Saiyuki: Journey West

  • View history

Saiyuki: Journey West is a PlayStation strategy RPG adaption of the Chinese novel, Journey to the West . The Japanese name is Saiyuki (西遊記) which is the Japanese pronunciation of the novel's title. The character designer is Akihiro Yamada .

Due to the open gender of Xuanzang commonly found in Japanese translations of the original novel, the hero can either be male or female. Choosing to play as either gender does not change the overall story, though causes minor alterations to the dialogue.

Genjo, a 16-year-old monk raised in Gold Temple, dreams of Lady Kannon bestowing a staff to him. She is appointed as the temple's representative and takes on the monk's name, Sanzo. Along the way, she frees Goku from a boulder prison and guards the staff.

Gameplay [ ]

Overview [ ].

Saiyuki: Journey West is a game similar to Fu-Qi's Fengshen Yanyi , with a 3D isometric map and animated 2D sprites. Players choose their destination and battle on a 3D isometric map. Treasure boxes offer items and interact with the environment. However, the ability to shape the land has been removed, replacing it with new features.

Elemental Attributes [ ]

Each character has one assigned element. This attribute determines the strengths and weaknesses for the individual, as well as their proficiency with spells of a particular elemental attribute for spells and other abilities. The five elements are Fire, Wood (Life in game), Metal (Gold in game), Earth (Dirt in game) and Water. Taking advantage of an element's weakness can increase or decrease the damage a party member can deal, and may additionally award more experience for each character. The following lists the element chain present in the game.

  • Dirt defeats Water;
  • Water defeats Fire;
  • Fire defeats Gold;
  • Gold defeats Life;
  • Life defeats Dirt.

Wereform and Guardians [ ]

Sanzo, a party member, can shapeshift into a Wereform, a massive beastial form. The Wereform's duration is determined by the Were Gauge's length. Players can level up the Were Gauge to increase its size and unlock more powerful abilities. Wereform attacks can reveal hidden treasures and new paths, while transformed characters gain life points and immunity to negative status effects. Sanzo can summon Guardians, each with unique abilities, which last for three turns.

  • Mother - Life element, can attack in a two square radius; restores party HP per turn;
  • Warrior - Gold element, can attack in a two square radius; increases physical defense;
  • Fool - Fire element, has a linear attack; increases physical offense;
  • Luna - Dirt element, attacks with a bow's range; restores party MP per turn (except for Sanzo's);
  • Cavalier - Water element, hits in a one square area near Sanzo; increases movement and allows Sanzo to float;
  • Emperor - No element, attacks in a three square radius from Sanzo; grants the passive effects from all the other Guardians.

Towns and Equipment [ ]

Towns offer stores, chemists, and training sessions for equipment and spells. Players can improve weapons by visiting blacksmiths in certain towns, except for Sanzo, who can only acquire Guardians. Posts in larger cities provide part-time jobs and monetary awards, with side-quests involving fighting. Posts also offer a card mini-game, where players can buy medals and exchange them for unique prizes.

Extras and Localization differences [ ]

Game extras include Sanzo's diary and bonus section. Japanese version has limited audio clips, staff roll movie, and voice omission in English.

Characters [ ]

Main party [ ], optional party members [ ].

Divinity Chronicles: Journey To The West review - "A Monkey-ful experience that did not go South"

Divinity Chronicles: Journey To The West review - "A Monkey-ful experience that did not go South"

Devotees of antiquities would immediately have the bell in their head rung at the mention of Journey to the West as a deeply complex and virtuous tale that stands head to toe to some of the world’s oldest classics such as Homer’s Illiad. It bears a significant cornerstone to the Chinese civilisation ever since its conception and has gone on to garner a worldwide appeal and fanfare. Time and again, this timeless masterpiece made its global footprint at the forefront of cultural exchange and starred as a trademark icon in many facets of entertainment, be it movies or video games.

The Monkey King had its fair share of appearances across titles regardless of prestige and size. Cut the long-winded nag, to add to the never-ending pile of games based on the literature, comes Journey to the West - a Kickstarter indie goodie packaged neatly in a deckbuilding box and is the brainchild of Zhan Yu (Z Studio), available exclusively on the App Store and Steam.

A deckbuilding adventure awaits

Heck, if you got the luck of the draw, you can call upon them in mid-battle and make use of their cards with varying effects such as healing, or have them act as your personal damage sponge. In your arsenal, you can harness extra quirks through consumables or relics.

With that said, Z Studio got the core formula of team-building games right, even with just one character (minus the generic allies alongside you). You are treading on deep water when it comes to strategic planning with the many cards at play, each with its rarity that scales with energy cost. Feeling ballsy? Just go ham by stacking your buffs and see big red numbers as well as carcasses of your foes.

  • Roundguard review - "Bouncing into roguelike randomness"

The premise of the story remains faithful to the lore. To rewind, you play as the Monkey King - heaven's primary troublemaker and free-to-play players' sole unlocked character - who whips up a storm of mischief in the kingdom until subjugation comes literally at the hands of Buddha. One fateful day, the Goddess of Mercy descends and awards you a "get out of jail" ticket for dealing with an insidious monster outbreak heralded by the Devil King. Now it is up to you to clear the streets of stalking apparitions with the MonkeyBar.

Hilarity can ensue as story dialogue leave a lot to be desired and come packed with that signature jank commonly produced by machine translations. Despite this, it did not fail to portray the extreme duality of the hominid King’s personality: courteous and formal on one face, while gung-ho and haughty when his alter-ego switch is flipped.

Saiyuki: Journey West

You could believe Yasumi Matsuno and his team had put this together if not for the Koei logo up front. While genuinely easier than either FFT or its cousin series Tactics Ogre, it's a highly competent take on the genre.

Hail fair wanderer! Step into the world of Chinese mythology, as brought to you by Japan. Saiyuki is based off the mid-16th century Ming novel Journey to the West , originally a folk story in which four companions (a monk and his three demihuman wards) must travel to India to retrieve the core Buddhist scriptures or Tripitaka in order to furnish China with a better understanding of its tenets. Being a Koei joint marketed to a teenage audience, Saiyuki is necessarily a fusion of classical and modern aesthetics, with embellishments from other myths such as the  Fengshen Yangyi , known to English speakers as Investiture of the Gods .

The game will immediately remind players of Final Fantasy Tactics , the seminal strategy RPG that has given isometric tactical games a place of high esteem amongst PlayStation aficionados. You control a party of 4-6 members and move your 2D sprites around a 3D landscape (viewed from three-quarters overhead) divided into squares. If you haven’t played a strategy RPG of this kind before, think of it like an advanced form of chess. This is by no means Koei’s first rodeo when it comes to tactical games (they practically invented the simulation style with their Romance of the Three Kingdoms series), but it’s refreshingly different from their typical fare. Character-centric and based around small engagements, it may not be what a Koei traditionalist is looking for with their penchant for sprawling imperial politics and field mechanics, but for me it’s a much more consumable experience.

Saiyuki is a delayed North American release, coming out three years after its 1999 Japanese debut. As a result, it has some visual artifacts from a much earlier period of PlayStation development. Although the sprites are nice, the animated cutscenes and artwork fantastic, and the overall aesthetic quite well executed, you’ll notice visual oddities that were common during early PlayStation games, but have long since been solved for such as blockiness in sprite scaling and warped textures on 3D objects. The blockiness is especially noticible with the “wereform” transformations of your party, where they Hulk out into giant monster versions of themselves. It’s no worse than what one would find in Xenogears or Vandal Hearts, but it can be a bit of a sore note amidst the otherwise gorgeous sprite work. Portraits (and the game’s key artwork in general) is the work of Akihiro Yamada, who Front Mission fans will recognize for his contributions to that series.

Saiyuki: Journey West - Box Art

Box Art of Saiyuki: Journey West

Despite the small annoyances, most players will probably enjoy Saiyuki’s look. The best parts, like with most PlayStation RPGs, are in the introduction and cutscenes. The animation is full of vibrant colour and motion, with a style reminiscent of other mid-to-late 90s properties like Yu Yu Hakusho , Hoshin Engi (also based on Chinese myth!), and Fushigi Yuugi . It has some high-quality production value, detailed and fluidly animated, and is something I’d genuinely like to see as a TV series or OVA.

The spell effects are one of the places the game’s visuals sag a bit. There’s a variety of excellent pieces here, with beautiful transparencies and lovingly detailed artwork for the summons, but others like standard spells can quite bland and repetitive. If you’re like me and don’t want to sit through the full casting sequence every time, you can turn them off via the options or choose to view them only on first casting and never again afterward. It’s a kindness the Final Fantasy franchise still hasn’t granted us as of this writing.

Most of the music is extremely well done, capturing the traditional feel of ancient Chinese myths and high adventure. There is, however, one glaring exception to this, and that’s the North American intro piece. While Japan got an inspiration power ballad that complements the animation, North American audiences got “Magic SonGoku” repeated over, and over, and over . It’s not even the same song, compositionally, and the decision is just mind-boggling considering the song is actually in Japanese.

Otherwise the musical score does well, ranging from upbeat battle themes to romantic and leisurely scene pieces, mixing modern and classical instruments to enhance the game’s aesthetic. It’s rounded out with effects audio that I would describe as “generally competent”, with satisfying effects from weapon blows and spell effects, though the Wereform sequences can be grating due to prolonged noises in a high pitch. It’s one more reason to turn them off.

The game’s engine looks surprisingly similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. You could believe Yasumi Matsuno and his team had put this together if not for the Koei logo up front. While genuinely easier than either FFT or its cousin series Tactics Ogre , it’s a highly competent take on the genre. It uses similar camera controls, movement patterns, and modes of engagement, with a few of its own ideas thrown in for good measure. As I’ve mentioned previously, “wereform” transformations are a key special power of most of your party members, but so are Guardian summons that grant Sanzo their abilities, becoming temporary assets across a few rounds of battle. It also features an elemental countering system based on the five traditional elements of China: Earth, Water, Fire, Metal, and Wood (here called “Nature”). Earth defeats Water, Water defeats Fire, Fire defeats Metal, Metal defeats Nature, Nature defeats Earth. Keeping this in mind is key when setting up for elemental attacks, as you can either take advantage of an enemy’s weakness or fall victim to a spell in your blind spot.

In a move that’s surprising (and welcome!), Saiyuki lets you choose between being a male or female version of the main character at the beginning of the game. Said character is the semi-historical figure Sanzo Genjo. The swap doesn’t affect much of anything beyond your portrait and how other characters refer to you, but in a market where games rarely let you choose anything about your protagonists — even the silent ones — it’s a nice touch.

The game follows the general plot of Journey to the West with deviations as appropriate. You take control of Sanzo and their companions, starting with the traditional figures of Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai — the Monkey, Ogre, and Pig. In the original novel they symbolize Sanzo’s three major assets, the mind, emotions, and body, and Sanzo must teach them to work in harmony to complete his mission. Here, Saiyuki brings in more cast members and eschews the greater philosophical message, but what it lacks in direct meaning, it makes up for in fun character interactions. You’ll run into river dragons, fight transforming demon hordes, and challenge a bevy of supernatural beings drawn from across Chinese, Indian,  and Japanese mythology. Persona and Shin Megami Tensei fans will probably get a kick out of the various bosses drawn from Indian mythology, and some of the Asiatic horror visuals that accompany them. It’s an entertaining time throughout, even if it never quite hits any philosophical depths or big themes.

Overall, it’s easy to recommend Saiyuki: Journey West. Despite the hilariously bad intro music and a bit of age showing in the graphics, it’s a smooth play with a less-typical story to enjoy.

A fun adventure with lovable characters and an engaging battle system. Fantastic animation in the cutscenes and slick artwork throughout.

A terribad intro song and some poorly-aging graphical flaws. Not the most challenging playthrough.

Bottom Line

A solid SRPG for people who want more Final Fantasy Tactics in their lives. Very appealing for fans of Journey to the West and other forms of Chinese mythology.

Critical Reception

Game Informer gave the review scores of 8.5 and 8.75 out of ten. Andrew Reiner wrote, "Final Fantasy Tactics is the most impressive turn-based strategy console game. Square Soft hasn't delivered a sequel yet, but that doesn't mean that another development house can't do it for them. Saiyuki is in many ways an offshoot of tactics. The combat structuring and look of the game are unmistakable, and instead of a class system Koei has implemented character transformations called Werechanges. Interestingly, the Were receive their own experience and level-ups separately from the characters they spawn from. Different strategies must be used to overcome the perils that lie within the varied landscapes and mission objectives. I invested wwll over 300 hours into tacticvs, and the plethora of sidequests should keep mehooked to this worthy impersonator for just as long".

Jay Fitzloff, who gave the lower score, added, "...Unlike comparable titles, however, Saiyuki's between battle story is quite compelling. Which isn't to say that the combat is poor, int fact, it's fabulous".

The Best Video Games Based On Classic Literature

  • Many video games draw inspiration from books, not just movies and TV shows. Classic literature can provide rich material for game developers to adapt and create new narratives.
  • The Lord of the Rings Online stands out as a game that directly takes inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, allowing players to participate in the War of the Ring and explore the rich world of Middle-Earth.
  • Castlevania is a game series that adapts Bram Stoker's Dracula in a selective way, focusing on the iconic villain and his Transylvanian castle while introducing new characters and elements from other horror stories.

Many video games take their cues from movies and TV shows. It's not surprising given they're all visual mediums. Developers and artists simply have an easier time translating something that they can see. That said, books can be an equally fruitful source of material.

RELATED: Best Lesser Known Sci-Fi Books To Read During The Holidays

That's why classic literature has inspired several of gaming's greats . The titles are sometimes direct adaptations of the novels, letting players tackle the books' iconic events in different ways. More often than not, however, the developers pick and choose aspects to adapt. They then fashion these facets into a new work to capture audiences both new and old. Both approaches can succeed in the right hands, and these games prove that.

J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and other Middle-earth novels are among the greatest literary works of all time. The world of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and other creatures is so rich in detail, history, and culture that fans could swear it was real. At the center of it all, however, are poignant tales of humble heroes triumphing over evil and power corrupting the noblest individuals. These traits are a reliable guide for any narrative. It's partially why so many LOTR games exist, even if most of them use the aesthetic of Peter Jackson's movies.

On the other hand, The Lord of the Rings Online takes inspiration directly from the books. This MMORPG makes players a pivotal part of the War of the Ring. Their deeds have a tremendous impact on events in the mainline trilogy, both on the frontlines and behind the scenes. That's because the narrative tackles the northern conflict and other plot threads described in supplementary works . This material provides hundreds of hours of content as players partake in quests and activities of all stripes.

What's more, these storylines unfold within iconic locales beautifully brought to life. LOTRO truly lets fans live in Middle-Earth.

One of the great faces of horror is Count Dracula. In Bram Stoker's novel, the vampire terrorizes Victorian London, drinking the blood of innocents and corrupting others into his soulless servants. All of it is to slake his constant thirst and desire for conquest. As effective as he is, the villain transcends the source material and appears in several works outside his original book.

One of these is Castlevania . This action platformer series sees players try to vanquish the evil count in his home. The gothic castles and other haunted settings make for eye-popping level design, and it's always fun to slay classic horror monsters with a trusty whip. Despite these strengths, loyalists may take issue with some of these games .

RELATED: Movies Every Dracula Fan Should Watch

Castlevania is selective in how it adapts Bram Stoker's book. Dracula is the overarching villain, and his castle still lies in Transylvania. Yet instead of using Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray as protagonists, the narratives follow the vampire-slaying Belmont clan.

That said, some series entries incorporate more elements of the source material than others. For instance, John Morris of Castlevania: Bloodlines is the son of the novel's Quincy Morris. The series has also included characters from other scary stories, such as the titular vampire from Carmilla and the monster from Frankenstein . For these reasons, Castlevania is more of a horror highlight reel than a direct translation.

The Witcher series is another rich fantasy realm, albeit one rife with racial strife and international conflict. The books, written by Andrzei Sapkowski, follow Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster slayer who desperately tries to maintain his neutrality. That aim becomes increasingly difficult amid moral and ethical dilemmas, and it's virtually impossible when these dilemmas threaten the people he cares about. While the books may not be decades old, they are highly regarded as some of the best examples of Polish literature of all time.

Fans feel that conflict in The Witcher games. These titles present complex plots involving ambitious power plays, crushing betrayals, and inner turmoil. They technically take place after the books, but they maintain many of the same characters. In addition, they carry similar themes about the price of neutrality and choosing the lesser evil .

RELATED: Novel-Based Fantasy Worlds Ripe For MMOs

It all culminates in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . This is a sprawling sandbox encompassing more of Sapkowski's world than ever before. The game has countless quests to complete, and these are all engaging in how they respect the novels' cynical messages and moral ambiguity. More importantly, the title brings Geralt's journey to a satisfying conclusion by reuniting him with his surrogate family. In the end, he shapes a meaningful legacy beyond being just a Witcher.

One might expect this sci-fi title to have similar sci-fi roots, but Enslaved: Odyssey to the West actually takes inspiration from a classic Chinese folktale: Journey to the West . The classic story chronicles a Buddhist monk's pilgrimage to retrieve a set of sacred scrolls from India. He encounters various demons and other obstacles, and his only defenses are his companions--all inspired by animals like a monkey and a pig. The timeless tale has inspired numerous other stories in fiction.

It also forms the backbone of Enslaved . The game may lack a monk, but it does have Trip, a girl wishing to return to her faraway village. She receives reluctant aid from a couple of unscrupulous individuals: Monkey and Pigsy. In a nod to its Asian roots, the former sports a staff for both melee and ranged combat. It also facilitates some enjoyable (if derivative) platforming. The real attraction, though, is the story.

Enslaved evolves the narrative's themes of finding enlightenment, maturity, and redemption. These emerge not just through the compelling characters and their growing bond, but also via the concept of slavery. In an uncertain world, some people may prefer the solace and blissful ignorance of servitude. Who wants to "enlighten" themselves and face reality in an apocalypse ? The plot puts an unsettling twist on the usual quest for freedom, and it's a journey that not everyone would embark on.

Very little hype was given to this game leading up to its release, but Spec Ops: The Line quickly became an under-the-radar hit thanks to its hard-hitting narrative about the moral grayness and psychological depravity of warfare. A standard third-person military shooter on the surface, Spec Ops hid a much deeper game underneath.

What many don't know is that Spec Ops is based on the Joseph Conrad novella Heart of Darkness. The same story that inspired the classic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now, Spec Ops' Captain Walker is essentially a reversal of the novella's protagonist, Charles Marlow, with Walker becoming more akin to the novella's eventual antagonist, Kurtz (or Konrad in the game, a play on the name of the original author), by the game's conclusion.

The themes of civilian casualties, the trauma of war, and the flaws of the American war machine's presence abroad that made Apocalypse Now so affecting are all present in Spec Ops: The Line , and while the story is a bit less philosophical than its inspirations, those inspirations still shine through.

Just throwing this out there: Gen 4 - Sun Wukong as Fire/Fighting Infernape Gen 5 - Zhu Bajie as Fire/Fighting Pokabu. Future Gens: Sha Wujing as Water/Fighting Kappa starter. Xuanzang's dragon horse as ???/Fighting horse/naga/dragon hybrid.

is obsessed with Noivern!

...that would be awesome. But no, I don't think Xuanzang will be a part of it. He's not a fighting member of the team, after all. *edit* Wait, crap, what am I talking about? You mean Xuanzang's horse, right? And yes, a Dragon/Fighting type would be awesome. Also, what would Blaziken represent?

  • Thread starter

Oh, I meant Xuanzang's horse. The horse didn't have a name in the novel, or at least not one I could discern quickly. Blaziken is unrelated and just coincidental. Xuanzang could himself be made a Psychic Legendary or something when his four sidekicks are complete.

I thought something was up when you said that Xuanzang was the horse...
