Living in a Learning Community - Fitting into the Community

I’m not your typical Indiana-raised Boilermaker. I was born in Traverse City and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, about a 3.5-hour drive along Lake Michigan. So, when I considered college options and considered Purdue, finding community early on was important to me.

While I weighed college options, I evaluated a lot of schools based on my interest in business, law, and information systems. My family has a history of work in law and information technology, and while I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to study, those fields interested me. Looking into Purdue, I was drawn to the Daniels School of Business, which offered studies in all three of my interests!

I was confident I wanted to spend the next four years in West Lafayette, but I was a little nervous about how I would find community and get involved early on. As I wrapped up my time in high school, I realized I felt very connected due in part to the clubs, groups and teams that I was a part of. I wanted to make sure I created the same feeling at Purdue – a place far from home and much bigger than my high school.

One of the scariest unknowns of starting college was my living situation – which residence hall would I be placed into? How would I find a roommate? Would I go random – having one chosen for me - or try to find one before the year started?

Discovering Learning Communities

My questions were answered when I heard about a unique living opportunity through Purdue’s Brock-Wilson Center for Women in Business club during Admitted Student’s Day at Purdue. The Women in Business Learning Community offered a chance to live with other first-year students in the business school while growing in academic, professional, and social capacities. After hearing more details about the program, my mom urged me to research more about it when we got home. Looking more into the learning community, I really liked the idea of having immediate friendships as soon as I arrived on campus. I wouldn’t have to worry about the mad scramble to find community, and it would allow me to get involved immediately – a huge priority of mine.

I decided to apply for the learning community and hopefully have a secure place to live. I was a little anxious about the whole process – what if I didn’t get in? The doubts came and went, but I was confident I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. Finally, I received an email congratulating me on being accepted into the new Women in Business learning community class! I was both relieved and excited to start this new chapter, and knowing where I was living made me a lot less stressed about my college transition.

When it came time to arrive on campus, The Brock-Wilson Center for Women in Business was incredibly helpful by making me feel welcomed and known from the start. During move-in week, the new members took a walk around campus and could bond over academics, interests, and shared experiences immediately. After we returned to our residence hall, Meredith South, the entire learning community decided to continue getting to know each other and spent hours talking about everything from our first semester of classes to what made us most nervous about starting college.

Building Connections

Being far from home, one of my biggest obstacles was preparing myself for the first semester of college classes. I was away from the comfort of home and now had to navigate a new academic landscape, too. My learning community peer mentor met me in these concerns. While our relationship was built into The Brock-Wilson Center, we developed a strong friendship where I could confide in her and learn to take advantage of opportunities as a freshman. This was another huge help as I adjusted to college, and having a mentor like Caitlyn allowed me to step out of my comfort zone quickly and try many new things I would never have done in high school.

 One of the first things I got involved in during my first semester was the Brock-Wilson Center (BWC) for Women. My mentor was in the organization, so she helped me get involved and meet people. Since being introduced, I have dived into BWC and furthered my involvement as an Ambassador on the Alumni and Marketing Committee!

After getting involved on campus with BWC, I wanted to do more. One of the biggest benefits of my learning community is seeing all the amazing things my peers are doing on campus, which motivates me to make the most of my time, too! Since the start of my first semester, I’ve become a member of Larsen Leaders Academy, the Doster Leadership Conference Board, the School of Business Career Council, and even receiving mentorship through Purdue Alumni Student Experience (PASE). Without my mentor’s initial push through The Brock-Wilson Center for Women in Business, I wouldn’t have known where to begin.

Enjoying Extemporaneous Experiences

My learning community experience hasn’t been all professional and academic, though. One of my favorite parts about living in my learning community is being able to bond with other girls on my floor! I love the fun, stress-relieving activities we put on, like our book club – which isn’t for class or professional development but provides an outlet for us to bond and be with each other.

There’s also nothing like creating lifelong memories through laughter and last-minute work. One day, a bunch of us gathered in one of our friend’s rooms, all preparing for a project due the next day. Ideas were hard to come by, and we spent most of the day laughing and chatting about life – before cranking out the assignment in the nick of time. It’s really special to create lasting memories with people you enjoy spending time with, and it makes the stress of school and life much easier to manage.

On top of everything else, maybe the greatest benefit of being in the Women in Business learning community was meeting my best friend. By spending so much time with these women, I got to know her really well, and we clicked super fast. Walking to class each day together feels like a full-circle moment from when our group took our first walk around campus back in August.

Building Strong Relationships

While I know that challenges will continue to arise in college – I’ll take difficult classes, have bad days, and feel overwhelmed by my workload – I feel much better knowing I have a group of women I can rely on.

Whether sitting in our study room figuring out an economics problem or dealing with the stress of balancing commitments, I know there are other people I can trust who are going through the same things. I know that my learning community will continue to uplift me, help hone my work ethic, and be more intentional and authentic. I want to share this welcome and personal growth with others. Whether you’ve considered joining a learning community or not, I encourage you to take the leap and join! Beyond the helpful academic and professional resources, you’ll gain an immediate community of caring people to journey with and make a big school feel much smaller.

Even as an out-of-stater, Purdue now feels like home.

Madison Montgomery is a freshman at Purdue studying Business Management with a concentration in Information Systems Management. As a student, Madison is involved with the Women in Business Learning Community, Larsen Leaders Academy, and PACE. She also serves as Delta Gamma Director of Alumni Relations, the Brock-Wilson Center Ambassador on the Alumni and Marketing Committee, the School of Business Council Director of Programming and Development, and as a member of the Doster Executive Board.

What To Know About Michigan Learning Communities - Part One

Learn about the many options at U-M.

Michigan Learning Communities (MLCs) are diverse groups of students and faculty drawn together by shared goals and common intellectual interests. They combine the personal attention of a small college environment with the unparalleled resources of a large research university. In this two-part mini blog series, MLC students will share some highlights of their personal experiences.

For incoming students, students who  apply for an MLC by the early deadline of April 7 at 11:59 p.m. EDT will know their status by April 17. Otherwise, all applications are due at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, May 6!

Ashlyn Perry (Michigan Community Scholars Program)

When I chose to come to the University of Michigan, I knew that I wanted to be intentional about the academic and social communities with which I surrounded myself. As an out-of-state student, I did not have any family members or high school friends in the area who I could turn to if I needed support. I also knew that forming relationships with others who shared similar academic and personal interests would be crucial to finding a sense of belonging when I got to campus. As I began looking for opportunities to connect with other first-years and upperclassmen, I came across the Michigan Learning Community (MLC) applications and began reading through the different opportunities that each community offered. I was unsure about applying and nervous about the additional commitments I would have when I got to campus.

However, I can easily say that applying to an MLC was one of the best decisions I made entering U-M. Being in an MLC offered myself and the other students the chance to get to know one another as soon as we got to campus. Through the intentional programming and service opportunities that were offered to me beginning on move-in day, I began to know my hallmates, peer-mentors, resident advisors (RAs), and other staff members. Knowing what resources I had available to me and how to access them immediately provided me with a sense of comfort despite the new sense of independence and responsibility that I felt moving to college far from home.

The Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP) stood out to me, as volunteerism and community service were integral parts of my high school experience. I felt that the experience I could have in MCSP would not only complement my pre-health coursework, but also allow me to grow as an advocate and individual overall. Another factor that stood out to me was MCSP’s engagement in the local Ann Arbor community. Throughout my first year here, I have volunteered with organizations such as Therapeutic Riding, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Mercy House, Community Action Network (CANS), and other groups. The other MCSP students and mentors with whom I have served have since become some of my closest friends. 

MCSP also regularly puts on events with the Intergroup Relations Council (IRC) and Programming Board (PBU). I have engaged in really meaningful dialogues with other MCSPeers and explored a variety of social justice topics, both of which have shaped my perspectives and allowed me to learn more about myself and others. On the MCSP floor and around West Quad, I have had the chance to participate in a variety of wellness events. Topics range from mental and physical wellness to financial wellness and other areas of interest. Having space to reflect on my academic and extracurricular involvements and integrate aspects of wellness into my college life has been very beneficial.

Looking back, I am very grateful that my pre-college self decided to take the risk and apply to an MLC. Regardless of what communities you are excited to be a part of on campus, I hope that you too feel the same excitement and pride that I feel as a student in MCSP! Go Blue!

Saran Nimmagadda (Honors Program) 

College. A six-letter word for possibly the most transformative, overwhelming, exciting experience many embark on in their lives. This is especially true for the University of Michigan, a gloriously vast and diverse campus filled with unique and innovative ideas, individuals, and experiences. However, it is so exceedingly easy to be swept away by the sheer magnitude of what the journey of college entails, while feeling like another fish in the sea, another student fighting for a spot on the blue bus, another teary individual leaving an exam hall. So, how can we shorten and rewrite the scary, six-monomer word “college” into something a bit more digestible and comfortable? MLCs. Short for Michigan Learning Communities, these amazing programs truly are just that: a community – like the  LSA Honors Program that I’m part of.

Coming from a small high school with a graduating class of fifty students, a majority of my educational career up till college had centered around this idea of a core group of individuals whom I learned with and learned from. Therefore, transitioning into such a large academic setting left me without this sense of support. Every day, I yearned to at least see one person I recognized, who also recognized me in these large hundred-student STEM lectures. This was when the concept of an MLC was introduced to me. Many Michigan Learning Communities are limited to a few hundred students and are composed of individuals passionate about a topic or even a range of ideas. Students in these communities often take similar classes simply due to their shared interest in a topic. For example, the Health Science Scholars Program unites students specifically passionate about healthcare who might take similar STEM or public health classes together.

These Michigan Learning Communities, as clearly stated in their name, hope to foster a sense of companionship and camaraderie – or in other words, a home within a home for students to fall back on and understand that they are not alone in their journey through college. Through these programs, I finally found my core, my support system, and my community. We would often cry over organic chemistry homework, ponder the meaning of life and our role in the universe, run to the nearest 7-11 for sweet treats, and take a long walk through the Law Quad to wrap up the night, all with a group of people who I knew would be saving me a seat in our 8 a.m., would buy me an energy drink because they knew I had an exam the next day, or would be by my side as we pulled another all-nighter. In this way the MLCs combine the two most important aspects of academics, the “learning” and the “community,” by acting as a catalyst for these social interactions between students who can explore their diverse interests while simultaneously creating lasting relationships.

Michigan State Hosting Top In-State 2025 Linebacker

Michigan State has hit the midway point of spring practice, and the Spartans hosted one of their top in-state targets today in East Lansing.

Three-star Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's linebacker Charles White was on campus today to take in Michigan State's eighth spring practice and get a feel on how head coach Jonathan Smith and defensive coordinator Joe Rossi operate up close. Offered by MSU back in early December, White already has an official visit with the Spartans scheduled for this summer (June 7).

At 6-foot-3 and 190-pounds, White is considered the No. 540 overall player, No. 61 linebacker and No. 10 player from the state of Michigan in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings . The St. Mary's High School standout is also the highest-rated linebacker in the state for this cycle.

White has garnered 10 offers from Power 5 programs, and several others from smaller schools. His Power 5 offers include Penn State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Boston College, Kansas, Purdue, West Virginia and Rutgers. Currently, 247Sports has MSU, Boston College and Kansas as the "warmest" teams in White's recruitment, as he's also scheduled to officially visit the Eagles (May 31) and the Jayhawks (June 14).

Rossi, who came to Michigan State after spending the last four seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Minnesota, is MSU's primary recruiter in the battle for White. During the 2024 recruiting cycle, Rossi was able to flip four-star Gaylord (Mich.) linebacker Brady Pretzlaff, a Top 500 prospect, from the Gophers to the Spartans. Now, Rossi is back to work looking to land the state of Michigan's top 2025 linebacker in White.

Michigan State is still looking for its first commitment in the 2025 class, but the Spartans have made some headway in recent weeks with a pair of targets. The Spartans were included in three-star Nashville (Tenn.) Ensworth linebacker Sam Haley's Top 8 on Tuesday, and also made the Top 8 for three-star University of Detroit (Mich.) Jesuit athlete Elijah Dotson, who projects as a defensive back at the collegiate level.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spartan Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.

LMC offering Red Hawks Rise Summer Bridge Program

Lake Michigan College is offering its Red Hawks Rise Summer Bridge Program to help 2024 graduating high school seniors and other incoming students prepare for the demands of college life.

The free, immersive, 12-day, non-residential program provides students with college readiness guidance, assessment, career exploration, and math, reading, and writing instruction.

"Red Hawks Rise is a fun, interactive program to assist first-time college students making the transition to college," said Beth Lehner, Lake Michigan College Life Skills Faculty and Red Hawks Rise Co-Coordinator. "Students will participate in introductory college knowledge sessions, explore career options through mini-tours, and become comfortable with admissions and financial aid. A breakfast buffet is provided daily, and students will have a head start getting to know LMC faculty, staff, and other incoming students."

The three-week program, funded by the state of Michigan through the Michigan Community College Association, takes place 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 10-27, or August 5-22 on Lake Michigan College's Benton Harbor Campus, 2755 E. Napier Ave., or 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, June 18-July 12 at the Allegan County Area Technical & Education Center, 2891 116th Ave., Allegan. There will be no classes the week of July 4.

Students will:

• Learn success strategies in an inclusive and supportive environment.
• Improve study, time management, goal setting, and test-taking strategies.
• Build confidence in math, reading, and writing skills by taking an in-depth placement assessment for college-level math and English classes.
• Meet with financial aid staff, mentors, and advisors before classes begin.
• Receive guidance in career and vocational opportunities.
• Meet other new students and learn how to navigate life on campus.

"Not every student is equally prepared for college after high school, particularly after the school changes and interruptions during Covid," Lehner said. "Red Hawks Rise is meant for students who want help being prepared to succeed in college."

Red Hawks Rise is entirely free, with no tuition or textbook costs. Transportation aid to and from campus or gas gift cards are also available.

"Every student who completes the program will receive a free laptop computer, backpack, school supplies, and LMC swag," Lehner said. "Red Hawks Rise is meant to give students a true launching pad to start college."

To register, students must complete the free online application at lakemichigancollege.edu/rise by May 20. Space is limited. Students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Once registered, students will receive confirmation from a program coordinator with further information.  

This year, students can take their first college English course tuition-free before they begin the Fall semester. Students should show their interest on the Red Hawks Rise registration form to be invited to either English 101 or English 099A and English 101 during LMC's 10-week Summer term. Participants must attend both the English class(es) and the Red Hawks Rise program to be eligible for free tuition. Students who take advantage of this opportunity must enroll in the August session on the Benton Harbor Campus.
