Why Choose Ketchikan for Shore Excursions?

Ketchikan, often referred to as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” is more than just a stop along Alaska’s Inside Passage . It’s a destination that packs a punch with its unique mix of culture, adventure, and natural beauty. So, why should Ketchikan be at the top of your list for shore excursions? Let’s dive in.

Rich Cultural Heritage

Ketchikan is steeped in the rich history and traditions of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. You have the unique opportunity to explore totem pole parks, like Totem Bight State Park and Saxman Native Village, where the stories and artistry of these cultures come to life. This is a chance to witness the enduring legacy of Alaska’s indigenous peoples firsthand.

A Glimpse into Alaska’s Logging History

The lumberjack show is not just entertaining; it’s a live-action journey into Alaska’s rugged logging history. The fact about Ketchikan is that the city has a deep-rooted timber industry heritage. While exploring Ketchikan, you can participate in this one-of-a-kind show, which is family-friendly and full of fun. In it, skilled loggers compete in competitions that showcase traditional logging skills.

Ketchikan is a paradise for animal enthusiasts. The area is teeming with wildlife, from bald eagles and black bears to orcas and humpback whales. Many excursions focus on wildlife viewing, offering visitors the chance to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Our Experiences in Ketchikan

Chris and I absolutely love Ketchikan. The first time we cruised to Alaska, we sailed through the beautiful Inside Passage and stopped in Ketchikan for just one day —only 12 hours! But we packed those hours with awesome shore excursions. Now, we want to share our experiences with you.

We loved our 10-day Alaska cruise so much that we did it again, and of course, we stopped in Ketchikan each time.

When booking tours in Ketchikan, you have options: book a shore excursion through your cruise line or do it on your own as we did. We’re here to share some tips to help you pick what’s best for you so you can enjoy Ketchikan as much as we did.

  • What makes it unique? Paddling among shorelines and the possibility of spotting wildlife—bears, whales, eagles, and more.

Chris and I are passionate about sea and glacier kayaking in Alaska , having embarked on numerous paddling adventures. We always share our genuine experiences with our readers, and the Orca Cove Sea Kayaking Tour is still on our bucket list for our next visit. While on our recent cruise through the Inside Passage, we opted for kayaking in Sitka .

However, the stunning images of Orca Cove have captivated us, fueling our dreams for this particular expedition. The charm of Orca Cove is not just in its breathtaking scenery but also in the promising opportunity to observe marine wildlife up close. This blend of natural beauty and the thrill of wildlife encounters makes Orca Cove Sea Kayaking a future adventure we eagerly anticipate.

Preparing for Your Shore Excursion in Ketchikan

Here are strategies to help you make the most of your shore excursion day in Ketchikan.

  • Research and Book in Advance . Popular excursions can fill up quickly, especially in peak season. Research your options and book ahead to secure your place.
  • Layered Clothing . The weather in Ketchikan can be unpredictable. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing conditions. Include waterproof gear to stay dry during rainforest walks or boat tours. Check out our Alaska cruise packing list to prepare for your adventure.
  • Sturdy Footwear . Durable, waterproof hiking shoes are a must for exploring the terrain comfortably and safely.
  • Don’t Forget your Camera and Binoculars. Capture breathtaking scenery and wildlife. A good pair of binoculars will enhance your viewing experience, especially for eagle and bear watching and scenic tours.

Time Management Tips for Cruise Passengers

  • Plan Ahead . If you get to Ketchikan on a cruise ship, review your excursion itinerary carefully before docking. Knowing the departure times and meeting points can save you precious minutes in the morning.
  • Early Disembarkation. Opt for early disembarkation to beat the crowds and enjoy quieter moments at popular attractions if possible.
  • Back-to-Back Excursions. Schedule excursions with enough buffer time in between. This allows for unexpected delays and allows you to catch your breath.

Our Tip : Check out our detailed Ketchikan itinerary with other tips for cruise passengers.

How to Choose the Right Ketchikan Cruise Excursions for You?

  • Match Your Interests. Ketchikan’s diverse offerings cater to nature lovers, history buffs, adventure seekers, and culinary enthusiasts. Choose excursions that align with your passions for a more fulfilling experience.
  • Consider Your Fitness Level. Be realistic about your physical abilities. While some excursions, like city walks or cultural tours, are light and accessible, others, such as hiking or kayaking, require good fitness.
  • Read Reviews. Previous travelers’ insights can offer valuable information on the quality of the experience, the level of physical exertion, and hidden gems.

Navigating Ketchikan Independently vs. Guided Tours

  • Independence Offers Flexibility. If you prefer a leisurely pace or have specific interests, exploring Ketchikan on your own may be the best choice. Use local transport, or walk to discover the city’s charms at your leisure.
  • Guided Tours Provide Insight. For those interested in learning about the local culture, history, and wildlife, guided tours offer expert knowledge and access to exclusive locations. They also handle logistics, allowing you to focus on enjoying the experience.
  • Mix and Match. Consider combining both approaches. Book a guided tour for part of the day to explore remote areas or learn about specific topics, then spend the rest of the day exploring independently. On your own, with our tips, you can explore Creek Street and downtown Ketchikan .

The 5 Best Ketchikan Shore Excursions for Your Alaska Cruise (2024)

Alaska’s first city, Ketchikan, is surprisingly colorful. The buildings and waterfront are a mosaic of color: greens, reds, purples, and yellows are punctuated with totem poles (including the one in the U.S. passport!) and fishing industry memorabilia. Like most ports in the Last Frontier, Ketchikan has character – as do the Ketchikan shore excursions you can book during your Alaska cruise.

I’ve visited Ketchikan twice in recent years: once as part of an Alaska cruise in 2017 – my unforgettable UnCruise experience – and again as a port stop on my Windstar cruise in 2022. The UnCruise also began in Ketchikan, so I had the chance to explore town on my own and get to know a bit more about what this small Alaskan city has to offer.

Ketchikan Shore Excursions Hero

Based on my experience, I’ve scoured the list of cruise excursions offered by the big cruise companies, and put together my own list of the best Alaska cruise excursions in Ketchikan. I also keep in mind some of the other  tips on choosing Alaska cruise excursions .

On my first visit to Ketchikan, it poured buckets pretty much the whole day. After all, Ketchikan receives precipitation 234 days per year on average! I didn’t let that dampen my spirits though, and neither should you. Even if it’s raining, these are the best cruise excursions in Ketchikan. Read on to discover each one and pick your Ketchikan cruise excursion!

In this post, I promote travel to a destination that is the Lingít Aaní (traditional lands) of the Tlingit peoples. With respect, I make a formal land acknowledgment, extending my appreciation and respect to the past and present people of these lands. To learn more about the peoples who call these lands home, I invite you to explore  Native Land .

The Best Ketchikan Cruise Excursions

One Day in Ketchikan Hero

Given how many cruise companies offer a number of interesting and unique shore excursions in Ketchikan, it was hard to choose which ones to recommend. But, I’ve weighed the options and consider these to be the best Ketchikan cruise excursions. Here’s how I calculated the scores:

  • I went through all of the Ketchikan shore excursions (128) on every company (8) that has any cruise(s) that stop there in 2024
  • I looked at the number of cruise companies offering that excursion this year.
  • I force-ranked the excursions by “uniqueness” with no ties.
  • I calculated what the cruise should cost with my  “Money-to-Time” calculation  and then gave a bonus (or penalty) based on the actual excursion price.
  • Finally, I added up the metrics to come up with a final score.
  • To break ties, I used the “uniqueness” score, since I want to encourage you to try new things in Alaska!

For 2024, here’s my list of the best Ketchikan excursions:

As you can see, the top options for cruise excursions in Ketchikan have changed a lot recently; almost all of the shore excursions I recommend are new on the list this year – but there are a few great ones that have held on to the list in 2024.

For the rest of this post, I’ll highlight five of the excursions on this table and which type of Alaska traveler I think each is best for. Let’s go!

🥾 Best for Adventure Travelers: Eagle Islands Sea Kayak

UnCruise - Kelp Tasting

As I was reviewing all of the Ketchikan cruise excursions available for 2024, I noticed a new one that I haven’t in years past: one that takes you out for a kayaking adventure at Eagle Islands north of Ketchikan. Along the way, you’ll keep an eye out for marine life, sea and land birds, and more. This is a great option for adventurers who want to be active during their cruise.

After taking a motorcoach to the put-in cove and a quick safety demo, you’ll hop into a tandem kayak (solo travelers or odd-numbered groups may be paired up) and – with your guide – paddle out the Eagle Islands in Clover Pass in Tongass National Forest; along the way, you can look for eagles, sea otters, and other coastal critters.

🗿 Best for Culture Vultures: Saxman Native Village & Lumberjack Show

Ketchikan Saxman Native Village

While I think we can agree that the artificial showmanship of the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is definitely a stretch from “authentic,” I think this tour combining a cultural experience at the Saxman Native Village does a nice job of giving you a great historic overview with a decent commitment to accuracy and authenticity.

(A good alternative shore excursion for native culture is the “Totem Bight State Park & Lumberjack Show” but it too has the Lumberjack Show, obviously.)

In any case, this combo tour is popular – and for good reason; it’s long been the #1 tour and only got displaced because Misty Fjords is just so great. If you’re keen to learn about Ketchikan and Southeast Alaskan history and culture, this is the one for you!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Best for Families: Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show

One Day in Ketchikan - Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show

Now, I might not think the Lumberjack Show is the most authentic experience, but it is great for kids – keeping the whole family happy on your Alaska family cruise is hard, but this one does the trick!

I did the Lumberjack Show during one of my recent visits and it really is fun if you’re a fan of these kinds of experiences; the performers do a great job of getting the crowd engaged, playing up the risk, and having a good time.

Best of all, this tour is pretty short – just over an hour – meaning you’ll still have time to walk around, taking in sights like colorful Creek Street and souvenir shopping on your way back to the ship.

🦪 Best for Foodies: Ketchikan Pub Crawl

Alaska Bucket List - Ketchikan

If your definition of “foodie” also includes “drinkie,” then you’ll want to sidle up to the bar for this excursion. During a 90-minute tour of downtown Ketchikan, you’ll participate in a pub crawl through local watering holes, learning about the town’s colorful history along Creek Street.

Having recently sampled some of the craft beer and spirits being made in Ketchikan, I can say with confidence that this tour is delicious – though I wasn’t able to do this specific tour due to it only being offered certain days of the week when larger ships are in port.

🐋 Best for Wildlife Seekers: Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer

Windstar Cruises Alaska Review - Misty Fjords Skiff

If learning about Alaska history isn’t your top priority on your cruise, I’m guessing scenery and wildlife are close to the top of the list. In that case, you should definitely consider booking this excursion to Misty Fjords National Monument.

Large cruise ships can’t enter Misty Fjords National Monument, so you’ll spend this 4.5-5 hour excursion aboard a smaller boat, exploring the deep fjord waterways looking for wildlife like bears and eagles – if you’re really lucky, you might spot whales on the way there or back. Having cruised in Misty Fjords on my first Alaska cruise, I highly recommend this one!

There you have it – my take on the best Alaska shore excursions in Ketchikan.  Have other questions about visiting Ketchikan, taking an Alaska cruise, or choosing Alaska cruise excursions? Let me know in the comments below.

Alaska in March Hero

My husband and I are planning a cruise in Alaska 2022. I don’t mind booking excursions through the NCL ship but in some cases I’d prefer to book through a local group. I really want to do the flightseeing over Glacier Bay NP out of Icy Straight but its very costly at $729. Can you recommend a local tour group that can offer a safe and fun experience? And also in Juneau, we’d like to do the Heli/dogsled/glacier tour and again on the cruise ship its $590… can you recommend a local outfitter where it may be a little bit less costly? Thanks!

Thanks for reading, Caroline! All of the excursions are offered by local operators – so if you google the name of the excursion and the town name, you can probably find the 1-2 operators who offer that tour directly.

My wife and I are looking at the Rainforest Explorattion and Raptor Experience in Ketchikan. I can book the tour with Chase points, so I won’t need to do it through my cruise line. But the Experience is about 7 miles from the cruise dock. Is there an easy way to get there and back?

I’d give them a call to see if they provide a shuttle. That’s the best advice I can give!

Did you review thd Alaska Bear Encounter by Land and Sea in Ketchikan by chance https://my.cunard.com/en-us/mycruise/QU/excursions/KTN/alaskan-bear-encounter-by-land-sea ? I’d love your input ! Now i’m looking at the Mist Fjords Explorer!!! Thanks!

SEE WHY WE'RE AN AWARD-WINNING TOUR

Lighthouse Excursions Icon

It was a cool and rainy day for this tour which turned out to be perfect for finding eagles! We saw 38. The crew of the boat was very attentive to the needs of the passengers... If you take this trip, make sure to enjoy the hot chocolate and salmon spread with crackers.

Could not have asked for a better experience! Our deckhand, Andrew, was instrumental in making it so as my daughter was on crutches at the time. He went out of his way to ensure she had a wonderful experience despite her lack of mobility.

We were lucky on our tour we not only saw Eagles. But even some humpback whales were near. Win-win! Super informative Captain who is a native Alaskan himself!... they give you some snacks to have love the dip they even gave us the recipe! highly recommend!

The wildlife wasn't in captivity. They showed up on time ....... The area was stunning, the crew was knowledgeable, and we got a sea shanty that wasn't advertised. Excellent tour.

As a local, I love this tour. I have gone on it and learned something new. When family or friends come to town this is the tour I recommend. The Captains are great at their job and the crew they hire are funny and informative.

This is a world winning excursion... The captain and crew truly do have so much passion in their service... We received hot chocolate upon arrival, home made delicious salmon dip and crackers as a snack. We saw at least a dozen bald eagles and overall had an outstanding time. Thank you to Anthony, Marcus & Captain Kyle!

Best Ketchikan excursions that I did (Princess cruise + book Ketchikan tours on your own) 🏔 Alaska cruise travel blog

I went to Ketchikan on Princess cruise ships, so my experience is looking for excursions for Princess cruises.

But of course, most of the excursions can apply no matter what cruise line you are on.

And in fact in Ketchikan, I did everything booked independently or things on my own and I didn’t actually do anything booked through Princess.

Still, in case you want to go through Princess shore excursions, I’ll mention that too!

best ketchikan excursions. best ketchikan cruise excursions. best tours in ketchikan

Here is your quick list of best Ketchikan cruise excursions you must consider:

  • Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness seaplane tour with remote landing
  • Snorkel Alaska tour
  • Deadliest Catch tour

If you will be doing any sort of flightseeing tour during your Alaska cruise, I highly recommend you do one with some sort of landing!

It will make the experience that much more epic!

In the case of the Ketchikan seaplane tour, it was a wilderness landing on a tiny island in Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness, and it really felt like we were in remote Alaska!

Ketchikan snorkeling excursion

Snorkeling in Ketchikan?!?!

Won’t you be cold?!?!?!

Actually, NO!

It’s all about what you wear, and you will be given cold water swimming gear (aka a thick wetsuit) to keep you warm!

Almost everyone says that you will NOT be cold!

Even as someone who gets cold easily, I went snorkeling in Ketchikan and can happily say, I agree! Read the reviews!

Ketchikan Deadliest Catch excursion

The Deadliest Catch tour is one of the most popular tours in Ketchikan.

You have heard of the TV show the Deadliest Catch .

And if you haven’t, you need to watch it before your Alaska cruise! The Deadliest Catch is about Alaskan fishermen who go fishing in some of the roughest and deadliest waters in the world. Here’s a preview!

The Deadliest Catch show takes place in the Bering Sea.

You will go nowhere near that in Ketchikan or your Alaska cruise.

Instead, they bring a bit of the Bering Sea to you in an interactive way.

They won’t bring you the rough seas, but they’ll bring you some of the marine life. (aka crabs)

And, you’ll be on the Aleutian Ballard boat, as seen on TV .

It is a rather touristy experience, but almost everyone who goes on the tour loves it.

And tons of people say that the tour exceeded their expectations. Read the reviews!

More popular Ketchikan outings

One of the most popular “cheap” activities in Ketchikan is the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show .

If you are interested in exploring Alaska’s native culture through an excursion, then you will want to do the Saxman Native Village, Dance Performance & Totem Park excursion .

You can go to Saxman Park on your own to see totem poles, but that won’t give you the cultural performance.

If you are interested in seeing totem poles in Ketchikan , then you will also want to consider going to Totem Bight State Historical Park on your own. You can take the Ketchikan bus to get there.

If your Alaska cruise will be taking you to Sitka cruise port , then you can also go to Sitka National Historical Park on your own to see totem poles.

How to search for Princess cruise excursions for Ketchikan

It just so happened that I didn’t do any excursions through Princess while in Ketchikan.

What I wanted to do most was either not offered through Princess so I didn’t get the chance to compare between booking through Princess or direct, or I had other things I wanted to do on my own.

But if you do want to look through the offerings of Princess, you can do so by logging into your account at princess.com .

Once you are logged in, go to: my account > manage this booking > excursions > view excursions for Ketchikan!

You can also look directly at the Ketchikan shore excursions with Princess without logging in if you just want to browse.

But when you want to book, you’ll need to go into your account.

You can also book through the Princess app, but I personally don’t even like the way the shore excursions show up on the app so I wouldn’t even want to look through them!

And then when you are on the cruise ship, you can book through your stateroom TV, and of course directly at the shore excursions desk.

If you are getting on your Princess cruise ship without having booked excursions but are interested in doing so, then there is also a live shore excursions presentation with recommendations on shore excursions to book for Ketchikan and all the other cruise ports you’ll be going to.

If you miss the live presentation, then there will also be a replay available on your TV. If you can’t find it, you can call guest services or do a “crewchat” with them on the app to find out how to find it.

Best Ketchikan tours that are so Alaska

1. misty fjords national monument wilderness seaplane tour.

The Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness is one way you can experience the largest national forest in the United States.

According to the US Forest Service :

Tongass National Forest is the nation’s largest national forest and covers most of Southeast Alaska.

You Alaska cruise will be mostly if not all in Southeast Alaska. If you have a cruise between Vancouver and Anchorage , then you’ll be traveling more than just Southeast Alaska!

Tongass National Forest is the largest, intact coastal rainforest in America. Misty Fjords is a piece of this treasure.

The US Forest Service also says that Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness is the “largest wilderness area” in Tongass National Forest.

The seaplane takes off near the Ketchikan cruise port, then flies over Tongass National Forest, and then soon you’ll be over the Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness.

You can see fjords (of course) and waterfalls as you’re flying.

We then landed on a small island in Punchbowl Lake.

And when I say small… I mean SMALL!

2. Ketchikan snorkeling tour

Snorkeling in Alaska?!?!?!

I was VERY nervous about this, and even upon booking the tour, I was immediately having regrets!

But to reassure myself, I read all the reviews (again), and basically everyone who mentions the water temperature says that you will not be cold because you’ll be wearing a wetsuit and other cold water swimming gear!

And, even as someone that gets cold easily, I must agree!!

For most of the time in the water, the water temperature didn’t even occur to me!

It was a water temperature of 50 degrees.

I was excited about seeing tons of small little clear jellyfish. And I saw a couple of red ones too.

I was also excited about seeing so many starfish.

Plus, I got the experience of cold water swimming and snorkeling in Alaska!

Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour

Description, what's included.

You may have seen this tour topping the charts for things to do in Ketchikan and with good reason. The Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's tour was rated 'Ketchikan Tour of the Year' and consistently receives rave reviews. This one-of-a-kind tour puts you onboard an actual Alaskan fishing boat and right into some astounding scenery, wildlife and of course...crab!

The Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour isn't your ordinary shore excursion. Load up onboard the Aleutian Ballad, an equipped fishing vessel featured on Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch. Meet your hosts - local fishing guides that are full of colorful stories from their experiences which they'll share as you begin to disembark from port. Explore the calm waters of the Inside Passage while keeping your eyes peeled for eagles, seals, sea lions and whales, which are all frequently spotted on the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour. When the time is right, you'll be part of the action as the guides start hauling crab pots and fishing gear containing anything from rockfish, stars, octopus, prawns, halibut and a variety of crab. Specimens will be brought on board the boat in holding tanks so you can actually feel and touch Alaskan king crab!

Tales from life at sea compliment the wealth of knowledge and information shared by your fishermen/guides during the tour. It's hard to believe the danger and adventure inherent in this industry through some of the stories, but unlike many fishing stories, these tales are real! The Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour doesn't head out into the open ocean but stays within the calm protected waters of the Inside Passage making it a smooth sail. Ample seating on the boat allows you to sit back and enjoy the views or choose to position close to the holding tanks to become part of the action. A truly unique experience only found in Ketchikan - but be sure to book early because this one fills up quick!

Please note: If you are cruising on Norwegian Cruise Lines, you will be docking at Ward Cove and will subsequently need more time between your cruise’s scheduled arrival & departure times and this tour. Please ensure you have at least 1 hour of buffer time to comfortably make this tour.

Terrific tour! Captain Kyle's humorous and informative narration was interesting, and we saw dozens of eagles and lots of other wildlife and beautiful scenery.

Our cruise ship was delayed and ASE worked around the situation and we were able to still take our excursion. We loved our captain and had a great time.

We loved every minute of this excursion and appreciated the knowledge and insights of the area that our tour guides and ship s crew shared. We felt welcome and pampered by everyone from the touring company, and their hot chocolate was the best! We highly recommend this excursion!

Very interesting and saw several humpback whales along with other wildlife.

Excellent planning with excellent and professional explanations. Captain was very well understood and knowledgeable.
