luxury travel south australia

Once a hidden gem of our native land, Adelaide and its awe-inspiring surrounds has become a favourite of the travelling foodies from all across the globe. Bubbling with incredible regional flavours and a buzzing cultural scene, it seems the little sister to Melbourne and Sydney, is all grown up.

Laying claim to world-renowned wineries, distilleries and breweries plus a slew of arguably Australia’s finest dining precincts — we recommend you add this city hotspot to your local getaway list before the international crowds fly in. In the mood for a little romance, a wild adventure or the finer sip? Forget Bordeaux darling — we’ve rounded up bold and bijou getaways from our nation’s wine region.

Sofitel Adelaide Adelaide

luxury travel south australia

White marble and oak, hello! The city’s flash new five-star hotel delivers all the romantic details the French are so notorious for. Having only just opened its doors this month in the CBD, the luxe 24-storey hotel riffs on French colonial meets the clean design lines our modern taste appreciates.

Take a moment to soak in the dazzling lobby chandelier surrounded by works from the lens of Australian fine-art photographer, Alexia Sinclair. Boasting 251 black-and-white toned rooms and a myriad of foodie delights including its very own champagne bar Déjà Vu and the chic, sun-drenched Club Millésime lounge where you can enjoy complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and a selection of desserts and evening drinks.

Make yourself at home in one of the 145 refined rooms with spa-inspired bathrooms and vibrant art pieces to add a bit of extra culture to your time in the Festival City. After a huge day exploring the galleries and stores, spend your evenings close to your room at the adjoined Merrymaker Rooftop Bar, knowing you can sleep in and be served brekky in bed the next morning with a generous à la carte menu packed full of healthy local ingredients.

The rolling green hills of the Fleurieu Peninsula and the beaches and trails of Kangaroo Island are a must-do for the active traveller, and pair nicely with some time indulging in the food and wine of the Barossa and Clare Valley. Other destinations we love are the Flinders Ranges and the Murray River , which while having entirely different landscapes, offer up equally impressive walk and wildlife experiences with conservation at their core. In the heart of Mount Gambier you can discover the aptly-named Blue Lake, the underground oasis, Umpherston Sinkhole, snorkel or dive the crystal-clear waters of the Kilsby Sinkhole or Piccaninnie Ponds. Top it off with wine from over 40 cellar stunning cellar doors steeped in Coonawarra history, and taste the flavours of Mayura Station Australia’s premium boutique beef producer. The Eyre Peninsula boasts fantastic food and wine, luxury accommodation and abundant wildlife, plus countless aquatic activities such as shark cage dives and swimming with sea lions off the coast of Port Lincoln. Visit Yorke Peninsula for soft, white-sand beaches which are perfect for bushwalking, surfing, swimming, boating and fishing.

With its raw and rugged coastline, impeccably clear waters, natural wonders and wildlife, Kangaroo Island is known as nature’s playground. Follow the road less travelled and discover unique wildlife, mouth-watering food and drink, breathtaking scenery and a laidback lifestyle.

Take the road less travelled or closer to home for a uniquely beautiful feast for the senses, where the escapes are wondrous. Feed your curiousity, brave the unfamiliar (or rediscover old favourites) and experience places for the curious of mind and adventurous in spirit. Whatever escape you desire, South Australia is perfect for those who want a little more.

Luxury Travel to South Australia

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

South Australia is vast state and contains a portion almost everything that makes Australian so unique and recognisable. From the great stretching vastness of the wild Australian Outback to the charm of wine valleys and beaches of silver sand, your stay will be a memorable one.

The capital of South Australia is Adelaide, a charming city that has developed differently from the rest of Australia’s major settlements due to it being founded as the planned capital of freely-settled British province in 1836. Regency and Victorian architectural styles are reflected in many of the historic buildings that line the streets and also in the museums, art galleries and other cultural centres. Sporting a Mediterranean climate, it is no stranger to warm summer sunshine and as such offers the cooling respite of spots such as Glenelg Beach, its waves ideal for a day out and a refreshing dip.

The city is a gateway to the Barossa Valley, an area that has become a famous wine region ever since Germans settlers brought grapes over to grow in this perfect climate. Now world-renowned, its lush green valleys and bountiful vineyards send guests into a pastoral dreamland. Boutique wineries and old cellars provide tastings in this, one of Australia’s oldest wine-producing regions. It is also filled with culinary delights such as artisanal cheese farmers, organic garden produce and fruit orchards, the many gourmet food markets proving to be a great way to interact with the laidback locals and your fellow visitors.

Alternatively, the Flinders Ranges to the state’s north are stark and picturesque, their heights reaching out from the green savannahs and red ochre stone of the great Outback. Gentle foothills lead up to remarkable mountains, the surrounding wilderness filled with trademark wildlife and flora. Learn about the ancient past and culture of the indigenous Aboriginal people through a local guide while journeying to the barren Lake Eyre or travelling to the thermal waters of Dalhousie Springs, used for millennia by native tribes.

South Australia has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The coast and outback heat up more than other areas in the summer. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant, the former bringing with it wildflowers and flourishing wildlife.

Luxury Vacations & Tours in Australia

Why should you travel to australia with us.

Back in 2003, the earliest idea of Black Tomato was dreamt up. And it happened on an Australian beach. You could say that it inspired everything we’ve done since.

The beach? Wineglass Bay, of course. These days, you’re more likely to find our founders on Lizard Island – with its 24 private beaches, all within diving distance of the Great Barrier Reef. When we got the company rolling, we decided to never lose sight of Australia. With over 15 years of contacts, local knowledge, and friendships, our bespoke itineraries to this golden, rich and rewarding country can truly deliver anything; from a chef’s-table tour of the picturesque Yarra Valley, blending your own wines under the tutelage of a Chief Winemaker, an exclusive ‘just you’ retreat at Kangaroo Island, or a private-plane transfer low over the bush toward a private camp in the Bamurru Plains. Anything is possible.

Example Australia trips

Ultimate australia: the icons, indonesia and australia: a luxury vacation of bali,…, southern discovery in australia, eater journeys: melbourne, south australia & victoria: a gourmet discovery, south australia: the epicurean way, south australia: perfect pairings, tasmania & south australia: a luxury coastal adventure, sydney, queensland & the great barrier reef: a…, coastal wilderness in western australia, queensland: a luxury escape to the great barrier…, create your own itinerary, what to see and do in australia.

As ever, if you can’t see it here then we can still plan it for you.

An irresistible concoction of unparalleled scenery, vibrant city-life, fine wines and active reefs, Australia is a place of dazzling discovery. One trip here and you’ll realize how much this country has to give, which is why our tailor-made tours to the land down under ensure your vacation flows seamlessly. For customizable itineraries including the best luxury hotels and most immersive tours – north, south, east, and west – you’ve come to the right location.

ALL ABOUT AUSTRALIA

Koala on eucalyptus tree in Australia

The Great Barrier Reef – a medley of vivid colors and dynamic wildlife that’s completely unique to Australia. Consisting of over 900 islands, there’s more than one way to experience this world wonder. Observe it from the air, opt for scuba diving, or embark on a guided snorkelling tour; the choice is yours. One more question though: can we still call it a sliver of paradise if it can be seen from space?

SNORKEL THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

Turtle searches corals on the Great Barrier Reef

Easily one of the most recognizable skylines in the world, Sydney is an oceanside city that puts others to shame. While it’s worth its weight in gold with dazzling galleries, upbeat beaches, and boutique restaurants, it’s the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge that steal the spotlight. For a heart-pounding experience, climb the Harbor Bridge for 360-degree views of the city.

WALK THE HARBOUR BRIDGE

Sydney harbour at sunset

Our best piece of advice? Jump in a car and prepare to witness the vista that tops all vistas. One of the most popular road trips in the word, the Great Ocean Road is home to rock-stacks protruding from the sea, rolling hills, and dramatic crashing waves. If we coined the term ‘open-road tranquility’, a breezy day on a journey to the 12 Apostles would be the accompanying photo.

Sydney & the blue mountains

Explore Australia’s iconic capital and the incredible range to its West.

Sparkling, sophisticated and confident, Sydney – backed by the range of the awe-inspiring Blue Mountains – embodies everything that is glamorous and modern about Australia. With a coastal path that stretches from Bondi to Coogee, the bustling harbor, the iconic Opera House, and trendy Newtown (with the eucalyptus forests, waterfalls and peaks of the National Park behind you), Sydney has much to offer.

The great barrier reef

It’s more than just a reef. It’s 1,900 reefs.

It is easy to throw out a cliche about the reef, that it is “out of this world.” But that wouldn’t be true. Here, from Lady Elliot Island and to the edge of New Guinea (some 2,300km away), the reef is an incredible and intricate labyrinth of cays, ribbons, islets, canyons and – of course – nature. You can sleep on private islands within diving distance of it (such as Kangaroo Island), or else take an expert-led tour of it by day. The nearby islands of the Whitsundays & Cairns offer an exotic stepping stone into this earthly paradise.

Melbourne (and beyond)

Art, culture and cuisine on Australia’s southeastern coast.

A theme emerges. That each great Australian city is paired with an incredible hinterland. For Melbourne, in Australia’s southeast, it’s the Mornington Peninsula and the Yarra Valley wine region). Trendy, easygoing, fun, Melbourne is all about plazas, bars, art and restaurants. In the Yarra Valley, we’ll pair you with expert sommeliers and local chefs to truly taste and sample the land that feeds this city.

When is the best time to visit Australia?

Australia is an enormous country and comes with a diverse range of environments, climates, and landscapes to discover. As a result, different regions have different weather throughout the year. The best time to go to Australia depends on what you’d like to experience on your journey. Your itinerary interests will influence when to visit Australia and our Travel Designers will help shape your journey accordingly.

High Season

High Season in Australia is between November to March. These months cover Australia’s summer school holidays, many popular festivals, and the End of Year Festive Period including Christmas and New Year’s Eve . Most travellers are found exploring the Southeast States of Australia in major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, or further afield in Tasmania, Adelaide, or Perth. Travel to the north during this time is usually not recommended due to being the Wet Season, bringing high humidity and storms.

Shoulder Seasons

Shoulder Seasons in Australia include March to May and September to October. These transitional seasons of Autumn (Fall) and Spring respectively are some of the best times to travel the entire country. During these seasons, both the southern and northern states alike offer temperate weather of clear days and cool nights without any dramatic peaks or valleys, with the northern states in particular offering pleasantly consistent and dry weather due to being situated on either side of their respective Wet or Dry Seasons.

The Low Season in Australia is between June to August. These months offers some of the strongest contrasts in climate. The southern states are often cool and cloudy and have fewer crowds, making this the perfect time to enjoy intimate and laidback encounters. Uluru-Kata Tjuta, the Outback including the Northern Territory’s Top End and Western Australia’s Kimberley, and the Great Barrier Reef all experience peak travel during this season, with sunshine and moderate temperatures offering the perfect environment to explore.

Top Places to Visit on a Tour to Australia

We specialise in creating bespoke itineraries and five-star Australia tours which perfectly suit your interests, budget, and needs. Australia’s major attractions can easily be incorporated into one comprehensive itinerary, depending on your preferred months of travel. These beautiful places to visit are also home to major tourist attractions.

Stretching from as far south as the Whitsundays to as far north as the Torres Strait Islands , the natural aquatic wonder of the Great Barrier Reef is best visited between April and October. The Dry Season and peak time to travel is between June to October with clear days, less rain, and migratory whale watching opportunities. Many destinations in these regions shut down over the Wet Season (November – March) due to stingers and monsoons.

Best Time of Year to Visit: April to October

Top end and the kimberley.

Home to sprawling Australian ranches and cattle stations, dramatic National Park and rich Aboriginal cultures, the Top End in the Northern Territory and the Kimberley of Western Australia are both found in the tropical north of Australia. This area is split between the Dry Season and Wet Season. The Dry Season between June to September is peak time to travel, offering clear and stable weather to explore the landscapes. Some shoulder season travel is possible on the tail-end of the Wet Season, but many destinations in these regions shut down over the peak of the Wet Season (December – February).

Best Time of Year to Visit: June to September

The outback.

Australia’s vast interior and home to Uluru-Kata Tjuta , South Australia’s Flinders Ranges , and dramatic mountain ranges in New South Wales, Queensland and beyond. The Outback is best visited within April to October, when the daytime weather is cooler and Australia’s wildlife is more active, while clear nights provide outstanding opportunities to stargaze.

Southeast Australia

Home to Australia’s most developed and urban areas, the lush and cool southeast houses most of the Australian population and covers major cities from Brisbane , Sydney , Melbourne , stretching to Adelaide in the west and down to Tasmania in the south. Each region offers its own rich cultural and city offerings, while several cities are close to wine-growing areas populated with outstanding Australian vineyards in regions like the Barossa Valley , McLaren Vale, and Adelaide Hills in South Australia, the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, and Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley in Victoria.

Best Time of Year to Visit: All year around

Southwest australia.

One of the most remote urban environments in the world, Australia’s southwest is a laidback region with outstanding surf, the Margaret River wine region, and rich natural biodiversity. Perth is the major city and is a popular port from which to explore further north to Broome and the Kimberley, to as far as the Christmas Islands.

Best Ways to Travel in Australia

Your trip to Australia can take many different shapes, depending on your preferred methods of travel, interests, budgets, who you’re travelling with, timeframe, and many other factors. Each of our journeys is fully customised to you, ensuring absolute flexibility and peace of mind to suit your specific travel interests—whether it’s a family friendly multi-generational holiday to remember, a romantic getaway for two, or a small group of friends being led by expert guides.
