Wailua River Sacred Falls Tour

Kauai Kayaking Tours

Paddle and Hike in the Wailua River Area

Sacred Falls new boardwalk!

The first quarter and the last quarter of the hiking trail have uneven surfaces with the challenges of muddy and slippery rocks, and crossing of streams. The new boardwalk covers about 70% of some of the most slippery and difficult parts of the trail.

*This five-hour guided tour is a wonderful waterfall adventure for the active family, combining idyllic paddling on the Wailua River and at times, depending on weather conditions,  a moderate to challenging hike to a remote bridal-veil waterfall.

The Wailua River became the center of activity for early Hawaiians and is known as one of Hawaii’s two most sacred places.

At night, it is said that one can still hear ancient drums thunder in concert with the nearby surf.

The trail leading to our sacred waterfall is a beautiful “greenhouse” where flowers, brooks and ferns abound. Swim by the waterfall.

The early Polynesian culture is represented here, steeped in a colorful past, rich with rock-wall terracing, legends and lore.

The setting for this jaunt is tranquil and tropical, the pace is unhurried. We delight in sharing the peaceful, pastoral existence of ancient Hawaii with you.

Bird watch for a night heron or coot.

Swim in the pools or stream leading from the falls (we don’t recommend swimming actually under Uluwehi waterfall due to falling rocks).

Come share the life and natural history of this mystical land and enjoy its great quiet with us!

When in doubt we don’t go out! At times the weather can conspire and conditions change and prevent us from safely reaching the falls e.g. not being able to safely cross the stream, and in those rare cases depending on progressed made, there may be a slight discount.

Leptospirosis

Since 1984 when we began celebrating the field and streams of Kaua’i we have not had a confirmed case of Leptospirosis. That said, know that you are taking a risk when plying our tropical rivers waters. Pregnant folks should, especially take heed.

CDC Leptospirosis Fact Sheet

Weight Limit Rule of Thumb

Our double kayaks can comfortably handle 500 pounds or less.

If participants surpass this weight limit we encourage a motor boat alternative.

At different times of the year the waterfall can be vary in volume from a trickle to impressive force.

The Secret is out!

When we first pioneered and began offering this tour to the public, a lot has changed. The main change is that the “Secret Falls” is today the best-known “secret” on the island. Nevertheless, we feel our guides will help you enjoy this tour for the paddle, serenity, and scenery you will stumble upon as you discover and share with many others, one of the best-kept known secrets of Kaua’i!

Embrace the Mud!

Trail can be muddy any time of the year make sure children and adults are up to the challenging potential of a slip and slide on the trail!

The trail can be hazardous for the ill-prepared and insist on clients availing themselves of our walking sticks.

This tour is doable by most people in average shape. If for any reason the paddle and/or hike portion is not accomplished by individuals, or if the weather does not allow e.g. stream crossing become dangerous,  there is no refund.

Description

The most popular kayak tour on Kauai ... journey up the Wailua River for an adventurous paddle, hike, and swim at Secret Falls. The Secret Falls Kayak Tour is offered by Kayak Kauai ... the island's premier kayak outfitter. They have the best equipment including tandem kayaks with rudders ... they have the best guides who are trained in water safety and paddling instruction ... they will ensure that your trip through the jungle is safe, fun and memorable!

The hike to Secret Falls is a relatively modest 30 minute stroll in dry conditions and there is minimal elevation gain. Following periods of rain the trail can be muddy and VERY slippery and it becomes more challenging. Children 6 and older are welcome on this tour, but parents should know their children and how they would do in potentially muddy conditions and exercise discretion. Older adults for whom slipping and falling in a mud puddle could cause an injury should also evaluate if this is the right tour option for them.

Secret Falls is an amazing place; one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hawaii to which you can hike. The kayaking portion of the trip just adds to the allure! This waterfall is so tall you'll find it difficult to fit the whole thing in one picture. And at the base of the falls is a wide, deep pool perfect for swimming.

Kevin at Falls

Most kayaking in Hawaii is done in the ocean, which at times can be rough and at other times can be downright dangerous. Kauai offers the unique opportunity to kayak NEAR the ocean on some jungle waterways. This makes for a safe, tranquil outing ... and an opportunity to absorb the sights, sounds, and smells of the rain forest from a unique perspective.

Never kayaked before? No worries ... it isn't difficult at all to get the hang of it. All the instruction that you need is provided. It doesn't take a tremendous amount of effort to paddle ... you'll be surprised at how easily you move through calm waters with very gentle strokes.

While children 6 and older are OK on the Secret Falls tour, the tour operator does recommend that children under 10 should only participate if the parents are confident that their kids can do hiking in muddy conditions. The same warning applies to older adults. If you are in good health and do well outdoors, you'll likely do fine on this trail. If you are subject to injury if you were to slip and fall in the mud, this isn't the right tour for you.

Occasionally people ask us how hard it is to paddle UP the Wailua River. Actually it isn't hard at all. The river is so flat that there is seldom any noticeable current while you are paddling. The greater issue is wind ... and on a typical tradewind day that helps blow you UP the river. It is actually more difficult to paddle DOWN the river (against the wind) than it is to padde UP the river (with the wind). If you are concerned about this at all, we recommend a morning timeslot. Tradewinds typically kick up and get stronger in the afternoon.

If you're looking for more of an adventure than river kayaking, check out our Na Pali Kayak tour ! It is a 17 mile trek along the Na Pali coast, but is only recommended for experienced kayakers and is only available in summer half of the year.

Secret Falls Kauai Kayak + Hike: Complete 2024 Guide

Planning a trip to Kauai and thinking about a waterfall hike? Consider Secret Falls Kauai!

One of the most popular excursions in Kauai (on par with boat tours of the Na Pali Coast or helicopter tours over Kauai) is a guided kayak plus hiking tour to Secret Falls.

The Secret Falls kayak tour on Kauai’s Coconut Coast is a super fun half-day adventure for moderately active visitors to the island, and it’s also a relatively less expensive excursion if you are visiting Kauai on a budget.

Wailua River in Kauai, Hawaii

Secret Falls is actually one of the most-visited waterfalls in Kauai , so it’s not much of a secret. Officially Uluwehi Falls, this waterfall is located in the Wailua River Basin on the east side of Kauai.

Visiting Uluwehi Falls is one of the top things to do in Wailua River State Park .

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know to enjoy the Secret Falls kayak tour, which includes kayaking the Wailua River and hiking through lush rainforest. The journey is as exciting as the destination!

Visiting Kauai? The only way to get a real feel for the rugged beauty of this incredible island is through a helicopter tour! Top Kauai Helicopter Tours

And now, let’s get started with our guide to the Secret Falls kayak plus hike!

What to Expect on the Secret Falls Kayak + Hike in Kauai

The most common way to visit Secret Falls in Kauai is on a guided kayak + hike tour. And at the end of the hike, if conditions permit, you can even cool off with a swim under the waterfall if you choose!

Your excursion begins with a paddle up the scenic Wailua River, the largest navigable river in Kauai (and, indeed, in all of Hawaii). The river is fringed with lush rainforest on both banks, and you may see water birds as you paddle.

Kayaking the Wailua River in Kauai, Hawaii

Since the kayak tour is guided, you’ll be accompanied by an experienced guide and receive a paddling lesson at the start, helpful if you are a kayaking novice, along with information on water safety.

The paddle is about 2 miles each way, and should take you about 45 minutes each way.

Once you secure your kayak at the end of the paddle, you will follow your guide on an exciting hike through the rainforest. The vegetation is incredibly lush, with every shade of green you can imagine, and every size of leaf.

The hike is about one mile each way, with an elevation gain of about 500 feet. It’s a low moderate hike when conditions are dry.

But if it has rained recently (a more than likely occurrence in east Kauai, especially in the winter months), the trail becomes super muddy and slick in places, making it more of a moderately challenging route.

There is a river crossing involved, and one of the advantages of a guided excursion is that your guide will know when it’s safe to cross.

Secret Falls plunges about 120 feet over a cliff into a lovely deep and large plunge pool below. Framed by lush green vegetation, Secret Falls makes for a great photo subject!

Secret Falls in Kauai, Hawaii

When conditions are right (as assessed by your guide), you can cool off from your paddle and hike with a nice swim in the cool waters beneath the waterfall.

For active visitors to Kauai, the Secret Falls kayaking and hiking tour is undoubtedly a highlight. We have done it twice now and enjoyed it both times!

“ This tour was a highlight of our visit to Kauai. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the island plants, animals, and birds. Plus, he was very funny and relatable for kids. The kayaking was gorgeous–2 miles each way was not strenuous. The hiking was also quite flat but very muddy so wear good shoes that can get wet. Everything about the tour was fun–good conversation, beautiful views, and one of the most stunningly beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Assume about 5 hours for the trip. We will return! “

Secret Falls Trail in Kauai Hawaii

What to Bring on Your Secret Falls Kayak + Hike Tour

Proper footwear.

The trail to Secret Falls features uneven terrain. It can also be very muddy and slick after rains, and there is a river crossing involved. Please do not show up in crocs or flip-flops!

Sandals that dry quick, have good tread, and strap securely to your feet are a great choice, as are sneakers you don’t mind getting wet. Water shoes may not offer enough of a grip, especially for the river crossing.

We swear by our Teva sandals ( women’s / men’s on Amazon). We also use Keen sandals, another great option for this tour ( women’s / men’s on Amazon).

Bathing suit and towel

One of the best aspects of the Secret Falls excursion is the ability to swim in the waterfall plunge pool.

If you want the opportunity to swim under the falls, be sure to wear your swimsuit under your clothes, and bring a light absorbent towel to dry off after your swim. Check out this super absorbent yet light towel on Amazon!

Sun protection

The Secret Falls kayak and hike is an outdoor activity in exposed conditions. Sun protection is a must.

Wear a sun hat with a broad brim ( men’s / women’s on Amazon). Lather on the sunscreen (and use a reef safe brand!). Wear sunshades and a lip balm with SPF .

Bug repellent

You are going to be hiking through dense rainforest. Bring bug spray or bug wipes to minimize the chance of bites!

Change of clothing

At the end of the excursion, you’ll be grateful for a change of clothes before you get into your car. It’s very likely your clothes will be wet and mud-stained after your Secret Falls hike.

Snacks and drinking water

Unless you choose a tour that includes drinking water and snacks, be sure to bring you own, to stay fueled and hydrated.

Tips for Your Secret Falls Kauai Visit

Assess if this activity is right for you before you go.

The Secret Falls hike is easier if you have some paddling experience, although novice paddlers receive instruction at the start of the tour and most beginners get the hang of it very quickly. Plus, the river is quite placid, making it easier to paddle.

If you are traveling with younger kids (age 6-9), you’ll want to assess if they will be able to hike a couple of miles on uneven terrain in potentially muddy and slick conditions.

Older visitors will likewise want to make sure they are physically fit enough to hike in these conditions, where the potential for a fall in the mud exists. There’s also a stream crossing to maneuver.

Secret Falls Kauai Hawaii

Choose a morning tour for lower crowds on the hike…

The Secret Falls kayak and hike excursion is one of the most popular things to do in Kauai.

Unless you choose an early morning start time, expect the trail and the plunge pool at the falls to be very crowded on most days. If you start early, you will likely have a much more secluded experience at least on the way to the falls.

…And calmer conditions on the river

The wind tends to kick up in the afternoons.

While paddling up the river to the falls is easy because you will be traveling with the breeze, the return paddle will be a little more challenging.

Earlier in the day, conditions usually tend to be calm, making the paddle easier in both directions.

Use ziploc bags to protect phones and cameras

Your tour operator will likely offer a water-resistant day bag to store your belongings while you paddle and hike, but even so, unless your phone and camera (and any other expensive device) is waterproof, encase them in protective covering to keep them dry.

Choose a dry spell for this activity if your itinerary allows

When it rains (and it rains often on Kauai!), the trail to Secret Falls gets muddy and slippery. Plus, the waterfall can become a torrent and the plunge pool muddy.

If your itinerary allows, plan this excursion for a day when it has not rained recently.

Waterfall Safety

Waterfalls can be exciting, but safety is paramount. Always carefully assess conditions on the day of your visit.

  • Heed all warning signs.
  • Remember that flash flooding can occur with very little or no warning, even if it isn’t raining or stormy where you are.
  • Waterfalls, streams, and other water bodies may not be safe for swimming. The water may not be safe to drink.
  • Rocks, logs, and other debris may tumble over waterfalls into plunge pools or streams below.
  • Always stay on designated trails. Expect muddy and slippery conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions: Secret Falls Kauai Kayak +Hike

Can you visit secret falls independently.

Yes, you can rent a kayak and paddle on your own to the point where the trail begins, hike to Uluwehi Falls and back, and then paddle back to the Wailua marina on your own.

Most visitors choose a guided tour to be able to follow a local guide. While kayaking, you have to be aware of the possibility for flash flooding, windy conditions on the river, motor boats that also cruise the waterway, and debris and low-hanging vegetation that may be on the river en route.

Also make sure kayak rentals are available on the date you plan to visit. Call ahead and reserve your rental to be sure you’ll have a kayak on the day of your trip.

Also know that flash floods can make the river crossing on the hike dangerous at times. Do not venture into the water if the level is too high.

Are Wailua Falls and Secret Falls the same?

Wailua Falls is a double cascade in Wailua River State Park that you view from a roadside lookout. Secret Falls, also known an Uluwehi Falls, is also located in the Wailua River Basin, but accessed via a kayak trip on the river and a hike.

Is Secret Falls worth it?

If you enjoy swimming in waterfalls, then you will love the Secret Falls kayaking and hiking excursion. The paddle on the Wailua River is picturesque and the hike through the rainforest exhilarating. Overall, it’s one of the top experiences in Kauai for active visitors!

Kayaking the Wailua River to Hike to Secret Falls in Kauai: 5-Hour Amazing Hawaii Adventure

Tips for how to do a self-guided tour to this iconic hawaii waterfall.

Kayaking the Wailua River to Hike to Secret Falls in Kauai: 5-Hour Amazing Hawaii Adventure

For travelers like us who seek out unique experiences outdoors, the journey to swim under the iconic Secret Falls in Kauai is definitely a huge part of what makes this half-day activity so much fun. From paddling two miles up a river to sliding around on a muddy trail, this amazing Hawaii adventure will have you feeling like a genuine explorer!

Plus, there’s something special about knowing only visitors willing to take on the river and hike get to see this gem of a place since it is only accessible by the waterway. It really is an amazing experience we highly recommend to anyone who is able to take it on!

As residents of Honolulu over on the island of Oahu , we are always looking for epic day trip ideas for island hopping . On this trip, we knew we wanted to get back over to Kauai to enjoy some time in nature. When I saw that we could pair kayaking up the Wailua River with a waterfall hike, I was instantly sold. However, the low price of a double kayak rental for this 5-hour adventure (under $150!) really sealed the deal.

kayaking wailua river to secret falls in kauai

Our trip was planned for a Monday which worked out perfectly since we realized after some research that tour operators are not allowed to rent out kayaks on the Wailua River on weekends. This time is for the river to rest and the restrictions were put into place due to overtourism. (Read more about this here .)

The more time we spend in Hawaii, the more we understand the importance of limiting the effects of tourism on the land and its people. However, these popular places are still super busy even with the limitations, so keep that in mind!

Our Self-Guided Wailua River Kayaking Trip

There are tours available from multiple local operators that will guide you up the Wailua River and go with you on the hike to Secret Falls. This is ideal for anyone nervous about the trip or who wants to learn more about the area. Although we enjoy some interesting facts, we usually prefer going at our own pace and always try to beat the tourists to our destination.

kayak on wailua river for secret falls hike

We went with Wailua Kayak & Canoe for our rental and they have two options for pickup times Monday through Friday: 7:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Since we were flying in at 7:15 a.m., we called to let them know we’d be picking up a little later. They warned us that this would likely limit our time at the falls and we were okay with that to make this day trip plan work!

Luckily, our Southwest flight was early (a miracle, right?) and we were able to get on the water right before the 7:45 a.m. tour group. It helped that the Lihue Airport is only about 15 minutes from where the tour check-in was.

One of the reasons we chose Wailua Kayak & Canoe is because they are close enough to the river to not need to transport the kayak by car. They have a smart process setup where they give you a two-wheel kayak trolley to take down to the Wailua River State Park boat ramp. Then there is a little dropoff nearby where you leave it until you get back and roll it over to return it. It’s a short walk and very easy!

Even though we were paddling quickly to get in front of as many people as possible, it didn’t stop us from taking in the rainforest-lined river and the lovely weather we were blessed with. We even got a little sprinkle of rain just as we were getting a little winded – so much good fortune!

The two-mile route kayaking up Wailua River is VERY easy to follow and the team goes over it with you before you take off on your adventure to Secret Falls. Plus, it is unlikely you’ll be alone out there on the river, so you can always just follow another group or ask for help.

Fun Fact: The Wailua River is Kauai’s largest navigable river and is about 20 miles long in total, starting in the mountains. It has also made appearances in Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park .

The Hike to Secret Falls in Kauai

I’m a sucker for any outdoor experience that lets me experience a variety of terrain. So, I was instantly in love with the journey to Secret Falls in Kauai simply because it involved paddling and hiking. But the hike itself through a lush tropical rainforest jungle is an adventure in its own right.

Once we pulled our kayak up on land at the start of the hike to the iconic waterfall, I could feel my excitement build with every step. I knew my shoulders would be super sore the next day from so much paddling, but it would be so worth it!

rainy hike on secret falls in kauai hawaii

The hike to Secret Falls in Kauai is only one mile. However, the trail includes sections of slippery mud, tall grass towering over your head, stream crossings, and you even get to scramble up a rocky hill toward the end. However, much of the trail is a great boardwalk that has a non-slip coating that worked very well! It is just narrow, so harder to navigate with people passing by.

sign on secret falls trail about flash flooding warning

You’ll know you are close to Secret Falls when you reach a small stream crossing in front of a little waterfall. This is followed by an area where you’ll need to scramble and climb up a little rocky, muddy hill. However, shortly after this spot you’ll get your first glimpse of the falls through the trees!

small waterfall on way to secret falls on kauai

Important Note : This is definitely a stunning hike, but there are also many ways you could take a tumble. From stumbling over slippery rocks in the streams to falling off the side of the boardwalk or busting it due to mud. I f it has been raining, expect way more mud and way more chances of slipping.

We highly recommend good water shoes to navigate the varied terrain. Flip flops (aka slippers or slides) are a no-go. And you will definitely destroy any sneakers not meant to get wet!

Swimming in Secret Falls!!!

Confession: I wasn’t sure I was actually going to swim under the waterfall. I thought maybe just taking in the views would be enough because being wet for the walk back sounded a little annoying. I don’t know where that occasional voice in my head comes from or who she is, but I’m so glad the gushing water of Secret Falls totally drowned her out!

secret falls in kauai hawaii

Once I saw Secret Falls I knew I’d regret it forever if I didn’t take a dip!

I was thankful for my water shoes as I made my way out to the cool freshwater pool lined with large stones. Buddy was by my side with a big smile as we let the rush of the falls pour over us. I’m not sure if it was the cold water or the “oh my gosh, we’re actually under a waterfall!” feeling, but we were joy-filled and invigorated by the experience.

couple under secret falls in kauai hawaii

Many people sat along the edges and had picnics before heading back to complete the mile hike to the kayaks and two-mile paddle back up the river. We didn’t linger for too long outside of the water because we knew tour groups would be along very soon, but we spent a long moment taking in the beauty and savoring it.

When we tell people we live in Hawaii, I’m pretty sure they imagine we’re out doing things like swimming under waterfalls daily. Alas, not so much. Even here, “real life” takes over and the to-do lists pile up. Getting to take a day to put all that aside and just enjoy this beautiful place was so very needed and appreciated. It was a good reminder that we should prioritize enjoying our amazing home state even more!

About Secret Falls in Kauai

Of course, Kauai’s Secret Falls is no longer a secret thanks to the internet and social media.

secret falls in kauai hawaii

The water dropping down from Secret Falls in Kauai is falling about 120 feet, so it is a beautiful sight to take in – from afar and underneath! Just be careful of your step in the pool and watch out for potential falling rocks. Legend has it that some Hawaii kings would bathe in the cool waters of the pool below. It certainly feels fit for royalty!

Secret Falls is also known locally as Uluwehi Falls, which means “flourishing plants.” This is a fitting name for a waterfall on the Garden Isle. Kauai is known for some amazing waterfalls and nature hikes; this option definitely combines many of the reasons we love this island!

Important Notes for Visiting Secret Falls

If you are planning to do a self-guided or guided tour up Wailua River to Secret Falls, keep these notes in mind:

  • This activity is not recommended if you are pregnant or have had recent surgeries or problems with your knees, hips, back, or shoulders. It is not accessible and has challenging sections.
  • You could easily go over the allotted time if you are not paying attention or need to go at a slower pace on the paddle and hike. Most places will have a late return fee that can get pretty pricey.
  • Many tour operators also offer stand-up paddleboards, but we read these can be extra challenging in high wind. We also liked that going with a double kayak offered some savings, and having four arms paddling got us there pretty quickly!
  • Remember, you are going three miles away from help. We don’t suggest you do this activity if you worry you aren’t physically able to take it on or have a health issue that could be problematic in this environment. We passed a helicopter landing area that is used for emergency rescues, but you probably don’t want to get that bill!
  • Be sure to bring plenty of water as well as drinks and snacks since you will be away for at least four to five hours.

Experience a Peaceful Kayak Tour & Explore Wailua Waterfall

Discover the wonder and beauty of the Wailua River on an unforgettable guided tour that includes kayaking, hiking, and swimming under a waterfall. No prior kayaking experience is needed to enjoy this adventure, which is recommended for all ages. Many of our kayakers are first-timers!

We have six different tour times to choose from Monday through Friday. Tours begin at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. Check in 20 minutes prior to your tour time. You are greeted by our friendly staff and given dry bags and coolers to pack your belongings. After you have checked in, our guide conducts an orientation with safety tips and paddling instruction.

We then transport you in our new van across the river to the Wailua River Marina, about a 2-minute drive. The kayaks are outfitted and launched for you. Attach your dry bag and nylon cooler to your kayak, and off you go with your guide. Couples usually kayak in a double. If you have an odd number of people in your party, we also offer the option of triples and singles. We provide life jackets for all ages and sizes. Wearing them is only required for kids aged 12 years and younger.

Our friendly experienced guides all know the river from top to bottom. They all love their job and are always eager to share their extensive knowledge of  history, legends, and interesting stories about the Wailua River Valley with you. They can identify for you all of the flora and fauna that you encounter along the way. The guides have an abundance of information regarding hiking trails, camping spots, great local restaurants, and other popular outdoor activities. We spend plenty of time at Secret Falls, where you can learn about the Garden Island.

We paddle upstream for about 45 minutes to the trail head where the kayaks are secured. You carry your dry bag and cooler the short 45-minute walk/hike to Secret Falls. The king’s pool at the base of the falls is a great place to swim and cool off. Few places in the world are better for enjoying a BYO (bring our own) picnic lunch and taking photos of the stunning views after a refreshing swim. After languishing in paradise and soaking up nature, we begin the trip back to civilization.

A typical round trip averages 5 hours including paddling, hiking, swimming, and picnicking. We do have occasional rains, especially during the winter months. Our tours are seldom canceled unless the rain is heavy and sustained. Light rains are always welcome while paddling. After returning to the marina, we shuttle you back to your rental car. We are the only company that provides a changing room and shower (equipped with soap) to rinse off after the tour before going on to your other activities or dinner reservations.

10 Adventurous Things to Do on Kauai with Kids

K auai could be the closest thing to heaven on earth. Also known as ‘The Garden Isle’ Kauai boasts the lushest landscapes in the entire Hawaiian archipelago. Overshadowed by the more popular islands of Maui and Oahu , Kauai misses out on the fanfare of its neighboring islands. We think the island is amazing, and these are the best things to do on Kauai with kids.

Where Kauai might fall short in terms of nightlife and energetic vibes it more than makes up for it with adventure opportunities. Whether it’s hiking the trails and scaling the mountain peaks, trekking to secret beaches, enjoying a helicopter ride, or snorkeling in crystal clear waters, Kauai offers excitement for families of all kinds.

Hang on tight because we are going to cover the best adventurous things to do on Kauai with kids with an appetite for off-the-beaten-path fun!

Getting Around Kauai

First, though, let’s chat about the best ways to get around the island with a family. Kauai is quite small, about 25 miles wide and 33 miles long.

It essentially has one major road that winds around the coast of the island. The exception is the northwest part of the Napali Coastline which prohibits the construction of roads.

Private shuttles, a public bus system, taxis, ride-sharing services like Uber/Lyft, and self-drive car rentals are all of the transportation options available on Kauai.

Each option has its pros and cons. To fully maximize your precious Kauai vacation time and seek out the best family adventure activities you will want to rent a car. The car rental process can be a bit confusing. Be sure to research  everything you need to know about renting a car in Hawaii.

Top 10 Best Kauai Adventures for Families

The Hawaiian islands are a top family vacation spot year after year. There are so many  family activities on Oahu ,  Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii . Kauai is no different.

Kauai is arguably the best Hawaiian island for families because of its slower pace, beautiful beaches, and generous activities geared toward young kids.

As promised, here is our top 10 list of the best adventurous things to do on Kauai with kids.

1. Hike to Hanakapi’ai Falls

One of the more adventurous hikes on Kauai, Hanakapi’ai Falls is about an 8-mile out-and-back trail. The first two miles are along the Na Pali Coast spoil you with beautiful ocean views all the way to Hanakapiai Beach. This initial stretch is doable for little kids and toddlers in backpacks.

The final two miles up to the falls will have you traversing 5 different river crossings. This is a much more difficult section. In some parts, you will need to climb over boulders and through muddy sections of the trail.

Make sure to take plenty of water as there are no facilities on this trail and wear appropriate shoes! If you’re feeling extra brave, then don’t stop at Hanakapi’ai Falls. Instead, continue on the trail and it will lead you to Hanakoa Valley.

If you are not a resident of Hawaii you will need to make a reservation at the  Ha’ena State Park website .

2. Rafting Expedition Down the Napali Coast

Calling all thrill seekers! A rafting tour of the Napali Coast is not for the faint of heart. This 12-mile journey will take you on waves up to 20 feet high, through sea caves, and past towering cliffs of the Na Pali Coast State Park.

You don’t just have to limit your experience to an adrenaline-packed ride. Take a break from all the waves and enjoy snorkeling and a picnic lunch in the calm waters of the sea caves.

This is an experience like no other, you’ll be able to explore the best places and waterfalls that are otherwise inaccessible by land.

3. Zoom On a Zip-line

There’s nothing better to get your heart pumping than a good zipline. Kauai’s south shore is home to Koloa, one of the best ziplines in Hawaii.

The 3.5-hour tour will take you through a lush tropical jungle with 8 separate lines that have heights ranging from 300ft to 900ft above sea level. The elevation drops will have you zipping down 30+ miles per hour at times!

This family-friendly adventure meets the highest safety standards so your family will feel secure. To make things sweeter there is also a treetop suspension bridge and ATV rides available for the adrenaline junkies in the family.

4. Explore Queen’s Bath

Once a secret spot known only to locals, Queen’s Bath is a natural tidepool on Kauai’s North Shore. A steep and rocky but short 15-20 minute hike down the cliff will get you to the edge of the clear blue pool that is often full of marine life.

Taking a dip in Queen’s Bath is a total trip but make sure to only get in when the conditions are safe (especially with young children). There are some other little tidepools with shallow water in the same area. This is an ideal place for the younger kids to play.

Make sure not to go too close to the edge and keep an eye on the little ones when conditions are not right. Strong waves have been known to sweep people off their feet and into the sea!

5. Hike Waimea Canyon

Known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon State Park is a must-see, popular spot for any family vacation. The 10-mile-long, 3,000 feet deep canyon was formed by a collapse of a volcano in the area.

There are several lookout points along the rim where you can take in all of the beautiful scenery that this incredible place has to offer. There are also lots of trails that will take you further down the canyon.

A fun hike is the canyon trail to Waipo’o Falls, a magnificent 800-foot waterfall. The trail can get quite muddy in the rain so be mindful and bring the proper footwear.

6. Tube Down the Mountain Ditches

Another exciting Kauai adventure for families is floating down the historic plantation ditches.

You can get a unique 3-5 hours tube ride down the winding mountain ditches that were used for irrigation in the 1800s. This mountain tubing tour will take you through old sugar and pineapple plantations, past beautiful waterfalls, and lots of wildlife that make their home in this beautiful place.

The whole family will enjoy this unique experience but it’s recommended that children over 6 and adults ride in their own tubes. Life jackets and helmets are provided so you can stay safe while you enjoy the ride down!

7. Whale Watching Tour

If you’re trip lands during whale season, then you should definitely book a whale-watching tour .

Kauai’s waters are home to Humpback whales from December until April. These reasonably priced tours will get you close to the whales so you can get an up-close look at these gentle giants.

You may also be lucky enough to see dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life. If you haven’t been whale watching in Hawaii then this is the perfect Kauai activity for the entire family.

8. Off-Road Adventure

Get dirty on an off-road ATV or UTV adventure in Kauai .

This fun family experience will take you through remote trails and open pastures with epic jungle scenes straight out of Jurassic Park , Indiana Jones , and Raiders of the Lost Ark .

This is a great way to learn about the local culture from your knowledgeable guides and explore places that can only be reached on foot or ATV. There are also plenty of opportunities to spot horses, goats, and other animals on the land.

9. Kayak to Secret Falls

Get off the beaten path with a kayaking adventure to the incredible Secret Falls . Though it’s not really a secret anymore, it is still quite secluded.

You’ll paddle up the Wailua River taking in the lush tropical scenery. Then after a short but slippery hike, you’ll explore a hidden valley and reach the falls where you can swim, and play in the pools below the waterfall.

The crystal clear water is perfect for kids to splash around or just relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. This is truly a unique experience and a family memory maker for sure!

10. Hideaways Beach

Pali Ke Kua, also known as Hideaways Beach, is a private beach paradise tucked away out of sight-as the name would suggest.

This stunning white sand beach with crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming and sunning and is a gem of a snorkeling spot when the waters are calmer.

The adventure part comes in when you are trying to locate Hideaways Beach, which is not an easy task. It requires some scrambling down steep steps that involve sketchy handrails and tattered ropes.

It’s a great option for older kids but toddlers are not recommended. However, kids aged 10 and up should be totally fine with a little care.
