Here you'll have the chance to wander the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, see Tokyo's oldest temple - Senso-ji, take a sushi-making lesson from a professional chef, and view the magnificent cityscape in a panoramic view from Tokyo Skytree. Continue from there to Hakone, and enjoy views of breathtaking and iconic Mt. Fuji. While there, take a trip to Owakudani Valley to see the blistering hot springs near the active volcano. The tour continues, first to behold Matsumoto Castle, then on to Takayama, where visitors can browse the morning market and walk the heritage streets of Old Town Takayama. You’ll go from there to the UNESCO Heritage Town of Shirakawa-go, where visitors find themselves immersed in a unique traditional town of Japan's Edo period: an idyllic scene of wooden farmhouses with long thatched roofs. After, we depart for Ise Shima, taking time while on the way to enjoy an immersive pottery experience at Seto. Upon arrival at Ise Shima, travelers discover the Ise Grand Shrine – the chief shrine of the Shinto religion. From there, the tour winds its way down to Kyoto and Nara, and hundreds of preserved temples and shrines, including the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), covered in gold leaf, and crowned with a phoenix; Fushimi Inari, with thousands of red torii gates; and Todai-ji, the oldest wooden structure in Japan, with an adjacent park home to hundreds of wild deer. While in Kyoto, you'll experience traditional Japanese culture in-depth, studying calligraphy and ikebana (flower-arranging) in a traditional townhouse, and experiencing Zen meditation and green tea ceremony at Kodaiji Temple. Hotel Mandarin Oriental Tokyo or similar class

Tokyo (tsukiji outer fish market tour / sushi making & lunch / meiji shrine / harajuku - takeshita district & omotesando).

After breakfast, enjoy a tour of Tsukiji Outer Market, an outdoor open market area which is all that remains of the old Tsukiji Wholesale Fish Market. This shopping street is filled with shops and restaurants where you can sample fresh seafood, local produce, and street food, as well as shop for other food-related goods. Next, learn how to create your own sushi with a professional sushi chef. Note: For the Sushi Making Experience, if you are a vegetarian, on a gluten-free diet, have a seafood allergy, or don't eat raw fish, please contact us for other ingredient options. From there, we will enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the Meiji Shrine, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. This pristine nature spot is densely forested with over 350 types of trees, and is a place of calm amid turbulent Tokyo. Then, we take a tour of Harajuku, browsing around the Takeshita District and Omotesando. The Takeshita District is an active and exciting youth fashion shopping area full of stylish boutiques that push the latest trends and avant-garde apparel. Omotesando, on the other hand, is Tokyo’s Champs Elysees – a broad fashion boulevard lined with zelkova trees, known as the go-to street to find contemporary, designer wear and accessories from brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, and Prada, all in chic, modern store buildings.

Breakfast / Lunch

Tokyo (asakusa sensoji temple & nakamise street / tokyo skytree / imperial palace east garden).

In the morning, we travel to Asakusa Sensoji Temple, in Tokyo’s Asakusa district. Enter by way of the Kaminarimon “Thunder Gate,” in which hangs an enormous red paper lantern. Don’t forget to look up to see the dragon sculpture under the lantern! Walk through the Nakamise District – a street lined with shops selling traditional goods of all kinds, before approaching Sensoji Temple. Take some time to explore Tokyo’s oldest temple and shrine complex. Next, ascend to the observation deck of Tokyo SkyTree – the tallest tower in Japan (and one of the tallest in the world), providing incredible panoramic 360-degree views of the Tokyo cityscape. Even Mount Fuji is visible on clear days! Then, we will go to the Imperial Palace and see the beautiful East Garden. The grounds contain the ruins of Old Edo Castle, as well as a stately Japanese landscape garden. Tonight, enjoy a delicious Yakitori dinner.

Breakfast / Dinner

Hakone (lake ashi cruise / hakone ropeway / owakudani valley / open air museum).

In the morning, travel to the land at the base of Mt. Fuji where we will board a Lake Ashi Cruise to enjoy and appreciate Hakone’s natural scenery. We will take a 20- minute ropeway ride from Togendai to Owakudani. Along the ropeway, weather permitting, there will be great views of Mt. Fuji in the distance. While in Owakudani, visitors will have the chance to see hot springs and sulfurous fumes along the trails of an active volcanic zone. Finally, we will visit the Hakone Open Air Museum which creates a harmonic balance of nature and art by exhibiting various sculptures in combination with views of the surrounding valley and mountains.

Fujisan Onsen Bessho Sasa or similar class

Mt fuji (5th station / kubota itchiku art museum).

Today, if the weather is in our favor, we will travel to Mt. Fuji’s 5th station, the most popular and convenient spot to enjoy views of the iconic mountain. Afterwards we will tour the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum and view the Tsujigahana silk dyed artworks, regarded as one of the lost arts of Japan. In the afternoon, visit Lake Kawaguchi with your guide or, if you prefer, enjoy some leisurely free time enjoying the countryside surrounding Mount Fuji.

Matsumoto (Matsumoto Castle / Nakamachi District)

This morning, travel to Matsumoto where you can visit Matsumoto Castle (Black Crow Castle), one of the twelve remaining original castles of Japan. Then savor a delightful soba lunch before going to enjoy the traditional ambience in the Nakamachi District. This well-preserved quarter of Matsumoto includes “Frog Street” – a row of small shops and cafes housed in old-fashioned buildings, the entrance of which is guarded by a frog statue.

Hanaougi Bettei Iiyama or similar class

Takayama (morning market / old town), shirakawago (shiroyama viewpoint / gassho-zukuri minkaen).

We can start our day with the Takayama Morning Market, where visitors can taste local farm products and snacks. Next, take a stroll through the beautifully preserved Takayama Old Town, with buildings dating from Japan's Edo Period. After, travel to the UNESCO World Heritage site in the rural area of Shirakawa-go. Ogimachi Village is the main attraction, where we will walk past thatched roof farm houses and cultivated fields to see unspoiled Edo period wooden buildings. Once there, we will go to the Shiroyama Viewpoint for nice views of the village, as well as the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen, which is an open-air museum of farmhouses and structures relocated to this area.

Seto (Setogura Museum / Visit a Pottery Studio for Pottery Experience)

In the morning, depart Takayama for Ise Shima, stopping on the way in Seto for a visit to the Setogura Museum. This extensive gallery showcases the fine and delicate ceramics of the Seto region - known as "Seto-ware". After, enjoy a more personal look at Seto-ware with a visit to a local studio and an immersive Pottery Experience. Then transfer to your hotel in Ise Shima.

Aman Resort Amanemu or similar class

Ise shima (ise jingu shrine / oharaimachi / mikimoto pearl island).

We start our day at Ise Shima with a visit to Ise Jingu Grand Shrine, one of the most important shrines in the Shinto religion. Some buildings in the shrine are rebuilt every twenty years out of local hinoki cypress wood, to symbolize their belief in the cycle of death and renewal in nature. The main building also purportedly houses the Sacred Mirror - one of the Imperial family's most sacred treasures. Attatched to Ise Jingu's Inner Shrine is Oharaimachi a town filled with old buildings from the Meiji and Edo eras. Visit Mikimoto Pearl Island - a museum about pearl cultivation and Kokichi Mikimoto, who brought modern pearl cultivation techniques to Japan.

Koka (Miho Museum), Kyoto (Visit to a Traditional Wooden Townhouse to learn about Calligraphy and the art of Ikebana)

Today, visit the Miho Museum, which exhibits stunning architecture that accentuates the surrounding natural scenery while exhibiting a variety of items from ancient civilizations. It was designed by the renowned architect, I. M. Pei, and is named after Koyama Mihoko, one of the richest women in Japan and the founder of the museum. From there, travel to Kyoto to visit a Traditional Wooden Townhouse and take a fun and engaging lesson in Origami, Calligraphy, and Ikebana. Origami is the traditional art of paper-folding that has become almost as famous internationally as it is in Japan, and masters of this art can create an impressive array of designs. Calligraphy is a time-honored art that involves using a brush and black ink to draw meaningful Japanese kanji (characters) on thin, white washi paper. The rules and traditions that govern the angle, pressure, and movement of the brush, as well as the mindful determination of the artist, make Calligraphy an art as fascinating to watch as it is to perform. Finally, there is the art of Ikebana, or Flower-arranging, which is considered one of the three classical Japanese arts of refinement. Ikebana composes flowers and other plants in ways that are meant to convey beauty, meaning, and emotion, often connected to the changing seasons. But it’s not an art just for the ladies; flower-arranging is a time-honored discipline that has been practiced by such historical figures as shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, samurai warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and tea master Sen-no-Rikyu.

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto or similar class

Nara (todaiji temple / nara deer park).

After breakfast, we will travel to Nara and visit one of Japan’s most famous temples and a landmark of Nara, Todaiji Temple. Outside the temple, interact with the wild deer of Nara Deer Park. There are special deer crackers available at every corner of the area. For lunch, enjoy a mouthwatering course featuring Japanese Wagyu Beef. After lunch, you can enjoy a guided garden tour to Murin- an, a rare example of a Japanese garden which also exhibits western architecture, followed by a visit to Nanzenji Temple, a former retirement villa of Emperor Kameyama converted into a beautiful Zen temple. Or, if you prefer, take some leisure time in the afternoon to explore Kyoto on your own.

Kyoto (Golden Pavilion / Arashiyama - Tenryuji Temple & Garden - Bamboo Grove - Togetsukyo Bridge / GEAR Theatre)

In the morning, we view one of Kyoto’s most coveted sights – the elegant Golden Pavilion. The temple’s shimmering golden walls can be seen reflected in the Mirror Pond below, but don’t miss the dainty phoenix ornament sitting on the roof! We then head to Arashiyama to visit Tenryuji Temple, a fascinating Zen Buddhist Temple with a gorgeous traditional Japanese landscape garden that has survived in its original state for centuries. Then proceed on a path through the nearby Bamboo Grove, where towering green stalks create an almost otherworldly feeling of awe and mystery as you walk the pathway through the center. Continue from there to Togetsukyo Bridge, which was originally built spanning the Katsura River hundreds of years ago. It’s now one of the best places to view the natural splendor of Arashiyama. Tonight, prepare for a spectacle unlike anything you've ever seen. At the GEAR Theater live show, 5 human performers play "robots" who come to life and learn through creative playfulness and skill how they might approach humanity. GEAR uses only non-verbal motion – dance, performance art, and stage magic – to delight audiences of any age and language.

Kyoto (Fushimi Inari Shrine / Kiyomizu Temple / Kimono Wearing Experience / Kodaiji Temple - Zen Meditation & Green Tea Ceremony / Gion Geisha District - Kyoto Cuisine with Maiko Dinner)

First, we visit Fushimi Inari Shrine – Japan’s chief shrine to Inari, the Shinto deity of economic prosperity, rice, and foxes. This shrine is famed for its hundreds of bright vermillion “torii” gates that form a long pathway around the shrine’s forest landscape; a scene that was made world-famous by the film “Memoirs of a Geisha”. Try to spot as many statues of the fox – Inari’s sacred messengers – as you can while you explore the shrine grounds. We continue from there to Kiyomizu Temple, also known as the Temple of Pure Water, a celebrated landmark famed for its iconic three-story pagoda and large wooden stage which offers dramatic views of the city, bordered by gorgeous cherry and maple trees. The trio of streams pouring from the base of the main hall are each believed to offer a different blessing – a long life, fortune in love, and success with studies. While in the area, stop in a Kimono rental shop to experience trying on a stylish kimono, an item for which the city of Kyoto is famous, to immerse yourself more completely in the local traditional atmosphere. Then, we will travel to Kodaiji Temple, which is a lavish temple built in the memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Here, we can experience the time-honored Green Tea Ceremony, a ritual of hospitality once afforded only to nobility. We can also learn Zen meditation, or “zazen”: a discipline practiced by Zen Buddhist monks to gain clarity of mind and insight into the nature of existence. We will end our day in the Gion Geisha District, where its streets are lined with ochaya (teahouses) – exclusive establishments where guests are entertained by Geisha and Maiko. Here, we will enjoy traditional Kyoto Cuisine in the company of a beautiful Maiko – a geisha-in- training.
