Jedi Survivor New Journey + Everything you should know

This guide will cover everything that you get by starting a New Journey+ in Star Wars Jedi Survivor: what items and upgrades you get to keep and what new items you gain!

What is New Journey + and how to unlock it

Finishing a Star Wars game always brings a small sense of fulfillment. Whether because of its incredible story or the challenging gameplay. Many times we want to do another playthrough with options that make it more challenging.

This is what the New Journey+ in Jedi Survivor (or New Game+ as many of us know it) is for. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

After finishing the main story of Jedi Survivor, the New Journey+ option will be available on the menu screen. To play it, you have to pick an existing save where you have completed at least the main story of the game.

This will allow you to play through the game again with most of what you have unlocked and earned from your first playthrough.

What do you carry over into New Journey +

When you start this new adventure, the first thing that you’ll notice in the New Journey+ is that all of your unlocked cosmetics will carry over . Clothes, hairsttles and beards, lightsaber and blaster customizations, and BD-1 parts.

You will also have all skill points that you unlocked reset so you can spend them however you want.

There are some abilities that will be locked until you reach a certain point in the story. You might want to save some points for when more abilities are available.

At the start of New Journey + you will not have access to advanced abilities that Cal learns through the story such as Force Lift and Force Slam. You will also not be able to slide through the green shield barriers as this ability is earned on Jedha when Merrin gives you the relic.

All of these you will earn as you progress through the story of the game. Speaking of story, absolutely every collectible and map upgrade you have unlocked in your first run, will be disabled in New Journey +.

All chests will be open, all seeds you picked up for the garden will carry over and you will not get to pick them up a second time. All map upgrades you have unlocked will carry over as well.

You will keep all of the unlocked Perks. You will be able to replay each puzzle and Force Tear, but you will not be able to collect Stims , Health Upgrades and Force Upgrades . All of these essences will be disabled if you have picked them up during your first run.

Whatever items you have not completed or collected on your first run, they will still be available in New Journey +.

What is new and different in New Journey +

One of the best things about the New Journey+ is the addition of three new Perks. The first one is the Warrior Perk. This one is very simple, it replaces weak enemies with more powerful ones.

You will notice this right from the start. Standard Scout Troopers are replaced with Riot Troopers and Purge Troopers . If you want a more challenging experience, the Warrior perk combined with the next one are definitely for you. The Warrior perk is activated by default when you start New Journey +.

Purity is a perk that increases the damage output of all sources. Cal will two-shot almost any enemy but that goes both ways. This is the closest to a movie experience that you’ll get. Regardless of how big your health bar is, if Cal takes a few shots he is going to succumb.

I tried this perk and it is incredibly fun, a single mistake can prove to be fatal. Every time that an enemy is glowing red you will consider it twice before doing something reckless. This is probably the best way to practice and master your parrying, evading, and deflecting skills on the go.

The last Perk added to the New Journey+ is called Trendsetter. Unlike the other two, this doesn’t affect the difficulty of the gameplay. Every time you die, your appearance will be randomized: hair, beard, clothes, lightsaber, and even BD-1.

After being defeated three times, this is how I looked after each respawn. The game will choose only from the cosmetics you currently have. An interesting thing is that it looks like it tries to pick matching combinations for everything but the lightsaber. If you are into Jedi fashion, don’t worry about not looking good for the occasion.

The best thing about the Warrior, Purity, and Trendsetter perks is that none of them occupy a perk slot. You can equip them all at once and still use your three perk slots or more (if you have unlocked them).

In this image, you can see how I have equipped the Wisdom perk that uses three out of my three slots while still using the New Journey+ perks.

The Party Lightsaber option changes the color of your lightsaber with each attack that you do. It looks good but I would’ve preferred something else like getting the option to have one blue blade and a purple (or any other color). This is a good option if you love all lightsaber colors and can’t simply pick one.

My absolute favorite addition to the New Journey+ is the red lightsaber blade. I think it’s one of the most intimidating colors for any lightsaber wielder to use. Matching it with dark robes and a black lightsaber hilt is so satisfying.

The extra perks that change the difficulty and additional lightsaber blades don’t necessarily make it a completely new game but they definitely enhance the experience and prover a bigger challenge for those players that love getting pushed to the limits.

The first change you can make to Cal is right at the first Meditation Point. You can use all of the Skill Points and change Perks.

This concludes my guide to the New Journey+ in Jedi Survivor. You can take a look at theĀ  Star Wars Jedi Survivor Guides Master List Ā for more.

How to play the New Journey+ mode in Jedi: Fallen Order

Image of Zack Palm

Jedi: Fallen Order  stars Cal Kestist, a Jedi Padawan who has survived the events of Order 66, where the clone troopers turned on their Jedi generals. Almost all of the Jedi were eliminated, save a handful who were able to walk away with barely anything to their name.

InĀ  Fallen Order,Ā  you follow Cal as he returns to the life of a Jedi, meeting a small ragtag group of adventurers attempting to survive the onslaught of the Empire who have subjected the galaxy. Previously, after you completed the game and arrived at the credits, you had the opportunity to start your game over again to play through it one more time on a new difficulty, but you started from scratch.

A new update released on May 4 changes this a little bit. After you beat the game, you now have access to a New Journey+ mode. It’s  Fallen Order ‘s new game plus mode, giving you access to the start of the game, but you have all of the cosmetic items you obtained through your first game. With the New Journey+ game mode, you can play wearing any of Cal’s outfits you find on the journey, with any lightsaber design, and with any lightsaber color.

All of the chests containing cosmetics are empty, so you don’t need to wander off the beaten path to find any of them you already know about. Are there some you didn’t find? You’ll be able to revisit all of the planets in the game to find them. None of your abilities are unlocked, though. Only your cosmetic items remain through each game.

After beating Jedi: Fallen Order once, you can access the New Journey+ mode on the main menu of your game. In addition to all your cosmetics, you also unlock the red kyber crystals, and Cal’s Inquisitor outfit to wear in the game.

Season 31: Season of the Forbidden Archives - Now Live

Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 31: Season of the Forbidden Archives. Starting on April 12 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST , Nephalem can harness the power of Forbidden Archives theme, which first debuted with Season 20. For an in-depth look into whatā€™s coming, read below.

Seasonal Journey

Season theme.

Season Cosmetic Rewards

Season Journey Rewards

Seasonal conquest, haedrigā€™s gift.

Patch 2.7.7 Notes

Season 31 is the Season of the Forbidden Archives. Many adventurers have come to learn the power that dwells within the ancient nephalem artifact, Kanaiā€™s Cube. However, none understands this power better than the equally celebrated and reviled Horadrim, Zoltun Kulle. Kulle was able to unlock and harness the power of the Cube like none before, leveraging its power to siphon and archive the energies of powerful items. With Season 31, we explore the power Kulle might lend to your fingertips if his experiments went unchecked.

For the duration of Season 31, the slots in Kanaiā€™s Cube that allow you to equip three additional Legendary powers will not be restricted to their usual categories. While normally a player can equip one power each from the Weapon, Armor, and Jewelry categories, Season 31 players can mix and match between all three! This might allow you to run two Weapon powers with one Armor power. Or perhaps you might choose to run three Amulet powers instead. The choice is yours, and weā€™re as eager as you are to experiment with the new build opportunities this creates!

Season 31 Cosmetic Rewards

Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to players who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 31, this means awards originally available from Season 7 are returning to the Season Journey.

new journey loading

However, we know itā€™s nice to have something new to aim for if youā€™ve participated in previous Seasons. Weā€™re bringing back End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with not one, but two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Feast your eyes upon the Valor Portrait Frame and Angelic Treasure Goblin pet !

In addition to the Helm and Shoulders slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, youā€™ll be able to earn a series of portrait frames that embody the snowy, foreboding aura of the Eternal Woods. If you need a warm little pal to keep you cozy through your cold journeys, the Dream of Piers fiery nature should do the trickā€”when heā€™s not instilling night terrors in the local fauna.

If youā€™ve been diligently slaying demons for the past few Seasons and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, youā€™ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. Youā€™ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of five :

  • Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII within five minutes.
  • Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55.
  • All I Do IS Win: Complete two Conquests this Season.
  • Kill You: Kill Ghom at level 70 in under 30 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty.
  • Money Ainā€™t A Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty.
  • Take U There: Reach Greater Rift level 60 Solo.
  • Power Amplification: Use Kanaiā€™s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a level 50+ gem.
  • Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanaiā€™s Cube to reforge a Legendary item.

Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 31? Here are the challenges youā€™ll face! Returning for Season 31 is Sprinter/Speed Racer , where youā€™re challenged to complete the entire Diablo III campaign from Act I to Act V at level 70 in under 1 hour! Next is Avarice/Avaritia , where all that glitters is goldā€”that is, if you can complete a 50 million gold streak outside of The Vault or its Inner Sanctum. On a Good Day/I Canā€™t Stop encourages you to upgrade your Legendary Gems; level three Legendary Gems to 65 to complete this challenge! Push your way to Greater Rift level 75 to completeā€ÆDivinity/Lionhearted. Lastly, a fan-favorite for those who enjoy unconventional builds,ā€ÆThe Thrill/Superhumanā€Ærequires completion of a Greater Rift level 45ā€”solo and without any Set items equipped.

Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrigā€™s Gift have rotated once more. Weā€™ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, hereā€™s how it works:

Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrigā€™s Gifts. Each Gift contains a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely!

The set you receive depends on the class of the character youā€™re playing when you open each Haedrigā€™s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, youā€™ll need to open all three on the same character.

Here are the sets granted by Haedrigā€™s Gift in Season 31:

  • Barbarian ā€“ Wrath of the Wastes
  • Crusader ā€“ Rolandā€™s Legacy
  • Demon Hunter ā€“ Unhallowed Essence
  • Monk ā€“ Raiment of a Thousand Storms
  • Necromancer ā€“ Bones of Rathma
  • Witch Doctor ā€“ Helltooth Harness
  • Wizard ā€“ Tal Rashaā€™s Elements

How to Start New Game+ in Elden Ring

by enricofairme · Published March 3, 2022 12:14 AM · Updated October 3, 2023 10:49 PM

Once you beat the game in Elden Ring you can playthrough the game again on a harder difficulty. This is called new game+ (or NG+) mode. This mode allows players to infinitely replay the game in a harder difficulty while continue to build up their character. If you are wondering how to go about starting the harder playthrough this guide is for you. See below to learn how to start new game+ in Elden Ring .

Where to Start NG+ in Elden Ring

Once you’ve beaten the game and the credits roll you will return to the Roundtable Stronghold. It’s here that you can choose to start New Game+ or stay in your current game. To do this simply rest at the Table of Lost Grace in the roundtable room. This will bring up the menu. At the bottom of the menu is a new option that says “Begin Journey 2.” Select this option if you want to start NG+ mode.

New Game+ mode starts the game over again. The enemies, items, and bosses all reset. You can then playthrough the game again at a harder difficulty to complete content you missed or try different builds. New Game+ is available each time you beat the game, allowing you to continuously raise the difficulty each new playthrough.

Before you go into NG+ you ma want to do a few things. Often times it is beneficial to do a end-game checklist to prepare for you next run. This includes things like gathering materials, killing NPCs, exploring, and finishing up any outstanding quests that can still be completed. Good luck.

A Roadmap for Todayā€™s Entrepreneurs

A conversation with MIT Sloan’s Bill Aulet on how to navigate a fast-changing landscape.

  • Apple Podcasts
  • Google Podcasts

Many people aspire to entrepreneurship but we all know it’s a high-risk endeavor. Bill Aulet, the Ethernet Inventors Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management, has for decades studied what it takes for start-ups to succeed and advises the next generation of founders on how to do it. He discusses the key trends and changes he’s seen over the past few years, and outlines concrete steps anyone can take to get a new venture — including those within larger organizations — off the ground. Aulet is the author of the newly updated book Disciplined Entrepreneurship: 24 Steps to a Successful Startup.

ALISON BEARD: Welcome to the HBR IdeaCast from Harvard Business Review. I’m Alison Beard.

So many people in business today aspire to entrepreneurship. Whether you have an idea for a start-up or want to launch something new within a larger organization, it’s seen as a path to a more fulfilling career – and financial gains. At the same time, we know that entrepreneurship is really hard. We’ve all heard the stats on how many new ventures fail, and we’ve seen entrepreneurial efforts quashed by the corporate machine.

But our guest today says that we can de-risk the process and create companies that don’t just make a lot of money, but also have a positive impact on the world. He’s helped thousands of students and executives map out paths to successful businesses, and we wanted to speak with him about where he sees entrepreneurship today.

Bill Aulet is the Ethernet Inventors Professor of Entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He’s managing director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, and he’s the author of Disciplined Entrepreneurship: 24 Steps to A Successful Startup , newly updated and expanded. Bill, thanks for being on the show.

BILL AULET: Thank you very much. It’s an honor to be here.

ALISON BEARD: So you’ve been focused on innovation-based entrepreneurship for decades. What feels new or different right now compared to previous eras?

BILL AULET: I think if you look at the highest level, entrepreneurship is now accepted in society at a level that it was not nearly when I first started. When I graduated from college, which was back in 1980, they had just invented electricity. But no one thought of entrepreneurship as a serious field of study or a career.

I – God rest my mother’s soul, she was fantastic, but she never understood the difference between entrepreneurship and unemployment. She thought I was unemployed. But today people understand entrepreneurship. It’s accepted by society. And not only is it accepted by society, it is one thing that unites us. No matter whether you’re on the far right, far left, everybody loves entrepreneurship. One of the big differences that’s often overlooked is just the acceptance of entrepreneurship as a serious career path and a positive thing from all perspectives.

When we look at the more micro level, the numbers start to show you the people who want to come out of college, 20% or more of at almost every university, see entrepreneurship as a career path that they want to pursue. Some of them want to do it for money, but what we see is most of them want to do it because they feel like it’s a way to have impact. It’s a way to control their own destiny.

And then even at a more micro level, when you look at what’s going on now, not just the acceptance of entrepreneurship, the barriers to become an entrepreneur have really gone down. Let me give you one example. Just when I wrote the initial version of this book 10 years ago, it took you millions of dollars and at least six months, if not a year, to put an e-commerce company up, to get an e-commerce website going today. You can literally do that in two hours or possibly even one hour or less using Shopify. And that’s just one example of what’s going on with AWS.

All the technology that’s come out has made it much easier to create new products to start companies, which has actually shifted the game from, “You need to make a product to be an entrepreneur,” to “How do we go to market with a product?” Because products are becoming more and more, I don’t want to say commoditized, but it’s easier to produce products. And so of course you have to have a product at the end of the day, you have to get product market fit. That’s table stakes. But the actual game has shifted to be more of a, how do you come up with a go-to-market fit that is a channel market fit? How do you sell the product?

ALISON BEARD: MIT is obviously a hub for science and tech-based startups. So is the path from high-tech research lab to business getting easier also?

BILL AULET: This is a really interesting question because I just presented to the MIT board on this, and they were very interested in how do we accelerate that pipeline of lab to market? And there’s two approaches to that. The first approach is why don’t we make our technical people, our academics… Or researchers, they don’t have to be academics, researchers, more entrepreneurial. How do we teach them the entrepreneurial process? And we do that. We have a program called the Faculty Founders Program where we teach them how to do that. That’s one way to do it.

The other way to do it is to basically flood the zone with high-quality entrepreneurs who aren’t necessarily the inventors. Because entrepreneurship has many misperceptions about it and one of them is it’s an individual sport. It is definitively not by research. Entrepreneurship is not an individual sport, it’s a team sport. And the question is, how do you build a team that can take a technology, a new invention to market? And to do that, you have to have someone who knows how to commercialize it. Those people aren’t necessarily the same as the inventor. And so if you have great inventors and they understand the process to some degree, what we want to do is produce more high-quality entrepreneurs to kind of be around them. And then they will take that technology and that new invention and bring it to market.

I mean, people believe MIT is this faunt of entrepreneurship because of the tremendous research we have here, and we do. We have enormous research, but so does Caltech, so do other places. What really makes a difference is how much of that research can you commercialize? And that’s where the entrepreneurial process comes into play. And even if you look at MIT, less than 6% of the patents that we create are actually commercialized. Let me repeat that. Of all the patents we get, less than 6% of them actually get to the market, and that includes licensing to other companies. So if we could just increase that number somewhat, the pipeline of the billions of dollars that are spent on research here at MIT to get that to market would create a lot more impact.

ALISON BEARD: You note that entrepreneurship is not limited to startups. It can come from within large organizations too, especially ones with deep pockets like an Amazon or Alphabet or Meta. Have you seen any shift in where students and executives think that they’re best positioned to be entrepreneurial?

BILL AULET: I wish I could tell you that there’s more of that, but entrepreneurship is such a complicated thing. You mentioned this at the front. It’s really hard. And still, the best way to teach entrepreneurship is to go to the blank canvas of a startup. And that’s what we do in our programs for the most part. We start off with a blank canvas and then we teach people how to come up with ideas and then how to take those ideas and then figure out what’s a product to get product market fit, channel market fit, and then come up with a scalable business model that’s profitable – economically sustaining.

But if we stay at that level of just seeing entrepreneurship in startups, we as a society are going to be really underperforming against some of the big challenges we have like climate, because startups can only get you so far. They don’t have the strong balance sheets that can think for long periods of time. They don’t have the infrastructure. And when you think about challenges like climate and energy, we need to have big companies involved. And so we really do focus a lot on how do you take those skills. We teach you in startups and apply them in large companies.

We really encourage people to not just be entrepreneurs and startups, but to do it in government, in academic institutions and large organizations and medium-sized organizations and faith-based organizations or nonprofits and even in their personal lives. And I would like to see more of that. But it’s a hard sell because you got to build up the skills first before you go into that. But we’ve had huge successes.

I’ll give one example. Andrea Ippolito went through us – she’s a Cornell undergraduate, came here and was getting her graduate degree and then going for a PhD, and she went through our entrepreneurship programs. She was doing a company called Smart Scheduling to help healthcare organizations do kind of digital innovation to make them more effective, which is huge opportunity there. Well, she decided not to continue on that startup, but learned all the lessons. She then goes back to get her PhD. She’s recruited to go into the Obama White House, and she becomes the chief innovation officer overseeing the Veterans Administration. And she starts setting policies to improve innovation and entrepreneurship in the government for our veterans out there. She didn’t start a company at that point, and she’s literally making the lives of millions of our veterans better.

So I think that’s the journey. She was an entrepreneur the whole time. And the mindset, skillset and way of operating that we taught her, benefited her in all dimensions, not just in being a startup. I sometimes am frustrated, although if we get into it, I’ll talk about metrics of measuring success. And it’s too often measured and how many startups, how much revenue do they do, how much money did they raise – whereas how do you measure the impact that Andrea Ippolito had in those various jobs?

ALISON BEARD: Yeah. I mean the criticism of entrepreneurs in general and particularly tech startups for a while has been that they’re more focused on sort of easing these small pain points for pretty well-off customers. Like I’m thinking Uber, DoorDash, Tinder even, then tackling more difficult and important and challenging problems. Is that changing?

BILL AULET: Well, I can’t say for universal, but if you look in my new book, we very much believe, and this is something I work with Tom Byers of Stanford and Jon Fjeld on is entrepreneurship as an ethical activity. If you’re in it for profit-making, you’re not going to last.

And so the first thing that we start with, excuse me, is you must have a raison d’etre. That’s French for reason for existence. And if you say that it’s to make money, we reject that because no company is just all about profits and going to last.

And then just to go to the data here, we did a 10-year longitudinal study of our students coming out of our Delta V program, our capstone program. There’s this perception that people are doing dating apps and silly things. Well, our data showed, and this was an independent study by Daniela Ruiz Massieu of ITAM University, a tenured year professor, head of their entrepreneurship down there. And she came in and looked at it. And in the 10-year study looking at almost 200 entrepreneurs, she found that 89% of the businesses they were starting 89, 8-9, were directly aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

That makes me very, very proud. And that goes directly to what you’re talking about. We believe entrepreneurship is an incredible force for good in society. And if you understand that and you build your companies based on mission, mission-driven as opposed to money-driven, they will be more successful. And going to the data on how successful they are, her study shows 69% of them are still in business five years later.

ALISON BEARD: Those statistics definitely give me hope. But I would say that still the primary successful examples of entrepreneurs and companies might cloak their businesses in laudable goals like connecting the world for Facebook or giving us information like Google, when in practice what they seem to be doing is collecting and selling our data, addicting us to their platforms, and they’re still making piles of money. So how do you reconcile that with your vision of successful entrepreneurship always being ethical?

BILL AULET: That’s a really good point. I think I’m a system dynamics person which says the incentives of the system will dictate how people behave in it, and I find those very troubling. I find by the way, the examples of using social network or the Steve Jobs movies as that’s entrepreneurship, I find those to be very unhelpful. They’re misleading. They don’t get into what the real data shows you.

So how do I reconcile those? All I can tell you is that our companies are like Biobot Analytics. Biobot Analytics is started by two of our students here. One was Mariana Matus who was a PhD here at MIT from Mexico, and she wanted to start a company to make the world a better place and make cities more livable. And she partnered with Newsha Ghaeli who was Persian, that’s Iranian by way – out of Canada. They were very into how do we create safer cities.

They looked at this and built a dashboard that looked at wastewater, epidemiology wastewater, that is what we flush out the toilet and see what diseases do we have, what other things are going on in the city. So basically we could set it up in Boston and we could know. In Jamaica Plain, everything seems healthy, but if you look at West Cambridge, there seems to be some fentanyl use there or there seems to be a Zika virus outbreak. When they were going through our program, we actually had a discussion about what they were doing, and they were very into this. And then they met with one of the top venture capitalists in the world. And the top venture, this person said, enormously successful, sat down and said, “You’re not going to make a lot of money doing this. You should pivot to help pharmaceutical companies.”

And we walked out of the meeting. I said, well, “He’s very accomplished. What do you want to do? If that’s not what you want to do, we fully support you.” They said, “That’s not what we want to do. We want to make cities safer.” They stuck to there what they were doing. And Biobot Analytics has become extremely successful. They became the gold standard during Covid for measuring whether Covid is in a place weeks before you could with testing. And they’re doing tens of millions of dollars. They’re on a path to IPO.

ALISON BEARD: Well, that’s a fabulous example. What about the criticism that startup founders are often so laser-focused on bringing their idea, maybe one that will have good social impact to fruition, that they don’t think about the potential risks or negative externalities or broader consequences I’m thinking about the concerns that people have about OpenAI, for example. I think Sam Altman is sort of heralded as a new kind of entrepreneur, a new generation of entrepreneurs, but people are now also worried that he’s sort of stepping away from his initial altruistic vision for the company.

BILL AULET: Yeah, I mean, I think that’s a real leadership question that you’re going to have. At the end of the day, all these companies come down to the talent that they can draw. I think if you have unethical activities, people today are cognizant of that. They’re not just going to work for companies they feel are unethical. And that’s my hope. I don’t have data to back that up to the level that I would like, but that’s my sincere belief, Alison.

ALISON BEARD: Yeah. And perhaps having gone through the era of social media in particular, Facebook, Instagram, X, et cetera, and all the sort of unexpected problems, whether it’s teenage girl eating disorders to election interference, there’s perhaps more scrutiny now on startups to make sure, “Are you thinking about all the potential things that could go wrong as you’re building your business plan?”

BILL AULET: I would hope so. But again, we have a capitalist system that rewards you for making money and getting customers and the like. I think there’s definitely a role for government and regulation in that regard. I differ from some of my entrepreneurial libertarian colleagues in that regard. I think we do need that. I’m not here to tell you everything, sunshine, rainbows and unicorns jumping around, that is a challenge going forward. And that’s why unfettered capitalism I just don’t think is the right answer.

ALISON BEARD: Okay, so let’s dig into the updated book, which as I said, sets out 24 steps to getting a startup off the ground, from market segmentation to developing a product plan. And we obviously can’t get to all of the steps, but what, if anything, did you change from the 1st edition to this one?

BILL AULET: Oh my God, the 1st edition, just to put a little quick historical perspective on this, when I started teaching, I think it was 17 years ago, I started looking for that book that captured what I had learned being an entrepreneur for decades, we’re going from three startups and failing in my first one and getting better at the second one to having success in the third one to say, “Who’s captured that knowledge?” And all I found were books that were point things. You’d find Lean Startup, you’d find a Blue Ocean Strategy, you’d find Crossing the Chasm, these are all great books, but they were all individual tools.

And so for my class, I built a reader and I tried not to invent new stuff. I tried to take what I know already worked and just kind of stitch it together. And that was the genesis of this reader, which then it became quite popular- and people said, “Hey, this is really great. How can I get a copy of it?” And Wiley said, “Hey, we’d like to publish this.” And so the first version was minimum viable product.

And then once it got out there, I’ll never forget a colleague of mine here at MIT, Professor Charlie Fine, said, “Now you’re really going to learn about entrepreneurship.” And I said, “What do you mean? I put everything I know into that book.” He said, “Oh no, now you’re really going to learn because everyone’s going to come and tell you everything they know and they’re going to ask you questions and you’re going to become kind of the focal point of entrepreneurship discussion.” And dang it, Charlie was right. That’s what happened. Everybody started talking to me about that.

We literally got thousands of more examples as to how to do that. And over the past 10 years, we’ve learned so much. I’ve taken that minimum viable product and updated it to a new dramatically expanded and updated version with some of the new things we were talking about. And my first rewrite of it was 700 pages, which was completely unacceptable because the key to the book is, A, that it’s open source. We try to build a and take everything that works so that Simon Sinek, Jeffrey Moore, Stefan Thomke, Michael Porter – whoever it is, we’re pulling it in and we’re saying, “This is your toolbox that you need to do.” But that toolbox has to be small enough and accessible enough to be able to be used by an entrepreneur who has finite time and resources. In the end, we got it down to 400 pages. But it’s also expanded to be able to talk about how do you use AI, the change in the past 10 years between products becoming commoditized and the emphasis now is on go-to market, how do you develop go to market.

ALISON BEARD: Yeah. And I think that efficiency and practicality point is key, particularly for people who are considering becoming intrapreneurs. So it’s not like they’re trying to find a start-up and devoting all their time to it. It’s their full time job. But people who might want to start something new within an organization, how do you think about doing that in a way that is relatively easy, still takes thought and time, but you can work through a process before you present it to the higher ups?

BILL AULET: That’s exactly right., we’ve got to say, “Here’s the simplification of it and here’s where you get started and here are the steps you go through. While we’re giving you a sequential one, you have to understand it’s not linear. You’re going to have to do a lot of cycling, but at least you know what you’re supposed to be going.” Gives you some GPS, some templates and things to help you. But it’s a never-ending process.

The day you think that you’re done with entrepreneurship… I think Bob Dylan said it best, “He who is not being born is busy dying.” You have to continually be running the entrepreneurial process and understanding who your customer is, what you can do for your customer, how they acquire the product, how you make money, how do you scale the business. All these things are a never-ending cycle.

ALISON BEARD: How are your students and executives using new technology, like I’m thinking social media and gen AI, to make this process easier or faster?

BILL AULET: Well, we actually have a terrifically interesting tool right now. We’re internally calling it Tim the Beaver, your friendly AI entrepreneurship assistant. What it does is it’s a modified version of ChatGPT-4 Plus, which you could also use Gemini or whatever we want, but it takes the structure that we have in disciplined entrepreneurship and it trains that to ask the questions and fill in templates to say, “What’s your idea? Here’s your potential customers, which ones do you like? Which ones do you not like? What would be a beachhead market?” And then it will step you through, “Here’s your potential customers. Oh, by the way, here’s how you can reduce your cost to customer acquisition.”

And so using things, as you mentioned, like… I mean at the end of the day, it comes down to getting customers, getting customers to profit. As we say, the first commandment of entrepreneurship is the single necessary and sufficient condition for a business is a paying customer. So you have to focus on getting paying customers that are in a less expensive way, in a more profitable way, and keeping them and making them happy, and then scaling the business.

So all the things you mentioned fit into this framework, like, do you use social media to acquire customers? Then that’s reducing cost of customer acquisition. Or do you use them to increase your lifetime value? That’s a different part of the equation. But do you use it to interface with them to find out their needs and wants and opportunities? this tool, we see and we’re already using it, it can dramatically shrink the entrepreneurial process of creating a new venture by as much as 90% in parts of it.

You still have to do primary market research, but a lot of the secondary market research you have to do, we can just do that in 15 minutes.

The best knowledge is not going to come from one institution, from one zip code. If we’re getting serious about pushing the field of entrepreneurship and raising the bar for it, we need to build a collaborative knowledge base that’s shared amongst all people. You’ve got to have a common body of knowledge and things that are agreed on, and those things should be agreed on based on evidence, not storytelling or who debates the best.

ALISON BEARD: Yeah. And how are you making sure that your style of disciplined entrepreneurship is spreading throughout the world, not just in Cambridge, not just in the United States?

BILL AULET: We’re not a for-profit. We have a terrible business model, Alison. It’s called, we create knowledge and give it away to the rest of the world to create positive impact. And so everything we do is open-sourced. And we need to take the long view here. And we have that, if you call it business model, to think long-term. And that’s what we should do. That is our role in society, and we should not back down from that at all.

ALISON BEARD: Once would-be startup founders have gone through all of your steps, there is still the problem of financing and finding investors. So how do you advise your students and executives you work with to go about that right now?

BILL AULET: Well, the first thing is there’s lack of confidence and knowledge about finance. I have a free book now called Finance for Entrepreneurs. We just have to break down that and demystify finance in a lot of ways first.

And then secondly, and I tell my students this all the time, and some listen and some don’t, is, “You want to get funding? Listen to what I have to say. The best way to get funding is to build a great company. The slowest way to get funding is to go try to play a game where you’re convincing the VCs you have what they want. Just go out and build a great business and they will find you. And by the way, there’s a great way to get funding. It’s called build a product that customers want and get them to pay you for it. And then guess what? You have money. And by the way, once you get that money, that’s validation that will help you raise it from other people.”

ALISON BEARD: Terrific, Bill. Well, thank you so much for joining me and definitely giving me hope that there are entrepreneurs out there who are going to make the world a better place.

BILL AULET: Thank you very much for having me on IdeaCast , and I look forward to any feedback.

ALISON BEARD: That’s Bill Aulet, professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management and author of the newly updated and expanded Disciplined Entrepreneurship: 24 Steps to a Successful Startup. His colleague Paul Cheek, recently released the follow-up, Disciplined Entrepreneurship: Startup Tactics.

ā€˜Rustā€™ Armorer Is Sentenced to 18 Months for Involuntary Manslaughter

The armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, got the maximum sentence for loading a live round into a gun on a film set, leading to the death of Halyna Hutchins, the movieā€™s cinematographer.

The armorer on the film ā€œRust,ā€ who loaded a live round into a revolver that went off on the set in 2021 and killed its cinematographer, was sentenced on Monday to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

The sentence was the maximum that the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, could receive.

In her manslaughter trial last month , prosecutors argued that Ms. Gutierrez-Reed had been repeatedly reckless in her job of managing weapons and ammunition, directly causing the tragedy on Oct. 21, 2021, when the gun that Alec Baldwin was practicing drawing from his shoulder holster fired a live bullet, killing the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins.

Mr. Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to an involuntary manslaughter charge. His trial is scheduled for July, though a judge is currently weighing a motion from his defense to dismiss the indictment.

The sentencing by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer came after prosecutors released summaries of calls that Ms. Gutierrez-Reed had made from jail, where she was sent after her conviction.

Prosecutors used the calls, during which Ms. Gutierrez-Reed calls the jurors in her case ā€œidiots,ā€ to argue that she should receive the highest possible sentence. The call summaries include Ms. Gutierrez-Reed saying that the judge was on a ā€œpower tripā€ and alleging, without evidence, that the judge was ā€œgetting paid off.ā€

Judge Marlowe Sommer said during the hearing, at the First Judicial District Courthouse in Santa Fe, N.M., that giving Ms. Gutierrez-Reed less than the full sentence would be a ā€œpassā€ that she did not deserve, citing the jail calls as evidence of a lack of remorse.

ā€œYou were the armorer, the one that stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone,ā€ the judge said. ā€œYou alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon. But for you, Ms. Hutchins would be alive, a husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother.ā€

Before the sentence was announced, Ms. Gutierrez-Reed, 26, pleaded for leniency, saying that when she took the ā€œRustā€ job she was ā€œyoung and I was naĆÆve, but I took my job as seriously as I knew how to.ā€

ā€œDespite not having proper time, resources and staffing when things got tough I just did my best to handle it,ā€ Ms. Gutierrez-Reed said in court, reading from a statement, her wrists shackled. ā€œThe jury has found me in part at fault for this God-awful tragedy but that doesnā€™t make me a monster, that makes me human.ā€

Ms. Gutierrez-Reedā€™s lawyers have said that they will appeal her conviction and argued for leniency at the sentencing hearing, saying that the defendant had deep sadness over Ms. Hutchinsā€™s death. They said that the overwhelming public attention on the case meant she had to endure ā€œcollateral consequences far harsher than most defendants ever must face,ā€ citing the deluge of press coverage and death threats she has received.

The defense argued throughout the trial that Ms. Gutierrez-Reed was being scapegoated for a tragedy that occurred because the production did not afford her enough time to focus on weapons, something that several producers denied throughout the trial.

In court papers, prosecutors detailed jail calls in which Ms. Gutierrez-Reed contended that she ā€œdidnā€™t need to be shaking the dummies all the time,ā€ referring to a safety measure in which weapons specialists shake inert cartridges, called dummy rounds, to hear a rattle inside, which indicates that the round cannot fire from the gun. On the day of the shooting, Ms. Gutierrez-Reed was supposed to have loaded six dummy rounds in Mr. Baldwinā€™s revolver, but one ended up being live.

ā€œEvery time a gun was loaded with ā€˜dummyā€™ rounds, it was a game of Russian roulette,ā€ the lead prosecutor, Kari T. Morrissey, wrote in a court filing ahead of the sentencing.

In a separate call, prosecutors said, Ms. Gutierrez-Reed said she was trying to get her lawyerā€™s paralegal to reach out to Ms. Hutchinsā€™s family about speaking on her behalf at the sentencing hearing. She also said she wants prosecutors to ā€œput Alec Baldwin in jail.ā€

ā€œIt was my sincere hope during this process that there would be some moment when Ms. Gutierrez took responsibility, expressed some level of remorse that was genuine, and that moment has never come,ā€ Ms. Morrissey said during the hearing.

Ms. Gutierrez-Reedā€™s lawyers wrote in court papers that those jail calls, which they characterized as displaying ā€œfrustration at the system,ā€ did not detract from her ā€œheartbreak and extreme sadness over what occurred on the ā€˜Rustā€™ set.ā€

At the sentencing hearing, Ms. Gutierrez-Reedā€™s stepfather, Thell Reed, a prominent Hollywood armorer who she said had taught her how to do the job, gave testimony on her behalf, telling the judge that it would be unjust to give her prison time because others were in part responsible for the tragedy.

The armorerā€™s conviction was the first time anyone had been held criminally responsible at a jury trial for the death of Ms. Hutchins.

The focus of prosecutors has now largely shifted to Mr. Baldwin, who was indicted this year on an involuntary manslaughter charge. Prosecutors have accused him of negligently failing to make sure the gun he was handed that day was not loaded with live ammunition. He has vehemently denied responsibility, saying that he had been told the gun did not contain live ammunition and that he should be able to rely on professionals on set who were hired to oversee guns and safety.

During Ms. Gutierrez-Reedā€™s two-week trial, prosecutors said she should be held criminally responsible for Ms. Hutchinsā€™s death because of a series of serious safety violations that they argued had primed the production for disaster. They accused her of bringing live rounds onto the set, of not properly checking the ammunition that she loaded into guns and gun belts, and of standing by as members of the production, including one of the stunt performers, handled weapons against safety protocols.

In a separate case, Ms. Gutierrez-Reed is facing a charge of unlawful carrying of a firearm in a licensed liquor establishment. Prosecutors say that a video on her phone they discovered during the manslaughter case shows Ms. Gutierrez-Reed sneaking a pistol into a bar in New Mexico. She has pleaded not guilty.

Before the judge handed down the armorerā€™s sentence, she heard testimony from family members, friends and colleagues of Ms. Hutchins who talked about her ambition and vision as a cinematographer and her dedication as a mother, with one friend, Jen White, telling the judge, ā€œI feel like she has gotten lost in the swarm of all the finger-pointing and blame in the aftermath of this completely preventable tragedy.ā€

Joel Souza, the director of ā€œRust,ā€ who was injured when the bullet passed through Ms. Hutchins and hit him, testified that Ms. Hutchins, who would have turned 45 years old last week, ā€œnot only had an incredible talent for her art, but she had a talent for life.ā€

And Emilia Mendieta, a friend and cinematographer, recalled Ms. Hutchinsā€™s excitement to begin filming a western, recounting a phone call shortly before ā€œRustā€ began in which she explained that the movie ā€œhas horses and gunfights and weā€™re shooting out in the desertā€ and that ā€œitā€™s a huge steppingstoneā€ in her career.

ā€œI often think about that moment,ā€ Ms. Mendieta said. ā€œHer excitement, her joy at embarking on this new adventure.ā€

Swerve strickland’s journey from villain to aew ‘anti-hero’ has him on cusp of championship goal.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

It would be the moment everything Swerve Strickland has worked for will manifest ā€” the payoff for him and the fans who have pushed him to this point.

The 33-year-old spoke about holding the AEW world title and becoming the promotionā€™s first black world champion from the day he stepped into the company in March 2021, four months after being released by WWE.

Strickland has his best opportunity to make that reality when he faces Samoa Joe for the AEW World championship in the main event of the Dynasty pay-per-view at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis on Sunday (8 p.m., Bleacher Report, Triller).

Swerve Stickland and Prince Nana.

ā€œItā€™s a culmination of just sacrifice, hard work, going against the grain, literally proving things to yourself. Not just proving things to the world,ā€ Strickland said. ā€œProving it to yourself that what you believe in truly can change the perception of you in the world.ā€

When Strickland was let go by WWE after being the North American champion in NXT and leading the ā€œHit Rowā€ faction to the main roster, he signed with AEW with a world championship on his mind.

He felt most fans thought WWE dropped the ball by letting him go, but saw some who didnā€™t believe he could reach the heights he strived for.

Sunday is about repaying peopleā€™s faith that he would make good on the promise they see in him.

ā€œThe biggest part is paying off the fans for investing ever since I came into AEW,ā€ Strickland said. ā€œIt was a really big when I was let go by WWE. It was a fact that a lot of people, the majority of fans were just like, ā€˜Oh man, they made a big mistake. Whatā€™s gonna happen next?ā€™ Because I feel like people always believed in me in a sense, but there were still a lot of doubters who didnā€™t see the potential and it was proving a lot of those people wrong and leveling up to the potential of the fans who did believe.ā€

That took time.

Strickland uses the 1993 film ā€œDemolition Manā€ starring Sylvester Stallion and Wesley Snipes to describe his characterā€™s evolution in AEW.

Samoa Joe and Swerve Strickland face off at AEW Dynasty on Sunday.

In the film, the world is in perfect order with no crime for those who live within the upper-class domain, while Snipesā€™ character rails against it in an attempt to survive in a world that isnā€™t as welcoming to him.

For Strickland, that was the justification for all the bad and violent things his character and Mogul Embassy faction did for most of his run ā€” doing whatever it took to get the opportunities his character believes were handed to others at the top of the company.

It culminated with his feud with ā€œHangmanā€ Adam Page, with Stricklandā€™s character going so far as to create a movie-villain-type scene with manager Prince Nana invading the former AEW world championā€™s home and sonā€™s nursery before their Texas Death match at Full Gear in November.

Then a funny thing happened.

Fans started to get even more behind Strickland after three straight wins over Page ā€” who was doing whatever it took in the storyline to deny his rival the AEW world championship ā€” including the bloody Texas Death match that many put up there with the best of the genre.

Fans loved what he was doing so much, that Page and Strickland pulled off a successful double turn during a time-limit draw in February on Dynamite to set up an AEW championship triple-threat match at Revolution where Joe pinned Page after it appeared Stickland had it won.

ā€œDoing the bad things I did [in storyline] to get to where I need to go, people understood that,ā€ Strickland said. ā€œI think thatā€™s where it turns from being a bad person and a heel and villain to almost like the anti-hero. The guy who is just trying to get to the opportunity that these guys were gifted from Day 1 [in AEW]. This guy is coming from being let go by a major company, fired unfairly. Then here, heā€™s getting title opportunities but heā€™s not winning them. ā€˜You know what, weā€™re riding for this guy.ā€™

What Strickland is most proud about his feud with Page is that even after five matches together since October the audience isnā€™t tired of their story.

ā€œPeople still want to see more,ā€ Strickland said. ā€œThey still think there is so much more meat on the bone. Now people are still suspecting [him on Sunday]. His presence is still looming around even though he hasnā€™t been on TV in like a month. People still expect and want to see more. Nothing feels really stale about it.ā€

There are other reasons Strickland gradually turned the audience in his favor.

Swerve Strickland drop kicks Samoa Joe.

Bringing Nana in as his manager last April with his viral dance moves unlocked an added layer of entertainment to the package of him and Mogual Embassy in their promos and fans dancing along with Nana. There is no one else in wrestling like him in Stricklandā€™s mind and it ā€œbroadened a lot of the ideas of how we can be on screen.ā€

Despite getting the best of Page, Strickland believes losing other big matches contributed to fans’ eagerness to see him finally raise gold in AEW.

Since last May, he lost two opportunities at the AEW International championship, fell short of the final in the Continental Classic and then missed out on the world title at Revolution.

Itā€™s allowed Strickland to do something he feels he does best.

ā€œI got further in my career losing than I did winning,ā€ he said. ā€œEvery time I lost I moved forward. Thatā€™s a genuine skill that a lot of people donā€™t know how to do and I feel like thatā€™s one of my benefits. Thatā€™s one of my biggest gifts. No matter what, I turn a situation for me.ā€

Heā€™s also made sure not to lose the characterā€™s grit and the edge thatā€™s won him the hearts of fans.

Joe ā€” who Strickland describes as having that ā€œbig bad feelā€ and being the next mountain in his way ā€”  has been an ideal opponent to do it against.

During the contract signing leading up to the match, Strickland signed the paper in his own blood after a beatdown from Joe and last week he did a ridiculous top rope stomp to the outside onto a group of security guards just to coldly stare down his opponent in the eyes one more time before brawling.

ā€œThose elements are what got the fans to buy into what you were serving them,ā€ Strickland said. ā€œOnce you start mixing up the recipe a little bit, people donā€™t feel that genuine connection anymore. The first album that you made that put you on the map was full of all this raw emotion. It was a little gritty and stuff. But now the fact that you got the record deal and your turn and stuff, you got to still stick with who made you what you are. You got to stick to the source material, that grittiness and that underground feel.ā€

Stickland would become world champion at a unique time in AEWā€™s history with the company looking to boost live event attendance and grow its ratings all while in the middle of critical media rights renewal talks with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Swerve Strickland does a top rope stomp on to security members.

He said the companyā€™s decision to release the CM Punk-Jack Perry altercation security footage from All In to try to boost interest in Perry and the Young Bucks vs. FTR tag team championship ladder match at Dynasty is ā€œnot necessarily my thing.ā€

But he respects AEW president Tony Khan and Matthew and Nicholas Jackson, the companyā€™s executive vice president, and their belief it was the right call.

ā€œThatā€™s kind of why they are in the position they are,ā€ he said. ā€œThey see something in it and sometimes you got to trust them. Even if itā€™s not necessarily what you would do, you got to trust the people in the position they are to do something like that.ā€

Strickland also sees some unique things he can bring to being AEWā€™s world champion in addition to the freshness of potential new feuds and stories. He does believe itā€™s possible he could tap into the fact that he spent eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves for the first time since his days in Lucha Underground now that heā€™s a babyface.

Strickland calls helping bring the next business jump for AEW the ā€œbiggest challengeā€ should he become champ.

Swerve Strickland hopes to be the AEW world champion after his match at AEW Dynasty.

ā€œI have a lot of outside connections with the entertainment business so that right there is something I want to dabble into a little bit more, take that to new heights, put AEW in a different viewing point than what a lot of people have seen from it already and thatā€™s a high bar in itself,ā€ said Strickland, who release an album in 2022 and collaborated with artist Flash Garments on his current AEW theme song. ā€œDifferent style of matches, different style of story, different style of not just competitive but different style of storyteller.

ā€œI have never been the run-of-the-mill type of person. Iā€™ve always kind of steered things in a different way and I have a lot of different ways to do that in AEW than I could anywhere else and Iā€™m at a different stage where I can really take the ball, the keys to this lovely household which is All Elite Wrestling is in the industry which is such a baby and letā€™s mature it a little bit.ā€

The table is set for that after the company brought in ā€œknown home run hittersā€ in free agents Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Mone’ . Strickland has had very little interaction with all three in his career and is happy they are on his team.

ā€œI want to be a part of that and I want to be the leader of that,ā€ he said.

For that to happen, he will need to take the AEW world championship for Joe at Dynasty, making good on everything he and his fans have seen in him since he joined the company.

ā€œIt was justification for why I was the way I was [in storyline]ā€ Stickland said. ā€œIt was tapping into the fact that, it almost felt like, ā€˜Dam, this guy is fighting and surviving off of scraps for so long. Man, when is this guy going to finally get his turn to have a meal at the table?ā€

Sunday could be Stricklandā€™s first taste of the next level of stardom heā€™s hungered and fought for.

A Pakistani oncologist’s journey: Navigating commute challenges

I’ve always been afraid of driving. My home is quite far away from my hospital, and for the past eight years, I’ve been traveling via Uber for my daily commute. I don’t have a good memory of roads, lanes, and streets, even in my own city. I just rely on the driver and Google Maps. This experience with Uber and online taxi services is comfortable for me for two reasons: first, I don’t have fixed duty hours, so I can call a cab whenever I want. Secondly, the taxi driver is not interested or judgmental at all about where I am going or at what time. His job is just to get me to my desired location and take his fare in the end.

Once my parents hired a car for me, and there was an elderly uncle who was the driver of this car. His sole duty was to pick me up from my home, drop me off at the hospital, and then bring me back in the evening. Whenever I got free from work and if I was a bit late, even by 5 to 10 minutes, his mood would sour. He would scold me every time for wasting his time. Sometimes I would ask him to drop me at my friend’s hostel in the evening. He would look at me in a suspicious manner as if I was committing a grave sin by not going home after sunset. I left this car after a month. But this experience traumatized me so much that I never hired another driver for even a month again in my life. My parents have accepted that I’ve grown independent. They have become accustomed to my schedule of never being home on time, and they trust me so much that they don’t even ask me about my whereabouts whenever I go out. But I love my freedom and independence so much that I am not willing to give it up at any cost.

I was enjoying my daily commute via Uber, but there came a time when petrol and diesel became really expensive due to the devaluation of the Pakistani currency and rising inflation. Doctors in residency do not earn a lot in Pakistan, and most of my monthly income was being spent just on my commute, which was becoming frustrating day by day. Then I found Bykea.

Bykea is a Pakistan-based mobility app that uses machine learning to empower city dwellers with affordable mobility. It offers ride-hailing, parcel delivery, payment services, and more through its motorbike network. But the problem is that even in the capital city, Islamabad, this service is mostly used by older people for traveling. This service is used to send a parcel via motorbike most of the time. It was a lot more affordable than Uber, and I felt overjoyed upon discovering it because I had to spend very little on my commute. I started booking Bykea and traveling by motorbikes every day. Initially, it was a bit uncomfortable because some riders made my journey miserable due to overspeeding. But after a few days, I got accustomed to riding on a bike. I even started enjoying the bike rides more than the taxi rides, maybe due to the adrenaline rush or maybe due to comparing the extremely costly fare of Uber to the very minimal cost of having a ride on Bykea.

I was a lot happier, but the people around me were not. They started asking me different questions, like why I ride a bike and how I even sit on it. Some people were uncomfortable seeing me riding on a bike with a different rider each day. Our people have nothing else to do except poke their noses into everyone’s matters and their life choices. Whenever a neighbor saw me on a bike, they started objecting and expressing their complaints to my mother to control me. I never paid attention to them, but the complaints became more intense every single day. Then I told my mother that whenever someone complains, just tell them, “Why don’t you take her to the hospital in your own car?” This answer gradually made people silent and mind their own business.

One day I got really late from my hospital, and it was 8 p.m. at night. I tried to book an Uber but couldn’t find any car in the vicinity of my hospital. So, I decided to book a ride via Bykea. Although I was a little afraid, I had no other option. The ride started, and the journey was really bumpy due to the darkness. After a few roads, the rider started talking to me. I have a habit of talking and reciprocating the conversations of even drivers because it prevents boredom, and sometimes I find it interesting because it gives me an idea of the psyche of different kinds of people in my society. The rider started telling me how he had a garment shop, and the inflation and political turmoil in the country influenced his business badly. He had to sell his shop and started riding this motorbike, although he was satisfied with this job. The journey was quite long, and he told me all about his life story and the details about his family. I don’t know what came into his mind that he started asking me questions now. He asked where I worked and in which department. Sometimes, when you’re spontaneous and expressive, it becomes difficult to lie. I told him the name of my hospital and the fact that I was working in oncology. His second question was, “Are you married?” Now, he was passing through a very dark alley, and it was quite late at night. I became really frightened, and I just answered him, “Yes, I have two kids.” His interview continued, and then he asked about my husband and where he was working. After the first lie, I became confident and just got familiar with how to answer him. I told him, without any hesitation, that yes, my husband is a doctor too, and he works in a so-and-so hospital. He then asked me about the ages of my children, and I told him that one was three years old and the other one was just six months old. He then started telling me that he is a single brother of 8 sisters and has a lot of nephews and nieces. He was experienced in raising kids and spending time with them. He started giving me tips on how to take care of young children and the things we need to have at different ages for their health and wellbeing. I was now really comfortable and enjoying the rest of my journey with him.

Since that day, I have memorized this script about my husband’s details, my children’s ages, and my own. I think it’s better to ride Bykea as a single girl than to be afraid of telling the other person that she is unmarried. Married females are just considered a little bit more secure and kind of more respectable in our society.

There are a lot of issues in our country regarding privacy. People around you are the first ones to give their opinion on your income, lifestyle, marriage, the way you dress, and even the mishaps in your life. A friend of mine, who herself is a palliative care physician, in her 40s and is single, got diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout her treatment, she had to endure a lot of painful remarks from people who labeled her disease due to her marital status and the way she dressed. Nobody talked about or appreciated the way she was taking care of her elderly parents all on her own and even fighting bravely with a deadly disease while coming to work. She endured everyone’s remarks patiently, and thank God she was cured and is now living a happy life. But our people don’t spare you from their harsh and invalid remarks that scar your soul.

Many times, I think about leaving this country to get a better job abroad, but then I remember the part of being a member of this closely-knit community as well. Everything has its pros and cons. The perk of being in Pakistan is having family around you who support and nurture you till they are alive. Parents and grandparents are considered blessings for the household they are in. They are never sent to a nursing home. Our people have beautiful hearts when it comes to supporting their ailing family members and giving charity to the less fortunate. There is a concept of visiting the sick, kindness towards animals, and greeting everyone around you. In our religion, even smiling towards anyone is considered charity. We live in a society where feeding others is seen as a great fortune. Every other day, family members are invited for lunch or dinner. People get together over tea and exchange all kinds of problems and worries with their loved ones. I think even this is a form of therapy. If you go to the market close to your home and forget to bring cash, the shopkeeper will never hesitate to give you groceries on the promise that you will pay him next time. Hospitals still have wards where people not only take care of their own patients but also the person lying next to their bed. Our people form friendships easily and are willing to do everything for their friends. When friends go out for food, there is no concept of splitting the bill among everyone. There is always a generous friend who pays the whole bill.

Many doctors are leaving Pakistan to secure a better future and pursue a better lifestyle, but I fear they will always miss the values of our country and feel lonely. I’m not saying striving for a better future is wrong, but sometimes I am afraid of leaving my family behind. I fear the loneliness of staying in a place where you don’t get a chance to interact freely as you do in Pakistan. But people have to support their families, and not everyone is privileged to earn a good livelihood here. In life, we have to compromise on many things to find prosperity and a stable income. I pray that wherever my people are living, they find delight and pleasure in everything they do.

May 3, 2019; Alameda, CA, USA; Oakland Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby reacts during rookie

Ā© Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Las Vegas Raiders' Maxx Crosby Reflects on His Time in the NFL

Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby has come a long way since being drafted in 2019. On the NFL's first day of voluntary workouts, Crosby took a moment to reflect on his journey.

  • Author: Ezekiel Trezevant IV

In this story:

Veteran Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby is entering his sixth season in the National Football League. Since being drafted, he has become the face of the Raiders organization. For Crosby, his time in the league has flown by.

"I mean, it is crazy,ā€ Crosby told media members on Monday. "It puts it into perspective. I don't know whether my rookie year seems like 20 years ago or two days ago; it's crazy to me. Being back in Oakland, being in the Coliseum, I remember it like it was yesterday, but at the same time, it's like I feel like that was in a past life that I went through that.

ā€œIt's crazy how life is; everything is always on the go, and I'm just staying in the day. So, I don't really have time to reflect and look back, but just to look at, it's like, damn, I'm already going into year six. It feels like I was doing these interviews. I saw one of my interviews a couple of days ago; somebody sent it to me, and I had like bleached hair, no beard, looking all types of crazy, no tattoos. I'm like, 'Holy [expletive], we've come a long way.'ā€

Since being drafted by the Raiders, Crosby has gone from a fourth-round draft pick to arguably the best defensive end in the NFL. During his time with the Raiders, he's registered over 300 tackles and over 50 sacks.

The veteran defensive lineman is a few more productive seasons away from having a legitimate argument to be inducted into the Hall of Fame when his career ends. Crosby, however, is only focused on being the best teammate he can be and helping the Raiders win more games.

ā€œIt's been a blessing,ā€ Crosby said. ā€œI mean, it's been a damn journey, and for me, all that matters at the end of the day is winning, winning for this organization. I pour my heart and soul into this, and I want to be the best leader and teammate I can be on a daily basis, and being a Raider is something that's special to me.ā€

ā€œI've got real relationships from the owner all the way down to the janitor. I'm here every day for a reason. It's like a family. There's not many teams that operate like we do, and we've just got to translate that to winning and it's just exciting to get things rolling again."

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
