Four-day virtual Kerala Travel Mart to begin on May 9

kerala travel mart 2023 date

The second edition of the virtual Kerala Travel Mart (KTM), the flagship event of Kerala’s tourism apex forum KTM Society, will be held from May 9 to 12, seeking to reach out to trade partners, stakeholders and tourists across the world by leveraging digital tools amid a remarkable turnaround in pandemic-hit travel and tourism activities.

Tourism Minister Shri P.A. Mohamed Riyas will inaugurate Kerala Travel Mart 2023 (KTM 2023) through videoconferencing on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Minister for Finance Shri K.N. Balagopal will deliver the keynote address and Minister for Law, Industries & Coir Shri P. Rajeeve will be the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

Kerala Tourism Principal Secretary Shri K.S. Srinivas will preside over the opening session where Tourism Director Shri P.B. Nooh will deliver the introductory speech. KTM President Shri Baby Mathew Somatheeram will deliver the welcome address and KTM Secretary Shri Jose Pradeep will propose a vote of thanks.

Besides business meets, seminars on live themes, led by officials, experts and stakeholders, will be held as part of the event, offering insights into the latest trends in the tourism sector the world over and Kerala’s position as a major experiential tourism destination.

There will be virtual business meets for three days from May 10 from 11.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m., while seminar sessions are scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on these days.

A biennial event, KTM held a physical conclave last year, which had an overwhelming participation of delegates and stakeholders from many countries, marking the resilience in the tourism sector of Kerala.

The first edition of virtual KTM, held in 2021, saw a total of 44,500 business meetings and online discussions. The maiden edition triggered a remarkable initiative towards the marketing strategies of Kerala Tourism in the new normal and could showcase the new products and experiences to the outer world and helped rebuild Kerala’s tourism sector.

Organisers said KTM 2023 would be a great opportunity for the members to avail the virtual stalls free of cost. It will also enable those members who have missed the KTM 2022, one of the biggest tourism marts conducted in India post COVID-19, to stay connected with their counterparts.

The inaugural session will also be attended by KTM’s Past Presidents Shri Jose Dominic, Shri E.M. Najeeb, Shri Riaz Ahmed and Shri Abraham George.

KTM has come up with an online sellers’ presentation to provide assistance to the members in booking of stalls, stall designing, booking of advertisement slots and scheduling appointments with buyers.

In March 2021, the KTM organized a virtual summit that enabled the travel industry to evolve strategies to overcome the COVID-triggered economic recession.

The 2000-constituted KTM Society is the country’s biggest organisation in the travel and tourism segment.

The second edition of virtual Kerala Travel mart, the flagship event of the KTM society witnessed good participation from trade partners, stakeholders and tourists. Business meets and seminars on live themes were held as part of the event. They reflected the latest trends in the tourism sector around the world and projected Kerala`s position as a major tourism destination. The Tourism Minister Shri P. A. Mohammad Riyas who inaugurated the event virtually stressed the government`s efforts to strengthen investment in the development of infrastructure, capacity building and marketing in order to stimulate the growth of the travel and hospitality industry. “The Tourism department will strengthen the marketing activities to ride on the momentum created during the post-pandemic period. This will enhance the footfall of domestic and foreign tourists in the coming tourism season,” the minister said. Right from its inception the Kerala Travel Mart has been getting generous support from the Government of Kerala and it could complete 11 editions of the event very successfully. The last KTM held in May 2022, conducted after a four-year-gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, was also a great success. There were 234 international and 900 domestic buyers in the last physical KTM held from 5 to 8 May 2022 in Kochi, the minister said. Virtual business meets and seminar sessions were the highlights of the four-day event. The Kerala Travel Mart has been taking place continuously every two years since its inception. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it did not conduct business in 2020. However, a virtual Mart was conducted from 1 to 10 March 2021 with the active support of Dept of Tourism, Govt of Kerala, and it was a great success.

Kerala Tourism is on high growth trajectory: Kerala Tourism Minister Sri. Mohamed Riyas

The 12th edition of Kerala Travel Mart (KTM-2024) will be held on four days from September 26 next year at Kochi, showcasing Kerala’s strength in the tourism sector before a global audience.

kerala travel mart 2023 date

India’s largest tourism and hospitality conclave that draws delegates from across the world, KTM will further strengthen Kerala Tourism which is already on a high growth trajectory, Kerala Tourism Minister Shri P.A. Mohamed Riyas, told a press conference here today, in the presence of office-bearers of KTM Society, the organisers of the event.

The inaugural ceremony of the flagship event will be followed by three days of sessions at the Sagara and Samudrika convention centres in Willingdon Island on September 27, 28 and 29, 2024.

The run-up to KTM-2024 will see a pre-mart tour from September 22 to 26, involving media persons, vloggers and influencers. There will also be a five-day post-mart tour across Kerala from September 30 for select buyers of KTM-2024.

The buyers at the event will be from the USA, UK, Russia, Middle East, South Africa and other European countries, including Scandinavian, organisers revealed. Decades of outflow of Malayalis to other countries has been enabling the residents of those places to visit Kerala on knowing more about the state, they said.

While the 2000-constituted KTM Society is the country’s biggest organisation in the travel and tourism segment, the biennial meet is billed as Asia’s largest tourism event with stronger international representation.

Shri Riyas said Kerala Tourism (KT) has made a fast recovery from the setback inflicted by Covid-19 and it is making a great stride now. During the first half of this year, the state registered record in the arrival of domestic tourists and also made significant progress in foreign tourists’ footfall.

“Along with the globally-recognised tourism destinations in the state, the new tourism products and initiatives being implemented by KT have elicited good response from India and abroad. New tourism models like Keravan Kerala, Wedding Destination, Responsible Tourism activities, identifying unexplored tourism centres (Destination Challenge), Health-Wellness tourism and Adventure Tourism are being implemented with the active participation of local bodies and private players,” he noted.

Shri Riyas informed that ‘Kireedom’ bridge will be the first project to be completed under the Cinema Tourism initiative and the MoU for Heli Tourism will be inked in December this year.

According to the Minister, Kerala has been following a tourism approach that gives great emphasis on sustainable practices, woman-friendly activities and ensuring benefits for local community.

Shri Riyas said the new tourism policy is catering to the welfare of stakeholders and capable of immensely contributing and strengthening tourism industry. He revealed that the government is willing to accept and implement new ideas from travel and hospitality industry.

Noting that KTM 2024 will ramp up the tourism sector and industry, Shri Riyas extended the support of the government for the run-up activities to the event.

The business sessions of KTM 2024 will be held on September 27, 28 and 29. Public can visit the expo on September 29.

The 12th KTM will accord special focus to Kerala as a wedding destination. Authorities see an overexposure of tourist spots outside of the state as an opportunity to woo travellers to Kerala. Its abundant beaches, backwaters, forests, tea-gardens and the general lush greenery make God’s Own Country an ideal tourist destination amid the cultural and culinary richness besides strong infrastructure and transportation facilities including air, water, rail and road connectivity.

Besides its emphasis on promoting Responsible Tourism, the upcoming KTM will strive to boost MICE (meetings, industries, conferences and exhibitions) tourism. In addition to hosting large events in metros such as Kochi, leisure destinations are also equipped to host variety MICE events. The G20 working group’s meet at the scenic Kumarakom near Kottayam in March-April this year was an example to the state’s USP in this segment.

Cruise tourism is another area where the 12th edition of KTM is giving focus. Authorities are optimistic about roping in potential buyers from this segment as well.

Today’s press meet was addressed by Department of Tourism Secretary Shri K. Biju, Kerala Tourism Director Shri P.B. Nooh, Tourism Additional Director (General) Shri S Prem Krishnan and Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Smt Sikha Surendran, besides KTM Society President Shri Jose Pradeep and Secretary Shri S. Swaminathan. Also present were Immediate Past President Shri Baby Mathew Somatheeram and Past President Shri EM Najeeb.

The 11th KTM in 2022 facilitated more than 55,000 business interactions in its three days. The buyers totalled 1,134 (234 of them from abroad), while seller stalls totalled 325.

2. Sources told news agency ANI on August 20 that the central government has directed airport, ports and border authorities to remain vigilant in response to the global rise in Mpox cases. "We have alerted airports, ports and borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan," sources said.

3. As per the sources, the Union Health Ministry held meetings with experts on the new virus scare, which "is different" from the previous Monkeypox virus. “We had a meeting with states and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) last week. Point of entries are on alert. It's a self-limiting virus...”

4. The government has declared three hospitals – Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, and Lady Hardinge Medical College – as nodal centres for the isolation, management and treatment of patients. "Three central hospitals will have facilities for isolation like Safdarjung hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and Lady Hardinge...nodal officers are already in hospitals. Testing facilities are available at 32 ICMR centres," the sources reportedly said.

5. Serum Institute of India (SSI), the world’s largest vaccine maker, is “working on developing” shots for Mpox , Chief Executive Officer Adar Poonawalla said in a statement Wednesday.

“In view of the global health emergency declared due to the Mpox outbreak, the SII is currently working on developing a vaccine for this disease to cater to millions of lives that might be at risk. Hopefully, with the ongoing progress, we will have more updates and positive news to share within a year’s time," Poonawalla said.

6. Sources also said, "Chances of mortality are high but there is a low chance to affect India. This disease occurs with rashes." According to ANI, the high-level meeting was briefed that, as per the present assessment, the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low. They also clarified that there is no correlation between Mpox and COVID and that the symptoms of MPox are like those of chickenpox.

'New clade of Mpox'

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified Mpox as a public health emergency of international concern due to its outbreak in various parts of Africa. However, no travel advisories have been issued by the WHO at this time.

A WHO official said that clade 1b is particularly more severe than clade 2. There are two broad clades of the virus: clades I and II. Clade II was behind the global Mpox outbreak that began in 2022. As per the WHO, the current understanding is that clade I leads to more severe disease and death than clade II in the populations where it is endemic.

List of countries where Mpox cases have been reported so far

MPXV clade Ib is linked to the outbreak in the eastern provinces of the DRC. They have been detected in four countries neighbouring the DRC, which had not reported cases of Mpox before: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, the WHO reported.

"Additionally, in 2024, cases of Mpox linked to MPXV clade Ia have been reported in the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo , and cases linked to MPXV clade II have been reported in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Nigeria and South Africa," the global health body said.

The WHO Secretariat informed on August 19 that during the first six months of 2024, as many as 1,854 confirmed cases of Mpox were reported by States Parties in the WHO African Region. Those accounted for 36 per cent (1854/5199) of the cases observed worldwide. Of these confirmed cases in the WHO African region in 2024, 95 per cent (1754/1854) were reported in the DRC, which is experiencing an upsurge of cases of Mpox with more than 15,000 clinically compatible cases and over 500 deaths reported.

M&A News: Alaska Air-Hawaiian Airlines Merger Passes DOJ Antitrust Hurdle

August 20, 2024 — 07:22 am EDT

Written by Sheryl Sheth for TipRanks  ->

Alaska Air Group’s (ALK) potential combination with Hawaiian Holdings (HA) , the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, has passed the major antitrust regulatory hurdle. Alaska released a statement noting that the time period for the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation into the long-pending merger expired this morning. This implies that the DOJ is not worried about the merger triggering any monopolistic or anti-competitive issues. The deal now awaits the final clearance from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Potential Benefits of the Alaska-Hawaiian Airlines Merger

Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines announced their willingness to merge in December 2023, in a $1.9 billion all-cash deal . Alaska agreed to pay $18 per share to acquire Hawaiian and assume $900 million in debt. The deal has faced its fair share of hurdles, with the DOJ’s acquisition review period getting delayed time and again.

Both companies have maintained that the merger will strengthen their offerings in the Hawaiian zone through more frequent flights. Together, the two companies are expected to have more than 50% of Hawaii’s market share.

If the deal goes through, the combined entity would become the fifth largest air carrier in the U.S. Alaska would have access to over 360 wide-body and narrow-body jets across more than 130 destinations. The two carriers have also agreed to retain their brands.

For Hawaiian Airlines, the deal would infuse fresh liquidity and expand its reach. Travel to Hawaii from Asian countries, especially Japan, has failed to pick up pace even after the pandemic. This has greatly impacted Hawaiian Holdings’ financials and stock price performance.

Is ALK a Good Stock to Buy Now?

On TipRanks, ALK stock commands a Strong Buy consensus rating based on seven Buys and one Hold recommendation. The average Alaska Air Group price target of $53 implies 51.6% upside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, ALK shares have lost 10.5%.
