Cruising with Jane McDonald: All the destinations and cruise ships from the show

Author: Sophie Chichester

Published on: 29 June 2021

Cruising With Jane McDonald has long been a firm favourite among many Britons thanks to Jane's cheeky personality and the stunning destinations she visits.

Jane McDonald has cruised on a whole host of cruise ships to multiple destinations throughout the seven series-strong show.

From Alaska and Norway to Australia and Portugal, the singer's travels have taken her far and wide.

Cruise agent ROL Cruise offers cruises to all the same destinations onboard the very same ships Jane travelled on.

This is everything you need to know about the destinations and ships from Cruising With Jane McDonald.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 1

Destination: alaska.

Alaska is famed for its dramatic landscape punctuated with magnificent snow-capped mountains and towering Sitka Spruce trees. The slow-moving, winding waters of the Alaskan archipelagos guide cruise passengers between the mountains unveiling remote towns and villages along the way, not to mention awe-inspiring wildlife.

Lucky travellers might spot bears on Kodiak Island or even spot a whale diving through the waters in the south-easterly region. Grey wolves prowl the land while moose loiter by the roadside, and you'll likely hear the shrill cry of an eagle.

As for local cuisine, don't miss Alaskan salmon, halibut, reindeer dogs and 'Eskimo ice cream.'

When Jane visited Alaska she took a helicopter trip up to an ice field for a dog-sledding adventure and admired the splendour of the Margery glacier, a 21-mile stretch of ice in the Glacier Bay National Park.

Cruise ship: Nieuw Amsterdam, Holland America Line

Jane sailed on Nieuw Amsterdam to Alaska. The ship celebrates the glamour and history of New York City (paying homage to the city’s previous name).

The vessel boasts a $3million art collection featuring work by Andy Warhol, Richard Estes and Roy Lichtenstein. Expect elegant dining rooms, warm service and top-quality dining with tradition perfectly balanced with modern facilities for a pleasing and comfortable voyage.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 2

Destination: caribbean.

The Caribbean offers the perfect cocktail of holiday ingredients: white sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters, glorious sunshine and blue skies... not to mention actual delicious rum cocktails!

Aruba, Anguilla, St Bart’s and Turks & Caicos offer pure white sand beaches while eastern islands Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and St. Lucia are home to darker, volcanic sunning spots.

There's no shortage of activities to do - boating and sailing, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are all on offer.

Foodies should tuck into pepperpot, Antigua’s national dish of meat and vegetables such as okra, spinach, eggplant, squash and potatoes or Cayman Islands Tortuga rum cake, a heavy, moist cake available in several delicious flavours.

In the show, Jane McDonald visits Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba as well as Montego Bay in Jamaica.

She said of Cuba: “Cuba was like being in the film La La Land. Everywhere we went people were singing and there were bands on every street corner. I was serenaded with guitars. Cubans are the happiest people I’ve ever met, and it was really enlightening to be with folk who love life. We blagged our way into a house party and it was like the set of Fame.”

Cruise ship: Celestyal Crystal, Celestyal Cruises

Celestyal Crystal is home to comfortable staterooms and suites, elegant restaurants, bars and lounges, spa and fitness rooms.

Perks include fresh towels and toiletries delivered twice a day and personal stewards on hand to deliver room service 24/7.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 3

Destination: rhine.

The Rhine River snakes from the Swiss Alps through central and Western Europe until it reaches the North Sea.

Cruising along the romantic river affords passengers views of beautiful castles, verdant vineyards and fairy-tale villages.

Notable stops include Amsterdam (Red Light District and tulips), Cologne (Romanesque churches and a Chocolate Museum), Koblenz (pretty squares and a Rhine castle), Rudesheim (Riesling wine and historic streets), Miltenberg (a brewery and a castle), Wurzburg (a UNESCO-protected palace and pre-war grandeur), Mannheim (an 18th-century palace and a beautiful park) and Basel (a Gothic cathedral and stunning architecture).

Cruise ship: S.S. Antoinette, Uniworld River Cruises

The “S.S.” here appropriately means “Super Ship.” The vessel features fine Brazilian marble on the walls and floors, a 19th-century Venetian glass mirror, a stylish Bar du Leopard with a full-service bar and an onboard cinema.

What's more, the two-story foyer boasts a 10-foot blue Strauss Baccarat chandelier with huge sapphires—a stunning piece that once hung in New York's famous Tavern on the Green—and a collection of original artworks is displayed throughout the ship.

Staterooms and suites on La Princesse Deck have open-air balconies that, at the touch of a button, will raise the glass to create a completely enclosed conservatory.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 4

Destination: south america.

Jane visited a wealth of countries in this beautiful and diverse continent in the show. She started in Chile before sailing down to Patagonia and on to the Falkland Islands in part one. In part two she went to Argentina and Uruguay.

Valparaíso, on Chile’s Pacific coast, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A riot of colour and fun, it's famous for its unique bohemian culture, brightly coloured houses and stunning seashores. Easter Island is Chile’s other hidden treasure, boasting legendary stone moai and other indigenous artefacts.

The Falkland Islands are some 4,700 square miles but with a tiny permanent population of just under 3,000 people, oh, and a great many penguins.

Meanwhile, Argentina is home to the tango, not to mention delicious food and drinks. Buenos Aires is a must-visit with its beautiful buildings and frenetic energy while Iguazu Falls sits on the border of Argentina and Brazil and is surrounded by glorious flora and fauna.

As for Uruguay, capital Montevideo has plenty to offer, including a remarkable mix of modern and colonial architecture.

Cruise line: Silver Muse, Silversea

Silver Muse offers its 596 guests the newest technology, state-of-the-art facilities, spacious outdoor areas and all-suite accommodation – not to forget exquisite dining delicacies.

The Spa by Silversea has floor-to-ceiling windows which offer sweeping views of the ocean plus nine treatment rooms, an acupuncture suite, relaxation areas, saunas, steam room and an outdoor whirlpool.

Guests can check out the Arts Café where paintings and sculptures showcase a broad range of talents while in the evening the Venetian Lounge is a must stop.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 5

Destination: australia.

Australia has everything to sate holidaymakers, from beautiful beaches and breathtaking wildlife to vibrant cities and lush green rainforests.

Sydney is known for its famous Sydney Opera House, iconic harbour and glorious beaches. Perth also features pristine beaches as well as a myriad of attractions including Perth Zoo.

Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city and is considered to be the country’s cultural capital thanks to its countless art galleries, museums and live music scene. The culinary scene is also buzzing here.

Of course, heading out into nature is hugely rewarding, too. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s most extensive ecosystem. It's home to over 1,500 species of fish, around 240 species of birds and a diverse array of crustaceans, anemones and marine worms.

Meanwhile, the Blue Mountains bristle with tall forests, sandstone cliffs, canyons and waterfalls. There are over 87 miles of walking tracks here.

Cruise line: Sun Princess, Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises exclusively featured in all three episodes of series five.

Sun Princess was built in 1995 and was one of the largest cruise ships in the world at the time. However, the ship is no longer among Princess' fleet and was sold to Peace Boat in 2020. It's now called Pacific World.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 6

Destination: portugal.

Portugal offers tourists cobbled streets, hilltop castles, rugged coastlines and high-reaching cliffs.

The country is very popular as a river cruising destination and in Cruising with Jane McDonald, the singer sails the Douro and ends her trip in Lisbon.

Charming Lisbon is lined with colourful buildings, cobbled streets are underfoot and an eye-catching tram serves as enchanting city transport.

Top attractions include Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a century-old monastery; Castelo de São Jorge, from the turrets of which you can survey Lisbon; Panteao Nacional; and Praca do Comercio.

The city dates right back to 1200BC and has been home to the Neolithic Pre-Celtic tribes, the Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors.

Cruise ship: Emerald Radiance, Emerald Waterways

Emerald Radiance was custom-built for cruising Portugal's waterways. She boasts a relaxing Sun Deck, outdoor dining terrace and open-air Serenity Pool.

She's also the most intimate ship in the fleet operated by Emerald Waterways, with a capacity of 112 passengers and a crew-to-guest ratio of just 1:3.

All meals are included in the price of your trip, with complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks available during mealtimes.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 7

Destination: norway.

Gorgeous Norway is home to mountains, glaciers and picturesque fjords - there are more than 1,000 of them!

Sognefjord is the longest of the Norwegian fjords - it's more than 200 kilometres and measures 1,308 metres at its deepest point - while Geirangerfjord (a UNESCO world heritage site) is often said to be the most breathtaking of the fjords.

Norwegian capital, Oslo, is known for its green spaces and many museums, while Tromsø is famed as a viewing point for the northern lights. You can also go husky-sledding in the snow and admire the stunning view from Mount Storsteinen.

Jane sails from Bergen to Kirkenes in Cruising with Jane McDonald. Bergen was founded more than 900 years ago and has a rich history. Famous composer Edvard Grieg was born here.

Cruise line: MS Polarlys, Hurtigruten

MS Polarlys (which means ‘polar light’ in Norwegian) features a modern, Arctic-inspired design. It offers guests a choice of warm and cosy cabins while delicious Norwegian cuisine is served onboard.

The Explorer Lounge is one of the most popular public areas on the ships thanks to its panoramic views and comfortable 360-degree swivel chairs.

The expedition team are always on hand and regularly hold interesting lectures, presentations and activities relevant to the waters you travel.

Cruising with Jane Mcdonald

Sailing with the masses on the MSC Divina is a novelty for Jane, but the ship's Caribbean calling points bring back fond memories. She seeks solace in the oldest Baptist Church on the Bahamas, and swims with sharks off the island of St Martin.

Joined by just six other passengers on what is easily her smallest ever cruise, Jane enjoys unseasonably good weather as she visits the puffin-packed Treshnish Islands, and Fingal's Cave on Staffa, which inspired Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture.

On her first ever river cruise, Jane heads to Budapest's Szechenyi Baths, before a visit to the moving WWII memorial, Shoes on the Danube Bank. Then, after a waltz and a wurst, Jane makes her way to her final stop of Passau, Southern Bavaria.

Starting in Vancouver, Jane cruises around Alaska, enjoying a dog sledding adventure on an ice field, visiting the Glacier Bay National Park, meeting the cast of the onboard nightly musicals and taking a cooking lesson from the ship's executive chef en route.

Jane takes her first Scandi-cruise aboard the Viking Sky, visiting Tallinn, St Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm, and doing everything from meeting cats to becoming the fifth member of ABBA.

A cruise like no other, to a place like no other. Beginning and ending in Havana Jane's cruise round Cuba opened her eyes to a completely unique country.

Her adventure starts in Tenerife where she snoops around and visits the island's top sights plus she'll be going off the beaten track. Later in the series she’ll journey to Gran Canaria, where she walks across the dunes, rides a jet ski and parties at a cabaret club. Then it’s off to Fuertaventura to help clean the beach and try out yoga with a difference, before heading to Lanzarote to explore its caves and make pottery.

* Read our episode guide below for more about each destination...

Jane takes a dip in the Atlantic.

The Canary Islands with Jane McDonald episode guide

Here's our guide to The Canary Islands with Jane McDonald which we'll be updating as the series progresses...

Episode 1: Tenerife Jane takes a cable car ride up Mount Teide before trying out some local dishes at a traditional Canarian restaurant. She also visits a banana plantation, where she samples banana wine and banana jam. Jane visits the beautiful old town of La Oratava then learns how to make baskets from palm leaves on the neighbouring island of La Gomera.

Episode 2: Gran Canaria Jane travels 70 miles southeast of her starting point in Tenerife to check out the beaches, nightlife and picturesque towns of Gran Canaria. "That’s the great thing about the Canaries, they’re all so different," she says. "In Gran Canaria, you’ll find different climates and temperatures which is why they call it the mini continent, rugged and off-road up north and a beach lover’s paradise down south." Jane explores the island’s famous 1000-acre sand dunes, where she meets one of the area’s renowned sand sculptors, then ventures up north to see the beautiful town of Firgas, which boasts its own natural spring water, salt-water pools, streets covered in mosaics and a waterfall in the centre of town. She also enjoys tapas made entirely from locally-grown watercress, accompanied by watercress bread, before heading back down to the south of the island where she tries her hand at jet-skiing and enjoys a fun night out at drag club Ricky’s! "I’ve had a fabulous time in Gran Canaria," she says. "It’s a very welcoming island, full of lively locals and sunny sand dunes and fun things to do. I’ve loved every minute.’"

Jane hits Gran Canaria for episode 2.

Episode 3: Fuertaventura As she works her way around the Canary Islands, Jane McDonald heads to Fuerteventura, known for its long stretches of pristine sand and unique herb-flavoured goat’s cheese. As Jane relaxes with some poolside yoga, there’s a surprise when she realises she’s booked a naked session and must decide whether she dares to bare! "I can see why people would want to do it because it’s very freeing and if I was going to wear my birthday suit it would certainly be here in the warm Canarian sunshine," she says. "But I’m keeping my cossie on."  Instead of naked yoga Jane opts for a special mindfulness session with horses. She must free her mind and allow the horse to come to her whenever it chooses. And when it does, it leaves her feeling unexpectedly emotional. "I can’t explain how your soul connects with an animal like that," says Jane. "It’s just you, the animal and total peace." Jane also explores the island’s beaches and takes a day trip to Los Lobos, a stunning island off the northern tip of Fuerteventura that only allows access to 400 people a day. "All the islands are different but I love Fuerteventura,’ says Jane. ‘I could live here and I know I’ll be back one day."

Jane's in Fuertaventura for episode 3.

Episode 4: Lanzarote On the last leg of her trip around the Canary Islands, Jane McDonald heads to Lanzarote, somewhere that has long been on her bucket-list. And to get a feel of the island’s history she tries out some of its celebrated traditions, such as playing an instrument called a timple, making pottery and having a go at pole fighting in the beautiful town of Teguise. "It’s like a dance," says Jane, as she tackles her opponent with a long stick. "It’s a good way to engage the body and the mind. But it’s hard work." Jane checks out Lanzarote’s beauty spots, including the arts centre built by artist Cesar Manrique inside a volcanic tunnel, and tastes some unique wine produced in volcanic fields. She also samples some delicious barbecued chicken, cooked using the heat from the earth’s core.  "This is Mother Nature at its finest," she says, as jets of water at 400 degree-temperatures fire out of the ground. "Planet Earth is one big kettle, constantly on the boil." But then it’s onto one of the island’s more recent attractions, searching for a teaspoon buried into Playa Blanca’s concrete streets. "Local legend says the mysterious spoon has been trapped in Playa Blanca’s pavement for over 40 years," says Jane. "But I am Indiana Jane, and I will find it. I’m so glad I managed to finally experience Lanzarote’s unique delights. From its lava-laid landscapes to its people and culture and the warmest of welcomes. It’s truly been a little island of happiness."

We are excited to announce that our beautiful small ship, M/V Victory II, will feature in the new series of ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’, with a cruise on the Great Lakes.  The hugely successful Channel 5 show will air the episode on 29th November at 9pm, the first episode in series six.

The programme features the ten-day ‘Great Lakes and French Canada’ cruise; boarding in Detroit, Michigan, USA and cruising Lake Erie and Lake Ontario before cruising up the scenic St. Lawrence River to disembark in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Ports of call also included Cleveland, Ohio; Toronto, Ontario; historical Quebec City and Port Weller for Niagara Falls.

The visit to the Falls was an absolute highlight, with Jane taking a boat tour under the famous Horseshoe Falls, followed by a 670 metres zip wire excursion into the gorge towards the base of the Falls.

Jane McDonald cruised on the 202 passengers, elegant, ‘boutique’ small ship Victory II, one of two identical Victory Cruise Lines’ vessels, the other being the Victory I, which also cruises the Great Lakes.  A range of itineraries cover all five Great Lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario and the Canadian Maritimes.

“It was a huge pleasure to host Jane McDonald and Channel 5’s ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’ film crew onboard Victory Cruise Lines’ Victory II small ship last July.  Demand for US cruising, be it river, lake or ocean, is increasing from the UK and European cruise markets, especially from cruisers who have experienced European cruises and are looking for new destinations and adventures! “

Similar to the cruise featured in the programme is a 10-days ‘Great Lakes Masterpiece’ voyage Toronto / Niagara Falls to Chicago (or reverse) available for 2020 dates from £4595 pp, or a 15-day ‘Great Lakes Grand Discoveries’ Chicago to Montreal (or reverse) is available for 2020 dates from £6595 pp

Tough-guy actor and director Clint Eastwood just made a rare appearance.

Eastwood, who turns 94 next month (on May 31), was in good spirits when he was spotted attending an event in his hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, on March 24, per photos obtained by The Post.

Eastwood was at the local Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel to attend a speaking engagement hosted by renowned conservationist Jane Goodall.

Clint Eastwood, 93, made a rare public appearance at an event sponsored by Jane Goodall. He's working on his next movie, "Juror No. 2."

The bright-eyed icon sat front-and-center at the event, “Reasons for Hope,” and also joined Goodall backstage at the reception along with other VIPs about an hour before the event, where they chatted amiably.

He was accompanied by an assistant.

The event was presented by the Wildlife Conservation Network and was part of Goodall’s “90th Birthday Tour,” according to a photo recently  shared on LinkedIn .

Goodall turned 90 on April 3.

The 93-year-old Eastwood, sporting a bushy white beard, was wearing a blue checkered flannel shirt, gray slacks and sneakers and was absorbed in the talk.

Clint Eastwood as Inspector Harry Callahan in "Dirty Harry" (1971). His career has spanned nearly 70 years in the movies and on television.

Goodall is renowned for her work with primates, so it’s not surprising that Eastwood turned out to hear her speak. He starred opposite Clyde, an orangutan, in the 1978 movie comedy “Every Which Way but Loose.”

He also exposed his children to the wonders of nature by raising them on his ranch in Carmel, surrounded by all sorts of animals.

Eastwood, who served two years as the mayor of Carmel in the mid-1980s, is still going strong in the film business — he’s currently directing and producing the upcoming movie “Juror No. 2,” starring Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette.

Jane Goodall and Clint Eastwood chatted amiably at a VIP meeting about an hour before Goodall's talk at the Wildlife Conservation Network in Carmel, Calif.

“Juror No. 2” is a courtroom drama where a juror and family man, Justin Kemp (Hoult), starts to realize that he was the one who killed the victim in a case of reckless driving, according to Collider .

Now, he’s put in the position of trying to save the defendant on trial without incriminating himself.

It began shooting last June.

Eastwood’s career spans nearly 70 years in show business.

He’s won four Oscars — two apiece for “Unforgiven” (1993) and “Million Dollar Baby” (2005), both for Best Picture and Best Director — and has been nominated seven more times, including a nod for “American Sniper” (2015) starring Bradley Cooper.
