Stevie Nicks

New book examines remarkable talents of Stevie Nicks

Music historian simon morrison explores the songwriting craft of stevie nicks in his new biography mirror in the sky and answers questions for stevie nicks info.

Fall is turning out to be an exciting time for Stevie Nicks fans. At the start of September, Stevie kicked off the next leg of her 2022 amphitheatre/festival-circuit tour and, today, she released the fantastic new song, “ For What It’s Worth .” Now, fans can peruse a new book on their favorite subject, the biography Mirror in the Sky: The Life and Music of Stevie Nicks by music historian Simon Morrison, out October 4 th in hardcover.

Unlike previous biographies, which largely recounted highlights of Stevie’s long, storied career, Morrison takes a different approach. While he still includes all the important facts (Stevie’s Bay Area beginnings, chaotic tenure in Fleetwood Mac , Bella Donna backstory, etc.), his narrative centers on Stevie’s remarkable gifts as a songwriter, musical artist, and visionary, which have been historically downplayed by journalists and even her musical partners.

Just ahead of the biography’s hardcover release (the Kindle Book was released earlier this month), Simon Morrison answered some questions for STEVIE NICKS INFO , sharing his motivation for writing about the iconic Stevie Nicks, insights gained from studying her famous demos, and why he thinks she is deserving of the Nobel Prize.

Mirror in the Sky

STEVIE NICKS INFO: As a cultural historian specializing in Russia, modernism, and ballet, you took a curious interest in a seemingly random subject, at least on the surface. What motivated you to write a book about this American rock star?

SIMON MORRISON: Yes, there’s seemingly little connection between writing about ballet and Russia and Stevie (aside from Fleetwood Mac’s efforts to tour in the Soviet Union and Stevie’s ballet lessons!). But I’ve listened to her music since I was a child and welcomed the opportunity to finally write about her. I did so because my experience with her music, and I’m sure the experiences of most of her fans with her music, did not align with what journalists have said about her. I consider her to be one of the finest songwriters of the past half-century and wanted to make that argument while also correcting some misperceptions and filling in the biography.

How much did you know about Stevie Nicks, the person and now-revered rock and roll icon, prior to writing your book?

I knew most of her solo records, Rumours , and Tusk the best. I also read the (Stephen) Davis biography, which doesn’t much engage with her music, and I followed the discussions of her career, the ups and downs of the 70s and 80s and her “resurgence” (to quote Amanda Petrusich) in the 90s and the last two decades both as inspiration to other singers and spiritual resource to her fans.

Were there any hurdles, logistically or legally, getting your book published?

Not really. University of California Press expressed an interest in a book about Stevie and I sent in a proposal that combined a biography of the songwriter and a biography of the songs. Raina Polivka and Kim Robinson at the press were immensely supportive. I pestered a lot of people in Stevie’s world for interviews, and most of them obliged me, assuming that I was going to write something respectful and positive. As to the artist herself, I made sure she was aware of the project and the approach. When I dug up some little-known facts about her musical upbringing – where she sang with her grandfather, for example – I sent it her way.

For your research, you communicated with a number of people who have worked closely with Stevie on her music, such as music mogul Danny Goldberg and producers Ken Caillat and Rick Nowels. I’d imagine they had nothing but glowing praise for her. Was there a common theme about Stevie, her music, or creative process that emerged from those interviews?

All of them greatly admire her, but the amount of time they spent with her and in what contexts they worked together differed. Caillat’s experience was the late 70s. Nowels, a childhood friend, reconnected with her toward the mid-80s. Goldberg helped motivate her solo career. She’s personally closer to Irving Azoff, going to movie nights at his place, but I didn’t reach out to Azoff given that my focus is less on the music business than what happened in the studio. That said, Fleetwood Mac’s lawyer Mickey Shapiro was fun to meet. As to common themes, I’d say it was the warmth of her personality, her generosity even in trying circumstances, and her intuitive musical gifts. Also her overcoming of some bad behavior from her bandmates and the fact that not all of her music got the respect and attention it deserved in the studio. When she became an iconic solo artist that all changed, of course, but there’s an awful lot of music on the cutting room floor, so to speak.

Danny Goldberg

Your research on Rhiannon and the Mabinogion stories is quite fascinating. Perhaps your book will finally get that Rhiannon movie made! In your book, you suggest that Stevie may have had more knowledge of the Rhiannon legend than she initially led on, perhaps on a subconscious level; it all seems to be connected. Do you think Stevie was creating a rock-star version of Rhiannon fashioned after the legend? Today, the kids would call that a superhero.

Great question. Her on-stage persona has a lot of layers (think of the wondrous shawls), just as her songs do, but Rhiannon provided her first and most famous identity. Stevie absorbed country music, torch songs, the blues, Janis Joplin, and burlesque theater (“Cat House Blues”) growing up, yet sought a different, meaning distinct, identity for herself as a performer, one that reached into the mystical past, which she treats seriously. She’s drawn to paganism, legend, myth. Her lyrics refer to ancient tales, some told to her by her grandmother, and when she came across Rhiannon she found the perfect figure to embody, channel, and reincarnate.

Stevie Nicks

You studied the musical elements used to create some of Stevie’s most recognizable songs, everything from the chord structure to key relationships. This narrative plays a key role (pun intended) in your book. Share your thoughts about what you uncovered?

If you compare the demo versions of her most famous songs with the recorded versions you first notice their length. The drafts are much longer than the final cut. That can be a good thing, but much is lost, and the act of compressing the music became, in the studio, an act of repression. Filigreed detail, unusual harmonic turns and modal inflections also disappeared. Buckingham busied up the backgrounds at the expense of the foreground of “Sara,” for example. Still, songs like “Bella Donna” and “Rock a Little” retain the ruminative, meditative detours of their first iteration, the departures from conventional chords and sturdy forms where Stevie most distinctly “speaks.” She transformed as an artist from expressing herself (which was unusual in the seventies) to expressing her dialogues with herself, truly opening up to her audience.  Those dialogues are preserved in the demos.

Stevie Nicks

In interviews, Stevie has indicated a clear preference towards the rawness and simplicity of her demos. When producers get involved, they sometimes end up making a mess of things and cause tension between them and the artist. In comparing her demos with the completed recordings, do you have any advice for future producers who may arrange and interpret her songs?

I frankly think that the producer should be a she, and someone Stevie trusts. There still are too few women producers in the major studios, and that situation needs to change. She worked some with Sheryl Crow, and has done production work of her own, and I personally would be thrilled if she and Taylor Swift got together at the console. Stevie can record what she wants, how she wants, and she’s freed herself from corporate branding by defining it. The “rawness and simplicity” of the demos should, I think, be preserved, with some of the intonations amplified and the vocals and piano-guitar accompaniments processed so that they sound great on all our devices.

Sheryl Crow Stevie Nicks Ace Theatre Los Angeles December 4 2019

Since the 1980s, fans have learned a great deal about Stevie’s songwriting process by listening to her unreleased demos, many of which have surfaced on social media in recent years. You examined some interesting ones for your book, such as “Joan of Arc” from the Rock a Little sessions. What intrigued you about this demo?

It’s a raw, tough, penetrating song that blends images and scenes from her own life with the legend, of fantasy, of an iconic woman of the past. That blend is key to her art, I think, the tripping over from the real to the dreamed or imagined to the mythic. I took the lyrics to an expert on the Joan of Arc legend, and he was struck by the canniness of Stevie’s interpretation. The lullaby strains, the dark cave spookiness of the background, and the move she makes from velvety whisper to defiance in her voice is perfect for the subject matter. Likewise the dissolve into fragmented recitation before the song reasserts itself as a musical act of defiance about a defiant historical figure. For the life of me I don’t understand why it wasn’t fully realized and produced on a record – even “Songs from the Vault” – it’s so great.

stevie nicks tour books

Your biography is one of the first to delve into the devoted Stevie Nicks “fandom,” with a concluding chapter on the long-running, annual Night of 1000 Stevies drag show extravaganza in New York and an appendix listing some popular and elusive fansites . How do Stevie Nicks fans fit into the narrative you’ve presented in your book?

She’s a huge part of the lives of so many people, around the world, offering comfort and wisdom and beauty to all of us. Hard truths too. Think of the importance of “Landslide”: that song has gotten people through so much. I most admire the space and importance she assigns to female imaginings. I have a (soon to be) teenage daughter and have learned that teenage girls are bad ass – and I’m all for that. I think that if this culture of ours had its head and heart right Stevie Nicks would have received a Nobel Prize for her lyrics. That’s a long way of saying that, while she obviously composed her songs, they belong to her fans, and mean specific and special things to people that she might not have intended but she respects and admires. Such is the consequence of lyrical and musical multivalence! She’s very devoted to her fans and I wanted to acknowledge that in the book. Sites like yours also provided rich insight into her music, how it resonates, why it matters so much.

Night of a Thousand Stevies

Do you teach any courses on Stevie Nicks at Princeton?

Not exclusively about her, but she’s been part of lectures I’ve given about songwriting, and I once asked our graduate students to analyze “Storms” as part of a music theory exam!

Ingrid Andress Books Tour Stops with Stevie Nicks

by Cillea Houghton May 31, 2023, 2:54 pm

Ingrid Andress is set to relive one of her biggest life dreams, as she’s opening for Stevie Nicks in 2023.

Videos by American Songwriter

Andress will open for the music icon for a handful of dates in the summer and fall, beginning on August 8 in Milwaukee, followed by stops in Houston on August 12, San Diego on November 29, Los Angeles on December 2 and Palm Springs on December 5.

Get your tickets here .

“Opening for my absolute hero never gets old,” Andress raved on Instagram . “Cannot wait to warm y’all up for @stevienicks !!!!! what is my life?!?!”

This isn’t the first time the “More Hearts Than Mine” singer has opened for Nicks. The Fleetwood Mac singer invited Andress to open for her in 2022 during her June 21 show at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. In a lengthy Instagram post , Andress shared photos of herself poised at the piano in front of a crowd of 22,000 people and shared how Nicks has inspired her as a songwriter.

“I can’t put into words how magical this night was for me,” Andress wrote. “Or how it magically came about. But I can describe how inspired I was walking away from this show. It’s been a minute since I’ve witnessed something as timeless as this powerful woman, and it gave me so much hope.

“She doesn’t apologize for who she is, and doesn’t put herself in a genre box,” she continued. “She’s worked hard and is just her, saying the things she wants to say in a beautiful way, and putting it together with melodies we will never forget. And that, my darlings, is artistry. Thank you, Stevie. I wanna be you when I grow up.”

Andress recently concluded her headlining The Good Person Tour in support of her most recent album, Good Person. It features her hit collaboration with Sam Hunt, “Wishful Drinking.”

Stevie Nicks says she plans to release a ‘secret’ book of poems that never became songs

Stevie Nicks just announced she's getting her own Barbie , but she says her plans for the future don't stop there.

The Fleetwood Mac singer, 75, tells TODAY.com she wants to continue performing for the next few years, before doing some of the things she hasn't been able to do while she's been on tour — including releasing a poetry collection.

"I never write songs. They're always poems. They're on paper and I don't look at them as songs, I look at them as poems," she says. "If they work themselves into being a song, then I'm really happy. If they don't, they're going to go into that secret poetry book that I will someday release. I have all of the songs, before they were songs, so they're slightly different."

For now, fans can only imagine what some of the stories behind those poems may be.

Nicks and Fleetwood Mac were recently part of the inspiration behind author Taylor Jenkins Reid's hit 2019 novel "Daisy Jones & the Six." The book was also adapted into a series and released on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, and Reid revealed in a blog post that Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's real-life relationship and how it played out in Fleetwood Mac loosely inspired one of the main relationships in the book.

Nicks shared her thoughts on social media after watching "Daisy Jones & the Six," saying she felt "like a ghost" watching her own story.

"In the beginning, it wasn’t really my story, but Riley seamlessly, soon became my story," Nicks wrote in August about Riley Keough , who portrayed the main character and one of the lead singers, Daisy Jones.

Fleetwood Mac

"It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story," she continued, adding she wished Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie, who died in 2022 , could have seen the show.

"She would have loved it," Nicks wrote, concluding with: "Hopefully it will continue..."

The singer also recently joined the ranks of artists like Tina Turner, Elton John, Gloria Estevan and David Bowie who have been honored with a Music Signature Series Barbie and says it took just two prototypes to perfect the re-creation of the iconic outfit she wore for Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" cover art for the Barbie doll.

She says she received the first doll in March and asked Mattel to make her face rounder and give her eye makeup a bit more of a Twiggy-esque edge. She unboxed the second doll by June, which she says was "perfect."

"She’s the 'Rumours' me, when I was 29 years old. But she’s also me now. It sounds impossible, but it’s not impossible somehow," she says of her doll. "Maybe that’s just the spirit of her — the spirit of Stevie Barbie and the spirit of me, blended together in this little person and it just emanates from her."

Nicks says she wrote down all of the reasons she loves her Barbie before our interview, and proceeds to list them off — one of the reasons being that the doll helps her unlock memories from her past.

"First of all, it’s like seeing my younger self. She brings back memories that I had forgotten. When I look at her I think of stuff that has gone out of my mind," Nicks says.

She adds: "She’s the memory and she’s the present — and everything in between."

Nicks' Barbie also seems to inspire her to think about the future. The singer explains she's spent most of her life on tour and says she sees herself continuing to travel from city to city to perform for her fans for the next five to six years.

Then, she muses on what may come next for her.

"When I look at (Barbie) and when I look at myself, I’ll probably tour for another four or five years and then I’ll probably decide to rent a castle in Scotland and go and write, in a whole kind of romantic way, and sit in front of a big, huge, massive fireplace and maybe get a huge wolfhound," Nicks says. "And have somebody else train it for me and deliver it at six months, fully trained, and then I’ll be sitting there with my huge dog."

Nicks reveals there is one person — or animal — in her life who may not love the wolfhound element. "I have a tiny Chinese crested right now, who is really jealous of Barbie," she says with a laugh.

Stevie Nicks' OKC March 30 concert postponed due to COVID-19, new date set

stevie nicks tour books

Stevie Nicks is postponing her upcoming Oklahoma City and New Orleans shows due to continued illness with COVID-19 within her band.

Originally scheduled for March 30, the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's Oklahoma City show now is slated for April 11 at Paycom Center, the venue announced Tuesday .

Nicks' planned April 2 concert in New Orleans has been rescheduled for April 15 at the city's Smoothie King Center.

Last week, Nicks, 74, had to postpone two Northern California shows on her solo tour due to COVID illness within her band. Those dates have not yet been rescheduled, according to Ticketmaster.

Nicks previously played the Oklahoma City arena as part of the legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac in 2003 and 2015 . The upcoming Paycom Center concert is believed to be her first solo show at the downtown Oklahoma City venue, after her 2016-2017 "24 Karat Gold Tour" routed through Tulsa and played the BOK Center .

With her solo induction in 2019, Nicks became the first woman to be twice ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, having previously joined the fabled Rock Hall in 1998 as part of Fleetwood Mac .

Nicks also is touring stadiums this year with fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Billy Joel . The next date on their co-headlining "Two Icons – One Night Only" trek is scheduled for April 8 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas .

Surprise! Stevie Nicks plays a special role on Taylor Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department

The singers have a history leading up to their latest collaboration.

stevie nicks tour books

Just call them the Chairmen of the Tortured Poets Department.

For the first time ever, someone other than Taylor Swift has written the prologue to a Taylor Swift album. In this case, it's none other than music icon — and fellow tortured poet — Stevie Nicks .

That's right: When fans crack open their vinyl copy of The Tortured Poets Department , they will be treated to an introductory poem by the Fleetwood Mac legend in its insert.

Addressed "For T — and me," the handwritten poem is like Swift's prologues before it, with Nicks' elegant words setting the stage for what will follow: more songs about heartbreak. It reads:

He was in love with her Or at least she thought so She was brokenhearted ~Maybe he was too~ Neither of them knew. She was way too hot to handle He was way too high to try — He couldn't even see her He wouldn't open his eyes She was on her way to the stars He didn't say goodbye

She looked back from her future And shed a few tears He looked into his past And actually felt fear. For both of them The answers ~ would never be ~ Ever clear — Don't ask questions now Do that later — She brings joy He brings Shakespeare — It's almost a tragedy — Says she "don't endanger me — [Pause] Don't endanger me"

He really can't answer her He's afraid of her — He's hiding from her And he knows that he's hurting her She tells the truth She writes about it She's an informer He's an x-lover There's nothing there for her She's already gone There's nothing that can stop her — She was just flying — Thru the clouds ~ When he saw her... She was just making her way — To the stars ~ When he lost her...

This departure from Swift's previous releases (and the fabulous cameo!) will shock some fans. But fret not — a poem written by Swift herself closes the insert of the album, which is also a first in the Swiftie Universe.

But there's more: Nicks' name pops up again in the album, in the track "Clara Bow." She is one of the "It" girls its subject is compared to: "'You look like Stevie Nicks / In '75 / The hair and lips / Crowd goes wild at her fingertips / Half moonshine / A full eclipse."

So how exactly did this collaboration come to pass? Swift and Nicks are still mum on the details (so far), but the two have a long history of supporting each other.

The artists performed on stage together at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards in 2010, singing Fleetwood Mac's classic "Rhiannon" and Swift's "You Belong With Me." In a Time magazine dedication that same year, Nicks wrote that Swift reminded her of herself, giving her this high praise: "Taylor is writing for the universal woman and for the man who wants to know her. The female rock-'n'-roll-country-pop songwriter is back, and her name is Taylor Swift. And it's women like her who are going to save the music business."

Last year, Nicks revealed during a performance for her tour that Swift's Midnights track "You're on Your Own, Kid" provided her comfort as she grieved her late Fleetwood Mac bandmate, Christine McVie . “Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing this thing for me, and that is writing a song called 'You're on Your Own, Kid,'" Nicks said at the time. "That is the sadness of how I feel."

Last October, not long after she wrote her poem for TTPD , Nicks opened up to Today about what she thinks Swift has gained from her body of work.

“I never don’t tell the truth. And I think that’s something that if Taylor Swift, who is my friend, if Taylor got anything from me, that’s what she got,” Nicks told the outlet. “I don’t ever lie in my songs — if you broke up with me, I don’t put I broke up with you. I tell the truth, always.”

Perhaps prophetically, in that same interview Nicks teased that she has a secret book of poems that never became songs, which she plans to release someday.

But for now, Nicks has cemented her place in Swiftian lore. And she feels right at home.

The Tortured Poets Department is out now.

I Genuinely Can't Listen To Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department" The Same Way Again After Reading These 15 Facts

With 31 songs on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology , it's Taylor Swift's longest album to date.

Nora Dominick

BuzzFeed Staff

1. First, Taylor Swift told fans at an Eras Tour concert in Tokyo that she'd been working on The Tortured Poets Department "for about two years." She added, "I kept working on it throughout the US tour, and when it was perfect, in my opinion — when it was good enough for you — I finished it."

Taylor announced her 11th studio album after winning Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights   at the 2024 Grammy Awards . Telling the crowd at the same Tokyo concert, she said she "had this plan" to announce the album if she was "lucky" enough to get on stage and accept an award, but only shared it with a few people, including Jack Antonoff . Her backup plan if she didn't win a Grammy Award that night was to announce the album at the Tokyo show.

2. When Taylor announced the title, The Tortured Poets Department , some debated the grammatical correctness of "Poets" instead of styling it "Poets'" or "Poet's." The title is styled like the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society , which starred Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, who also appear in the music video for "Fortnight."

Josh Charles and Ethan Hawke in Dead Poets Society vs Taylor Swift's music video for "Fortnight"

Fans also speculated that The Tortured Poets Department  was inspired by Joe Alwyn, Andrew Scott, and Paul Mescal's reported group chat name, "The Tortured Man Club."

3. The album cover for The Tortured Poets Department was shot by photographer Beth Garrabrant , who previously took photos for Folklore, Evermore, Red (Taylor's Version), Midnights , Speak Now (Taylor's Version) , and 1989 (Taylor's Version) .

For the TTPD  album cover, Taylor was styled by Joseph Cassell, and she reportedly wears YSL and The Row — Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen's brand — on the cover. Lorrie Turk did Taylor's makeup, while Jemma Muradian did her hair.

4. With a total of 31 songs on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology , it's Taylor's longest album . Previously, her longest album was Red (Taylor's Version) , which has 30 songs.

After releasing The Tortured Poets Department  at midnight ET on April 19, Taylor then dropped a surprise additional 15 songs that make up The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology .

5. The spoken voice heard in "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart" is producer Oli Jacobs, who produced several tracks on the album. Oli can be heard counting Taylor in, which is reminiscent of a click track that performers hear in their earpieces when performing live.

In an Instagram post about TTPD , Oli thanked Taylor, Jack, and Laura Sisk for working with him on the album, adding, "The greatest team anyone could ever ask to be a part of." Fans believe the click track-like sound on this one is in reference to Taylor's breakup with Joe Alwyn coinciding with her performing on the opening leg of the Eras Tour.

6. Taylor said that she wrote "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" while "sitting at the piano in one of those moments when I felt bitter about just all the things we do to our artists as a society and as a culture." She wrote the song alone, too.

She added in the Amazon Music commentary for the track, "What do we do to our writers, and our artists, and our creatives? We put them through hell. We watch what they create, then we judge it. We love to watch artists in pain, often to the point where I think sometimes, as a society, we provoke that pain, and we just watch what happens."

7. For "Clara Bow," which is named after the famous silent film actor, Taylor explained that the track is "a commentary on what I've seen in the industry that I've been in over time." She added that the reason she name drops Clara Bow and Stevie Nicks in the song is a reference to her being told "you know, you remind us of" by various record labels when she was starting out.

Taylor continued, saying , "And that’s how we teach women to see themselves, as like you could be the new replacement for this woman who’s done something great before you. I picked women who have done great things in the past and have been these archetypes of greatness in the entertainment industry. Clara Bow was the first ‘it girl.’ Stevie Nicks is an icon and an incredible example for anyone who wants to write songs and make music."

8. Speaking about "Clara Bow," the actor's great-granddaughter said , "My family and I love the song and are thankful for Taylor connecting with Clara's legacy through her songwriting." Clara was an actor in the silent film era of the 1920s and was given the nickname "The It Girl." She's also considered the first Hollywood sex symbol.

Clara's other great-granddaughter also added , "It’s really remarkable for Clara to be back in the media attention, 100 years later. That’s a testament to her legacy. I hope this inspires the younger generation to learn about Clara's story and feel inspired by her perseverance."

9. In the Amazon Music commentary for "Florida!!!" (feat. Florence + the Machine), Taylor said that the inspiration for the track actually came from "always watching Dateline ." She added, "People have these crimes that they commit; where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida."

She continued, saying , "They try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in. I think when you go through a heartbreak, there’s a part of you that thinks, 'I want a new name. I want a new life. I don't want anyone to know where I've been or know me at all.'"

10. In the album's liner notes for "Florida!!!" (feat. Florence + the Machine), Emily Jean Stone, aka actor Emma Stone, is credited with "oddities" on the track. While it's unclear right now what "oddities" means, some fans have pointed out the similarities between Taylor's TTPD aesthetic and Emma's costumes in Poor Things .

This isn't the first time Emma has been linked to a song by Taylor. When Speak Now (Taylor's Version)  was released in 2023, the song "When Emma Falls in Love" was rumored to be about Emma. The duo have been friends since 2008.

11. Speaking about "Fortnight" featuring Post Malone, Taylor explained that this song "exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout the album. One of which being fatalism — longing, pining away, lost dreams."

"I think that it's a very fatalistic album in that there are lots of very dramatic lines about life or death," Taylor added . "'I love you, it's ruining my life.' These are very hyperbolic, dramatic things to say. It's that kind of album."

12. Stevie Nicks, who is mentioned in "Clara Bow," penned a poem for Taylor on Aug. 13, 2023, which is featured as the prologue in physical copies of the album. In Oct. 2023, Stevie talked about Taylor in an interview, saying, "I never don't tell the truth. And I think that's something that if Taylor Swift, who is my friend, if Taylor got anything from me, that's what she got."

Stevie continued, saying, "I don't ever lie in my songs — and if you broke up with me, I don't put I broke up with you. I tell the truth, always." Stevie and Taylor first crossed paths in 2010 when they performed at the Grammy Awards together, which Taylor reportedly called a "fairy tale and an honor."

13. Following the release of "The Black Dog," fans began to flock to a London pub named The Black Dog because of the lyrics: "And so I watch as you walk / Into some bar called The Black Dog." One video posted to the pub's TikTok has over 600,000 views and counting. They even posted a video joking that they are trying to figure out if Taylor is referring to Joe Alwyn or Matty Healy in the song.

Amy Crowley, who is the pub's marketing consultant, said , "To now get that sort of international level of recognition is surreal, but it's lots of fun. It's been a bit of a whirlwind, but we're enjoying it." Swifties also asked the bar if they would sell merch, and they've listened .

14. In the song "The Tortured Poets Department," Taylor sings, "I laughed in your face and said / 'You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith / This ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots.'" And Patti posted her appreciation for being included in the song on her Instagram, writing , "This is saying I was moved to be mentioned in the company of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Thank you Taylor."

The Hotel Chelsea, which is mentioned in the song alongside Patti and Dylan, references the renowned hotel in Manhattan where both Dylan and Patti lived. Patti notably wrote about her time at the hotel in her book Just Kids .

15. And finally, The Tortured Poets Department is the first album in Spotify history to have more than 300 million streams in a single day on April 19, 2024.

On the same day, "Fortnight" (feat. Post Malone) also became Spotify's most-streamed song in a single day.
