather is soothing and favorable at this point in time.

jhalana leopard safari blog

Winter Season – October to March

The Winter season, from October to March, is the peak and the most visited season as winter comes with beauty and greenery after the monsoon season, making the surroundings appealing to wildlife lovers.

Bird loves will also get the chance to see the beautiful birds, as many migratory birds visit Jhalana in the winter.

If you are traveling in winter, please don’t forget to pre-book a safari and carry warm clothes.

Summer Season – April to June

The summer season, from April to June, is the least preferred season by visitors due to the severe heat. The temperature in this period is generally high in Jhalana as it goes up to 45-degree celsius.

Although it would be difficult for most people to roam inside the forest in such unbearable heat, if you can tolerate the heat, here are the two reasons you should visit in summer.

First, it is less crowded, and second, there would be a high probability of seeing leopards in and around the water bodies. But you must apply sunscreen and wear full sleeves clothes to protect yourself from the hot blazing sun.

Monsoon Season – July to September

The monsoon season can never make a wildlife enthusiast happy, as most of the reserve forests are closed to visitors, but here is something to compensate.

Jhalana Leopard Safari park remains open for visitors even during the monsoon season; sighting and capturing leopards in such lush green dense foliage is a lifetime experience.

But it would help if you carried a raincoat while traveling for the Jhalana safari.
