Recent tour reviews

This was one of my favorite shows I've ever been to. The opening act, Penny and Sparrow, was so lovely and funny. It's just two men and a guitar but they do so much. Josh Ritter put on one hell of a show. He filled the whole room with love, joy and tears. He is truly one of the most underappreciated artists of today. He is one of the best writers writing today.

He was the sweetest. Smiling most of the time and just so happy to be in Portland. Made me happy to be here too. Wish I could have gotten to meet him. They(the band) played well, it was a lovely night.

I really enjoyed the concert. Performance was great and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the opening bad. I was a little upset that it was very difficult to see the stage.

Josh Ritter Extends Headlining Tour, Showcasing New LP ‘Spectral Lines’

Josh Ritter Extends Headlining Tour, Showcasing New LP ‘Spectral Lines’

Renowned singer, songwriter, musician, artist, and best-selling author Josh Ritter has announced the continuation of his headlining tour this fall, featuring a series of newly confirmed shows across the United States. The upcoming shows, along with his currently ongoing spring tour, are a celebration of Ritter’s latest album, Spectral Lines , which was released last month via Thirty Tigers.

The fall tour will kick off on Sept. 29 at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas and make stops at prominent venues, including the Heights Theater in Houston, the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Los Angeles’ The Belasco, The Fillmore in San Francisco, and the Moore Theatre in Seattle, among others through Oct. 11. Ritter will be joined on stage by his esteemed band, The Royal City Band.

While currently embarked on his spring headline tour, Ritter has been captivating audiences with his live performances, including sold-out shows at Thalia Hall in Chicago, Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Lincoln Theatre in Washington, DC, House of Blues in Boston, and Beacon Theatre in New York.

Produced by his long-time collaborator Sam Kassirer (known for his work with Lake Street Dive and Langhorne Slim), Spectral Lines represents a departure from Ritter’s previous works, delving into a more atmospheric musical landscape. The album, dedicated to the memory of his mother, explores the most universal concepts of love, devotion, and connection—both with others and ourselves—across its ten seamless tracks.

Tickets for Ritter’s upcoming fall dates go on sale Friday, May 12, at 10:00 a.m. local time. Learn more and find tickets here .

Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band

“Josh Ritter remains at the top of his game two decades  into a highlight-strewn career. He’d be forgiven for  loosening his grip, but his hand has never felt surer.”

                                    - NPR Music

“Harking back to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and  maybe a little Mark Knopfler, Mr. Ritter has always been  a slinger of serious ideas and high-flown imagery.”

                                    - The New York Times

“Mysterious, melancholy, melodic…and those are only the M’s.”

                        — Stephen King in Entertainment Weekly

Renowned singer, songwriter, musician, artist and best-selling author Josh Ritter will release his anticipated new album, Spectral Lines, April 28 via Thirty Tigers.

One of today’s most thoughtful and prolific voices, Ritter has released ten studio albums including 2019’s widely acclaimed, Fever Breaks, of which NPR Music praised, “He remains a hydrant of ideas while embodying an endless capacity for empathy and indignation, often within a single song.”

In addition to his work as a musician, Ritter is also a national best-selling author, having released two novels to date: 2021’s The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All and 2011’s Bright’s Passage. Released to critical attention, Stephen King wrote in The New York Times Book Review that Bright’s Passage “shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime…This is the work of a gifted novelist.”

About the new album Spectral Lines (out 4/29):

Josh Ritter has been thinking a lot about space exploration. It has nothing to do with his spellbinding new album, Spectral Lines, except that in a way, it really does.

“The Voyager spacecraft went up in ’77 and now it’s out there in a place that no one’s ever been before, and it’s sending back all these messages,” Ritter says. “I feel like songs do that in their own little way. They’re probes: they go out into the world, and sometimes you hear stories back from them, but really, they go off on their own.”

Ritter, too, is sending back messages, in the form of 10 new songs that are atmospheric and impressionistic. Like the recently launched Webb Telescope, or Voyager all those years ago, he’s looking for signs of life, reaching for a sense of commonality, something that feels universal in this infinite universe. Spectral Lines, his 11th album, finds those shared experiences in songs that push beyond the bounds of Ritter’s previous work. Recorded with longtime collaborator Sam Kassirer producing, it’s an album full of wonder and light as Ritter considers the ideas of love, devotion and what it means to be connected, to each other and to ourselves.

Josh Ritter confirms fall headline tour

Article contributed by sacks and company | published on tuesday, may 9, 2023.

josh ritter tour

Renowned singer, songwriter, musician, artist and best-selling author Josh Ritter will continue his headline tour this fall with newly confirmed shows at Dallas’ Longhorn Ballroom, Houston’s Heights Theater, Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Los Angeles’ The Belasco, San Francisco’s The Fillmore and Seattle’s Moore Theatre among others. Ritter will be joined on the road by his longtime band, The Royal City Band. Tickets for the new dates go on-sale this Friday, May 12 at 10:00am local time. Full details can be found at www.joshritter.com/tour .

Additionally, Ritter is currently in the midst of his spring headline tour, which includes shows this month at Chicago’s Thalia Hall (sold out), Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, Washington, DC’s Lincoln Theatre, Boston’s House of Blues and New York’s Beacon Theatre. See below for complete tour itinerary.

The upcoming performances celebrate Ritter’s new album, Spectral Lines , which was released last month to critical acclaim via Thirty Tigers (stream/purchase here ). Produced by his longtime collaborator Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Langhorne Slim), Spectral Lines finds Ritter expanding beyond the bounds of his previous work to create a record both atmospheric and profound. Dedicated to the memory of his mother, Ritter searches for commonality across these ten seamless tracks by exploring life’s most universal ideas—love, devotion and what it means to be connected, to both each other and to ourselves.

Critical acclaim for Spectral Lines : “one of the most perceptive artists making music today…with Spectral Lines, Josh Ritter continues to blur the boundary between melody and mystique”—American Songwriter “Josh Ritter is like a more open-hearted version of Leonard Cohen. His lyrics draw on the divine but he seems to see a little heaven in all the people around him”—Paste “Spectral Lines stands as a heady revelation”—PopMatters “a hopeful tapestry that encourages listeners to sit with each other in introspection, but not to forget to sing along”—No Depression “His most adventurous album yet”—The Irish Times “Richly atmospheric, sonically adventurous”—The Sun “a thought-provoking sonic realm. Full of relaxing space and translucent melodies, Ritter seeks the profound in simple elements”—Nashville Lifestyles “It stands well apart from any of his previous works...a symphony with subtle treasures, both musically and lyrically, within the movements”—Glide “a powerful but quiet, highly-atmospheric set of songs; a set focused on life’s most difficult questions”—Americana Highways “Primarily, this is an album that exalts the power of shared human experiences”—Hot Press “The album never shies away from pain, from demanding tears to finding love to be an unwelcome sacrifice, but it also never fails to face it”—Spectrum Culture “The melodic first track is driven by hopeful spoken-word lyrics that ultimately yield to Ritter’s signature vocals”—Cool Hunting

Adding to an already notable year, Bob Dylan performed Ritter’s song, “Only A River,” last month while on tour in Japan. The song was originally recorded by Bob Weir for his acclaimed 2016 solo album, Blue Mountain. Of the cover, Ritter shares, “I am speechless. I wrote the song in the stairwell of my dorm in college, 25 years ago. Music is a blessed traveler.”

One of today’s most thoughtful and prolific voices, Ritter has released ten studio albums to date including 2019’s widely acclaimed, Fever Breaks , of which NPR Music praised, “He remains a hydrant of ideas while embodying an endless capacity for empathy and indignation, often within a single song.” In addition to his work as a musician, Ritter is also a national best-selling author, having released two novels to date: 2011’s Bright’s Passage and 2021’s The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All , for which the film rights have recently been optioned for development. Released to critical attention, Stephen King wrote in The New York Times Book Review that Bright’s Passage “shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime…This is the work of a gifted novelist.”

In addition to Ritter (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar) and Kassirer (piano, organ, mellotron, synthesizers, drums), Spectral Lines also features Jocie Adams (clarinet, synthesizers, background vocals), Matt Douglas (woodwinds), Zachariah Hickman (upright bass, electric bass), Rich Hinman (electric guitar, pedal steel), Shane Leonard (drums, percussion, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass), Kevin O’Connell (drums, percussion, electric bass, electric guitar) and Dietrich Strause (acoustic guitar, electric guitar).

Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band – Performing the Album ‘Hello Starling’

Josh and band will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Josh’s 2003 breakthrough record,  Hello Starling , with a very limited North America headline tour, playing the album in full (plus more music). This follows a sold out European autumn tour celebrating the album.

A note from Josh:

“When I wrote Hello Starling, I was playing coffee shops and open mics. By the time it came out, I was on tour with the Frames and Joan Baez. I was practically living on the road, hearing my songs on the radio for the first time, staying up all night, touring North America & Europe with my band, doing all these things I had only dreamt of. It was a grand time.

For the 20th anniversary of the album, the band and I will be taking a swing through Hello Starling this February. We’ll play the entire album in full, front to back, and then play a bunch more music.

Thank you all for listening all these years!

Love, Josh”
