Monastery of the Temptation in Jericho

Visit Jericho, Israel

The West Bank city of Jericho was first settled 11,000 years ago. Drawn by the presence of numerous natural springs in the area, successive generations of small-scale farmers contributed to the modern-day claim that Jericho is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Referred to as the ‘city of the palms’ in the Bible, Jericho is laden with history, its very walls witness to successive waves of invasion and domination, its ruins a testament to a complex backstory. Along with archaeological and biblical sites, Jericho offers sweeping views and a timeless feel.

Located northeast of Jerusalem , Jericho is quieter and less visited. It can be visited on a day trip from Jerusalem and provides a contrast to the latter’s bustling streets. The route between the two is the setting for the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The oldest remains in the city date back to the Stone Age and are located at Tell es-Sultan (Sultan’s Hill). The mounds here were built up over time and excavations have revealed layer after layer of evidence of human habitation, the oldest and deepest remains dating back some 10,000 years. The site has only been partially excavated but major finds include the remains of a round tower thought to date from 8,000 BC.

According to the Bible, the Mount of Temptation is the spot where Jesus resisted Satan after his 40-day fast in the desert. Cut into its cliff face is the Monastery of the Qurantul, a popular Christian pilgrimage site occupying a dramatic position overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. This Greek Orthodox monastery is accessed by cable car followed by a ten-minute uphill walk, but its panoramic views make it worth the effort. Although most of the complex dates from the Ottoman era, the earliest sections of the monastery date from the 6th century, while the Crusaders built two churches here in the 11th century.

Sitting just north of Tell es-Sultan, Hisham’s Palace is the 8th-century residence of Caliph Hisham Ibn Abd al-Malik. Known for its elaborate decoration, baths, halls and intricate mosaics, it was destroyed by an earthquake soon after it was built, however the site is still interesting to explore.

Best time to visit Jericho

Jericho can be visited year round but the best time to come is in April or May or between September and November as you’ll avoid the hot and humid summer months and peak visitor numbers. On a summer visit, it’s best to arrive early or late to avoid the midday heat and large tour groups.

Biblical Israel - Faith-Based Travel - Protestant Itinerary

Wow! Everything on this trip was amazing. I chose this tour because it combined the most important biblical locations from both the old and new testament, as well as the most important archaeological sites. Everything was perfect. We went hard day by day, but we saw everything we wanted to see. I would not have toured Israel in any other way. Our guide Shai was absolutely superb. He was incredibly knowledgable and I learned so much about biblical history, archaeology, and the Jewish culture. I am going to tell all my family to take this Cosmos Protestant tour because of its quality and substance. Outstanding!

I dont think much world knows about were great to visit n see. Moreover, middle in the areas of wars and conflicts, always the most peaceful and safe country to visit without any hesitation. From first day's airport pick up to last day's airport drop off, every aspect of the trip was perfectly managed. The guide (Maalik) provided to our group was simply amazing ... his trip planning, execution , time management , sight/history briefing etc were fantastic. Food was amazing ????? I highly recommend Trip500 for anyone looking to explore Jordan. Their expertise and attention to details for creating memorable journeys reflects through every aspect of their service.

Venice’s Tourist Fee Is Now in Effect — What to Know

The fee is in place for day-visitors over 14 years old from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

jericho day trip

Stacey Wreathall/Travel + Leisure

Day visitors to Venice on Thursday had to pay to get in as the famous city started implementing the much-talked about day trip fee.

Travelers hoping to explore the Italian city had to pony up €5 ($5.36) per person at the train station. The fee, which was first floated as an idea in 2019 but postponed several times , will initially be in effect for 29 days and cover most weekends through mid-July.

“We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents,’’ Simone Venturini, the city’s top tourism official, told The Associated Press . “We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days.”

The dates the fee is in effect were displayed on large signs at Venice’s main train station on Thursday, the wire service reported, with separate entrances available for tourists, and residents, students, and workers.

The fee, which is in effect for travelers over 14 years old from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., can be paid online . Day visitors who pay in advance receive a QR code, which they must then show to officials at Venice's main access points.

On Thursday, the AP noted there were stewards available to help travelers unaware of the new rules to download the QR code and pay.

Tourists who are staying overnight will not have to pay the new day fee, but must apply online for an exemption . Overnight guests who book a hotel stay are already subject to a different tax.

This fee is the city’s latest effort to address overtourism. In January, Venice built on that goal by announcing plans to limit the number of travelers allowed on tour groups to no more than 25 people. That rule will apply to Venice’s historic center as well as the popular islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello.

These efforts come months after UNESCO spared Venice from its list of world heritage sites in danger once again despite recommendations to add it.

Rachel Lodice, of Jericho, pleads not guilty in fatal Massapequa crash, fleeing in stolen public safety car

jericho day trip

A Jericho woman charged for allegedly causing a fatal crash in Massapequa before stealing a public safety vehicle and fleeing the scene told investigators she had been drinking beforehand, according to court records and the police.

Nassau District Court Judge Veronica Irwin set cash bail Wednesday at $250,000 for Rachel Lodice, 21.

Lodice had been driving south on Hicksville Road at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in a gray 2023 Kia Rio with Georgia plates when she struck a 2022 Nissan Altima as it headed east on Sunrise Highway, Nassau County police said in a news release.

The Nissan's driver, Cynthia Mitchell, 64, of Freeport, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where medical staff pronounced her dead, police said. Mitchell's passenger, a 46-year-old female, was treated at the medical center for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Lodice was in police custody Wednesday for her arraignment, where she faced charges of second-degree vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an incident, driving while intoxicated and third-degree grand larceny, police said. Lodice entered a not-guilty plea through her Legal Aid attorney, and Irwin also set a $500,000 bond, court records show. Lodice's license also was suspended.

After the crash, according to court records, Town of Oyster Bay Public Safety Sgt. John Graham arrived to assist in rescue efforts. Lodice, who later told police she had been drinking before the crash, ran up to Graham's Chevy Equinox patrol vehicle as he sat inside and told him that her side hurt and she was thirsty, the court records show. He handed Lodice a bottle of red Gatorade and “told her to stay here,” records show. Graham then got out of his vehicle to render help to the women in the Nissan.

“There goes your car,” someone yelled out, according to his statement contained in the court records.

“I looked and saw my vehicle traveling east on Sunrise Highway,” Graham said.

He then radioed to dispatch that his vehicle had been stolen. The Department of Public Safety immediately began tracking the vehicle and sending its location to police, a spokesperson said Wednesday.

About 20 minutes later, according to court documents, officers located the vehicle, and Lodice, wearing Graham's department-issued jacket, near a home on Neptune Avenue in Seaford, close to 2 miles from the crash.

Police said she had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, according to the court records.

Lodice also took a blood-alcohol test, police said. The test results had not been released as of late Wednesday.

While in custody in the back seat of a police vehicle, according to court records, Lodice told officers: “I'm not supposed to drink with my medicine.”

jericho day trip

Want to take a trip around the world? You can in two seconds thanks to Google.

Releasing its annual Earth Day doodle, Google displays the beauty of all six continents around the world. Using satellite technology, the search engine giant created a collage with each Google letter that shows the global sustainability efforts within each continent. The goal for this doodle is to give the audience a tour of positive environmental change in the world.

Here's a look at the Google Doodle for Earth Day:

When is Earth Day 2024?: Get ready to help your planet with our guide to the holiday.

Letters in Earth Day Google Doodle represent climate change progress

Location: Turks and Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos is home to many biodiversity areas. In an effort to preserve the countries conservation, the island has made an effort to protect natural resources such as reefs and restoring endangered species like the rock iguana.

Location: Scorpion Reef National Park, Mexico .

Flying to the Gulf of Mexico, Google makes a stop in Arrecife de Alacranes. This is the largest reef in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the UNESCO biosphere reserve. In this marine protected area, many coral and several endangered bird and turtle species call this area home.

Location: Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

If you like the cold you'll love Google's pitstop in Iceland. Although the country is well-known for its polar bears, the country has more beauty offer. In 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Site was established as a national park to protect the ecosystem in and around Europe’s largest glacier. With the mix of volcanoes and glacial ice, this area is able to produce rare landscapes and flora.

Location: Jaú National Park, Brazil

If you'd like to spend time in a forest, Brazil's got you covered. Parque Nacional do Jaú is one of South America’s largest forest reserves. Located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest this UNESCO World Heritage Site protects many species, including the Amazonian manatee, the giant otter, jaguar and the margay.

Location: Green Great Wall, Nigeria

Bringing you back to the heat, Google take us to Nigeria. The African Union-led initiative's goal is to restore the land affected by desertification across the width of Africa. To combat this, the group has planted trees and other vegetation in sustainable ways. By doing this, communities in the area have seen an increased economic opportunities, food security and climate resilience since 2007.

Location: Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves, Australia

To end the journey around the world, Google's last stop is one of the Pilbara Island Nature Reserves in Australia. These reserves help protect fragile ecosystems, increasingly rare natural habitats and threatened or endangered species. Some of the species include marine turtles, shorebirds and seabirds.
