The movie was clever, fun, and modernized Superman in a way that felt organic to the time period, while also respectful of what came before. It truly is one of our favorite pieces of Superman media."

My Adventures With Superman Makes 3 Major Changes to Clark Kent's Origin

My Adventures With Superman Clark Kent

My Adventures with Superman provides a modern spin on one of the most classic comic book stories ever told. The new anime-inspired iteration of Superman introduced a young, starry-eyed Clark Kent that's aspiring to find his place in the world, and it takes several liberties from the iconic origin story in doing so.

The new show on Adult Swim (and also streaming on Max ) works fast as it's already established the Man of Tomorrow's backstory and given him a couple of strong companions in Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.

But some of the details are vastly different from what fans are used to learning about Earth's extraterrestrial resident.

1.) Kid Clark Kent Can Fly

Clark Kent, My Adventures with Superman

For instance, Superman typically gains access to his powers as he grows up, slowly but effectively learning how to master his otherworldly abilities. My Adventures with Superman took a different approach, allowing a young Clark to discover (and master) his powers much more quickly.

The animated series kicks off its first episode by introducing a young Clark Kent who's gotten his kite stuck in a tree. While Clark is trying to figure out how he'll retrieve his toy, a car comes flying down the road and loses control when it hits a pothole.

Clark Kent, My Adventures with Superman

Naturally, Clark's instincts kick in and he uses his super speed and strength to keep the car from crashing. What's new, though, is that Clark takes immediate control of his newfound abilities within seconds of learning of them at this young age.

After saving the car from a potential wreck, Clark returns to the tree holding his kite. As he tries to jump up to get it, he realizes that not only is he super fast and really strong, but he can also fly. Without skipping a beat, Clark then takes flight over the cornfields of Smallville, spinning around and flipping about like an experienced fighter pilot.

It's a refreshing change of pace to have Clark Kent learn of his abilities at this young of an age, and it's exciting to think of the implications of how many years' worth of stories this show will have about a super-powered boy in Smallville, especially with Season 2 already on the horizon .

2.) Superman's Suit: An Intergalactic Collaboration

Martha Kent, Clark Kent, My Adventures with Superman

Old school comics always told the story that Superman's mom made his costume for him. Conversely, the newer iterations of the iconic hero add an extra layer to the classic red-and-blue thread, claiming that Superman's suit holds a more significant meaning to his Kryptonian heritage.

My Adventures With Superman decided to create a combination of costume ideas from the hero's history. When Clark emerges from the Kryptonian ship sporting a New 52 -inspired super suit, Martha jokes that the look was "missing something" before adding the classic trunks that have been missing from Superman's outfit in modern times.

Clark Kent, My Adventures with Superman

Making the iconic Superman suit come from Clark's extraterrestrial roots while also allowing his Earth mom to make the appropriate adjustments is a clever spin on the Man of Steel's timeless attire, giving it meaning from both sides of his unique origin.

3.) Superman's Escape Pod Is Alive

Clark Kent, My Adventures with Superman

When Clark activates his powers for the first time in My Adventures with Superman , his eyes glow blue and he is surrounded by sparks of electricity. This happens a second time to adult Clark, this time displaying a blue luminous Superman logo that hovers above his chest as his powers overcome him.

The Kryptonian escape pod that brought Superman to Earth, which is buried in the middle of a Smallville field, was also illuminated when this happened. Clark appears to have a biological connection with the ship, as it only activates otherwise when he steps onto it.

Clark Kent, My Adventures with Superman

What's more, the pod appears to have grown larger in the time it's been underground. The spaceship was no larger than the average man when it arrived on Earth with baby Clark, but when Superman revisited his origins in his twenties, it had grown to the size of a little league field in diameter and the inside looked like a command center. If the pod grows any larger, Superman's Fortress of Solitude may end up being in the middle of a cornfield.

There are several implications that the ship that Clark was sent to Earth in may have just as much of a purpose as the Kryptonian son himself. A new Kryptonian subplot surrounding the alien race's technology is another breath of fresh air as Superman will have plenty on his plate in the new animated adventure.

The first two episodes of My Adventures with Superman are now streaming on Max .

‘My Adventures With Superman’ Honors The Legacy Of The Man Of Steel With Smallville Spirit- Review

By Angel Amaral

I never thought I would see the day when Superman, my favorite character of all time, would get an anime intro and style for a serialized revamp of his story, but here we are, and it’s epic. It’s been decades since the world has seen a new animated Superman series. As a lifelong fan of DC, I’m ecstatic to report that My Adventures With Superman is a worthy successor to Superman: The Animated series as it evolves the iconic hero with modernized anime-inspired animation while staying true to his altruism.

my journey with superman

This fresh take, told through the team dynamic (Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen), allows for stronger character arcs and compelling relationships to flourish. Watching these episodes reminded me of my Saturday evenings watching Dragon Ball Z on Toonami, which is the best compliment I can give it. Stylistically and emotionally, it feels close to my unforgettable adventures with Goku as this story explores the interesting lives of these journalists on their journey together to become heroes in their own right.

My Adventures with Superman is an energetic and wholesome coming-of-age story filled with heart and vibrant colors as we venture with three best friends tackling news stories for the good of Metropolis. During their internship as investigative journalists, they take down villains with unique designs, uncover secrets, and understand what it means to be Superman.

Jack Quaid’s voice for Superman is as good as it sounded in the trailer. He delivers a wonderful performance in each episode, as it’s perfectly lighthearted and sincere! When things get serious, he turns on the mature tone required, and you’ll believe in his Superman to save the day.

my journey with superman

As expected, Lois Lane (Alice Lee) is the star investigative reporter. She’s ambitious, commands the room, and is driven to break an important story. Lois and Clark complement each other beautifully throughout their victories and struggles. These icons we know and love, but not without their flaws. This animated take feels like a genuine relationship constantly growing as they learn the significance of trusting one another. A healthy relationship has no room for secrets, which makes them better partners. This is arguably the most wholesome version of Lois and Clark ever. I love seeing them fall for each other immediately. Everyone will adore their relationship as they should since they are one of the ultimate power couples in fiction.

I love how Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) is portrayed in this show. Olsen is Clark and Lois’ best friend with crazy conspiracy theories about aliens but has unselfish regard to help others. As Clark’s roommate, he brings out the geek side of the farm boy from Kansas, which makes this iteration more lovable and relatable. Through their friendship, we learn that if someone cares for you, they want to know how you feel; you just need to speak your mind.

This younger take on Superman takes advantage of the fact that he’s inexperienced in fighting crime and unsure of himself, which is reminiscent of Smallville . Both shows deal with young Clark overcoming his superpowers and hiding his identity from his friends. It’s refreshing because it puts the viewer in a first-person point of view as we learn about Superman along the ride, like how his powers work and where he comes from. It’s all the more exciting during this phase of his life when we see his famous powers used for the first time. Superman fighting various powers from enemies while trying to figure out his own was a clever way to add tension against the Man of Steel and highlight Clark’s cunning mind as he adapts to whatever he’s fighting.

My Adventures With Superman - Still

“Who am I” is a constant question asked throughout the series, and the show’s answer put a big grin on my face. Who is Superman? To me, he’s a nice friend who has extraordinary powers and just wants to use them to help people. It impressed me how gracefully they capture the essence of the character because it’s really that simple; it’s not hard to believe that some people just want to help, and Superman is just that kind of being constantly. He must be inspiring, and the show succeeds with this crucial core characteristic. “At the end of the day, I’m here to help the people of Metropolis. Is everyone okay?” It’s lines like these and the actions of him prioritizing other lives before even knowing his limitations that exude optimism and hope. I always argue that the best aspect about Superman is not his super-powered side; his pure humanity shines here as the superhero antics and focus on relationships are balanced.

As a comfort show, you’ll want to continue hanging out with these characters, but at a certain point, the overarching story goes off the rails, and you’ll be hooked to see more with the wild direction they take. Comic book fans of today that love grand storytelling in this vast DC universe will be rewarded by this clear labor of love that respects the past and embraces the future of Superman. My Adventures With Superman is an uplifting chapter in Clark Kent’s history and offers a promising better tomorrow for glorious DC animation.

Rating: 9/10

My Adventures With Superman premieres on Adult Swim on July 6. New episodes will air every Thursday and stream the next day on Max.

Lois and Clark Pursue the Story of the Century in 'My Adventures With Superman' Trailer

The animated coming-of-age tale of Superman premieres with two episodes on Adult Swim on July 6.

Clark Kent is stuck between keeping his identity safe and finding the story of the century in a new trailer for My Adventures With Superman . The newest spin on the son of Jor-El will be a coming-of-age story following the twenty-somethings Clark, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen as they discover who they are and what they can achieve as a team while furthering their careers at the Daily Planet. With the new footage, Adult Swim also revealed that the series will premiere with two episodes on July 6.

Although Clark is in his twenties, the trailer shows a very different version of the hero as he's not yet in full control of his powers. He breaks his alarm clock when trying to gently turn it off, and he accidentally yanks a door handle off when trying to use it. His attempts to be a normal man having a normal day simply don't pan out as his instinct is to use his powers to help anyone in trouble too. As he tries to work out what he really is and come to grips with his abilities, he grabs the attention of driven up-and-coming reporter Lois Lane who is dying to figure out who Superman is, unknowingly dragging the Man of Steel into her investigation alongside fellow new recruit Jimmy. Their efforts land them in dangerous situations time and again, but they get closer and closer to the truth as Superman continuously arrives to save the day. By the end, Jimmy posits that the hero is nothing more than a plane and Clark is only content to throw them further astray by saying it looks more like a bird.

My Adventures With Superman is all about the journey of Clark, Lois, and Jimmy to becoming heroes in their own right by uncovering the truth and thwarting the plans of evildoers all while becoming star reporters. Romance is also in the air as the series will also track the growing love between Lois and Clark which is sure to get even messier as she gets closer to unveiling Superman's identity. Their story will unfold as part of the Elseworlds label , continuing alongside DC co-president James Gunn 's main continuity beginning with Superman: Legacy .

Who's Behind My Adventures With Superman ?

A superheroic cast leads the Adult Swim animated series with The Boys star Jack Quaid as Clark alongside Alice Lee as Lois and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy. Although a teaser from April debuted their voices, the trailer gives the first full look at the trio in character. They're guaranteed at least two seasons together on Adult Swim, meaning there are plenty of adventures to be had as the gang climbs the rungs of the Daily Planet hierarchy. Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network President Sam Register will executive produce the series with Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher as co-executive producers and Josie Campbell as co-producer.

My Adventures With Superman takes flight on Adult Swim with two episodes on July 6 at midnight with new installments following every Thursday. Encores will air every Friday at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim and Saturdays at midnight on Toonami. Episodes will also arrive on HBO Max on Fridays. Check out the trailer below.

REVIEW: My Adventures with Superman Blends Heart and Kinetic Action

My Adventures with Superman breathes new life into the Superman mythos, with an anime flair. Here's CBR's review of the new animated series.

The early days of the Man of Tomorrow are gorgeously reimagined in the new animated series My Adventures with Superman , launching this July on Adult Swim and Max. Vibrantly realized in an anime-inspired animation style and boasting a lively voice cast, the new series is a great introduction of Superman to new audiences and a fresh twist on the superhero for longtime fans. With every episode moving at a breakneck pace yet finding the time to deliver heartfelt character development, My Adventures with Superman reinvigorates the Man of Steel's animated legacy.

Now in his early 20s, Clark Kent moves from his hometown of Smallville to the bustling city of Metropolis to become an investigative journalist for The Daily Planet. Clark meets and immediately befriends fellow aspiring Daily Planet reporters Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, who are looking to break into the journalism industry themselves. However, as progressively more dangerous threats surface around Metropolis, Clark unveils his growing superpowers to mark the debut of his costumed alter ego Superman and save the day as he learns more about his Kryptonian heritage.

RELATED: My Adventures with Superman: Jake Wyatt Unveils a Fresh Take on the Man of Tomorrow

Jack Quaid leads the cast as a wide-eyed Superman, balancing the youthful exuberance and wonder of Clark first arriving in Metropolis with the steely determination of Earth's greatest hero. Watching Clark's trajectory as he embraces his superhero destiny is one of the longer-form joys of My Adventures with Superman , as well as his burgeoning friendships with Lois and Jimmy developing. Alice Lee and Ishmel Sahid bring the madcap energy as Lois and Jimmy, each eager to leave their mark on the world before the idealism of youth is tempered by the onset of adult cynicism.

Every episode has at least one big, bombastic action set piece, often involving some of the most iconic supervillains in Superman's rogues' gallery. Taking further cues from its anime influences , My Adventures with Superman keeps its action sequences propulsive and visually easy to follow, often tying into Superman's growing abilities as an extension of his journey of self-discovery. More to the point, they're seamlessly rendered and entertaining to watch, coming in like a climactic punctuation to each episode's narrative.

My Adventures with Superman does offer some major twists to the Superman mythos that established fans may be caught off-guard by, but it sticks to the fundamental truths of the main characters. At its core, this is a hopeful vision of Superman making friends after moving to the big city and stepping out on his own as an adult for the first time. The changes to the mythos serve to further that underlying story, and they do so organically while tweaking elements to recontextualize the broader strokes for modern audiences.

Ever since the first images for My Adventures with Superman were released, the show has experienced its fair share of online buzz. Fortunately, My Adventures with Superman more than lives up to the hype as a fresh and engaging take on the Superman mythos that stands as a fantastic animated superhero show in its own right and finds a new way to appreciate the Man of Steel. Catch this show at the ground level because it's quickly poised to blast off up, up, and away.

Developed for television by Jake Wyatt, My Adventures with Superman premieres July 6 on Adult Swim, with episodes available to stream the following day on Max.

Jack Quaid says season 2 of My Adventures with Superman is “in the can”

November 15, 2023 by Ricky Church

While we have a couple of years until Superman’s return on the big screen , the Man of Steel has still been thriving on TV with  Superman & Lois , its final season premiering next year , and the animated series  My Adventures with Superman  which premiered this summer and has a second season on the way. Now Jack Quaid, who voices Clark Kent/Superman in the series, has given an update on the upcoming season’s development.

My Adventures with Superman  follows a young Clark Kent as he becomes Superman in Metropolis while working as an intern alongside Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen at the Daily Planet. As Clark’s powers grow and he uncovers more about his mysterious heritage, Lois tries making her name at the Planet by investigating Superman’s identity while Metropolis is besieged by super-powered villains. At the same time, a dangerous government entity targets Superman for the threat he may pose to the world.

Taking to social media on X (formerly Twitter), Quaid expressed his excitement over the series and revealed most of if not all of the work on season two has been completed. “Couldn’t have been happier with the response to #MyAdventuresWithSuperman. Thank you to everyone who watched it. It was an absolute DREAM to voice this character. We [already] have a season 2 in the can, so get ready for more at some point!”

Quaid is no stranger to comic book properties or animation as he is currently a lead in the animated  Star Trek: Lower Decks as Brad Boimler, a role he even acted in live-action in the latest season of  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , and is a lead in Amazon’s adaptation of  The Boys . He also provided his voice in the adaptation of  Batman: The Long Halloween  and had a cameo as an alternate universe Peter Parker in  Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse .

My Adventures with Superman  was given a two-season order when it was announced in 2021. The first season consisted of 10 episodes and the second season will have the same amount. As of now there has been no indication of when season two will premiere, but it is likely to aim for a summer 2024 premiere just as the first season did this year.

My Adventures with Superman  was developed by Sam Register ( Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham ), Jake Wyatt ( Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus ), Brendan Clogher ( Voltron: Legendary Defender ) and Josie Campbell ( Legion of Super-Heroes ).

Review: ‘My Adventures with Superman’ Is Warm, Wacky, and Wonderful

Share this:

My Adventures with Superman is a brand-new series from Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim. It marks the first Superman animated series since the long-running, critically-acclaimed Superman the Animated Series in 1996. Jack Quaid stars as Clark Kent/Superman, with Alice Lee as Lois Lane and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen. And for the first time in Superman history, nearly the entire writer/director team are women, including the great Josie Campbell ( She-Ra and the Princesses of Power , New Champion of Shazam! ).

My Adventures with Superman drops with a two-episode premiere on July 6, and will release weekly for the rest of the ten-episode season. Despite being on Adult Swim, this series has no “adult” content and is perfectly suitable for both children and adults.

I had the privilege to preview the first seven episodes and I was absolutely blown away. The show is so good that My Adventures has reinvigorated not only my interest in the character of Superman, but also the wonderful world around him and his long history of adaptations. So with just ten days before the premiere, let’s see what makes My Adventures with Superman  so special!

A fun, weird character in a fun, weird world

My Adventures with Superman is sensational . This is heaven for Superman nerds. It’s almost everything I expected from James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy , but here and now . My Adventures  is the classic Superman adaptation we’ve been waiting for.

The show is wickedly funny, romantic, and action-packed, giving it instant universal appeal. It is so purely joyful that I simply can’t watch it without smiling. And for Superman fans specifically, My Adventures with Superman is the ultimate “World of Superman” adaptation. The series lovingly embraces the gleeful weirdness of the Silver Age within the context of a modernized, futuristic Metropolis.

In the comics, Superman is a fun, weird character with a fun, weird world around him. Yet historically, adaptations have shied away from some of the most bizarre elements of Superman canon, or tried to ground them in seriousness. Not this show. In My Adventures with Superman , Clark, Lois, and Jimmy get lost on wacky sci-fi adventures that get increasingly bigger and crazier as the season goes on.

My Adventures is the first Superman universe where the strangest elements from the comics could be authentically adapted beat-for-beat from the page. Anything could be possible here. This is the kind of universe where Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman could be adapted, and none of the extreme weirdness would feel out of place at all.

This is because My Adventures with Superman is easily one of the most unabashedly comicbooky Superman adaptations ever made. The show threads deep-cut references throughout the story, creating a love letter to the fans and to the characters’ histories. But the Easter eggs aren’t simply for fan service: The lore helps the adaptation feel honest to the history of Superman on screen and on the page, and informs the world of the story. My Adventures with Superman is as fun and weird as a true Superman adaptation should be.

What makes My Adventures with Superman special?

My Adventures with Superman updates the Superman mythos for the 21st century in a way that embraces the comics’ fun silliness, but without the darker veneer of more serious adaptations like Superman & Lois and Superman the Animated Series . But beyond the bizarreness, My Adventures with Superman also has one of the best Superman/Lois teams across multimedia.

It’s an exciting mirror of the other ongoing show, Superman & Lois . Both have excellent examples of Clark and Lois, but at very different points in their lives. Superman & Lois uses their long-established relationship to showcase Superman’s emotional depths through a serious, real-world lens and his role as a father. In contrast, My Adventures with Superman uses the early days of the relationship to explore the breadth of Superman’s crazy science fiction world as Clark and Lois bond through their adventures.

Superman the Animated Series is more comparable, but there still are a number of differences. Firstly, the approach of each show is a sharp contrast. Both The Animated Series and My Adventures delve into the weirdness of Superman’s comic canon. But where The Animated Series adapts the material with a sense of seriousness, My Adventures is proudly warm and cartoony. My Adventures with Superman embraces the potential of Superman’s eccentric adventures in a way that only the comics have ever really done.

Secondly, Superman the Animated Series quickly accelerates into the traditional Superman status quo. My Adventures brings an original spin to this by making Jimmy and Lois new hires just like Clark. With the trio as interns, the show becomes not only an origin story for Superman, but for his supporting cast as well. We follow Clark, Lois, and Jimmy as they develop into the classic team we’re familiar with, building trust and friendship along the way. Compared to the status quos of The Animated Series , My Adventures has a strong sense of forward movement as the season tells a powerful story about Clark’s journey to self-discovery and Lois’ relationship with him.

My Adventures with Superman Character designs Lois Lane

Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen in My Adventures with Superman

Even though the adventures of each episode rapidly flesh out the Superman mythos, the show remains focused on Clark Kent’s long-form origin story. Despite the modernized world around them, the central cast are classic to their core.

Clark, Lois, and Jimmy do actual investigative journalism in almost every episode. Clark and Lois are super cute together, and Jimmy is the smartest and most comic-accurate depiction we’ve ever seen on screen. Since they are so early in their careers, the show is able to go deeper into each character’s strengths, weaknesses, and emotional vulnerabilities.

Of all the Superman adaptations, the characters in My Adventures are among the most “animated”. My favorite element of the character designs are their giant expressive eyes and the blushing effects. The show delivers on its emotional potential in spades: I was nearly in tears with several scenes (especially with young Clark) and I was smiling like a lunatic during Lois and Clark’s most heartfelt moments.

This series is simply one of the most romantic Superman adaptations ever made. While Smallville and Superman & Lois also highlight Lois and Clark’s romantic relationship, carefully building that relationship is a primary storyline in My Adventures with Superman . It’s a real, true romance, and the animation helps their feelings come to life.

Another major reason for the show’s emotional effectiveness is the character portrayals. Instead of the stiff, stoic confidence of Superman the Animated Series , My Adventures’ Superman is a friendly local hero and Clark Kent is an awkward, expressive 20-year-old still figuring himself out. Jack Quaid uses the youth and vulnerability of Clark to capture the heart of Superman.

When Lois does their famous first interview, Superman doesn’t have the same self-assurance we see in Superman & Lois , Man of Steel , Superman the Animated Series , or even Superman the Movie . For the first time in any Superman adaptation, Clark is candidly embarrassed that he doesn’t know all the answers himself. That down-to-earth humility is what sets My Adventures with Superman  apart.

The new Lois Lane is like a mischievous imp with an addiction to dangerous ideas. True to the show’s title, My Adventures’ Lois is more involved in the Superman action than any other adaptation of the character. By giving her a meaningful role in each adventure, this series avoids the major “damsel in distress” problems that plagued the 90s animated series and other Superman media. Additionally, because Lois is still an intern, it’s refreshing to see her struggle to prove herself and earn her reputation. This gives the show so much potential to continue building her character in the future seasons.

But across the entire series, the greatest update is Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen. This is classic Jimmy, straight from the Jack Kirby era and before. All the strangest escapades from the Silver Age finally feel possible in this show, and Jimmy Olsen would be right in the middle of them!

And on top of his spirit, the show makes Jimmy a real character with major character moments. He has honest emotions and intelligence, and Sahid delivers one of the best performances in the whole show. I loved Aaron Ashmore  in Smallville , but My Adventures takes Jimmy Olsen to a whole new level. An absolute treat.

The music and animation of My Adventures

The visuals of My Adventures with Superman capture the cozy charm of Superman for All Seasons , adapted for an ADHD modern world. The animation features a bright color palette with bold characters on top of backgrounds which look hand-drawn with pencils and watercolors. Every frame is beautiful to look at and feels authentically hand-crafted. I especially love when the color palette changes in the darker middle episodes.

The music balances a range of action, fear, comedy, and romance. Dominic Lewis and Daniel Futcher craft a light, playful, inspiring orchestral score accented with heavy guitar. Their design recalls the classical work of John Williams and Gustav Holst , but with a modern touch of Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel .

Although the music powerfully controls the mood of each scene, the Superman theme isn’t as memorable as other iterations. This decision aligns with the show’s focus on the Clark’s emotional journey as a human, rather than his mighty status as Superman.

My Adventures with Superman

My Adventures with Superman : among the best of the best

After watching the show build over the first seven episodes, I am completely obsessed with My Adventures with Superman . It is so much more than the simple show advertised in the trailers. It is so much weirder and more ambitious than anyone thought it would be. It is the true world of classic comics Superman, brought to life more faithfully than ever before.

The villains are the weakest link of the show, but Superman has always had a weak rogues gallery. I also think the weekly release schedule might hurt it because the short episodes are all connected and the show gets bigger and better with each episode. So keep watching week to week!

I am so excited for this series because it is the classic, iconic, well-known beats of a Superman origin, brushed up with modern flair, strong characters, and radical ambition. In a run of excellent Superman adaptations in film and TV, My Adventures with Superman stands among the best of the best for its portrayal of the weird world of Superman and the dynamic partnership of Clark, Lois, and Jimmy. Warm, wacky, and wonderful, My Adventures with Superman is a welcome addition to the Superman canon.

My Adventures with Superman is the Superman origin story I didn't know I wanted

We've all seen Superman's origin before, but going back to basics makes the twists in My Adventures with Superman truly sing

My Adventures with Superman intro still

If you were to ask me if I wanted to watch another telling of Superman's origin story in any medium yesterday, I would have groaned in total exhaustion with one of fiction's most widely repeated narratives getting another go. But today I'm watching My Adventures with Superman, Adult Swim and Max's new anime-style Superman cartoon, and damned if I'm not completely enchanted and delighted by its approach to the story of Clark Kent becoming Superman.

From the opening scene of the first episode, 'Adventures of a Normal Man, Part One,' My Adventures with Superman takes an emotional approach to Clark Kent's journey to discovering his powers and history, with enough twists on his classic origin to carry viewers who know the story through.

The story is also heavily steeped in the DC Universe, from the show's first villain Livewire (who originally debuted in the '90s Superman: The Animated series before coming to comics ), to the larger storyline that's being set up involving Kryptonian technology and several DC characters viewers are likely to recognize.

In its first two episodes, My Adventures with Superman focuses on easing readers into a whole new vision of the DC Universe with some different relationships and previously untold storylines by wrapping the whole thing in a version of Clark Kent's origin as Superman that has just enough of the familiar to get away with straying farther and farther from the traditional story that's been told time and again as the episodes go on.

But what really makes My Adventures with Superman work is its cast and its sense of humor, from its core trio of moral center Clark Kent, chaos goblin Lois Lane, and cryptid conspiracist Jimmy Olsen, whose chemistry establishes a perfect base for revisiting the start of Superman's career in a new way.

Here's the entire first episode, courtesy of the official Adult Swim YouTube channel:

If there's a comic to compare My Adventures with Superman with, it's undoubtedly Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu's Superman: Birthright, with its focus on Clark Kent coming to terms with his identity and discovering what it means to be Superman. But in the show, it's all filtered through a satisfyingly shonen and sentai-inspired lens - like Warner Bros. applying lessons learned from My Hero Academia in real time.

My Adventures With Superman Debuts a Badass Eye Patch-Wearing Jor-El

In the thrilling series, My Adventures With Superman, an extraordinary turn of events unfolds when Clark Kent finds himself discovering his true heritage while saving his beloved adoptive parents, Ma and Pa Kent.

my journey with superman

The captivating storyline delves into uncharted territory as viewers are introduced to a distinct portrayal of Jor-El, Clark's biological father, defying conventional expectations.

In an exclusive video, Ma and Pa Kent dramatically unveil a colossal spacecraft, shedding light on Clark's mysterious arrival on Earth. As the young boy undergoes a scanning process, an enigmatic program activates, summoning a holographic projection that speaks in an alien tongue. Though Clark struggles to comprehend the message, he discerns the hologram introducing himself as Jor-El, the Kryptonian father of Superman. Meanwhile, the massive structure starts to come alive, endangering the lives of Ma and Pa Kent, who find themselves perilously entangled in its intricate mechanisms, teetering on the precipice of a fatal plunge. Swift as a speeding bullet, Clark dons his iconic cape, soaring through the air to save his cherished parents from a catastrophic fate.

Described as a charming romantic comedy/coming-of-age tale inspired by Christopher Reeve's portrayal, My Adventures With Superman follows the journey of Clark Kent as he grapples with his dual identity while pursuing a career as a journalist in the bustling city of Metropolis. As if the challenges of this profession weren't daunting enough, Clark finds himself endeavoring to win the heart of Lois Lane, who is fated to become his one true love. "Set within the bustling environment of the Daily Planet, our characters navigate the relatable experiences and obstacles that arise during their early twenties," shared Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults, and Classics. "However, this series encompasses more than just a superhero narrative; it is a captivating love story. In our adaptation, Clark is discovering his extraordinary abilities, making it a coming-of-age journey for all of them."

Jack Quaid Is Ready for His Cape

The highly-anticipated animated series features the talents of Jack Quaid as Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Jeannie Tirado as Lana Lang. While Quaid brings a wealth of experience in animated series (such as Star Trek: Lower Decks) and the realm of superheroes (seen in The Boys), tackling the role of Superman proved to be a rewarding challenge for him—one he eagerly embraced. "It's definitely a challenge, but more than that, I view it as an incredible opportunity," expressed Quaid. "Being able to explore diverse universes like Star Trek, Superman, and this uniquely twisted world where superheroes exist and are engineered from birth to become superhuman—it's mind-blowing."

Mark your calendars for the premiere of My Adventures With Superman on Adult Swim, set to delight audiences starting July 6.

Looking to the summer, DC Comics has revealed details on My Adventures with Superman #1 , a new comic book title written by My Adventure with Superman series producer Josie Campbell and drawn by artist Pablo M. Collar. The story picks up from season 1's finale and serves as a bridge to My Adventures with Superman's anticipated next season .

My Adventures with Superman Returns in Comic Book Form

My Adventures with Superman is an animated series that premiered in 2023 and aired on Adult Swim. The series became a fan-favorite among viewers for its lighthearted, comedic moments, and its positive portrayal of Superman as he slowly becomes the hero that fans know and love. A second season was ordered alongside the first, but there's been no news on its expected release date.

The My Adventures with Superman comic isn't the first time DC Comics has published a title that ties into an adaptation. Young Justice's Greg Weisman helped pen a tie-in ongoing title that was canon to the animated series. DC Comics also published Earth-Prime, a miniseries that told new stories set in the continuity of CW's Arrowverse. While fans wait patiently to discover what's next for Clark and his friends, this series will go a long way to helping viewers survive the dry spell by giving them new content directly from My Adventure with Superman's producer .

This comic is coming from someone who helped develop the show and is firmly set in between seasons to give fans everything they need to know before the next season starts. Who knows what adventures Superman and his pals will get up to or how it will impact the next season? Indira Varma of ‘Game of Thrones’ is scheming once more as Lady Macbeth

The actress strives to play the role as the scottish king’s equal in the shakespeare theatre company staging opposite ralph fiennes.

my journey with superman

As Indira Varma can attest, inhabiting Lady Macbeth eight times a week — in a production spanning four cities and five months, no less — is a gratifying but taxing affair. For instance: After pulling a muscle onstage, the actress had to go straight into physical therapy following a recent video interview from her London dressing room, depriving her of a chance to relay a treasured theatrical anecdote.

Never one to leave a tale untold, the cheerfully loquacious Varma sent a voice memo the next day. She started the recording by recalling a performance of “Macbeth” in Liverpool that was briefly, charmingly interrupted by a butterfly fluttering between her and co-star Ralph Fiennes. A few days later, Varma recounted, she saw that same butterfly onstage, reached toward the creature and marveled as it crawled onto her hand for Lady Macbeth’s “unsex me here” speech. Later that night, when Ben Turner’s Macduff learned of his family’s murder, the butterfly flew back onstage and landed on the actor’s shoulder.

“Of course, magical things like that do happen on camera,” says Varma, 50, best known for such television series as “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Game of Thrones.” “But when it happens live, it does feel like the spirits that we talk about in the play are present.”

Ever entranced by theater’s ephemeralness, Varma has never gone long without circling back to the stage. After starring in “Macbeth” in Liverpool, Edinburgh and London alongside Fiennes, the Olivier Award winner has arrived in D.C. with the rest of the cast for the production’s final leg, which is being mounted by Shakespeare Theatre Company at the former Black Entertainment Television studios in Brentwood.

Director Simon Godwin, Fiennes and Varma laid the groundwork for “Macbeth” when they collaborated on a 2015 production of “Man and Superman” at London’s National Theatre. As Godwin and Fiennes subsequently discussed tackling the Scottish play, the decision to crown Varma as Lady Macbeth was an easy one. Over the past four years, Godwin says, Fiennes and Varma have been critical creative partners as he crafted his vision for the play, staged in nontraditional spaces and set among a modern war zone’s rubble.

“It wasn’t a discussion between Ralph and I,” Godwin says. “It was just, ‘Let’s do this with Indira.’ She was pretty fundamental to the conception of ‘Macbeth,’ really, from the beginning. And she was such a fellow traveler in revivifying the language of the past and putting it in the present.”

Varma credits her lingual acuity to her upbringing, as the daughter of a Swiss mother and Indian father in the southwestern English town of Bath. Although English was her parents’ shared language, neither spoke it as their native tongue. “They were communicating in quite an expressive way,” Varma recalls. “I feel like that was the beginning of my need to know how to communicate.”

While Varma’s mother and father were artists — a graphic designer and illustrator, respectively — they were more inclined to take her to concerts, dance performances and physical theater productions than traditionally staged plays. Thus, Varma initially dreamed of training as a mime over becoming an actor.

“That was the universal language,” she says. “You didn’t need words. So it’s ironic that I’m now doing Shakespeare.”

As Varma grew older, she got in the habit of lining up for 1-pound tickets at the Theatre Royal Bath, developed a fondness for the classics and studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. But after her breakout role in the 1996 film “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love,” Varma found she was being typecast on-screen as the “slightly exotic young Indian girl.” So she shifted her focus to theater and got steady work delivering the words of William Shakespeare, Harold Pinter, Anton Chekhov and Noël Coward. Once she made a name for herself in the theater community, better on-screen roles — in series such as “Rome,” “Torchwood” and “Luther” — came her way.

When Varma played the charmingly calculated Ann Whitefield in George Bernard Shaw’s “Man and Superman” nearly a decade ago, she endeavored to give the character an impact equal to that of Fiennes’s free-spirited Jack Tanner, despite having significantly fewer lines. In “Macbeth,” a similar dynamic played out: Varma decided to deliver much of her dialogue to the audience — an unconventional choice for Lady Macbeth — so she can rival the connection Fiennes forges with theatergoers over Macbeth’s many soliloquies.

“Indira has really carved out every bit of that journey with real clarity and real humanity so that Lady Macbeth, who can sometimes feel sidelined in Shakespeare’s play, really remains at the center of our emotional experience,” Godwin says. “She does that in a way that never feels overbearing but is eternally present and always watchable and always precise.”

Without knowing it, Varma has been working toward Lady Macbeth’s arc of power-grabbing betrayal, Machiavellian maneuvering and deep-seated regret. Her “Game of Thrones” character — Ellaria Sand, the paramour to Pedro Pascal’s Oberyn Martell — proved to be a ruthless schemer in her own right. In “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Varma played a double agent who undermines the tyrannical empire she once supported.

So what makes Varma so adept at playing duality?

“I have mixed heritage, so I’m already born a mixed-up person with two very different cultures,” Varma responds. “I think it’s called code switching — it’s in my DNA. So it’s a very easy thing for me to do because it’s part of me. It’s very useful in my line of work.”

Varma can also be seen on-screen as the title character in the dark comedy “The Trouble With Jessica,” which hit U.K. theaters last week. And she can be heard as the Bride of Frankenstein in the upcoming DC Comics animated series “Creature Commandos.”

But Varma tends to feel the most fulfilled in that cherished, high-stakes space onstage, where the margin for error is thin and serendipity creates drama that can’t be replicated. In fact, she already has her next theatrical project lined up: a Rami Malek-starring production of “Oedipus” that begins performances at London’s Old Vic in January.

“I always come back to theater,” Varma says. “I think the more you work, and the more successful or known you become, the more tempting it is to not disappoint people and to stop taking risks. And I think the importance of risk taking is everything, because to fail is the only way to make discoveries.”

Here's how much money I made as a software engineer at Meta, Apple, and Oracle

  • Sandeep Rao is a software engineer who has worked at Meta, Apple, and Oracle.
  • When he first started his career as a new graduate, his compensation was only $15,000.
  • He explains how, thanks to high performance and negotiation skills, he now makes nearly $700,000.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sandeep Rao, a 32-year-old software engineer based in San Jose, California. Business Insider has verified his income with documentation. This essay has been edited for length and clarity.

My salary journey in Big Tech has seen my total compensation — which includes base salary, bonuses, and stocks — increase from $15,000 in 2012 to $685,000 in 2024.

I'm a staff software engineer and have worked at three different tech companies, moving from Oracle to Apple to Meta. Over my career, I've led the development of successful software apps and features from scratch that are used every day by millions of people across the world.

While I have made my career moves primarily based on which areas of software engineering I'd get to work on, compensation is also important to me, so I've been strategic and negotiated for higher salaries with each move.

Tech companies use tools like additional equity to retain high-performing employees. In my experience, if you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.

I took a low-paying job to get my foot in the door

While I got my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering , I realized midway through college that software engineering was my passion and pivoted to pursue a career in software instead.

My first job was as a software developer at Oracle in India. While Oracle isn't generally low-paying in the tech industry, my salary of 850,000 rupees, or $15,000, was low compared to what new grads were making at that time in competing Big Tech companies like Microsoft or Amazon because it was a "take it or leave it" new grad offer.

The work was unappealing to me because it didn't align with my career interests — I didn't want to continue building expertise in that specific area of software engineering — but I took it to get my foot in the door of a Big Tech company and build credibility.

I knew I eventually wanted to end up where all the action is — Silicon Valley . I worked at Oracle from 2012 to 2014, and during this time, I applied to graduate schools in the US because I felt a formal computer science degree would help me compete with the talented people in the Valley.

I got accepted into a graduate program in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I left behind my family and friends in India and moved to the US with nothing but a suitcase and $65,000 in student debt.

Grad school was hard, but the doors it opened for me made the struggle worth it.

I was ecstatic to get a job at Apple

I finished grad school and got a job as a software engineer at Apple in Cupertino, California, where my base salary was $115,000.

I was ecstatic to work at one of the best companies in the world and felt my dreams were coming true. But I realized I wanted to work on more direct user-facing applications rather than on technology that ran under the hood.

Initially, I considered looking for new opportunities within Apple, but between high taxes, the high cost of living, and my student loans, I felt more compelled to switch companies, given that I'd likely receive a significant salary bump .

I had gotten a very small cost-of-living raise on my base salary at Apple, but it wasn't significant; not getting a bigger raise wasn't a big motivator in my decision to change companies, but it certainly made my choice easier.

My negotiation skills helped me get a 10% salary increase

At the end of 2017, I moved to Meta (then Facebook) in Menlo Park, California. I wanted to experience the culture of younger internet-based companies whose products are used by billions of people.

When I received my offer, I did my research to get a clear understanding of what my market value was and what salary I wanted to land on. I also learned what parts of my total compensation are negotiable, such as stocks and the sign-on bonus, and what is non-negotiable, like base salary and annual bonuses.

I was prepared to negotiate and walked away with an offer of $140,000, which was 10% more than their original offer.

In 2021, I landed a large-scale project at Meta that added a lot of value to the Messenger app and worked with several cross-functional teams across engineering, design, data science, and legal.

My accomplishments, such as this one, and high performance at work got me the promotions, visibility, and leverage to negotiate for higher pay and a successful salary journey.

Every year between 2018 to 2023, my base salary increased — as did my total compensation — through a combination of performance-based yearly stock refreshers, additional boosts from promotions, and stock market appreciation.

Compensation in a tech career usually gets more and more equity-heavy than salary-heavy, so base salaries don't increase as quickly as equity, but my salary and total annual compensation steadily rose:

Grad School

2014-2016: $0 total compensation

Student loan debt: $65,000

2018: $230,000 total compensation

2020: $350,000 total compensation (promotion)

2021: $510,000 total compensation

2022: $375,000 total compensation (promotion, but total compensation dropped due to stock price drop)

2023: $545,000 total compensation

In 2024, I'm projected to make $685,000 through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock.

Five strategies for increasing my compensation package

Over the years, I learned five salary strategies that helped me grow my salary and overall compensation:

1. Always do your homework about market rates for your role, level, and location — especially when you switch jobs.

Switching jobs is a good way to increase your income.

Even if money may not be the primary motivator for a job switch, I always make sure to be conscious and strategic about my compensation by doing salary research to avoid leaving any money on the table.

When I started doing salary research during my switch to Meta, I found out my market value was much higher than what I was making at Apple at that time. This helped me start my negotiations with Meta at the market rate rather than the salary I was making.

I used Levels.fyi , Blind , and Glassdoor to find salary information and clearly understand my market value. Keep yourself updated on these benchmarks even if you don't plan on a job change anytime soon, so you know you're on par with the market, and any salary difference is offset by other factors such as better work-life balance.

2. Never let your bad salary "baggage" carry over to your new job.

If your salary isn't up to market standards right now, don't let it affect your pay at the next job. Otherwise, it'll lead to a cycle where you'll be underpaid for the rest of your career.

Employers and recruiters could use your salary history to give you only a modest raise, while your actual market value could easily be double or triple your most recent salary.

In California, labor laws make it illegal for employers to ask you about your current salary and salary history. You're also allowed to ask potential employers for the pay range for the position you're applying for.

If your state has similar protections, just being aware of this law can help you make any corrections to your pay during negotiations. This helped me start offer negotiations from my market value instead of my current pay.

3. Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith to make that 10x impact on your career.

That could involve switching from a non-tech job to a tech job or taking a short-term hit for long-term gain. For example, I picked Oracle for my first job despite the low pay and unappealing work so I could build credibility to get into a Tier 1 grad school.

I also took a loan of about $65,000 to pay for Carnegie Mellon, even though I could have chosen to go to a cheaper public university.

Deciding to work at Oracle and attend Carnegie Mellon cost me a few years and a lot of debt, but doing so opened doors unlike anything else, and I haven't looked back ever since.

4. Negotiate to keep your base salary from falling behind

It's inevitable for your salary to fall behind as you stay longer at a company, especially in tech due to restricted stock unit (RSU) "cliffs."

Most RSU packages offered to new employees in the tech industry have a two- to four-year vesting period. Unless the employer offers a significant pay bump along the way, total compensation usually takes a drop after this vesting period. Many companies also offer annual performance-based stock refreshers to lower this salary gap, but they're usually not as large as the initial grant.

If you love working at your company and feel forced to move just to get a raise, you can ask your senior leadership to make a "correction." After all, it's much more expensive and time-consuming for employers to hire new people than to retain good employees.

Most Big Tech companies have employee retention programs like additional or discretionary equity. Additional equity programs are mainly used to retain high-performing employees, so they're usually highly selective.

This is how I was able to keep my compensation at or above market level despite spending six years at Meta. When I was reaching the end of my vesting period in my fourth year, I had a conversation with my senior leadership to see if there was any room for a pay correction so I could go back to focusing on my work 100% without worrying about salary.

Being prepared with my predicted compensation drop and market data greatly helped me build a cogent narrative going in. If you're consistently a top performer at your organization, it's certainly possible to keep your pay at or above market level and have a rewarding career within your company.

5. Don't assume people will reward your work or anticipate your needs — ask.

Always ask for what you want , whether it's a raise or that interesting project that just came in. The worst that will happen is you'll get a "no." If you don't ask, nobody will know, or even worse, people may assume that you're happy with what you have and move on.

I used this strategy when I heard of a new company initiative and asked to be a founding engineer because I was looking to create more impact in my role. Despite the high risk and ambiguity involved, I successfully delivered on the projects, which eventually led to a promotion. None of this would've been possible if I hadn't asked.

At the end of the day, you're your biggest advocate when it comes to your salary and career journey. There's no substitute for hard work, but being strategic about how you achieve your goals can go a long way. Sometimes, you have to take big risks and step out of your comfort zone to get that high-paying dream job.
