Where can I go on a mini cruise in 2023 & 2024
Amsterdam, netherlands.
A true capital of culture, Amsterdam is a must-see city. Navigate its Golden age canals, explore the 'Dutch' way by bike, take in its vibrant arts scene, or venture out of the city and explore the Netherland's beautiful countryside and charming villages on our Amsterdam mini cruises.
Visit the Flower Auction at Aalsmeer
Immerse yourself in the fragrant aromas and dazzling colors, and learn about the sophisticated sorting process on the auction floor where millions of flowers are bought and sold daily.
Explore Amsterdam by boat
Amsterdam has more than 160 canals and 1,500 bridges and there's nothing like seeing a city from the water. Discover the central canal area, or “Canal Belt,” which was built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, gliding by 400 year old warehouses, mansions and historic churches.
Discover iconic museums and galleries
Amsterdam has museums and galleries for every interest. From the Van Gogh museum boasting the largest collection of paintings by the artist to Anne Frank's house, to lesser know gems such as Electric Ladyland, dedicated to flourescent art.
Bruges, Belgium
Cities don’t get much prettier than Bruges. Picture quaint cobbled lanes, fairy tale spires and mirror-like canals; a place where photogenic market squares give way to networks of secretive streets. Of course, don't forget to sample the region's signature beer and chocolate on a short cruise to Bruges.
Learn the art of chocolate making
Explore the charming old city of Ghent and delve into the history and production of the culinary staple it is most known for – chocolate. Best of all, you’ll be treated to a delicious tasting and demonstration.
Discover Bruges city highlights
Wander the streets of the old town, a UNESCO world heritage site, past the famous Belfry Tower and Market Square and Burg Square, the focal point of life in ancient Bruges. Climb all 366 steps to the top of the Belfry Bell Tower and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city. For a different perspective sit back and relax as you weave through the city's canals to take in the sights.
Cycle to Damme
Begin your journey in the scenic city center before leaving the city behind to journey into the magnificent Flemish countryside. As you make your way to Damme near the Dutch border, you'll pass charming villages, ride under the shade of lush trees, admire countryside farms, and view Belgium's windmills.

Why a mini cruise?
A mini-cruise is ideal if you are not yet sure whether a longer cruise is right for you or if you have a new cruise line in mind and want to experience some of the things it has to offer. Starting at the harbour you then sail (usually at night) towards the destination. During the day you stop at interesting ports in between and have enough time there for sightseeing, shopping or culinary delights.
Although these trips are much shorter, usually about 3 or 4 days, than on a normal trip, you still have all the amenities such as restaurants, bars, entertainment programs, sports activities and much more available. So you get to know the cruise line on a short cruise and know immediately if it suits you. With minimal effort you can appreciate what cruising has to offer.
Mini cruise worldwide
Taster cruises are offered worldwide, so you are not bound to a particular departure ports. How about a Caribbean cruise , if you have planned a longer vacation there anyway? So you can ideally combine your holiday with a little taster trip. Even Mediterranean cruises and Asia cruises are available. Be inspired to experience the delights of cruising!

Short & sweet: 8 best mini cruises in 2023 & 2024
Mini cruise holidays are becoming much more popular with younger travellers looking to squeeze their getaways into a long weekend – here are eight of the best in 2023 and 2024.
Words by Jeannine Williamson
Short on time, money or simply want a getaway break to unwind? A mini cruise ticks all these boxes. It’s also a great way of dipping a proverbial toe in the water if you’re new to a life at sea, or trying out a cruise line for the first time.
The quickest way to get afloat is on a short cruise from Southampton, or you can head overseas to get your mini cruise fix. Here are some of the options.
Speedy Greek getaway Celestyal Cruises mini cruise
Fancy seeing the most sun-drenched and Instagrammable Greek islands but don’t have oodles of time? You can do it with Celestyal Cruises.
The budget-friendly Greek line has three- and four-night mini cruises that are big on sights. In fact, you’ll likely see more than many people do in a week staying on land.
The round-trip sailings from Athens visit places like uber-trendy Mykonos – keep your eyes peeled and you may well spot some celebs – and the sun-bleached showstopper Santorini.
If you’re feeling a bit more cultural you can explore ancient sites on your mini cruise as well. Back onboard, Celestyal ships provide an extension of the friendly, laid-back Greek lifestyle. They’re not at all stuffy and you can strut your stuff at Greek dance classes, emboldened by the drinks that are included in the fare.
Channel Island hop MSC Cruises mini cruise
Take a two-night mini cruise to Guernsey out of Southampton on MSC Cruises’ big, bold and blingy MSC Virtuosa.
You’ll spend a day in the compact capital St Peter Port where the waterfront is lined with bars and places to eat. Don’t leave without ordering some ice cream made with creamy milk from the island’s doe-eyed golden cows.
On the ship you can sashay up glittering staircases studded with thousands of Swarovski crystals, shop ‘til you drop in designer boutiques and order a drink from Rob , who presides over the Starship Club and is the first humanoid robotic bartender at sea. There are dates to choose from in 2024.
Paint the town red Virgin Voyages mini cruise
Enjoy full-on adult-only fun (wink, wink) on a four-night round-trip sailing from Miami with Virgin Voyages . Virgin revolutionised cruising with ships that reinvented dining , with a street food-style food court, funky cabins with hammocks on the balcony and amazing Rock Star suites equipped with guitars and tables designed to dance on.
Scarlet Lady is a child-free ship where late-night revellers can throw moves in the outsize nightclub, The Manor, and watch festival-like pop-up acts around the vessel.
There’s a stop in cosmopolitan Key West on these mini cruises and a day at Virgin’s private Beach Club in Bimini where you can dive, snorkel or simply chill out in a cabana with another cocktail.
Stylish sundowners Marella Cruises mini cruise
If you can make your holiday stretch to five nights take a look at Marella Cruises ’ Mediterranean Sunsets sailings on Marella Explorer.
The ship has a bumper batch of 10 bars, including the Indigo Bar which is the longest in the Marella fleet , so you can pick your perfect spot for a sundowner. The sailing from Corfu to Malaga includes calls at Alicante and in between there are two days at sea to kick back and enjoy all the onboard attractions.
The lively entertainment scene stretches into the early hours with silent discos and eighties and nineties-themed nights. Other haunts include The Lounge with its colour-changing bar and hot pink piano.
It’s such a perfect day Royal Caribbean mini cruise
Escape the British winter and January blues to soak up some Caribbean sunshine on one of Royal Caribbean’s four-night Bahamas and Perfect Day mini cruises out of Miami.
After a stop in Nassau, where the Straw Market near the docking spot is a great place to pick up inexpensive hats, bags and jewellery, there’s the Perfect Day at CocoCay . Royal Caribbean’s 120-acre private island is jam-packed with things to do including a waterpark where thrill seekers can tackle Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest slide in North America.
The fun continues back on Freedom of the Seas with its FlowRider surf simulator and glow-in-the-dark laser tag area Clash for the Crystal City. There’s a sailing on January 8, 2024, with similar itineraries available year-round.
Chocs away Celebrity Cruises mini cruise
Get your fill of Belgian waffles, chocolate and a glass or two of one of the country’s 1,500 different beers on a four-day mini cruise from Southampton with Celebrity Cruises .
You can also sign up for a chocolate-making demo followed by an all-important tasting. Leaving on August 23, 2024, the Bruges and Netherlands long weekend also includes a trip to Rotterdam.
If you’ve got a head for heights, and want the best views of the city, head up the 180m Euromast which is the highest observation platform in Holland.
You’ll be aboard the stylish Celebrity Apex where you can sip artisan cocktails such as Forbidden in the whimsical Eden bar, sit in flower-shaped chairs and try to resist touching pink ostrich feather ‘trees’.
Sound waves Norwegian Cruise Line mini cruise
Forget having to hunt for your tent and the possibility of downpours and mud by going to a music festival at sea. Norwegian Cruise Line hosts some of the best and as they’re held in the Caribbean sunshine is guaranteed.
If you’re an R&B fan and want to do something different next Valentine’s Day Maxwell’s four-day Urban Hang Suite Cruise leaves Miami on February 10, 2024. Grammy-award-winning artist Maxwell will perform two concerts and will be more live music from the likes of Ledisi, Robert Glasper, Sabrina Claudio, and Musiq Soulchild, plus DJs, comedy and parties.
Norwegian Pearl stops at Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island Bahamian playground. Back onboard you don’t need to worry about going thirsty as O’Sheehan’s Irish pub is open 24/7.
Push the boat out Cunard mini cruise
Live a posh Titanic-style lifestyle (minus any icebergs and sinking of course) with Cunard . You can get a taste of the luxe line on a budget with one of the mini cruises from Southampton.
Bag a cabin for less than £300 on a two-night jaunt on the flagship Queen Mary 2 departing on October 20, 2023, and immerse yourself in the retro glamour of afternoon tea served by white-gloved waiters.
There’s a stop in Hamburg , one of Germany’s most multicultural cities, where you can join the local beer culture and sip the city’s own pilsner. Need something stronger? Order lutt um lutt , which is beer fortified with fiery schnapps.

For those not yet ready to enter the world of ocean cruising, mini cruises offer a small foray into cruising with all the epic proportions of traditional cruise facilities, without having to commit to the time or cost. As a result, they typically are between two to six nights' long and offer a more relaxed atmosphere than their longer counterparts; expect the warm welcomes from the cruise lines and sumptuous dining, but bars are often open for longer and there's more of a fun-filled, informal feel.
How long you opt for and which port you travel from affords a range of short-shop destinations in the UK or Europe, whether it be setting sail to Newcastle or further afield to Amsterdam , Ghent and Bilbao . Typical mini cruise packages include accommodation in your choice of cabin, full board arrangements, first-class on-board entertainment and calls at ports, with the same high levels of comfort and high class vessels that are standard to ocean cruising. Think open-air jacuzzis, plenty of deck space, pools, beauty salons and comfortable cabins with private facilities.
The MS Marco Polo and MV Discovery are popular vessels for mini cruises and include the following facilities:
MS Marco Polo
Described as the 'epitome of sea-going elegance', the beautiful 22,000-tonne Marco Polo offers a classic, traditional cruising environment. Priding itself on its warm welcome and sumptuous dining, this child-free ship boasts eight passenger decks which between them ensure ample deck space on which to sunbathe, play deck games, take a promenade or even jog for those who are so inclined. This high-class vessel also has a pool and Pool Bar, desk-top jacuzzis, gym, hair and beauty salon as well as sauna and massage facilities. To wind down after a port of call or a night of dancing till dark, all cabins offer private facilities with bath/shower, TV with satellite and in-house channels, hairdryer and personal safe. View the Marco Polo deck plan
Below are some popular stops for mini cruises around Europe, this is just an idea of where you may stop and what you can do. Please note that itineraries and timings will vary by date and company.
Amsterdam A great potential stop is in Amsterdam, this allows you to experience this fascinating cosmopolitan city before returning back to your cabin. Why not visit Anne Frank’s House or one of the many museums? Explore the 165 canals which surround Amsterdam and stop for a beverage in a traditional coffee house whilst watching the world go by.
Ghent Located between Bruges, Brussels and Antwerp, Ghent is a medieval canal city in the heart of Belgium. Known to be a great stop, Ghent has a wealth of attractions to explore from the Castle of the Counts, St Michael’s Bridge to St Bavos Cathedral. Then after exploring the city you can retire back to the ship to relax.
Bilbao A popular stop is Bilbao is a thriving city located in North Spain. Frequently visited tourist attractions include the Guggenheim Museum, the Dona Casilda Park and Plaza Nueva. If your cruise stops here you can spend the day exploring popular Old Town and then see the contrasting newer architecture like the Guggenheim Museum building.
Edinburgh Perhaps you could explore Edinburgh when your ship docks for the day. Visit Edinburgh Castle in all its glory towering over the city or spend a few hours browsing stores on Princes Street.
Mini cruises are anywhere between 2-6 nights in duration and are more relaxed than traditional cruises. Expect bars to be open later than normal and an informal, fun feel.

Mini Cruises: Your Ultimate Guide to Short Sea Adventures
Posted on Last updated: February 9, 2024
Welcome aboard the ultimate journey into the world of Mini Cruises! These brief yet blissful sea voyages offer a perfect escape into a world of relaxation and discovery.
Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or new to the waves , this comprehensive guide will navigate you through the sparkling waters of mini cruising.
Introduction to Mini Cruises
The allure of mini cruises.
The concept of a mini cruise, a shorter version of the traditional cruise experience, has gained immense popularity in recent years.
These compact sea adventures typically range from a single night to five nights, offering a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and luxury without the commitment of a longer voyage.
Ideal for those with time constraints or budget considerations, mini cruises provide a snapshot of the cruising lifestyle.
Why Choose a Mini Cruise?
Mini cruises serve as an excellent introduction to cruising for newcomers. They offer a taste of life at sea, including gourmet dining, entertainment, and stops at interesting destinations, all within a shorter timeframe.
For the experienced cruiser, they provide a quick getaway or an opportunity to explore new ships and cruise lines without a long-term commitment.
Additionally, mini cruises are often more budget-friendly, making them an attractive option for those who want to enjoy the cruise experience without the larger expense of a longer voyage.
The Growing Popularity
The rise in the popularity of mini cruises can be attributed to various factors. Firstly, the busy nature of modern life means that many people find it difficult to take extended vacations.
Mini cruises fit perfectly into long weekends or short breaks. Secondly, there is a growing trend towards experiential travel – trips where the journey itself is part of the experience, rather than just the destination. Mini cruises excel in this area, offering a variety of onboard experiences.
Finally, the increasing diversity in cruise offerings – from themed cruises to luxury experiences – means there is something for everyone, even in a shorter format.
What to Expect on a Mini Cruise
A mini cruise is like a sampler of what longer cruises offer. Passengers can expect to enjoy a range of amenities such as swimming pools, spas, fitness centers, and various dining options.
Entertainment on board ranges from live shows and music to casinos and themed parties. Accommodations might be more compact compared to longer cruises, but they are no less comfortable or well-appointed.
Each mini cruise itinerary offers something unique, whether it’s a day in a bustling port city, an afternoon on a sun-soaked beach, or an excursion into nature. The destinations are as diverse as the ships themselves, ranging from cozy coastal towns to vibrant cities.
Choosing the Right Mini Cruise
When selecting a mini cruise, consider factors such as the departure port, destinations, onboard amenities, and the overall theme of the cruise. Some cruises focus on relaxation and wellness, while others might be geared towards adventure or cultural exploration.
The choice of cruise line is also crucial. Each line has its unique style and target audience. For instance, some cater to families with children, offering kid-friendly activities and facilities, while others might target adults with a more sophisticated or romantic atmosphere.
Choosing Your Mini Cruise: Key Considerations
Embarking on a mini cruise is an exciting endeavor, but with so many options available, choosing the right one can be daunting.
This section outlines key considerations to help you select the perfect mini cruise that aligns with your preferences and expectations.
Duration: Understanding Mini Cruise Lengths
Mini cruises vary in length, typically ranging from a quick overnight trip to a more leisurely five-night journey. The duration of your cruise will significantly impact your experience.
Shorter cruises are great for a rapid escape, often not stopping at any ports, while longer mini cruises allow for more time to explore and enjoy onboard amenities. When choosing the duration, consider how much time you can comfortably be away and what you hope to achieve on your cruise.
Destinations: Popular Mini Cruise Routes
The destinations visited on a mini cruise are a major draw. These cruises can take you to a variety of places, from bustling cities to serene islands.
Some popular routes include the Mediterranean for its rich culture and beautiful coastlines, the Caribbean for its tropical beaches, or even scenic river cruises in Europe. Consider what type of destination appeals to you – are you looking for cultural experiences, natural beauty, or perhaps a mix of both?
Budgeting: Costs and Value for Money
One of the advantages of mini cruises is their affordability compared to longer voyages. However, costs can vary based on factors like the cruise line, ship, destination, and type of cabin. It’s important to understand what is included in the price of your cruise.
Some cruises are all-inclusive, covering meals, entertainment, and even some shore excursions, while others may charge extra for certain amenities. Setting a budget beforehand and understanding what it covers will help in making an informed decision.
Seasons: Best Times of Year for Mini Cruises
The time of year you choose to cruise can greatly affect your experience. Weather, crowds, and pricing vary significantly across seasons. For instance, cruising in the Caribbean during hurricane season might be cheaper but comes with certain risks.
Similarly, cruising in Europe during the summer offers great weather but can be more crowded and expensive. Consider what balance of weather, price, and crowd level you’re comfortable with when planning your trip.
Choosing the right mini cruise involves considering several key factors, including the length of the trip, destinations, budget, and the time of year.
By carefully weighing these considerations, you can select a mini cruise that not only fits your schedule and budget but also fulfills your travel desires. With the right planning, your mini cruise can offer an unforgettable blend of relaxation, adventure, and exploration.
Types of Mini Cruises
Mini cruises come in various themes and styles, catering to different interests and preferences.
Understanding these types can help you choose a cruise that aligns perfectly with your expectations for a memorable experience. Here we explore some popular types of mini cruises.
Family-Friendly Cruises
For those traveling with children, family-friendly cruises are an excellent choice. These cruises focus on providing activities and entertainment for all ages. Features often include kids’ clubs, family-oriented shows, and activities like mini-golf or water parks .
Dining options cater to younger tastes, and family cabins are designed to accommodate larger groups comfortably. When selecting a family-friendly cruise, look for those that offer a balance of activities for both children and adults.
Romantic Getaways
Mini cruises can also provide the perfect setting for romance. These cruises often feature more intimate ships, elegant dining options, and adult-only areas like spas and quiet pools.
Special activities might include couples massages, romantic dinners under the stars, or dance evenings. When choosing a romantic mini cruise, consider the ambiance of the ship and the privacy of accommodations.
Adventure and Exploration Cruises
For the more adventurous, there are mini cruises focused on exploration and activities. These cruises might offer unique excursions like snorkeling, hiking, or exploring local cultures and wildlife.
The ship itself might have facilities geared towards adventure, such as rock climbing walls or surf simulators. These cruises are ideal for those who want a balance of sea travel with active, exciting experiences at each destination.
Luxury and Relaxation Cruises
Luxury mini cruises are designed for those seeking a more indulgent experience. These cruises emphasize high-end accommodations, gourmet dining, and superior service.
Onboard amenities might include world-class spas, elegant lounges, and sophisticated entertainment. If relaxation and pampering are your priorities, a luxury mini cruise can provide a blissful escape from the everyday.
Themed Mini Cruises
Themed mini cruises cater to specific interests or hobbies, such as culinary cruises, music festivals at sea, or wellness retreats.
These cruises provide opportunities to engage deeply with a particular theme through specialized programs, workshops, performances, and themed activities. They offer a unique way to combine a love for cruising with your personal passions.
Planning Your Mini Cruise: Step by Step
Embarking on a mini cruise is an exciting prospect, but the planning process can sometimes feel overwhelming. This section offers a step-by-step guide to help you navigate through the planning stages, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience.
Selecting a Cruise Line and Ship
The first step in planning your mini cruise is selecting the right cruise line and ship. Each cruise line has its unique style and caters to different demographics.
Some are known for their luxurious amenities, others for family-friendly activities, and some focus on adventure or cultural exploration. Research and compare different cruise lines to see which aligns best with your interests and expectations.
Additionally, the choice of ship is crucial. Larger ships offer a wide range of facilities and entertainment options, while smaller ships might provide a more intimate and personalized experience. Consider the size and amenities of the ship in relation to what you want from your cruise experience.
Booking Your Trip: Tips and Tricks
Once you’ve chosen your cruise line and ship, it’s time to book your trip. Here are some tips to consider:
- Early Booking: Often, booking early can secure you better deals and a wider choice of cabins.
- Last-Minute Deals: Conversely, if you’re flexible, last-minute bookings can sometimes offer significant discounts.
- Cabin Selection: Think about what type of cabin you prefer. While interior cabins are budget-friendly, ocean-view or balcony cabins offer better views.
- Travel Agent vs. Direct Booking: Consider using a travel agent who specializes in cruises. They can offer valuable advice and may have access to exclusive deals. Alternatively, booking directly through the cruise line’s website gives you more control over your choices.
Packing Essentials for a Mini Cruise
Packing for a mini cruise can be simpler than for a longer voyage, but it’s still important to bring the essentials. Key items include:
- Clothing: Pack according to your destinations and planned activities. Include swimwear, formal attire if required, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Travel Documents: Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including passports, visas, and travel insurance.
- Medications and Health Supplies: Don’t forget any prescription medications, as well as a small first aid kit, seasickness remedies, and any personal health items.
- Day Bags: For shore excursions, a day bag for carrying essentials like sunscreen, water, and a camera is useful.
- Electronics: Remember chargers for your devices, and consider a portable power bank.
- Miscellaneous: Consider items like books, a travel journal, or any specific gear for planned activities.
Understanding Cruise Itineraries
Familiarize yourself with the cruise itinerary. This includes not just the destinations, but also the schedule of onboard activities and entertainment. Knowing the itinerary helps you plan your time effectively, both on the ship and at port stops.
- Port Stops: Research the ports you’ll be visiting. Look into local attractions, dining options, and any cultural norms or language barriers.
- Onboard Activities: Review the ship’s schedule for shows, events, and activities so you can plan your onboard experience.
Planning a mini cruise involves careful consideration of several key factors: selecting the right cruise line and ship, booking your trip, packing appropriately, and understanding the itinerary. By following these steps, you can ensure a well-prepared and stress-free cruise experience.
Onboard Experience
A significant part of the allure of mini cruises is the onboard experience. Even on shorter voyages, cruise ships offer a plethora of activities, dining options, and entertainment. This section will guide you through what to expect and how to make the most of your time onboard.
Accommodation Options
Your choice of accommodation can greatly impact your cruise experience. Cruise ships typically offer a range of cabin types:
- Interior Cabins: These are the most budget-friendly, but they don’t have windows.
- Oceanview Cabins: These feature a window or porthole with a view of the sea.
- Balcony Cabins: Offering private balconies, these cabins provide a personal space to enjoy the sea breeze and views.
- Suites: The most luxurious option, suites offer more space and often come with extra amenities and services.
Consider your preferences and budget when choosing your cabin. If you plan to spend most of your time exploring the ship and ports, an interior cabin might suffice. If you prefer more space and views, a balcony cabin or suite might be worth the splurge.
Dining and Culinary Highlights
Dining is a highlight of any cruise, and mini cruises are no exception. Options range from casual buffets to formal dining rooms and specialty restaurants.
- Main Dining Room: Offers a variety of dishes with changing menus, often reflecting the regions visited.
- Buffets: Great for a casual meal, offering a wide selection of foods.
- Specialty Restaurants: These often require reservations and an additional fee, offering specialized cuisines like Italian, Japanese, or steakhouse fare.
- Room Service: Most ships offer room service, allowing you to enjoy meals in your cabin.
Remember to check if your cruise has any dress codes for dining areas, especially for evening meals.

Relaxation and Spa Facilities
For those looking to relax, most ships offer spa and wellness facilities:
- Spas: Offering treatments like massages, facials, and body wraps.

Socializing and Meeting New People
Mini cruises are a great opportunity to meet new people. There are often social events, group activities, and communal dining options designed to encourage mingling.
The onboard experience of a mini cruise offers something for everyone, from luxurious relaxation to high-energy entertainment and activities. By understanding the options available, you can tailor your cruise experience to your personal preferences, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable journey.
Exploring Destinations
One of the highlights of any mini cruise is the opportunity to explore diverse destinations. Even with limited time at each stop, you can still experience the essence of each location. This section covers how to make the most of your time ashore and enjoy the unique experiences each port offers.
Shore Excursions: What to Expect
Shore excursions are organized tours that you can book through your cruise line. They offer a convenient way to explore key attractions without having to worry about logistics.
- Types of Excursions: These range from sightseeing tours and cultural experiences to adventure activities like snorkeling or hiking.
- Booking Excursions: You can book these either in advance or on the ship, but keep in mind that popular tours can fill up quickly.
- Customized Experiences: Some cruises offer bespoke excursions for those seeking a more personalized experience.
Making the Most of Limited Time Ashore
With only a few hours in each port, it’s important to plan wisely:
- Research in Advance: Before your cruise, research each destination to identify must-see attractions or experiences.
- Prioritize Activities: Decide what’s most important to you – whether it’s a cultural experience, shopping, dining, or simply exploring.
- Consider Independent Exploration: If organized tours don’t appeal to you, consider exploring on your own. Just be mindful of the ship’s departure time.
Cultural Etiquette and Tips
When visiting different destinations, it’s important to be respectful of local customs and traditions:
- Research Local Customs: Understanding local etiquette, dress codes, and basic phrases in the local language can enhance your experience and show respect for the culture.
- Sustainable Tourism: Be mindful of your environmental and social impact. Support local businesses and respect natural and historical sites.
Safety and Navigation in Port Cities
Safety should always be a priority when exploring new places:
- Stay Informed: Be aware of any travel advisories for the destinations you’re visiting.
- Plan Your Route: If exploring independently, plan your route and keep a map or GPS device handy.
- Keep Important Information: Carry the contact information of the ship and a copy of your ID.
Exploring destinations is a key part of the mini cruise experience. Whether through organized shore excursions or independent exploration, each port offers a chance to immerse yourself in new cultures, sights, and experiences.
By planning ahead and being mindful of local customs and safety, you can make the most of your time ashore and create lasting memories.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Cruising
As the cruise industry continues to grow, the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly practices becomes increasingly crucial.
This section discusses how you can make environmentally conscious choices while enjoying your mini cruise, and what cruise lines are doing to reduce their environmental footprint.
Environmental Impact of Mini Cruises
Cruises, like any form of travel, have an environmental impact. This includes fuel consumption, waste production, and effects on marine life and local ecosystems. Understanding these impacts can help you make more informed choices.
Choosing Eco-Friendly Cruise Options
Many cruise lines are taking steps to become more eco-friendly. When selecting your cruise, consider the following:
- Fuel Efficiency and Emissions: Look for cruise lines that use cleaner fuels and advanced technology to reduce emissions.
- Waste Management: Choose companies with strong waste reduction and recycling policies.
- Sustainable Excursions: Opt for shore excursions that emphasize sustainability and support local communities.
Contributing to Sustainable Tourism
As a traveler, you can contribute to sustainable practices in several ways:
- Minimize Waste: Be mindful of your waste on board and use recycling facilities. Reduce single-use plastics by bringing reusable items like water bottles and bags.
- Respect Marine Life: When participating in water activities, follow guidelines to avoid disturbing marine ecosystems.
- Support Local Economies: When on shore excursions, support local businesses and artisans.
Cruise Lines’ Efforts in Sustainability
Many cruise lines are actively working to improve their sustainability, with initiatives like:
- Investing in Cleaner Technology: Such as scrubbers to reduce sulfur emissions and LNG-powered ships.
- Reducing Single-Use Plastics: Many lines are eliminating or significantly reducing the use of single-use plastics on board.
- Energy Efficiency: Implementing energy-saving technologies and practices on ships.
Sustainability in cruising is a growing focus, and by choosing eco-friendly options and being mindful of your environmental impact, you can contribute to more responsible tourism.
Cruise lines are continuously evolving their practices to become more sustainable, reflecting a commitment to preserving the oceans and destinations they visit.
Navigating Challenges and Ensuring Safety
Safety is a top priority on any cruise, and addressing challenges that may arise is essential for a smooth and enjoyable journey. In this section, we’ll cover common challenges and safety considerations on mini cruises.
Dealing with Seasickness
Seasickness can affect passengers, especially during rough seas. Here are some tips for managing seasickness:
- Choose the Right Cabin: Opt for a cabin in the middle of the ship, where you’ll feel less movement.
- Medications: Over-the-counter or prescription medications can help alleviate seasickness. Consult your doctor before the trip.
- Natural Remedies: Some passengers find relief through natural remedies like ginger or acupressure bands.
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can worsen seasickness, so drink plenty of water.
Safety Protocols and Emergency Drills
Cruise ships have strict safety protocols and conduct mandatory emergency drills:
- Attend Drills: Attend the safety drill at the beginning of the cruise. It provides important information about emergency procedures.
- Life Jackets: Familiarize yourself with the location of life jackets in your cabin and public areas.
- Emergency Exits: Be aware of the nearest emergency exits on the ship.
- Follow Crew Instructions: In the event of an emergency, follow the instructions of the ship’s crew.
Health Concerns and Medical Facilities
Cruise ships have medical facilities and trained medical staff on board:
- Travel Insurance: Ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.
- Medications: Bring any necessary medications and prescriptions with you.
- Medical Services: Familiarize yourself with the ship’s medical facilities and services.
Security and Personal Belongings
While cruise ships are generally safe, it’s essential to take precautions:
- Use Safes: Most cabins have safes where you can store valuable items.
- Lock Your Cabin: Always lock your cabin when you’re not inside.
- Be Cautious in Ports: Exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings when exploring ports of call.
Safety and addressing challenges are fundamental to a successful mini cruise experience. By being prepared and following safety protocols, you can enjoy a worry-free journey and have the confidence to deal with any unexpected situations that may arise.

European Cruise Departure Ports
- London (Southampton)
Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.
Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.
Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.
From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.
Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.
Why Cruise in Europe

Independent land travel through Europe adds up fast — between accommodations, restaurants, train travel, taxis and more. But with Princess, you can spend more time exploring Europe and less time checking into your next hotel.
Experience Different Seasons of Europe
Sail into the season
See the many faces of the world with seasonal European cruise sailings from Princess. In the spring, shop France’s colorful outdoor markets for hand-crafted souvenirs. Frolic through Norway’s landscapes when they fully bloom in summer. Or visit Italy in the fall to taste the first wines of the season.
Sail Aboard Our Newest Ships
Your best-in-class travel companion
Built in Italy, our newest ships first set sail in international waters for their inaugural season. On a European cruise, you can be one of the first to travel aboard these vessels, adding a whole new level of excitement and opportunity to your trip. Plus these are the first ships designed with Princess® MedallionClass®, making them the best European cruises at sea.
See Famous Landmarks
Where history books come alive
Between the castles, towers and ruins, Europe is teeming with ancient architecture. On a European cruise, sail into Le Havre and choose to visit the beaches of Normandy or ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Walk through the Colosseum in Rome, and stop by Livorno to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or explore hidden gems — like Belfast’s Giant’s Causeway.
A Vacation for Every Generation
Adventures for all
In Europe, there are activities for all. With exciting tours through age-old cities, kids can see textbooks come to life and return with their own stories to tell. Parents can relish in romance and relaxation amidst fairytale landscapes, and grandparents can relive stories of memories past with their loved ones. Whether on board or ashore, find activities created with every type of guest in mind on a cruise to Europe.

On board your European cruise, enjoy English favorites — like bangers and mash or shepherd’s pie — during a British-style pub lunch. Then head ashore to savor fresh ingredients and iconic dishes, including fresh Greek salads and Italian gelato. From ship to shore, taste the best of abroad with Princess.
Sip and savor
Home to some of the best vineyards in the world, Europe knows a thing or two about wine — and so does Princess. Visit Vines wine bar, one of the best-stocked cellars at sea, and sample an assortment of reds and whites. Unwind with a drink in hand at Crooners, a vintage Sinatra-era cocktail lounge. Or enjoy a glass from the comfort of your stateroom balcony while taking in views of Europe’s most inspiring shorelines.
Cultural Immersion
Dive even deeper
On a European cruise, explore destinations even at sea. Learn from local experts — like musicians, dancers, athletes and chefs — who come on board to show you the unique personality of each region. Or listen to stories from international crew members, many of whom call these lands home. Even kids can awaken their sense of wonder with our Youth and Teen Centers, created in partnership with Discovery™ and Animal Planet™.
Entertainment
Find your joy
Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.
Celebrations & Romance
Love blooms on The Love Boat
It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe.
