King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Trip to Kenya Deemed “a Resounding Success”
By Katie Nicholl
King Charles and Queen Camilla concluded their four-day visit to Kenya in the pouring rain but will leave with a sunny outlook after having received warm welcomes and cementing the important relationship between the two countries.
King Charles III greets members of the Kenyan delegation before departing from Moi International Airport in Mombasa on November 3, 2023.
The trip at the request of the British government was seen as instrumental in developing the already close relationship between Britain and the Commonwealth country and its lucrative multi million-pound trade partnership and on Friday was deemed a “resounding success.”
The visit served as an opportunity for the King and Queen to meet Kenyans, hold bilateral talks with President Will Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto , carry out military engagements and visit the United Nations’ headquarters. The varied and busy schedule, which included visiting Nairobi and Mombasa, time spent at an elephant orphanage and a state dinner, allowed Charles and Camilla to highlight causes close to their hearts.
“Their Royal Highnesses have thoroughly enjoyed the trip. I think it’s fair to say it has been a resounding success,” one aide told Vanity Fair .
With a focus on trade, climate change, young people, sustainability and the military, the royal couple participated in an average of seven engagements a day. The tour’s success will be a relief to palace aides and government officials following mixed responses to previous royal tours to the Caribbean carried out by Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Edward , Duke of Edinburgh and Sophie , Duchess of Edinburgh.
For Ed Owens , historian and author of After Elizabeth: Can The Monarchy Save Itself? , one particular engagement stood out among the others. “The most important moment came at the state banquet held in the king's honor when he spoke of his 'deep regret' for the 'abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence' committed by the British authorities in Kenya in response to the Mau Mau insurgency in the 1950s," he said. "This wasn't the formal apology some had hoped for. But, then again, everything the king says in these moments is essentially adhering to UK government foreign policy: a formal apology might further demands for reparations from other countries for the injustices of the past and, presently, this isn't something the British government is willing to countenance.
Hence King Charles's reputation as a monarch who is ready to confront some of the problematic legacies of Britain's imperial past continues to evolve. The process began in Barbados in November 2021 when he described the 'appalling atrocity of slavery'. It sets him apart from his predecessor, Elizabeth II, who tended to steer clear of controversial aspects of the UK's history. These are issues that some members of the younger generation care deeply about — a constituency that the monarchy urgently needs to re-connect with having seen its popularity among the under 45s plummet in recent years.”

King Charles visits Fort Jesus on November 3, 2023 in Mombasa, Kenya.
According to one royal insider, “there is a sense of relief that this went so well and a feeling that the King and Queen have hit the right notes. Next year we will see them carrying out a more extensive tour of the Commonwealth possibly to Australia and New Zealand and the fact that Kenya has been such a success bodes well.”
Charles and Camilla are said to be delighted with how well the tour went and pleased to have had the opportunity to spotlight causes they champion at home and around the world.
During the program, Charles met with staff and recipients of the International Prince’s Trust while in Nairobi to learn more about resources for young people, and there was a visit to a forest and the Nairobi National Park to learn more about the environmental and conservation challenges Kenya faces.
Queen Camilla visited a library in Nairobi to learn more about literacy in Kenya as well as a charity supporting victims of sexual and gender based violence.
King Charles attends an interfaith meeting at Mombasa Cathedral.
Their tour concluded Friday in Mombasa with Charles visiting the Mombasa Memorial Cathedral to learn the work being done to promote interfaith peace and security in the region. His Majesty was warmly received and arrived to chants of “Long Live the King.” He also took part in a closed-door meeting at Mandhry Mosque.
Meanwhile, the Queen visited The Situation Room where she met staff volunteers and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, a core theme of her work.
Queen Camilla dances with Sauti Ya Wanawake (the voice of women) at the Situation Room in Mombasa on November 3, 2023.
The couple also visited Fort Jesus, a Unesco World Heritage site, via an electric tuk tuk before flying back home to the UK.
According to aides, Charles and Camilla will have the weekend off before resuming a busy diary of engagements next week which will include the State Opening of Parliament and Remembrance Sunday.

King Charles and Queen Camilla's itinerary for poignant visit to Kenya revealed
The late queen elizabeth was in kenya when she learnt of her father's death.
King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to Kenya later this month on a very important State Visit.
The royals, who will be there from 31 October to 3 November, will celebrate the warm relationship between Kenya and the United Kingdom and the strong and dynamic partnership they continue to forge.
But what is in store for the royal couple during their four-day stay? Buckingham Palace has just released the jam-packed itinerary, which will involve a glamourous State Banquet.
The timely visit comes as Kenya prepares to celebrate 60 years of independence. The King plans to understand "the wrongs" suffered by people of Kenya under British rule and first state visit as King to the nation where his mother - Queen Elizabeth II - became Queen, having acceded to the throne in Kenya in February 1952.

During the tour, the King and Queen will visit Nairobi City County, Mombasa County and surrounding areas. Their visit will reflect the ways in which Kenya and the United Kingdom are working together, notably to boost mutual prosperity, tackle climate change, promote youth opportunity and employment, advance sustainable development and create a more stable and secure region.
During the visit, the King and Queen will meet President Ruto and the First Lady as well as and other members of the Kenyan Government, UN staff, CEOs, faith leaders, young people, future leaders and Kenyan Marines training with UK Royal Marines.
The King will also attend an event to celebrate the life and work of the Nobel Laureate the late Professor Wangari Maathai, together with Wangari’s daughter, Wanjira Mathai. The visit will also acknowledge the more painful aspects of the UK and Kenya's shared history, including the Emergency (1952-1960).
King Charles will also take time during the visit to deepen his understanding of the wrongs suffered in this period by the people of Kenya.
Together, Their Majesties will tour a new museum dedicated to Kenya's history and will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Uhuru Gardens, as well as visiting the site of the declaration of Kenya's independence in 1963.

King Charles III seeks to look ahead in a visit to Kenya. But he’ll have history to contend with

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III wants to look to the future when his state visit to Kenya starts on Tuesday. But first he will have to confront the past.
As Charles prepares for the four-day trip to Kenya , he is facing calls to address the legacy of eight decades of British colonial rule, as well as complaints that foreigners still own large swaths of rich farmland, and that the U.K. has failed to accept responsibility for the crimes of British soldiers stationed in Kenya.
The trip will also be closely watched around the world, because it’s the king’s first state visit to an African nation and his first to a Commonwealth member since he ascended the throne last year. It comes at a time when the U.K. and the royal family is under pressure to reexamine the history of colonialism and apologize for its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade .
Behind the history and symbolism, Britain is keen to buttress its modern relationship with Kenya, which includes cooperation on counterterrorism and efforts to boost trade that totals more than 1.1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion) a year. Charles will underscore his commitment to environmental protection with visits to a national park to see vital conservation work undertaken by the Kenyan Wildlife Service.
The king has already shown a willingness to address difficult issues, opening the royal archives to researchers studying the monarchy’s links to the slave trade. Before assuming the throne, he acknowledged the “appalling atrocity of slavery” during a speech on the Caribbean island of Barbados .
“History never disappears,’' said Nick Westcott, a professor of diplomacy at SOAS University of London and a former director of the Royal African Society. “I think that’s how he sees it genuinely himself — that we shouldn’t paper over the past, pretending what didn’t happen, that you have to face up to it. But then the objective is to look at the future.”
Charles, the U.K.’s head of state, travels abroad at the request of the U.K. government and only when he’s been invited by the host country. The hope is that the glamour and goodwill generated by a visit from one of the most well-known men on Earth will strengthen the ties between Britain and Kenya.
Kenyan President William Ruto invited Charles and Queen Camilla for the visit beginning in Nairobi on Tuesday.
In the age of colonialism, Kenya was one of the jewels of the British Empire. It was the starting point for an ambitious railway project linking the Indian Ocean coast with the African interior, and the destination for thousands of white settlers who built coffee and tea plantations.
But the colonial administration also replaced Black leaders, pushed local people off their land and imposed crippling taxes.
That set the stage for the Mau Mau Rebellion of the 1950s, which hastened the end of colonial rule, but continues to cloud relations between the U.K. and Kenya. Colonial authorities resorted to executions and detention without trial as they tried to put down the insurrection, and thousands of Kenyans said they were beaten and sexually assaulted by agents of the administration.
In 2013, the U.K. government condemned the “torture and ill-treatment” that took place during the rebellion as it announced a 19.9 million-pound settlement with more than 5,000 victims
Kenya became independent in 1963, but the country has maintained close, if sometimes troubled, ties with the U.K.
“His Majesty will take time during the visit to deepen his understanding of the wrongs suffered in this period by the people of Kenya,’’ Chris Fitzgerald, deputy private secretary to the king, told reporters before the trip.
Charles and Queen Camilla plan to tour a new museum dedicated to Kenyan history, visit the site where Kenya declared its independence and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Uhuru Gardens.
For the U.K. and allies like the United States, Kenya is a strategically important hub of relative stability and democracy in East Africa, as they combat the threat from Islamic extremists based primarily in neighboring Somalia.
Two years ago, the U.K. and Kenya signed an economic pact designed to boost trade and investment between the two countries and renewed a defense agreement that underpins cooperation on counterterrorism efforts and allows British soldiers to train in Kenya.
But some among a new generation of Kenyans question what links, if any, their country should have with its former colonial power, which left behind not only memories of brutality, but also colonial-era laws, such as the ban of gay sex, that continue to influence attitudes.
The Rift Valley of western Kenya remains a flashpoint for concerns about land ownership, because most of the fertile region’s tea and pineapple farms are owned by foreigners.
Veteran politician and human rights activist Koigi Wamwere says the continued ownership of huge parcels by British citizens while local people have no land is an “injustice that should be corrected.”
Kenya and the U.K. “cannot move forward until they apologize, offer reparations and return the land they stole,’’ he said.
Charles’ visit is also likely to reignite tensions over defense cooperation.
Dozens of people are gearing up to protest what they describe as crimes committed by British forces stationed in Kenya. In the highlands of Laikipia and Nanyuki, east of Nairobi, many in the local community are demanding compensation for a fire allegedly started by British soldiers in 2021.
Local attorney Kelvin Kubai told The Associated Press that more than 100 of the 7,000 victims who were affected have died without compensation.
“The people feel that the buck stops with the king, " Kubai said. “They also feel that as long as he owes an apology (for) the past colonial deeds, he also owes a responsibility to the present atrocities being committed by his forces here in Nanyuki and Laikipia.’’
The unsolved murder of Agnes Wanjiru, who disappeared near a British base in Kenya 11 years ago, is another issue that is likely to surface during the visit.
While a former British soldier is the prime suspect in the case, authorities have yet to charge anyone.
Wanjiru’s family told the AP that they had hoped the U.K. government would contact them about the case, but so far they have heard nothing.
“Numerous dignitaries from the U.K. have visited Kenya, promising to meet our family, but failing to do so,” said Wanjiru’s sister Rose. “They only make those commitments to the media and never honor them.”
With a growing number of people of African origin now living in the U.K. making a connection with the people of Kenya is important to Charles, Westcott said.
“They are an integral part of what Britain is today — and the king is acknowledging that in making this one of his priority visits,’’ he said. “It is not just Kenya he’s visiting. It is Africa.”
Evelyne Musambi reported from Nairobi, Kenya.

She visited the country thrice during her reign, first in March 1972, then in November 1983 and October 1991 as the guest of President Daniel Arap Moi.
Charles, on his part, has since made four official visits to the country in 1971, 1978, 1987, and now in 2023.
The first, in 1971, was with his sister, Princess Anne. They were hosted by Jomo Kenyatta - Kenya's first president - in Gatundu, Kiambu County.
According to iconic photojournalist Mo Amin, Charles and Anne were treated to a traditional welcome by Kenyatta and then-First Lady Mama Ngina.
"He and Mama Ngina gave them (Charles and Anne) rare and valuable gifts, entertained them in their house and gave them a fest of traditional dancing. Smiling and joking, the president captivated the British royal youngsters," wrote Amin in his memoir.
When Kenyatta died in 1978, Charles graced the state funeral resplendent in a white commander's uniform and laid wreaths accompanied by two soldiers at Kenyatta’s tomb on Parliament grounds.

During his three-day stay in 1987, Charles, who was travelling as a director of the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC). He toured several CDC-assisted projects in Kenya. He did not travel with his then-wife Diana.
According to Buckingham Palace, Charles' 2023 visit addresses ‘painful aspects’ of Britain’s colonial past, issues related to climate change and bilateral relations, including national security .
He is expected to visit the United Nations Office in Nairobi , attend a technology showcase with Kenyan entrepreneurs, visit a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery and the Nairobi National Park, and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Uhuru Gardens.
As to his tour of Mombasa County and surrounding areas, he will visit Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa, meet survivors of gender-based violence, and interact with faith leaders from Mombasa’s diverse community.

King Charles (born Charles Costa on May 6, 1985) is an English alternative and indie-rock singer-songwriter, hailing from West London, England, UK.
Having learned to play the guitar, piano and cello from an early age, and being classically trained singer, Charles would regularly perform in his school’s choir. He began writing songs when he 17 having fallen in love with country music and used the guitar as a creative outlet. Following a couple of terms studying sociology at Durham University, Charles returned to his hometown of London with the pseudonym King Charles.
Shortly after, Charles formed the indie-rock band Adventure Playground who called West London’s ‘Bosun’s Locker” their home. After touring with the likes of Laura Marling and Noah and the Whale in the UK, the band split in 2008. As a result Charles launched his solo career in 2009 around the same time as winning the prestigious International Songwriting Competing in Nashville, with a voting panel consisting of Tom Waits, Kings of Leon and Timbaland amongst others.
With an appearance that’s somewhere in between 18th Century royal aristocracy and Prince, and music that lands somewhere between psychedelic rock and indie-folk, King Charles has been turning heads since his debut single “Time of Eternity” in 2010. The single earned the singer-songwriter a host of positive responses including support from online musical press and UK radio DJs including Zane Lowe and Lauren Laverne.
In late 2010 King Charles supported Mumford & Sons on their sold-out tour of the U.S. and signed an international record deal with Universal Republic in conjunction to his independent UK label Mi7 Records. King Charles released his debut album “Loveblood” in May 2012, which reached No. 26 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was supported by an extensive tour and spawned the singles “Bam Bam”, Love Lust” and “Ivory Road”.
Live reviews
King Charles is an extravagantly-dreadlocked, cavalier-moustached alternative folk pop artist. The man himself describes his music as ‘glam-folk.’ The extrovert look, combined with his extreme arrogance on stage, makes for an entertaining, if not always likeable, image. Others seem to agree. King Charles is currently making a bit of a splash and is deemed the next big thing on the scene. He’s been enjoying greater media attention and a slot on the John Peel stage at this year’s Glastonbury.
I saw King Charles in last year Think Tank @ Hoults Yard in Newcastle. The warehouse location provided the ideal setting for King Charles’s indie tunes. The audience packed into the venue and was keen to get involved. The lively crowd quickly got into the swing of things, enthusiastically singing along to Mississippi Isabel’s repetitive refrain: ‘she kissed me once, I took her out for lunch, and she never kissed me again…’
As he often does when performing at larger venues, King Charles gave his music a more alt rock twist, which works when performing folk-pop hits to a less intimate audience.
King Charles is interesting and thoroughly entertaining. My advice is book tickets before he gets too big and prices shoot right up!

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

King Charles Attends Church on What Would Have Been Queen Elizabeth’s 98th Birthday

King Charles and Queen Camilla are spending time in Scotland on what would have been Queen Elizabeth 98th birthday.
On April 21, the royal couple were photographed leaving a church service at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral Castle in Scotland. King Charles, 75, drove himself and his wife, 76, as they waved and smiled at onlookers while departing.
This year marks the late Queen's second posthumous birthday following her death in September 2022 at age 96. And following their attendance at church, the royal couple will likely spend the day celebrating her in private .
Grant Harrold, who from from 2004 to 2011 served on the couple's staff, said there will be reflections, tributes and toasts in honor of the late Queen, but added that the family "won't publicly do anything."
"Privately, I have no doubt they'll raise a toast to her in the evening. I'm sure the day will very much be spent reflecting on the late Queen," Harrold told Slingo
"I can almost guarantee that if you were to go to Windsor Castle that day, it's very likely there'll be some flowers on the tomb that have been sent by the family members," he added. "Sometimes on royal anniversaries, flowers are sent to royal graves. It's very possible there will be flowers on the tombstone."
For the royal couple, the church outing on the late monarch's birthday was one of a string of more public appearances the King has made since he announced his cancer diagnosis in February.
The announcement came weeks after King Charles underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate in January, during which “a separate issue of concern was noted,” the palace said in a statement. (They clarified that the monarch did not have prostate cancer and noted that the type of cancer the King has will not be disclosed to the public)
He then began "a schedule of regular treatments" and postponed most public-facing duties, following medical advice.
He made his first public appearance following the diagnosis at Easter when he attended a church service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle with Queen Camilla and other royal family members.
Following the service, the King did a surprise walkabout, shaking hands and greeting members of the public who were gathered outside.

On April 18, King Charles and Queen Camilla were seen out in London again as they left Clarence House, their royal residence, and were once again waving and smiling at onlookers as they drove away.
Queen Camilla herself recently to a break from public duties for the Easter holiday and for a celebration of her 19th wedding anniversary with the King on April 9.
She resumed her royal duties on April 16 as she welcomed a group of young representatives from Changemakers, a youth group offshoot of SafeLives, a national charity that fights to end domestic abuse, to Buckingham Palace.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.
Know More about this tour
We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
