Montego Bay (Jamaica) Cruise Port Guide and Review (2023)

Basic guide to Montego Bay cruise port terminal: where ships dock, how to get around (shuttle bus and taxis), what to do, shore excursions, and must-know.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

In the last weeks of 2017 and early 2018, there were reports about a surge in violent crime in the area of Montego Bay. The Jamaican Government has ordered military surveillance of the city and advised visitors to only use authorized tourist services.

IQCruising strongly advises cruise passengers to be cautious . But also to not panic. Sheer sensationalism may be twisting news. Until further updated reports, exploring Montego Bay on your own may not be the best option. Cruise passengers should check for safety updates with the U.S. Department of State and the Tourist Office in the Port Terminal.

Where cruise ships dock in Montego Bay

Montego Bay is a popular port of call for cruise lines like Carnival, MSC, and NCL but also Viking or Cunard. Cruise ships dock in what is known as Montego Bay Freeport which is around 3 miles (5 km) to the west of the second largest city in Jamaica. With 6 berths, the Port receives as many as 4 cruise ships per day - although this rare.

There is only one large Terminal building (a bit run down) that doesn't compare in modernity and amenities to the recently redeveloped port of Falmouth but that has all basic services.

Besides a number of typical duty-free and souvenir shops, restrooms, and beverage stand, there is also a Tourist Office booth at the terminal that can be of help to guide the cruise traveler wishing to explore Montego Bay on your own - also the right place to ask about what are official taxi fares.

Because the Cruise Port is not close to Montego Bay's attractions or any of the island's highlights, a 3-mile walk is not really an option - no shade, very hot and humid.

The way to town is along a busy road - the main exit to the south of Jamaica - and, unless the weather is cool and you have been in Mo'Bay before, the walk is not advisable even if you are planning to just go Downtown (the closest attraction to the Port) or a bit farther to the Doctor's Cave Beach.

Licensed taxis at the terminal

The good news is that right outside the Terminal the cruise traveler will find licensed taxi drivers with 'official' rates to all major attractions - a ride to Montego Bay shouldn't cost more than $5.00 and a taxi ride to Negril - 1 Hour and 15 Minutes - costs around $24.00 per person.

The days when haggling was mandatory to avoid a serious rip-off are long gone. Almost all destinations have standard fares and these only depend on how many passengers will be in the cab - check caribya.com or juta.com for Taxi Fares. However, be aware that to return to the ship, taxi drivers in town (or wherever you heading) may try to increase the return fare.

Cruise travelers planning to visit exclusively the historical center of Montego Bay will be better off by getting on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus aka Hot Spot Shuttle - $15.00 per person. Some cruise lines (Carnival) sell the Hot Spot Shuttle onboard for a couple of dollars more than the regular rate. The shuttle has stops close to all main attractions in Mo'Bay - Hip-Strip, Margaritaville, Doctors Cave and Downtown.

Things to do on a cruise to Monetgo Bay

There are a few interesting attractions in Mo'Bay or relatively close by. In the heart of the city, on Sam Sharpe Square , you will find the Cage (a monument evoking the days of slavery) and the Montego Bay Cultural Centre - an extension of the National Gallery of Jamaica.

On a more active note, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is, together with Doctor's Cave Beach, one of the main attractions in town. For all other top attractions near by you should either book a tour onboard your cruise ship, with independent tour operators online or a licensed taxi driver.

Just a few miles away, there are plantation houses that are a delight to visit for those interested in the rich history of Jamaica such as Bellefield Great House with its tropical gardens, views, and antique furnishings; the immaculately preserved Greenwood Great House that once belonged to the family of Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, the famous English poet

The Rose Hall Great House is another must see, where besides eerie stories of ghosts and witches, there are two championship golf courses - Cinnamon Hill and White Witch .

If your cruise calls at Montego Bay on a Tuesday or a Friday, you should consider an unusual tour to a working plantation - coffee and pineapples - in Croydon by the Catadupa Mountain.

If Golf is your thing, the Tryall Club is a famous luxury must in Jamaica, whilst at the more affordable Half Moon Golf Club there are also other activities on the property such as the Equestrian Centre and an area with duty-free shopping.

Further along the north coast, Braco Stables offer a unique Ride n' Swim experience; the Hampden Estate offers a journey into the heart of a working rum distillery established in 1750. At the Rasta Village , visitors can learn about the ways of Rastafari, participate in organic farming and learn to make traditional crafts.

Around twenty miles from Montego Bay, rafting on a 30 ft bamboo raft in Martha Brae is one of the top highlights of Jamaica and an opportunity for the cruise traveler to experience a truly unique tour. Rafting is also possible in the Mountain Valley.

Cruise and shore excursions

All cruise lines offer excellent shore excursions (aka Shorex) and tours of Montego Bay. Besides the sightseeing options mentioned above, the cruise traveler should consider independent tour operators such as Jamaica Tour | Viator | Tours by Locals | Shore Trips | Shore Excursions .

Montego Bay has excellent information provided by official websites that can be very helpful for the cruise traveler to explore and discover major attractions, restaurants, shopping, activities and tours. Montego Bay Cruise Port | 10 Best Things To Do In Montego Bay

Montego Bay

Welcome to Montego Bay cruise port!

Nestled on the northwest coast of the island, Montego Bay (aka Mo’Bay) is Jamaica’s second-largest port and one of its most popular tourist destinations. Known for its bustling Hip Strip, golf courses and historic estates, Montego Bay is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Caribbean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Montego Bay cruise port (Montego Bay cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)

Montego Bay Cruise Port

Montego Bay cruise terminal, known as Montego Bay Freeport , is a duty-free area located 4.5 km/2.8 miles (a 10-minute drive) southwest of Montego Bay city center and the tourist Hip Strip area. Three cruise ship berths can accommodate up to 4 cruise liners at a time.

Montego Bay cruise ship terminal consists of one terminal building where you can find basic facilities including a tourist information desk, a refreshments stand, duty-free shops and souvenir stores. Outside the terminal, you’ll find a taxi rank with official taxi rates, shuttle buses and tour buses for those of you joining the shore excursions.

The port area is flat and wheelchair accessible. The Hip-Strip area is also flat and easy to navigate, however, the city is partially hilly.

Major cruise lines sailing to Montego Bay include Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Holland America Line.

Getting Around Montego Bay Jamaica

  • There are a few ways to get to Montego Bay downtown. Taxis have official rates that you can check at the tourist information office. There are regular-sized and minivan-style taxis. They normally wait until the vehicle is full because many people go in the same direction. However, when returning to the port, arrange the price with the taxi driver in advance to avoid being overcharged.
  • Alternatively, you can take the Hot Spot Shuttle bus , which has a similar concept to Hop on Hop off buses and stops at several different locations in Montego Bay including Hip Strip, Margaritaville, Doctor’s Cave Beach and the downtown area. The pass is valid for a day and you can hop on/off as many times as you wish.
  • Walking to the town is not recommended as it’s shadeless and takes at least 1 hour.
  • Gloucester Avenue, more popularly known as “ Hip Strip ” is the heart of tourist activities where you can find shops, parks, public beaches, restaurants and bars, as well as a few city attractions and historic landmarks. The street runs parallel to the coast and lines Montego Bay’s most popular beaches including Doctor’s Cave Beach, One Man Beach/Old Hospital Park Beach, Harmony Beach Park and the seaside Aqua Sol Theme Park. Hip-Strip is a lively crowded area and the street is normally congested, so keep this in mind when returning to the port.
  • Shopping in Montego Bay is centered around Hip Strip and the downtown area (Sam Sharpe Square, St James Street). You’ll find many shopping malls such as Baywest Shopping Center, Centrepoint Plaza, Union Square Plaza, and St James Place Shopping Plaza. There are also a few Craft markets, and the largest one is the Craft Market on Harbour Street. For those of you who prefer to stay around the port, Montego Freeport Shopping Center is the perfect choice because it’s located within the cruise terminal complex.
  • Montego Bay is not the safest place in the world, so it’s not recommended to explore on your own the non-touristy areas.
  • Do not be surprised if locals offer you marijuana at the beach, or in a shop. I’ve experienced it in Montego Bay several times in one day, so be mindful of that.
  • The currency in Jamaica is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD). 1 USD equals approximately 150 JMD. US dollars and credit cards are accepted, however, I suggest you use cash due to safety reasons.
  • Sangster International Airport is located 7 km/4.5 miles (a 15-minute drive) northeast of Montego Bay port.

6. Sam Sharpe Square

Sam Sharpe Square lies in the heart of downtown around 500 m from Harmony Beach Park, which is located at the entrance of Hip Strip. It is a cobblestone square named after national hero Samuel Sharpe, an enslaved Jamaican who was the leader of the Baptist War slave rebellion (aka “Christmas Rebellion”) in 1831.

The square features the Cage , which used to be a jail for runaway slaves, and Montego Bay Cultural Centre housing the National Museum West and National Gallery West.

Around the square and on St James St you’ll find numerous shops, shopping malls, restaurants and bars. Craft Market , located a stone’s throw from Sam Sharpe Square on Harbour Street, features dozens of stalls where you can find authentic handicrafts, local art and souvenirs.

7. Rose Hall Great House

Built on the 650-acre Rose Hall Plantation, the 18th-century Rose Hall Great House preserves the memory of White Witch Annie Palmer who, according to the legend, tortured countless slaves and murdered her three husbands on the property.

The Georgian mansion was renovated and transformed into a history museum where you can learn about Jamaican history and hear the haunted stories of the White Witch of Rose Hall. Rose Hall Great House is located around 20 km/12.5 miles (a 25-minute drive) northeast of Montego Bay cruise port.

Alternatively, you can visit a few other 18th-century plantation houses such as Bellefield Great House (a 15-minute drive from the port) and Greenwood Great House (a 40-minute drive). The plantation houses and estates will provide you with an insight into Jamaica’s rich historic and cultural heritage.

Finally, if you want to learn about rum production and taste the country’s premium rum, head to Appleton Estate rum distillery located about 60 km/37 miles (a 2-hour drive) southeast of Montego Bay Port.

If you are into golf, Montego Bay boasts four championship courses rated among the best ones in the world. The iconic Rose Hall Estate features two golf courses – Cinnamon Hill Golf Course with 18 holes and amazing views of the Caribbean Sea, and White Witch Golf Course with 16 holes set in the rolling hills of Jamaica’s countryside. Both courses are located a 30-minute drive from Montego Bay cruise terminal.

Half Moon Golf Club is located a 25-minute drive from the port, next to the Half Moon Shopping Village, while Tryall Golf Club (a 30-minute drive from the port) features a resort-style course with magnificent ocean views.

9. Dunn’s River Falls

Jamaica’s legendary waterfalls are located about 100 km/62 miles or a 1 h 50-minute drive east of Montego Bay cruise port. Nestled in the middle of the jungle, right by the ocean, Dunn’s River Falls ranks among the most visited attractions on the island. The terraced waterfall is popular for climbing and it takes around 45 minutes to climb from its bottom to the top.

Dunns River Falls, Jamaica

The climb is strenuous, however, if you don’t wish to do it, you can spend your day within the complex where you can walk, shop at souvenir shops, have a drink, or grab a bite at one of the eateries. There is a staircase parallel to the waterfall so you can walk alongside and take beautiful pictures of the falls.

Bring water shoes and a swimsuit if you want to climb the falls. I also suggest you get a waterfront phone case so you can bring your phone with you (as there is no professional photographer taking pictures of you). Changing rooms and restrooms are available within the complex.

10. Martha Brae Bamboo Rafting

Martha Brae Rafting Village is a starting point for a peaceful 3-mile journey down the river set in unspoiled nature and lush vegetation. For an ultimate relaxing day in nature, embark on a tranquil bamboo raft ride and enjoy the untouched beauty of the Jamaican countryside.

Wrapping Up

If you are planning a cruise to Montego Bay, make sure you plan your day according to the ship’s schedule to maximize your stay in port. If you are a first-timer, I suggest you explore the Hip Strip, the downtown area and Montego Bay’s beaches rather than Dunn’s River Falls as they are too far and you will waste a lot of time in traffic.

So get ready to explore this exciting port town and make the most of your cruise day in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Where Is the Port of Montego Bay

Located on the northern coast of Jamaica, Montego Bay is a prominent cruise port in the Western Caribbean, renowned for its vibrant culture and scenic beauty. With approximately 110,000 inhabitants, it stands as a bustling hub of activity. The large cruise terminal in Montego bay can accommodate up to four cruise ships simultaneously, ranking it the third busiest cruise port in Jamaica .

Often referred to as the ‘Second City’ or ‘Mo’Bay,’ Montego Bay is dubbed the ‘Second City’ due to its status as the second-largest city in Jamaica, both in population and economic significance, following the capital, Kingston. The nickname ‘Mo’Bay’ is a shortened, informal version of its name, affectionately used by locals and visitors.

Arriving at Montego Bay Cruise Port

Montego Bay Cruise Port

Cruise ships in Montego Bay dock at the town’s Freeport zone, a designated area within the main section of the harbor specifically designed for international trade and tourism. This Freeport zone is where passengers disembark from their cruise ship and are welcomed by a large terminal building. Within this terminal, visitors will find a tourist office booth, duty-free shops, and souvenir stalls, all aimed at enhancing the experience of cruise passengers and visitors to Montego Bay.

The main attractions and Montego Bay’s downtown area are located 3 miles (4.8 km) from the terminal. So, it’s best to take a licensed taxi or Hot Spot Shuttle to explore the town’s attractions. However, if you’ve already booked a cruise ship excursion, your bus will be waiting outside the terminal building.

Many of the major cruise lines that dock in Montego Bay—Carnival Cruise Lines, MSC Cruises, and Princess Cruises—sell Hot Spot Shuttle tickets onboard.

Discovering Montego Bay

Montego Bay is steeped in rich history and has a distinctive Jamaican feel when you get downtown. And there is plenty to do in the town without taking a cruise ship excursion to other parts of the island. Popular tourist spots in the downtown area include Gloucester Avenue with Margaritaville, the Hip Strip, Harmony Beach Park, and the Aqua Sol Theme Park.

Exploring Montego Bay on Cruise Day — An Overview

How can you make the most of your cruise day in Montego Bay?

Many cruise passengers enjoy visiting the historical sites and 18th-century plantation houses around the area. However, if you’re more of an adventure seeker, the Green Grotto Caves, swimming in the tranquil rivers, snorkeling, or an ATV adventure excursion may be your thing.

Of course, no Caribbean cruise would be complete without a relaxing day at the beach. And Montago Bay has plenty of beautiful beaches. The most popular nearby beaches are Harmony Beach, Doctor’s Cave Beach, and Dead End Beach.

How to Get Around Montego Bay

Downtown Montego Bay is 3 miles from the cruise ship terminal. The road is busy and unshaded, and the 30 or 40-minute walk isn’t worth it, especially if you are only spending a day in port. The best transport options are a taxi or shuttle bus.

Upon leaving the terminal building, you’ll see many licensed taxi drivers. They have standard fares for getting to the Montego Bay town center and the most popular locations. So, it’s usually useless haggling to avoid getting ripped off. However, getting back to the cruise ship or flagging a taxi in the town center is different.

The typical taxi fare from Montego Bay Cruise Port to the center is around $5.

Many cruise ship passengers say that some taxi drivers try to take advantage of tourists and charge more for the return fare. So, agreeing on the fare before taking a taxi from the town center is always a good idea. In these cases, polite haggling can help you get the best fare.

Shuttle bus

One of the best ways to get to downtown Montego Bay is the “hop-on hop-off” bus called the Hot Spot Shuttle. It stops at the most popular attractions in Montego Bay—Margaritaville, Doctors Cave, Hip Strip, and the Aqua Sol seaside amusement park. For less than $20, you have a day pass for the bus and can get on and off as many times as you like.

You should purchase the shuttle bus pass on the cruise ship. Although buying the pass on the boat is a few dollars more expensive, you avoid standing in a long line when you disembark.

Walking from Montego Bay Freeport to downtown takes at least 30 minutes and isn’t recommended. However, walking around tourist areas is safe and allows you to explore local craft stalls, cafes, restaurants, and bars. It’s just over a mile from downtown Montego Bay to the Hip Strip, so it’s ideal for strolling through the Caribbean port town.

Fun Things to Do in Montego Bay on a Cruise Day in Port

How can you make the most of your day in Montego Bay on a Caribbean cruise? Here are some of the most popular shore excursions for swimming, horseback riding, snorkeling, ATV adventures, and zip lining.

Visit Montego Bay Marine Park for unforgettable diving or snorkeling experiences

diving in Montego Bay

The Marine Park at Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a great place to arrange sea excursions. Located in the center of the harbor area, the park occupies 15 acres of crystal clear waters, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and tropical coral reefs. It’s the perfect destination for diving, snorkeling, bird watching, catamaran cruises, and glass-bottomed boat excursions.

Some tour operators also include lunch and a 45-minute boat trip along Jamaica’s coastline. You may even find one with parasailing add-ons.

A snorkeling or diving excursion at Montego Bay’s Marine Parks is an unforgettable experience. The clear turquoise waters allow you to observe a variety of marine life—turtles, tropical fish, and colorful coral reefs. If you are a certified scuba diver, you can arrange a deep dive 100 feet (30 m) down to the “Airport Wall” with visibility up to 50 feet.

There is enough to do to spend the entire day at Marine Park. Several cafes are nearby, and Harmony Beach Park and the start of the Hip Strip are a short walk away.

Experience the wonder of Green Grotto Caves

green grotto caves Jamaica

Green Grotto Caves are located on Jamaica’s northern shore, about 40 miles (64 km) from Montego Bay. A shore excursion to the caves allows you to explore stunning limestone features such as stalagmites, stalactites, and dripstone formations. The caves are a maze of interconnected underground chambers and translucent pools.

The passageways and chambers go 120 feet (37 m) deep. So, it is easy to see why they were popular with ancient Arawak Indians (Tainos), who used them for shelter and worship. During British rule, the caves were used as a Spanish hideout.

The entire excursion takes five hours and includes shopping. At the caves, an experienced guide explains the different features of the underground caverns. Then, on the way back, you stop off at Whitter Village—a large shopping mall selling gifts, souvenirs, traditional Jamaican rum, and coffee.

Enjoy a horseback ride, swim, and beach experience

Horseback Ride on Beach Shore

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Montego Bay, Jamaica, is by taking a horseback ride along its picturesque beaches. Several tour operators offer guided horseback rides for cruise visitors looking to explore the area on horseback. Riding your horse in the warm Caribbean waters can be an unforgettable experience.

You will also be amazed that the horses love to dip in the sea.

However, you can arrange excursions through mountain trails if you prefer a more traditional horseback adventure. The forest horseback adventures include breathtaking panoramic ocean vistas of Montego Bay and the Caribbean as well as a trip to an 18th-century sugar plantation.

Experience the thrill of an ATV or quad bike excursion

ATV riding Montego Bay

If you’re an adventure seeker, a quad bike (ATV or UTV) excursion is the perfect way to spend a cruise day in Montego Bay. Safari and forest excursions can include traveling dirt trails through historic estates, traversing river beds, and visiting beautiful villages. And you can pick fresh fruit in season along the way.

Many ATV adventure excursions include swimming in crystal-clear spring waters, swimming pools with swim-up bars, and traditional Jamaican cuisine.

Check out the various ATV shore excursions with your cruise line. Many operators pick up passengers directly from the cruise terminal for a four or five-hour fun-filled adventure excursion.

Go zip lining and tubing at Montpelier

ziplining at Montpelier

You can mix adventure with history by booking a shore excursion to the village of Montpelier. Located a 30-minute drive inland, the village is a haven for adventure lovers. You can book an adrenaline-pumping zipline through the jungle treetops or go tubing or kayaking down the Great River.

The exciting eco-adventure park “Jungle Outpost” also offers hiking through lush tropical jungles, stunning waterfalls, freshwater streams, and pools for swimming in one of Jamaica’s biggest rivers. The soothing sounds of flowing rivers and the natural scents of the jungle flora and fauna are a relaxing experience.

Shore excursions to Montpelier last between four and eight hours, depending on the length of your time in port. Transportation to and from the cruise terminal is included. Montpelier has superb inland water and is the go-to destination for water sports and activities on rivers.

All-inclusive catamaran sail and snorkel excursion

catamaran excursion Montego Bay

The clear blue waters of the Caribbean make the cruise port of Montego Bay the perfect location for an all-inclusive catamaran sail and snorkel adventure. Catamarans are the ideal type of boat for snorkeling and diving excursions. Hiring a private catamaran gives you the freedom to explore the Caribbean waters and coral reefs at your leisure.

Catamaran excursions from Montego Bay are complete with a BBQ, an assortment of drinks, snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and tasty snacks.

Depending on your love of the sea, other types of water sports available at Montego Bay include the following:

  • Deep-sea fishing
  • Scuba diving
  • Diving lessons
  • Waterskiing
  • Parasailing
  • Kiteboarding

There are plenty of watersport centers around the harbor and beach areas of Montego Bay to choose from.

Lazy tubing or kayaking on the Great River

The Great River, a 20-minute drive from the Montego Bay cruise port, is popular for tubing or kayaking. This picturesque river flows through the lush Jamaican countryside. While meandering down the river, you will experience gentle rapids and lagoons. Listen for birds singing, stop off to swim in crystal-clear pools, or use Tarzan swings to jump into the river.

Enjoy the ultimate rafting experience on the Martha Brae River

The Tryall Club Golf Course is a renowned world-class golf course 20 miles (32 km) west of Montego Bay. The championship course offers undulating terrain, rolling fairways, and strategically placed bunkers. Located on the Jamaican coast, the course offers links-style golf thanks to the cool trade winds and breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea.

Renowned course architect Ralph Plummer designed the golf course. It features 18 challenging holes—some at sea level and some 180 feet (55 m) above sea level. It’s regarded as the finest golf course in the Caribbean.

Half Moon Golf Club

Half Moon Golf Club

Located a 20-minute drive from Montego Bay, the Half Moon Golf Club is a highly rated, popular golf destination in Jamaica. This world-class 18-hole championship course is in a former sugarcane plantation. It features 26 shallow-faced bunkers, challenging trade winds, and beautiful tree-lined fairways. Like the other course, the Half Moon course offers stunning ocean views and lush tropical surroundings.

Renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr designed the Half Moon Golf Club. Although the 72-par course features challenging fairways and greens, it’s suitable for golfers of all levels.

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

Eupetomena macroura swallow-tail hummingbird

The Rocklands Bird Sanctuary is a short 22-minute drive from Montego Bay. It’s an ideal tranquil place to escape the hustle and bustle, allowing you to get up close with Jamaica’s vibrant bird life, including the island’s national bird, the doctor bird. This peaceful oasis is home to many species of birds only seen on the island.

A highlight of the sanctuary is the feeding sessions, where you can hand-feed the doctor bird, also known as the swallow-tailed hummingbird. This bird is unique to Jamaica and is noted for its magnificent plumage and impressive tail feathers. You can book an all-inclusive shore excursion that includes rafting and a traditional Jamaican lunch, or take a taxi to the sanctuary and pay the entrance fee.

Shore Excursion to Negril

Negril beach

If you want to experience authentic Jamaican culture, a shore excursion to Negril is the perfect way to spend your day. Day tours to Negril include transportation and a scenic 1:30-hour ride along the Jamaican coastline. You get to stop off at the centuries-old Tryall Water Wheel, the historic town of Lucea, and end at the stunning Negril beach.

You then get to experience Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, located on the seven-mile beach at Negril. You have opportunities to enjoy a wide array of water sports activities or just relax on the beach. The highlight of the shore excursion is a visit to the famous Rick’s CafĂ©, where you can enjoy a party atmosphere and Reggae music.

Seven Mile Beach at Negril

seven-mile beach at Negril

Seven Mile Beach in Negril is a stunning stretch of golden sands located on the western coast of Jamaica. The white sand beach is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, authentic Jamaican cafes and bars, and vibrant culture. A range of water activities like swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and jet skiing are available.

Spending time at the beach and nearby Rick’s CafĂ© is popular with tourists who want to escape the cruise crowds and relax in a peaceful atmosphere.

Rick's Cafe Negrill

The Best Beaches in Montego Bay

Montego Bay is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Northwestern Jamaica. Several pristine beaches in the vicinity have all-inclusive resorts, cafes, and various sports activities. There are around 12 beaches close to Montego Bay, and I’ve reviewed the top five.

Doctor’s Cave Beach

Doctor's Cave Beach Club Montego Bay

Doctor’s Cave Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Montego Bay. Located a short distance from the cruise port, this stunning beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and pristine white sands. Facilities at the beach include beach chairs, changing rooms, freshwater showers, restaurants, cafes, and Starbucks.

The beach is part of the Montego Bay Marine Park. You must pay a small admission fee to access the beach. However, this means the beach is uncrowded, peaceful, and ideal for spending your cruise day in Montego Bay.

Walter Fletcher Beach

Walter Fletcher Beach is one of the most popular beaches for cruise ship passengers visiting Montego Bay. The beach is also home to the Aqua Sol Theme Park. This pristine beach offers various water activities. Facilities at the beach include pedal boats, glass-bottomed boats, snorkeling, banana boat rides, jet skis, and water trampolines.

If you prefer to stay out of the water, then there are go-karts, tennis courts, beach volleyball, and sun loungers with umbrellas. The beach is located at the far end of the Hip Strip, so it’s a relaxing end to a walking tour of Montego Bay downtown.

You can also visit some historical remains near the beach. After all, this location was Fort Montego, where the British troops protected the island from sea invasions. You can find old cannons and stroll through the Old Fort crafts market.

Sunset Beach Park

Sunset Beach Montego Bay

Sunset Beach Park is an all-inclusive beach resort, perfect for relaxing on your day in port. This beautiful beach offers cruise passengers a relaxing and fun-filled day in the sun. Activities include a buffet lunch, free drinks, a freshwater swimming pool, a swim-up bar, and motorized beach activities.

The park boasts pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging on the brilliant white sands. It’s good to note that all-inclusive day-pass availability is limited for cruise passengers.

Dead End Beach

Dead End Beach Montego Bay

Dead End Beach is a hidden gem offering a peaceful and relaxing escape for cruise visitors to unwind in the sun and sand. The free beach in Montego Bay offers calm blue waters, soft white sand, and plenty of swimming and snorkeling opportunities. Because it’s a free beach, there are no facilities here.

The unique feature of Dead End Beach is that it’s the ideal spot for plane-watching. The beach is located at the end of Montego Bay Airport. So you can experience the thrill of planes landing there occasionally. Despite being a free beach, tourists say it’s clean. However, it can be crowded in the high season.

Cornwall Beach Jamaica

Cornwall Beach is a private all-inclusive beach resort at the Royal Decameron. This pristine stretch of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water is ideal for relaxing in the Caribbean sun. An all-inclusive day pass gives you an all-you-can-eat buffet, free drinks, and access to a stunning beach, lounges, hammocks, beds, and beach chairs.

This beach is less crowded during cruise days than Doctor’s Cave. However, it’s more expensive, and the Wi-Fi is not free.

Explore Cultural Attractions and Historical Sites at Montego Bay

Of course, you may want to spend your cruise day in port at Montego Bay soaking up Jamaican culture and history rather than sun, sea, and water sports. How can you spend your day in Montego Bay without going to the beach? Here are a few ideas.

Tour the historical Greenwood Great House

One of the most popular cultural excursions for cruise ship passengers visiting Montego Bay is an excursion to the historical Greenwood Great House. It’s one of the best preserved plantation-era houses on the island. Attractions on the grounds include lush vegetation, antique horse-drawn carriages, and several houses.

Built in the late 18th century, Greenwood Great House was once the home of the Barrett family, one of Jamaica’s wealthiest and influential families. Many of the historical items remain in the Great House, giving you a glimpse into the life of plantation owners in the 18th century.

Take in tropical delights at Croydon Plantation

The Croydon Plantation is a working estate an hour’s drive from Montego Bay Cruise Port. The shore excursion to the foothills of the Catadupa Mountains lets you immerse yourself in Jamaica’s lush vegetation. Here, you can experience plantation history and taste locally grown produce like pineapples, citrus fruits, sugarcane, and coffee.

Shore excursions to Croydon plantation give you the chance to experience Jamaican culture and history. You can tour a working plantation, taste authentic Jamaican cuisine, and view the lush countryside as you explore the plantation.

Learn about Jamaica at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre

Montego Bay Cultural Centre

Visiting the Montego Bay Cultural Centre is a must for history buffs on a Jamaican cruise. Located in downtown Montego Bay, the museum features works of Jamaica’s famous painters, sculptors, and photographers. The center also features a bistro serving Jamaican cuisine and an art and craft shop.

You can include the Montego Bay Cultural Centre on a walking tour of downtown Montego Bay. You can get a unique insight into Jamaica’s history with its Rastafarian culture and slave work on plantations.

Explore Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall Great House Montego Bay

A shore excursion to Rose Hall Great House gives you a fascinating insight into Jamaica’s slave history.

The stunning Georgian mansion was once home to Annie Palmer—an owner of 2,000 enslaved people. She is also known as the “White Witch of Rose Hall,” who reportedly practiced voodoo and black magic on her slaves. She was murdered, and it’s said her spirit still haunts Rose Hall.

Shore excursions include transportation and guided tours of the Great House. You can listen to eerie tales of murder, betrayal, and witchcraft. Depending on the operator, tours include shopping at craft stalls and tasting authentic Jamaican cuisine.

Bellefield Great House

Bellefield Great House is a historic plantation house 15 minutes from the Montego Bay Cruise Port. A shore excursion gives you a glimpse into Jamaica’s rich past. Built in the 18th century, the Great House sits on over 10 acres of lush tropical gardens and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Visiting Bellefield Great House lets you see the elegantly furnished rooms. You can also learn about the sugar and rum-making process and get an insight into the estate’s history and former owners. You can also learn about Samuel Sharpe, leader of the 1832 slave rebellion. It’s one of the oldest sugar plantations on the island.

Experience authentic Jamaican culture at the Hip Strip and Margaritaville

Margaritaville

No visit to Montego Bay Cruise Port would be complete without exploring the Hip Strip and Margaritaville. Gloucester Avenue is home to the Hip Strip—a bustling thoroughfare lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Here, you can shop for souvenirs such as handcrafted jewelry, trinkets, and clothing.

Margaritaville in Montego Bay is a popular hotspot for visitors looking to experience authentic Jamaican culture. The lively restaurant and bar offers delicious authentic jerk chicken dishes, ice-cold drinks, and live music. You can also enjoy shooting into the Caribbean on a 120-foot (36 m) water slide.

Sample genuine Jamaican cuisine on a food tour in Montego Bay

Montego Bay in Jamaica is renowned for its exquisite cuisine. Jamaica is home to jerk cooking. This style of Caribbean cooking uses dry rub or wet marinades to spice up food. The hot spice mixture is referred to as Jamaican jerk spice.

Before you stop in Montego Bay on your Caribbean cruise, check out the various food options on offer. Various food tours include the following:

  • Jamaican street food tours to sample various local delicacies
  • Jamaica Jerk Experience to enjoy the spiciest and tastiest food on the island
  • Food tours that include plantation house excursions with samples of Jamaican cuisine, including steamed callaloo, jerk chicken, and coconut shrimp rundown.
  • Sample the street food from the several street vendors on the Hip Strip

Rastafari Indigenous Village

Rastafari Indigenous Village Montego Bay

To experience authentic Jamaican culture, book a shore excursion to the Rastafari Indigenous Village. Just a 20-minute drive from Montego Bay Cruise Port, the tour promises an immersive experience of Rastafarian culture and beliefs. The village is in a lush tropical setting, surrounded by beautiful gardens and fruit trees.

Arriving at the village, you are greeted with warm hospitality, including drumming, chanting, and Reggae music. Shore excursions also include vegan Rastafarian fare and opportunities to immerse yourself in Jamaican culture. Guided tours inform about the history, beliefs, and practices of Rastafari culture.

A tour of a Rastafari village allows you to learn about a unique culture that is utterly different from anything you’ve experienced.

Shopping in Montego Bay

Market at Montego Bay

A cruise day in Montego Bay wouldn’t be complete without shopping for traditional Jamaican souvenirs and crafts. In downtown Montego Bay, you will find several craft stalls and vendors selling trinkets. You can also book a private shopping tour that includes various sightseeing opportunities.

Here are a few ideas:

Whitter Village Shopping Mall:  This vast complex is in the exclusive Ironshore Montego Bay area. It comprises an indigenous-style center with a village square and various gift shops, restaurants, boutiques, and rum stores. Unfortunately, it’s very commercialized and lacks authentic Jamaican culture.

Private shopping tours:  You could also consider a private shopping tour with a local guide. While shopping for local goods, the guide will tell you about Montego Bay’s history and the Rastafari movement. Many guides include various historical sites in the bespoke excursion.

Appleton Estate Rum Distillery

Appleton Estate Rum Montego Bay

Learn about the history of Jamaica’s most popular products—rum. You can book a shore excursion to the famous Appleton Estate Rum Distillery from the Montego Bay cruise port. The journey is a 1hr 50 min drive through the picturesque Nassau Valley. You get to taste the finest rum in the Caribbean.

A tour of the Appleton Estate will teach you about the rum-making process from start to finish, which has been here since 1749. Knowledgeable guides will take you through the distillery, showing you the cane fields, fermentation process, distillation, and aging process. You will also be able to sample various rums produced at the estate.

It’s good to note that shore excursions can take up to seven hours. So, you must ensure you have enough time to return to the cruise ship. Also, not all tour operators include the distillery entry fee, lunch, and refreshments in the price.

Visiting Montego Bay on a Cruise: FAQs

You probably have many questions if it’s your first time docking at Montego Bay on a Caribbean cruise. Here are answers to some of the most common questions cruise passengers ask when planning a cruise day in Montego Bay.

What is the best time to visit Montego Bay on a cruise?

The best time to visit Montego Bay on a Caribbean cruise is during the dry season —December to April. This period offers sunny weather and minimal rainfall, which is ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, avoiding Jamaica from midsummer through November would be best due to the heat, high humidity, and strong winds.

Is it safe to walk around Montego Bay?

Walking around the tourist areas of Montego Bay is safe. However, it’s vital to remember the typical advice for cruise tourists in the Caribbean—remain cautious and aware of your surroundings, don’t have expensive personal belongings on show, and keep valuables secure.

What currency is used in Montego Bay?

The official currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD), sometimes written as J$. Most vendors at Montego Bay and tourist destinations accept US dollars. However, they may give you local currency in change. So, checking if you get dollars in change when paying in USD is worthwhile.

What should I pack for a day trip to Montego Bay?

For your cruise day in Montego Bay, pack the essentials—biodegradable sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear, and comfortable walking shoes. If you plan on swimming in the sea, a pair of water shoes is needed to protect your feet from sharp stones and sea urchins. And don’t forget your camera to capture the beautiful scenery.

Is there specific etiquette I should be aware of when interacting with locals?

When interacting with locals, it’s essential to be respectful and polite. Greeting people with a smile and using courteous language goes a long way. It’s good to note that some street vendors can be pushy. However, a polite “no thank you” is usually sufficient to curb their advances.

Is there WiFi available at the cruise port or in Montego Bay?

WiFi is available at the cruise port and in many establishments throughout Montego Bay, including hotels, restaurants, and cafes.

What languages are spoken in Montego Bay?

English is the official language of Jamaica. So, you will have no problem communicating in English. Jamaican Patois is commonly spoken among locals but is typically not a barrier to communication for English speakers. Jamaican Patois is an English-based Creole language with West African influences.

What should I do in an emergency while I’m in Montego Bay?

In an emergency in Montego Bay, dial 119 for police assistance. Your cruise line operator should also provide you with a number for emergency assistance.

Montego Bay Cruise Port Guide: Tips, Attractions, Beaches

The Montego Bay cruise port is a western Caribbean cruise destination and the tourism capital of Jamaica.

The second largest city on the island is a hub for many visitors to Jamaica. Besides a cruise terminal, the city also has the Sangster International Airport.

It is the flight destination for anyone planning to stay in hotels or resorts for Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, among other locations. Sangster is only 70 minutes by air from Miami, FL.

Cruise ships often come to Montego Bay from embarkation ports such as Tampa , New Orleans and Galveston and continue on to the likes of Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is montego bay.

Montego Bay is on the northwestern coast of Jamaica . The port is about 90 minutes west of the popular cruise port at Ocho Rios and 233 miles east of the Grand Cayman cruise port.

Cruise ships often include both Montego Bay and Grand Cayman as ports of call on the same western Caribbean cruise.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Walking around attractions.

Montego Bay has a population of more than 80,000 people. So it’s surprising that it doesn’t have much in the way of a cruise terminal or developed tourist area by the cruise docks.

Nor does it have the same historical attractions and other points of interest within walking distance of the cruise port as some other Caribbean destinations.

Anyone who wants a taste of the Montego Bay history, culture and cuisine is better off paying for a guided shore excursion that takes them through the city. Otherwise, the best attractions are near the port rather than in it.

Shore Excursions

A city tour may include arts and crafts vendors and 18th century cannons in Old Fort Craft Park, the historic St. James Parish Church and John’s Hall Plantation. This four-hour tour has tickets starting at $75.

More adventurous cruise visitors will have shore excursions ranging from Jamaican bobsledding to bamboo rafting, ziplining, kayaking, waterfalls, beaches and dolphin swims.

Mystic Mountain is an entertainment complex 90 minutes east of the cruise port that offers “bobsledding”, zip lining and other activities in one package. Despite the distance, it is a common cruise shore excursion. Prices depend on the program, but $125 to $150 per person is common for this seven-hour tour.

Adventurous cruise visitors can raft and kayak on the mild Great River. They take excursion buses inland to the starting point, drift down river to the ocean and reach Great River Bay about seven miles south of the cruise port. These river tours cost about $70 per person. Prices vary somewhat depending on whether they involve a raft or kayak.

Like many Caribbean cruise destinations, Montego Bay has an attraction where visitors can swim and interact with dolphins. Dolphin Cove is 18 miles west of the cruise docks. Ticket prices vary by program, but $125 to $150 per person is about average.

Rose Hall Great House is a chance to visit the home of the “white witch of Rose House” and hear a few horror stories to chill the bones under a hot Jamaican sun. It is about 35 minutes northeast of the cruise port. Prices for this three-hour tour are about $60 per person with discounts for children. Prices vary with sailings and time of year.

The Georgian mansion is an 18th century plantation home that was refurbished in the 1960s. Decor and furnishings reflect the 18th century lifestyle. Tropical gardens add a bonus for visitors.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Some of the better beaches are on resort properties.

The city has plenty of nearby beaches with at least nine of them within five miles of the cruise port. Dump-Up Beach and Events Park is right in the city and often crowded. Belvedere, Cornwall, Doctor’s Cave and Walter Fletcher beaches are a mile or less away from downtown.

Doctor’s Cave Beach is located on Montego Bay. This pretty beach has more to offer its visitors than fine white sand.

Doctor’s Cave beach is arguably one of the best locations on the island for exploring the world underneath the crystal clear water.

Aqua Sol Theme Park a few miles north of the cruise docks is mostly just a beach with an entrance fee rather than a park.

Otherwise, cruise line shore excursions to beaches often take passengers to resort beaches for the sake of a better overall experience.

Shopping / Restaurants

The closest shopping to the cruise docks is at Montego Freeport, which is a brief walk straight south.

Many-free shops are at the City Centre Shopping Mall, which is two and a half miles north of the docks. It is right by the Aqua Sol Theme Park and Dump Up Beach and Events Park.

Look for the nearby Old Fort Craft Park, which is a robust arts and crafts market. Shoppers at each place should be prepared for aggressive vendors.

Getting Around / Transportation

Some Caribbean cruise ports have great public transportation. Others do not. Montego Bay falls in the second category.

Taxi drivers in Montego Bay do not have the best reputation. Rates are metered. Be sure to ask for the rate before getting into the cab.

Perhaps the best option for getting around is with cruise excursion buses. Although a cruise excursion is sometimes more expensive than taking a taxi, it’s worth considering for Montego Bay visitors.

Weather / Best Times to Go

Any month is a good time for weather in Montego Bay except for a short rainy season in May and a heavier rainy season in August, September and October caused by the annual Caribbean hurricane season.

Rainfall averages one to three inches a month from January through April and again in July, according to the Meteorological Service of Jamaica. It’s at least four inches during the other months of the year and reaches a high point of nearly seven inches in October.

The average high temperature is 88 degrees Fahrenheit or about 31 Celsius during the summer months. The averages high stay in the low 80s Fahrenheit or upper 20s Celsius during the winter.

The best months to go for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain are April and July. These recommendations are based on long-term weather patterns and may vary from year to year.

Montego by cruise port| source: jamaica quest tours

With Montego Bay being not just Jamaica’s second city, but also one of the island’s main tourism hubs, it is not surprising that it also has one of the busiest cruise ports on the island.

Some very well-known cruise lines such as Carnival, MSC, and NCL, as well as Viking and Cunard, frequently stop in Montego Bay. The Montego Bay Cruise Port is located in an area called Freeport. With 6 berths, the port can accommodate up to 4 cruise ships at once, though this happens very rarely. There is only one sizeable terminal building, which isn’t quite sophisticated but nonetheless provides all necessary services.

You will also find standard duty-free and gift stores, bathrooms, and a beverage stand. If you arrive at the Montego Bay Cruise Port and plan on exploring the city one of your best options is to get assistance from a Tourist Office booth at the port. This is also the best spot to inquire about the official taxi rates.

Getting into the City from the Montego Bay Cruise Port

Walking is not a great option, it is around a 3-mile walk on a busy highway with nowhere to stop and catch a breather in between. Your best bet to get downtown is to simply grab a taxi. The taxi fare situation can be a bit tricky. Currently for locals, getting from Freeport to Downtown Montego Bay may cost just about $150 Jamaican dollars which is the equivalent of $1 USD. However, taxi drivers that park outside the cruise port terminal and caters specifically to tourist will charge around $5 USD. If you are going to a specific location besides downtown Montego Bay, for example, the Hip strip or Rose Hall, the prices will increase.

How far is the cruise port from Montego Bay Airport?

The Montego Bay Cruise Port is approximately a 15-minute drive, however, this can be much longer depending on the traffic which is usually intense during the evening hours.

What is the closest beach to Montego Bay cruise port?

The Closest Beach to the Montego Bay Cruise Port is the Harmony Beach Park. It is a new park, completely free, with beach access, food shops, a jogging trail, a basketball court and much more.

Things to do near the Montego Bay cruise port

Once you get to Montego Bay, whether your cruise is docking just for a few hours or a full day or 2, there are some places you must visit.

You have not truly visited Montego Bay if you haven’t been on the Hipstrip. The actual name is Jimmy Cliff Boulevard named after our music icon but is commonly referred to as bottom road by the locals. If you are looking to experience the beaches, and the best restaurants and bars, clubs and chill spots in Montego Bay, this is the place to be. Try popular restaurants like Margaritaville and Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records, take a dip at the Doctor’s Cave Beach or have some fun at the Coral Cliff Gaming Lounge.

Sam Sharpe Square

This is the city's centre and the highlight here is the Monument of our national hero, Sam Sharpe. There is also a water fountain and a small museum and the square is a popular spot for hosting free events, so you might get there when it is a bit crowded. During the evening you will also find several food vendors, selling jerk chicken and pork, soup and Jamaican-style egg sandwiches.

Rastafari Villages

If like many you are intrigued by the Rastafari Lifestyle, you can make this a cultural and learning experience. The Rastafari Indigenous Village is situated about 15 minutes from the cruise port. This cultural centre introduces you to the true Rastafarian traditions, enabling you to intimately connect with a fascinating group of individuals. Rastafarianism is a spiritual and political movement that emerged in the nation of Jamaica. You'll learn about their beliefs, way of life, and music here.

Golfing is another great option just a little bit further away from the Hip strip. Montego Bay's four championship golf courses, which are located roughly 20 to 30 minutes from your ship, make Jamaica the ideal destination for golf enthusiasts. Play exciting rounds of golf at the two courses of the renowned Rose Hall Estate, which also serves as a beautiful historical monument. There is also the White Witch Golf Course and the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course. The golf course at Half Moon, which lies nearby, has frequently been named among the best in the world.

However you choose to spend your time once you get to Montego Bay, you will be sure to have an amazing time. Not coming in on a cruise ship but still want to see these places? Let us know here and we will get you there.

montego bay jamaica cruise port things to do

Montego Bay – Jamaica

Last updated on June 7th, 2023 at 09:07 am

Experience the vibrant energy of Montego Bay, Jamaica's lively second city. Lounge on world-famous beaches, explore the historic Rose Hall Great House, or take a thrilling adventure on a bamboo raft along the Martha Brae River. Indulge in spicy jerk cuisine, immerse yourself in reggae rhythms, and let the warm hospitality of Montego Bay envelop you.

Montego Bay, Jamaica has a port on the Northwest side of the island. Interestingly, as the fourth-largest urban area, it is only one of two incorporated cities on the island; the other being Kingston. Knowing the lingo whenever your ship docks are always fun, so during your excursions and shopping be prepared to hear locals refer to Montego Bay as MoBay or simply, Bay. With warm sandy beaches and the pristine clear waters known throughout the Caribbean , Montego Bay is a hotbed of activity for cruisers whether you are looking for island shopping, relaxing on the beach, or an adventurous excursion.

While the local currency is the Jamaican dollar, the U.S. dollar is widely accepted. ATMs are available throughout Montego Bay.

English is commonly spoken, although if you want to engage with locals be prepared to listen as they commonly speak English with their own words and a thick accent.

Where You Dock in Montego Bay – Jamaica

Cruise ships dock at the Montego Freeport Port which is a few miles from the Montego Bay downtown, although you won’t have any problem finding taxis, buses and other services to bring you into the city, surrounding beaches or attractions. You’ll likely spend about $5.00 to get from the ship to the shopping.

The port does not have ATM if you want to grab cash quick, but you can find ATMs throughout the city.

NOTE: Sadly, Jamaica is known for its high crime rate, so you should consider keeping your valuables locked aboard ship and be careful when carrying cash, wallets and purses.

Getting Around Montego Bay – Jamaica

Montego Bay is one of the busiest destinations in the Caribbean . While it can get busy at times, this also means that Jamaica has put a lot of money toward local infrastructure and amenities. So, if you’re trying to get around the island, transportation is not going to be a problem. You can expect nearly any kind of transportation on the island, such as:

Taxis in Montego Bay

Like most of Jamaica, taxi services are well-regulated as long as you choose an officially licensed and insured company. A key note for Montego Bay is that there are two types of taxi services – Route and Charter.

Route taxi services travel within city limits or from one city to another similar to scheduled buses. Charter taxi services are likely what most people think of when they think, taxi. Charter services will deliver you and your party wherever you’d like to go.

Unlike other islands, taxi rates for Montego Bay and the rest of Jamaica are set prices rather than metered. Charter taxis are set by the company and route taxis are set by the government.

Depending on where you go, rates from Montego Bay port to the rest of the island can range from $5.00 to downtown Montego Bay up to $100 to Negril.

Buses in Montego Bay

Taking a bus from Montego Bay to nearly anywhere else on the island is likely your best value for transportation. In fact a lot of destinations are around $1.00.

Keep in mind that while a great value, buses are often crowded, lack air conditioning and only accept local currency. Be aware that the buses probably won’t make change, so bring exact amounts for your destination.

Car rentals in Montego Bay

Montego Bay has a long list of car rental services with local services as well as big names Avis, Budget, Hertz and Nationwide. So, finding what you are looking for isn’t going to be a problem. However, due to the narrow and winding roads. Jamaica does have age restrictions for car rentals that range from 23 to 75-years-old. In addition, you need a valid driver’s license and a credit card with a high available balance as the “hold” for rental cars can go as high as $2,500.

Depending on the type of vehicle and other considerations you can rent an economy car for as little a $23/day and $140/week to as high as $135/day and $1000/week.

Moped and Bike rental :

Montego Bay has a couple shops that offer moped, motorcycle and bicycle rental. However, there is a strong discretion when you are driving these vehicles on the roads outside of the city as Jamaica has some of the most dangerous streets in the Caribbean.

Helicopter :

Depending on how long you’re docked into Montego Bay, you might want to take advantage of the Island Hoppers that takes tourists around key points on the island. There are several packages offering 25, 40 and 90 mile trips.

Shopping In Montego Bay – Jamaica

Montego Bay provides a great shopping experience for any travellers offering the typical island fare from t-shirts to jewelry, spices, rum, local music, art and crafts.

The best place to start your shopping adventure is The Shoppes at Rose Hall . The area has 31 shops to find that perfect gift or souvenir as well as a gourmet restaurant and coffee house. Relax in the local bistro or stroll the beautiful brick and stone walkways.

In addition to The Shoppes at Rose Hall is The Blue Diamond Shopping Plaza which has souvenirs, jewelry and health/spa options.

Dining In Montego Bay – Jamaica

Montego Bay features a long list of dining options from casual to fine dining. While you will find restaurants such as Burger King, Pizza Hut and KFC, most people come to Jamaica for the local cuisine, whether you are looking for fresh seafood or island staples such as patties you’d find at Juici Patties .

Each restaurant in Montego Bay features unique scenery and design from the Houseboat Grill which is moored in the Montego Bay Marine Park Fish Sanctuary to the architecturally stylish Hard Rock Cafe .

Pier One on the Waterfront features Jamaica’s freshest open-air restaurant, bar and entertainment.

The Sugar Mill Plantation quietly hugs the serenity of a 17th century water mill.

Marguerite Seafood by the Sea is listed as the Best Seafood in Montego Bay and is known for not only other cruisers, but also regular sightings of celebrities.

Things To Do in Montego Bay – Jamaica

Stunning sandy beaches, fabulous local restaurants and tons of shopping aside, Montego Bay offers more activities than most port destinations. Whether you are into watersports, art, golf or history Montego Bay has something for everyone.

Water sports :

Montego Bay is a haven for water sport lovers. From close-to-shore jet skis to short island catamaran cruises you can enjoy the water, beaches and take a trip away from the bustle of the city.

Enjoy sport fishing with Ezee-Sportfishing who will take you in pursuit of yellowfin tuna, sailfish, white marlin, blue marlin and more. Or, you can head over to CJ Watersports who offer a variety of water activities such as para-sailing, fishing, water skiing, SCUBA diving and speed boat cruises.

Beaches near Montego Bay

Not surprising, Montego Bay has some great beaches. However, most of the beaches are restricted to all-inclusive resorts. So, unless you’re at those hotels on a day pass, you’ll have to opt for those beaches on another trip.

Resort Day Pass  –  Spend the day in luxury at the boutique Zoetry Montego Bay resort. With the all-inclusive day pass with ResortPass, not only do you get beach access, you can enjoy their 3 pools, unlimited food and drinks, watersports, daily entertainment, activities like afternoon tea and cooking lessons, fitness center, and complimentary WiFi. The resort is a short 8 mile taxi ride from the cruise terminal. Click here to purchase.

Still, even without a day pass, cruisers can take advantage of some amazing beaches, and here are a few:

If you don’t mind local peddlers trying to sell you their homemade jewelry or tourist traffic on ship days, then Doctor’s Cove Beach is a spectacular place to enjoy the softness of sand, nearly perfect crystalline water and plenty of places to just lounge about. Be prepared that Doctor’s Cove is a private beach, so there will be a cost, but it’s well worth it.

Aquasol beach is the closest beach when you come into port, but it’s not the busiest beach which can bode well for you if you just want to get off the ship and hit the water. The beach is family-oriented with go-karts, waterslides and other entertainment to keep the family busy (you know, besides the water). The beach also tends to be popular with locals and often has small parties.

Dump-up Beach is a free public beach that is popular with locals and cruisers alike. The beach is a nice wide crescent of sand and a turquoise blue sea where you can spend plenty of time taking in the sun and playing in the soft waves.

Dead End Beach is another free public beach. It may not be as popular as other beaches, but that in now way means it’s not beautiful. The caveat is that there are no facilities such as bathrooms or showers, but you can find food vendors in public areas.

Golf in Montego Bay :

Jamaica has a dozen golf courses to choose from, but if you’re pulling into the port at Montego Bay you have four great courses to quickly hop off the ship and travel to.

Half Moon Golf Club has several “Jamaica’s Best” awards  and like many courses is built on the grounds of a 17th century plantation replete with ruins.

Tryall Club is a world-class golf course peacefully hidden and recently rebuilt to update it to modern expectations of golfing luxury.

Cinnamon Hill Golf Club is a competitive course that runs from open views of the Caribbean, through foothills and along dense foliage as you try to avoid strategically placed bunkers.

Negril Hills Golf Club is an 18-hole par 72 course that exudes luxury and the tropical beauty you would expect from Jamaica. While outside Montego Bay, this course is well worth the visit if you have an extended stay.

Other Montego Bay Attractions:

Jamaica was built on the sugar trade and as such as several plantations still in existence, many of which have been turned into museums and allow the public to explore on their own or on historic tours. A couple plantation sites to visit near Montego Bay are the Croydon Plantation, Greenwood Great House and the Rose Hall Great House which has a notorious history surrounding the a woman named Annie Palmer.

If you are a lover of animals and nature you’ll love the Half Moon Equestrian Centre which provides adventurous trail rides, horse swimming and riding lessons. At the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary you can experience feeding hummingbirds from your hands.

For the more adventurous you can head over to the Canopy Tour which consists of five horizontal traverses, the longest about 1000 feet.

montego bay jamaica cruise port things to do

Cruiseable team

On a cruise ship, cruiseclout score: 95.0, montego bay port guide: what to do & see, top things to do & see , the hip strip.

Running parallel to the beach, Gloucester Avenue, or the “ Hip Strip ,” is home to some of the best waterfront dining spots in Jamaica, serving Caribbean and international cuisine. Here you'll also find attractions and entertainment options that include reggae clubs, Rastafarian art galleries, gaming lounges and duty-free shopping.

Beyond Gloucester Avenue is the downtown section of Montego Bay. Though most tourists don’t bother to venture beyond the strip, downtown is the essence of the city. The maze of pot-holed streets and avenues are littered with eager pushcart peddlers and competing storefronts that fuel the everyday Jamaica not found in colorful resort brochures. Downtown attractions include Sam Sharpe Square,  which is crowded with pedestrians, brightly painted old Gregorian buildings and the Museum of St. James , which bears witness to the tragic slave history of the city.

Beaches & water sports

In addition to postcard-worthy beaches, Montego Bay offers miles of coral reef and the vast Montego Bay Marine Park, which can be explored and admired while snorkeling or partaking in the many available water sports.

Family-friendly options

Montego Bay may be most known for its beaches and laid-back vibe, but it's also chock-full of family-friendly resorts with all-inclusive pricing — not to mention a plethora of kid-friendly activities. For example, kids stay and eat for free at Half Moon , where families will also find a children's village, kiddie pool and mini golf course. Kids will also love the Sunset Beach Resort, Spa & Waterpark,  complete with waterslides and a pool for each age group.

Yolo (you only live once!)

Once you've taken in the views and filled your extra suitcase with all the duty-free treasures you can find, take time to have an adventure with John's Hall Montego Bay Adventure Tours . Half-day tours from this company take you away from the tourist attractions and into the mountainous countryside where you can get true local flavor.

Or, if you're seeking a different kind of thrill, view the water from a new perspective with Kiteboarding Jamaica . This company offers three levels of lessons (discover, intermediate and independent) as well as equipment rentals.

The scene along Doctor's Cave Beach Club in Montego Bay, one of Jamaica's most famous beaches for nearly a century. It's known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sands.

Best bets for dining

Jamaican cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, British and Afro-centric influences. The most popular style of cooking native to the country is called jerk — a spicy and smoky seasoning on barbequed meats such as chicken, pork and beef. Some of the best jerk dishes can be found at places such as the Pork Pit overlooking the waterfront, and Belfield 1974 at the Barnett Estate  downtown. For a fine dining experience offering a romantic atmosphere and Caribbean cuisine, check out  Sugar Mill Restaurant . Dine by candlelight or on the terrace and enjoy classic dishes such as pumpkin soup, smoked marlin and curry chicken. For a panoramic view of the bay and some of the freshest seafood in town, grab a table at the open-air restaurant Pier One  on Howard Cooke Boulevard.

Best time to go

Montego Bay’s tropical climate is most appealing during the dry season from mid-December to mid-April. This is considered the best time to go as it avoids the intensely humid summer months and rainy autumn season when hurricanes are known to blast through. The peak season of winter to early spring brings in the highest volume of tourists, which in turn can raise prices on accommodations and attractions. That said, there isn’t a truly bad time to visit this island city, as the beautiful beaches and friendly, easygoing attitude of the locals are present year-round.

  • A former Spanish colony, the city was originally named “Golfo de Buen Tiempo” (Fair Weather Gulf) by Christopher Columbus in 1494.
  • Several famous scenes in the 1973 James Bond film "Live and Let Die," in which Roger Moore appeared as Bond for the first time, were filmed around Montego Bay.
  • Look to your left! Jamaicans drive on the left side of the road, so be aware if you plan to rent a car.
  • If Montego Bay is your port of call, feel the i-ray-tions at the Indigenous Rastafarian Village. For a local bite, scarf down the best in fusion Jamaican cuisine at the Native Restaurant.

When you arrive

Docking information.

Cruise ships dock a few miles outside of Montego Bay at the  Montego Freeport  port. There are basic facilities provided at the port, but most people prefer to travel into the city of Montego Bay as the shopping and facilities are much nicer. It’s about a five-minute taxi ride into Montego Bay for a $5 fixed rate.

Getting around

Taxis line up where you exit the terminal building, and all of the taxis arriving there are licensed by the Jamaica Tourist Board. For safety, it’s always recommended to take a taxi from either the Jamaica Union of Travelers Association, Jamaica Cooperative of Automobile and Limousine Tours or Maxi Taxi. Fares are set and rates are listed in the terminal for all popular destinations. Fares are charged per passenger; make sure you negotiate a price before you get in.

Need to know

Documents: A passport is required for travel to/from Montego Bay.

Language: The official language is English.

Currency: While you are welcome to use a Cambio upon arrival to exchange your money to the local Jamaican dollar, almost all hotels, restaurants and shops in the tourist areas accept the U.S. dollar.

Tipping: In many restaurants, you will be presented a hand-written bill, and you won't be able to tell if a service charge has been added or not. Ask before leaving a tip if a service charge has been included. If you do tip, tip 10-15%, depending upon the service.

Store hours:  Most stores are open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm and closed on Sunday. Some stores in the cruise terminal may stay open on Sunday.

Safety:  While Montego Bay is a relatively safe city, normal precautions should be observed. Stay in groups, and stick to tourist areas. Most locations in close proximity to the resorts are safe; rural areas can be especially dangerous.

Jamaicans are very friendly people. In touristy areas though, be aware that many people who welcome you, ask you where you're from and offer advice are looking for money .

History of Montego Bay Cruise Port

The Montego Bay Cruise Port has a fascinating history that dates back to the early days of Jamaica’s tourism industry. The port, also known as the Montego Freeport, was first constructed in the 1960s to accommodate the increasing number of cruise ships visiting Jamaica.

Prior to the construction of the dedicated cruise port, cruise ships would anchor in Montego Bay’s natural harbor and passengers would be ferried ashore. Recognizing the need for a more efficient and convenient way for passengers to disembark, the Jamaican government invested in creating a purpose-built facility that could handle the growing cruise industry.

Over the years, the Montego Bay Cruise Port has undergone several expansions and renovations to accommodate larger cruise ships and provide enhanced facilities for passengers. Today, it stands as a modern and bustling hub for thousands of cruise ship passengers who visit the island each year.

One of the key factors that contributed to the growth of Montego Bay as a cruise ship port was its proximity to the Sangster International Airport. This allowed for easy access and efficient transportation connections for passengers arriving by air to embark on their cruise vacation.

Another significant development in the history of the Montego Bay Cruise Port was the establishment of the Montego Bay Marine Park. The marine park was created to protect and preserve the vibrant coral reefs and marine life that surround the port. It provides an important ecological and educational resource for visitors and locals alike.

Today, the Montego Bay Cruise Port has become one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean, with ships from major cruise lines calling on a regular basis. The port welcomes passengers from around the world, offering them a taste of Jamaica’s unique culture, warm hospitality, and breathtaking natural beauty.

As you explore the Montego Bay Cruise Port, you’ll be able to see remnants of its history and witness the ongoing development aimed at providing an exceptional experience for cruise ship passengers. From the moment you step off your ship, you’ll be immersed in the vibrant atmosphere and charm that Montego Bay has become known for.

Arriving at the Montego Bay Cruise Port is an exciting experience, as you disembark your cruise ship and step into the vibrant energy of Jamaica. Here’s the essential information you need to know for a smooth arrival and departure:

Upon arriving at the port, you’ll be directed to the terminal building, where you’ll go through customs and immigration. It’s important to have your valid passport and any necessary travel documents ready for inspection. Once you’ve cleared customs, you’ll find an array of facilities and services within the terminal, including duty-free shops, restaurants, and currency exchange counters.

As you prepare to explore Montego Bay, it’s important to keep in mind the scheduled departure time of your cruise ship. Make sure to allow enough time to return to the port before your ship’s departure, taking into account traffic conditions and any planned activities or excursions.

When departing from the Montego Bay Cruise Port, you’ll go through the embarkation process, which includes passing through security check-in and customs procedures. It’s advisable to disembark the ship with your necessary travel documents and any belongings you’ll need for the day, while keeping the majority of your luggage within the ship’s designated collection area.

It’s recommended to keep track of the specific instructions provided by your cruise line regarding departure procedures and timing. The cruise staff and port authorities will provide guidance throughout the process to ensure a smooth and efficient departure from Montego Bay.

For passengers who are interested in extending their stay in Montego Bay after their cruise, it’s essential to have a plan in place for transportation and accommodations. Montego Bay offers a wide range of hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals to suit every budget and preference. It’s advisable to book in advance to secure your desired accommodations.

Transportation Options from the Port

After arriving at the Montego Bay Cruise Port, you’ll have various transportation options to explore the city and its surrounding attractions. Here are the different modes of transportation available:

  • Taxis and Shuttles: Taxis are readily available at the port and are a popular choice for transportation in Montego Bay. Licensed taxis have red license plates and operate based on standard fares or negotiated rates. It’s always a good idea to confirm the price before getting in and ensure that the taxi is officially licensed. Additionally, some cruise lines offer shuttle services from the port to popular attractions or downtown areas, providing a convenient and organized transportation option.
  • Private Transfers: For those seeking a more personalized and hassle-free experience, private transfers are a great option. You can arrange for a private car or van to pick you up directly from the port and take you to your desired destination. These transfers can be pre-booked through various companies or organized by your cruise line, offering comfort and convenience.
  • Car Rentals: If you prefer the flexibility of driving yourself, car rental services are available near the port. Many major international car rental companies, as well as local operators, have offices in Montego Bay. It’s important to have a valid driver’s license and be familiar with Jamaican road rules before renting a car.
  • Public Transportation: Montego Bay has a public transportation system consisting of buses and shared taxis known as “route taxis”. These options are generally more affordable but may not be as reliable or convenient for tourists. Keep in mind that public transportation may not always take you directly to your desired destination, and it’s important to have small bills and coins for fare payment.
  • Excursion Transfers: If you’re planning on participating in a shore excursion or organized tour, transportation is often included as part of the package. Whether it’s a scenic tour, adventure activity, or cultural experience, your tour operator will usually arrange for transportation to and from the port, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience.

When choosing your transportation option, consider factors such as your desired level of convenience, budget, and time constraints. It’s always a good idea to research and plan ahead to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey in Montego Bay.

Whichever mode of transportation you choose, make sure to enjoy the scenic views and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Montego Bay. The city’s sights, sounds, and flavors await you, ready to provide an unforgettable Jamaican experience!

Sightseeing:

Montego Bay is Jamaica's second city in size and importance, but it is the island's tourism capital. It boasts the most hotel accommodation, the most transport facilities and is, in fact, a cosmopolitan holiday center, offering a wide choice of amenities. Montego Bay is divided into three fairly distinct parts. There is the city itself with its crowded streets. There is the "hotel area" which is the mile-and-a-half strip running from the town, past the celebrated Doctor's Cave Beach and out to the Dead End Bar. Thirdly, there are the outlying hotels and villas on beach or hillside.

City streets are crowded, colorful and lively. Country folk flock in to visit markets, shops and banks. Guests from hotels and cruise ships make their way to in-bond shops and Crafts Markets. Housewives, office girls and market higglers promenade round bar-front discussion groups and sidewalk domino games.

Architecture is a mixture of last-century "gingerbread" wooden houses interspersed with modern buildings, many of which harmonize because Georgian facades never really went out of fashion.

Sam Sharpe Square, a pleasant cobble stoned hub of activity, is roughly the center of the town where stands the Cage, formerly a jail for runaway slaves, and the ruins of the Courthouse, built in 1804 and destroyed by fire some 20 years ago.

Doctor's Cave Beach is in MoBay $5 per person entry.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Don't be afraid to take Jamaican local buses. They are 10 times cheaper than tourist taxis. Don't let those (tourist) taxi drivers rip you off. Local taxis (called "route taxis") are an interesting way to get around and far cheaper than tourist taxis.

Car-rental fees in Jamaica include the cost of insurance. Driving in Jamaica is done on the left side of the road.

Shopping and Food

City center, in true Jamaican tradition, is not the center of the city but it is the center of in-bond shopping where all the major in-bond stores are situated.

The main Crafts Market is on harbor Street close to Sam Sharpe Square, but there are two smaller ones in the hotel area, one next to Fantasy Hotel and another on Fort Street on the site of a 17th century fort. Bargaining is expected with crafts vendors.

There are a number of other shopping arcades in Montego Bay where the visitor can shop for souvenirs: St. James and Fantasy Plazas are situated in the hotel area and Montego Bay Plaza and Bay West Plaza are on the waterfront in town. Further a field lies the Montego Freeport Shopping center to the west of town and the Blue Diamond Plaza to the east.

Holiday Village, also to the east, in front of Holiday Inn, is the largest shopping center in Montego Bay, with an extensive selection of in-bond stores, souvenir and craft stores, all within easy walking distance. It also boasts an art gallery.

Half Moon Shopping Village, is a very luxurious shopping area, attached to the Half Moon Hotel.

Falmouth, Jamaica Cruise Port

falmouth jamaica cruise port

The port in Falmouth is unique in that it was designed as a joint venture between the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. This design makes the port an entertaining destination in and of itself.

The Historic Falmouth Cruise Port area is gated, and houses many stores, restaurants and bars that are popular with cruise passengers! Outside of the gates, you’ll find Old Town, where you can walk and visit some of the local landmarks.

With only two berths, this port is less busy than the nearby Montego Bay and Ocho Rios ports of call.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About the Falmouth Cruise Port

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

The country of Jamaica has its own currency, the Jamaican Dollar (abbreviated J$). However, like most Caribbean islands, in the Falmouth port, vendors will accept U.S. dollars as well.

The official language spoken in Jamaica is English, a result of the country’s many years under British rule. However, while English is the official language, don’t be surprised if you hear Jamaican Patois, a local creole language, spoken in informal settings.

The time zone on the island of Jamaica (and in the city of Falmouth) is the Eastern Time Zone. (EST)

The island of Jamaica has a hot and humid tropical climate. The average high temperatures range from 80-86 degrees F with lows between 75-80 degrees F.

Humidity in Falmouth is constantly on the high side, ranging between 75 to 78%.

Getting Around Falmouth, Jamaica

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

As cruise ship passengers exit the cruise ship into the Falmouth cruise port you’ll enter a gated retail complex. Passengers concerned about safety can feel comfortable within this gated area.

Just outside the gates is the historical town of Falmouth. It’s easy to walk around “Old Town” Falmouth. However, cruise passengers will want to use the usual caution when walking down the streets or alleyways.

To visit beyond the port of Falmouth, it’s best to book shore excursions through your cruise line or a reputable third party tour provider.

The gated retail complex in Falmouth is easy to get around on foot and is also wheelchair accessible.

Public Transit

Just before you exit the main terminal for both piers, you’ll find an information booth and a large lot where you can meet tour buses and vans for shore excursions.

Nearby you will find a fixed-rate taxi stand, with non-haggling rates posted to nearby sites.

You can also catch a bus from Falmouth to Montego Bay on the Montego Bay Metro. The trip will take about an hour, but public transportation should be used cautiously since there are not many buses and departure times available.

The 10 Best Falmouth Shore Excursions

You can experience Jamaica’s unique culture through music, food, and activities in Falmouth. Here are some of the best Falmouth Shore Excursions.

1. Hike the Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios

dunn's river falls, jamaica

The incredible terraced waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and makes for epic photos. The falls at this natural phenomenon are 180 feet high and 600 feet long and takes about an hour and a half to climb to the top.

Tour guides are available to help you climb and document your adventure with photos and videos available for purchase. Be sure to wear a swimsuit and leave your phone/camera in the provided lockers because you are certain to get wet.

Transportation to Dunns River from Falmouth port will take about an hour in each direction, which will be included in your excursion.

2. Bamboo Rafting on Martha Brae River

Jamaica bamboo river rafting

Although the legend of the Martha Brae River includes treasure hunters and a witch, this excursion is more about relaxation than adventure.

A guide with a long pole will direct your bamboo raft in the calm waters of Martha Brae River as you relax on a comfortable seat. Not only will you get to see the lush Jamaican countryside, but you’ll also get to hear entertaining stories, historical information, and possibly a song or two from your guide.

The Martha Brae River is only 6 miles south of Falmouth and is a great place to spend time in Jamaica.

3. Swing into the Blue Hole

This natural wonder is the best place for an adventurous excursion. You’ll hike up to a waterfall that ends in a gorgeous blue pool or “hole.” There are rope swings and cliff diving spots available.

The rocks can be slippery so good closed-toed shoes are a must. The waters are rough so only strong swimmers should attempt to jump in.

Blue Hole is about an hour and a half drive from the Falmouth port.

4. Snorkel at Doctors Cave Beach

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

Doctor’s Cave Beach is the most popular beach day excursion for cruise travelers! This beautiful beach is about a 45-minute drive from the Falmouth port. If you’re going on a family cruise, this is a great excursion option.

You’ll find calm areas as well as optional beach activities, like water trampolines and kayaks. If you go with an organized day tour, the entry cost is typically included.

However, if you go on your own or with a guide, the entry to Doctors Cave Beach costs $7. There are loungers and umbrellas available to rent as well as snorkeling equipment.

Food service is offered on the beach, however, be advised that it is often slow. It’s a good idea to order before you are hungry.

6. Explore the Green Grotto Caves

Green Grotto Caves, Jamaica

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Green Grotto caves, an excursion about 35 minutes from the Falmouth port.

Visitors to the Green Grotto might see 9 of the 21 species of Jamaican bats that live here. The walking tour cost includes hard hats and knowledgable guides that teach about the storied history of the caves.

At various times these caves have been known as the Runaway Bay Caves, Rum Caves, and Dairy Caves. They are currently named for the green algae that grow on their walls.

7. Grab a Jamaican Patty at Juici Patties

This local favorite is a must-visit for Jamaican cuisine while you are docked in Falmouth. Ground beef, chicken, shrimp, or vegetables are mixed with spices and cooked inside a flaky pastry shell (like a hand pie).

There are tasty Jamaican patties available within the gated port area, but if you want to go to #1-rated Juici Patties, it is about a five-minute walk from the port.

We can attest to trying these out, and they are good!

8. Try Traditional Jamaican Food at Pepper’s Jerk Center

Kill two Jamaican flavors with one stone at Pepper’s Jerk Center, a short 8-minute walk or 3-minute taxi ride from the Falmouth Port.

The customer service at this restaurant is great and the jerk chicken and rum punch will make you wish you had a longer port stay.

9. Good Hope Plantation/Eco Adventure Outpost

Situated on a 2000-acre former sugar plantation, the Chukka Eco Adventure Outpost at Good Hope will give you a glimpse into Falmouth’s 18th century history and the opportunity to have some adventures.

You can explore the immaculate grounds, tour the Good Hope Great House or participate in zip lining, bamboo rafting, river tubing, waterslides, and rum tasting.

Good Hope is a 25-minute drive from the Falmouth port and is a wonderful place to see the natural beauty of Jamaica.

10. Shop and Sample at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port

Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

This port was designed to be a destination itself, with a wide open area between brick buildings in the British Georgian architecture style commonly found in Jamaica.

Within the gated area you’ll find live music, food stands, restaurants, bars, arts and crafts vendors, and plenty of souvenirs. Try some famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and Jamaican rum. There are enough stores to keep you busy for several hours in this clean and well-maintained port.

One important thing to note, Margaritaville used to be a popular port attraction in Falmouth. Unfortunately, this location closed permanently in January 2023.

Please do not patronize places where animals are in captivity and exist only for human entertainment. These places are cruel - harsh environment for majestic beasts like the dolphin who roam free and dance in the water. Better maybe to charter a boat and ask the captain to take you out where you can see them in the wild. Of course, this does not guarantee you'll see any but if you do it's a thrill greater than these modern day freak shows. Cheaper too!

' class=

I have to completely agree with #1. Dolphin prisons are cruel....do some research to see why they are such a bad idea. Hire a boat captain and go see them in the wild...they are majestic. We have had the privilege of having them follow catamarans back into the bay..... Jumping and playing.
