Which New York City discount pass is best?

If you’re not sure which card to choose, here is a New York City attraction pass comparison chart so you can see which ones include the activities and attractions you definitely want to see. The prices in parentheses show the regular admission price, so you can calculate your savings with each card.

Looking at all the options, my top recommendation is the New York Pass if it’s your first time in the Big Apple or you plan to do a lot of sightseeing . Specifically, the three-day card will give you plenty of time to see the most popular attractions.

If you aren’t planning to see that many things, and saving on prime attractions is what you’re after, then grab a pen and a piece of paper and run this quick calculation:

• Choose which of the starred attractions in the chart you want to visit no matter what.
• Add up the ticket prices of those attractions.
• Check the price for each of the tourist pass options (take into account the days you want to spend visiting those attractions or the number of attractions you want to see.)
• Check if all the passes include the starred attractions you want to visit. If not, add up the prices of those attractions to the cost of that pass to have the total cost per option.
• Compare the total cost of visiting your favorite attractions without a pass with the total cost per tourist pass (cost of the passes + cost of attractions not included.)

At this point you should know which is the cheapest option for you, but if you’re still unsure and are deciding between two options, repeat the calculation with other non-starred attractions you want to visit, too. If the difference is not that much, I recommend getting an all-inclusive pass, like the New York Pass or the New York Sightseeing Day Pass .

We were disappointed to learn the site seeing pass does not include the 9/11 museum.

Hi James, Yes, the New York Sightseeing Pass is the only NYC card that doesn’t include the 9/11 Museum (although it does include a 9/11 walking tour).

My husband and I are taking our son and 10 year old grandson to NYC for a 3-day visit in June. We are considering either the 3-day NYC pass or the Sightseeing Day pass. We would like to upgrade the Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty visit to include the pedestal access and possibly the crown. We would also like to upgrade the Empire State building 86th floor ticket to include the 102nd floor viewing. Do either pass include the upgrade, or would we need to purchase a ticket upgrade when we arrive at the attraction? Would it be best to purchase tickets before we go for specific days? Can we purchase the passes this early and do we need to specify which days we want to use them for? If we don’t specify days, could the attraction be full for the day? Thank you for your information. Hi Monica – the websites for each pass describe in detail which attractions are included. If you get a pass that includes a bus tour, then you will also get details on using those buses for transportation. For passes that don’t include bus tours, you can use NYC public subways & buses or taxis.

Hi! We had plans to travel in December. Given everything that has happened, I thought that it would not be possible. Are there pass prices for seniors? Should we just go on our own for less money? Are any passes good for Hop on Hop Off for more than 1 day?

Hi Sheri. Some of the passes offer Senior rates, but I think most are just adult and child pricing. I can’t answer whether or not you will save by going on your own as it all depends on what you want to see and over how long of time period.

Best time to travel to new york.

Visiting New York is worthwhile at any time of year, but I personally like the warm months best. Summer in New York can be very hot and humid. So, for many, the best times to visit New York is April and June, and September and October.

Spending Christmas in New York or enjoying the pre-Christmas season in New York City is also a wonderful experience.  The ice rinks are open, the city is beautifully decorated, and, if it snows, the dream vacation at wintertime is perfect!

Paying in New York

You can pay for almost everything with your credit card, even the smallest amounts. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, stores, restaurants, and bars. Don’t have one yet? Then, check out the best credit card to have in the USA here.

Best Way to Travel in New York

Finding your way around New York is quite easy, even if it doesn’t look like it at first. The streets’ checkerboard pattern makes finding your way around easy. These are the best ways to get around New York:

Metro / Subway: If you have longer distances ahead of you, then the Subway is your friend, because here you can travel really cheap. It’s easy to use! The MetroCard is available at every Subway station. You can buy single rides or the popular MetroCard for 7 days; that way you can travel for a week in New York at a fixed price. Taxi:  In New York, you can choose between the Yellow Cab and Uber. You can check out our tips and all the information you need to know in our following blog:  Taxi in New York City .

By bike: With many of the New York sightseeing passes (you can find out more about this budget tip in my New York Pass comparison ), the bike rental is included. We ourselves really love using New York’s Citi Bikes. This city bike program has over 1,000 stations throughout New York City, and it’s super-cheap. We’ll show you how it works in the Citi Bike New York article.

On Foot: You’ll be surprised how much walking you’ll do in New York. After all, there’s something to see on every corner. So be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Where to Stay in New York?

Which neighborhood is best for you depends on several things: your interests, how close you want to be to the attractions and what your travel budget is. In the image below, I’ve drawn you my favorite neighborhoods of New York including the main attractions nearby.

And, on the subject of safety: In all of Manhattan, the Bronx , Brooklyn, and large parts of Queens, you don’t have to worry about being out and about in the evening. New York City is one of the safest cities in the world!

Where Should you Stay in New York?

Manhattan – it doesn’t get more central than this: Manhattan is the most famous borough of them all. Plus, it contains 95% of all the attractions New York is known for. Everything is within easy reach, and you are right in the middle of it all. On the other hand, the hotels are a bit more expensive than in Brooklyn or Queens .

Brooklyn – urban and relaxed: For a long time, Brooklyn was the insider’s tip: now it’s “completely” normal neighborhoods. However, you’ll quickly notice one thing: life is much more normal, because it’s more of a residential area. It’s super relaxed, pleasant, and just as diverse as Manhattan. Above all, you can enjoy the Manhattan skyline from here!

Queens – the new trendy neighborhood: Queens is a bit more “normal” than Brooklyn is, but, lately, we’ve noticed that it is getting more and more gentrified. The hotels in Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island!) are especially popular because they are cheaper compared to Manhattan—and they have a perfect connection to the Subway, which makes Queens a great alternative to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

What to See in New York?

One thing to know in advance: just because there is so much to see in New York, a little planning makes absolute sense. For highlights like the Empire State Building ( here ), the Edge Hudson Yards observation deck ( here ) or the One World Observatory ( here ), I recommend buying the tickets online in advance. This will not only save you waiting time on site, but you can also be sure that you will actually be able to visit your desired sights.

These are my tips after more than 20 visits to New York:

• Observation decks:  New York City has no less than five (!) major observation decks to offer, and each one is a dream in itself. My two favorites are The Edge Hudson Yards and the One World Observatory , because from here you have a sensational view of New York from above and you can see the Empire State Building . From the end of 2021, another cool option will be added with the glass One Vanderbilt . One more thing about the Empire State Building: It’s the most visited observation deck in New York, so it’s always busy. Avoid the crowds in the morning – and if you really want to go to the Empire State Building in the evening, choose Thursday, Friday or Saturday. During those times, a saxophonist plays on the observation deck. Important: book the Skip-the-Line-Tickets (you can do that here). Then, you can easily save 1-2 hours of waiting time!
• Visit the Statue of Liberty : The trip from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty is super-popular. To save yourself long waiting times, make sure you take the first ferry of the day. Here, you can find the best Statue of Liberty Cruises right now.
• Definitely take a boat tour , because seeing New York from the water is like being on vacation. Choices range from the free Staten Island Ferry or the NYC Ferry ($2.90 each way) to sailing tours (gorgeous) and the classic sightseeing tours that are included with all major New York passes.
• Walk along the High Line from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards .
• Visit Times Square in the evening – that’s when it’s at its most impressive.
• Relax in Central Park or Bryant Park .
• Plan a maximum of three attractions per day . After all, you don’t want any sightseeing stress.

New York is also really good for shopping. There are many small shopping spots and addresses, but also the big brands can often be found with flagship stores. If that’s not enough, you can go shopping in one of the outlets and flea markets of New York.

The best shopping areas in New York are Broadway, SoHo , Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. And, of course, 5th Avenue!

Avoid Times Square for shopping!

A real tourist trap are the stores around Times Square – they are not only overpriced, but also the quality is not right in most cases!

Visit a Broadway Show

New York is known for its many musicals and Broadway shows – most of which are performed in the Theatre District around Times Square. Here are our tips on the  best Broadway Shows in New York . If you already know which Broadway show you want to see, I recommend ordering the tickets in advance ( here ). If you’re still flexible, you can buy leftover tickets at TKTS in Times Square, for example.

Prominent comedian says COVID fees and credit card surcharges are no joke

Sebastian Maniscalco slammed two fees he encountered while eating at a restaurant last week.

The stand-up comedian took to social media saying a restaurant he dined at should get rid of the "COVID fee" he said it charged him. The fee was $3, according to Maniscalco. 

"I went to a restaurant last night, and I got the bill and they charged me a COVID fee," he said. "I asked the guy. I go, ‘What’s the COVID fee?’ He goes, ‘Yeah, well, we gotta wipe down the menus.’ Wipe down the menus? You’re charging $3 to wipe down your own menus? Before COVID, what, you just brought out the menu with spaghetti sauce on it?"

Maniscalco did not identify the restaurant by name or say where it was located.

Some dining establishments around the country started implementing dedicated COVID-related fees during the pandemic to help recoup additional expenses they incurred because of the virus. Some examples of things that restaurants used to COVID surcharges for included personal protective equipment and social distancing measures on top of sanitization, per the Washington Post.

But as the pandemic has wound down, some restaurants have kept COVID-related fees in place. Inflation and other things have factored into some doing so, according to reports.

The comedian also said in the video that he incurred a credit card surcharge to the tune of 3.5% during the same meal.

Restaurants and other businesses may subject customers to a small surcharge for swiping their credit card to foot the "processing" cost associated with that electronic payment method. They often fall in the 1-3% range .

"It’s a real bad look as a business. Absorb the fee. It’s called the cost of doing business," Maniscalco continued, adding that it "ain’t right" in a seeming reference to the name of his upcoming stand-up tour.

The comedian posted the video of him criticizing the two fees on several social media platforms. On Facebook, over 16,000 people reacted to it, while the clip wracked up over 50,000 views on X.

Maniscalco will start his "It Ain’t Right" comedy tour in July with a show in Norfolk, Virginia. He has had multiple comedy specials in the past, including two on Netflix.

He also holds the leading role in the Max series "Bookie."

Reliable paper-framed glasses are by far the most popular option for safely watching the total solar eclipse on Monday. But they’ve gotten more difficult to find in some places ahead of the event.

If you’ve checked everywhere — your local planetarium, public library and even online — fear not: There is still a way to watch the eclipse safely, using items around the house. Here are a few options.

Use your hands

Palms up, position one hand over the other at a 90-degree angle. Open your fingers slightly in a waffle pattern, and allow sunlight to stream through the spaces onto the ground, or another surface. During the eclipse, you will see a projection of the moon obscuring the surface of the sun.

This method works with anything with holes, such as a straw hat, a strainer, a cheese grater or even a perforated spoon. You will also notice this effect when light from the partially eclipsed sun streams through leaves on a tree.

Set up a cardstock screen

For this option, you need a couple of white index cards or two sheets of cardstock paper. First, punch a small hole in the middle of one of the cards using a thumbtack or a pin.

Then, facing away from the sun, allow light to stream through this pinhole. Position the second card underneath to function as a screen. Adjust the spacing between the two cards to make the projection of the sun larger or smaller.

Make a box projector

If you’re up for a bit of crafting, you can make a more sophisticated pinhole projector . Start with a cardboard box — empty cereal boxes are often used, but you can use a larger box, too. You’ll also need scissors, white paper, tape, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack.

Cut the piece of paper to fit the inside bottom of the cardboard box to act as a screen. Use tape to hold it in place.

On the top of the box, cut two rectangular holes on either side. (The middle should be left intact — you can use tape to secure this if needed.)

Tape a piece of aluminum foil over one of the rectangular cutouts. Punch a tiny hole in the middle of the foil with the tack or pin. The other cutout will serve as a view hole.

With your back to the sun, position the foil side of the box over your shoulder, letting light stream through the pinhole. An image of the sun will project onto the screen at the bottom of the box, which you can see through the view hole. A bigger box will create a bigger image.

Enjoy the show through any of these makeshift pinholes. And remember, during totality, you can view the sun directly with your naked eye. But you should stop looking at the sun as soon as it reappears.

Former Marine Corps Reservist Sentenced to 21 Months in Prison for Stealing, Forging and Distributing Hundreds of Fraudulent COVID-19 Vaccination Cards During the Pandemic

Earlier today, in federal court in Brooklyn, Jia Liu was sentenced by United States District Judge Diane Gujarati to 21 months in prison for conspiring to steal, forge and distribute fraudulent COVID-19 Vaccination Cards.  On June 9, 2023, co-defendant Steven Rodriguez, a Long Island nurse, was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment for his role in the same scheme.  Liu and Rodriguez pleaded guilty in April 2023 to conspiracies to defraud and obstruct the United States’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, announced the sentence.

“At the height of the COVID pandemic, Liu and Rodriguez brazenly fabricated vaccine cards and sold them for profit, thereby putting the safety of others at risk during this deadly health crisis” stated United States Attorney Peace.  “This prosecution demonstrates our Office’s ongoing commitment to holding accountable those who engaged in COVID-19 fraud.  These prison sentences should deter other lawbreakers who put their own interests above public health.”

Mr. Peace thanked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office, for their outstanding investigative work on the case.

According to court filings and facts presented at sentencing, in May 2021, Liu and Rodriguez conspired to steal, forge, sell and distribute COVID-19 Vaccination Cards to hundreds of unvaccinated persons.  In addition to the cards, Liu and Rodriguez also offered buyers and co-conspirators false entry into government immunization databases.   

Liu and Rodriguez went to great lengths to evade law enforcement and conceal the scheme.  Members of the scheme used code words such as “gift cards,” “Pokemon cards,” or “Cardi Bs” to refer to fraudulent COVID-19 Vaccine Cards.  Liu also instructed his co-conspirators to communicate by encrypted applications and hide payment records.  Liu and Rodriguez also disguised the source of mail items containing COVID-19 Vaccination Cards by omitting or using false sender names on envelopes. As Covid-19 raged and hundreds of thousands of Americans perished, Liu exploited the pandemic to enrich himself, and push his anti-vaccine agenda, messaging a co-conspirator: “f--- the vaccine”.

In addition, Liu specifically targeted the armed forces and their attempts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.  From approximately August 2021 or earlier, the defendant created and distributed false COVID-19 Vaccination Cards to members of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to help them evade its vaccination requirements.  Liu boasted to a co-conspirator on an encrypted messaging app: “you have no idea how many documents I have faked in my usmc (United States Marine Corps) career.”

The government’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam Amir with the assistance of Paralegal Specialist Sam Ronchetti.
