Then I ordered samples to test those recommendations out for myself, placing products inside and playing around with how they’d fit into various compartments. It gives you back some counter space and it ensures your stuff won’t be sitting in water all day. Surprisingly, few of the travelers we spoke to prioritized compartments within the Dopp kit as something they were looking for. While they are a bonus, “you don’t need a lot of zippers, pockets, and compartments,” Peter Hunsinger, the co-founder of sock brand Kane 11 , says. He prefers something easy to open that allows you to see everything. Our experts were above all concerned with the size of the kit. Most of the cases below have room for your skin-care routine and travel-size toiletries, but there are a few ten-liter Dopp kits that appear on our list, which are large enough to hold a compact blow-dryer or clippers. While the latter may take up more room for those who travel light, the size is ideal for those who can’t travel without taking a chunk of their bathroom. Every bag on this list is made from a fabric flexible enough to squish into an already stuffed suitcase or weekender, so the larger size shouldn’t be a problem.

Speaking of material, that seems to be the most important thing to consider when buying a Dopp kit. Something durable, easy to clean, and water resistant is what you want to look for. You’ll find that many are made from nylon, which is wipeable in case of spills. It won’t be ruined by sitting on a wet countertop. Leather, silicone, and canvas have these qualities as well, the latter of which is another popular option among our experts. The thick material is durable and affordable, and it can look more distinguished than other common Dopp kit materials. Like the other fabrics, they can be wiped or spot-cleaned. The material on the inside is just as important. It should be easy to clean and waterproof or resistant as well. For that, nylon or canvas is the way to go.

The last thing to consider is how easy it is to get to your products, which is easiest with a Dopp kit that unzips all the way around to lie flat. This is guaranteed with hanging bags, while with others it’s a toss-up. Each of the options below either unzips fully or has a wide mouth.

It’s also water-resistant on both the interior and exterior, and when you open it up, you’ll find it unzips fully so you can see everything inside. It has a hidden hook for hanging and while compact when zipped up, still manages to fit all your necessities. On the outside, there are front and back pockets as well as an exterior toothbrush holder. Inside, there are two zippered pockets and elastic organizers for your toiletry bottles. I also like that it has YKK zippers and an antimicrobial coating on the liner.

Best (less expensive) hanging toiletry bag

Hanger type: Hook | Size: | Material: Polyester | Access: Wide opening

For less than half the price of the Aer bag, you can get this one by Muji. Compared to the Aer, it’s significantly smaller and made from a cheaper material, polyester. But it doesn’t feel flimsy, and when I placed travel-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner inside (Muji’s own reusable toiletry bottles are obviously very compatible, but others work too), they were well-secured. A toothbrush fits easily, but you’ll have to place it horizontally. While the fabric might not be as nice as ballistic nylon, it’s still very resilient and quick-drying. And honestly, I find that larger Dopp kits can sometimes just encourage overpacking of bulky tools and products. This Muji case is the bag Greene said made him feel “grown,” with its garment-bag-style hanging option. Inside, there are two zippered pockets and four elastic holders for bottles or grooming tools. Then there’s another zippered pocket on the front of the bag, plus another slip pocket on the back.

Best extra-large toiletry bag

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 10L | Material: Polyester ripstop | Access: Wide opening

Sometimes you have to think outside the box to find the best solution to your problem. Bags that aren’t technically Dopp kits, such as this Patagonia packing cube , might actually be the best thing for storing your toiletries. Like the rest of the brand’s products, it’s built for the outdoors. Matt Kays, a senior vice-president at PR Consulting, relies on this Patagonia number for its ripstop, practically indestructible exterior. He actually has two: He uses one as a Dopp kit for travel and the other as a wet bag to hold his things when he goes to the beach, so you know the water resistance is serious. This packing cube doesn’t have many compartments, which Hunsinger actually appreciates. It unzips to lie flat and opens like a hard-shell suitcase: Both sides are separated by a mesh zippered partition. One side alone can hold a pair of shoes, so you’d easily be able to stuff all your grooming products as well as clippers or a travel blow-dryer in here if you needed to. This bag has both a top handle and a daisy chain for clipping it to something else or hanging it from a hook.

Best (less expensive) extra-large toiletry bag

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 10 L | Material: Nylon | Access: Wide opening

This is another packing cube turned Dopp kit. But here, you get the same-size bag for half the cost. Topo Designs makes a specific, triangular-shaped toiletry bag, but barber Mark Miguez, of New York City’s Friend of a Barber , prefers its ten-liter packing cube because it lies flat, adding that he has used “so many Dopp kits for work” and that this is the one he has been happiest with. It’s cheaper than the Topo Designs Dopp kit. It’s made from  400D nylon , which has great abrasion resistance, water resistance, and tear strength. It has a U-shaped opening, so it lies flat, and you can easily toss in and retrieve your products. It has a nice loop handle, which makes it easy to hang in places without counter-height surfaces. There are no compartments inside, so you’ll want to make sure your toiletry caps are screwed on tight and not breakable, as there’s nothing to hold them in place.

Best mini toiletry bag

Hanger type: Two carry loops | Size: 4 L | Material: Organic cotton and nylon | Access: Double zip opening

Photographer Johnathon Daniel Pryce ( @garconjon ) travels for weeks at a time, so he needs a toiletry kit that fit his essentials without being bulky. “I’ve owned this style for about six years now,” he says. “It’s gone around the world with me and it still looks brand new.” With a double zip, there’s easy access to your toiletries, and a removable nylon liner makes wiping clean any spills fuss-free. It’s also pleasing to look at, says Pryce, who also regularly takes the bag to both the beach and the gym.

Best waterproof toiletry bag

Hanger type: No carry loop | Size: 5.9 L | Material: Silicone | Access: Average opening

Tooletries makes waterproof silicone accessories that suction to your shower wall, making your grooming tools accessible and the whole experience more streamlined. It has thought of everything from a soap holder to a beer holder to a shower mirror and has brought its technology outside the shower with this silicone Dopp kit. Its waterproof, leather-looking, antibacterial silicone is what Kyle Bergman, former senior merchant at Birchbox and founder of Swoveralls, loves most about the bag, saying it’s “leakproof and essentially stain-resistant,” as well as “very easy to clean.” It doesn’t have as much of a handle as some others, but based on the product images, the loop seems to have been designed to be big enough to fit a finger through, though using it with a carabiner to hook on to another bag might be more comfortable. It’s a medium-size bag compared to the other Dopp kits on this list, but Bergman was still impressed with the size: “It’s like an old-school Chevy Suburban inside with the amount of room it has for various products.” He didn’t mention the zipper or how easy it was to access products, but the opening is visibly smaller than others on this list. You’ll still be able to access your toiletries, but you might not be able to see them all at once.

Best toiletry bag with a waterproof compartment

Hanger type: Extra large carry loop | Size: 5 L | Material: Nylon canvas | Access: Wide opening

Dylan Raasch , senior design director at Nike , always travels for work with this toiletry bag from Herschel. “I’ve been on dozens of trips with it and it looks as new as the day I bought it. It’s easy to clean and seems to fit everything I need without having to dig around.” It doubles as a travel and storage item, where Raasch keeps his things organized so his partner can take up shelf space with her toiletries. The bag is also a favorite of Strategist editor Maxine Builder. She says it has just the right amount of pockets — enough that everything has a space, but not so many that she forgets where she’s put something. She’s also a fan of the oversize hook, which has “proved to be really useful when I’m digging through a duffel bag .”

Best leather toiletry bag

Hanger type: Carry Loop | Size: 3.6 L | Material: Leather | Access: Wide opening

For a classic option, here’s the original Dopp model that gave these kits their name. Investment banker Tsz Hin Kwok says he has used his leather Dopp kit “pretty much daily” for the past few years because it’s longer than most other kits (but still portable). We reached out to Dopp, who told us that Kwok’s exact model is no longer in production, but pointed us towards this remarkably similar option. Like Kwok’s, the kit is also made from leather, which means it’s built to last and luxurious. At a length of 10.25, it’s great for oblong items like a hairbrush, or full-size tubes of toothpaste or hair gel if you’re checking a bag. The kit also has a flat bottom and a wide mouth like a vintage doctor’s bag, as well as a convenient carry loop.

Best luxury-leather toiletry bag

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 5.5 L | Material: Leather | Access: Wide opening

Given your Dopp kit will inevitably become smeared with toothpaste, it feels slightly wrong to recommend purchasing anything too extravagant. But if you are prepared to make more of an investment, this leather kit is a worthwhile splurge. It’s good-looking but not too precious to get dirty. The outside wipes clean anyway, and the inside lining is water resistant in case of leaks or spills. These double zippered pockets are equal in size, adding to the “structural” design that made Gray attracted to it. (And it looks a lot like the $1,790 Tom Ford bag the Points Guy recommended to us but comes at a fraction of the cost. ) It’s perfect for overpackers, traveling with a partner, or just separating your a.m. and p.m. routines. As Gray says, “It just fits everything.” It has the extra-special touch of being customizable: You can choose between signature and premium leather, and if you purchase it from Leatherology, there is an option to monogram it for an additional $10 to $15. Malin went with a rose-gold monogram, but you can pick from 22-karat gold, silver, or other options.

Best flexible toiletry bag

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 3 L | Material: Coated nylon | Access: Wide opening

Thomas Pardee , brand director at Lupine Creative, likes this flexible toiletry bag that’s easy to squish into tight spaces in his suitcase. That’s not to say the bag is small. “The triangular shape is deceptively roomy,” Pardee says. It sits upright on any surface without tipping over, but in case of spills, its coated-nylon fabric is water resistant and easy to wipe clean. The kit also has a heavy-duty zipper with handy grab tabs to pull on, as well as a sturdy strap to loop over a hook.

Having the right Dopp kit (or wash bag or toiletry bag or cosmetic case) that suits your skincare and grooming regimen is a critical part of having an organized suitcase . And the number of options available out there means there’s something for everyone, regardless of style and budget. Some are fancy, some are small, others are waterproof. To help make sense of the Dopp kit marketplace, we canvassed some stylish, well-traveled guys to tell us about their favorites. May they help you get closer to finding the best men's toiletry bag for you.

How long I’ve been using it : Three months

Why I like it: I have been using a neoprene Dopp kit for a few years because the material is water resistant and stretches easily to fit all your products. My new one from Dagne Dover has a large main compartment for products and includes two smaller pouches that are easily removable to take back and forth to the bathroom (instead of the whole bag) or to pull out quickly for a security check at the airport. The top zipper also snaps down or expands depending on how much you pack, making the bag smaller or larger as needed.

What you’ll always find inside: I always pack the Aesop Parsley Seed facial cleanser ,  Malin & Goetz Sage styling cream , and the Marianella The Royal Kalahari face serum .

How long I’ve been using it:  20 years 

Why I like it:  This is an insanely durable product. I got it as a gift when I started traveling a lot for one of my first jobs out of school, so it’s definitely gone on at least a few hundred trips all over the world with me at this point—everywhere from Africa to Alaska . I haven’t exactly been gentle with it, but it still pretty much looks like new. It’s not the fanciest bag, and it’s pretty industrial in design, but the ballistic nylon material it’s made out of is the real deal. It dries out really quickly when stuff inside spills out, and as an added bonus, it has an antimicrobial lining inside so your products don't become moldy or smell. The thought of getting a new bag hasn’t even ever crossed my mind—I feel like I could go another 20 years with this bag.

What you’ll always find inside:  The bag has a great see-through mesh pocket on the inside of the flap where I always make sure to bring an extra pair of contact lenses every time I go away. You’ll also always find my  Dr. Grandel facial foam cleanser , because it’s really great at not stripping my face of moisture; my Iota Superplant body serum which is a super-healthy body moisturizer that isn’t as heavy-feeling as most lotions (that is essential for me otherwise my skin gets itchy); and my  Aesop Moroccan Neroli post-shave lotion which has a really nice scent and calms my face after shaving.

How long I’ve been using it:  About 15 years 

Why you like it: Although I have four to five other Louis Vuitton Dopp kits, this one is my favorite because it’s the oldest and has so much character—most notably the beautiful patina that has formed on the Vachetta leather. It’s also slightly smaller than the others and therefore forces me to edit items down to only the essentials. And you can never go wrong with LV’s classic monogram. It’s elegant and timeless.

What you’ll always find inside:  When I’m traveling, I like to maintain a simple yet effective skincare routine.  La Mer Cleansing Foam ,  Creme de La Mer Moisturizer , and  La Mer Eye Concentrate always help get the job done.

Why I like it:  After a couple years of just using a Sabah shoe bag (a cotton drawstring bag) as my go-to Dopp kit, I finally splurged and bought a heavy-duty one from one of my favorite leather goods makers. Why I like it: A few years ago, on a flight out of Paris' Orly airport, security made me move everything that was in my overstuffed leather Dopp kit into one Ziploc bag. DD D&D Wanderlust Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag

Toiletry bags with hooks let you hang them on bathroom doors so they can stay dry, and allow you to easily see your grooming products. This one from D&D Wanderlust has received tons of five-star reviews for its compact design and easy-to-clean fabric.

"I use it every time I travel," says travel writer Nadia Podrabinek . "The hanging hook makes it easy to use when showering, or just storing my items in the bathroom." Though she did note that the zippers can get stuck sometimes, they're easy to open after a few tries.

Minimalist packers love this small-but-mighty toiletry bag, which has a waterproof nylon case that's hard to tear or rip. Dustin Sitar, CEO of The Groom Club , says this is the best dopp kit he's personally tested, and has been using it since January 2023. "It's great for outdoor excursions, and it's leakproof, so a broken cologne bottle won't affect the rest of your luggage," says Sitar.

Two of our travel experts recommended Vetelli's classic dopp kit, which has a leather build that can take stains and scratches and has a couple of inner mesh pouches for liquid containers. Larry Snider, VP of Operations at Casago CB Rentals, bought this toiletry bag in 2021, and has been using it for his monthly travels.

"It's incredibly functional since it has two large compartments," he says. "I use one for larger items like my shave kit and toothbrush, and I use the other one for smaller items like floss and nail clippers. It keeps everything organized, accessible, and secure." Though he did note that it takes up a good chunk of space in his carry-on luggage, so this may not be ideal if you're trying to travel light.

This small, under-$50 toiletry bag will hold all the essentials—which is great for those who want to travel light. We like this bag (1) for its simple minimalist design and (2) for its eco-friendly construction. There's also a removable pouch, which will make it easier to access the smaller things. Though at 2 L, some testers did not think this might not big enough for guys who like to pack a ton of grooming supplies.

Guys who pack for more rugged adventures, like camping, should go with a durable, affordable toiletry bag that can take a licking. Take this one from Tintao, which is an Amazon bestseller. Travel writer Ethan Williams bought this in 2019, and takes it to all his camping trips, since it can hold most of his grooming tools and larger toiletries without taking up too much room.

"The durable canvas material can withstand rough handling, and is easy to clean," he says. Though he says that the lack of inside pockets make organizing smaller items (like hand sanitizers) challenging.

Briggs & Riley Executive Essentials Toiletry Kit

Frequent fliers who like to take a bunch of grooming products with them praise this Briggs & Riley bag, which holds up to 5 L of gear. Travel writer Nick Burgess took this toiletry kit on more than 15 trips last year. "It's compact enough to slot into my carry-on, but strong enough to take the smushing when I'm cramming everything in my bag," he says.

"It also has the structure to sit on a self, as well as hook on the bathroom door." Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty, so you can replace it for free if it breaks down. One downside: it doesn't look great. "But if you don't care too much about the aesthetics, I'd highly recommend this," Burgess says.

The GORUCK Dopp Kit is more than just a toiletry bag . You can modify it for various uses, but we can’t help but wonder whether or not any of them are worthwhile additions to your pack-out. Is it a jack of all trades, or will we wish it had stuck with just one? Let’s dive in.

External Components

The primary material used here is CORDURA® nylon. Let’s be honest; it’s GORUCK. What did you expect? This bad boy is durable and water-resistant. That said, the materials stay wet for an extended period after water soaks into it. So, while it takes a while for water to seep into it, it takes a bit to dry once it has. This isn’t an issue for some uses, but a dopp kit will undoubtedly be in the bathroom at some point, where it might get wet. If this is your plan, we recommend leaving it out of harm’s way and only taking the items you need into the splash zone.

Additionally, the exterior materials pick up hair and dust fairly easily. Luckily, cleaning with tape or a lint roller is even easier.

The zippers are from YKK. They’re durable, and we haven’t had any issues with the main compartment opening. It isn’t an AquaGuard model, so it isn’t as water resistant, but we haven’t had any problems with liquids seeping in or out. If something were to spill, it would, though.

On the pack’s front face, there’s a hook-and-loop fastener where you can attach a patch to customize the pack. Ours came with a GORUCK patch with an American flag background, which is fun but probably not for everyone. Because of the hook-and-loop fastener, you can customize it with any patch you want.

On the backside, there’s a mess of PALS webbing for you to work with. There are two buttons here, too, so you can attach gear more easily. This webbing doesn’t get in your way if you don’t have MOLLE attachments to use with it, which we dig. It does add a significant amount of weight, though. That said, this thing already comes in at nearly a half pound, so it doesn’t hurt much in the scheme of things.

On the bottom, there’s a large piece of elastic that helps attach the pack to things. It’s stretchy and durable; plus, it hasn’t started to stretch out after repeated use, which is handy. Like the webbing, this doesn’t get in your way if you don’t want to use it. The material also adds traction on the bottom of the pouch, which is handy.

Overall, this thing looks sleek and solid. It will match other GORUCK gear you’ve got on hand, whether that’s a sling, daypack, or travel backpack. How will it fit inside the latter two, though?

Inside The Dopp Kit

On the inside, there’s nothing permanent. All of the internal organization can be changed using a hook-and-loop fastener. It comes with four inserts that you can stick inside to add segmentation. Without it, the pouch isn’t handy.

Before discussing each insert, let’s chat about the overall experience.

Essentially, they don’t fit very well. It takes a while to get them to slot in so the main compartment zipper can close, and even then, sometimes, they poke out slightly on the bottom. Part of the issue is that the hook-and-loop fastener is like a magnet. As you’re trying to line it up, it attaches securely without much effort. So you’re constantly trying to line it up and unstick the hook-and-loop fastener to find the perfect fit. If you can get the perfect fit, the inserts work well. If you plan to switch them often, it can be frustrating. You might eventually get the hang of changing them and setting them, but we haven’t so far in testing.

They would be significantly easier to work with if they were slightly smaller. Another issue is that the zippers on the inserts can be challenging to open. The materials are tight, and the zipper heads feel large for the job. Don’t misunderstand; they work, and you can use them; we only wish they didn’t get stuck so much.

Now that we’ve reviewed the inserts, let’s get into the specifics. Because there are four of them, you can use this pouch for almost anything.

Insert #1 has a singular mesh zippered pocket. This spot is good for passports, travel documents, cash, or other larger, flat items. Because of the mesh, you can see what you have stowed inside. This makes it more susceptible to the elements, but the exterior does an excellent job of protecting the inside from water. The mesh isn’t stretchy, but it is durable, and there’s a divider inside to help sort whatever you stow inside it.

Insert #2 is similar to the first iteration but is a standard nylon material instead of mesh. This makes it so you can’t see inside and offers extra protection from liquids. We dig this spot for storing your passport, travel documents, and extra cash if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t need to see your essential items every time you open your pouch. In theory, this is safer, as it’s not visible to anyone else either. That said, some travelers like to have eyes on the critical goods every step of the way, and the mesh is helpful for that. There’s a divider here, too.

Insert #3 is similar to a billfold travel wallet . You get both sides of the wallet, but you don’t have to fold it, which is neat. On the right are six slots for credit, debit, and ID cards. On the left, there’s a clear TPU window for an ID you want to show and another larger liner pocket for more cards or folded cash. On the top, there’s a large zippered pocket for items you don’t want loose in the main compartment. There’s no divider in this zippered pocket, unlike the first two.

Insert #4 has more general organization and can be used like a minimalist tech pouch . There are three liner pockets: one large, one small, and one medium. There are two elastic loops, one large and one small. The pockets are too tight for more oversized items. The elastic is stretchy and snappy, which we dig. However, we wish the pockets had more depth.

These inserts will work outside of the Dopp Kit, too. If you want to leave your important documents or cash in the safe, you can remove one and do that. Or, attach it to another daypack or travel backpack with a hook-and-loop fastener inside it.

Don’t worry; we didn’t forget. This is a dopp kit! How does it handle toiletries?

The two inserts with only one zippered pocket don’t work well for many toiletry purposes. If items have much depth, they’re hard to slide into the pocket. Flat items like bandaids do well, but we’re hard-pressed to fill one pocket with flat items like that while traveling and using this exclusively as a toiletry kit. Maybe as a combination dopp/emergency kit, but it is easier as a general use or tech pouch.

The insert with the loops is a little more handy, as you can slide in toiletry tools, like a toothbrush or comb. They’re designed like you’d see on a tech pouch, but they work okay for gear you’ll use in the bathroom.

The last insert doesn’t make sense for toiletries at all—that is unless you want to take your cash, identification, and money into the restroom with you. Jokes aside, this one wasn’t meant for use in a dopp kit.

There’s a significant amount of room between the pouch’s two sides, so you can stow extra gear here. Depending on how you pack, larger items might tumble out when you open the bag.

Overall, we don’t think this is a perfect dopp kit. However, as a versatile travel organizer that can do almost anything in a pinch, we think it’s a solid shout, especially if durability and modularity are your main concerns.
