Anthrax’s Joey Belladonna Forms Journey Tribute Band ‘Journey Beyond’

It's no secret that Anthrax singer Joey Belladonna is a Journey fan. He's been spotted singing some of the band's hits at jam nights and  open-mic nights , and now it's all come together with Journey Beyond — Belladonna's official Journey tribute group.

Last summer, Belladonna's covers act Chief Big Way toured heavily and played some other scattered shows until the end of the year. Now, Journey Beyond are prepping for their first-ever show, which will be in Hopeville, Va. at the Beacon Theatre on March 6.

Announcing the news on social media , Belladonna wrote, "I am happy to announce the debut of Journey Beyond, a tribute to the legendary band Journey. It is my pleasure to welcome my new band out of Nashville and we are very excited to hit the stage together."

"We are excited to be performing a night of Journey’s timeless hits," the singer said of the upcoming gig, "and we look forward to seeing some new fans in the crowd!"

On the home front, Anthrax began writing their new record at the beginning of last year, which will serve as the follow-up to 2016's  For All Kings.

A Journey tribute featuring Central New York native Joey Belladonna of Anthrax is set to take the stage in Central New York in March.

Beyond Frontiers, the new project fronted by Belladonna will entertain audiences inside the Turning Stone Casino's Showroom on Sunday, March 24th at 7pm:

Beyond Frontiers featuring 6-time Grammy nominated Joey Belladonna promises to captivate Journey fans and music enthusiasts on Sunday, March 24 at 7pm in The Showroom! This unparalleled tribute delivers captivating vocals from Belladonna, lead singer of Anthrax, and passionate performances that “Faithfully” recreate the iconic anthems and power ballads of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

JOEY BELLADONNA

Belladonna, who grew up in the Upstate New York town of Oswego, is best known from his time in the legendary thrash metal band Anthrax, serving as their lead vocalist from 1984 to 1992. Anthrax shuffled their lineup in the '90s and early 2000s, but Belladonna officially rejoined in 2010 where he's contributed to the band's continued success, earning several Grammy nominations.

According to Wikipedia, Metal Forces magazine named him the top metal singer for two years in a row.

Belladonna recently popped up at a Syracuse Crunch game, kicking off the action with a powerful rendition of the National Anthem. Watch the video of his impressive performance from December 2023 here:

Anthrax's Joey Belladonna Talks Journey Tribute 'Beyond Frontiers' Anthrax Rap & Bands Early Years

Canada 's The Metal Voice recently spoke to Anthrax's singer Joey Belladonna as well as his wife and partner Krista Belladonna . Joey Belladonna spoke about his Journey tribute band 'Beyond Frontiers' as well as some key historic moments in Anthrax over the years. Plus we did into the couples relationship

When asked about his Journey tribute band

"Great tight band, those guys love doing it too so it helps when you get people that are really into it. It's just part of what I like to do. It looks like I'm trying to do something while everybody's doing stuff (In Anthrax) but no I just want to keep doing it. I don't plan to just do it for the heck of it, we have shows coming up in fact in March. The book is open basically and whatever comes up we're just we're ready to take on. I want it to grow, I want it to be a normal thing for everyone. "

When asked if he would consider doing other tributes, like Dio?

"We'll put it together too, we're not ready to get into that just yet. "

When asked about Jeff Beck passing

"Jeff Beck passed away and all that kind of music was such a big influence on me. "

When asked about the early days with Anthrax, when he auditioned

"I knew nothing about them (Anthrax), nothing about that music and it worked out great. Obviously I was a little intimidated to join because I didn't even know if the music was really my style but I saw through it enough. It (Audition) was like let's get the mic set up, if you want to warm up, let's get some levels on your mic. I said the hell with it I'm gonna just bust out some shit. I just did some Journey stuff. I don't even remember, I think Lights maybe or oh Sherry little bits of pieces of stuff I don't think I did whole Tunes but then at that point they're like okay now this isn't what we expected."

When touching upon the times he was let go from Anthrax and then brought back to the band

"I continue to be as humble as possible and move forward, which that's we all want to do. Some people are like what are you nuts? You've been in relationships, it's kind of the same idea, I mean you can either be on the same page or you can be a little deviant and send it off course and expect a lot more from someone that you're not doing your part. And what are the reasons? There's a lot to it too. Sometimes there's just no reason for and what do you get from it? And then you got to backtrack and then you gotta pick it up, again twice. I mean I'm happy for the fans, I just think people need to see it the way it was. There was nothing wrong with it, in my eyes. I think everything we were doing even to the last minute before I was gone, Persistence (In Time Album) was great stuff. "

When asked his opinion on when Anthrax first started integrating rap into their songs, 'I'm the Man' and 'Bring the noise'

"I had no clue what was going on. I remember walking in the room and there was kind of a heated moment about certain things about that and when I heard them working on it I thought I walked into the wrong room. I honestly did, I had no idea what was going on. I mean obviously these things move and they go and they they do whatever they need to do and I'm I'm happy to be a part of all of it. I had the experience and it has been great. I love playing drums on some of the stuff and as I love jamming with Public Enemy. I love listening to their stories about how they come together and play. It's super cool and you can't you can't deny the fans having so much fun with that stuff. "

When asked if he felt out of place on the Bring the noise video with Anthrax/Public Enemy

"Just don't give me something I can do, I'm not going to stand around and get some drinks while everybody's shooting a video, give me some turntables."

Anthrax’s Joey Belladonna Is Ready to Sing for Journey If Asked

Anthrax frontman Joey Belladonna said he’s up for the “challenge” if Journey is looking for a new singer. The metal singer, who plays some shows with his Journey tribute band, Beyond Frontiers, said he would jump at the opportunity if asked.

“Many times I’ve done the crew soundcheck, and I’ve spent many days with the band overall,” said Belladonna . “I don’t even wanna go into it, but we did a lot of stuff together here and there on shows that they did over the years, so, and I know ’em and I’ve been in touch with Deen Castronovo, current Journey drummer, a lot.”

He added, “You know, I would definitely be really interested in doing that. That would be great. Not that I think that that’s gonna happen, but, yeah, it would be great. I’d love that challenge.”

Singer Arnel Pineda has been the frontman of Journey since 2007 and has recorded four albums with the band from their 2008 release, Revelation , through Freedom in 2022. Perry left the band in 1998, and Steve Augeri fronted the band for nearly a decade before Pineda joined.

Belladonna, whose Beyond Frontiers band features guitarist Matt Basford, bassist Paul Arntz, keyboardist Doug Carter, and drummer Justin Ward, has been singing Journey songs for years. He was a fan of the band long before Steve Perry joined.

Journey’s first three albums, from their self-titled debut in 1975 through Next in 1977, featured Greg Rolie on lead vocals.

“I’ve always liked the music so much,” said Belladonna. “I’ve owned all the music. I liked Journey long before Steve Perry even came. I have all those records, so I was really into the band a lot. But of course, when Steve came along, I was down with singing that live somewhere. And I just put it together and said I wanted to do a whole night of it. I just thought it would be fun, and it looked like a blast. And we do have a blast doing it.”

Top 10 Best-Selling Manga Launched This Decade Revealed in Spring 2024 Update

The list of best-selling manga titles to have launched this decade has been updated, reflecting the newest Spring 2024 numbers. It was revealed that Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is the best-selling manga to have launched since 2020.

X (formerly Twitter) user Skyzaid compiled the figures for the manga series with the highest cumulative copies in circulation, revealing that Frieren: Beyond Journey's End tops the list at #1 with 20 million copies. Close behind is Oshi no Ko at #2 with 16.5 million. Kaiju No. 8 rounds out the top 3 with 13 million. The ranking and full infographic can be seen below.

Anime Adaptations Massively Boost the Sales of Original Manga

Chiikawa was unfortunate to miss out with around 2.7 million copies in circulation, further highlighting how crucial anime adaptations are to a series' sales -- Frieren , Oshi no Ko , Mashle and Shangri-la Frontier have all released anime series in recent months. Oshi no Ko also recently revealed the pre-screening dates for Season 2 . Meanwhile, despite Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray not yet receiving an anime, multiple anime adaptations set within the same universe have been launched in recent years. Kaiju No. 8 currently streams as part of Crunchyroll's Spring 2024 lineup , while Blue Box and Dandadan will receive anime adaptations later this year .

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Has Seem Manga Sales Double Since the Anime's Debut

The success of the Frieren anime saw the franchise's popularity skyrocket, with manga sales doubling from 10 million to 20 million. The series seized the #1 spot on MyAnimeList , which has over 95% user base outside of Japan. It's worth highlighting that many of the above titles are licensed by VIZ Media, whose dominance over the manga market was again highlighted in a report on the best-selling manga of 2023 in the U.S . VIZ Media accounted for 57% of the top 750 best-selling manga of 2023, and it licenses six of the top 10 titles seen above.

ANTHRAX singer Joey Belladonna 's JOURNEY tribute band called BEYOND FRONTIERS (formerly JOEY BELLADONNA'S BEYOND THE BAND and JOURNEY BEYOND ) performed last night (Wednesday, December 28) at Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts. Video of the concert can be seen below.

A year and a half ago, Belladonna spoke to "The Johnny Dare Morning Show" about his JOURNEY tribute, which also features keyboardist Doug Carter , bassist Paul Arntz , guitarist Matt Basford and drummer Justin Ward .

"We're working on some recordings so we can be like a normal band and put stuff up on the site — maybe do a video," Joey said. "We've got interest in playing shows. We're just trying to figure out when and how, that kind of thing. The band's still together. We record at home. Everybody's all in different places at the moment. We only did one show, so we can't wait to do it again, 'cause it's gonna be fun."

Belladonna also touched upon his reasons for launching a JOURNEY tribute band, saying: "People ask why the hell I do it. I just like the songs. I've liked the band forever. And I just wanted to do it because I think it's a cool challenge and it's just fun music. I can't think of many bands that I'd like to do a whole evening of without trying to dress up and do everything they do. We just wanna be a band that plays that music. I don't care about the whole lookalike-type stuff. It's just about music. That's really all it is."

In an April 2020 interview with SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" , Belladonna stated about his approach to singing material that was originally written and recorded by Steve Perry : "Obviously, when you do [something like this], there's always open ground for [people to say], 'You didn't do that part, 'You didn't do this.' [But] I didn't wanna copy it note for note. Sometimes I just like to do my own thing with it. Represent it and do what you can, but I love to mess around with things. Not so much to try to be too different, but just make it cool and do it your own way versus trying to get every note. I'm sure some guys study every second of it. Even with ANTHRAX , I do songs different a lot of times. It's just fun that way. To do things off the cuff is fun for me versus trying to follow everything… I can study it all day, but I just don't feel like doing that. I wanna have a little fun doing my own thing with it."

Belladonna 's JOURNEY tribute made its live debut in March 2020 at The Beacon Theatre in Hopewell, Virginia.

When he is not busy touring and recording with ANTHRAX , Belladonna has been spending time playing drums and singing for a classic-rock covers band called CHIEF BIG WAY . The upstate New York-based group, which also features Dave Mickelson on bass, Joe Precourt on guitar and John Goodwin on keyboards, plays versions of songs from JOURNEY , AC/DC , ZZ TOP , BOSTON , CHEAP TRICK , FOREIGNER , PINK FLOYD , VAN HALEN , COLLECTIVE SOUL , THE WHO , THE DOORS , SHINEDOWN and BON JOVI , among others.

In a 2005 interview with MusicDish , Belladonna was asked about the rumor that he came to the table with a JOURNEY tune during his 1985 audition for ANTHRAX . "Actually, what happened was I went into the room and they said, 'Just go on in,' and they hadn't heard me sing," he said. "They'd heard of me and they asked me to come in, but we were going in to start tracking and stuff, to get the mic set up and all that and they said, 'Let's get you in there and get you warmed up.' I hit the mic and belted out some JOURNEY … I think it was [the song] 'Lights' . I didn't know what the hell I was getting into in the first place. I just wanted to lay some vocals or something. Just to kinda give an idea and that's what happened. It wasn't really anything more than that. I just kinda belched it out. I think I did 'Oh Sherrie' [written by Steve Perry ], too, or something. I dunno why, but I just did. It was something off the top of my head I could do a cappella and it was kinda challenging. I thought maybe in range or something that would be kind of intriguing. It was definitely one they weren't expecting."

ANTHRAX 's 2013 EP "Anthems" EP included the band's cover version of JOURNEY 's "Keep On Runnin'" alongside classics by RUSH , THIN LIZZY , AC/DC , CHEAP TRICK and BOSTON .

Aerosmith is going back on tour.

The iconic rock group — originally made up of Steven Tyler ,  Joe Perry , Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer —  has been on the scene since 1970 , linking up in Boston and going on to worldwide fame.

And though many of today's fans know them thanks to Tyler's own star power (or maybe the movie Armageddon ), the band has been making major headlines since those early days.
