At 06:45 AM, your adventure begins as you check in at the Fisherman's Pier. Yes, it's an early start, but trust us, you're in for a day full of excitement and adventure during your trip to Klein Curacao. You'll receive a brief but informative introduction, and then it's – off to Klein Curacao! The spacious motor boat glides through the waters for about 1 hour and 30 minutes before you arrive at Klein Curacao.

Five times a week, the Mermaid takes people out to the island of Klein Curaçao for a perfect day by the sea.

When you climb aboard the Mermaid, you’ll be greeted with a warm cup of tea or coffee. Captain Cor and his crew create a great atmosphere that makes you feel welcome on board!

The Mermaid sets sails along the southern coast of Curaçao. From the boat you’ll see Fuik, Duivelsklip and Oostpunt, a completely inaccessible region of Curaçao that has been set aside as a wildlife preserve.Sometimes dolphins swim alongside the boat. Then the Mermaid turns southward and heads out into the blue sea, towards Klein Curaçao.

From a distance, you can see Klein Curaçao’s landmark lighthouse and a shipwreck that was lodged on the beach many years ago. As the boat approaches the coast, you’ll see a few huts, which are used by the local island fishermen. But mostly, you’ll see endless beaches of white sand, waiting to be explored by you.

Once the Mermaid has anchored off shore, you’ll want to take a swim in the crystal clear turquoise water. Take a stroll and visit the historical lighthouse or collect shells on the beach. Lie out on a beach chair and catch some rays of sun with beautiful women in colorful bikinis.

Am Tag 9 ging es mit der Mermaid nach klein Curacao. Das sehr frühe Aufstehen lohnt sich, denn die weißen Sandstrände, die Unterwasserwelt, einfach alles ist atemberaubend. Wir waren mit dem Service auf dem Schiff und auf klein Curacao sehr zufrieden, das Essen schmeckte köstlich und die Toiletten waren sehr sauber. Auf der Insel kann man mal richtig abschalten und die Seele baumeln lassen. Wir sind froh, dass wir auch diese Tour gemacht haben und das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist hervorragend.

What does Klein Curacao with Mermaid look like?

At 06:45 check in at the Fishing Harbour. So the alarm has to go off early, but then you have a wonderfully long day ahead of you: Mermaid offers the trip with the longest stay on Klein Curacao. After checking in, you can find a spot on the boat and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea right away. There is a brief explanation and then a quick departure, off to Klein Curacao! The large motor vessel takes 1.5 hours to get to Klein Curacao. Once the boat has anchored you can swim to the beach, or get into the motor boat that will take you right into the surf. As you look for a nice spot on a beach bed in the shade at the large beach house, the crew goes for a delicious breakfast buffet. After breakfast, explore the island. See the dilapidated lighthouse or washed-up shipwrecks, or marvel at the lizards and crabs you’ll find all over the island. By the end of the morning you will see the crew working hard again for the delicious and extensive bbq lunch. Slide in for the buffet including chicken, spare ribs and burgers, salads and fruit; feast! If you have dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian or halal): let us know and it will be arranged. You will be sitting in the large beach house, in the shade at spacious picnic tables. The bar is also prim: soft drinks, fruit juices, beer, wine, rum, vodka available (alcoholic at a tidy extra cost). After lunch you can relax and enjoy Klein Curacao again. Take a dip in the crystal-clear sea (who knows, you might run into sea turtles) or lie back on your beach bed with a drink. Unique at Mermaid: At the beach house, Mermaid also has a beautiful observation tower. This really is a must for stunning photos (Instagram-worthy!). At 3:30 p.m., unfortunately, it is already time to leave. The return trip is a delightful cruise, riding the waves with the sun. Around 5 p.m., the boat will dock again at the Fishing Port and this beautiful day trip is unfortunately over. But you are certainly a beautiful memory richer.

That’s exactly how you’ll feel on Klein Curacao, which means little Curacao.

Take this adventure, and you’ll spend the day on a long stretch of deserted beach that rivals the best beaches in all the Caribbean.  But a Klein Curacao trip takes a little planning, and mental preparation, so we’re here to make it easy for you.

If you’re heading to Klein Curacao, get ready to start early in the morning.  Your full day adventure will start with a boat trip that lasts about 1 to 2 hours each way depending on your boat (unless you take a fast powerboat, which is a 40 minute option). A very important thing to remember: The seas can get a bit rough, especially on the way there, so make sure to take some seasickness medicine before you set off. You don’t want to spend the whole trip feeling queasy, or worse yet getting sick overboard.

What to Bring to Klein Curacao

Water shoes: The ocean floor near the shore can be rocky, so having water shoes or reef shoes can protect your feet while walking into the water.  

Beach bag or waterproof backpack: A beach bag or a waterproof backpack is useful for carrying your essentials, such as your sunscreen, towel, camera, snacks, and personal belongings.

• FREE CANCELLATION up to 72 hours before departure, provided that the tour operator is notified in time.
• Within 72 hours up to 24 hours prior to the date of the activity. The costs are 20% of the total amount.
• When canceling less than 24 hours before departure or in case of no-show, no refund will be made.
• The cost for changing a booking is € 15 and is only possible after approval of the performing tour operator.

Description

The Mermaid offers all the ingredients for a great day on Klein Curacao. The Klein Curacao specialist is one of the few providers that offers a beautiful beach house with a watchtower on the island. In the afternoon you can also order alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, rum, vodka) at the bar for a good price. Mermaid Boattrips has been sailing to this uninhabited island for over more than 35 years. At 06:45 you must be present at the Vissershaven. After checking in you will be welcomed on the boat with a cup of coffee or tea. The large motor ship takes 1.5 hours to sail to Klein Curacao. Upon arrival at Klein Curacao you can swim to the beach, or get into the motorboat (Dingie) that will drop you off at the beach. Upon arrival at the beach you can enjoy a delicious breakfast first, after which you can explore the island with the Walking Tour of Mermaid Boat Trips.

In the afternoon a delicious and extensive BBQ lunch is waiting for you. Take a seat in the beach house at one of the spacious picnic tables for the buffet including chicken (Halal), spare ribs and burgers, salads and fruit. There are adequate vegetarian options. If you want gluten-free, please let us know when booking so that we can take this into account.  

Approx. 3:30 PM the boat will leave for Curacao where you will moor again around 5:00 PM at the jetty in the Vissershaven.

Are you a diver? Divers are allowed to come along. You can bring your own (or previously rented) diving gear for free. Please report when booking in the comment field if you are going to dive. You must of course be certified and bring your own dive buddy. Please note: a signaling buoy or diving buoy is mandatory!

How to Have an Unforgettable Klein Curacao Boat Trip – Travel Guide and Tips

Klein Curacao is a breathtakingly beautiful uninhabited island, located about 15 miles from Curacao. The trip to Klein Curacao takes 1.5 – 2 hours by boat each way, and the entire trip is an amazing experience. That being said, there is definitely some planning that goes along with a Klein Curacao boat trip – and that’s where this travel guide comes in!

A Klein Curacao boat trip is a great addition to any Curacao vacation. The island is so unique and it’s such a fun experience to spend the day relaxing and disconnecting from wifi and cell service.

There are tons of companies that operate boat tours to the island, and once arrived on Klein Curacao there is plenty to do for a full day.

Klein Curacao Boat Trip

1: pick your tour company wisely.

There are many tour companies that offer Klein Curacao Boat Trips. However, only two companies have structures on the island.

This is important for many reasons. The first, is with a beach structure you’ll have ample access to shade and bathrooms.

You’ll also be able to enjoy lunch on the beach, instead of having to swim back to your catamaran or boat.

I highly recommend booking your Klein Curacao Boat Trip with Mermaid Boat Trips or Miss Ann Boat Trips . Having a beach structure to relax in, access to fresh water and bathrooms, and tons of shade really made a huge difference. Especially because you’ll be on the island for many hours.

2: Bring Seasick Medicine

I’m not sure why this isn’t more heavily advertised, but the sea between Curacao and Klein Curacao is rough – and I mean really rough. I don’t normally get sea sick, and I still threw up the entire 1.5 hour trip. About 1/4 of the people on my boat trip also got seasick, and I was told that this is very common headed to Klein Curacao, as you’re going in the opposite direction of the wind and the waves.

Do yourself a favor and take seasick medicine . I literally wanted to throw myself overboard halfway through the trip because I was so sick.

I’m sure you can buy seasick medicine at pharmacies in Curacao, but to be safe, it’s a good idea to bring some with you. Click here and here for two options.

3: Pack Lots of Sunscreen

This goes without saying, but the sun is strong and since you’ll be outside all day, you’ll definitely need good sunscreen.

4: Pack a Bag With Necessities

No matter which company you choose for your Klein Curacao boat trip, you’ll definitely want to pack a beach bag with necessities. I recommend the following:

• Beach hat or baseball cap
• Underwater camera if you plan to snorkel
• Beach towel
• Portable charger
• Change of clothes

5: Walk to the Lighthouse and Ship Wreck

When you’re on Klein Curacao be sure to check out the abandoned lighthouse and ship wreck! Wear shoes because the path can be rocky, but it’s totally worth the 10-15 minute walk out to the structures.

The views are beautiful and both the lighthouse and shipwreck are very cool to see.

6: Make Sure Your Phone is Charged

You’re going to want to take lots of pictures while in Klein Curacao, so make sure that your phone is charged! There won’t be anywhere to charge it while on the island, and you’ll be on Klein Curacao for the majority of the day.

If your phone battery dies quickly, a portable charger is great to have!

7: There Is No Cell Reception or WiFi

There is no cell reception or wifi on Klein Curacao, so it’s really a place to unwind and disconnect!

8: Most Tour Companies Provide Lunch

Most tour companies will provide lunch while on Klein Curacao, either in their beach structures or onboard their catamarans or boats. If you’re vegetarian, make sure to check with the tour provider before your trip to make sure they have food options for you.

Hi Magdalena! Klein Curaçao really did feel like paradise. Most of the boat trips are a full day. They leave the dock in Curaçao between 6am-8m, and return around 3pm or 4pm. That gives you between 4-6 hours on the island (depending on your tour group.) With 4 hours you’ll be able to explore the island, see the lighthouse, the shipwreck, go snorkeling and have some time left over for lunch and relaxing!

I have had some dreadful experiences when just booking with the first company I see! I’ve also been stuck with vegetarian options so this is a great extra tip!! Is there a budget alternative to the recommended excursions? 100+ euros for 4-5 net beach hours is too much (lunch and sail “happy” times doesn’t really excite me). That doesn’t mean i am not gonna do it, but under those conditions i could only do it once. Looking for something like a water taxi service, a local boatman to hire… Any suggestions?

Hi Kostas, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, every tour/boat service I found (after doing a lot of research on different companies) was around $100. Due to the distance of Klein Curaçao from Curaçao, and the fact that the water can be rough, not every size boat tends to make the trip. Because of this, it’s generally just tour services, and not locals with boats, that offer these excursions. That’s not to say you won’t find a local to take you, but I did not see any locals offering these types of trips while I was in Curaçao. Additionally, there are no public bathrooms on Klein Curaçao, so I would advise to go with a company that at least has a bathroom on board the boat/some shade for the rides – that’s just my preference though. I’m linking Klein Curaçaos tourism website here , and they also show that the cheapest tour is around $85-$95. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Of course! So glad you found it helpful. For a car, I recommend picking one up at the airport so you can save on a taxi fare into town/to your hotel. A quick search is showing me daily rates as low as $43 in January – and I paid around $35ish per day in March. I’ve had good experiences with Hertz and Sixt, but there are a bunch of rental agencies to choose from. Merry Christmas to you too!

Ver weg van de drukte van Punda en Otrobanda op Curaçao, ligt een eiland met witte zandstranden , kristalhelder water, een schitterend koraalrif dat bewoond wordt door oogverblindende flora en fauna, een waar mekka voor duikers, snorkelaars en zonaanbidders .

Klein Curaçao ligt zo'n 25 kilometer van het zuidoostelijke puntje van het "grote" Curaçao, twee uur varen vanaf Spanish Water. De Mermaid , een stevig en zeewaardig schip, ligt op u te wachten aan de kade van de Fisherman's Pier , en vaart elke maandag, dinsdag, woensdag, donderdag, vrijdag en zondag ochtend om 6:45 . Zes keer per week neemt de Mermaid gasten mee naar Klein Curaçao voor een onvergetelijke dag.

Wanneer u aan boord gaat van de Mermaid, wacht u de hartelijke ontvangst van Kapitein Kees met een kopje thee of koffie. De sfeer aan boord is prima en u zult zich direct thuis voelen.

Als de Mermaid uitvaart, zet het schip koers langs de onherbergzame zuidkust van Curaçao, waar Fuik, Duivelsklip en Oostpunt deel uitmaken van een wildreservaat. Eenmaal voor anker, oefent het turquoise gekleurde, kristalheldere water een onweerstaanbare aantrekkingskracht uit en neemt iedereen die wil een duik. Een wandeling langs het strand of naar de historische vuurtoren. Mooie schelpen zoeken langs de branding of gewoon lekker in een comfortabele strandstoel genieten van de zon.

De Mermaid heeft als enige een echt strandhuis op Klein Curaçao . Met een overdekte patio met picknick tafels en gekoelde drankjes zit je er heerlijk uit de zon. De toiletten zijn keurig en goed onderhouden. De Mermaid biedt alle faciliteiten die u nodig heeft voor een onvergetelijke dag aan het strand.

Tussen de middag wacht een uitstekend buffet waar u zich te goed kunt doen aan perfect geprepareerde kip, spare rib en burgers, salades en fruit. Er is bier, wijn, vruchtensappen en frisdrank (alcoholische dranken tegen een kleine vergoeding).

Voor snorkelaars en duikers heeft Klein Curaçao veel te bieden. Klein Curaçao heeft prachtige koraalformaties, een verticale drop-off en een paar onderwatergrotten. Voor snorkelaars stelt Mermaid gratis maskers ter beschikking, zodat u zelf onze prachtige onderwaterwereld kunt ervaren. Tenants forced to pay rent for uninhabitable Gold Coast homes after asbestos exposure

A group of Gold Coast residents are "living a nightmare" after being forced out of their homes having been exposed to asbestos from a neighbouring property.

Mark Rayner and his flatmate have moved three times in the past three weeks and there is no end in sight with another move scheduled at the end of the week.

He is one of several Mermaid Beach tenants displaced after the house next door to their Peerless Avenue unit complex had its asbestos roof pressure-washed by property maintenance company STO Group Australia on April 8.

"I'm not sleeping I'm so stressed," Mr Rayner said.

"Just not knowing what is going on and then there's also our health because it's an asbestos-related issue.

"It looked like a crime scene at the beginning; there were guys in orange suits and black and yellow tape all around the place."

Mr Rayner said the potentially cancer-causing dust came through his unit window and covered his balcony, contaminating the property and his belongings.

It is estimated that 4,000 Australians die each year from asbestos-related diseases. 

Site not safe yet

The contamination was only picked up when a plumber visited the site and Mr Rayner reported the incident to WorkSafe Queensland on April 12.

A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokesperson said the organisation was investigating the incident and tenants would be allowed back once it was safe.

"Once the [licensed removal] contractor deems the area safe for return, residents will be informed," the spokesperson said.

STO Group Australia is paying for the decontamination, clean-up and relocation of the affected renters in the surrounding properties.

However, Mr Rayner said he had no certainty on where he would be living.

"We've been moved several times and they haven't put us in suitable accommodation, not like-for-like," he said.

At least five units in the complexes on either side had been affected and Mr Rayner said tenants were being moved into different temporary accommodation every week. 

Mr Rayner said the aftermath had been a nightmare.

"Not just for me, lots of the other tenants too — we're all pretty much suffering from having to be moved constantly."

At one location he had to share a room with his flatmate and live without kitchen facilities, he said.

Company responds

In a statement, STO Group said it apologised for the inconvenience to tenants and it would comply with WorkSafe's investigation.

"We have arranged and covered the cost of people's alternative accommodation, the cost of remediation work, and offered to reimburse people for the cost of replacing items of personal property which could not be decontaminated," the statement said.

Residents, however, said attempts to contact the company to discuss the situation had been unsuccessful.

Displaced resident Jay Walton said he was more than $1,000 out of pocket due to travel costs and essentials as he continued to move his family of three from temporary accommodation.

"I feel like I've been treated as a second-rate citizen and my family's safety and comfort hasn't been thought about at all," he said.

"Like we've been directly put in … contaminated by asbestos which is a poisonous product and it's somebody else's problem. Like it's all just dumped on us to deal with it.

"It takes until the day before we are meant to be figuring out where we are staying, at the final hour they'll email us."

Tenants must still pay rent

The residents are still being forced to pay rent in the contaminated building despite not living there.

A spokesman for Performance Realty, the agency that manages Mr Rayner's and Mr Walton's units, said tenants had the option of being released from their leases without penalty. 

The Gold Coast is second to Sydney  for having the highest rents in the country and is in the middle of a housing and rental shortage. 

The Rental Tenancy Authority said legally the tenants must still cover the rent.

There is still no timeline for the tenants to return to their homes.

A Gold Coast City Council spokesperson said public areas including the footpath around the affected properties were declared safe after decontamination on April 18.

Fines could be in the thousands

Griffith University dean of law Therese Wilson said fines imposed by courts for the mismanagement of asbestos could range from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars.

"Regardless of the law, I think this is really a situation where the most vulnerable people are bearing the brunt of a situation which is no fault of their own," she said.

"This is a situation where the contractor had some obligation to act more quickly and to ensure that the accommodation provided was more similar and appropriate to the accommodation from which these tenants have had to leave."
