Lil Wayne Breaks Record for Highest Grossing Hip-Hop Tour

lil wayne tour gross

Lil Wayne's 2008-2009 'I Am Music' and 'America's Most Wanted' tours raked in about $42 million combined, putting them in line to be the highest grossing hip-hop tours that Billboard has on record, and pushing the 28-date Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige outing, which grossed $34.6 million in 2008, into second place.

"It's definitely one of the biggest [tours] in the last couple of years," Lil Wayne's tour producer Shawn Gee told Billboard. "Our plan was to prove that Wayne was a viable headlining arena artist." The two tours, a combined total of 78-dates, ran from Dec. 14, 2008 to Sept. 6, 2009 and pulled in almost 804, 000 fans. A diverse line up of artists and guest appearances by Drake , Soulja Boy , T-Pain , Keri Hilson , Gym Class Heroes and Young Jeezy helped draw the large numbers.

Gee predicts only higher numbers in the future, especially with the upcoming release of the much-delayed 'Rebirth' album. "We definitely want to capitalize on the success we've had and want to continue building Wayne as a touring artist and not just an artist that tours," Gee said. "We established him as a headline artist and I think it grows from there." Weezy will wrap up the national dates of his current "America's Most Wanted' tour on Sept. 10 in Mansfield, Mass., then head overseas for additional shows.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is back! Today (Jan. 31), the “A Milli” rapper decided to end the first month of the year with a bang by announcing his North American “Welcome To Tha Carter Tour” dates. The concert extravaganza is presented by Young Money, Rolling Loud and Live Nation.

“JUST ANNOUNCED! The one and only Lil Tunechi is bringing the #WelcomeToThaCarter Tour to a city near you. Pre-sale LIVE at noon local time at LilWayneOfficial.com ,” Young Money’s Twitter account shared this morning. Dates kick off on April 4 in Minneapolis and run until the grand finale in Los Angeles on May 13. Fans are already on social media sharing their plans to attend by any means necessary. “Soooo Lil Tunechi just made my day with the tour date in ATL. Idgaf what’s going on that day, I gotta be THERE!” one post read. Another person tweeted, “Lil Wayne just announced his tour!! I’m hitting at least [three] cities.”

So far, it has not been revealed who Weezy F. Baby will have joining him, but one can only expect that the rap living legend will have an insane lineup of guests. As we anxiously await more details, Wayne has other big events in the near future. This Sunday (Feb. 5), the “Mrs. Officer” hitmaker will be a Global Impact Award recipient for the 2023 Grammys. The ceremony will honor his “personal and professional achievements in the music industry.” Missy Elliott and Dr. Dre will also be recognized for their many contributions. The original Hot Boy will also hit the stage as a special guest for Rolling Loud in Inglewood, California in March. Other performers include Playboi Carti, Tyga, Travis Scott, Lil Baby, Future, Lil Uzi Vert and more.

Wayne’s “Welcome To Tha Carter Tour” will also see stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Houston. On Aug. 6, 2022, the New Orleans native delivered the show of a lifetime when he joined Drake and Nicki Minaj in Toronto for the iconic Young Money Reunion. Together, “The K-I-N-G, the G.O.A.T. [and] the Queen” performed their chart-topping collaborations such as “HYFR,” “Moment 4 Life” and “The Motto.” While on stage, Wayne said he was “working on Tha Carter VI , coming soon.”

It was an awesome ass concert. Lil wayne was amazing! I would definitely go again to see him perform. The opening act was really really good and I stayed for parts of blink 182 but lil wayne definitely killed it last night

Waited over 3 hours never saw Wayne so we finally just left. Very disappointed. Concert held in a very shady area. Seating was very uncomfortable. This experience most definitely has made my mind up about concerts. This will be the last one.

Drake And Lil Wayne Share The Stage During Wayne's First Date On The "It's All A Blur Tour"

On Saturday (March 23), Drake and his mentor and partner in rhyme, Lil Wayne, shared the stage during the “A Milli” rapper’s first date on the “It’s All A Blur Tour — Big As The What?” The Sunrise, Florida, show date also featured a cameo from famed producer and personality DJ Khaled.

Lil Wayne has been on an exciting run following his sold-out “Welcome To Tha Carter Tour.” Presented by Young Money, Rolling Loud and Live Nation, the 28-city trek kicked off April 4 in Minneapolis before making its way to Chicago, Toronto, New York, Atlanta and Houston, wrapping up on May 13 in Los Angeles.

While the Young Money CEO performed a medley of his greatest hits, Drake ran onto the stage , telling attendees, “Hold on, hold on, because these are my favorite moments in life right now. From top of the mountain emerged the motherf**king greatest rapper of all time. Florida, if y’all don’t make some f**king noise for my brother, Lil Wayne, in here tonight,” before the crowd erupted in cheers.

The duo performed a few of their most popular collaborations before the “God’s Plan” recording artist finished his hefty set list. This was the first tour date since Future and Metro Boomin released their highly anticipated album, WE DON’T TRUST YOU , which seemingly featured a few shots at the Canadian-bred emcee.

Kendrick Lamar’s verse on “Like That” seemed to be a direct jab at the “First Person Shooter” rapper. On the new song, Lamar rapped, “N**gas clickin’ up, but cannot be legit, no ’40 Water,’ tell’ em/ Ah, yeah, huh, yeah, get up with me/ F**k sneak dissin’, first-person shooter, I hope they came with three switches.”

Drake has yet to respond publicly to the diss track, but fans believe the recent photos of him looking distressed and leaving a club wearing headphones were from the moment he first heard the new diss.

Drake Adds Final Big As the What? Shows With Co-Headliner Lil Wayne

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Drake has enlisted Lil Wayne to help him close out the Big As the What? Tour in the coming weeks, including two newly added shows in Newark, New Jersey.

While the trek was billed as a Drake/J. Cole co-headlining run, it appears J. Cole will not be able to make some of the final concerts on the itinerary. So, Lil Wayne will take the stage instead for a run of gigs starting March 23 and 24 at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Wayne will also perform with Drake at the UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York on March 28 and 29; and the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania on March 31. The tour will close out with two newly-announced shows, April 4 and 5, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. (Lil Durk, who’s been providing support for most of the tour, will perform at all the aforementioned stops, except the two shows at UBS Arena.)

After a delay late last year , Drake and J. Cole kicked off the the Big As the What? tour in February. While J. Cole hasn’t dropped an album since 2021’s The Off Season , Drake was touring in support of his most recent effort, For All the Dogs , which arrived last October.

In the midst of the tour, however, Drake has garnered some arguably dubious attention as he’s stood by Tory Lanez in his attempt to appeal his sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. Drake recently shared a photo of Lanez with the caption “3 you,” which is slang for “free you” (the number “3” symbolizes open handcuffs). Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison last August after being found guilty of shooting Meg during a 2020 altercation.

"When there was Drake, I was just standing and when Lil Wayne came out, I was dancing every song" - Jelena Ostapenko on vibing at Miami concert

Jelena Ostapenko recently picked Lil Wayne over Drake as her preferred rapper to vibe to.

Ostapneko defeated home-favorite Jessica Bouzes Maneiro 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the 2024 Miami Open on Thursday, April 25, after having received a bye in the first.

It wasn't a cakewalk for the Latvian that the scoreline might suggest as Maneiro challenged her serve four times and succeeded twice. Ostapenko, however, outdid the Spaniard by converting six out of seven break points.

After the match, the ninth seed sat down with Indian-American former player Prakash Amritraj for an interview on Tennis Channel . One of the things Amritraj brought into the conversation was Ostapenko attending Drake's concert on the sidelines of the Miami Open in March this year.

Ostapenko hilariously revealed vibing to Lil Wayne's guest performance more than Drake's at the concert.

"I think it was nice but honestly the part of the concert where it was Lil Wayne, I liked way better. I don't know I felt his vibe and music was so nice," Jelena Ostapenko said (at 2:42).

The World No. 10 continued:

"When there was Drake, I was just standing, I was not dancing much, and when Lil Wayne came out, I was like dancing every single song even I didn't know them. After the concert, I started to listen to a lot of Lil Wayne's songs."

Jelena Ostapenko: "I like 50 Cent too"

During the aforementioned conversation, Jelena Ostapenko further disclosed her liking for 50 Cent.

"50 Cent, I like 50 Cent yeah too," she told Prakash Amritraj.

The World No. 10 then rued missing out on a 50 Cent concert that happened in Latvia's capital city Riga last year.

"There was a concert last year in Riga but I wasn't there so I was really sad that I couldn't go. Hopefully, he will come soon or maybe I'll be in some city where he will have a concert," she added.

As far as her on-court business at the 2024 Madrid Open is concerned, she is set to take on Argentina's Maria Lourdes Carle who has impressed everyone with her performances.

Carle entered the main draw through the qualifiers and has defeated Emma Raducanu 6-2, 6-2 and Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-4 in the previous rounds. Also, Ostapenko has no experience of facing Carle as it will be their first-ever on-court meeting.

Staten Island musician is opening act for Lil Wayne as star rises: ‘I came a long way from the open mics at the Full Cup’

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island musician William Starda Perry, known as Starda, has taken his musical talents on the road, performing as the opening act for Lil Wayne, Grammy-Award-winning rapper, singer, songwriter and record executive, at national stops for the Lil’ Wayne Tour.

Starda has appeared onstage at the Nebraska, Iowa and Washington stops of the Lil Wayne Tour and is promoting his upcoming EP, “The Starda Party EP,” with producer, Ron Browz. Starda has been featured on playlists globally with Nems, and hometown favorites, Shyheim and Reakwon.

“It’s an honor to share the stage with some of my biggest musical influences like Lil Wayne, Ludacris, T.I. and so many more,” said Starda. “This is my third international tour within a year and first arena tour. I came a long way from the open mics at the Full Cup.

“I’ve been working in the community for over a decade. I’m excited to show the world what Staten Island has to offer, and appreciate all the support I’ve been getting from my borough. Having a legend like Ron Browz not only produce my project, but be my DJ, and perform his hits on my set is still crazy to me.”

For years, Starda has made a positive impact on Staten Island in a range of ways, from anti-gun violence youth initiatives to finance and career empowerment to supporting and hosting community events.

Starda officially kicked off his rap career with the release of “The Starda Kit, Vol. 1,” in 2022. This six-track project introduced Starda’s motivational style, smooth delivery and deep voice reminiscent of Pop Smoke’s essence.

“We’ve been on the road all year. I’m excited for the world to hear what we have in the works,” he added.

Additional dates of the Starda Party Tour, produced by his record label, Banks and Roses Society in association with The Last American Boy, include:

June — Bangkok with the World League Of Fighters

June 13 — Texas with Ludacris, Soulja Boy, Bow Wow, and Young Joc

July 5 —Texas with T.I., Chingy, Ying Yang Twins and Young Joc

ABOUT WILLIAM STARDA PERRY

Starda, an acclaimed Hip-Hop recording artist, actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist hailing from Staten Island, has independently created more than 100 youth programs across New York City and organized live shows for up-and-coming artists in the tri-state area.

In 2020, with live music events drastically reduced due to COVID-related shutdowns, Perry’s WeJustWorkin LLC event and media production agency took a backseat. In 2021, he partnered with entrepreneur and music producer Philly Diamond to establish the independent music label Banks And Roses Society (B.A.R.S. Productions LLC).

In early 2023, Starda unveiled his second EP named “Swagg Durty and She Love It,” a project focused on women’s empowerment as part of Women’s History Month celebrations. Following the release of the music video for the EP’s lead single “Who You,” Starda collaborated with film director and MCEE, The Last American BBoy.

The Last American BBoy proposed the concept of a series called “Rapper in Thailand” to Starda. This series led to his enlisting BBoy and 2x Boxing World Champion, Shannon Briggs, as guest stars for the series, which led to his first collaboration with recording artist Ron Browz, to produce Starda’s hit single “Hola”.

After receiving his successful stint in Thailand, Starda returned home. A month later, an opportunity arose for his B.A.R.S. Label to independently organize a 5-month promotional tour with Ron Browz across the U.S.

The track “Hola” quickly gained popularity among fans and DJs, being played in major clubs and radio stations across America. Simultaneously, Starda expanded his brand by collaborating with BBoy on various films, earning him credits as an executive producer and leading roles as an actor.

In December 2023, Starda embarked on a solo international tour, spending three months touring Thailand. During this tour, he completed his third EP “Starda Party,” entirely produced by and featuring Ron Browz, and released it in April 2024.

In the spring of 2024, the “Starda Party” tour kicks off in the United States. This time, Starda will grace arenas and festival stages alongside artists like Soulja Boy, Bow Wow, Ludacris and T.I., among others. Additionally, Starda will make appearances on select dates for the Lil Wayne & Friends tour.

Following the release of their latest EP, Banks and Roses Society will unveil the inaugural issue of their Sci-Fi Adventure comic book series, featuring Starda as the lead character named after the label.

Drake leaves Jelena Ostapenko cold, Lil Wayne brings the vibe

Jelena Ostapenko 2023 US Open

Jelena Ostapenko has lifted the lid just a little on her taste in music as she revealed that Drake’s performance at the Miami Open left her unimpressed.

Drake’s strongest connection to sport probably comes in the form of his infamous gambling curse. If the Canadian rapper has money on you to win there is every chance that you are going down.

However, Ostapenko says that the concert wasn’t a dead loss as she really enjoyed the performance of Lil Wayne.

“I think it was nice but honestly the part of the concert where it was Lil Wayne, I liked way better. I don’t know I felt his vibe and music was so nice,” Ostapenko said in a chat with Prakash Amritraj at the Tennis Channel desk in the Caja Magica.

“When there was Drake, I was just standing, I was not dancing much, and when Lil Wayne came out, I was like dancing every single song even I didn’t know them. After the concert, I started to listen to a lot of Lil Wayne’s songs.”

Ostapenko also revealed that she enjoys the music of American rapper 50 Cent.

“50 Cent, I like 50 Cent yeah too,” she told Amritraj.

“There was a concert last year in Riga but I wasn’t there so I was really sad that I couldn’t go. Hopefully, he will come soon or maybe I’ll be in some city where he will have a concert,” she added.

Ostapenko started her Madrid Open campaign with a win over home hope Jessica Bouzas Maneiro that eased her into the competition.

She has set out her stall to be more aggressive this season and it will be interesting to see how she folds that strategy into her game on clay.

“I felt like last few years the game was kind of there, but not very consistent. Maybe like sometimes,” Ostapenko said.

“Now I’m just trying to play little bit maybe more aggressive. It sounds funny, but in deciding moments I feel like it is what I was not doing the right way last few years. I feel like now I’m doing it better.

” I think it’s more mental because I could always, like, be aggressive and hit the ball hard. Sometimes I felt like, even it sounds funny, I was trying to play for sure in deciding moments, maybe make an opponent to miss the ball. That’s not really my game.

“Even if I miss a few balls here and there, I feel like I need to stick to my aggressive game and do what I have to do.”

Deion Sanders tees up his second spring football game at Colorado: What to know

Smaller audience but bigger expectations for colorado football coach this time..

lil wayne tour gross

BOULDER, Colo. – Deion Sanders has fashioned a new look for himself this spring as head football coach at Colorado . At age 56, the Pro Football Hall of Famer grew out his light beard and often showed up for work in blue-collar coveralls that otherwise might be worn by a car mechanic.

In this case, the style fits his task. Renovations are underway by a repairman who’s one year wiser – and grayer. The question now is if it’s all good enough in Year Two after so much fell apart in Year One, especially when it seems his player roster is constantly changing .

Is Sanders’ quarterback son Shedeur really better after breaking his back last season ?

Are his blockers up for the job this time after Colorado brought in a whole new starting offensive line to replace last year’s?

And does the Colorado fan base still believe?

Some clues will be revealed Saturday at Colorado’s annual intrasquad spring game at Folsom Field.

What is the read on Sanders' second CU team?

The television audience and crowd for this spring game will be much smaller this year than last year, Sanders’ first season in Boulder. But it still will likely be the second-biggest spring football crowd in Colorado history, better than 2008, when the game drew 17,800.

There are at least two general reasons for this:

∎ Many CU alumni and fans still believe in the high potential of Deion Sanders after he turned around a downtrodden program that finished 1-11 the season before he was hired in late 2022.

“I’m hugely optimistic,” said Jeff Crawford, a Colorado graduate and donor to CU athletics.

∎ But there are also plenty of reasons to be skeptical after Sanders finished his first season in Boulder with a 4-8 record, including eight losses in his final nine games . Much like last year, Colorado’s roster is being remade with dozens of transfer players coming and going.

“The best teams that I was on weren’t the most talented teams,” former Colorado and NFL linebacker Chad Brown told USA TODAY Sports. “Talent is only a part of the equation. You’ve got to get these guys to play together and become a team. So with all the movement in and off of this roster, it just seems like it’s an incredibly difficult task to develop players and to grow players and to grow a culture there. So hopefully that part of it is not being overlooked.”

Where will it be televised and how big will crowd be?

Instead of being on ESPN, like it was last year, the game will be on the Pac-12 Network for one hour, starting at 3 p.m. ET Saturday, followed by the Oregon spring game at 4 p.m. ET.

Instead of a sellout crowd like last year (47,277) , there were 22,000 tickets distributed as of Monday.

Both are a far cry from what Deion Sanders wanted. In a video posted this week, he said his team is so much better this spring compared to last year.

“Night and day,” he said on Thee Pregame Show .

On paper, he’s probably right. His star players return, including Shedeur Sanders and two-way phenom Travis Hunter, both of whom have their replica jerseys on sale in the campus bookstore for $109.99.  Colorado’s biggest weakness last year – the offensive line – also appears to be bigger and better.

So then why did “Coach Prime” have to make this kind of plea to fans this month?

“I want everything we do sold out,” he said on Well Off Media April 10. “I didn’t stutter, nor did I stumble. I want it sold out. We love you. We love us. Let’s get together. Let’s make it happen.”

It likely won’t, but that doesn’t mean big things aren’t happening this weekend for Sanders and Colorado. They are – just with a little more of a wait-and-see market than before.

What else is happening this weekend at CU?

Recruits are coming. Rapper Lil Wayne is performing. And Deion Sanders is helping host a “Prime Time Elite Dinner” Friday to benefit the collective that supports his players for their names, images and likenesses (NIL). A VIP table with “Coach Prime” already sold out at $20,543 for eight tickets.

Just like last spring, Sanders will use this weekend to showcase his program for recruits. Among those planning to visit Boulder is Byron Louis, a high school running back out of Fort Lauderdale who ranks 14 th nationally as a running back prospect for 2025, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

“University of Colorado I’m on my way,” Louis wrote Wednesday on social media site X .

Incoming transfers and a Lil Wayne concert

Colorado also is expected to host several transfer players who plan to enroll this year, including Pittsburgh defensive end Dayon Hayes, Ohio defensive lineman Rayyan Buell and Texas offensive lineman Payton Kirkland.

The latter three show that the transfer portal door swings both ways – in and out. Colorado has had at least 33 scholarship players announce they were transferring or leaving the team since November, mostly backup players or those who became disenchanted with the program, such as Cormani McClain, the No. 1 cornerback recruit in the nation last year. But the Buffs also have added at least 28 transfers since last December, several of whom will play Saturday.

Those who make the trip this weekend might run into some rain on Saturday. But they also can see Lil Wayne, Deion Sanders’ friend, who will perform at the CU Events Center on campus after the game. That concert is nearly sold out with over 6,000 tickets out, as of Monday, according to the university.

Can the new blockers block?

None of the five starting offensive linemen who finished the season last year at Colorado are even on the roster anymore after four decided to transfer and another exhausted his eligibility in college.

Anywhere else, that probably would not be good. But here at Colorado, fans are excited about it.

That’s because last year’s offensive line gave up the second-most quarterback sacks in the nation (56), leaving Shedeur Sanders battered to the point that he fractured his back.

“Our biggest weakness last year was in the trenches,” said Crawford, the CU grad and donor. “I think we have upgraded significantly in the trenches. And I think that will be the difference this year. If those guys play well like I think we will, I think we’ll have a very successful year.”

It’s still a question that won’t be answered until the fall: Can this new group block?

They’re a bunch of new transfer players, along with Jordan Seaton, the No. 1 offensive tackle recruit in the nation for 2024 , according to 247Sports.

“Just to say you’ve got new offensive linemen doesn’t mean you’ve got a new offensive line,” said Brown, the former Colorado linebacker. “The line is the one unit on the football team that requires the most work, that requires the most time together, that requires the most unspoken communications … How do you turn some linemen into an offensive line? That’s a very a critical piece.”

Deion Sanders still sees huge progress there nonetheless.

“These guys are a tremendous group and they’re a tremendous family,” Deion Sanders said last week. “You rarely see one without the other. You rarely see one of those guys anywhere. You see three or four of them together at all times.”

Deion Sanders calls it a 'much better staff'

Only four of the 10 full-time assistant coaches from last year’s team are listed in the same coaching roles as last year after five coaches left for jobs at other schools and one coach changed positions.

“The staff is a much better staff,” Deion Sanders said on Thee Pregame Show this week. “It’s a much more understanding staff that’s more relatable to these young men as well.”

Saturday will be a dress rehearsal for them, too, especially on defense under new defensive coordinator Robert Livingston , who previously served as defensive backs coach for the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals. Livingston lost McClain but gained several newcomers, including Oklahoma State transfer cornerback DJ McKinney and former LSU lineman Quency Wiggins, both of whom have three years of college eligibility remaining.

They are expected to play in a format Saturday that will feature the first-team offense against the second-team defense and the first-team defense against the second-team offense.

“I’m excited to feel that atmosphere,” Livingston told reporters this week. “I’m excited to see what it’s like to be here under the mountains and kind of everything you took the job for.”

After the game, the transfer portal remains open until the end of the month. More players could come and go before the Colorado roster is formed in time for the season opener Aug. 29 at home against North Dakota State.
