1. a 3 hr Guided tour of Roman Forum then colosseum https://mptour.it/colosseo-e-foro-romano-tour-guidato/ 69EURO pp and

2. Vatican Garden minibus and skip-the-line Vatican Museums entry https://mptour.it/musei-vaticani-e-cappella-sistina/ 43EURO pp

There is also a guided Vatican tour available for 73 EURO pp which seems much better value as long as we could then wander around the Gardens on our own. Is that allowed? Do you recommend being Guided through the Vatican museums?

We only have three full days in Rome so hoping to get the most out of the time. Day 3 would be walking the streets and historic centre and sites on foot.

Your recommendations and advise is much appreciated.

Never heard of MP Tours.

If you want a general admission ticket or a guided tour of the Vatican Museums, try and go through the official Vatican Museums website: https://tickets.museivaticani.va/home/calendar/visit/Biglietti-Musei

However, not sure when you are going, if you have left it to last minute, you may not be able to find tickets easily.

The tour of the Colosseum / Roman Forum looks OK -- I really do recommend guided tours of the Roman Forum because it is rather hard to understand and appreciate without a good guide. I can't tell how long that part of the tour is, however, from the website.

I would just book tours or entry tickets through the official websites and not bother with a third party vendor. It sounds like MP tours is just booking tours at the Vatican and colosseum then upselling them to you. That's fine, if that's what you want to do but be aware that a lot of tour companies have been struggling to get the ticket/tour slots they need and have been cancelling at the last minute, leaving their customers out in the cold.

You cannot wander about the Vatican gardens on your own - you are escorted by a Vatican guide even on the walking tours. I would also agree with SSA, that the gardens are not impressive.

There is no need to book one of the Vatican tours with a third party - almost certainly (absolutely definitely for the garden tour) they are selling one of the official Vatican tours with a hefty mark-up. Buying on the official website also means you definitely have a ticket - third party operators may sell tickets they don't have in the hope they can get them later. If they can't, they will cancel at the last minute, leaving you with few alternatives and it may be difficult to get a refund, with them trying to palm you off with tickets on another day you can't make or another destination.

Thank you for the insight into the Gardens and resellers. The dates we are looking at for Vatican, July 4&5, are sold out on the official website for GA which is why I was looking to the resellers, assuming they had pre-purchased their tix.

There is also a private guided tour for about 300EUR which unfortunately I can’t afford.

As it’s peak season ideally I want to beat the crowds if there is such a thing but can’t see an early morning availability on the official website.

Reseller- What a Life Tours has an early morning 8am “available”. Does anyone have experience of this one?

Will definately book a Colosseum & Roman Forum tour on their official website 30 days out.

I see some "Lunch at the Museums" tickets available for July 4 and 5 ... no guided tour, just general admission and lunch. This may be your cheapest option from the official website.

As for the tours of the Roman Forum available form the official Colosseum website, here's a recent thread: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187791-i22-k14345411-There_is_now_a_guided_tour_of_the_Forum-Rome_Lazio.html

You're probably done with the tour now but I would NOT recommend MP Tours for anything! I bought a guided tour to Forum, Palatine and the Colesseum but I only got entry tickets for 4 times the price. No one is available to talk to/ get info from. We were stuck with the entry tickets. Had to walk to get the kids tickets, tour the Forum on our own which makes NO sense - it just looks like ruins without any context of what is what. The Colesseum was a little better cause there is signage and a small museum but imagine expecting to see something with a guide and not getting one! WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, NOT RECOMMENDED.

Privileged Entrance Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

Skip the line at the colosseum, plus arch of titus, temple of julius caesar, and more.

Looking for the perfect way to see the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill in just a few hours? With a super-knowledgeable local guide, you’ll breeze past the crowds to visit the most important sites in ancient Rome. Gaze in awe at the mighty Colosseum and hear stories of the gruesome battles that took place here, then admire the ruins where the true power of the Roman Empire once lay. It’s the ideal way to see the iconic highlights of ancient Rome!

Thumbnail

  • 1st and 2nd tiers of the Colosseum
  • Roman Forum
  • Arch of Constantine
  • Arch of Titus
  • Temple of Romulus
  • Temple of Julius Caesar
  • Palatine Hill
  • Senate House
  • Stadium of Domitian

After meeting your expert Roman guide at the Colosseo metro stop, you'll skip the line to explore this ancient arena, including the first and second tiers where Rome's rich and famous would watch the bloody battles below. After your guided Colosseum tour your guide will help you avoid the lines at the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, where they'll bring the ruins to life with stories of the powerful people that once controlled the Roman Empire from these sites.

Colosseum and Ancient Rome Tour Description

Your 3-hour walking tour includes:

Skip-the-line Colosseum tickets

Skip-the-line Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tickets

Guided tours of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill

An engaging, English-speaking local guide

A maximum group size of 25

Please note that depending on the assigned entry time for the Colosseum, your tour might enter the Roman Forum first and end in the Colosseum.

Skip-the-Line Colosseum Tour

Breeze past the crowds and access the special entrance for small group tours at the Colosseum. As you enter this ancient Roman structure, your passionate local guide will take you back in time with stories of the gruesome fights and epic spectacles that once happened here. You’ll explore the first and second tiers of the Colosseum—areas that were originally reserved only for Rome’s most elite classes.

Learn how the Colosseum was built and the history of the bloody battles that defined ancient Roman history. You’ll only spend an hour inside of the Colosseum, which is perfect for those who want to cover the most ground in less time.

This product includes an entry ticket to the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill, for which our cost is 18 Euro per person.

Guided Tour of Palatine Hill

Next, your guide will take you to the site where Romulus is said to have founded the city in 753 B.C. This area is comprised of opulent ancient palaces that are still characterized by their detailed artifacts and mosaics. These palaces weren’t just the homes of Rome’s most elite, they were enormous treasure troves with every possible luxury inside. In fact, the Palace of Domitian even had an amphitheater inside of it, large enough to host chariot races! Here, you'll also see a piece of an ancient Roman aqueduct.

Ancient Roman Forum

Finally, you'll visit what we like to call downtown ancient Rome. Ever watch a movie that takes place in ancient Rome, and you see people walking around a busy marketplace? That’s the Forum. This ancient site is where all of the action happened. From senate meetings to poetry performances and political protests, the Roman Forum really was the cultural hub of ancient Rome. Your guide will give you an insight into what life was like here, as you stroll around admiring historic structures including the Arch of Titus and the Temple of Julius Caesar.

The 7 best rome colosseum tours with skip-the-line access.

Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.

The Best Rome Colosseum Tours

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Courtesy of ArcheoRunning

As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.

A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.

Crown Tours: Skip the line Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour

Price: From $57 for adults

Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.

Selected by GetYourGuide as a Certified Experience, this group tour starts at the Colosseum, then takes you to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.

Local tip: This tour is offered over a variety of time slots every day. Pick one of the earlier time slots to make sure you'll finish up by lunchtime.

Through Eternity Tours: Ultimate Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

House of the Vestal Virgins at the Roman Forum.

Price: From $85 for adults

Duration: 3 hours

Standout perk: This tour includes the Palatine Hill, which some tours skip.

Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable guides for their passion about ancient history and keeping the tour moving while explaining everything in detail. This tour starts at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week and finishes up around lunchtime. In addition to the Colosseum, highlights include the Via Sacra and the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum, as well as the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.

Groups are limited to 16 people; if there are six or more people taking the tour, the guide gives out headsets so everyone can hear. Participants are asked to meet 10 minutes before the start time in front of Cafe/Restaurant Angelino ai Fori on Largo Corrado Ricci. The tour is stroller-accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, especially on hot days.

Through Eternity Tours offers a variety of group and private tours of Rome and other destinations, including Florence , Naples and Pompeii.

Local tip: Book a table at the nearby Taverna dei Fori Imperiali to enjoy a leisurely lunch after the tour.

The Moon Over the Colosseum Tour

Night scene aerial of the Rome Colosseum from the Vittorio Emanuele II viewpoint.

Price: From $27

Duration: 1 hour

Standout perk: You get after-hours access to the Colosseum and hypogeum.

This seasonal tour offers a completely different perspective on the Colosseum, when it's illuminated and the last of the visitors have left for the day. The official night tour offered by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo focuses on the underground level, where the guide shows participants where the animals were caged and how they were lifted up onto the stage on proto-elevators made of wooden platforms. The tour group then ascends the stairs and sees a multimedia installation depicting Jerusalem before passing through the service gallery and ending on the arena level. The tour offers a rare opportunity to see the Colosseum without the crowds, but the tradeoff is that photos may not come out as well at night.

Participants on the tour arrive at the Valadier Gate, meet the guide and go through security. This tour does not include the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill. The tour hours change by season, and dates for the spring 2024 season have not been released yet as of the time of publication.

Local tip: There are a bunch of companies offering this tour for triple the price of the official tour, but the official tour is great.

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access

Price: From $151 for adults

Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.

Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants note that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.

Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.

Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.

ArcheoRunning: The Unveiled Colosseum Running Tour (or Walking Tour)

Rome Colosseum views from an ArcheoRunning tour.

Price: $218 for private groups of up to 6 people + the cost of tickets

Standout perk: You get access to the third level and attic.

This private tour is led by Isabella Calidonna, a licensed tour guide and certified personal trainer. Through her company ArcheoRunning, she leads visitors on running and walking tours of Rome early in the morning to see the city without the crowds. For this tour, Calidonna meets guests at their hotel at 7:30 a.m. and leads them on a running tour through the Eternal City's most beautiful squares before bringing them to the Colosseum, where they have the chance to visit the third level and the attic – areas normally closed to the public – as well as the lower levels of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. This tour must be booked at least a month in advance in order to confirm 8:30 a.m. access to the Colosseum.

AR Experience, an offshoot of ArcheoRunning, also offers tours of the underground at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., as well as more relaxed three-hour tours that are also suitable for children and people with mobility problems.

Local tip: You can't run inside the Colosseum, but running around it is a great way to take it in while getting some exercise.

Price: From $520 for two people

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Standout perk: See these ancient sites with an archaeologist who dug at the Roman Forum.

For a deeper understanding (no pun intended) of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can buy. She studied archaeology and has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other sites, so she's just the person to guide you if you want to get beyond the surface level. Her private tours range from just under three hours for a skip-the-line Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour to the full-day "See Rome in One Day" tour, which also includes a guided visit of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum when you book.

Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.

Local tip: If you want to see another incredible archaeological park, let Bove take you to Ostia Antica, less than an hour from Rome.

1. a 3 hr Guided tour of Roman Forum then colosseum https://mptour.it/colosseo-e-foro-romano-tour-guidato/ 69EURO pp and

Where is the Colosseum located?

The address of the Colosseum is Piazza del Colosseo, 1, in Rome, Italy . For those travelling by car, the Colosseum’s GPS coordinates are 41.8902° N, 12.4922° E . If you’re in Rome and want to find out how to go to the Colosseum use the following Google Map to find the best route from your current location.

How to get to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is very well serviced by Rome’s extensive public transport network. It can be reached by subway, multiple bus lines, and by tram. Below is a list of all public transport options to go to the Colosseum from practically anywhere in Rome.

  • Metro B line, get off at the Colosseum metro stop.
  • Metro A line, get off at Manzoni stop, then switch to the number 3 tram line going south.
  • Bus lines 60, 75, 85, 87, 271, 571, 175, 186, 810, 850, C3, and 117.
  • Tramway line 3.

If you don’t want to take public transport you can also take a taxi, just make sure that it is an official, licensed cab.

You’ll recognize them because they have the “TAXI” sign on the roof of the vehicle, are all white, and they have the Commune di Roma logo on the side.

Also make sure your cab has a meter, and that the driver turns it on when you get in, otherwise you could end up paying much more than you should.

Things to see near the Colosseum

The Colosseum is surrounded by other beautiful and famous monuments that are well worth viewing . The most important ones are:

  • The Arch of Constantine, a triumphalist arch dedicated to the Emperor of the same name. It sits right next to the Colosseum and doesn’t require a ticket.
  • The Domus Aurea , the remains of the grand palace emperor Nero built himself in 68 AD. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour (affiliate link if this is available?)
  • The Roman Circus, aka the Circus Maximus , the ground-level remains of an ancient chariot racing stadium. It is said that it could seat 150,000 spectators during the Empire’s heyday. It is best viewed from the Palatine Hill.
  • The Palatine Hill, which houses the archeological remains of many ancient Roman palaces and temples and offers a great view of the surrounding area. You can visit it with the same ticket as the Colosseum.
  • The Roman Forum, or Foro Romano , which used to be the center of Rome itself. A plaza where trade, politics, parades, and entertainment were conducted. You can visit and view its many archaeological remains with the same ticket as the Colosseum.

Tips and things you should know for your visit

Below are some tips and other important information you should take into account when visiting the Colosseum.

Like all major tourist attractions, the Colosseum’s security is quite stringent to keep visitors safe. Visitors are not allowed to enter the monument with large bags, suitcases, or backpacks.

If you are carrying your travel luggage you will be denied entry. Small and medium-sized bags are ok, but they will be screened by security personnel and go through a metal detector.

Italian military police, the Carabinieri, patrolling on horseback near the Colosseum

Skipping the line

If you have pre-booked your tickets you will get to skip the ticket line , but will still have to wait to go through security. Depending on the day and the time of year security can take anywhere from 10 minutes to over 60 minutes. Because of this, it is recommended you budget extra time for your visit.

A good way to avoid this problem altogether is to go early in the morning. The Colosseum opens to visitors at 8.30 am. If you arrive early you will spend much less time waiting and you will also avoid the intense heat of the Roman summer. Another way to skip the lines is to join a guided tour, find out more on our tours of the Colosseum page (link).

Is the Colosseum accessible for disabled people?

Yes, the Colosseum is accessible to disabled people. Its main entrance has no stairs, the inside is mostly flat save a few areas because of the old cobblestones, and there is an elevator that takes visitors to the upper floor.

Parking near the Colosseum

Regarding parking near the Colosseum — the most important advice for any visitor thinking of driving in Rome is don’t do it . Driving and finding parking spaces in the center of the city is very difficult if you don’t know your way around.

You’ll save money, time, and stress if you stick to public transport. Pickpockets can be a thing, but if you’re careful and mindful of your belongings you won’t have a problem.

Does the Colosseum have a dress code?

The Colosseum doesn’t have a dress code, but in exploring it you’ll be climbing a lot of stairs so make sure to wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes. The same can be said of Rome as a whole. Shorts, leggings, hoodies… all are fine.

If you explore the surrounding area you may also spend some time in the sun, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen.

Is the Colosseum child friendly?

Yes, but you’ll need to do a little extra planning. If you’re visiting during the hottest months of the year go early in the morning to escape the heat. Joining a guided tour can also help with dodging the lines to minimize waiting time. Beyond that, it depends on your child. If he/she is interested in ancient archaeological ruins and in hearing stories about brave Roman gladiators that fought in the arena the Colosseum can be quite an enjoyable experience.

What is the best way to see the Colosseum?

The best time to visit the Colosseum is early in the morning before large crowds form, and the best days are during the week, as it will usually be less crowded than on the weekends. However, if you’re willing to spend a little more, a night time tour (link) is probably the most interesting way to visit. Keep in mind that the night tour does not include a combined ticket for the Roman Forum and the palatine hill as a normal Colosseum ticket would, so if you want to see those monuments too you’ll have to visit them separately.

Tory MP William Wragg resigns whip after giving colleagues’ phone numbers to Grindr scammer

author image

Tory MP William Wragg standing in Parliament. He is wearing a black suit and holding a newspaper.

A Tory MP has spoken of his fear after being contacted by a suspected scammer on Grindr.

William Wragg, MP for Hazel Grove, has quit positions in two committees and relinquished the Conservative whip after it emerged he had given out colleagues’ phone numbers.

He said he had been blackmailed into sharing personal information in the honeypot scam .

Mr Wragg said that he had been scared into handing over the information because they ‘had compromising things on me’.

He said that he was pressured into sharing personal phone numbers of other MPs, Commons staff and a political journalist.

The unknown scammer is said to have used the aliases ‘Charlie’ and ‘Abi’ while sending flirtatious messages to coax MPs into sending explicit pictures.

Mr Wragg was commended for his bravery in going public about the scam, with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt praising his decision as ‘courageous and fulsome’.

But pressure has mounted in recent days amid concerns over parliamentary security, with critics from across the political divide questioning Mr Wragg’s behaviour.

Speaking to The Times , Mr Wragg previously said: ‘They had compromising things on me. They wouldn’t leave me alone. They would ask for people.

‘I gave them some numbers, not all of them. I told him to stop. He’s manipulated me and now I’ve hurt other people.

‘I got chatting to a guy on an app and we exchanged pictures. We were meant to meet up for drinks, but then didn’t. Then he started asking for numbers of people.

‘I was worried because he had stuff on me. He gave me a WhatsApp number, which doesn’t work now.

‘I’ve hurt people by being weak. I was scared. I’m mortified. I’m so sorry that my weakness has caused other people hurt.’

Scotland Yard is investigating the scam that involved at least 12 men in political circles who received unsolicited messages.

A spokesperson for the Conservative Whips’ Office said: ‘Following Will Wragg’s decision to step back from his roles on the Public Accounts and 1922 committees, he has also notified the Chief Whip that he is voluntarily relinquishing the Conservative Whip.’

Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden said Mr Wragg had been ‘right’ to resign the whip, but declined to comment further when asked by Sky News whether he had been pressured into that decision.

Labour’s national campaign co-ordinator Pat McFadden said the fact Mr Wragg had not been stripped of the whip was ‘another indictment of Rishi Sunak’s weakness’.

He said: ‘His MPs were left yet again being sent out to defend a position that has collapsed.

‘Rishi Sunak puts party management first every time – and he can’t even do that properly. It is no way to run a country.’
