    Customer Review

Location is amazing, the employees super-friendly and also the hostel itself is incredibly well-kept!

Very helpful staff, the top advice I&'ve ever gotten in any hostel/hotel. Alex gave me superb tips about what to do in Lisbon and exactly where to travel in Portugal. It was clean and safe, everything worked.

I liked especially the location. The hostel is situated within the city center next to a Metro station and other public transport. I also liked that the breakfast was included and freshly made each morning by really friendly staff. Furthermore, the staff was really friendly and helpful and provided us with outstanding recommendations for our stay.

    Yan Z...

It&'s the most effective hostel I&'ve ever Stayed. 30 seconds away from city and metro, tram. Free tea and coffee all the time. Most important, they organize different activities every single night. We did one night of wine tasting, one night walking in Alfama during the night. Each and every night, they also propose some Portuguese specialties, like sangria, some soup. I really like there.

    Chris S...

Nice warm and friendly employees and calm atmosphere. breakfast very very good !

    Gerrit S...

A great location to stay at. The employees is always friendly and helpful and makes you really feel staying with friends. I&'d say: the extremely best hostel I have been to. (And I have been to dozens in the past few years. )

The staff was very warm and friendly and always provided outstanding recommendations.

    Caterina C...

The location of this hostel is great, right on one of the principal routes of Central Lisbon for shops and its proximity to means of transport to Belem and also the airport and also the spectacular Placa del Comercio. The staff were really warm and friendly and nice, the rooms really tidy and clean and even the shared bathrooms were spotless. Breakfast was included in the price and was really very good too. Also, each and every night activities related to Portuguese culture have been organized and this allowed solo travellers like me to get to meet people.

Super clean, fantastic and helpful staff, fun activities, wifi everywhere, nice and comfortable beds. Just a excellent place to stay!

    Trevor M...

The employees was outstanding along with the hostel was very clean. Excellent location. This was, by far, the most effective hostel I have ever been to. Each night, the employees organized special events. It was very inviting. The environment of the hostel was nice and relaxed. Perfect for meeting new people. The breakfast service was excellent! And they even did my laundry for &€6. The morning of my checkout, I woke up extremely late for my flight. The employees helped me have a look at quickly and had a cab ready for us. Thanks to him, we made it to our flight just in the knick of time. That&'s just one example of how the employees goes above and beyond to help the travellers. I HIGHLY recommend this hostel to anyone travelling to Lisbon.

    Tefesehet M...

It is one of the extremely best hostels I have stayed at. I have stayed at a lot. The staff is super friendly and also the location was spotless. The locations is best as it is situated within the middle of the city close to the train and all of the attractions.

The private room on the last top floor had an awesome view on the Arco de rua Augusta and also the Pra&ça de Comercio. It was large enough and clean.

    Spencer C...

The second we walked in the door we were greeted with the excitement and kindness of old friends. The employees were above and beyond helpful throughout our stay making sure our time was utilized the most. Hostel had a outstanding setting to meet individuals and make friends. Breakfast was cooked for you in the morning and also the dishes taken care of after. Everything you could think of needing as a backpacker the hostel covered it - right down to battery packs for your phone for the day. We ran into Alex on the metro on our way to the airport during his day off and he gave us both a hug and a great bye. The individuals here really care. Gonzolo&'s nightly outings were fantastic and he is so knowledgeable.

Lisbon › Hotel

Travellers house lisbon.

2 star rating

Lisbon is the world's hostel capital, regularly dominating annual awards for the very best of this type of accommodation. Among those always riding high in the rankings is Traveller's House, a backpacker classic since it opened in 2006 in a 250-year-old block on the Rua Augusta, in the heart of the downtown Baixa neighborhood. For a cheap party vibe, grab a bunk in one of the brightly colored dorms. Those looking for more privacy can choose en-suite rooms or one of four studios that offer all the charms of a fancy boutique hotel—including azulejos and exposed woodwork built after the 1755 earthquake. The place is relaxed and fun, with the cozy lounges filled with comfy sofas and beanbags for chilling. Travellers House also hosts regular events,  from Portuguese wine-tasting to Segway trips around the city. The cool staff seek to make your stay feel like crashing at a friend's place—except that the rooms are actually clean and comfortable, the bed linens crisp, and there's a free breakfast waiting in the morning.

Travellers House Hostel, Lisbon – A Review

Travellers House Hostel, Lisbon – A Review

lisbon travellers house

It is so rare that I get the chance to ever feel at home in a hostel. The reason being that I spend to little time in each one. So when I find this ‘home away from home’, it is only right to shout about it. Lisbon has a reputation for having some of the best hostels, not only in Europe but in the world. With so many hostels having high reviews, it was hard to choose. Eventually, I found Travellers House and I instantly knew this was where I wanted to stay. It turned out to be the best hostel I have stayed in, in Western Europe.

Address – Rua Augusta 89, 1100-048 Lisboa

What Made Travellers House So Great?

The location.

My hostel is often the last thing I organise before any trip. First, I decide which restaurants I want to eat in , then what I want to see. This gives me a good idea of what part of the city I want to stay in. Lisbon, as I said previously, is known for having great hostels. However, most seemed to be just a little bit out of the city centre. This meant spending a lot of time walking or constantly using public transport. Luckily, I found Travellers House. It was right in the heart of everything I had planned. Located on Rua Augusta, the main pedestrian street in Lisbon, the hostel couldn’t have been any more central if they tried.

The hostel had fantastic views of Comercio Square from the balcony. This made it a fantastic place to watch the locals and tourists go about their day. Metro stations, Baixa-Chiado and Terriero Do Paco, were within a few minutes walking distance. The tram to Belem went from less than a hundred metres away. Rossio Train Station was also just under five minutes away, perfect for my early start when heading to Sintra for the day. The location of Travellers House was what originally sold it to me, and I was not left disappointed. I can only think of a handful of hostels that I have stayed in where the location has been as good.

Daily Activities

It is always good when a hostel puts on extra activities. It shows the staff care about the guests and wants them to have a good time. Travellers House does a nightly event, sometimes inside the hostel and other times out in the city. On my first night, there was a Portuguese wine tasting night. 10 bottles of wine were shared between guests in the hostel common area. It proved to be a great night, as you might imagine, and a fantastic way to meet and interact with other guests. During my stay, there was a stroll to the hills of Alfama. This included a fado show and some food. Each activity seemed to cost €6.50 but that represents great value considering it’s all you will probably spend that night.

Travellers House Hostel

It was the staff that ran each of the nightly activities. This was a great way for them to meet the guests and for the guests to get more comfortable with the workers. They always greeted guests with a “hello” or “good morning”. They were ever present to answer any questions I had, whether it was about the trams or directions, etc. Having good staff in a hostel can make your stay so much more comfortable. There is nothing worse than feeling like you have to walk on eggshells around staff who close themselves off from guests.

The Amazing Free Breakfast

It happens way too often, a hostel advertises a free breakfast and you arrive at something slightly different than what you imagined. I have stayed in hostels where their idea of a free breakfast was stale bread and mouldy jam. Travellers House is a long way from that though. Each morning, guests get to choose from one of three breakfast items. Crepes with chocolate, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast or yoghurt, fruit and cereal. Your choice is then prepared fresh by the two women working in the kitchen and brought to you in the dining room. Tea and coffee are also provided. All they ask guests to do is return their dirty dishes to the kitchen when finished. It is not often I look forward to a hostel breakfast like I did in Lisbon.

Breakfast at Travellers House Hostel

The Perfect Layout

A hostel can try their hardest for guests but without the right layout, it just doesn’t work. Every hostel needs a good common room. This is vital for guests to interact with each other. Travellers House has three areas for guests to chill. One is the main common area, which has a couch, a few bean bags, chairs and music playing throughout the day. There is a dining room with one big table for groups to gather around and a few others that sit approximately six people on each. Finally, there is a tv room, holding a couple of seats and a tv to unwind and maybe watch a movie. Having multiple common rooms also meant that if guests don’t want to take part in activities they are not forced into their dorm rooms.

Common area in travellers house

The Other Positives of Staying at Travellers House

Travellers House has plenty of other plus points. There is a fully-equipped kitchen that is free for use once breakfast has finished. They provide free towels and locks for each guest upon checking in. The lock is for the under-bed lockers which also have a safe in them. At the reception, there is a fridge containing beer, water and soda for guests to take. Each cost €1.50 and the balance is paid at check-out. This also encouraged people to mix, as they could sit and have a beer together. The showers and bathrooms are divided by gender and there are plenty to go around. The beds are comfortable. Computers are free to use, as well as having the option of printing. Luggage storage is also available to guests.

A big priority seemed to be the safety of the guests. Each room, whether it was a dorm or private, needed a card to enter and staff had to buzz you into the hostel every time. It makes sense, especially given how busy the street was outside the hostel.

dorm room at travellers house

What Travellers House Could Improve On

Maybe one slight improvement could be the beds, or more accurately, my bed. The bed itself was very comfortable but made a lot of noise every time I moved. This didn’t seem to happen with anyone else. It can get annoying when you are trying to be quiet in the mornings or when other guests are asleep. Apart from that though, it was an excellent hostel to stay in. I wouldn’t have to think twice about returning if I found myself in Lisbon again!

L isbon's rich cultural heritage and beautiful cityscape—the city was famously built on seven hills—are a magnet for travelers from around the globe. From its narrow cobblestone streets lined with Portuguese “pastelarias” (pastry shops) to its independent boutiques and small restaurants serving the freshest catch of the day, Old World charm can be found on every corner. Meanwhile, the city’s contemporary side is reflected in its vibrant culinary scene (over a dozen of its restaurants are Michelin-rated), new museums, art galleries and designer showrooms.

The list of the best hotels in Lisbon has become increasingly competitive, with new properties popping up at a frequent pace and classics undergoing rapid renovations. Newcomer Altis Belém Hotel & Spa has already a loyal clientele, while Santiago de Alfama , a former palace, has been transformed into a sleek luxury escape. The Bairro Alto Hotel emerged from renovations with a trendy rooftop attracting guests and locals alike, while the Four Seasons Ritz is the city's first true luxury property, offering an unparalleled experience honed over decades of welcoming guests. Below, the best hotels in Lisbon in 2024.

Lisbon's Four Seasons outpost may have a brutalist facade, but inside, the hotel is a mid-century dream. Perched on a hill in a quiet neighborhood just a block away from the exquisite Parque Eduardo VII (the city's largest), it affords miles of unobstructed views over Lisbon's cityscape of terracotta rooftops. In the sleek lobby, a sophisticated palette of golden yellows highlights a museum-worthy collection of Portuguese mid-century tapestries, sculptures and oil paintings from some of the country's most renowned artists, like Almada Negreiros, after whom the hotel's elegant lounge was named.

The mid-century aesthetic continues in the guest rooms and suites with clean lines and graphic shapes, clad in sleek furniture with pops of deep greens, blues and orange, all with marble bathrooms and private balconies with expansive views of the city and the park. Speaking of the views, even if working out on vacation is not your thing, you should check out the open-air running track that loops around the expansive rooftop and rewards runners with breathtaking vistas.

The Santiago Suite boasts a modern bathroom with a freestanding tub and rainshower that overlooks the Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora.

Santiago de Alfama

Who Will Love It: Urban dwellers seeking eclectic design and tranquility in one of Lisbon's oldest and most beautiful neighborhoods
All-Star Amenities: All-day restaurant; beauty salon; pillow menu; turndown service; 24-hour room service; complimentary Wi-Fi; soaking tubs; rain showers
What Not To Miss: Lunch on the terrace of the hotel's all-day eatery Audrey's, which uses ingredients grown in the property's vegetable garden
Location: Alfama

With as competitive a boutique hotel scene as there is in Lisbon, it takes truly impeccable service and unwavering attention to detail to stand out. Santiago de Alfama, a 19-key stay housed in a former 15th-century workhouse nestled on a quiet cobblestone street in the city's oldest area, has caught the eye of well-heeled travelers with its authenticity, luxury touches, prime location and warm hospitality. While the family-run property has plenty of historic charm—the Roman ruins it sits on are part of the interior—it oozes a serene sense of modernity perfectly in sync in this thousands-year-old neighborhood.

Each guest room is awash in natural light and features original artwork, décor and textiles sourced from as far as India (don’t miss the custom house stationery in every room). Book the Santiago Suite and wake up to spectacular views over Alfama and the Tejo River. There, a modern bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, double vanities and a rainfall shower looks out to a post-card perfect view of the breathtaking Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora.

The hotel's regal interiors are flush with pops of color and original features like crown moldings, patterned ceilings and azulejo tiles.

Palacio das Especiarias

All-Star Amenities: Spa; breakfast included in the rate; some rooms have private balconies; a courtyard; curated experiences for hotel guests
What Not To Miss: The hotel's fado dinners are a hit
Location: Baixa-Chiado

Being value-conscious doesn’t have to mean sacrificing character, and this former 16th-century mansion offers both in spades. Guests are transported back to the Age of Discoveries, when Portugal was a maritime power, transforming Lisbon into a cosmopolitan trade center with access to some of the world's rarest metals, precious stones and spices. The hotel's regal interiors are flush with pops of color and original features like crown moldings, patterned ceilings, a grand staircase and azulejo tiles. All 41 rooms have a unique amenity—a freestanding soaking tub, stunning views of the Tagus River or a private balcony. The underground spa, which features a sauna and a Roman bath, whisks guests away into a serene candle-lit setting that completely silences the city's hustle and bustle.

The buzzy fifth-floor eatery is popular among guests for catching up with a glass of wine and light bites while enjoying the beautiful river views.

What Not To Miss: Sundowners at the rooftop with views over the city and the Tagus River
Location: Bairro Alto

Lisbon's original five-star boutique hotel was given a major upgrade in 2019 and now boasts 87 guest rooms housed in several historic ochre-hued buildings overlooking busy Praça Luís de Camões at the heart of downtown. Classic elegance rooted in Portuguese arts and crafts blended with modern comforts and amenities creates a tranquil yet upscale ambiance. The Chiado suite, with a separate living room and work areas and a sophisticated palette of terracotta and deep blues (not to mention the unobstructed views over the square), is definitely worth the splurge. The renovation, led by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Souto de Moura, also updated the hotel's food and beverage venues. The buzzy fifth-floor Bahr & Terrace is an all-day eatery popular among guests and locals for catching up with a glass of wine and light bites while enjoying the beautiful river views.

The property's seasonal outdoor pool and bar are a popular hangout spot during the warmer months.

Olissippo Lapa Palace

Tucked away on a hill in Lisbon's aristocratic neighborhood of Lapa, where embassies and palaces line the quaint streets, this grand 19th-century estate captivates guests with its regal interiors and lush gardens once roamed by the country's noblemen. Guest rooms, divided into three wings, are lavishly furnished with neo-classical pieces and Vista Alegre porcelain, but modern touches abound, too—marble bathrooms with double vanities and soaking tubs (some have hot tubs), L'Occitane toiletries, plush bathrobes and balconies with views over the Tagus River and the hotel's gardens. The property's seasonal outdoor pool and bar are a popular hangout spot during the warmer months, surrounded by lush plants, adding a feeling of privacy to the property. Another pool, this one indoor, is located at the spa level of the resort, where guests will also find a Turkish bath and a sauna.

Parents can leave their children in the kids' club and explore the area's many bars and restaurants.

All-Star Amenities: Fully-equipped kitchens; separate living room areas; balconies with views; cribs; indoor and outdoor pools; gym; kids club and play area; workspaces
What Not To Miss: A splash day by the pools
Location: Park of Nations

In 1998, Lisbon hosted the World Expo in an area along the Tagus River, just north of its historic downtown. After the event, the Parque das Nações (Park of the Nations) district was further revitalized with residential buildings and businesses and is now one of the most modern and family-friendly parts of the Portuguese capital. The contemporary Martinhal Lisbon Oriente sits in the middle of it all, within walking distance from some of the area's most notable museums and landmarks, such as the Oceanarium (one of the largest ones in Europe), the Pavilion of Knowledge (essentially, a science museum), many parks and sports facilities and a cable car.

Together with its perfect location, the property also offers everything families might need during their stay—the spacious apartment-like accommodations have modern interiors and kitchens and boast floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views over the district. Parents can leave their children in the kids' club and explore the area's many bars and restaurants (or catch a concert in the nearby MEO arena) or the whole family can spend an afternoon soaking up Vitamin D by the pools. Kids too tired to eat out? The property's on-site all-day restaurant serves Mediterranean and South Asian dishes and has a special menu for infants and toddlers.

In this stunning 18th-century building, guests are surrounded exclusively by furniture, textiles, bed linens and artwork produced in Portugal.

All-Star Amenities: Spa with a steam room and a sauna; a gym; a rooftop bar; a coffee shop; custom artwork and furniture made in Portugal; Claus Porto soaps; apartment-like guest rooms with kitchenettes and living rooms
What Not To Miss: Cocktails on the rooftop enjoying the spectacular views

This fantastic 47-key five-star boutique stay highlights Portuguese design. From the moment guests set foot in the bold black-and-white checkered lobby floor of the stunning 18th-century building, they are surrounded by furniture, textiles, bed linens, artwork, and even bath soap produced in Portugal. As a result, the property has a very homey, cozy feeling, as if you're moving into your private Portuguese home that happens to be in one of Lisbon's hippest neighborhoods. While there certainly isn't a bar and restaurant shortage in Bairro Alto, you might find yourself spending the evenings at the hotel's rooftop, contemplating life as the city unravels before your eyes. Also nice: the hotel's spa might not be the largest, but the intimate facility is big enough to help you relax and recharge after a day of sightseeing.

Head to the rooftop swimming pool and spend a lazy afternoon enjoying refreshing dips and beautiful views over the neighborhood.

Spend some time at the sauna and Turkish bath steam room before jumping in the ice fountain for an invigorating and detoxifying therapy. Craving some Vitamin D? Head to the rooftop swimming pool and spend a lazy afternoon enjoying refreshing dips and beautiful views over the neighborhood.

The renovated Sky Bar at the hotel's rooftop boasts unobstructed views of the entire city, remaining one of Lisbon's best—and chicest.

With its many monuments, museums, and grand palaces, the Belém district is one of the most scenic areas of Lisbon, nestled along the Tagus River, a short 10-minute train ride from the city's bustling downtown. It is also a much quieter and more serene alternative to the crowd-packed streets of its more central neighborhoods, where travelers enjoy scenic river views and explore its many seafood restaurants.

Inspired by Portugal's maritime heritage, also reflected in many of Belém's landmarks, Altis Belém Hotel & Spa delivers a distinctly modern experience rooted in history and traditions. Each of its 50 guest rooms references places around the globe where the country's explorers have sailed to during the Age of Discoveries. Striking "lace" panels cover the three-story building's facade and can be adjusted to keep the sun at bay, while the hotel's signature Michelin-starred restaurant serves plates of modern flavors inspired by the country's traditions.
