How To Draw A Cruise Ship | in 8 Easy Steps

Here’s how to ace the perfect drawing of a realistic cruise ship using eight simple steps! This engaging tutorial will not only teach you how to sketch this robust vessel, but also how to enhance it with the use of background elements and color.

A cruise ship is a large boat used to transport passengers on various kinds of journeys. Cruises are meant to be relaxing, scenic and fun for all guests.

This is probably why most of these ships often feature ameneties including pools, parks, dining lounges and sometimes even concert halls. That’s a pretty good indicator of how big these oceanic vehicles can get.

What you will need

• A4 sheet of paper
• Pencils (HB, 2h and 3b)
• A ruler (optional)
• Coloring kit
• 30-35 minutes

how to Draw a Cruise Ship 

I recommend studying the outline before you begin drawing. This is a great way to get yourself familiar with each step beforehand! Also, make sure you have all of the required drawing tools with you. Because this drawing is fundamentally a combination of shapes put together, a ruler and eraser will definitely be needed!

Step 1: Draw the cruise ship body

Start by flipping your paper in a landscape orientation to gain more drawing room. Tackle the cruise ship’s body first, seeing as you will be adding all of the other components onto it later on.

Draw an inverted trapezoid in the middle of your paper. To achieve this shape, you’re going to have to draw a horizontal line at the base of the paper first. Then, draw two diagonal lines from each end of the horizontal line. These lines should be slanted outward, and the line on the left should be longer than the right.

Finally, draw a horizontal line on the upper side to close the structure. As the slanted lines are of unequal lengths, there will be a slope in the middle of the upper line, as shown in the image below.

Step 2: Draw Two decks

The decks are the upper part of the ship that’s usually seen above water. This is where passengers go out to get some fresh air, take in the oceanic views, and make use of the amenities.

To complete this step, draw a long horizontal rectangle on top of the ship’s body for the first deck. Because we’re adding two, draw another rectangle above it. Ensure the upper one is smaller and has diagonal sides, and you’re good to go!

Step 3: Draw two smoke stacks and wind tower

Draw two wide vertical rectangles next to each other on top of the right side’s upper deck. The length of both of these rectangles should be the same to execute a sleek design. Add a little horizontal rectangle on top of each smoke stack to cap it off and make it look a bit more realistic.

Lastly, draw a thin vertical rectangle on top of the left side of the upper deck to represent the wind tower. You want to make sure the length of the wind tower is longer than the two smoke stacks, as this is how it often appears on real-life ships.

• Draw a vertical rectangle on the left side of the upper deck for the wind tower
• Ensure the wind tower is longer than the smoke stacks for a realistic look

Step 4: Draw windows on the Two decks

The decks usually have several rooms on them to provide passengers with scenic views of the ocean, so they’re a great addition to consider for your cruise ship sketch!

To add the windows, draw a series of small rectangles within the width of both decks. Draw nine small rectangles that are all the same size and aligned on the same spot on the bottom deck.

Then, draw six small rectangles on the upper deck that are relatively the same size as the ones added to the bottom deck. For this deck though, draw three rectangles next to each other on the left, and three next to each other on the right.

• Draw nine small rectangles on the bottom deck for the bottom windows
• Draw six small rectangles on the upper deck for the top windows
• Make sure the top windows have three on one side and three on the other

Step 5: Draw the railings on the main body

To add this cool safety feature, draw two horizontal lines parallel to the upper line of the main body. Then, draw several vertical lines connecting these parallel lines to the main body of the cruise ship. There should be a short gap between the vertical lines for a neat design.

• Draw two horizontal lines above the upper line of the main body
• Add a series of short vertical lines between the main body and horizontal lines
• Ensure there’s a small space between each vertical line for a neat design

Step 6: Draw the main body windows

The decks are not the only part of a cruise ship that contain rooms. Seeing as cruise ships often transport thousands of passengers at a time, there are also rooms below deck, and these rooms require windows, as well.

So for this step, draw a total of nine small circles along the center of the main body. To avoid making them too clustered, separate the circles in a pair of three . Draw three circles next to each other on the left, three in the middle, and three on the right, and you’re good to go!

Taking your cruise ship drawing to the next level 

As you are probably already aware, cruise ships don’t fly in the air or run on the streets as other vehicles do. They float on sea.

Right now, there’s not really much perspective in your drawing. The viewer may not easily realize that it’s a cruise ship since the surrounding doesn’t really give off that vibe. For that reason, you need to upgrade your drawing and add more details to it.

Step 7: Adding a background

Draw multiple waves under the ship’s body to pull off the oceanic scenery. To do this, first draw a large wavy shape surrounding the bottom part of the cruise ship. Then, add a few wavy strips within the width of the round shape. These strips are going to transform into waves once they’re colored in.

step 8: Adding color 

To spice up your drawing, add some vibrant colors to improve the appeal and realism of it. This will definitely give your drawing a lively look. Use a combination of your favorite colors to differentiate between each element on the ship.

We used dark blue to color the ship’s body in our drawing. Red color for the smokestacks and wind tower. Black color for the railings and a light blue color for the windows. You can use similar colors in your drawing or customize it according to your taste . Just make sure to color the drawing in a tidy manner.

You can add a flag at the top of the second deck for a nice personalized touch.

Feel free to create a name for your ship and then add it somewhere along the bottom of the cruise ship.

To give your drawing even more context, add a sun and a few birds above your ship to depict the time of day. If you’re going for a night time scene, draw a moon and a few stars surrounding the ship.

Interpreting Line Drawings for Ship Modelling

One the members asked if I would write a few words about interpreting lines drawings and using them in ship modelling. Actually, I wrote a bit about this over on Dry Dock Models, so rather than reinvent the wheel again, I will repost the relevant material here for anyone who is interested.

This subject might be of interest to those of you who wish to learn a bit more about scratch building or kit bashing. I will approach it in parts, and even so, I will only be going over the basics so there will be questions about lines drawings that I do not cover.

First, let us take a Model Shipways plan as an example. It has been redrawn, probably from some original source. There are three drawings in a set of lines. There is the sheer profile (side view), the half breadth, (looking down through the top or up through the bottom at one side of the hull), and the body plan (view down the middle of the hull using one half of each cross section).These drawings have been faired, meaning that the draftsman has gone through the drawing and worked it out so that all three drawings agree with each other and produce a smooth hull. If there is any discrepancy in any of the drawings at any point, then the plan is not fair and will not produce a usable set of frames from which one could build a model.

Now, the first drawing to look at is the sheer profile. This side view gives you the general outline of the hull, but there are also some other important architectural lines to address. There are the waterlines (not to be confused with the hull's load waterline) that run along the hull horizontally. These are sometimes referred to as level lines or, in the case of a solid hull model, lift lines. Then there are some curved lines that run along the length of the hull called buttock lines. The key to a drawing like this is that these lines appear in each of the three drawings, they just look different because of the different aspect of each drawing.

Look at the half breadth. You will see a centreline, from which all horizontal measurements are taken. Out from the centreline you will see a series of curved lines. These are those same waterlines we saw in the sheer profile, they are just seen from the bottom up rather than from the side. In the half breadth, you will also see some straight lines that are placed out from the centreline at even spacing. These are those same buttock lines we saw as curved lines in the sheer profile. Again, we are seeing them from a different aspect. Also, in the half breadth, the line of the deck and the line of the railing will show up as curved lines, almost like waterlines. These are important for developing the cross section shapes in the upper part of the hull.

First let's take one of the cross section stations that is already in the plan and plot its measurements to see how it is done. Let's take station 2 up forward for instance. Remember, on the sheer profile drawing, all measurements are taken vertically from the base line up and all the measurements on the half breadth are from the centreline out. Now, you can use a pair of dividers to take these measurements, but I used to do that and was never quite sure the points of the dividers were right on the lines I wanted to measure. So, I switched to using a tick strip. Its just a piece of paper or card stock. Lay a piece of paper on the sheer profile so that it is arranged right on the station 2 vertical line. Make sure it also intersects the base line. Now, place a mark on the paper where it crosses the base line. Now, make a mark on each buttock line at station 2 and mark them so you remember which is which. Now, take that tick strip over to the body plan and lay it down so that the base line mark is lined up on the base line of the body plan and the strip is aligned vertically with the buttock line closest to the centreline. The first buttock line mark you made on the sheer profile should line up with where cross section 2 intersects the first buttock line. Next, move the strip outward along the base line of the body plan so that it lines up with the second buttock line. If all the marks are aligned, the second buttock line mark you made should meet cross section 2 where it intersects the second buttock line.

Inside The Haunted Mansion Parlor Coming to the Disney Treasure

Since opening its foreboding front doors at  Disneyland Park  in 1969,  the Haunted Mansion  and the lore surrounding it has captured the mortal hearts of Disney Parks goers, inspiring three subsequent attractions, multiple film adaptations, merchandise lines and plans for a soon-to-debut bar onboard the  Disney Treasure . Plans for  the Haunted Mansion Parlor  will honor more than five decades of fandom and introduce the world to the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga. 

Disney Cruise Line and Disney Imagineers will harness the power of design to convey the nostalgia of the original attraction alongside a new nautical storyline. The venue will resemble a well-appointed ship parlor, which once belonged to a  jovial sea captain  and his strange, but captivating fiancé. With so many rumors swirling about, it’s hard to say what happened to the happy couple following their sudden and mysterious disappearances – but our most discerning guests may glean the truth by deciphering clues hidden around the bar. 

As part of the Halfway to Halloween celebration here on the  Disney Parks Blog , it’s my ghoulish delight to be your guide to unlocking a few of Haunted Mansion Parlor’s secrets. 

Something Seems Fishy About This Aquarium 

When plans for the original Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland were well underway, celebrated Disney Imagineer  Rolly Crump  proposed a creative concept for a “Museum of the Weird” exhibit. As the final design took shape, many of Rolly’s initial ideas were realized throughout the attraction. However, a few of his concepts remained in the vault, living on thanks to dedicated fans and Disney historians. One such concept was a mysterious aquarium, filled with ghost fish. More than fifty years later, the sketch Rolly developed was referenced by a new generation of Disney Imagineers to create a modern “Aquarium with Ghost Fish” for the Haunted Mansion Parlor.

Blending nostalgia with a fresh layer of lore, the aquarium will fold into the curious backstory of the parlor’s former sea captain owner. Legends passed down from The Captain’s devoted crew recount how he was last seen heading to his parlor for a special meal prepared by his betrothed. All that remained after The Captain and his bride seemingly vanished was his hat, which was found floating in the aquarium tank. Perhaps his disappearance grants a new meaning to “fish food.”

An Eerie Art Collection 

The Haunted Mansion Parlor’s eerie portrait gallery will depict some of the wandering souls that have taken up residence onboard the Disney Treasure. The collection of works will be reminiscent of the quintessential paintings inside the Haunted Mansion attraction, mimicking the art stylings used by Disney Imagineers in 1969. The portrait gallery will also incorporate present-day technologies to allow the ghostly residents to entertain guests in new ways. 

I’m delighted to introduce you to a few of the happy haunts that will call the Disney Treasure home…

The concept for The Mariner was created by famed Disney animator Marc Davis. The portrait now occupies the halls of the attractions in Walt Disney World Resort  and  Tokyo Disney Resort . The Mariner’s story will be taken to new depths when he takes his place in the Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Treasure and continues to uphold Marc Davis’ impactful legacy.

A distinguished portrait of the good-humored sea captain will also grace the walls of the Haunted Mansion Parlor. His lifelong dream of serving on a luxury ocean liner was cut short after his untimely demise, but his merry soul has lingered on in his private parlor.  

The likeness of The Captain’s enigmatic bride-to-be will take cues from Marc Davis’ iconic “cat lady” concept, which was also featured in the original attraction. Inside the Haunted Mansion Parlor, her portrait will flicker to reveal her true form and perhaps, her true intentions.  

Tales of the doomed couple’s first encounter all began when The Captain received a dramatic distress transmission from another vessel. He wasted no time in altering his course to aid in the rescue, but as he neared the source of the call, he found only a mangled wreckage and a lone survivor – a woman floating amongst the debris. With bright green eyes, chestnut hair and a golden key hanging about her neck, it is no wonder that The Captain was immediately taken by her beauty. The pair became inseparable and were soon engaged to be wed. 

A Ghostly Line of Drinkware 

The portraits inside Haunted Mansion Parlor will also lend inspiration to a Disney Cruise Line-exclusive commemorative mug collection that will debut onboard the Disney Treasure. The ceramic mugs will appear to be carved from the worn wooden planks of a ghost ship. These early sketches and models illustrate the first in a series coming to the Disney Treasure – one inspired by The Mariner and other by The Captain’s bride.

Miniature Golf Highlights On Board Disney Cruise Line

If you love playing miniature golf, grab your friends and family members and head up to Deck 13. This entire Disney-themed mini golf course stars Goofy, and his son, Max, as each hole is interactive, allowing Guests to play mini golf like never before. Some of the course highlights include the “Handling a Dog Leg” hole, where cruisers must try to avoid the fire hydrant and, instead, use Pluto’s dog bone to guide them to the hole.

Don’t get “Stuck in the Rough” on this hole – follow Goofy’s lead! Goofy will show golfers how to avoid the tall turf and how to sleer clear of a lawn mower to guarantee a hole-in-one! If there is one thing Disney loves – it’s a play on words, and that shows at the “Reading the Green” hole. Guests will find stacks of books as well as a large magnifying glass, which are placed in this course as obstacles.

For those pirate lovers in your party, they will have a swashbuckling time at the “Attacking the Green” hole. Here, golfers will take a pirate’s approach as they attempt to sink their putt in for a hole-in-one, all while avoiding the pirate-like obstacles scattered throughout.

Mini Golf Fun For Adults and Children Alike!

One of the most unique aspects of Disney Cruise Line’s mini golf course compared to other miniature golf courses, is that Disney offers an “adult” and “children” golf tutorial at each hole. Using Goofy (for adults) and Max (for kids), Disney maps out where the tee should be at each hole!
