What is the best travel card to use in Iceland?

Avatar

Jhezelyn Finder

Hi Nathalie,

Thank you for your comment.

While we do not have a specific page for travel money to Iceland, you may want to compare some alternative travel money that you can possibly use in Iceland.

Most of the tourists to Iceland use credit cards and it is recommended to bring a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. You can check a range of credit cards for overseas spending .

Please make sure though to read the eligibility criteria, features, and details of the card, as well as the relevant PDS/ T&Cs of the card before making a decision and consider whether the product is right for you.

Regards, Jhezelyn

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. Compare Australian dollar travel money rates

Get the best Australian dollar exchange rate by comparing travel money deals from the UK's top foreign exchange providers

Best Australian dollar exchange rate

While it's not considered to be a major world currency like euros or US dollars, the Australian dollar is still widely traded on the global financial markets especially in commodities like minerals and metals where Australia is a major exporter. Australia's economy is considered to be very stable and you'll find that dollars are widely stocked and available in all reputable bureau de change here in the UK.

If you're travelling to Australia, it's important to shop around and compare currency suppliers to maximise your chances of getting a good deal. We can help you to find the best Australian dollar exchange rate by comparing a wide range of UK travel money suppliers who have Australian dollars in stock and ready to order online now. Our comparisons automatically factor in all costs and commission, so all you need to do is tell us how much you want to spend and we'll show you the top suppliers who fit the bill.

Compare before you buy

Some of the best travel money deals are only available when you buy online. By using a comparison site, you're more likely to see the full range of deals on offer and get the best rate.

Order online

Always place your order online, even if you plan to collect your currency in person. Most supermarkets and high street currency suppliers offer better exchange rates if you order online beforehand.

Combine orders

If you're travelling with others, consider placing one large currency order instead of buying individually. Many currency suppliers offer enhanced rates that improve as you order more.

The best Australian dollar exchange rate right now is 1.8937 from Travel FX . This is based on a comparison of 18 currency suppliers and assumes you were buying £750 worth of Australian dollars for home delivery.

The best Australian dollar exchange rates are usually offered by online travel money companies who have lower operating costs than traditional 'bricks and mortar' stores, and can therefore offer better currency deals than their high street counterparts.

For supermarkets and companies who sell travel money online and on the high street, it's generally cheaper to place your order online and collect it from the store rather than turning up out of the blue and ordering over the counter. Many stores set their 'walk-in' exchange rates lower than their online rates because they can. By ordering online you're guaranteed to get the online rate and you can collect your order from the store as usual.

Australian dollar rate trend

Over the past 30 days, the Australian dollar rate is up 0.53% from 1.8937 on 21 Mar to 1.9037 today. This means one pound will buy more Australian dollars today than it would have a month ago. Right now, £750 is worth approximately $1,427.78 which is $7.5 more than you'd have got on 21 Mar.

These are the average Australian dollar rates taken from our panel of UK travel money providers at the end of each day. You can explore this further on our British pound to Australian dollar currency chart .

Timing is key if you want to maximise your Australian dollars, but the best time to buy will depend on the current market conditions and your personal travel plans.

If you have a fixed travel date, you should start to monitor the Australian dollar rates as soon as possible in the period leading up to your departure so that you've got time to buy when the rate is looking favourable. For example, if the Australian dollar rate has been steadily increasing over several weeks or months, it could be a good time to buy while the rate is high.

Some people prefer to buy half of their Australian dollars as soon as they've booked their holiday, and the remaining half just before they depart. This can be a good way of maximising your holiday money if the exchange rate continues to rise after you've bought, but will also help to minimise your losses if the rate drops.

You could also consider signing up to our newsletter and we'll email the latest rates to you each month.

If you need your Australian dollars sooner and don't have time to wait for the rates to improve, you can still save money by comparing rates from a range of different providers before you buy. Online travel money suppliers usually have better Australian dollar rates than high street exchanges, but supermarkets are a good compromise if you want to collect your currency in person and still get a decent rate. Just remember to buy or reserve your Australian dollars first before you collect them from the store so you benefit from the supplier's better online rate.

Australian dollar banknotes and coins

One Australian dollar ($) can be subdivded into 100 cents (c).

There are five denominations of Australian dollar banknotes in circulation: $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100; and six coin denominations: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2.

As you'd expect, the Aussies have a plethora of nicknames for their currency. Most of the names refer to the bright colours of the banknotes; the pink 5-dollar note for example has at least 14 nicknames including 'fairy floss', 'pink snapper', 'prawn', 'piget' and 'rasher'.

In 2016, over 70,000 people signed a petition to officially rename the country's currency to 'dollarydoos' after the term was used in an iconic episode of The Simpsons. Sadly, the Reserve Bank of Australia declined the change, but you may still hear it used informally in conversations.

There's no evidence to suggest that you'll get a better deal if you buy your Australian dollars in Australia. While there may be better exchange rates available in some locations, your options for shopping around may be limited once you arrive, and there's no guarantee the exchange rates will be any better than they are in the UK.

Exchange rates aside, here are some other reasons to avoid buying your Australian dollars in Australia:

  • You may have to pay commission or other hidden fees to a currency exchange that you wouldn't have paid in the UK
  • Your bank may charge you a foreign transaction fee if you use it to buy Australian dollars when you're abroad
  • It can be harder to spot scammers and fraudulent currency exchanges in Australia

Lastly, it can be handy to have some cash on you when you arrive at your destination so you can pay for any immediate expenses like food, transport and tips. You don't want to be searching for the nearest currency exchange when you've just landed and you're desperate for a cup of tea - or a cocktail!

Tips for saving money while visiting Australia

Australia is generally considered to be an expensive holiday destination for British travellers due to the country's distance from the UK and the overall cost of living in Australia. Unsurprisingly, Sydney and Melbourne are ranked among the most expensive cities to visit, while Adelaide, Perth and Cairns can be more budget-friendly alternatives.

  • Research your accommodation: Branded hotels and resorts will always be more expensive than budget hotels and guest houses, especially in big cities and tourist hotspots. In rural areas, farm stays provide a unique opportunity to experience life on a working farm at a fraction of the cost of staying in a hotel. Or, if you're travelling on a shoestring, you'll find plenty of campgrounds and backpacker lodges dotted across the country which offer an inexpensive place to stay.
  • Use public transport: Busses and trams offer affordable travel around built-up areas, and ferries are part of the public transport system in waterfront cities such as Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Train fares can be expensive if you're travelling long distances, but light rail options are available at more affordable prices, particularly on specific routes like the Gold Coast Light Rail in Queensland.
  • Plan your itinerary: There's no shortage of free attractions and activities in Australia. From Bondi Beach in Syndney to Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast; Australia is famous for its stunning beaches, all of which are free to use and enjoy. Or, if sunbathing isn't your thing, you can explore Australia's pristine natural landscapes and diverse wildlife at any of Australia's national parks and botanical gardens. Popular options include the Royal National Park in New South Wales, Daintree Rainforest in Queensland and Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. In larger cities like Sydney and Melbourne, look out for free walking tours guided by local volunteers who share insights about the city's history, culture, and landmarks.
  • Find discount vouchers: Many tourist attractions and activities offer discount vouchers and codes that can save you money on entry fees and other perks. Look for vouchers online; sign up to newsletters and follow the social media accounts of places you're planning to visit.
  • Eat like a local: Cafes and bakeries offer reasonably-priced breakfast and lunch options such sandwiches and pastries if you're looking for a quick inexpensive meal. Many cafes and restaurants also offer lunchtime specials during the week where you can grab a discounted meal which usually includes a drink. Asian restaurants and takeout places, especially those serving Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese can be budget-friendly options for an evening meal. Look for local, family-owned establishments for authentic flavors at lower prices, and "BYO" restaurants which allow you to bring your own alcohol to save money on dining out.
  • Take cash: Using cash will help you to stick to a budget more easily than paying by card, and you'll also avoid foreign transaction fees. If you do take a card with you, look out for ATMs that are affiliated with your UK bank to avoid ATM fees, and if you're asked whether you want to pay in pounds or Australian dollars - always choose Australian dollars. If you pay in pounds the merchant can set their own exchange rate which won't be in your favour.

Choosing the right payment method

Sending money to a company you might not have heard of before can be unsettling. We routinely check all the companies that feature in our comparisons to make sure they meet our strict listing criteria, but it's still worth knowing how your money is protected in the unlikely event a company goes bust and you don't receive your order.

Bank transfer

Your money is not protected if you pay by bank transfer. If the company goes bust and you've paid by bank transfer, it's unlikely you'll get your money back. For this reason, we recommend you pay by debit or credit card wherever possible because they offer more financial protection.

Debit cards are the most popular payment method and they offer some financial protection. If you pay by debit card and the company goes bust, you can instruct your bank to make a chargeback request to recover your money from the company's bank. This isn't a legal right, and a refund isn't guaranteed, but if you make a chargeback request your bank is obliged to try and recover your money.

Credit card

Credit cards offer full financial protection, and your money is protected by law under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Section 75 states that your card issuer must refund you in full if you don't receive your order. Be aware that many credit cards charge a cash advance fee (typically around 3%) for buying currency, so you may have to weigh up the benefits of full financial protection with the extra cost of using a credit card.

Superb service at Karrinyup WA by Crystal

Superb service at Karrinyup WA by Crystal. Had to buy several currencies, small notes, varying amounts for kids heading overseas soon. They had exactly what I was after, and Crystal was so helpful explaining the different ways to pay, and (was not aware) that a credit card would count it as a cash advance, so would charge interest straight away. She could not have been any more friendly or helpful to me, and this branch will be my new go-to for any buy or sell foreign currency.

Whenever I travel, either here in Australia or overseas ( recent trip to the US) I always use my Travel Money Oz card. Easy to use, super reliable, hassle free transactions. Hi Louise, isn't Brett awesome! Thank you so much for your stunning review and your continued loyalty and support. We can't wait to see you again soon, and we hope you have a fantastic holiday season!

Extortionists

These 'ladies' charged over $250 more than the other currency exchange I used that same morning for the same amount of currency converted. Jokes on me for going near Travel Money Oz. When confronted about paying close to 8% more than I should have to use their service they brushed me off and said it was normal practice. Absolutely gobsmacked they can steal so much money for a sub-par service. No clear communication about their dirty exchange rate practices, beware!

I visited the Northland (Preston) store… Jack is the best

I visited the Northland (Preston) store today. Jack who helped me with the transaction was extremely helpful and honest. He went above and beyond his way to get me the best exchange rate eventhough it is a small sum. I have used Travel Money Oz a number of times and I am so pleased with Jack's performance and professionalism. Thanks Jack!

Riverlink Branch of Travel Money Oz

Staff at the Riverlink Branch of Travel Money Oz were able to take and exchange money from a trip to Vanuatu. Other institutions I had tried just simply turned me away without a glimmer of help. Staff member was super efficient in sorting my query and even offered advice for future transactions. Time positive as well. That's why I will continue to use Travel Money Oz.

Don’t go here, arrogant, rude staff

Just got off the representative for the Moonee ponds store, who was the most arrogant, discourteous, rude and unprofessional person. This store won’t last if that’s a reflection of quality of staff they have. Hopefully they did record the conversation for training purposes as this member of staff needs. Don’t go there!!!!!

I visited Travel Money Oz in Perth to exchange some currency. I was greeted by Marie, who was very friendly and helpful. She explained the different options and rates to me, and gave me some useful tips on how to save money and avoid fees. Marie was very professional and efficient, and made the whole process easy and stress-free. I highly recommend her and Travel Money Oz for anyone who needs to exchange currency or get a travel money card. Thank you, Marie!

Travelex vs Travel Money Oz vs S Money

Travelex vs Travel Money Oz

Travelex, Travel Money Oz and S Money all allow Australians to buy currency online. But which one is the cheapest?

While S Money has the best exchange rates, it does have a service fee. This means that to find the cheapest option, you need to look at the total cost of the currency including all the fees.

You can either go to each site and get a quote with each company or use an exchange rate comparison table that includes not just exchange rates, but any service fee too.

While price is important, it's not the only difference between these 3 currency exchange services. Here is a better look at each option:

travel oz money rates

S Money is an online only currency exchange, so they don’t have any bricks and mortar stores. If you order online, you can pick up your currency in the CBD or have it delivered within 20k’s of the city for $19. They are the only money exchange that offer the same exchange rate seen on Google or XE but they do charge a service fee.

How S Money stacks up

S Money doesn't have any retail stores like Travelex or Travel Money Oz. While this helps them offer a better rate, it also means that you can't sell them currency, you can only buy currency. It also means that you have to order and pay for your currency online and can't pick up from the Airport like Travelex.

Online, all 3 companies offer 'click and collect. S Money and Travelex offer delivery unlike Travel Money Oz but with Travelex, you can pick up from Australia Post stores or the airport.

If you are in a hurry, S Money is quicker than Travelex and Travel Money Ozwith most orders delivered or ready for pick up the next day.

Travelex and Travel Money Oz have a much bigger range of currencies so if you are looking for Argentine Peso or Vietnamese Dong, they are a better option.

Travelex is the biggest foreign exchange company in the Australia. They have the biggest range of currencies and collection locations but they aren't aways the cheapest.

Travelex have many locations across Australia. You can order online and collect your currency at a store, an Australia Post office or even the airport. They also offer delivery for online orders.

How Travelex stacks up

Much like Coles and Woolworths, Travelex and Travel Money Oz have a near duopoly in Australia when it comes to currency exchange. So their exchange rates, fees, services and overall offering are very similar.

Compared to S Money, their exchange rates aren't as good but they don't charge a service fee . They have a bigger range of currencies and collection locations including the airport.

Travel Money Oz has dozens of outlets throughout every state in Australia. They are owned by the Flight Centre and have good, personal in-store service.

How Travel Money Oz stacks up

Travel Money Oz is very similar to Travelex. It has a large network of stores. They both allow you to order a large range of currencies online to collect in-store and both are very large reputable companies. Even their exchange rates are very similar. Online, the experience is almost identical.

Compared to S Money, the big difference is their stores. Travel Money Oz has a huge network of bricks and mortar stores where as S Money is purely online. This also means that S Money has better exchange rates and charge a service fee. S Money also offers delivery for online orders which Travel Money Oz is yet to roll out.

Travelex and Travel Money are incredibly similar in most aspects like exchange rates fees and services.

S Money is difference from both companies because they offer the real online exchange rate and don't charge an exchange rate margin. They do charge a service fee though.

All offer online services but S Money has no stores.

You can buy or sell a big range of currencies at Travel Money Oz and Travelex but at S Money you can only buy the most popular currencies like US dollars, euros, pounds and yen.
