How to reach Purandar Fort

Narayanpur village is well connected to Pune through NH 4. State transport buses frequently operate from Pune to Narayanpur.

Purandar is a beautiful hill fort located on the outskirts of Pune. The fort stands 4472 feet above sea level and is located near Narayanpur. Most of the strucutres here are still intact. It's a must visit place during the winter or the rainy season. Below, you will get some useful information about this fort, which will help you in planning your next trek here.

Routes: From Pune, the easiest way is to go towards Saswad via Hadapsar and then take a diversion from Saswad which will lead you to the fort. There's a slight chance that you might get confused near Saswad. The locals at Saswad can help you with the directions or you can always make use of Google Maps. The trek can be started either from the very base or the mid section of the mountain. There's a nice motorable road that will take you to the central section of Purandar. We'd recommend that you drive till the mid section if there are senior citizens or kids in your group. This way, you can reduce the trekking effort quite substantially. A few years back, this fort used to be open 24/7 for visitors. However, there's a miltary camp near the fort now and there's a time restriction in place for visitors. You can only visit during 9am to 5:30 pm.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips : Difficulty level is Medium. It will take approximately 2 1/2 hours to reach to the top from the very base. Make sure that you carry plenty of water and some snacks with you. The trek is not that tiring, but it's better to have supplies with you. If you start trekking from the mid section, 30 minutes are enough to get to the top.

Camping and Accomodation: We don't think camping is allowed here as there's a strict entry and exit time for visiting the fort. However, if you are travelling from a far away place, there are plenty of hotels that offer cheap accomodation near Purandar. You can either stay at the hotels in Narayanpur or in Saswad. Both these places are only a few kilometers away from the fort.

Structures : The fort has 2 main sections. One flat area is at the center of the mountain. The other part is the actual fort The other prominent structures on the fort are the various temples, the statue of Murarbaji Deshpande, Dilli Darwaja and the Kedareshwar temple.

Purandar Fort is present in Saswad village, 50 km away from Pune , Maharashtra . This is the fortress where the Chhatrapati Sambaji Raje Bhosle was born . Sambaji was the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji . Shivaji had the first win by capturing this fortress. Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb captured this fortress in 1665. But it was under his control for only five years. After 5 years Shivaji redeemed and waved the Maratha flag on the fortress of Purandar. A tunnel in the fort Whose path leads out of the Fort. Shivaji used this tunnel to go outside during the war.

Purandar For History

Chandrasampat Deshpande took Purandar Fort from the Bahamani government. He started the reconstruction of this fort. His family member Mahadji Neelkanthrao worked hard to complete this work. This fort was conquered around Nizamshahi Sardar Malik Ahmad in about 1489. In the year 1550 fort comes under Adilshahi. Adilshah imprisoned ShahajiRaje (Father of Shivaji Maharaj) in 1649 AD. This was the period when Shivaji Maharaj captured many Adilshahi forts. So Adilshah sent Fattekhan to handle Shivaji Maharaj.

The situation was very complicated for Maratha king. On one hand, his father was in jail, while on the other hand, “Swarajya” was in danger of being attacked by the Fattekhan. Maharaj chose the place Purandar for the battle. This fort was under the control of Mahadji Nilkanthrao. Shivaji succeeded in taking advantage of the fight between Nilkanthrao and his brother and entered the fort. With the help of Purandar fort, the Marathas fought against Fattekhan and won the battle. Shivaji Maharaj got great success in his first battle.

In 1655 Shivaji Raje appointed Netaji Palkar as the “Sarnaubat” of this fortress. According to Marathi calendar, Vaishakh Shaka 1579 nine, 16, 1657 On Thursday, the day of Sambhaji king was born in this fort. In 1665, Mughal Sardar Jai Singh started the war of Purandar. The description of this struggle is visible in a historical document “Sabhasad Bakhri” .

In this war, Mughals defeated Maratha. When the Shivaji came to know about this, he started talking with Jai Singh and on 11th June 1665, historical Purandar’s agreement was signed which is known as ‘ Purandar Tah ‘ . As per this agreement, Maratha’s had to give their 23 forts to Mughals . These fort names are 1. Purandar 2. Rudram or Vajragad 3. Kondhana (Sinhagad) 4. Rohida 5. Lohagad 6. Visapur 7. Tung 8. Tikona 9. Prabalgad 10. Mahuli 11. Manaranjan 12. Kohoj 13. Karnala 14. Sonagadh 15. Palasad 16. Bhandargad 17. Naradurga 18. Margad 19. Vasantgad 20. Nangad 21. Ankola 22. Khirdurg (Sagargad) 23. Maangad.

On 8 March 1670, Nulopant Mujumdar conquered this fort again and brought the fort under Maratha Swarajya. After the death of Sambhaji king, Aurangzeb won the fort and named him “ Azamgad “ . On behalf of the Marathas, Shankarji Narayan took a Purandar Fort from the Mughals. In 1695, Chhatrapati Shahu gave the fort to Peshwa. This fort was the capital of Peshwas for the long period. In 1697, Gangabai Peshve had a son on the fort, which was named Sawai Madhavrao . The British captured the fort in 1818.

Purandar Fort Information

The geographic location of the fort is located at the 18.18-degrees latitude and 74.33-degrees longitude. The fortress is approximately 20 miles to the southeast of Pune and six miles to the Southwest of Saswad. Most of the surrounding area is a flat surface. On the west, there is the hill range. Historical Sinhagad Fort is located in the 13-14 miles northwest and Rajgad Fort is located in the 19-20 miles to the west.

There is a village named Narayanpur in the foothills of Purandar Fort. This village has a temple of Lord Shiva built in the time of Yadava. It is estimated that this fort was built about 1000 to 1200 years ago. The fort is strong and the is used for better defense. All aspects of the citadel are inaccessible excluding one facet.

Places to see on the fort: Rameshwar Temple: This was a private temple of Peshwa. When we are moving towards this temple, the remnants of Peshwa’s double-storeyed palaces are visible. Bini Darwaja(Door): This is the only door on Purandar machi. You get this door while going to the fort from Narayanpur village . The door is still in good condition. After entering the door, there are guard windows. There are two roads, one goes straight ahead and the other turns to the left side. When you are on the straight road, you see army barracks and some bungalows on the ramp. The overall length of the machi is one mile, and the width is 100 to 150 feet. On the way forward, a ‘Purandeshwar’ temple is seen on the right side of the citadel.

Delhi Darwaja(Door): This is the north-facing door. At the flip of the door, there’s a temple of goddess Shri Lakshmi. The door is good condition. After coming inside this gate, any other door is seen at the right. The left wing is going to the opposite end of the fortress. You can see a few water tanks here. There is nothing special to watch here.

Purandeshwar Temple: This is the lord “Mahadev” temple . In the temple, there is a one and a half feet tall statue of Lord “Indra” . This temple is generally of a Hemadpanthi architecture. The Peshwa Bajirao I had reconstructed this temple.

How to reach Purandar fort?

Distance from Pune: 60 Km Distance from Mumbai: 200 Km

Driving to Purandar fort:

Just search on google maps for ‘Purandar fort ‘ and Google maps will show you a road until almost the top of the fort. There is a parking space inside the fort.

Purandar Fort is currently under the control of Army forces. The fort closes at 5 pm every day. Once you reach the gate of the fort, you will have to produce your ID before entering. If you are on a bike, make sure you wear a helmet.

From the vehicle parking place, it will take around 45 minutes to go to the top. Since fort closing time is 5 PM, make sure you reach around three hours before the fort gate closing timings. Sometimes the army people could be rude and say that you would not be able to visit the whole fort if you reach by 3 PM.

So have ample time before you reach there. From fort base, you would not be allowed to carry mobile phones and camera with you. Those need to be deposited near the entrance gate.

Purandar fort History:

There is a temple of Narayaneshwar at the base of Purandar fort in Narayanpur village which is said to be 1000 years old. Narayaneshwar temple was built by Yadavas. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

It is said that Persian invaders invaded this area and made the Purandar fort at the hill-top in 1350. To prevent Purandar fort from falling, a man and a woman were buried alive under one of the fort bastions to appease its patron deity.

The story is not only limited to normal people. It is said that the king of Berar then ordered his minister to bury a firstborn son and his wife into the foundation of the bastion. This was promptly done and after a further offering of gold and bricks.

When the bastion was finished, the minister was given possession of the fort and the father of the sacrificed boy was rewarded with two villages.

Purandar fort has witnessed many tussles between Shivaji and Aurangzeb. There is also a church at the Purandar fort. It is believed that when British captured this fort, they made a church at the top.

Purandar Fort Trek | History | Images | Places to visit near Pune

Purandar fort is situated in the mountain range of the Pune district. The height of the fort is 4472 Ft (1387 m). Despite being in Pune district, the fort is far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Some forks have burst to the east from the original line extending from south to north of the Sahyadri. One of them is a fork. Going towards Sinhagad, the same fork is about 24 km further and after that you get Bhuleshwar.

Purandar and Vajragad are situated in this mountain range. To reach Purandar, one has to cross three ghats namely Katraj, Bapdev, and Dive. The base of the fort can be reached by crossing these three ghats.

A different history is told behind the origin of the name Purandar fort. There is a village called Narayanpur at the foot of Purandar. The original name of the village was 'Pur'. The fort was named 'Purandhar' after this village. It is said that the name 'Purandar' was corrupted over time.

Purandar Fort is very large in size. It is equally strong with expansion. But at present, the fort seems to have fallen to some extent. But in history, this fort was very important for defense. Because there is enough space on the fort.

The fort could fight for a long time with a large stockpile of ammunition and grain. All other sides of the fort are inaccessible except one side. From the fort, one can easily see the surrounding area. The fort is 20 miles southeast of Pune and 6 miles southwest.

Purandar Fort History-

During the Bahamani period, Chandrasampat Deshpande of Bidar took possession of Purandar on behalf of the Bahamani government. He rebuilt the fort himself and his descendants for the next few generations. In 1489, the fort was conquered by Nizamshahi Sardar Malik Ahmed. Later, in 1550, Adilshahi conquered this fort and it remained in the possession of Adilshahi for a long time.

In 1649, Adilshah captured Shahaji Raja on this fort. At the same time, Shivaji Maharaj was taking possession of many forts of Adilshah. Adilshah also decided to make arrangements for Shivaji Maharaj to save the fort from escaping from his hands and sent him to Fateh Khan for that achievement.

On the one hand, the imprisoned father and on the other hand, the self-government threatened by Fateh Khan was in trouble, and to solve this problem, the Shivaji Maharaj chose Purandar Fort for the battle.

At that time Adilshah's loyal Sardar Mahadji Nilkanth was the head of the fort. Taking advantage of the quarrel between his siblings, Shivaji Maharaj entered the fort and won the battle with Fateh Khan.

The fort came under the control of the Marathas. In the year 1655, Netaji Palkar was elected as the head of the fort. And the golden moment on the fort of this period is the birth of Sambhaji Maharaj on 14th May 1657.

But in 1665, Mughal chief Jai Singh laid siege to Purandar Fort. At the same time, Purandar was ruled by Murarbaji Prabhu, the chief of the famous people. He had a thousand men with him, a thousand of the fort, a total of two thousand people.

Seven hundred of them were selected and Murarbaji marched on Dilerkhana. Murarbaji fought valiantly but Murarbaji fell and along with that Purandar passed away. Shivaji Maharaj had to give a total of 23 forts to the Mughals, including Purandar Fort.

On March 8, 1670, Nilopant Mujumdar brought Purandar back under Swarajya. After the death of Sambhaji Maharaj, the fort was conquered by Aurangzeb and named Azamgad. Later, on behalf of the Marathas, Secretary Shankaraji Narayan quarreled with the Mughals and took Purandar. In 1695, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj gave the fort to the Peshwas. For many days the fort was the capital of the Peshwas. In 1818, the fort was captured by the British.

What to see? -

Although Purandar and Vajragad are situated on the same hilltop, they are two separate forts.

Bini Darwaja-

This is the only door on Purandar Machi. This gate is used on the way to the fort from Narayanpur village. Upon entering through the door, there are guard porches. Purandar's moat in front attracts our attention. Once inside, there are two lanes, one going straight ahead and the other turning left at the back. As you proceed along the straight road, you will see army barracks and some bungalows on the slope. Going a little further, you will see a temple at the foot of the fort on the right. Temple's name is Purandareshwar

Purandareshwar Temple -

This temple belongs to Mahadev. The temple has an idol of Indra ranging from one and a half to one and a half feet. It should be a Hemadpanthi haircut in general. This temple was renovated by Bajirao.

Rameshwar Temple -

In the back corner of Purandareshwar temple is the Rameshwar temple of the Peshwa dynasty. It was a private temple of the Peshwas. A little further up from this temple are the remains of the Peshwa's two-storied palace. The fort was built by Balaji Vishwanath at the beginning of Peshwa. There is a well behind this castle. Going a little further from here takes two parts. One way goes up towards Balekilla while the other goes down towards Bhairavkhindi. After going up towards Balekilla, a person comes to Delhi Gate within 15 minutes.

This is the north-facing door. At the turn of the door is the temple of Shri Lakshmi Mata. Upon entering, another door appears on the right. The path on the left leads to the other end of the fort. This route takes some water tanks.

As you enter through the Delhi Gate, you will see an edge on the left going straight east. That's the Khandkada. At the end of this ring is a tower. After seeing the tower, come back to the door. A path leads from here. There are a few water tanks around this road. A little further on, there is a hill on the right. This is where the remains of Amber Khana can be seen. If you look up a little, you can see the ruins of the castle. As you walk along the road, you come across some water tanks. Continuing on this path, one path goes down to the left. After passing this path, Kedar Darwaza comes.

Padmavati Lake-

After passing the statue of Murarbaji, you come across Padmavati Lake.

Shendarya Buruj-

Behind the Padmavati lake, to the north-west of the fort, along the ramparts, a bastion has been built. Its name is Shendarya Buruj.

Kedareshwar-

After seeing Kedar Darwaza and walking for 15 minutes along the main road, it takes a few steps. They take you directly to the Kedareshwar temple. The original deity of Purandar is Kedareshwar. There is a stone lantern in front of the temple. There is a stone pavement all around. The temple of Kedareshwar is the highest part of the fort. From here you can see Rajgad, Torna, Sinhagad, Rayreshwar, Rohida, Malhargad, Karrahepathar. Behind this Kedar hill, there is a tower called Konkanya tower.

Purandar Machi-

Hello everyone and welcome again in journey to visit awesome forts of Maharashtra. One of dilapidated but really beautiful for Purandar fort. It is one of the fort that decorated with natural beauty.

Introduction to The Fort of Purandar

You might be familiar with various forts situated in the Sahayadri mountain ranges. One such less explored and safely hidden from much attention is the Purandar fort.

This fort is 4472 feet above sea level and 50 kilometers away from Pune. Purandar Fort is considered to be a twin fort of Vajragadh fort. Purandar fort is taller than and is to the west of Vajragadh fort.

When we reach the fort, we are recommended to see the old temples around the fort. From the top of the fort, Vajragadh fort and other hills offer a spectacular view.

This is an exciting and noticeable place with immense historic importance. The fortifications of this fort have played an important role.

This fort has been mentioned a lot of times while talking about fight of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj against Adilshah, Mughals, and Vijapur Sultanate.

The historic background of this Purandar fort goes back to the Yadav clan of the 11th century.

After that, the control of this fort was taken over by the Persians, and then it was controlled by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ’s grandfather Maloji Bhosale till the 14th century.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ’s son, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was also born in this fort. The fortification of this fort has been recently damaged.

The magnificent engineering of this place which lies in the center of the Western Ghaat, the vastness of this magnetic field continuously attracts tourists.

Information About Purandar Fort

You need to climb an asphalt road that goes from Narayanpur to the fort’s entrance. The purandar fort was the one of great stronghold of Maratha Empire .

The footpath that leads to the fortification has been closed down, and hence, this asphalt road acts as the main access road of the fort.

It is possible to take vehicles upon this road and hence one can go halfway up to the fort by vehicle.

Purandar fort is under the army’s control, and hence, tourists are prohibited to visit this place after 5 p.m. Also, photography is prohibited on the fort.

There are two entry points to reach the top of the fort. One entry point is the parking area that surrounds the banyan tree which lies at the foot of the mountain.

The motorway of Narayanpur will take you to the foot of the fort. The ‘Binni Darwaja (Road)’ lies here, which is the main entrance of the fort.

The Catholic church of the British era welcomes everyone at this entrance.

The actual climb starts from the back of this church. It takes approximately one hour to reach the top of this fort.

The second entry point begins at a place at the foot of the fort, where the road from Narayanpur ends and steps begin.

The other route is to get off at the village situated at the foot of the mountain and start climbing from there. The sprawling mountain ranges with their extensive vastness make this route very impressive.

This road lies on the fortification road. The Fort has two specific levels. The lower level of this fort, known as ‘Machi’, has a few temples of this fort’s Gods and Goddesses.

This level has a Catholic Church that takes us back to the 19th century. This church is not far from the first entrance. There are steps right from the bottom of the fort, and they take us to the top of the fort.

This place has the best creation of this fortification, the ‘Binni Darwaja (door)’. Similarly, there is a temple ‘Kedareshwar’ (dedicated to Shiva) at the topmost point of this fort.

The main slope of this fort has two water tanks. Though most of the parts of this level are in ruins, one can definitely visit the old temples of Kedareshwar, God Indra, and Goddess Laxmi.

One can view the entire surrounding from this fort very well. Since the Sahayadri mountain ranges have Vajragadh, Torna fort, Sinhagad, and Rajgad fort close to them, one can have a clear and extraordinary view.

Narayanpur is a village well connected to Pune through N.H. 4. State Transport Buses run between Pune and Narayanpur at a good frequency.

The easiest possible way to go to Purandar fort from Pune is via Hadapsar-Saswad road. You will reach the road leading towards Purandar monastery in the village of Narayanpur. The fort is just a few kilometers away from here.

From Pune, you can catch the first bus that goes to Kapurhol/Saswad and then catches one more bus that goes to Narayanpur, which is the village in which Purandar fort is located. You can easily walk up to the Purandar fort from Narayanpur.

The route from Pune railway station to the village at the foot of the fort: Aaga Khan road – Station road – Saint Vasvani Road – South Kamaan (Arch) Road – Prince of Wales Road – N.H. 65 – S.H. 64/Pune Saswad Road – S.H. 64/S.H. 63. Approximately 19 kilometers ahead of S.H. 63/64 (from the Western Ghats of India), here lies the Purandar fort.

The nearest airport to the fort is Pune International airport (PNQ), which is approximately 20 km away.

The nearest Railway station is Pune which is approx 40 km. Take a state transport bus or taxi from the station to reach the fort.

Purandar Fort is approx 195 km from Mumbai via the Mumbai-Pune express Highway and takes about 4 hours.

It is approx 40 km from Pune city and takes 1.5-2 hours.

About Purandar Fort

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is said to have been born in the fort.

From this fort, the burgeoning Maratha kingdom launched its war against the Adilshah of the Bijapur Sultanate and the Mughals. It is divided into two sections.

Coming to the structure, The upper part of the fort is referred to as a Balekilla, and the lower part is known as Machi.

During that time, a hospital and cantonment were located in the lower portion of the fort, while the upper part was surrounded on three sides by a steep drop.

In the fort complex, there are a lot of temples. The name of the fort came from the Purandeswar temple. In the Balekilla, there is also a temple dedicated to Shiva, Kedarshwar.

Purandar Fort Timings and Entry Fee

The fort remains open from 9 AM to 5 PM. There are no entry fees.

Trek to Purandar Fort

The Purandar Fort, which is close to the city of Narayanpur, is one of the favorite destinations for visitors and also an ideal hiking spot. At the base village of Narayanpur, there is also a well-known temple dedicated to Lord Narayaneshwar.

The trek to the fort takes about two hours from the base village. In the monsoon, the view of the fort from the Balekilla is stunning, and visitors particularly enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes.

In the monsoon, the area surrounding the fort is covered in lush greeneries.

Beginners would require comparatively more time to reach the hilltop than intermediate and experienced trekkers. The climb is steep in some places, slippery and rocky in others. It calls for some strength and endurance.

The complete journey, including the stop at the fort and the return, takes about 4 to 6 hours. To ensure they have a safe and enjoyable climb, trekkers should carry their trekking and rain gear, snacks, and water.

History of Purandar Fort

The expansion of the Maratha kingdom against the Adilshah of Bijapur and the Mughals began from this fort. This fort is one of the oldest forts in India.

In the year 1646, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took control of it.

In 1665, Shivaji Mahraj and Aurangzeb agreed to the “Treaty of Purandar.” According to the agreement, Shivaji gave up 23 forts, including Purandar, and a region with annual revenue of four lakh Hons (gold coins). Shivaji Maharaj was the Jagirdar of the territory.

In 1670, Shivaji Maharaj recaptured the fort from Aurangzeb after 05 years. The Peshwas later controlled the place. Karoji Naik, a Koli chief, conquered it in 1690, and it came under General Pritlzer.

The fort came under the control of the Britishers in 1818 during their reign in India. The British used the fort as a prison during World War 2.

When India gained independence in 1947, the fort was recognized as a historical monument under the Indian government.

The natural beauty of Purandar Fort

There are several bastions towards the north along with a grand gate with two towers. The upper level of Purandar Fort is known by the name of ‘Ballekilla.’ Tourists are mesmerized by the beauty of Dilli Darwaza, an archaic and odd structure, also known as Delhi Gate. Purandar Fort has a beautiful Shiva temple as well.

History of Purandar Fort

The historical significance of Purandar Fort is very intriguing as it came into existence as long as in the 13th century. There were some walls and bastions built around the fort in the 14th century by the Bahamani Sultans. The great Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj established control over the Purandar Fort in 1646 A.D. However, the mighty Mughals besieged it in 1665 A.D. and took control over the Fort. Shivaji Maharaj then recaptured the Purandar Fort in 1670 A.D.

According to the historical records, Purandar Fort was constructed during the 11th century under the rule of Yadava dynasty. It is believed that several rulers ( including British and Marathas) of various dynasties ruled the Fort. As per the beliefs of Hindu mythology, the hill on which the fort is seated was brought here from the Himalayas by Hanuman.

In the present time, Purandar Fort is visited by tourists because of its stunning scenery and hiking trails. It is also a perfect spot for a refreshing weekend getaway from the neighbouring cities.

Purandar Fort offers blazing hiking trails for all the trekkers and hikers out there. Most of the travelers come here for a trek to experience the stunning vistas of the Wester Ghats. To reach the Tar road, you have to cross the Binni Darwaza. After driving along the road till the base of the fort, walk for 500 metres more to reach the steps. You will reach the Purandeshwar Temple and stay there for a couple of hours.

Remember that Purandar Fort comes under the military area and there are timing restrictions. Make sure to leave the place by 5 pm.

See how the eclipse transformed America, city by city

For weeks, if not months, those who have seen one repeated to anyone who would listen: There’s nothing like experiencing the totality of a solar eclipse.

For some of them, this was a second time in six and a half years experiencing the eerie calm when the moon passes in front of the sun, at least for a few minutes. And yet, they were just as awestruck.

For others, it was a likely last opportunity to witness such a celestial phenomenon for two decades. It inspired gasps and smiles, solemnity and excitement.

Here is how it looked as the moon’s shadow crossed three countries and 13 U.S. states, with the time of totality in Eastern time.

Uvalde, tex., 2:29 — 2:33 p.m., russellville, ark., 2:50 — 2:54 p.m., carbondale, ill., 2:59 — 3:03 p.m., bloomington, ind., 3:04 — 3:08 p.m., tiffin, ohio, 3:11 — 3:15 p.m., littleton, maine, 3:32 — 3:35 p.m..

A group of professors and students traveled from the United States to El Salto to conduct the most thorough experiment ever using an eclipse to test Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Einstein’s idea held that the massive sun would bend the light of surrounding stars more than previously estimated, proving that matter can pull and warp space and time.

The researchers used five telescopes to measure that effect more closely than ever, measuring stars that appear so close to the sun’s edge they can only be viewed during an eclipse.

After a countdown in Spanish, the sun darkened, and the data collection began. “TOTALITY,” yelled Sam Jeffe, a third-year physics major at Willamette University as it appeared in the telescopes’ lenses. “And it’s clear!”

Researchers will feed the data into the computer program, which will analyze the position of the stars and determine how the sun bent the light around them. But, for now, more than half the battle was done.

2:27 — 2:31 p.m.

Eagle pass, tex..

On U.S. soil, totality first came into view in the border city of Eagle Pass, Tex., where a crowd gathered at a football field erupted into cheers as the skies darkened above them.

A singer crooned, “I’m walking on sunshine!” People put on protective glasses and craned their necks toward the sky. Many began to clap.

Vita Garza Flores, 76, traveled from Northern California to see the eclipse in the city where she was born. She brought her daughter and brother along with her.

She grabbed her eclipse glasses, positioning them across her sunglasses: “Wow!”

Students from Uvalde High School were also among the citizen scientists using the eclipse to learn more about the sun and its effects on Earth.

They joined Southwest Texas Junior College’s STEM club in participating in a program known as the Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse. Called Citizen CATE, it will combine short videos of the eclipse taken via telescope into an hour-long movie that NASA says will detail magnetic structure within the sun’s corona and reveal its density. That will help scientists to measure the strength of the solar wind — charged particles that can disrupt electricity grids and produce auroras when they reach Earth.

In Russellville, NASA gathered scientists and broadcast the eclipse’s progress live online. Tourists gathered there, too, wearing T-shirts that declared, “I got mooned at the eclipse.”

A jazz band from Arkansas Tech University played. NASA hosted workshops and Q&A sessions with scientists, at least one of whom has been to space: Among the visitors were Mike Massimino, a veteran of NASA space flight missions to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002 and 2009.

Carbondale, Ill., earned the title of “eclipse crossroads of America,” having fallen in the path of totality for a 2017 solar eclipse as well as the event on Monday. This time, at least, the skies were clear for totality, and a full stadium of eclipse fans burst into collective screams when the moment came.

“This is so much better than 2017,” a one commentator on NASA’s live broadcast noted. “It’s so much darker than 2017.”

To many of those who experienced it, the eclipse was a spiritual event. In Bloomington, Buddhist monks marked it with a puja ceremony, a “ritual honoring and promoting inner and planetary healing,” according to the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center.

Eclipse watchers flocked to Yellowwood Lake where they could experience the eclipse in nature.

When the last pulses of the sun’s rays make their way to Earth before an eclipse enters totality, they appear like a brilliant diamond set on a golden ring. In Tiffin, that meant a chance for some “unforgettable” weddings at an event called “Elope at the Eclipse.”

3:18 — 3:21 p.m.

Niagara falls, n.y..

Crowds flocked to landmarks across the path of totality for a memorable view. At Niagara Falls, despite a thick blanket of clouds, people gathered on the banks of the Niagara River and trained their phone cameras toward the sky. Streetlights turned on, if only briefly, when darkness descended.

The moon’s shadow reached North America at the beaches of Mazatlan, Mexico, just after 2:07 p.m. Eastern time. Just about 90 minutes later, it crossed the wilderness of northern Maine, on its way toward Canada, and then, the North Atlantic.

A total solar eclipse will next dim communities in the contiguous United States in 2044, but only in parts of Montana and the Dakotas. The country will have to wait one more year for the next coast-to-coast phenomenon, a total eclipse that will stretch from California to Florida on Aug. 12, 2045. It will be a Saturday.

Screen Rant spoke to Callum Keith Rennie about how he and Rayner fit into Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Rayner's unrevealed backstory, and where Star Trek ranks in his remarkable career of starring in several major franchises and hit TV shows.

Callum Keith Rennie Discusses How Rayner Fits Into Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Screen Rant: Rayner is already one of the best foils for Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery . Tell me about Rayner and what makes him tick, from your point of view.

Callum Keith Rennie: I think he comes from a different time. I mean, from the creation of Rayner, he comes from a more authoritarian dictatorship-style shiip commander, and The Burn, and a kind of a warring Kellerun mentality. And his jam. And it's a little act first, think later style. Let's not have a conference. Let's just do stuff.

I love the friction between Burnham and Rayner. But I also love the counterbalance that's already been shown in the way they behave towards each other.

Callum Keith Rennie: Yeah, there's a bit of like he's holding his tongue. And he's trying. I mean, that's the part that I find interesting is that he knows he's maybe his last legs here. And so he's creating conflict.

What I find really interesting, too, about Rayner is that he's been a Captain in Starfleet for 30 years, and Burnham has been Captain for 2 years. But there's now this shift in the balance of power between them. What can Burnham learn from Rayner, and vice versa?

Callum Keith Rennie: I think Rayner is learning forgiveness, and second chances, and someone put a hand out and not to bite that hand. But he is still caught in who and what he has been, and how he's functioned for so long. It's hard for him to drop that. So I think through the process of the season, there's a bit more of an understanding, of listening, compassion, and a sense of camaraderie rather than man against alien, or against the galaxy, or one guy can do it all. And for Burnham to go, 'Oh, this wildcard and that kind of style of things can help too.' So there's an amalgamation of the two of them into a functioning unit.

Rayner is on the right ship if he's going to learn compassion, and cooperation, and empathy. That's kind of Discovery's deal.

Callum Keith Rennie: Yeah, and it's hard for him. That was the fun of playing this guy. 'I don't fit in here.' And coming into a show that was already very well established, you're the new kid in school. You don't know who your alliances are gonna be. You don't know how any of it works. And so you just have a chip on your shoulder, and just try to get through. And let's see what happens. So it was interesting.

There's More To Learn About Rayner In Star Trek: Discovery

I assume Rayner has a first name and a backstory we're going to find out at some point.

You may. There's a backstory that kind of lets you know why he's wired the way he's wired, and why the Moll and L’ak thing is getting him in a way that's wound him up, maybe.

One little backstory tidbit that has already been revealed is that Rayner and Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) were friends , and they worked together back in the day. I think that's really cool. I would love to see flashbacks or something of Rayner and Vance in a previous Starfleet.

Callum Keith Rennie: There were things. I think there were lots of opportunities if it was moving on to another season. It was all set up in the way where you go, ‘Oh, let's throw in this and this.’ And then, if it had continued, then you would get backstory bits. You would have gotten a type of history that was completely different.

I'm so glad you brought that up because it was actually one of my questions. This is the final season. But were there ideas or plans for you to stay on so we get to explore Rayner if Discovery got a season 6?

Callum Keith Rennie: Yes… We assumed it was gonna continue. We weren't shooting [season 5] as ‘this is the final season.’ They'd left loose ends going because we can put that into next season, this and that, and blah, blah, blah, all of those pieces of the puzzle that showrunners and writers are very good at so. Because I finished the season and I went, ‘Well, okay. I learned a lot. And I can't wait to come back and do other things.’

How Will Captain Rayner Rank In The Star Trek Universe?

I don't know if you've watched Star Trek Picard, but Rayner has already been compared very favorably to Todd Stashwick playing Captain Liam Shaw . And it's a pretty big compliment. Because people hated Shaw at first, and they came to love him. He's now a beloved character. And I feel like Rayner is on that same trajectory.

Callum Keith Rennie: It's good to be [hated]. And I don't know that reference though I will look it up. But [Rayner] was like, 'I don't want to be liked.' Like, he was coming in and going, 'It's not my job to be liked. And it's not my job to be liked as the captain of a ship, either.' So it was fine. Like, I went, 'If I'm hated, that might be better.' (laughs) And then, through the writing, I go, 'Oh, I see this. They're creating places of understanding and connection.' There's a journey for him. It's not just one singular path.

In episode 3, Rayner meets Discovery's crew, and then you had one-on-one meetings with everybody. And you played everything very stone-faced, but was there anything the cast said or did that actually cracked you up in real life? Because some of the stuff they were saying was hilarious.

Callum Keith Rennie: No. That sequence was... there were some bits of it that... things change in editing. But I was like, 'Dismissed. Get out. Beat it. Quick, quick, quick, quick.' The edit actually made it a lot softer than it was. It is a lot harder.

Is there a scene or a moment in season 5 that has happened yet, or it's still to come, that you loved shooting, and you can't wait for everybody to see?

Callum Keith Rennie: I mean, on first viewing, there's always a kind of like a disconnect for me. I watched [episodes] three and four again last night, and I really dug it. I really dug parts of it that I hadn't seen before. I love specific moments and where Burnham and I ended up sometimes, and it's quiet, it's not a bunch of noise. But not a specific scene because sometimes you start a scene one way, and you think know what this will be, and you go, 'Oh, this was really nice'. But you kind of have to see it to go, 'Oh, I really dug that.' And so, last night watching 50, there were some really beautiful things between Burnham and Rayner that I really got a kick out of.

504 is incredible. Without spoiling, it's the best episode I've seen so far of season five. A fantastic Star Trek episode.

Callum Keith Rennie: We're all over the place. 503 was me going, 'I want what I want.' And I have to listen to the captain of the ship tell me how to meet people who I don't want to meet. And I want to follow Moll and L'ak, I want to get Moll and L'ak, I want to do my mission. And I'm used to doing my thing my way. I'm not gonna wander around [and] have people come to me. I don't care. Okay, next, beat it. And it's an episode of, 'Who is he on the ship left to his own devices?' He's going to do his own thing. So it was fun to play.

Callum Keith Rennie Has No Idea About Star Trek's Impact On His Legacy

You've been a part of a lot of franchises. You've been in Marvel, you've been Battlestar Galactica , your career is amazing. Where does Star Trek rank for you now?

Callum Keith Rennie: Where does it rank in all of that? It ranks as the last job. You know, you've been in this business for a long time. You've done a bunch of things. But I do often have to remind myself by looking at [my] resume and I go, 'Oh, yeah!' Because there's a part of me that forgets it. I like working, and I like doing stuff, but I always kind of forget the history of it until I look at it. It's like looking at old pictures: 'I remember that. I remember that. Oh, I remember her. I remember that. I remember that director. I remember that day. I remember that burrito. I remember all of that.' It's been an amazing career of lots of ups and downs and, some really great, solid shows like this one, and Battlestar, and Californication. Things I'm very, very proud of.

I hate to break it to you, but you're going to be known as Rayner forever now within Star Trek. And this is a fan base that follows you and will stay with you forever. Are you looking forward to doing conventions, meeting the fans, and being part of that?

Callum Keith Rennie: I've done one convention ever. And that was for Battlestar once in London, England, because somebody had dropped out, and then someone said, 'Do you want to?' and I'm like, 'I'm not sure'. This might have been 15-16, maybe 12 years ago. There's a place where I can see how participation in [Star Trek] is interesting. Again, I'm working on the show. I'm not thinking of any of that stuff. I actually don't know anything about it because I don't know the Star Trek world. Like the Battlestar world post-show I didn't participate in. So I did the show, the show is over, then you move on to the next thing. It was never holding on to history. But this one may be different just because I had no idea the volume of things that were going to show up, and the amount of people and interviews and all of that stuff. I'm just amazed.

About Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. Calling back to a single 30-year-old episode of television is a time-honored Star Trek tradition , one that’s led the franchise to some of its most fascinating detours. And in its two-episode season premiere, Star Trek: Discovery seems to be kicking off an entire season calling back to one particular episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

And not just any episode! The 1993 installment of Next Gen in question delivered a revelation so seemingly earth-shaking that it should have rewritten galactic politics on a massive scale. But then, as was the way in the 1990s era of episodic TV, nobody ever mentioned it again.

At least until now.

[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.]

Writer Michelle Paradise and director Olatunde Osunsanmi lay out the connection at the end of the first of two episodes released this week, “Red Directive.” Discovery’s mission is to follow a series of ancient clues leading to a cache of ancient technology, and to get there before a couple of professional thieves, Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis), do.

The technology, as Doctor Kovich (David Cronenberg) explains, belongs to the so-called Progenitors, a barely understood ancient spacefaring species that “created life as we know it […] every humanoid species in the galaxy.” Presumably such tech holds the key to understanding how the Progenitors did that, and how that power could be used again.

The Progenitors are from the Star Trek episode “The Chase”

Kovich also calls up a helpful video presentation of the moment the Progenitors were discovered by an assembled group of Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Cardassian captains, including Jean-Luc Picard. But you don’t have to be a Star Trek lore nerd to know you’re actually just looking at clips from an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Specifically, from the 20th episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation ’s sixth season, “The Chase,” in which Picard and crew discover pieces of a computer program hidden inside the DNA of species from dozens of different planets. Questions abound: What does the program do? And what kind of entity could have been so ancient and powerful that it had determined the genetic legacy of most of the known galaxy before sentient life had even evolved here — and then left no trace of its existence except the genetic codes themselves?

In a nutshell, the mysterious death of Captain Picard’s old archeology professor (did you know that if he hadn’t gone into Starfleet, Jean-Luc was studying to be a space archeologist? Well, now you do) sets the captain and the Enterprise on a search for the missing DNA fragments necessary to complete his unfinished work.

The Progenitor hologram appears before a group of Romulan, Klingon, Cardassian, and Starfleet captains and crewmembers in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The action of the episode becomes a grand chase, as Klingon and Cardassian captains come to believe the program must be a great weapon or dangerous secret. Eventually Picard and his rivals all discover the lonely planet with the final DNA strain — and when they get there, some Romulans who’ve been secretly following all of them show up, too, just to make things even more tense.

In the end, the program isn’t a weapon or a secret, but a message from an ancient race of humanoids that apparently created sentient life in our galaxy as we know it.

Actor Salome Jens appears as a Progenitor hologram, and delivers a speech that’s stirring by any standard of Star Trek monologues, telling the story of a race of sentients that took to the stars and found them empty. They had evolved too early to meet other forms of sentient life, and knew that their time was too limited to ever expect to.

“We knew that one day we would be gone; that nothing of us would survive, so we left you,” Jens’ Progenitor explains. The Progenitors seeded humanoid life across the galaxy in their own image; life that tended to evolve into bipedal, tailless, largely hairless creatures with two eyes and two arms and five fingers on each hand. And they left clues in the genetic signature of their work, broken up among the stars.

Wait, was this really all about lampshading the limits of Star Trek’s alien design?

Salome Jens as a Progenitor hologram in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Chase.” Jens is under heavy makeup as a slightly androgenous alien in a white robe, with deep set eyes, small ears, a bald head, and mottled pink-brown skin.

Kinda, yes! The writers of “The Chase,” Ron Moore and Joe Menosky, were inspired by elements of Carl Sagan’s Contact , but also by Menosky’s pet fascination creating an in-universe explanation for why all the common alien species in Star Trek are basically shaped like humans (albeit with latex on their faces).

In other hands, it would be hokey and trite, but even under heavy makeup, Jens sells the hell out of her single scene on voice and stance alone — it’s no wonder she was asked back to the Trek fold to play a major antagonist role in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

“It was our hope that you would have to come together in fellowship and companionship to hear this message, and if you can see and hear me, our hope has been fulfilled,” the Progenitor hologram concludes, with gentle compassion. “You are a monument, not to our greatness, but to our existence. That was our wish: That you, too, would know life. [...] There is something of us in each of you, and so something of you in each other.”

But though “The Chase” carried a sweeping revelation, nothing ever really panned out from it. You’d think that a message of togetherness that fundamentally rewrote the origin of life in the universe would have to have tweaked Star Trek’s galactic politics a bit, right? Seems like this would give the Star Trek setting a radically different understanding of the origins of life than we have in the real world — this is literally intelligent design! At the very least there’d be some other characters talking about how humans and Vulcans, Klingons and Romulans and Ferengi and Cardassians and Trill and Bajorans, all share the same genetic ancestor.

But nope: The Pandora’s box of Progenitor lore remained closed. Gene Roddenberry’s successor and Trek producer Rick Berman seems to have been disenchanted with the episode’s reveal — and you can’t really blame him for not wanting to rock the whole cosmology of Star Trek in an episode that’s mostly about explaining how if you turn the DNA snippets like this they make a cool spiral. Now look at this computer screen with the spiral :

Except now, Star Trek: Discovery is opening the box and rocking the boat. Star Trek's Scotty played by a Scot for first time

For the first time in almost 60 years Star Trek character Scotty is being played by a Scottish actor.

Previously the role has been filled by Canadian actor James Doohan and Englishman Simon Pegg.

Now Scottish actor Martin Quinn is portraying a younger version of the character in the prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

"We are rebranding him," Martin told BBC Scotland news. "He's from Paisley now."

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott has been a character in the science fiction franchise since it first began in 1966.

Doohan played Scotty in the original series and seven Star Trek films before Pegg took on the role for director JJ Abrams' reboots from 2009.

Martin's young Scotty appeared as a surprise cameo at the end of the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and he will play a recurring role in season three.

The 30-year-old, from the Gallowhill area of Paisley, says he hopes even more Scottish people will watch Star Trek now that they have cast a real Scot.

"It's the power of representation isn't it?" he said.

"I was always into Star Wars because Ewan McGregor was there. It's because there was a Scottish guy in Star Wars.

"Even though he was doing an English accent, I was like 'that's so cool, he's from here and he's in Hollywood'."

While neither Doohan or Pegg had a natural Scottish accent, both actors and their character were beloved by fans.

Martin says: "I think James Doohan based the character off some Aberdonian he had heard, and even Linlithgow has claimed him, but I'm not sure what that's from."

In 2022, when Martin was auditioning for the series, producers gave the show a code name so he would not know it was Star Trek.

"I suppose that helped because you weren’t putting pressure on yourself to emulate James Doohan," he says.

Since taking the role, he says he has been working with writers to suggest authentic Scottish changes to his character.

"They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid," he says.

"Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it.

"And [the writers] are wanting to be authentic to Scotland as well, and that's really nice - not everyone's like that."

Martin says his accent has caused occasional confusion with the North American cast and crew on set.

"I'm constantly having to enunciate because I don't think they know what I'm saying," he says.

"It’s trying to find the balance, because it’s not just Scottish people watching this TV show, but I want to be as authentic as possible to how I speak."

Martin began his acting career when he was six years old at PACE Youth Theatre in Paisley.

The theatre school's alumni also include actorJames McAvoy and singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini.

When he was 18, Martin was cast in the lead role in the National Theatre of Scotland production of Let The Right One In.

It took him to the Dundee Rep and eventually to London's West End where he was spotted by the actors Richard Wilson and Alan Rickman.

They funded the last portion of his scholarship that let him attend Guildhall drama school in London.

However, it was Martin's first paid role in BBC comedy Limmy's Show that he says he owes "everything to".

"It meant I got praised for doing acting as opposed to a slagging" by his classmates, he says.

He also says there can be a working-class boy stigma that if you prefer acting to football there is something wrong with you.

"We’re potentially missing out on the next generation of really good Scottish actors and that is a bit of a worry," he says.

THE London Marathon returns at the end of the month for the 44th edition of the race.

Around 50,000 are expected to take part in the 26.2-mile trek around London.

More than 50,000 people will run in the London Marathon

When is the London Marathon 2024 and what time does it start?

This year, the London Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 21.

Exact race times have not yet been announced but in previous years the elite and wheelchair races have set off at staggered start times from around 8.30am BST.

Runners in the mass participation race - which includes members of the public and celebrities - typically set off at 9.30am BST.

Again, start times are staggered with runners setting off up until around 11am BST.

What TV channel is showing the London Marathan 2024 and can I live stream it?

The race will again be shown across BBC platforms.

BBC One will begin coverage from 8.30am and then run on the channel until 2.15pm.

It will then switch over to BBC Two until 3pm.

Those who want to live stream the race can do so for FREE on the BBC Sport website and on iPlayer from 1pm until 6pm.

What is the route of the london marathon 2024.

The route course has not changed in recent years - starting at Blackheath the route winds through Charlton and Woolwich before heading back into Greenwich.

It then moves north through Surrey Quays and west to Bermondsey before crossing the river north at Tower Bridge.

The London Marathon course route hasn't changed in recent years

After heading east along The Highway, the course does a loop around Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs before heading through Blackwall, Poplar and Limehouse and returning to The Highway.

Runners then head weat all the way past the Tower of London, Monument, Cannon Street, Blackfriars, the Embankment and looping south with the Thames to Westminster Bridge.

They then turn west and travel along Birdcage Walk before heading past Buckingham Palace and to the finish line on The Mall.

Who won the London Marathon in 2023?

Long distance superstars Kelvin Kiptum and Sifan Hassan won the men's and women's races last year.

Kiptum set a course record in last year's race at 2:01:25 before following that up with a world record marathon outing in Chicago in October.

Tragically, Kiptum was killed in a car crash in February.

Double Olympic gold medallist Hassan was running in her first ever marathon last year and even stopped twice to stretch her leg.

She was around 28 seconds behind at the 15-mile mark before storming back to win on a sprint finish, just four seconds ahead of Alemu Megertu.

Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe , 71, will run the Marathon again this year and recently stated he has run almost 40 in his life.

Ratcliffe, however, faces a race to reach United's FA Cup final against Coventry City at Wembley - the game kicks off at 3.30pm.

Olympic hero Sir Mo Farah will run again after finishing 9th last year, while comedian Romesh Ranganathan and actors Ruth Wilson and Christopher Ecclestone will also run, they have confirmed.
