Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Pakistan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Pakistan High Commission in London or nearest Pakistani consulate .

COVID-19 rules

Travel to pakistan .

There are no COVID-19 vaccination requirements for travellers entering Pakistan.

On 3 January, owing to a rising number of cases in some countries, the Government of Pakistan announced that 2% of passengers arriving on international flights will be randomly selected and tested for COVID-19. Anyone who tests positive will be advised to self-isolate for five days.

Leaving Pakistan

Do not travel to the airport if you have COVID-19 symptoms. You may be thermal scanned or asked to a take COVID-19 rapid antigen test. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you may be:

  • prevented from flying
  • asked to self-isolate for 5 days
  • referred to a medical facility

Public activities

There are no COVID-19 restrictions on public activities. Wearing a face mask in public is encouraged.

Testing positive for COVID-19 in Pakistan

Take a test if you have symptoms or if you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

If you test positive, you must self-isolate for 5 days. After that, you should then wear a face mask for 5 days.

Passport validity requirements

To avoid problems at immigration, make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your visa application.

Contact Pakistan’s High Commission in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet this requirement.

Visa requirements

You will need a visa to enter or travel through Pakistan. For information on how to apply, see the Government of Pakistan’s online visa information .

Visas for journalists often have extra travel restrictions. Follow the terms of your visa, or you could be fined or detained.

Returning to the UK

You must have a valid visa, a Pakistani national identity card or a valid Pakistani passport to leave.

If you are travelling on a British passport and your visa has expired, you may not be allowed to board your flight unless you have a visa extension or an exit visa. Contact the Ministry of Interior or see the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports for information on visa extensions and exit visas.

Citizens of Pakistan overseas

If you hold a valid National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) or Smart National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (SNICOP) you can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay for an unlimited period. For more information see the website of Pakistan’s High Commission in the UK .

Travelling with children

If you’re travelling with a child as a single parent or are not the child’s parent, you may need to provide documentary evidence of parental responsibility before leaving Pakistan. This is particularly likely if the child is of Pakistani origin.

Travelling through Pakistan

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) advises against travel to most of the Pakistan-Afghanistan and Pakistan-Iran border areas. FCDO advises against all travel to Afghanistan and Iran.

Pakistan-Afghanistan border

All borders with Afghanistan can close at short notice. There has been overcrowding and violence at open border crossings.

The Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan is open to people with valid passports and Pakistan visas. You can apply for a visa on the Ministry of Interior website .

Illegal entry to Pakistan is a serious offence. If you cross from Afghanistan without the correct documentation you may be detained or deported. If you do enter Pakistan illegally, you will not be able to travel onward from Pakistan.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Pakistan guide .

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

  • proof of polio vaccination
  • a yellow fever vaccination certificate

Health screening (other than COVID-19)

Due to recent cases of mpox (monkeypox) in 2023 there may be enhanced screening and preventative measures when you enter Pakistan.

Read more about mpox on TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Pakistan . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Alcohol and pork

Importing alcohol or pork products is illegal. You could be detained if you try to import them.

National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis

A Comprehensive Guide on NICOP – National ID Card for Overseas Pakistanis

Home » Laws & Taxes » A Comprehensive Guide on NICOP – National ID Card for Overseas Pakistanis

There are certain documents that are deemed mandatory for every Pakistani citizen, such as National Identity Card (NIC), Driver’s License (in case you drive), Passport (in case you want to travel to another country), and the necessary legal documentation if you own a vehicle or movable or immovable property. However, if you plan to move or work as an expat overseas, then you will need a National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis.

What is NICOP?

NICOP is issued to Pakistanis living abroad

Wondering what is NICOP? As the name suggests, NICOP ( National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis ) is an identity card that is exclusively issued to Pakistani citizens who are planning to move or are already working/living abroad. Moreover, if a Pakistani citizen also has a nationality of some other country, then they only need to have a NICOP to travel to Pakistan whenever they want without needing a visa.

NICOP can also be applied for children who are born abroad, but in such cases, the children’s passport number is a mandatory requirement, which can be obtained from a Pakistani embassy in your country of stay.

Validity of NICOP

Every National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis that gets issues carries an expiry date with it, clearly mentioned on the card itself. However, the validity of NADRA NICOP may vary from person to person. In case you are applying for a NICOP for a minor, then the NICOP is going to be valid either for 10 years or until that person reaches 18 years of age.

How to Apply for NICOP?

Ways to Apply for NICOP

There are two main ways to apply for a National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis. You can either visit a NADRA Registration Centre (NRC) or Mega Centre in your city or apply online at NADRA’s web portal.

Applying Through NADRA Centres

Here’s what you need to know when applying for a NICOP through a NADRA Registration Centre. The following is a summarised view of the procedure:

  • Upon visiting the NRC, get a token from the counter
  • Wait for your token number to be called out
  • They will click your pic at the booth
  • They will fill your form and enter the data in their system as per the information provided by you. Once done, you will be asked to review and verify the information
  • The next part is getting the form attested. Once you have it attested from a gazette government officer, you will be required to submit it to the NRC.

Note: You can ask a blood relative to accompany you while you are applying for NICOP since their biometrics can be used as verification instead of getting your form attested by a government officer.

In order to find your closest NADRA Registration Centre, you can always visit their website. However, if you reside in Karachi, then here are the addresses for the three Mega Centres located in the city that remain open 24 hours, seven days a week.

NADRA Mega Centre (DHA Karachi):

Address: UC Office, Old KDA Building, Phase 1, Defence Housing Authority

NADRA Mega Centre (North Nazimabad, Karachi)

Address: Block L, North Nazimabad Town

NADRA Mega Centre (SITE Industrial Area, Karachi)

Address: Estate Avenue, SITE Industrial Area, Karachi

Applying at NADRA’s Online Portal

For the convenience of locals as well as Pakistani citizens living abroad, the government of Pakistan has launched an online portal of NADRA. The online portal can be used to apply for a National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) online.

Whether you are already an identity card holder or a new applicant, you can easily apply online at the portal. Here’s the step-by-step process to apply for a NICOP online:

  • First of all, have your photographs, supporting documents, and Debit/Credit Card ready.
  • Select the option of ‘Identity Holder’ if you are already an identity holder or ‘No Previous Identity’ if you are a new applicant
  • You will be asked to choose your country of stay and create a 4-digit smart card pin (the same thing we do for our ATM cards)
  • Submit the information as per the requirements along with a scanned copy of your recent passport sized photograph
  • After you have entered your Credit/Debit Card number, you will be redirected to a screen where the status of your payment will be confirmed. This is the final step of the process, after which your card will be delivered to you in a few days
  • Tracking of NADRA NICOP is also available. Moreover, you will also be notified via email and SMS about the status of your card

Note: The form on the website is also available in the Urdu language for better understanding.

Additional Information

All applicants must thoroughly review all the submitted information. In case any error is found in the data, it can be corrected manually on the printed form. Capturing the fingerprints of their four fingers (as shown on screen) and submitting them is among key NICOP requirements to complete the application process.

Time Required to Submit An Application for NICOP Online

It requires a lesser amount of time and effort to apply for a National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis online as compared to going to the NRC. Please take a look at the chart below to get a better understanding of the time required for every step involved in the process of applying for a NICOP:

NICOP Fee Details:

Whether you are a new applicant or want to modify or edit data, payment at the beginning of the process is one of the important NICOP requirements. One more thing to bear in mind here is that countries around the world are divided into two zones by the government of Pakistan ( please refer to NADRA’s official website to fetch complete details regarding the zonal division of countries ). The fee structure when applying for NICOP may also vary for the two zones.

NICOP Fee For ‘Zone A’ Countries

Nicop fee for ‘zone b’ countries, fee for modification in age, fee for delivery to applicant’s address, nicop delivery time (physical and online application).

The delivery time for a NADRA NICOP varies based on how you applied for it. Please have a look below to get an idea about when you can expect your NICOP to be delivered:

Through NRC

  • Normal – 30 days
  • Urgent – 15 days
  • Fast Track – 7 Days ( Priority at NRCs for immediate processing with executive fee charges )

Through Online Application

  • Processing – 7 days
  • Local Shipping in Pakistan – 2 days
  • International Shipping – 5 Days

You now know all the necessary details to apply for a NICOP and the finances involved in the entire process. The application processes for CNIC and NICOP have been now simplified than before, thanks to the recent improvements and digitization of NADRA’s system .

Hi I got nicop long time back ,bec was not aware that pakistan and russia not have dual citizenship arrangment and applied. What shall i do i dont want to surrender my pakistan citizenship and apply for poc can i keep my nicop or apply for cancellation please advise. Thx in Advance

Dear Mr.Faisal,

If Russia does not allow dual citizenship and you wish to have the Russian Citizenship, then you will have to surrender Pakistani citizenship. You cannot keep Pakistani Passport. But, in fact, you are not leaving Pakistani nationality. The NADRA of Pakistan gives you either NICOP or the POC (Pakistan Origin Card). These cards are actually serving as a passport and you don’t need any visa for entering into Pakistan from abroad.

In future, you can leave Russian citizenship at anytime and you can reside/live in Pakistan permanently. Then, you will get again the Pakistani citizenship and passport.

However, you can have further discussions with your those friends who are also having Russian citizenship. You will get fruitful suggestions from these friends.

. Best regards. PakGuide

My NICOP has a Pakistani address in both the Present and Permanent addresses. Is that ok? Does that still make it valid? I’m a US citizen too.

Dear Mr.Gul Ahad,

In Pakistan, if your spouse or any of your blood-relative has a “present address” on their CNIC, you can also use this address both for “present” as well as “permanent” address on your NICOP. It is quite valid.

With best regards, PakGuide

Thank you for your very prompt reply. Just one more query My NICOP id no. Is the same as the one on my CNIC. There is no change in that. Is that how it is? They don’t assign you a new no. ?

We can say that NICOP is nearly a duplicate of CNIC. Purpose of CNIC is to be used within Pakistan, whereas NICOP is the identity card to be used whenever you are out of country or you wish to travel Pakistan. You know that you don’t need Pakistan’s visa on the basis of NICOP. Therefore, the numbers of CNIC and NICOP are same.

With best wishes, PakGuide

Thank you so much!

Welcome……

Hi, my wife has got a NIC issued from Canberra, Australia. Does she need to apply for NICOP too, to be able to travel to Pakistan or NIC would suffice?

Dear Mr.Muhammad Syed,

As you are aware, valid Pakistani Passport or NICOP is enough to travel to Pakistan. Although, the CNIC or SNIC (Smart NIC) are not considered as NICOP, it seems better for you to consult your travel agents. If they suggest for NICOP, it will not be difficult for you to apply for NICOP. However, your travel agents may possibly adopt for you some other easy ways in light of their experience.

Best regards. PakGuide

Sir mere wife ka cnic banana he jabke us ka birth certificate bhi nahe bana hwa or na b.form

Dear Mr.Muhammad Rehman,

Aap apnay original CNIC aur Nikah-nama kay saath NADRA Centre jaen aur wife ko bhi saath lay jaen. Agar ho sakay tau wife kay education certificates bhi lay kar jaen. Ziada imkaan yehi hay keh NADRA walay aap say koi Halaf-nama waghera lay ker aap ki wife ka CNIC bana daingay.

Regards. PakGuide

A.A Sir what is the difference in Zone A and Zone B?

Dear Mr.Waqas Sharif,

W.A.S. In respect of Fee-Structure (or Fee-Detail), both Zone-A and Zone-B are just the lists of countries. As there are different laws or the rates of their currencies, these countries are divided into two lists or Zones, just for the convenience of people. Otherwise, there is no big difference between them.

Best Regards. PakGuide

is it possible to change my signature on id card.

Dear Mr.Zeeshan,

Yes, it is possible to change your signature. Take your original CNIC to NADRA Centre for this purpose.

Regards, PakGuide

Hi sir my nicop is missing out I need a expire n issue date Bata den

Dear Mr.Nabeel,

Your NICOP’s record is maintained by NADRA and we are not in a position to tell the card’s “expiry date” and “issue date.” You will have no problem if you please contact NADRA, online or personally.

What is NICOP?

Dear Mr.Asad,

NICOP is actually the CNIC issued to Pakistanis living abroad.

Pakistan Travel Advisory

Travel advisory june 23, 2023, pakistan - level 3: reconsider travel.

Reissued with updates to health information.

Reconsider travel to Pakistan due to  terrorism . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Do not travel to:

  • Balochistan province and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, including the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), due to  terrorism  and  kidnapping .
  • The immediate vicinity of the India-Pakistan border and the Line of Control due to  terrorism  and  the potential for armed conflict .

Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue to plot attacks in Pakistan. Terrorism and ongoing violence by extremist elements have led to indiscriminate attacks on civilian, as well as local military and police, targets. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, universities, tourist locations, schools, hospitals, places of worship, and government facilities. Terrorists have targeted U.S. diplomats and diplomatic facilities in the past.

Terrorist attacks continue across Pakistan, with most occurring in Balochistan and KP, including the former FATA. Large-scale terrorist attacks have resulted in numerous casualties.

Pakistan’s security environment remains fluid sometimes changing with little or no notice. There are greater security resources and infrastructure in the major cities, particularly Islamabad, and security forces in these areas may be more readily able to respond to an emergency compared to other areas of the country. While threats still exist, terrorist attacks occur less frequently in major urban areas than other parts of Pakistan.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Pakistan due to the security environment. Travel by U.S. government personnel within Pakistan is restricted, and additional restrictions on movements by U.S. government personnel outside of U.S. diplomatic facilities may occur at any time, depending on local circumstances and security conditions, which can change suddenly.

The U.S. Consulate General in Peshawar is unable to provide any consular services to U.S. citizens.

Read the country information page for additional information on travel to Pakistan.

If you decide to travel to Pakistan:

  • Visit our website for Travel to High-Risk Areas .
  • Remain aware of your surroundings and local events.
  • Vary travel routes and timing, especially for routine trips.
  • Be cognizant of your surroundings, particularly around public markets, restaurants, government and military institutions, and other locations.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program ( STEP ) to receive security alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter .
  • Review the Country Security Report for Pakistan.
  • U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergencies. Review the Traveler’s Checklist .

Balochistan Province – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Do not travel to Balochistan province. Active terrorist groups, including an active separatist movement, have conducted deadly terrorist attacks against civilians, religious minorities, government offices, and security forces.

Visit our website for  Travel to High-Risk Areas .

KP Province, including the former FATA – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Do not travel to KP province, which includes the former FATA. Active terrorist and insurgent groups routinely conduct attacks against civilians, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government offices, and security forces. These groups historically have not discriminated between government officials and civilians. Assassination and kidnapping attempts are common, including the targeting of polio eradication teams and Government of Pakistan security service (police and military) personnel.

Vicinity of Line of Control – Level 4: Do Not Travel

Do not travel to the India-Pakistan border, including the Line of Control. Militant groups are known to operate in the area. India and Pakistan maintain a strong military presence on both sides of the border. The only official Pakistan-India border crossing point for persons who are not citizens of India or Pakistan is in the province of Punjab between Wagah, Pakistan, and Atari, India. Travelers are advised to confirm the status of the border crossing prior to commencing travel. An Indian visa is required to enter India, and no visa services are available at the border.

The list is based on potential risks, including crime, war, terrorism, disease, weather conditions, natural disasters, and other threats to visitor safety. The countries newly added to the list are Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Iran, Sudan, Lebanon, Belarus, and the Palestinian territories. These destinations are currently involved in significant conflicts.

Additionally, the foreign office has issued a red list. The countries on the red list represent regions where travel should be avoided 'unless absolutely essential.' The list also includes Pakistan.

Pakistan witnessed 1,524 violence-related fatalities and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations in 2023, Pakistan news website Dawn said in a report. The report noted that total fatalities, both civilians and outlaws, reached a six-year peak, surpassing the numbers recorded in 2018 and marking the highest figure since 2017.

The provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan emerged as the main focal points of violence, comprising more than 90% of total fatalities and 84% of attacks, which encompassed incidents ranging from terrorism to security force operations.

Furthermore, there was a disturbing increase in sectarian violence. During 2023, acts of terrorism targeting religious communities and their places of worship led to the tragic loss of 203 lives. Sikh pilgrims to travel to hassanabdal from lahore on train.

nicop travel to pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Following the upgradation of Hassanabdal Railway Station, the relevant authorities have decided to bring all Sikh pilgrims from Lahore to their holy city by train to celebrate Baisakhi on Saturday (today).

The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has issued 2,843 visas to Sikh pilgrims who would participate in the annual festival scheduled from April 13-22.

{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)" width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative" src="https://www.dawn.com/news/card/1804010" sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

After entering through Wagah border, the pilgrims will be hosted by the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) which has hired a train from the Pakistan Railways to bring them directly to Hassanabdal.

Taking to Dawn , ETPB Chairman Arshad Farid Khan said the board had completed all arrangements for the Baisakhi Mela, and for the first time pilgrims coming from India would use rail transport instead of buses.

“This will make the journey more safe and comfortable for the guests,” Mr Khan said, adding that the ‘technical branch’ of the ETPB had renovated accommodations and other facilities in Hassanabdal.

More than 2,800 visas issued to Indians wanting to participate in Baisakhi festival

It is expected that around 10,000 Sikh pilgrims will converge on Punja Sahib shrine in Hassanabdal where they will celebrate Baisakhi festival. The pilgrims will also be coming from the United Kingdom, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand and from different cities of Pakistan.

All arrangements, including accommodation, security, transport and medical needs, for the pilgrims are being managed by the ETPB.

{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)" width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative" src="https://www.dawn.com/news/card/1801926" sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

The Indian pilgrims will be housed in hostels managed by the board while those from other countries will stay in various colleges and schools.

Baisakhimarks the first day of the month of Vaisakh in the local calendar. This year it will be celebrated on April. It is not only the spring festival in the region but also marks the founding anniversary of ‘Khalsa’.

Baisakhi is also the formal founding day of Sikhism as established by Guru Gobind Singh — the 10th Guru of the Sikhs.

During their stay, pilgrims would visit Gurdwara Punja Sahib, Gurdwara Nankana Sahib and Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib.

Those from India will also visit Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Sucha Sauda in Sheikhupura district, Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur, Gurdwara Rori Sahib, Gujaranwala and Gurdwara Dera Sahib Lahore, before departing from Wagah border. However, those arriving from other countries can alter their schedules.

The Sikh pilgrims from India visit Pakistan to celebrate the birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak in November, Baisakhi in April, Kartarpur Sahib as well as the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh in June and July. Many arrive at Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore They also visit Pakistan to observe the death anniversary of Sikh Guru Arjun Dev in June and Saka Nankana Sahib in February.

Visas are issued to the pilgrims from India under the framework of the Pakistan-India Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974.
