Destination must-sees.

canada cabot trail logo2

Explore the Cabot Trail:

For 186 spectacularly scenic miles, the Cabot Trail traces an arch around Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, rewarding travelers with lush valley landscapes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and sweeping views of the Atlantic. The park is a hiker’s paradise, and the drive itself offers plenty of opportunity for stops to explore the many trails, lookoffs, artisan shops and local restaurants along the way.

canada bay of fundy logo2

Hopewell Rocks at the Bay of Fundy:

For one of the most iconic sites in all of Canada, head to New Brunswick, where the Hopewell Rocks stand between 40 – 70 feet tall on the shores of the Bay of Fundy — home to the highest and lowest tides in the world. The towering rocks, also known as “sea stacks” are thousands of years in the making, and visitors can enjoy them at high and low tides for dramatically different views.

You're in for a treat! The foods of Canada offer your palate a variety of spices and flavors. The cuisine is influenced by local sources, the traditions of the Indigenous people, and a diverse population. Each region has its own specialty, like the seafood of Atlantic Canada, Vancouver’s fantastic Asian restaurants, the meat produced by Alberta’s sprawling ranches and the wine from British Columbia.

Destination Must-Dos

canada prince edward island logo2

Prince Edward Island:

Take a ferry ride from Nova Scotia or cross the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island. PEI may be the smallest Canadian province, but it’s not short on culture, natural wonders, and delicious seafood. From the seaside capital of Charlottetown to the red sand beaches that inspired the backdrop for Anne of Green Gables, it’s hard not to fall in love with the "Land Cradled on the Waves."

Trains (VIA Rail):

Aboard VIA Rail’s The Canadian, admire the majestic beauty of the Rockies and experience train travel like it used to be in your private cabin. Listen to the peaceful sounds of the train while natural beauty dances to life before your eyes in a scenic wonderland; it’s a veritable journey back in time as you travel from Vancouver to Jasper. Enjoy first-class meals and awe-inspiring vistas during the day. Spend the night in the comfort of your private sleeping room that includes a private washroom. From the moment you board The Canadian, you’ll embrace the nostalgia of a golden era; rail lines trace history while whisking travelers through scenery far removed from the highway.

Canada md3

Niagara Falls:

Behold Niagara Falls, an incredible natural wonder where a staggering four to six million cubic feet of water flows over the falls every minute. Straddling the international border of Canada and New York State are the three waterfalls known as Niagara Falls. They’re called Bridal Veil, Horseshoe and American and have a vertical drop of over 165 feet. Providing hydro-electric power and majestic beauty, the Falls are best viewed from one of the many cruise boats operating on the river below, or from the new zip line that borders the Falls. Also, if given the chance, go see the falls at night. They are lit up and look incredible in the night sky. You may even see fireworks.

Canada md4 Frontenac Castle

Old Québec City:

Take a trip back in time and explore Old Québec, North America’s only walled city north of Mexico. Here you’ll find colonial architecture, unique shops and restaurants, and plenty of old-world European charm. Visit the Place Royal where Samuel de Champlain built what became the first permanent French settlement in North America. See the neoclassical façade and stained glass of the oldest church in Canada, the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral. Explore the antique shops, cafés, and art galleries of the Old Port and stroll along the St. Lawrence River. Visit Parliament Hill, see the iconic Château Frontenac, and discover over 400 years of history in this cultural heart of Québec City.

Expert Advice

diana

One of the best parts of traveling is coming back home with souvenirs that really reflect the place you’ve just been. In the Canadian Rockies, native handcrafts such as wood carvings and artwork by aboriginals are very popular. Look for jewelry made from Canadian materials such as ammonite (a rare fossil that produces a precious gem stone) and jade in British Columbia.

Canada e2

Please be sure to pack a warm sweater and jacket as well as gloves and a hat, as temperatures at higher elevations can change very quickly. Summer temperatures can also vary greatly when in the mountains. It is suggested that you bring a pair of sunglasses, especially while visiting the Icefields — it can be very bright.

Top 20 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Canada

Canada is the second-largest country in the world with a vast array of natural wonders, so any attempt to make a list of places in a country known for its sheer beauty will always be a tough ask!

Everyone will have their ideas, but from my time exploring this extraordinarily scenic country, here are my favorites…

1. Yellowknife/Northwest Territories

Yellowknife Canada

When you’re done walking around the oldest city in North America and ticked the polar bears off your wildlife list, I recommend properly heading up north in search of the Aurora Borealis, aka the Northern Lights.

As a natural phenomenon, you’re never guaranteed to see them, but Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories is a great place to try. Just remember to wrap up warm! To get one of the greatest glimpses into such a vast, sprawling country, how about going coast to coast, from Atlantic to Pacific?

Few people experience driving across the Trans-Canada Highway or riding the Canadian (a 1950s train journeying from Toronto to Vancouver over 3-4 days) in a single trip. Still, in my opinion, anyone who does so will remember it for the rest of their lives!

  • Address:  Northwest Territories, Canada
  • Location Map
  • Best time to visit: from early Sept to mid-April (to see the Nothern Lights).

My favorite highlights…

  • Taking a tour of the auroral oval to see the magnificent and breathtaking Northern Lights.
  • Exploring the Old Town on Great Slave Lake’s waterfront where I found an array of top restaurants and art shops.
  • Hiking along the Ingraham Trail to see Hidden Lake Territorial Park which featured Cameron Falls.

2. The Rockies

The Rockies Canada

While the entire Rockies also stretch through the USA, when it comes to jaw-dropping scenery, its northern neighbor comes up trumps, whether for hiking in the summer or skiing in the winter.

Comprising 5 National Parks ( Banff , Glacier, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho), this area should be near the top of any bucket list!

The Rocky Mountaineer is the train of choice for many honeymooners, and it’s easy to see why – glass-topped carriages giving superlative views onto glaciers, towering mountain peaks, waterfalls, canyons, and lakes so blue you’ll think your eyes have been Photoshopped.

  • Location:   Banff National Park, The Canadian Rockies.
  • Best time to visit: July to August

My highlights…

  • Admiring the stunning views of the surrounding landscape by taking a ride up the Banff Gondola.
  • Visiting the beautiful Moraine Lake, famous for being on the back of the Canadian dollar bill.
  • Take a dip in the warm waters of the hot springs filled with a soothing atmosphere.

3. Vancouver Island, Vancouver and the Johnstone Strait

Vancouver Island - most beautiful places to visit in Canada

After visiting Vancouver , I decided it’s up there with some of the best cities in the world. I loved how easy on the eye it was, the cool and cosmopolitan vibe, its incredible array of bars, restaurants, cafes and museums, the friendly locals and the striking skylines!

Next I explored the coast and surfers love the wild, epic waves here (though with a nickname of “Graveyard of the Pacific” the west coast should be approached with caution), and animal lovers come to spot the beautiful orcas in the waters of the Johnstone Strait.

Vancouver Island is another must-see in Canada. It is a famously gorgeous and tranquil spot with pristine scenery and pockets of quirky communities.

If you prefer something more sedate to all that excitement, I would recommend relaxing with something quintessentially British (well, you are in British Columbia, after all!) – afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel, Victoria, which is listed as one of the most ‘iconic hotels in the world.’

My must-do highlights…

  • Going kayaking to explore the picturesque lake waters and wildlife.
  • Wandering through The Butchart Garden’ s vibrant 55 acres of lush flowers and greenery.
  • Hiking the Wild Pacific Trail which took me around the rugged cliffs and coast of the island.
  • Photographing the iconic Capilano Suspension Bridge.
  • Going Whale watching –  I think this is a must-do from May to October!

4. Lake Louise

Lake Louise Canada

Beautiful Lake Louise is located in the Rockies but deserves a special mention!

You’ve seen the photos – with water almost impossibly turquoise (the result of minerals in the rock that flow into the lake after glacial erosion) – now it’s time to see the lake for yourself and get a picture of yourself.

I would say this isn’t the place to get away from it all – and certainly won’t be able to get away from thousands of other tourists – but some places are popular for good reason, and in my opinion, deserve to be visited anyway!

  • Location: Banff National Park
  • Map Location
  • Best time to visit: Summer

My favourite highlights…

  • Capturing an Insta-worthy shot with the famous electric blue lake as your backdrop.
  • Renting a canoe and spend time on the gorgeous waters.
  • Discovering the perfect bird’s eye view overlooking the lake via a hiking trail.

5. Churchill, Manitoba

Churchill Canada

To fans of seeing animals in their natural environment, this place is no longer a secret – it’s marketed as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World”, and it more than lives up to its name (I saw about 40 of them in one day on a recent trip – although you might want to check your traveler’s insurance before you go it can be a hairy experience!).

While it is already the premier destination for seeing these beautiful white bears, not everyone realises that it is also a fantastic place to see Beluga whales in late summer.

Add to that the opportunity, if you’re lucky, to see the Northern Lights in the deep of winter and to see colorful wildflowers in June-August, and it means this tiny town of around 1000 people has something to offer year-round.

  • Address: Manitoba, Canada
  • Map Location
  • Best time to visit: January, February and March (for Northern Light watching).
  • Seeing the Northern Lights, this is a great location to try and spot them!
  • Stopping by the Churchill Northern Studies Center to learn about the history and ecology of the area.
  • Wandering around the interesting Prince of Wales Fort, which is only accessible by boat.

6. On the trail of the Titanic in Nova Scotia

Halifax Canada

Despite visiting during a snowy blizzard, I still enjoyed my time in Halifax. Partly because I always wanted to say I’d been to Nova Scotia, but also because there is a wealth of history there.

Due to blanket snow, I couldn’t visit the “Titanic Graveyard”, as many of the fateful boat’s passengers are buried there. Pier 21, Canada’s equivalent to the USA’s Ellis Island, was the “Gateway to Canada” for thousands of immigrants from ocean liners from 1928-1971 and is now one of Canada’s most important museums.

Halifax also makes a good jumping-off point for drives further afield to Prince Edward Island or Cape Breton.

  • Location: Eastern seaboard of North America
  • Best time to visit: May and September
  • Taking a half-day guided tour to learn about the historic tragedy.
  • Exploring the Pier 21 museum to delve into the past of this interesting Canadian location.

7. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls Canada

Angel Falls may be higher, and Victoria Falls may be wider, but Niagara still holds the crown of the world’s most famous waterfall.

It provided the backdrop for one of Marilyn Monroe’s better films, has hosted countless weddings and honeymooning couples, and daredevils from across the globe have come to test themselves against the might of mother nature, either by crossing on a tightrope or throwing themselves over the edge in a barrel.

Thankfully, there are safer ways to enjoy the falls, namely the Maid of the Mist boat (tip: it’s worth letting people past you so that you’re at the front of the queue if you want to make sure you’re first into one of the wettest spots on the boat).

Everyone has their own opinion of which side is better (Canadian vs American) but as you may only visit once I’d suggest seeing it from both!

  • Location: Between Ontario, Canada and New York State, New York
  • Best time to visit: mid-May to mid-September

My highlights…

  • Soaring through the sky on the funWildPlay Zipline, which hits speeds of 40mph.
  • Getting a unique view of the majestic falls by riding the Skylon Tower 233 meters up high.
  • Checking out the adrenaline-pumping and award-winning Fallsview Indoor Waterpark !

Toronto City Canada

Even the most committed nature seekers will find themselves in a city at some point, so embrace all that urban life offers in Toronto. To me, it seemed like a smaller, cleaner, tidier version of New York.

The views from the CN Tower (which held the title of the world’s tallest freestanding structure for over 30 years) are as incredible as you’d imagine, while the Royal Ontario Museum is the best single summary of Canada’s cultural life and history.

For something unusual, I would suggest checking out the Cineforum (where local eccentric Reg Hartt will essentially show you short films and animations in his living room and maybe talk about LSD…), while the historic Distillery District is alive with cafes, art galleries, and idiosyncratic shops.

And finally, I would recommend walking up to the Gothic Revival stately home Casa Loma – in equal parts fascinating, quirky, and tragic!

  • Location: Ontario
  • Best time to Visit: late April through May and September through October
  • Wandering around Toronto Island Park, which featured beautiful trails, small beaches and a few amusement rides.
  • Watching a baseball game at the Rogers Center is a must-do activity.
  • Purchasing some fresh local produce from St Lawrence Market, a city landmark.

9. The Bay of Fundy

The Bay of Fundy Canada

Almost as world-famous as some other places on this list and easily as spectacular, kayakers and canoers come from all over the world to paddle through the jaw-dropping scenery and the planet’s highest tides.

The unique geography of the beautiful area also means that whale watching here is an essential experience – you might see humpback, fin, right whales, or even blue whales.

  • Location: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
  • Best times to visit: Spring, Summer and Fall
  • Admiring the spectacular Hopewell Rocks with their unusual formations created by the Fundy tides.
  • Watching the force of the tides in action from the observation deck, which has a clear glass-panelled floor.
  • Exploring the lush greenery and beautiful waterfalls at the National Park.

10. Quebec City

Quebec City Canada

In the French-speaking province of Quebec, Montreal is a fantastic city for many reasons little Quebec City may be a victim of its success in terms of popularity in my opinion, it’s still worth visiting!

The world’s most photographed hotel is in the center of town, North America’s only Ice Hotel is around 30 minutes away, and around every corner is a glimpse into another quaint side street or romantic cafe, making this 400-year-old city wonderful to explore on foot.

  • Location: Québec province
  • Best time to visit : June to September and December to February.
  • Walking across the incredible suspending bridge above Parc de la Chute-Montmorency.
  • Visiting the famous Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral which is filled with breathtaking architecture.
  • Having fun at fantastic Village Vacances Valcartier/Ice Hotel, which boasts the largest theme park in Canada.

11. Old Montreal

Old Montreal

Was I in Montreal or Marseilles? Aside from various billboards advertising poutine, I was hard-pressed to tell the difference. Take a walk down these beautiful boulevards, and you’ll be presented with quaint corner cafés, boutiques with pretty windows, impressive columns, and churches, all of which speak strongly of Canada’s colonial past.

You’ll be able to explore the numerous pretty cobbled streets, feel all cultural, and shop ‘til you drop simultaneously.

Check out the Basilica of Notre Dame before stopping for a cappuccino and taking the weight off your weary feet whilst you people-watch and try to get your head around it not being actual France.

  • Best times to visit : between April and May and September to November
  • Visiting the Notre Dame Basilica, the oldest Catholic parish church in the city, which is filled with spectacular interiors.
  • Riding on the La Grande Roue de Montreal for the best views overlooking the city.
  • Checking out the exhibitions in the Science Center.

12. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, British Columbia

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

Do you like heights? Enjoy sweaty palms? Relish dreams of falling? If so, then we’ve got what you need! The Capilano Suspension Bridge is one of Vancouver’s most visited attractions.

This 140-meter bridge spans the Capilano River (obviously) and sits over 300 feet above a verdant green valley. Hold your breath and strut across it. Fear or no fear, you’ll be glad you did.

The park sits within a beautiful scenic park with snowy peaks and pointing pines. Visit at the right time, and you’ll be in for a treat. It doesn’t even have to be daylight.

The park is bedecked with lights on many trees, bridges, and caverns. Have you ever seen Avatar? You’ll feel like you are in a James Cameron movie; don’t turn blue with the cold.

  • Address: 3735 Capilano Rd, North Vancouver, BC V7R 4J1
  • Best time to visit: It’s open every day except Christmas.
  • Admiring the best views overlooking the rainforest by walking across the adrenaline-pumping bridge.
  • Discovering the Treetops Adventure , it had amazing views!
  • Walking the thrilling Cliffwalk located on the edge of the granite stone.

13. Whistler

Whistler - Winter Canada

Home to one of the largest ski resorts in North America , Whistler is among the top tourist places in Canada for skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, and ski jumping. However, as a summer person, you can also explore mountain biking and hiking, as the hot weather is perfect.

Whistler receives over two million people per year, with its beautiful scenery and breathtaking panoramic views this city was also a host of the 2010 Winter Olympics. If you are having a long vacation, Vancouver is also a great destination, as it’s only under 2 hours from Whistler by car.

  • Location: north of Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Best time to visit: December to February for great skiing conditions.
  • Snowboarding!
  • Soaring through the forest on a zipline, the views were incredible!
  • Shopping in the village, there is a great range of independent boutiques.

14. Nahanni National Park Reserve

Nahanni National Park Reserve

If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that we love a UNESCO World Heritage site! If you say to most people ‘Canada’, this is what they think of. Wild turquoise rivers crash through steep-sided granite valleys. Pine trees dot grassy plains.

And if you visit in the summer, you’ll be presented with an ocean of color and wildflowers. This country is truly wild and beautiful and remains pretty much untouched. Please remember, leave only footprints and take only memories!

  • Location: Fort Smith, Unorganized, NT
  • Best time to visit: between June and August
  • Paddling through the Nahanni River on a kayak which passed incredible gorges, waterfalls and natural springs!
  • Climbing up the granite rocks for wonderful views of the landscape.
  • Take a flightseeing excursion!

15. Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Lunenburg - most beautiful places to visit in Canada

Lunenburg is a proper enigma. You’d get various answers if you plonked someone in the middle of town and asked them where they were without telling them anything else. The bright-colored building, of which over 70% are original, has a slight Scandinavian feel.

Which is weird as it was originally settled by the British over 400 years ago. Beautiful Lunenburg is one of only two towns that are designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. If you visit, you’ll be able to indulge in practically every sense. It is jam-packed with artisanal and often very local fayre.

Restaurants, breweries, and even the odd splash of local rum can be abundant. Turn your saturation filter to max (on the camera, not the rum) and make your friends jealous with photos of the pretty colored buildings!

  • Location: Nova Scotia
  • Dining at the fabulous Salt Shaker Deli and Inn which had great harbour views.
  • Taking a trip on the world-renowned racing ship champion, Bluenose II, who was undefeated for 17 years.
  • Exploring the charming Old Town Heritage District filled with colourful buildings and shops.

16. Cape Spear

Cape Spear - the best places to visit in Canada

Want to go to Canada? Want to be the first person in an entire continent to see the sunrise? If you answered ‘yes’ to both questions, you must visit the stunning Cape Spear. It is the most easterly point in the entire continent of North America.

If you set off swimming from the cape, the next place you’d reach would be The British Isles. Pack a flask of something hot (or maybe cold and sparkly) and head off on a walk.

Aside from an amazing (if chilly) sunrise over the Atlantic, you can check out the Cape Spear lighthouse, which sits atop a rocky promontory. It is quite remote but well worth the trip!

  • Location: St. John’s, NL A1C 5H2
  • Best time to visit: June to October
  • Going for a scenic hike along the Blackhead Path trail which offered brilliant views across the waters.
  • Climbing up the steps at the historic lighthouse and hearing the stories of the families who lived there for generations before.
  • Wandering along the Pretty Harbor fishing village located close to Cape Spear.

17. Lake Magog

Lake Magog

I have two words for you. Rugged, Beauty. And you’ll want to stay for more than a day to take it all in truly, and you won’t want to be in a hurry.

You’ll need to be made of strong stuff, especially if you embark on the 4-mile hike to Sunburst Peak, or you can wander down to the lake to cool your feet down.

It is glacially fed and, as a result, is crystal clear all year round. Breathe in a deep lungful of air about the freshest you will get on the planet and admire sweeping and wild vistas.

  • Location: Estrie region of Quebec.
  • Best time to visit: July to September
  • Soaking up the sun rays at the beach along the lake’s shores.
  • Discovering the enchanting scenery across Marais de la Rivière aux Cerises Park.
  • Going kayaking across the crystal-clear waters to grab some Insta-worthy shots.

18. Abraham Lake

Abraham Lake Canada

Want to see what human endeavor and nature look like when they interact. Check out the very pretty Abraham Lake. Why do I say this? You’d be entirely forgiven for thinking that Abraham Lake is a natural phenomenon. (Spoiler: it isn’t).

The lake was man-made after the Saskatchewan River was dammed in 1972. If you’d visited in the 60s, you’d probably have stood in a grassy valley. But the human endeavor isn’t the best bit about Lake Abraham. Something is going on under the surface, literally.

The lake is beautiful all year round, with milky blue glacial water. Here’s our advice. Visit in winter, bring your camera. Due to deposits of various flora on the lake bed, huge methane gas bubbles are released. These are then trapped at various layers under the frozen surface.

You’ll be presented with a cathedral of frozen wonder as these bubbles make miles of frozen subsurface columns. All are observed from your own private and unique viewing window.

Your best bet to avoid mishaps is to hire a guided tour. Walking on frozen lakes is cool but dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing.

  • Location: Western Alberta
  • Best time to visit: early January to mid-February (to see the ice bubbles)
  • Taking a scenic drive around the lake to discover the best views at the several lookout points located around the area.
  • Booking a guided rock climb for a memorable experience.
  • Packing a picnic and stopping off for a short break whilst admiring the picturesque scenery.

19. Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park

Okay this is officially mostly in Montana USA. Still, I’ve included it. It’s located right on the border of Canada and is an incredible place to visit if you’re exploring either country. Especially if you like hiking, you’ll love the 700 miles of gorgeous trails.

Visit in the autumn and you’ll be treated to hundreds of square miles of deciduous trees that are ablaze with color, like strips of burnt amber gold. It will be heaven for you if you are an ‘outdoorsy’ type.

Aside from walking there is the option to go kayaking climbing, and cycling. You name it. You can keep the accommodation costs cheap, provided you have a tent, as Glacier National Park is the ideal spot to return to nature.

  • Location: Border of Canada and Montana
  • Hiking the Hidden Lake Overlook Trail and discovering magnificent viewpoints of the pretty lake.
  • Going back in time with a 1930’s vintage Red Bus Tour which took me to the most popular landmarks.

20. Yoho National Park

Yoho National Park Canada

Stand on top of steep-sided gullies and breathe it in! The stunning views here are to die for. Whether you want to stop for the day and have a picnic or spend a few weeks walking to your heart’s content, the Yoho National Park has something for you.

Driving through the beautiful park alone is worth it, but ideally, you’ll want to stay and appreciate all it offers. This is the land that time forgot; if you take a guided tour, you’ll be able to traverse tracks cutting through scree-sided valleys and see if you can find a fossil or two.

It’s literally impossible not to be impressed by its size and scale here. Every direction you turn will take your breath away, I promise!

  • Location: Field, BC V0A 1G0
  • Exploring the stunning and vibrant Emerald Lake which is surrounded by lush forests.
  • Visiting the Natural Bridge and getting a great Insta-worthy shot.
  • Hiking to the impressive Wapta Falls, the biggest waterfall in the park which stands at 18-meters high.

Canada really is a wonderland! I feel like it is so underrated and then when people get a taste of it, they realize just how special it is. There’s still so much more I want to discover that is on your list! 🙂

I really like to share your all these images which look very fantastic and cool. I also enjoyed my self while I was visiting this kind of places. In my point of view all these places are the best ways to have great fun in Canada. I hope you will have a joyful time there.

This is a very good post Lee. All the places and photos are so beautiful to see and everyone wants to go there once. After watching these makes me want to go to Canada again and Brought back my memories when i go there.

You are so pretty and i would love to text you to see a play date for my kids with your kids if you have any!!!

Wow! this is a nice post for a traveler to know about canada’s beautiful places. I hope this post will be very helpful for every traveler. After saw this photos I am charmed and My mind wants to go away towards canada right now.

Great post Lee! Canada is truly a beautiful place even in the winter (despite the freezing temperatures!)

Nice places, I visited Niagara Falls only last year and it was most memorable trip for us. Falling views of Horseshoe waterfalls from table rock and Maid of the Mist boat ride was great experience for us.

Gorgeous photos, makes me want to go to Canada!

Your photos are amazing. I too love Canada yet have seen so little of it. I love going to Toronto, a big city with a great vibe and wonderful to explore.

Niagara Falls is also fabulous. I’ve seen it from both sides. The US side does have some fantastic views but I still think the Canadian side is better.

Great list and wonderful pictures! As a Canadian, I would definitely add Vancouver on the list too (although I suppose it’s sort of part of the rockies). It’s as cool, clean and urban as Toronto, but right on the ocean and surrounded by mountains. What more could you ask for?

Thanks for your comment Jessica!

Vancouver Island is an awesome place to live, I just want to go back…Vancouver is nice but too pricy, maybe that´s why is not in the list-!

Nice guide Lee sounds like you really enjoyed your time there.

I’ve always wanted to go to Canada, great guide to its beautiful places. I love the images you have chosen especially the first and the last.

Great post Lee. Brought back memories of a great holiday,

Thanks Pixie!

Great road trips define Canada .

Every province and territory can lay claim to a rich selection of magnificent journeys, but at the top of the list are a clutch of big-hitting scene-stealers – epic strips of asphalt doused with glints of only-in-Canada magic. Expect massive glaciers, foraging fauna, stormy coastlines and the kind of raw, uncompromising wilderness that’s rare if you head further south.

In this modern and affluent country, roads are generally wide and well-maintained and drivers are scrupulously polite. However, you can often go a long way without seeing a gas station or decent food, especially in the north, so stock up on supplies and emergency gear.

To sample our favorite road trips in Canada, load up your playlist with Drake, Rush and the Tragically Hip, and kiss the urban traffic snarl-ups goodbye.

Large RV driving along a highway that hugs the edge of a turquoise lake

1. Sea to Sky Highway, British Columbia

Best road trip for families Vancouver–Whistler; 121km (75 miles); allow 4–5 hours

From the deluxe, hill-hugging homes of West Vancouver to the neo-alpine ski village of Whistler , the Sea to Sky Highway rarely lets you out of its rapture. Comprising the most spectacular section of Hwy 99, which runs for 377km (234 miles) from the US border to Cache Creek, this drive traverses the steep-sided slopes of Howe Sound before contouring north through the Coast Mountains to Whistler.

If you can take your eyes off the collage of peaks, forests and fjords, this winding thoroughfare has many worthy stops, especially if you're in the market for hiking, climbing or mining history. Horseshoe Bay is the city’s main ferry terminal and the starting point for a tough, rocky hike up to Eagle Bluffs for eagle-eye views over Vancouver.

Further north, Britannia Beach is a one-time company town whose former mining facility – now a  museum and national historic site – concertinas down a steep hill. The small but growing town of Squamish is an obligatory stop for refueling (get gas at the local Shell station and coffee at the funky Zephyr Cafe ) and a ride on the finest gondola in BC.

Planning tip:  Locals fondly recommend an extended stop at Function Junction a few kilometers south of Whistler. You can hike through the forest to a 1950s train wreck that has been turned into an inspirational art project and buy lunch at peerless Purebread , possibly the finest purveyor of baked goods this side of Paris.

2. Icefields Parkway, Alberta

Best road trip for mountains and glaciers Lake Louise–Jasper; 230km (143 miles); allow 5–6 hours

The Icefields Parkway – or the Promanade des Glaciers, as it’s romantically known in French – is the crème de la crème of Canadian drives. This 230km (143-mile) trip links the nation’s two most emblematic national parks, Banff and Jasper , leaving even the most verbose travel writers flailing for adjectives.

Starting near the robin-egg-blue waters of Lake Louise , home to the elegant Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel , the route penetrates north through some of the most elemental scenery on the planet. Giant mountains, craning trees and powerful waterfalls are mere supporting acts to the gargantuan glaciers and abundant wildlife, which gets even more copious as you approach Jasper.

You'll pass a litany of potential stops en route, many offering access to superb viewpoints and short interpretive hikes. Headliners include cerulean Peyto Lake , Jasper’s “hanging” Skywalk and the Athabasca Glacier – a frozen tributary of the colossal Columbia Icefield.

Planning tip:  Thundering Athabasca Falls is at its deafening best during the spring snow-melt.

3. Klondike Hwy, Yukon

Best road trip for wilderness Skagway–Dawson City; 708km (440 miles); allow 2 days

Following the same basic route as the 19th-century’s greatest gold rush, this sealed highway starts in Skagway, Alaska , and crosses the Canadian border near the tiny town of Fraser, before passing through Carcross and the world’s smallest desert en route to Whitehorse . Here, you can wise up on territorial history and the nuances of the gold rush at the town’s McBride Museum .

Head north of Whitehorse for unadulterated wilderness. Be sure to stop at the Braeburn Lodge , a rustic roadhouse known for its sweet, soccer-ball-sized cinnamon buns and brusque backcountry service. Blink and you’ll miss the self-sufficient communities of Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. Plan for a longer stop at Five Finger Rapids, where a wooden staircase leads down to a viewing platform over the choppy Yukon River. The rafts of numerous Klondike prospectors upended on this rough stretch of water.

As you approach Dawson City, mine tailings from century-old dredging operations dot the roadside, alongside gravel piles and small ponds. The town is an understated beauty, filled with authentic gold rush history and the literary ghosts of novelist Jack London and poet Robert Service.

4. Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

Best road trip for a coastal drive St Ann’s Bay–St Ann’s Bay; 298km (186 miles); allow 1 day

One of the main reasons travelers come to Nova Scotia is to drive the Cabot Trail, the looping, dipping roller-coaster of a road that snakes its way around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island .

Offering epic views of rolling seas and thick forests, and – if you're lucky – the chance to spot a moose, eagle or even a whale, this maritime classic traverses the edge of Cape Breton Highlands National Park . The park is home to the province's grandest scenery, richest wildlife and best hiking trails .

Heading counterclockwise on this circular route, you’ll encounter Ingonish Beach , a long, wide ribbon of sand sheltered in a bay cocooned by gentle hills, and Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia’s premier whale-watching hub. The Skyline Trail, the Cabot’s hiking highlight, meanders through evergreen forests and along windy cliff-tops to a spectacular ridge.

Other favorite stops include Cheticamp, Nova Scotia's most vibrant and thriving Acadian community, and Baddeck, home to a museum dedicated to former resident Alexander Graham Bell, pioneer of the very handy device known as the telephone.

A sheer rock formation just off the tip of the land where it meets the sea. A couple of houses sit exposed to the elements

5. Gaspésie Tour, Québec

Best road trip for French-Canadian culture Sainte-Flavie–Sainte-Flavie; 822km (511 miles); allow 3 days

Towering cliffs, freshly-caught seafood and Québécois sea shanties are all on the itinerary as you circle La Gaspésie , the lofty peninsula contoured by Rte 132 on Québec ’s eastern shores. Easing out of Sainte-Flavie, make time to stop near Pointe-à-la-Croix at the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site , where a French-British naval clash in 1760 marked the death knell for French colonial ambitions in Canada.

The Parc National de Miguasha has the world's leading cache of ancient fish fossils, with a museum illustrating how prehistoric sea creatures evolved into tetrapods. The crown jewels of the Gaspé Peninsula are Rocher Percé , a huge offshore limestone rock formation with a seemingly gravity-defying archway, and blustery Forillon National Park , where mountains plunge directly into the choppy ocean and rugged cliffs stand sentinel over spouting whales.

Planning tip:  After rounding the tip of the peninsula, you’ll head back along the St Lawrence waterway where it’s worth scheduling a lengthy stop in the Parc National de la Gaspésie . A short drive inland from Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, the park is a rough mountainous realm with fine hiking options.

A huge iceberg floats by an island. A gull stands nearby, giving a sense of perspective to the scale of the 'berg

6. Viking Trail, Newfoundland

Best road drive for archaeology Deer Lake–St Anthony; 434km (270 miles); allow 1 day

Imagine ancient indigenous burial grounds, 1000-year-old Viking remains, monumental icebergs, breaching whales and an almost supernatural national park whose trippy tablelands are a textbook guide to plate tectonics. Welcome to Newfoundland’s epic Rte 430, which links a patchwork of fog-cloaked coves, snow-capped mountains and stormy fjords.

Starting inauspiciously in the town of Deer Lake, the route plunges into Gros Morne National Park pausing at its waterside hub, Rocky Harbour, a nexus for trails and boat trips with a fun wildlife museum .

Further north lie two important archaeological sites: Port au Choix , a national historic site dedicated to the 5500-year-old burial grounds of three different indigenous groups, and L'Anse aux Meadows , where Leif Erikson and his Viking buddies arrived approximately 1000 years ago – the first known European settlers in the Americas.

Planning tip:  The trail ends at St Anthony, a small fishing village with a rough-hewn charm that makes a perfect stop for whale- and iceberg-watching.

Man standing in the water of a lake

7. Lake Superior Coastline, Ontario

Best road trip for lakes Sault Ste Marie–Thunder Bay; 700km (435 miles); allow 2 days

Even Canada’s most populated province can seem positively remote as you motor along the northern shores of the world’s largest freshwater lake, following a quiet segment of the Trans-Canada Hwy through a necklace of provincial parks.

Pancake Bay Provincial Park hides one of Canada's finest stretches of sugary sand, and if you pull up off-season, you might have it all to yourself. Lake Superior Provincial Park protects a more precipitous coastline punctuated with the exposed rock of the Canadian Shield.

There are indigenous pictographs in the area and fabulous opportunities for stargazing (the park was designated a dark sky preserve in 2018).  Similar solitude awaits at Rocky Neys Provincial Park , where Lawren Harris of the Group of Seven came to paint amid craggy beaches and roaming caribou.

Approaching Thunder Bay, you'll pass the jagged Sleeping Giant Peninsula – a series of flat-topped ridges that resemble a large reclining man. The rugged, forested terrain here is characterized by cliffs, hiking trails and plentiful fauna, including moose, wolf and lynx.

The 11 Best Canadian Train Trips

By Michael Kaminer and Matt Ortile

Rocky Mountaineer

Canada is second only to Russia when it comes to land mass, which means seeing the country's vast wilderness can be overwhelming. Luckily, Canadian train trips criss-cross most of it, and these rail journeys allow you to take in some of the world's most spectacular scenery, stress-free. Just imagine: the nation's vistas unfolding before you slowly (or swiftly, depending on your chariot) while you remain in the comfort of your seat. On top of that, some of the Canada's most remote—and beautiful—spots lack road access, so a train ride may also be the only way to visit. All the more reason to climb on board .

Read on to learn more about 11 of the most beautiful Canadian train trips you can take across the Great White North, as well as some recommendations for where to stay at the beginning or at the end of your railroad adventure. (And for more fabulous train rides, check out the results of Condé Nast Traveler 's Readers' Choice Awards 2023 to see which trains our readers voted the best in the world .)

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Via Rail passenger train travelling through Rocky Mountains British Columbia Canada.

Via Rail’s Winnipeg to Churchill

This 1,054-mile trip north feels more interplanetary than provincial, whisking you from urban Winnipeg to the tundras of Churchill , known as the polar bear capital of the world. Accessible by plane or train only, it’s also prime turf for beluga whale-watching , and possibly the world’s best perch to view the northern lights. Landscapes en route are breathtaking, with stops including tiny river towns The Pas, Thompson, and Weir River. Splurge on Via’s Sleeper Plus class for access to a bed and shower.

Where to stay: In Winnipeg, check into the impressive and century-old Fort Garry Hotel , a prime example of twentieth-century châteauesque architecture, including prominent cornices and a steep sloping copper roof. In case you needed a bit more of that old-world feel to your trip.

View of cattle grazing in front of Rocky Mountains from Foothills near Cochrane Alberta Canada

Ontario Northland’s Polar Bear Express, Cochrane to Moosonee

Ontario is larger than France and Spain combined, but most visitors stick to its big southern cities. Embarking from tiny Cochrane—nearly 500 miles north of Toronto —the Polar Bear Express chugs five hours further north to Moosonee, so remote it lacks road access. The route mimics a path fur traders favored centuries ago, through a primeval landscape of thick forests and winding rivers. Note that reaching Cochrane involves a flight to northeastern Timmins and an overnight bus ride.

Where to stay: Break up your adventure with a night at Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa in Timmins, Ontario. The place is all about rural and cozy vibes, letting you bask in the natural beauty of nearby Gillies Lake Park and Hollinger Park.

Agawa Canyon Tour Train Ontario

Agawa Canyon Tour Train, Ontario

It’s only accessible by trail or rail, which makes Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park near Sault Sainte-Marie such a thrill to visit. Hop on and off this 90-minute ride as you pass four dramatic waterfalls and a trail system that overflows with pristine natural beauty. Bonus: Beavers, the most Canadian of critters, traipse through here frequently.

Where to stay: Since this tour train takes just an hour and a half, you'll need a place to rest your head in Sault Sainte-Marie before continuing your journey. Luckily, the Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront is near the station, and offers cool views of Saint Mary's River and the United States beyond.

Canadian Rockies

Royal Canadian Rockies Experience, Banff to Calgary, Alberta

Canada’s glitziest train ride is also one of its most cinematic, passing through splendid Banff and Lake Louise, along with jaw-dropping sights like Alberta’s Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a World Heritage Site where Indigenous people hunted ruminants by enticing them to leap off a cliff. Still eager to see more? At the end of the line, you can book a helicopter trip over the Rockies for a bird's eye view.

Where to stay: In Banff, you shouldn't miss the Fairmont Banff Springs . This Scottish Baronial fortress grants you a million-dollar view of those majestic snow-dusted mountain tops, which makes the moniker “the Castle in the Rockies” all the more fitting.

Via Rail’s The Canadian, Toronto to Vancouver

A single train journey can’t capture Canada’s magnificence, but this four-night/three-day adventure from Toronto to Vancouver comes close. You’ll take in prairies, lakes, peaks, valleys, hamlets, waterfalls, and, if you’re lucky, cameos by local wildlife like deer, elk, and bears. If you can, book a seat in Prestige Class—think concierge, superb meals, private lounges—for one of the most comfortable train trips you’ll ever take.

Where to stay: Once you're in Vancouver, keep the plush and casually fabulous energy going with a night or two at the dreamy Shangri-La Vancouver , where those who appreciate the subtleties of luxury travel won't be disappointed.

White Pass and Yukon Route, Yukon

Even today, building a railway through the mountains, glaciers, and gorges of Gold Rush country remains an impressive feat, let alone in 1898, when this route was first built. Survey views of the Yukon, BC, and Alaska , as your train rises a gut-churning 3,000 feet in just 20 miles to the summit of White Pass. Touring such treacherous terrain will leave you appreciating how the railway helped knit a nascent Canada together.

Where to stay: There aren't many hotel options in Skagway, Alaska, where this train journey begins. That said, there are a handful of cruises that call at this Alaskan port town, including options aboard Celebrity Cruises , so you can make this a two-for-one adventure.

If theres one Canadian train ride that should make your bucket list its the journey on the Rocky Mountaineer from...

Rocky Mountaineer's First Passage to the West, Western Canada

If there’s one Canadian train ride that should make your bucket list, it’s the journey on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff . The whole ride is scenic, offering glimpses into the Great White North’s wildlife as well as its important Indigenous history. Thoughtful guides and storytellers onboard talk you through the locales and vistas from the comfort of your plush leather seats underneath the train cars’ glass-domed roofs. Meals here are delicious too, no matter which class of service you’re in, whether it’s SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf (though the latter’s linen-covered tables are a classy touch).

Where to stay: The Rocky Mountaineer is often spoken about in the same breath as other famous luxury train rides across the world: the Orient Express , Seven Stars Kyushu , or the Royal Scotsman . But unlike those, this isn’t a sleeper train. It travels exclusively by daylight, making the most of the scenery. At night, guests check into a hotel along the route—so your comfort throughout the journey is assured.

Train de Charlevoix, Quebec

Inaugurated in 1889, when it connected Quebec City to remote Charlevoix, this train line cruises along a glorious section of St. Lawrence coastline. Much of the scenery en route seems unchanged a century and a half later, with the mighty river on one side and lush landscapes on the other. Stops include enchanting coastal villages like Baie-St-Paul; consider splitting the journey over two days to explore. The route runs June through October.

Where to stay: Before you climb onboard the train in Quebec City, prep for your journey in old Basse-Ville (meaning “lower city”) at the boutique hotel Monsieur Jean , which offers bright and breezy digs melded with friendly Quebecois hospitality.

Via Rail, Jasper, Alberta to Prince Rupert, BC

The windows-only Dome Car on this nature-filled route offers 360-degree views of the regal Canadian Rockies. During the seven-hour train ride, you’ll also get an ocean’s worth of lakes, including beautiful Yellowhead, Lucerne, and Moose. Have more time? The train heads to coastal Prince Rupert the next morning, where whale-watching and grizzly-bear-viewing are highlights. Bonus: At the Alberta-British Columbia border, the train crosses the Continental Divide.

Where to stay: Once you're on Kaien Island and the train pulls into the port city of Prince Rupert, head for the Crest Hotel , where you can wake up to beautiful waterfront views of—what else?—Prince Rupert Harbour.

Rocky Mountaineer's Journey Through the Clouds, British Columbia and Alberta

The Canadian Rockies’ tallest peak, majestic Mount Robson, is the star of this ten-day journey from Vancouver to Calgary. But it’s hard to pick a highlight when your trip spans sights like British Columbia’s astonishing Hell’s Gate—twice the width of Niagara Falls—and Moose Lake, home to plenty of its namesake. You’ll also get a glimpse of the gargantuan Albreda Glacier, a landscape dating back eons.

Where to stay: When in Canada, you can't go wrong with a Fairmont, and the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary is a true beaut. Plus, it's sandwiched between the city's downtown and the Calgary Design District, so you'll have plenty of sightseeing options when you get off the train.

Climbing north into remotest Quebec and east into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, this aptly-named, 836-mile trip lets the wide-open spaces and clear-blue waters unfold like aqua-tinted postcards. Bonus: The Ocean is the oldest continuously running named passenger train in North America, rolling along since 1904.

Where to stay: In Montreal you've got the pick of the litter, but the stately yet modern Hotel Birks Montreal and the classically luxurious Four Seasons Montreal take the cake. Meanwhile, in Halifax, you've got the super sleek Muir, Autograph Collection in the downtown waterfront area, and the richly cozy The Pebble Bed & Breakfast in the South End for an inn-in-the-city experience.

The famous Rocky Mountaineer train connects British Columbia and Alberta, running through the Canadian Rockies. It only runs during the day. There are scenic unique routes, with stops in Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise, Vancouver or Whistler.

The train offers two levels of service, GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf. GoldLeaf has a full-domed upper level, with spacious reclining seats. Guests eat in the lower-level dining room. Other amenities include an outdoor viewing platform, complimentary beverages and snacks, and dedicated hosts.

Via Rail

As Canada’s major passenger rail service, VIA Rail connects Canada from Vancouver to Halifax. It offers four different train routes. Major city stops include Vancouver, Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Halifax. Depending on the train route, VIA Rail offers daylight or overnight sleeper train experiences. Its train cars feature large picture windows, so you can take in the vast Canadian landscape. Some trains offer a Panorama car, where giant windows extend to the ceiling.

#2 Travel tip: Cover more Canada on the train

For first-time visitors to Canada who want to take in as much as possible, a trans-Canada train journey is an ideal trip. Add time in terminal cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax to explore.

Blog Author - Athena McKenzie

1. Daylight Train

The Rocky Mountaineer runs from April to the end of September during daylight hours. It follows this schedule to make the most of the amazing views in the Canadian Rockies. Guests are transferred to hotels for overnight stops, and do not sleep on the train.

2. Passenger Train

VIA Rail is Canada’s main passenger train. It connects the country from Vancouver to Halifax with four major train routes. It offers different classes of train cars. Business class gets lounge access, food and beverage service included, priority boarding, extra luggage and wider, comfortable seating.

3. Sleeper Train

There are two train routes in Canada which allow you to sleep on the train. The first is between Vancouver and Toronto on The Canadian. You can break up this route with stop-overs in Jasper or Winnipeg. The second route with a sleeper train is the Ocean train from Montreal to Halifax. Both sleeper train routes are available all year long. Some sleeper trains in Canada are equipped with special panoramic viewing cars to provide you with the best view of the scenery day or night.

Vancouver to Toronto

VIA Rail’s The Canadian connects Toronto and Vancouver. It stops in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Jasper. This route can also be travelled in reverse. This train covers a total of 2762 miles, which takes about 86 hours. Enjoy sweeping views in the Panorama car, where giant windows extend up to the ceiling. Travelling from Toronto to Vancouver, the Canadian carries you from the forests of Ontario, through the expanse of the Prairies, and past the dramatic snow-capped Rocky Mountains.

Montreal to Halifax

VIA Rail’s The Ocean train connects Montreal to Halifax. The 839-mile journey takes approximately 21 hours. It has been running since 1904 and is the oldest continuously operated named passenger train in North America. You'll first travel through the French-speaking province of Quebec. Then past a backdrop of lighthouses and seascapes in the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia. As you relax onboard, you'll see tiny communities along your route, representing French Canadian, Acadian, Celtic and English heritage.

Vancouver to the Rockies

Along with a segment of VIA Rail’s The Canadian route, The Rocky Mountaineer runs from Vancouver through the Rockies. There are three different routes to enjoy. The Rainforest to Gold Rush connects North Vancouver and Jasper, with stops in Whistler and Quesnel. The Journey through the Clouds also connects Vancouver to Jasper, but takes the Yellowhead pass, and stops in Kamloops. The First Passage to the West connects Vancouver to Banff, with a stop in Kamloops.

Canadian rockies and west coast.

Western Canada is known for its dramatic wild landscapes. This includes the mountains and glacier lakes of the Canadian Rockies. It also extends to the lush rainforests and Pacific Coastlines of British Columbia. It’s one of Canada’s most popular locations for a train vacation. Many remote areas are only accessible by rail. Spend an extra day or two exploring the city of Vancouver as well.

Across Canada

Make the journey across the country by rail. This coast-to-coast train trip connects Vancouver to Halifax, with stops in major cities, such as Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. If you only have one trip to Canada, this lets you see it all. Highlights include the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, the Canadian Rockies, and the Prairies.

Eastern Canada and Maritimes

Along with amazing scenery, there’s lots of history and culture to explore in Eastern Canada. Visit the cities of Toronto and Montreal. Add a tour to famous places, like Niagara Falls, and the not-so-famous hidden gems, like the charming fishing towns of the Maritimes. There’s a lot to discover in eastern Canada.

North and Arctic

Taking the train to Churchill is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This community sits on the edge of Hudson Bay. It takes two days and two nights of travelling north on the rails to get there. There are no roads into this subarctic region.

Nestled amid the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, this tiny mountain town in Alberta appeals to both nature enthusiasts and luxury seekers. Visitors can spend their days skiing or hiking in Banff National Park (one of Canada's most beautiful national parks and home of the glacier-fed Moraine Lake) and floating down the Bow River on a canoe before retiring to one of the area's several opulent hotels for some spa therapy. Then, for incredible views of the Rockies, take a ride on the Banff Gondola. Meanwhile, daytrips to popular attractions like the Columbia Icefield, Yoho National Park and Lake Louise cannot be left off of your itinerary.

As the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, Jasper is ripe for exploration. When you're not hiking through Maligne Canyon, whitewater rafting down the Athabasca River or snapping photos of Spirit Island, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the picture-perfect scenery from the Jasper SkyTram. Or, take in the beauty of Jasper National Park while driving along the Icefields Parkway. Keep your eyes peeled for the 53 species of mammals that call this Alberta park home, including black bears, elk and bighorn sheep.

A trip to this British Columbia city, which sits approximately 145 miles north of Seattle, is all about embracing the outdoors. Vancouverites spend their days skiing on Grouse Mountain, swimming at Kitsilano Beach and strolling through the sprawling Stanley Park. Plus, Vancouver offers plenty of cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries and outdoor markets (a tour of Granville Island is a must-do). If you're not afraid of heights, walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which is positioned 230 feet above the Capilano River.

Travel to this iconic destination in southeastern Ontario to see and capture photos of its namesake world-famous tourist attraction . View Niagara Falls from above during a helicopter tour, or see them up close on the Maid of the Mist boat tour. Or, for a unique perspective, admire the thunderous falls from behind with the self-guided Journey Behind the Falls experience. After you've taken in the splendor, check out the area's other top attractions, such as the Niagara Glen Nature Centre, which offers a variety of hiking trails. When you've had your fill of nature, head to nearby wineries or test Lady Luck at the casinos.

Referred to as the "small city with a big backyard," Whitehorse – the capital of Canada's Yukon territory – shines with all of its outdoor activities. Explore Miles Canyon, which is accessible from Whitehorse on foot (a nearly 10-mile loop trail connects the city directly to this natural wonder). After, head north to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you'll find all kinds of animals, including arctic foxes, elk, muskox and bison. Even though this region gets notoriously cold, you might want to time your visit around the first couple of weeks of winter for a chance to witness the northern lights.

A trip to Europe may not be in your budget, but a visit to Québec City could be. This Canadian city charms visitors with its picturesque centuries-old buildings that make up Old Québec – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, the aromas of freshly baked bread and brewing espresso fill the cobblestone streets of the Quartier Petit-Champlain with the essence of Paris. Once you've gotten your fill of the city, take a trip to Montmorency Falls Park to marvel at its 272-foot-tall waterfall. Plan your visit for winter when the city comes alive with twinkling lights, festivals and cold-weather activities – just remember to pack your down jacket .

Take adventure travel up a notch with a visit to Whistler. In winter, this resort town in British Columbia (about 75 miles north of Vancouver) boasts everything from cross-country skiing and snowboarding to bobsled rides and bungee jumping. Travelers can spend their downtime in Whistler Village enjoying the après-ski scene, perusing locally owned shops or strolling through Whistler Olympic Plaza. Meanwhile, visitors in town when the weather is warmer can go hiking, fishing, horseback riding, kayaking and more. Plus, summer travelers will love exploring Brandywine Falls Provincial Park, home to the 230-foot-tall waterfall from which the park gets its name.

Home to rolling green hills, sandy beaches, red sandstone cliffs and a delicious bounty of seafood (this is where PEI mussels come from, after all), Prince Edward Island is the place to travel for a relaxing respite from Canada's more adventure-driven destinations. When you're not hiking the trails at Prince Edward Island National Park, perfect your swing at one of the island's golf courses or visit the Green Gables Heritage Place, where the 1908 novel, "Anne of Green Gables" was inspired. And be sure to keep an eye out for PEI's seal population (four kinds call the island home either full or part time).

This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses nearly 700 square miles of land on Newfoundland's west coast. Its top activity is undoubtedly hiking through the Tablelands. Here, you'll traverse exposed earth mantle, a rust-colored landscape that was created millions of years ago by a collision of tectonic plates. Also save time for a boat ride on Western Brook Pond, which is a glacier-carved, landlocked fjord that features cascading waterfalls measuring 2,000 feet. After getting a taste of nature, learn about the region's history at the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse.

Montréal is a city of juxtaposition: Skyscrapers rub elbows with Old Montréal's 17th-century architecture while the familiar sounds of English intermingle with the foreign buzz of French – the official language of Québec province. Visit Old Montréal to get a taste of Europe (think: beautiful architecture and cobblestone streets), including its own Notre-Dame Basilica, a grand Gothic Revival-style church that offers self-guided tours along with an evening sound and light show. Then head to modern attractions, such as the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts. Meanwhile, if you're visiting during the warmer months, don't miss out on the Montréal Botanical Garden and the scenic Mount Royal Park.

While Montréal and Québec City honor Canada's French roots, Victoria pays tribute to the country's British heritage. Many pay a visit to Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, for afternoon tea, a tour of the beautiful Parliament Buildings or a history lesson at the Royal BC Museum. Others are interested in visiting Vancouver Island's wineries to sample local vinos. Meanwhile, animal lovers enjoy the abundance of marine wildlife that call the waters surrounding Victoria home. In fact, there are nearly 80 orca whales in Victoria's waters. What's more, since Victoria is one of the most sustainable urban destinations in North America, visitors can feel good about the impact of their trip.

"Big" doesn't even begin to describe this Ontario city. With cultural pockets like Greektown, Little India and Koreatown all within city limits, Toronto has the ability to transport visitors around the globe. Take it all in with a ride up the 1,815-foot-tall CN Tower, or enjoy a quintessentially Canadian experience at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Then, head to the St. Lawrence Market to sample gourmet goodies before checking out the nearby Harbourfront Centre. And if the weather is right, plan a visit to the Toronto Islands, where you can relax on the beach, go kayaking or enjoy an afternoon bike ride.

The star of this national park on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island is the world-famous Cabot Trail – one-third of which runs through the park. As you drive the winding highway, which is considered one of the world's most scenic drives, you'll pass forested river canyons, rural fishing villages and plenty of lookout points for admiring Nova Scotia's serene landscape. Prefer to explore the park on your own two feet? There are 26 hiking trails to choose from, as well as opportunities for kayaking, mountain climbing, camping and more.

Located a little more than 80 miles northwest of Montréal in Québec's Laurentian Mountains, Mont-Tremblant is best known for its skiing, specifically Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, which occupies the highest peak in the mountain range. But warm-weather visitors are equally enchanted by its Parc national du Mont-Tremblant, which boasts six rivers and 400 lakes and streams, not to mention countless hiking trails and beaches. Water sports, fishing and mountain biking are all popular here thanks to the area's diverse landscape.

Stretching across more than 150 miles, the Okanagan Valley is home to 86% of British Columbia's vineyard acreage and features more than 200 world-class wineries. There are also a variety of subregions in the valley, each promising its own unique experiences and grape varietals. If you are looking to combine wine tasting with outdoor pursuits, visit the Naramata Bench. This area is packed with wineries and offers everything from kayaking to mountain biking. No matter which area you visit, you'll enjoy spectacular views that rival those of the world's best wine regions .

Scenic Train Trips Across Canada

John Borthwick / Getty Images

Canadian train trips offer stunning scenery and provide more than just transportation from point A to B. Though train travel in Canada tends to be more expensive than bus or sometimes even air travel,  train travel  is relaxing, scenic, and social. The romance of the train is alive and well on Canada's major rail systems.

Canada's national rail system is VIA Rail , and it offers a fairly extensive system of rail transportation across the country, though not in every province. Other rail companies provide relatively luxurious, scenic adventures or unique vintage experiences.

Rocky Mountaineer: Calgary, Alberta, to Vancouver, British Columbia

One of several scenic train runs offered by Rocky Mountaineer, the  First Passage to the West  between Calgary and Vancouver retraces the steps of 19th-century explorers and passes by the spot where the Last Spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. Travel three, four, or five nights through mountains, canyons, rivers, and glaciers.

Rocky Mountaineer: Vancouver to Whistler, British Columbia

The Whistler  Sea to Sky Climb  is a three-hour journey that takes passengers past some of Canada's most stunning scenery. The train hugs Howe Sound, water inlets, Cheakamus Canyon, snow-capped mountain peaks, and an old mining town before arriving at  Whistler Village  mountain resort. The train runs northbound to Whistler in the morning and southbound back to Vancouver in the afternoon, so many people stay at least one night in Whistler to break up the trip.

VIA Rail: Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to Jasper, Alberta

This train  travels 720 miles (1,160 kilometers) between the Rockies and the North Pacific Coast through remarkable and varied landscapes. Passengers will see lakes, rivers, mountains, dotted by historic villages, farms, and sawmills out the train's windows. Wildlife, like bear, moose, elk, wolves, and eagles are also known to inhabit the area. This trip has an overnight layover in  Prince George  where guests can book a room at a hotel or bed-and-breakfast.

Polar Bear Express: Northern Ontario

The  Polar Bear Express  connects the coastal communities of Moosonee and Moose Factory to Cochrane, offering visitors the chance to experience the people and landscape of Northern Ontario. This trip does not have the wide appeal that Rocky Mountaineer, for example, does and is more for train enthusiasts and those with a particular interest in First Nations culture or just a desire to travel well off the beaten path.

The Polar Bear Express is a traditional train with limited comforts and is notoriously delayed. The 186-mile route between Cochrane and Moosonee is scenic, but once in Moosonee, there isn't much to do. In addition, the name of the Polar Bear Express is a misnomer in that few polar bears are seen in this region of Canada.

Agawa Canyon: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

This scenic exploration of Northern Ontario takes passengers 114 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie and back again. This rugged landscape features granite rock formations, towering trestles, and mixed forests typical of the Canadian Shield. This 10-hour Agawa Canyon rail excursion includes a stunning coast down into the Agawa Canyon, at which point passengers are invited to roam the area and enjoy its beauty, including four waterfalls, close up. The Agawa Canyon train trip is particularly popular in late September to early October when fall foliage is peaking.

South Simcoe Railway: Ontario

This tourist attraction was lovingly restored by a community intent on preserving railroad heritage. Between May and October, people board this hour-long scenic journey on the South Simcoe Railway between Tottenham and Beeton, Ontario, through the Beeton Creek Valley. You'll ride in restored 1920s coaches for this vintage train trip and hear commentary from the conductor.

The South Simcoe Railway  is the only operating European steam engine in Canada and one of the last operating excursion steam engines in Canada. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007.

VIA Rail: Cross Country, Toronto to Vancouver

If you want to get a true sense of the breadth and diversity of Canada, book a trip on VIA Rail's  The Canadian . This cross-country journey begins in Toronto and takes four days to traverse the more than 2,700 miles (4,400 kilometers), five provinces, and four time zones to reach Vancouver on the Pacific Coast. The Canadian showcases Canada's forests, lakes, mountains, and expansive prairie grasslands as well as the people who inhabit the cities and towns along the way: places as urban as  Toronto  and as remote and picturesque as Blue River, British Columbia (population 269).

VIA Rail: Churchill to Winnipeg, Manitoba

This two-day, 1,000-mile (1,700-kilometer) journey from Winnipeg to the subarctic region of Northern Manitoba gives passengers the chance to see the Northern Lights, polar bears, First Nations culture, and some beautiful northern landscape. This train route runs year-round, but it's between October and November that the polar bears make their trek through Churchill and can be viewed close up in "tundra buggies." On trips in the summertime, you'll see beluga whales and experience the midnight sun.

VIA Rail: Montreal to Halifax, Nova Scotia

This overnight, 836-mile (1,346-kilometer) trip on The Ocean route connects two of eastern Canada's most bustling cities. Though very different,  Montreal  and Halifax both have much to offer visitors and are excellent examples of the different cultures and history that make up Canada. Begin your journey in the early evening in Montreal, a city with one of the world's largest French-speaking populations and a culture steeped in European tradition, and end in Halifax, a busy Canadian port city that's brimming with maritime hospitality.

A ride on  The Ocean is a great chance to experience the romance of train travel, including sleeping and dining, and some gorgeous scenery in less than 24 hours.

A Warm " Welcome to Canada " awaits

Everyone in English and French Canada - Everywhere in this wonderful, expansive, Friendly neighbor to our North

What Adventures and what Fun lie ahead on every one of our exciting Tours of Canada .  From the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies and the laid-back Class of Vancouver and Victoria - to the sophisticated charm of Montreal - the world's second largest French speaking city - chic high fashion, vibrant night life,   River Cruises, history - just so much to see in our friendly, welcoming northern neighbor.  Each of the Provinces offers its own brand of warm, friendly people just waiting for you and your friends to explore.

Food in Canada tends to be Hearty and Healthy and YUMMY .  Ottawa offers cuisines of many different countries while Montreal favors French delicate flavors and sauces. Be sure to try some Poutine.

Atlantic Canada, the Maritimes, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are just a short ferry ride form Portland, Maine.   French-speaking Quebec has a definite European flair.  The Canadian Capital of Ottawa is charming, cosmopolitan, and sophisticated - and the Rocky Mountains are stunningly spectacular.  Lake Louise, Banff, Calgary - then on the West Coast, Vancouver is more relaxed and it fills-in for many US Cities in TV shows and Movies.

For You we offer One Exceptional Tour that combines the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains in Canada AND the Rocky Mountains of the United States.   Stunning dramatic scenery, Mountain lakes and Cruises, Train Tours and hearty meals  in BOTH countries.  From Glacier National Park to Lake Louise, Your tour fulfills every dream that you have ever had - stories of the Mountain Men and Transcontinental Railroads.  Sleep and dine on your train - enjoy the scenery, and the people, and the hearty meals.

The WEST was explored by 3 Countries - France - England - United States of America.  After the French left in 1759 and the English in 1783, it was left tfor Americans in the United States, and Canadians, still governed by England - to Explore this vast area occupied only by Natives and a smattering of French and English Fur Traders.

Alexander MacKenzie became the first Explorer to Cross the Rocky Mountains and reach the Pacific Ocean, 12 years BEFORE Lewis and Clark - a shorter distance that he completed in 9 months with one Winter campsite.   Much like Lewis and Clark, he was accompanied by 9 French "Voyageurs", fur trappers, one cousin, and a dog.  Not as well planned, with far fewer people, and on a much shorter route, MacKenzie's Party was the First, north of Mexico, to reach an inlet of the Pacific Ocean.

      - 12 Years later,  the USA bought the Louisiana Territory from France, and President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark  to explore the region, and report back.  It took almost three years and many people had given them up for lost.  Accompanied by more than 25  French " Voyageurs ", Trappers and Fur Traders, the Lewis and Clark Expedition opened the vast land that we now call " The West "

Please, to give you some background - watch the wonderful Movie "How the West Was Won"  it is fairly accurate although somewhat condensed - but the "essence" is there.  So, Come, Come, there's a wonderous land, full of hopeful hearts and a willing hand ....."

- Canada Notes -

“Our Wonderful Neighbors to the North"

- Here are Many Helpful Tips -

... to Help Make your Canadian Tour even MORE   Enjoyable ...

CNaCaNo   Page 1/2   1308

“Bienvenue au Canada  =  Welcome to Canada”

Canada, our nearest international neighbor, is one of the most interesting places you can visit.  The people are very friendly with a happy outlook on life and eager to help you.  Most everyone speaks English as either a first or second language.  In Quebec Province, please be patient if they don’t understand your English.  Their first language may be French!  The French they speak is similar to the way we speak English compared to the English of an Englishman. Many words are common in the Canadian and American language if you listen carefully.

- Most important ... have a good time. Relax and Enjoy !

From Montreal, “The Paris of North America” to the quaint streets and horse drawn carriages of Quebec City, to Ottawa, a very cosmopolitan Capital City , Toronto, the commercial heart of modern Canada with more Broadway shows than anyplace else except.....well.....Broadway! .....and the charming seafaring city of Halifax in Nova Scotia.   Plus the beautiful Pacific west coast city of Vancouver ..... Of these cities, Toronto and Vancouver are frequently used as movie sets to represent American Cities.  You can’t possibly see it all, but you are going to have a chance to taste just enough of the history, the people, the food, and the vibrant atmosphere that makes up modern and historic Canada.

Canada shares so much of our “American” History, most often on our side, but as you will see, sometimes siding with the British and earlier with the French.  But enough history background for now.  Here are some answers to questions that will help you have a much better understanding of our friends and neighbors to the north, the Canadians..........

- ANSWERS   -  To Your  Canada  QUESTIONS -

- Customs and Immigration -

You MUST possess a current Passport.   and possibly a VISA if your Passport is from a country other than the USA

International law requires you to have “Proof of Citizenship”  For citizens of most other countries Canada requires a valid Passport.  For re-entry into the United States, you need a Passport.  Aliens must have an Alien Registration “Green Card”, student visa, etc., depending on which country you are from.

Crossing the border in both directions, a Federal Border, Immigration or Customs official will get on the coach and ask questions, or passengers may be required to get off the coach and enter the office.  Keep you answers short and simple.  Just answer the question.  If you get complicated or cute, it may delay your coach.  If you are not a US Citizen, be sure to tell your Group Leader in advance. Aliens may be required to get off the coach to register in person.

- Everything is Metric -

Everything !  Speed Limits, Distances, Temperature, Barometric Pressure, Wind Speeds, everything.  Relax, you will  get used to it, sort of.  It is quite easy.   It is much simpler than the US system.  In fact, almost all nations of the world have switched to metric for its simplicity.  The US was supposed to change in the 1960s and ‘70s, but we quit when we were just part way.  That is why we have “litres” for soda bottles and alcohol, and 100 millimeter cigarettes.  European and Japanese cars are all metric.

PS.  Please remember, the plural for more than one ...               Canada Goose is “ Canada Geese ”

- Everything you wanted to know about Canada (almost ). CNaCa    2/2  1308

Canadian monetary system is very similar to that of the United States, except they do not have $1 or $2 bills. Their coins are the same denomination and size except:  One Dollar Coins (called a “Loonie”) instead of our One Dollar Bills and Two Dollar Coins (called a “Toonie”) instead of our (rare) two-dollar bills.  Bills are in color! The Canadian Dollar is a small bargain since you receive about $1.30 Canadian for every $1 US.  To receive the best exchange rate, you may purchase items with a credit or debit card.  You can use an ATM machine for Canadian cash, but there is a service charge.  Do not expect to get change in US dollars.  You can spend any Canadian dollars left at the Duty Free Shop or often exchange Canadian money for U.S. at the Canadian Duty Free Shop at the border just before you enter the USA.

- Price of Things -

Everything is less expensive in Canada.  Not only are their prices generally lower, but remember the US Dollar is worth about $1.30+ Canadian so you get more Canadian Dollars for your US Dollar. Subject to currency exchange rate.

- NOTE:  Stores:   Prices are generally lower than in the US.          Remember, the Canadian dollar is worth only about                                  $.75  v US so your American dollar goes                                        further.  Use your Credit/Debit  or ATM                                          Card for best rates.

- Postage Stamps -

Check with yourTour Director or Canadian Post Office or Store  $1.20 Cent Canadian Postage Stamps are required for Postcards and Letters.    Post Boxes are RED (Mail Boxes).  United States postage stamps  are NOT acceptable

Canadians are a very proud people and country. They fly                        their flags everywhere.

The Canadian Flag is Red and White with a Red Maple Leaf  in the center.

The Quebec Province Flag is Blue and White with 4 “fleur                                                                       de lys” in the corners.

- Language -

The Official languages of Canada is English and French , and French is spoken primarily in Quebec Province and New Brunswick Province.  In Montreal about 70% of the people are French speaking, and in Quebec City about 98% are French speaking.  Virtually everyone does understand English in major cities.  In Quebec Province, all signs are required to be in French only,  but most store and restaurant signs may be in both English and French.

Please be patient if someone doesn’t understand you.

“Merci” = Thank you. “S’il vous plait” = Please (“seel                              voo play”). Saying both is appreciated in every                                                           ... country in the world.

- ROAD SIGNS are all in French in Quebec, but all are international and easily understood.  You get used to them. Flashing green = “left turn permitted = a green arrow.   Traffic lights may have different shaped lights.

- MENUS   In QC (Province of Quebec), and in a few other regions, menus will be written in French, but will typically include English translations.

- Driving -

Most driving  rules are the same as in the US.   Speed limits in “Kilometers”  Hint:  100kph = 63 miles per hour.  Signs are standard “international” symbols. Quebec and Ontario Province have reciprocal agreements with New York State and Massachusetts so driving infraction in those provinces will go on your home state license including speeding,  red light, etc.

- Telephones -

Canada and the United States share the same phone systems so you can make a call from Canada to the USA by dialing your call the same as at home. US Phone Cards work: ATT, Sprint, Verizon, etc.  Telephone operators speak English and they can  place  your call,  but you will pay the MUCH higher operator assisted rate.

     - Yes, there is more, but this will really give you a good start.  Remember, Canada and the United States share North America, so we are all ... Americans .
