Travel money cards with the lowest fees

We look at seven travel money cards from the big banks and airlines..

travel money card next to model plane

Prepaid travel money cards are offered by major banks, airlines and foreign exchange retailers like Travelex. Before travelling overseas, you load money into the card account, which locks in the exchange rate for foreign currencies at that time.

You can then use the card for purchases and cash withdrawals just like a debit or credit card, usually wherever Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

You can reload money on-the-go via an app or website, and if the card is lost or stolen, it can be replaced (usually at no cost to you).

Prepaid travel money cards also give you assurance that you're not handing the details of your everyday banking account to merchants you're not familiar with, and they provide easy access to cash when you want some, says Peter Marshall, head of research at money comparison website Mozo .

CHOICE tip: Travel money cards are best for longer trips. They're usually not worth your while if you're only taking a short trip, as some have closure, cash out and inactivity fees.

Travel money card fees

A major difference between prepaid travel cards and debit or credit cards is their fees. Some costs aren't immediately apparent, such as hefty margins built into the exchange rates.

And although fees have come down since we looked at these cards two years ago, you still need to watch out for:

  • fees to load the card – either a percentage of the total or a flat fee
  • ATM withdrawal fees
  • a cross currency fee or margin when you use the card in a currency you haven't preloaded
  • further fees if you close the account or haven't used the card for a period of time.

Travel money card with the lowest fees and best exchange rate

  • A charge applies at non-Westpac and non-partner ATMs in Australia and overseas.
  • Best exchange rates for the US dollar, the Euro and GBP in our comparison.*
  • The only card that lets you preload the South African rand.

Other travel money cards

Next to the Westpac Worldwide Wallet, there are six other travel money cards available.

CommBank Travel Money Card

CommBank Travel Money Card (Visa)

Currencies : AUD, USD, NZD, EUR, GBP, SGD, THB, JPY, HKD, CAD, AED, VND, CNY.

  • Fee if you make a purchase with currencies not preloaded.
  • Fee for withdrawals at overseas ATMs.

Qantas Travel Money Card

Qantas Travel Money Card (Mastercard)

Travelex Money Card

Travelex Money Card (Mastercard)

Travelex is an international foreign exchange retailer. In Australia, it operates more than 140 stores at major airports and shopping centres, across CBDs and in the suburbs. It was the card with the best exchange rate for New Zealand dollars.*

Currencies : AUD, USD, NZD, EUR, GBP, SGD, THB, JPY, HKD, CAD.

Fees :

  • Load fee instore, but free via Travelex website or app.
  • Reload fee instore or via BPay, but free via Travelex website or app.
  • Closure fee and monthly inactivity fee (if not used for 12 months).

Travel Money Oz Currency Pass

Travel Money Oz Currency Pass (Mastercard)

The Travel Money Group is owned by Flight Centre and is a foreign exchange retailer.

  • Reloading the card via an online bank transfer or instore is free, but there's a fee if you reload via BPay, debit card or credit card.
  • Cash out (closure) fee.

Travel money card tips

  • Make sure the card allows the currencies you'll need, and also consider stopovers. For example, the South African rand is only supported by the Westpac card.
  • Try to load your card with the right currencies and amounts on days with good exchange rates.
  • Make sure you know how to reload your card if you run out of funds while overseas.
  • It may be more convenient to choose a card that has an app that can be linked to your bank account.
  • Avoid loading more money than you'll need as there may be fees and exchange rate margins to get the unused money back.
  • Remember to cancel the card once you're finished your trip, especially if it has inactivity fees.
  • Be mindful that you still may need a credit card, as travel money cards may not be accepted as security for hotels and car rental agencies.

Peace of mind

Absolutely simple to use and move funds in and out of Euros and Sterling, Easy to top up from our Commonwealth account and then move funds back to our accounts upon return to Australia. Great feeling of security and safety with immediate access to cancelling cards in the case of any emergency.

Hi Bryan, we're so happy to hear our Currency Pass made your travels a breeze! We hope you had an absolutely incredible trip, and we hope to hear all about it when you come back next time!

Service could be improved…

Not many of Travel money collection points around so fact they are local to me is great. Staff didn’t seem confident that there were any orders to collect let alone mine. Not ideal when you’re collecting cash that you already paid for. Also cash came in a heavily sticky taped envelope, not the travel money one. They also didn’t offer any assistance when i raised the issue about being given large notes. You get what you get when you order online???Service could have been better but were friendly enough.

Hi Amanda, thank you so much for your feedback, we appreciate every opportunity to grow and improve our services, and we hope the next time you visit we can display the growth and improvement you deserve!

I ordered $500USD on line

I ordered $500USD on line. It was ready on time, for pickup at the local shop, but it came as 5x$100USD notes. The staff person claimed that she was not allowed to change it into any other denominations. As she clearly had a draw full of USD in different denominations, I thought that was quite poor. She claimed that you get a better rate on line because you don't get to choose the denominations. I did not see that being articulated anywhere on the website. It may be buried in the terms and conditions, but it should be made obvious.

Hi John, we're so sorry for the experience you have had with us. We do show this on our Online FAQs: https://www.travelmoneyoz.com/frequently-asked-questions/order-online but we do actively try giving a mix of notes. Do you mind reaching out to us directly at [email protected] so that we can hear more about your visit and how we can improve for the future? We'd very much appreciate the opportunity to do better!

Traveled the world in 2023 using my travel money Oz bank card. Went to 29 countries and 44 destinations and the card never let me down.So easy to use and could also pull out cash at ATMs if needed. Went to Fiji and Thailand couple months after the world trip and the card worked like a charm in their countries. Although, Thailand most times wanted cash than using a bank card when purchasing items which was ok cause I always took a couple bucks on me just incase I lost the card.Easy to top up funds also from different accounts using money travel Oz phone app. Furthermore, the money travel Oz card automatically converts the currency in each country which made it so simple to use than having a bag full of different currencies.

Hi David, what a stunning review! We are so proud to have been a part of your journey around the world, and to have been a convenient and easy to use way for you to manage your money! We hope we can continue being a part of your future travels for many years to come!

Fantastic Experience

This was one of the smoothest, friendly and quick money conversion experiences I have ever had. I did go to the kiosk not long after it opened in the morning which meant I was the first customer. Saying that the wonderful agent who assisted me was fabulous. They were efficient, friendly and also very knowledgeable about the currency and country I was going to. By the end of the experience I was even more super excited about my trip.

Hi Robyn, what an incredible review! We are so proud of our team for delivering the stellar service and experience we strive for, and we'll be sure to pass on your amazing feedback on to the team, and we hope you have an absolutely unforgettable holiday!

When I tried to purchase USD online

When I tried to purchase USD online, have problems with the identity verification, after drivers licence/passport check, there's only Electoral roll option. However after sending through inquiry, they matched the exchange rate at the store, which is great. Hope Travel Money Oz will upgrade their identity verification process.

Hi Yuin, it's quite unfortunate timing for you, as we did just introduce a new verification method to our online ordering system just today! We're glad you were able to be looked after instore regardless, and we hope next time you try to order online you have a little more success with our new addition!

Very pleased with transaction- rate was good and time to pick up from entering the online order was phenomenal! - around 15 minutes! I had tried previously at another exchange and they gave a very poor rate for cash conversion and Travelex wanted a week to prepare the order which was far too long. Easy pick up - just showed driving licence. Highly recommend

Hi David, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed our same day FX Click and Collect system, (world first by the way!), and we were able to be the best option for your needs! We hope you enjoy every minute of your travels, and we can't wait to hear all about it!

Gotta be the place to get currency

Gotta be the place to get currency. The rates are really competative, I always get the best rates here at Bondi Beach. Jon is the guy to go to. Very proffesional, efficient and always cheerful. I wouldn't go anywhere else

Hi Roy, your review is the kind that we look forward to reading each day! We're so proud of Jon for delivering the kind of service that brings customers like you back every time, and we'll be sure to thank him for his dedication to a great customer experience!

Horrible experience

We have been in Europe for over a month and have been unable to access the app the whole time due to matinence and the website has been slow through the whole time. There is now Apple Pay nor payWave. We recently loaded money onto the card and it has taken it from our bank and never uploaded it to the card. We have made attempts to contact Tavel Oz and they have done little to nothing to rectify this and we are now without any money. Would not recommend at all.

Date of experience : 09 July 2024

Hi there, we're so sorry to hear about the troubles you've been having, and we'd love to assist you in getting them rectified! Do you mind reaching out to us directly at [email protected] so that we can get you back to enjoying your holiday?

Good customer service

I called every day the Parramatta branch to check on the Japanese yen rate for my trip to Japan. When I decided to drop by the branch, the staff recognised my name and gave me a good rate on the Yen so I rang my family members who are going with me to Japan and they also asked me to buy the Yen for them.

Date of experience : 13 June 2024

Hi Julie, we're so happy to hear we were able to get you, and your family, sorted with your Yen! If there is anything we can do to bump your review up to 5 stars for next time, feel free to email us at [email protected], we'd love the chance to improve!

Exceptionally fast service.

My main reason to use Travel Money Oz was the fact that the currencies (3 of them) were ready within minutes of me putting in the order. Whereas the other currency exchange agency in the area needed several days to get it ready.

Date of experience : 19 June 2024

Hi Wendy, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed our new (world first!) same day foreign exchange Click and Collect system! We know how stressful preparing to travel can be, who has time to wait 3 days for their cash to be ready? We hope you have a fantastic holiday, and we hope you come back and tell us all about it!

It was great to be able to order the currency on line and then go and pick it up. No waiting in line was the best part because there's usually quite a lengthy wait where I get the currency from

Great to see the option of currency exchange at Flight Centre....book a flight and buy foreign currency. The exchange rate is usually competitive and if you are a return customer will usually be looked after.

Hi Glenda, we're so happy to hear you were able to get sorted with flights and cash at the same time! If there was anything we could do to raise your review up to 5 stars for next time, feel free to email us at [email protected] and let us know!

Hi Lincoln, thanks for the feedback! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your visit with Michelle!

Poor customer service rendered card useless

I got this 2 days before departing Aust for NZ. I went to register online, but it wouldn't accept my details. Phoned and spoke to someone who confirmed my email address had been entered incorrectly by the kiosk person. It was supposed to be updated within 48-hours, but was not resolved by the time I departed. I tried to contact the company whilst overseas, but with no luck. I've not been able to top up the card from my bank account, so now paying endless conversion fees from my bank card (which I thankfully brought with me).

Date of experience : 22 June 2024

Hi Rachel, we would love to get this sorted with you, are you able to send our support team an email directly at [email protected]? We want to get you back to enjoying your holiday as quickly as we can!

Currency exchange

I had a fantastic experience at Flight Centre Money Oz Galleria. The gentleman assisting me was helpful and efficient. Made me feel like a valued customer ensuring me the best rate possible. We highly recommend this outlet for anyone needing currency services.

Date of experience : 24 June 2024

Hi Carmelina, we pride ourselves on excellent customer services, and competitive exchange rates, and we're so proud of the team at Galleria for delivering both to you! We hope you have an incredible holiday, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Costa Cruise

Hi. My experience with travel money oz was was great except I wasn't told that it doesn't work on cruises. That caused me great distress. I had to wait for a shore excursion to withdraw cash which cost me extra in fees. I could only get 500 euro out each transaction. If I had of known this I would have bought more cash and had less on the card. Otherwise it worked well. Kind regards Janine

Date of experience : 15 June 2024

Hi Janine, we truly are so sorry to hear our team didn't inform you of this, and we'll be sure to work with them to inform future customers better. We're glad other than this you had a fantastic trip, and we hope you can give us another chance in future!

Simple, easy

Simple, quick, straightforward purchase on some $SN. Definite improvement on the days gone by of the trials of getting travelers cheques

Travelex vs Travel Money Oz vs S Money

Travelex vs Travel Money Oz

Travelex, Travel Money Oz and S Money all allow Australians to buy currency online. But which one is the cheapest?

While S Money has the best exchange rates, it does have a service fee. This means that to find the cheapest option, you need to look at the total cost of the currency including all the fees.

You can either go to each site and get a quote with each company or use an exchange rate comparison table that includes not just exchange rates, but any service fee too.

While price is important, it's not the only difference between these 3 currency exchange services. Here is a better look at each option:

travel oz money rates

S Money is an online only currency exchange, so they don’t have any bricks and mortar stores. If you order online, you can pick up your currency in the CBD or have it delivered within 20k’s of the city for $19. They are the only money exchange that offer the same exchange rate seen on Google or XE but they do charge a service fee.

How S Money stacks up

S Money doesn't have any retail stores like Travelex or Travel Money Oz. While this helps them offer a better rate, it also means that you can't sell them currency, you can only buy currency. It also means that you have to order and pay for your currency online and can't pick up from the Airport like Travelex.

Online, all 3 companies offer 'click and collect. S Money and Travelex offer delivery unlike Travel Money Oz but with Travelex, you can pick up from Australia Post stores or the airport.

If you are in a hurry, S Money is quicker than Travelex and Travel Money Ozwith most orders delivered or ready for pick up the next day.

Travelex and Travel Money Oz have a much bigger range of currencies so if you are looking for Argentine Peso or Vietnamese Dong, they are a better option.

travel oz money rates

Travelex is the biggest foreign exchange company in the Australia. They have the biggest range of currencies and collection locations but they aren't aways the cheapest.

Travelex have many locations across Australia. You can order online and collect your currency at a store, an Australia Post office or even the airport. They also offer delivery for online orders.

How Travelex stacks up

Much like Coles and Woolworths, Travelex and Travel Money Oz have a near duopoly in Australia when it comes to currency exchange. So their exchange rates, fees, services and overall offering are very similar.

Compared to S Money, their exchange rates aren't as good but they don't charge a service fee . They have a bigger range of currencies and collection locations including the airport.

travel oz money rates

Travel Money Oz has dozens of outlets throughout every state in Australia. They are owned by the Flight Centre and have good, personal in-store service.

How Travel Money Oz stacks up

Travel Money Oz is very similar to Travelex. It has a large network of stores. They both allow you to order a large range of currencies online to collect in-store and both are very large reputable companies. Even their exchange rates are very similar. Online, the experience is almost identical.

Compared to S Money, the big difference is their stores. Travel Money Oz has a huge network of bricks and mortar stores where as S Money is purely online. This also means that S Money has better exchange rates and charge a service fee. S Money also offers delivery for online orders which Travel Money Oz is yet to roll out.

Travelex and Travel Money are incredibly similar in most aspects like exchange rates fees and services.

S Money is difference from both companies because they offer the real online exchange rate and don't charge an exchange rate margin. They do charge a service fee though.

All offer online services but S Money has no stores.

You can buy or sell a big range of currencies at Travel Money Oz and Travelex but at S Money you can only buy the most popular currencies like US dollars, euros, pounds and yen.

What is the best travel card to use in Iceland?

Avatar

Jhezelyn Finder

Hi Nathalie,

Thank you for your comment.

While we do not have a specific page for travel money to Iceland, you may want to compare some alternative travel money that you can possibly use in Iceland.

Most of the tourists to Iceland use credit cards and it is recommended to bring a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. You can check a range of credit cards for overseas spending .

Please make sure though to read the eligibility criteria, features, and details of the card, as well as the relevant PDS/ T&Cs of the card before making a decision and consider whether the product is right for you.

Regards, Jhezelyn

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Date of experience : July 22, 2024

Date of experience : July 09, 2024

Hi there, we're so sorry to hear about the troubles you've been having, and we'd love to assist you in getting them rectified! Do you mind reaching out to us directly at [email protected] so that we can get you back to enjoying your holiday?

Good customer service

I called every day the Parramatta branch to check on the Japanese yen rate for my trip to Japan. When I decided to drop by the branch, the staff recognised my name and gave me a good rate on the Yen so I rang my family members who are going with me to Japan and they also asked me to buy the Yen for them.

Date of experience : June 13, 2024

Hi Julie, we're so happy to hear we were able to get you, and your family, sorted with your Yen! If there is anything we can do to bump your review up to 5 stars for next time, feel free to email us at [email protected], we'd love the chance to improve!

Exceptionally fast service.

My main reason to use Travel Money Oz was the fact that the currencies (3 of them) were ready within minutes of me putting in the order. Whereas the other currency exchange agency in the area needed several days to get it ready.

Date of experience : June 19, 2024

Hi Wendy, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed our new (world first!) same day foreign exchange Click and Collect system!

Date of experience : June 22, 2024

Hi Rachel, we would love to get this sorted with you, are you able to send our support team an email directly at [email protected]? We want to get you back to enjoying your holiday as quickly as we can!

Currency exchange

I had a fantastic experience at Flight Centre Money Oz Galleria. The gentleman assisting me was helpful and efficient. Made me feel like a valued customer ensuring me the best rate possible. We highly recommend this outlet for anyone needing currency services.

Date of experience : June 24, 2024

Date of experience : June 15, 2024

Hi Janine, we truly are so sorry to hear our team didn't inform you of this, and we'll be sure to work with them to inform future customers better. We're glad other than this you had a fantastic trip, and we hope you can give us another chance in future!

Simple, easy

Make your money go further: These countries may be the best places to visit

  • The U.S. dollar has been especially strong lately, making traveling abroad generally a good deal for American tourists.
  • NetVoucherCodes analyzed 1-, 3- and 5-year exchange rate trends to find the best destinations for American travelers abroad based on current exchange rates and overall cost-effectiveness.
  • Here are some countries where the dollar has the most purchasing power.

The U.S. dollar has been especially strong lately, making traveling abroad generally a good deal for American tourists. However, not all currencies are equal when compared to the dollar.

NetVoucherCodes , a British site dedicated to helping users find online discounts, analyzed 1-, 3- and 5-year exchange rate trends to find the best destinations for American travelers abroad based on current exchange rates and overall cost-effectiveness as of the beginning of July

So, if you're looking to pinch every penny on your next vacation and maximize your spending power, here’s where they recommend visiting to get the most bang for your buck, ensuring a memorable and budget-friendly trip.

Don't waste your money: Traveling internationally? Here's how to save.

As of publishing time, $1 equals 156.49 Japanese yen.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

“Japan is possibly one of the most sought-after vacation destinations for Americans and now it’s become much more affordable to visit. Over the past year, the dollar has strengthened by 11.65% against the Japanese Yen making the country, that’s often seen as expensive to visit, now accessible to many Americans. With its unique culture, world famous food and endless activities, Japan will now become more popular than ever before,” according to NetVoucherCodes.

U.S. airlines are also boosting service to Japan, and competition among carriers can often mean better airfares as well.

As of publishing time, $1 equals 33.06 Turkish lira.

“The perfect time for Americans to visit the vibrant city of Istanbul with its blending of cultures and mouth-watering food. Take a romantic weekend trip to Cappadocia to experience a hot air balloon ride over rolling desert or head to the coast, just minutes away from the Greek Isles,” NetVoucherCodes said in their release.

Travelers can also take advantage of Turkish Airlines’ stopover program to visit Turkey on the way to another destination.

As of publishing time, $1 equals 48.25 Egyptian pounds.

“Egypt is one of the most sought after vacation destinations for travelers to soak in some winter sunshine and boasts some of the best historic landmarks in the world. The data reveals that now might be a good time to visit,” said NetVoucherCodes.

It’s certainly a place on many Americans’ travel bucket lists, and a favorable exchange rate could help make those dreams a reality.

As of publishing time, $1 equals 1,734.33 Malawian kwacha.

“One of the top safari-hotspots of Africa, Malawi sees a strong dollar against the Malawian Kwacha giving Americans a better value vacation. The country has 11 national parks and wildlife reserves making it one of the best places to see African animals on the planet. However, travelers are unlikely to see the benefit of a strong dollar when booking a safari from a U.S. provider, and may be best booking their own itinerary to see true savings,” NetVoucherCodes’ statement said.

Malawi is not often a top destination for American travelers, it’s one of the poorest countries in the world, but its natural beauty is unparalleled and under-appreciated.

1. Argentina

As of publishing time, $1 equals 923.50 Argentine pesos.

“The country has seen multiple instances of devaluing its currency due to economic issues so Americans looking for a cheap vacation where they can sample some of the best wine in the world and go on breathtaking hikes need look no further,” NetVoucherCodes’ analysis said.

Keep in mind that Argentina’s economy has a reputation for instability. Many merchants also accept U.S. dollars, but the exchange rates and bartering can be confusing.

According to NetVoucherCodes, now is also a good time to visit Britain and continental Europe, with the dollar still holding its own against the pound and the Euro.

Here’s NetVoucherCodes full top-10 list of countries where the dollar has the most purchasing power:

The Golden Rules of Affordable Travel

Panoramic view of a car with tourists on the gravel road in the wild savannah during beautiful bright sunset in...

Travel is, for many of us, a distinctly rewarding experience—yet it comes at a price. Sky-high flight costs , accommodation costs , and overpriced restaurants can make budgeting seem impossible, and suddenly, booking that trip quickly becomes daunting instead of exciting. While we can’t promise your dream getaway will ever be a bargain, our editors have picked up a few tips and tricks during their years of traveling for cutting costs. Travel is for making memories, so it is important to carefully plan your spending to make the most out of your trip. Here is how to stretch every penny with the golden rules of affordable travel our editors swear by.

Vietnam Mekong Delta Can Tho elevated view of city market

Visiting city markets can be one of the best ways to experience fresh, in-season produce, seafood, and local delicacies.

Talk to locals

Most of us tend to plan our trips in advance , with an ever-growing list of attractions and restaurants around the world we're eager to experience. But leave some space on your itinerary for spontaneity and get chatting with locals to find their favorite places. “Eat where the locals eat,” says Callie Thorpe , an international travel influencer, “These off-the-beaten-track kinds of places are often far more affordable with less inflated prices, and you can support a small local business.” Avoid eating out in high-pedestrian traffic areas, as these are usually more expensive and not as good. If you’re finding it hard to meet any locals, try asking around at your accommodation—“I always ask the front desk for tips,” Sarah Allard, Condé Nast Traveller UK ’s digital director tells us, “They are usually locals and have the best insider intel.”

Pack sensibly

Airlines have increasingly begun to overcharge on luggage, and there’s just no getting around it anymore. Instead, try to fit as much as you can into a carry-on bag. There are lots of tips and tricks when it comes to how to pack efficiently, so we asked the experts for packing tips to help maximize space on your next adventure . Most people agree that rolling your clothes to the smallest possible size is the way to go—this saves space and stops your clothes getting wrinkly. Using packing cubes is another great way to organize your luggage and help make sure you have the right amount of items for your trip.

Birthplace of Aphrodite Petra tou Romiou. Paphos District Cyprus.

Rumored to house the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Paphos District in Cyprus is an affordable vacation option known for its legendary beauty.

Don’t pay for airline seats

Similarly, airlines often ask travelers to pay for seat selections on flights. As nice as it is sitting next to a friend on a long flight, most of us tend to just plug in and watch movies, listen to podcasts, or read for the journey, so paying extra doesn’t make much of a difference. Save precious cash by allowing the airline to allocate you a seat and take lots of entertainment to distract you and stop you from getting bored.

Book flights strategically

There are lots of handy tips and hacks for finding cheaper flights if you know where to look. While many people believe that searching for flights in your browser’s incognito mode will help avoid cookies and prevent the airline from raising the price on your most-searched flight routes, however, this has recently been proven to be a myth ( according to Quartz ). We asked our favorite travel experts for reliable tips on how to find cheap flights , from price comparison sites and what dates, months, and times of day are best for booking affordable travel. Booking on Sundays, for example, can save you money. Being strategic about how you earn and spend airline points and miles can also go a long way—start with joining your favorite airlines' loyalty programs and figuring out which travel credit card is best for your spending habits.

Woman taking photo with smartphone of Jungfrau while riding in train

Opting for alternatives to air travel such as trains can allow travelers to take in great ground views and socialize with companions on top of helping them budget.

Travel during off-peak periods

Naturally, prices peak during the school holidays and summer months , when everyone wants to travel. Choose to travel during the off-season or shoulder season to get good value for your trips. The more strategic you are with your vacation times, the better the deal you’ll get—particularly for traditionally expensive trips, like safaris . “Seasonality should always be considered and prices compared,” advises Yellow Zebra Safaris . “November sees rates drop in Serengeti , but the 15th of November sees migration in the heart of the park, where there is also a huge concentration of cats and fewer tourists. It’s clever and good value and a great experience as the rains don’t tend to set in till December . Alternatively, by traveling to Tanzania in November, you're away from the crowds, and you can take advantage of areas where the migration herds have flattened the grasses, as these areas will now be in an ideal place for big cat sightings.”

Don’t overlook travel agents

Most of us tend to book our trips ourselves these days, but while many brick-and-mortar travel agents have disappeared from high streets, lots of online travel agents specialize in finding the best value trips for customers. “A lot of travel agents offer to beat any price for flight bookings,” Charlotte Davey, fashion editor at Condé Nast Traveller UK , tells us. “So, if you take in screenshots of the flights you want with the cheap price being advertised (the price that disappears as soon as you actually try to book) they will book the flight for under that price. I did this once when I was traveling over Asia and saved literally hundreds of pounds.”

How to Stay Healthy While Traveling, According to Flight Attendants

Shopping local for snacks and drinks is a great low-lift way to save money on vacation.

Think outside of the box with accommodations

Booking accommodations can prove tricky on a budget. Of course, Airbnb offers plenty of pocket-friendly choices , but if you’re looking to save cash it’s better to be choosy about the location of the accommodation—staying in the city center will always cost more than opting for somewhere on the outskirts or in a lesser-known neighborhood (just make sure there are good connections into the main hub areas). “Don't price yourself out of lovely Airbnbs with too many rooms—it's always worth messaging the owner and asking if they'll let you use fewer rooms than advertised for a discounted rate (especially for last-minute bookings),” Anna Prendergast , travel writer and editor, advises. “I've had homeowners from places like Lisbon and Nicaragua offer bigger properties for less than advertised.”

Other options include home shares or house swaps— Live Kindred is a members-only home-sharing community where users earn credits as they host and are then able to stay at other properties for free. Trusted House Sitters is another site where pet and home-owners offer their house up to travelers willing to look after their animals and property while they’re away.

“Eating out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner can add up,” says Callie. “Opting to do a supermarket trip to stock up on essentials and food to make sandwiches on beach days (even when staying at a hotel) can save so much money and allow for a special splurge for a bucket-list restaurant .” Most cities have lovely parks or green areas perfect for settling down for a lazy picnic lunch in between museum or gallery-hopping. The same applies to long travel journeys. “Pack your own sandwich and snacks for both short and long-haul flights, stopovers, and journeys,” Anna suggests, “Carbs and protein bars are always useful when you’re traveling in between meals.”

Seize the day with hotel breakfast

Even for those of us who aren't early birds or breakfast people, a quick, included meal can be one of the best ways to fuel up before a full day and avoid the temptation of a pricier option. “I’ve learned the hard way over time that spending a little bit more ahead of time can save you lots in the long run,” Condé Nast Traveler Destinations editor Shannon McMahon tells us, “and one place where this almost always rings true is choosing the hotel that includes breakfast. Starting your days with the ritual (even if it’s just a modest continental) saves you the pricey coffees and sit-down lunches.” And while hotel breakfasts get a bad rap for being bland and underwhelming, there are plenty of surprising gems out there.

Stick to one destination

As much as we love a multi-destination trip, the cost of flights and trains between countries racks up pretty quickly. Instead, focus on traveling slowly —choose one destination and really get under its skin. This way, you’ll be able to really discover where the locals hang out; the more affordable restaurants and bars, the under-the-radar galleries to visit, the neighborhoods that give you a feel for the destination—it’s better for the environment and for your wallet. “Picking one country versus trying to conquer lots in one trip will help save costs on flights and potentially visas,” says Yellow Zebra Safaris . “It also allows you to maximize your time instead of moving around from place to place.”

Do your research

There is no right answer to the debate between package and independent booking—it all depends on the vacation. Some destinations, such as Costa Brava or Sharm el Sheikh , thrive with all-inclusive packages, whereas a quick city break to Paris or Amsterdam may be better organized by yourself. On the one hand, independent bookings offer more flexibility, the control to avoid unnecessary add-ons, and no travel company fees. On the other, package bookings offer bulk savings for families , better financial protection, and no burden of price comparison sites. There are lots of factors to consider, and ultimately it comes down to finding the best option for the type of vacation you want to have.

Researching neighborhoods and restaurants frequented by locals ahead of time makes all the difference when vacation-planning.

Consider a travel pass

Particularly for longer trips, it is a good idea to invest in a travel pass. Daily, weekly, or monthly passes are much more cost-effective than single fares, and with no need to wait in line for ticket machines, they are also more convenient. Many cities now offer travel cards tailored to tourists, including quick access to all the popular areas, different modes of transport, and sometimes even airport transfers. If you’re city-hopping in Europe , a great option is the Interrail Pass , offering a range of rail routes across 33 countries. These passes can be limited to one country or include all and have options from as little as 3 individual journeys to 3 months of unlimited travel.

Avoid foreign transaction fees

Foreign transaction fees are the charges placed on card payments abroad for currency conversion. They are usually just a small percentage of the purchase, but for frequent travelers, they can quickly add up. Avoid these pesky charges by opening a credit card or bank account with low or even no foreign transaction fees. Monzo and Revolut are popular app-only banks which do not charge foreign fees, while Barclaycard and Natwest offer specific credit cards that cater for travel. Foreign ATMs often have the most extortionate charges, so if you plan to spend cash, make sure to exchange your currency at home.

There are plenty of affordable options to partake in stunning views, cultural events, and sightseeing when traveling, especially to great-value destinations like Lisbon.

Choose attractions wisely

The just-arrived buzz we often get when we begin vacationing often throws all thoughts of money out the window. This is when you are at risk of racking up unnecessary expenses, so it is important to plan ahead. The most famous gallery in the city may be tempting, but often—if you dig a little deeper—you will find plenty of cheaper (or even free) options available, showcasing work which is just as impressive. Check if a place you want to visit offers free admission in the evenings or on Sundays. Of course, some attractions are worth the extra pennies, so set aside some time to map out a balanced itinerary. Once you have chosen your main event, fill the rest of your day with budget-friendly activities, like hiking , sunbathing on a beach , or visiting a government-funded museum .

Visit cheaper destinations

While this may be stating the obvious, falling into the tourist trap of big-ticket places is one of the most common mistakes. One way to steer clear of this is flight-centric planning. Choosing your next vacation based on where offers the cheapest flights will prevent the shock of pricey air travel after settling on your destination. Affordable vacation options are neither few nor far—we did a little digging to find the countries where the US dollar goes the furthest based on current exchange rates and the results included fabulous destinations like Brazil, South Africa, and Vietnam. It’s important to remember that cheaper does not always equate to worse—it may simply mean it is yet undiscovered by the travel crowds. Often the lesser-known locations are the most beautiful. They offer idyllic, unspoiled nature , authentic cultural representations, and, most importantly, the chance to see impressive sights which are not overrun by tourists.

Biking can be one of the best ways to get around cities like Paris and Copenhagen.

Buy a local bottle of wine

There's no better way to take advantage of a hotel balcony than pairing the view with a glass or two. “The bars will always be there for the inevitable cocktail,” writes Charlie Hobbs, associate editor of Condé Nast Traveler , “but between a long day of walking and that post-sunset dinner, spare yourself the markup on a glass of vino and support the small liquor store that you pass on your way through town.” With the busy mix of souvenirs, meals, transportation, and ticketed events competing for our attention while traveling, purchasing a local bottle can prove to be one of the most satisfying and best-value purchases you make while on vacation.

Rent a bike

One of the expensive but inevitable costs when traveling is transport, so consider going back to basics with a bike. Seville , Paris , and Copenhagen are just some of the cities across Europe investing in cycling infrastructure, making riding a bike accessible to even the most inexperienced cyclists. Across 70+ European cities, Donkey Republic supplies classic and electric bike rental through their app technology with pay-as-you-go fees from as low as $5.20 per hour. Cycling as an alternative is not only kinder on your pockets but kinder on your health and the environment as well.

Make friends in many places

A nice perk to forming long-distance friendships with fellow travelers and locals is that you'll have a rolodex of cool people to visit and couches to crash on! Of course, be sure to return the favor and offer to host your new friends in return—or treat them to a meal or two. “One of my favorite parts about traveling is all the fantastic friends I've met along the way," writes Hannah Towey, associate editor at Condé Nast Traveler . "Not only does maintaining strong relationships make travel more affordable in the long run, but it also creates a much more rewarding travel experience."

As important as it is to stick to your budget plan, remember that you are traveling for a reason—there’s not much of a point in traveling only to stay home and avoid doing the things you’ve traveled for. “I only ever regret the things I didn't do, not the money I spent on doing it. Do the thing!” says Anna. Don’t restrict yourself too much, and make sure you're still able to enjoy your vacation while you're there.
