So trug es sich zu, dass wir, die edlen Zenturien unter der AUTONOTIZEN-Flagge eines Tages den Streitwagen am Fahrbahn zu Stehen brachten. Just an jenem Fleck, an dem ein „Borneo“-Grün lackierter Lada Niva Travel feilgeboten wurde.

Wie jetzt? Niva? Heisst der Gelände-Lada nicht mittlerweile 4x4? Im Rahmen einer Kooperation mit General Motors versilberten die Russen einst ihren ikonischen Namen, was zum in Russland gebauten Chevrolet Niva führte. Der parallel weitergebaute Lada der ersten Generation hieß fortan 4x4. GM und Lada gehen seit längerer Zeit wieder getrennte Wege, der Name ist zurück. Lada Niva Legend heißt der moderne Klassiker. Die neue Generation, die so neu auch gar nicht mehr ist, hört auf die Bezeichnung Lada Niva Travel. Eben jener ließ 2020 ein Facelift über sich ergehen. Die neue Frontpartie steht selbstbewusster im Fahrtwind, der so arg schnell aber gar nicht dagegenbläst. Doch später mehr hierzu.

Nicht länger als Polo und Co.

Den Lada Niva Travel gibt es, im Gegensatz zum weiterhin angebotenen Lada Niva Legend, nur noch als Fünftürer. Mit einer Länge von 4,06 Metern ist er aber weiterhin sehr kompakt und liegt auf dem Niveau eines Kleinwagens. Das hilft vor allem beim Kraxeln in Wald und Dickicht. Aber auch im Stadtverkehr ist der Russe damit wendiger als viele SUV. Die keine Artgenossen sind, denn auch im neuen Kleid bleibt er ein waschechter Offroader.

Das technische Rüstzeug ist nämlich weitestgehend unverändert. Das gilt auch für den 1,7 Liter großen Benzinmotor mit vier Zylindern. Er leistet im Niva Travel 59 kw / 80 PS und damit drei Pferdestärken weniger als im Legend-Modell. Die Fahrleistungen sind entsprechend mehr Fahr als Leistung: 19 Sekunden gehen für den leichten Trab von null auf 100 km/h, die Höchstgeschwindigkeit liegt bei 140 km/h.

Beides konnten wir während der ersten Probefahrten mit einem Händlerauto nicht bis zum Exzess ausprobieren. Das gilt, auch mangels legaler Möglichkeit, für die Geländeeigenschaften. Also ging es entspannt über Landstraßen und durch Ortschaften.

Überraschend komfortabel gleitet man im Niva Travel dahin. Die Vorwarnungen, die den noch Niva-unbedarften Autor ereilten, sind zumindest in Bezug auf das neue Modell unbegründet. Die Sitze sind plüschig weich, das Fahrwerk unauffällig. Bis zur ersten Kurve. Die muss weder eng, noch das Auto schnell sein. Schon früh neigt sich der Russe zur Seite, die Schulter sucht den Kontakt zum Beifahrer.

Je nach Händler und Verfügbarkeit gibt es den Lada Niva Travel in verschiedenen Ausstattungslinien. „Comfort“ und „Luxe“ sind auch mit Offroad-Paket zu haben, das sich durch einen Luftschnorchel an der fahrerseitigen A-Säule, dunkle Felgen und spezielle Beplankungen auszeichnet. Unser Testwagen fuhr als Luxe vor. Dann bringt er auch ein Audiosystem mit Touchscreen ins Spiel. Hier lässt sich nicht nur die Navigation bedienen, sondern auch das Bild einer Rückfahrkamera betrachten. Moderne Zeiten also im Lada Niva, zu denen auch die LED-Rückleuchten zählen.

Die Materialqualität im Innenraum ist rustikal und pflegeleicht, wie es nicht anders zu erwarten war. Zumindest auf den ersten Blick und während der ersten Kilometer passt die Verarbeitung. In der Mittelkonsole fehlt der dritte Hebel, Verteilergetriebe und Geländeuntersetzung teilen sich jetzt einen Bedienstock.

Der 320 Liter große Kofferraum steckt hinter einer nach links öffnenden Tür. Bei Bedarf kann man nicht nur die Rücksitzlehnen, sondern auch deren Flächen umlegen. Dann entsteht ein einigermaßen ebener Laderaum für sperriges Gut. Sperrig ist auch die Verbrauchsangabe. Ein Wert von 12,3 Litern je 100 Kilometer steht im Prospekt. Das verwundert etwas, denn warum sollte der Niva Travel fast drei Liter mehr Benzin schlucken als der Niva Legend? Erfahrungsberichte von Niva-Fahrern können gerne eingereicht werden.

Die Preise des Lada Niva Travel beginnen bei etwa 18.000 Euro. Das Topmodell Luxe Offroad, das von Auto Hütter in Meiningen / Walldorf (danke sehr für das Ausleihen des Testwagens!) angeboten wird, soll dort 19.990 Euro kosten. Damit liegt der Lada Niiva Travel mit guter Ausstattung unter dem Suzuki Jimny Nutzfahrzeug. Beide eint ihr rustikaler Charakter und ihre Kompetenz im harten Arbeitseinsatz von Förstern, Jägern und auf Baustellen.

Die Ersatzteilversorgung für den Lada Niva Travel dürfte gesichert sein, da viele Teile des alten Niva passen und neues Zeug in Russland munter weitergebaut wird.

Am Ende der Geschichte sitzen wir zwar nicht feiernd mit der Dorfgemeinschaft ums Lagerfeuer. Trotzdem bleibt ein zufriedenes Grinsen auf dem Gesicht. Denn auch im modernen Kleid macht der Lada Niva Travel auf seine Art und Weise Spaß. Wer weiß, vielleicht geht es ja irgendwann nochmal gemeinsam auf Pfade abseits der Straße…

A more refined take on Lada’s classic, compact and uncomplicatedly capable Niva SUV line, the Niva Travel is a more comfortable, quiet and well equipped sister model to the better known classic Niva.

Complementing the 3-door Niva as a more modern and practical vehicle with 5-door utility and contemporarily rugged styling, the Niva Travel might lack some of the original and iconic Niva’s charms, but is by no means toned down or compromised in its extensive off-road abilities, and shares the same engine, drive-line and suspension design as the former.

A different take

Launched in 2021 by the now wholly Russian-owned and independent automaker Avtovaz/Lada, the rebranded and re-styled Niva Traval is in effect and evolution of the VAZ 2123 compact SUV first launched in 1998 and later marketed as the Chevrolet Niva as a joint venture collaboration with General Motors. Slotting in between 3- and 5-door versions of the classic Niva — now afforded the Legend moniker — the Niva Travel may share much of the same mechanicals, but distinctly differs in design from the uncluttered older model’s clean lines.

Different in design from the enduring Niva Legend and its beautifully proportioned and uncomplicatedly boxy design, the Niva Travel’s more modern styling themes include a big, wide and hungry trapezoidal grille flanked by slim, scowling and heavily browed headlights. It also employs trendy touches like more contoured and bulging surfacing, lower black cladding, black B- and C-pillars, stylised rear lights, and a more swept back windscreen. Its spare tyre is, meanwhile, repositioned from the Legend’s under bonnet location to external mounting on the side-swinging rear tailgate.

Compact and capable

Comparatively narrow and tall for manoeuvrability through off-road routes, the Niva Travel’s design, however, differs from more modern SUV in its low waistline and big glasshouse, which provides excellent road visibility for manoeuvring and accurately positioning it on- and off-road, and when parking. A compact 4.1-metre long mountain goat style off-roader, the Niva Travel rides high at 220mm above the ground and features short 749mm front and rear overhangs, which allows it generous off-road angles and the ability to transverse rough and inhospitable terrain.

Powered by a marginally detuned version of Lada’s familiar, long-running and uncomplicated longitudinally-mounted 8-valve 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine, the Niva Travel develops 79BHP at 5,000rpm and 94lb/ft at 4,000rpm. Giving away just 3BHP and 1lb/ft, but gaining 200kg compared with the lighter Niva Legend, the bigger and better equipped and insulated 1,485kg Niva Travel is nevertheless only slightly slower. Accelerating 0.2-seconds later through 0-100km/h at 19-seconds, the Niva Travel is capable of a 140km/h maximum, and returns 10.2l/100km fuel economy on the combined cycle.

Reassuringly rugged

Little changed in headline statistics, the Niva Travel’s additional weight over the Legend is, however, more noticeable on the move and in how it feels slightly blunted and less responsive. Requiring one to hold gears to higher revs to build enough power and momentum before up-shifting on steeper inclines, one is tempted engage the Niva Travel’s low gear ratio range for more robust low speed performance for certain on-road circumstances and topographies. That said, the engine is nevertheless smooth and rewardingly linear in operation and character.

Driving its permanent four-wheel-drive system through a 5-speed manual gearbox, the Niva Travel offers plenty of traction for sure-footed off-road driving. Riding on front double wishbone and rugged live axle and coil spring rear suspension, the Niva Travel’s extensive off-road abilities also include long wheel travel to traverse big obstacles while maintaining ground contact, and a locking centre differential and low gear ratios for demanding inclines and low traction conditions. Fording 500mm through water, it can, meanwhile, be optionally fitted with a high A-pillar mounted intake snorkel.

Comfort and composure

A small manoeuvrable SUV with reassuring road holding, the Niva Travel is an authentic, yet, rugged off-roader with terrifically unexpected refinement. If anything, it is its very refinement that detracts from sort of loud, visceral and ultimately engaging charisma of the older, lighter Niva Legend. That said, the Niva Travel proved stable and settled on the road, soaking up imperfections with forgiving composure. Turning in tidily but leaning somewhat through corners owing to its comfortable suspension, the Niva Travel’s steering and braking were meanwhile accurate and natural in motion.

Quiet and comfortable, the Niva Travel’s cabin provides a high but supportive and ergonomic driving position with its user-friendly controls and terrific road visibility. Its gear lever motion is crisp, clear and satisfyingly precise, and clutch intuitively precise.

Well packaged despite a narrow and compact frame, it offers decent legroom and generous headroom at the rear, while luggage space is well sized. Finished with honest well-built materials, the Niva Travel is comparatively modern and well equipped, and features a powerful A/C and clever driver’s armrest that rotates to alternatively serve as a rear cupholder.

In Russia, every third resident has their own vehicle. At the beginning of 2021, 45 million passenger cars were registered in the country. Almost a third of these are made by the Russian car company LADA. Toyota is currently the second most popular brand, with over four million cars in the country— the RAV4 and Camry are the most popular models. Next come Hyundai and Kia with over two million cars each in the country.

Compared with the United States and most of Europe, where around two out of three residents have their own vehicle, the car market in Russia is still relatively open and continues to develop. Russia imposes rather large customs duties on imported cars in order to force international car companies to produce their vehicles inside the country. As a result, many foreign car manufactures have localized their production in Russia and in some cases even modified their car models to accommodate Russian road conditions and people's tastes.  

Russians prefer low-budget crossovers and sedans. Hatchbacks and station wagons are less common, and small electric cars are generally an unusual sight (there are just 11,000 electric cars in the country, and 9,000 of them are the Nissan Leaf). 

"Russians are not interested in hatchbacks because of the lack of association with a high position in society," says Alexey Kozhukhov, an automotive marketing expert. He notes that in the Soviet period, a long Volga sedan was considered a high-class car and a symbol of power, and that these associations have been passed on to subsequent generations. 

Manufacturers have created economy-class sedans and SUVs that are specifically catered to the Russian market. According to the Association of European Businesses , in the first half of 2021 around 45% of new cars sold were crossovers. 

Best selling cars in Russia in 2021

The simplest and cheapest car on the Russian market, the Granta is assembled at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti. Some typical customer reviews state that the car is “reliable and without problems” or that “I didn’t have big illusions and got what I expected.” A sedan without air conditioning costs 560,000 rubles ($7,800), and the LUXE version with a heated windshield, cruise control and an automatic transmission costs 780,000 rubles ($11,000). 

2. Lada Vesta

Lada’s latest model, the Vesta, is designed to be a sedan and crossover, although there is also a sports version. The car meets most consumers’ needs but is cheaper than foreign brands. “When I bought it, I understood that it was AvtoVAZ and there might be problems ahead, but the desire to buy this beauty simply prevailed, and I only wanted a new car in this budget,” one Russian driver writes , adding that he didn’t want to buy a used car. 

The simplest model with a manual transmission, air conditioning and airbags sells for 795,000 rubles ($11,200), while the most expensive “Sport” version costs 1.2 million rubles ($17,000).

3. Hyundai Creta

This crossover is one of the most inexpensive cars in its class in Russia. Its price ranges from 1.2 million rubles ($17,000) to about 2 million rubles for the top version ($28,000). “Many Creta owners with a 1.6-liter engine complain about the sluggish dynamics. I wasn't looking for a racing car, so the car is fine for me. My priority was AWD, which fully justified itself. Now I can go to nature any time and not worry about getting stuck on a dirt road,” writes one driver from the Urals. 

Hyundai also was also the first car manufacturer in Russia to offer online sales directly from the factory without the dealer.

4. Hyundai Solaris

The Solaris is a version of the Accent that was localized specifically for Russia in 2010 and is produced in St. Petersburg. Russian drivers seem quite satisfied with the model, which is a budget sedan that is resistant to temperature changes and harsh weather conditions and is generally reliable. “I wanted to use it for at least five years without looking under the hood,” wrote one driver about why he chose this model. 

The Solaris ranges in price from 890,000 rubles ($12,500) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300) for the top configuration.

5. KIA Rio

The KIA Rio has also been produced in St. Petersburg since 2011, and, like the Solaris, only comes in a sedan model, which is more popular among local customers. The design and technical characteristics of the Russian Rio are slightly different from versions sold in other countries. Many drivers note that it has good heating and the ability to start at minus 30 Celsius. As a result, the car has become one of the best-selling models in the country. It ranges in cost from 950,000 ($13,400) to 1.3 million rubles ($18,300)

6. Volkswagen Polo

All Polo models sold in Europe are hatchbacks, but in Russia Volkswagen opted to modify this legendary model to produce what has become one of the most popular sedans in Russia. “The car is a car. The trunk is huge and comfortable. There is quite a lot of space in the cabin, both in front and behind. The driving is not bad, better than other cars of this class,” writes one owner. 

The Polo Sedan is assembled at a factory in Kaluga (about 200 km from Moscow). The cheapest model costs 1 million ($14,100), while the most expensive version goes for 1.9 mln rubles ($26,800). 

7. Lada Niva

The first Soviet SUV is still in production and has a loyal customer base for its combination of being extremely cheap and strong for off-road driving. Many Russians use it to get to their remote dachas. 

The simplest version costs 660,000 rubles ($9,300). The most expensive version is called the Niva Travel (formerly the Chevrolet Niva), costs 993,000 rubles ($14,000) and is equipped with a snorkel in case the car is overtaken by water in severe road conditions. And there is no automatic transmission! “Its passion is dirt roads, super suspension, it ‘swallows’ holes in the roads, you don't notice irregularities,” wrote a driver from the Amur Region in the Far East. However, customers note that the interior is not particularly comfortable and that the car consumes a lot of fuel.

8. Škoda Rapid PA II

This is another economy class sedan that has won the hearts of many Russian drivers. “The new Rapid is comfortable to drive, there is a lot of automation,” says one owner from St. Petersburg. They go on to write : “Turn the steering wheel and hit the gas, and switch on cruise control on a high-way, and the car will do everything else by itself.” 

The Škoda Rapid is assembled at a plant in Kaluga. The simplest version costs 990,000 rubles ($14,000) and already includes a media system with a touch screen and Bluetooth. The most expensive version costs 1.4 million rubles ($19,700).

9. Renault Duster

Renault cars are assembled in Moscow. For a long time, the most popular Renault model was the Logan sedan, but this year the Duster SUV took that title. "Who can imagine a life that is no longer just being in a hurry," one driver jokes about driving the car. "The Duster is a family car. The car is enough to cheerfully stay in traffic" writes another.

The price of the simplest model with a manual transmission starts at 1 million rubles ($14,300), while the most expensive 4x4 version is twice as much.

10. Lada Largus VP

The only wagon model in this list is also produced by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. Largus is a fairly budget car that is popular not only among dacha enthusiasts, but also for commercial purposes. “The main plus is the suspension and stability on the road,” writes a driver from Tyumen (Siberia), “No need to worry about driving the highway on Largus in winter.” All versions are equipped with a manual transmission and cost from 780,000 ($11,000) to 978,000 rubles ($13,700).

That's not even the biggest thing that I am concerned about. What I am concerned about is its larger displacement engine making less power despite being Lada's first SUV design in about 45 years.

It is heavier and it has the same archaic 1,7l engine from 70-s.

And that's a shame. This car have a potential, it just needs modern engine and gearbox.
