Introduction.

If your GFCI trips, don’t worry — it’s just doing its job. Let's find the source of the trip.

First Steps

Regular maintenance.

It's important to perform regular fridge maintenance before trying these fixes. Your appliance should last for at least 10-15 years before needing replacement, so keep it running well with these tips .

Safety Note: Power Down Fridge Before removing and replacing or continuity testing electrical components, power down the fridge. This will prevent damage to the components and prevent you from being electrocuted. Still, some electrical components — like capacitors — will store their charge and should not be tampered with. If the fridge is pulled away from the wall, or if the power switch is easily accessible, remove the plug. Otherwise, find the fridge’s circuit breaker in your breaker box and turn the circuit off. Verify your fridge has lost power by opening the doors and seeing if the fridge lights turn on.
Safety Note: Sharp Sheet Metal When working underneath the fridge, consider wearing gloves to avoid cuts from the sharp sheet metal. The sheet metal is the thin structural metal where components mount. While wearing gloves may make work more challenging, it’s worth protecting yourself.

Reset Power

When refrigerators experience temporary power outages, they may enter a safe mode. The safe mode protects the fridge's internal components from electrical overloading. You'll have to reset the power to your fridge.

  • Unplug your refrigerator. If the plug is too hard to reach, switch the circuit breaker off.
  • Wait 5 minutes before returning power to the fridge.
  • Once power is back, open your freezer and push the light switch 3 times to trigger a cooling cycle.
  • Monitor temperature over the next 24 hours.

GFCIs are sensitive to environmental changes and may result in nuisance trips. You may see more nuisance trips during hot-weather months.

  • Reset your GFCI , and power to the fridge.

Faulty Power Cord

One common source of trouble with fridges is the power cord.

  • Unplug the cord and give it a thorough inspection.
  • Damage to the cord looks like worn-out insulation, kinks, or bite marks. If you notice any of these problems, replace your current power cord with a brand-new one.
  • Next, look at the power prongs.
  • If they are bent or rusted, replace the cord. If they seem fine, plug the appliance into the outlet and turn it on.
  • Plug in another device, like a lamp or clock, to test the outlet.

Faulty Power Outlet

If your refrigerator is plugged into a power strip, unplug it and remove the cover on the power strip.

  • Look for any blackened or burned spots on the wires, and replace them if found.

Ice Maker Malfunctioning

The ice maker draws power upon startup, but not normally enough to cause a trip. However, if your water line to the fridge is disconnected and the fridge attempts to start an ice cycle, the GFCI may trip.

  • If there's no water supply to the fridge, disable the ice maker.
  • If you regularly make ice, verify that your water line is not blocked or frozen, as this could also be the cause of a trip.
  • If you need a replacement ice maker assembly, Refrigerator Ice Makers

Not Running a Dedicated Circuit

This means that while a residential kitchen refrigerator does not need to be on a dedicated circuit, using a dedicated circuit is certainly a good idea. Check your breaker panel with — or without — a circuit finder , or consult an electrician to inspect your home's wiring.

Snubber Not Installed

A snubber can be installed to reduce turn-on/turn-off voltage spikes. If nuisance tripping is the only issue, then adding a snubber may fix this issue. Consult an electrician.

Faulty GFCI Outlet

GFCI outlets generally have lives of about 7-10 years and may fail in 5 years. Test your outlet monthly.

  • In the event of continuous tripping, replace the GFCI outlet.
  • Call an electrician, or cut power to the circuit, then test that the circuit is dead.
  • Transfer wires from one unit to the other.

Faulty Circuit Breaker

The circuit breaker is responsible for regulating the electrical current in your home. When your refrigerator is tripping a GFCI outlet, the corresponding breaker or outlet might be at fault.

  • Try replacing the breaker in the box with one that’s rated for GFCI.
  • If you have a dedicated circuit that operates the refrigerator only, removing the GFCI outlet and replacing it with a standard outlet will solve it.
  • Consult an electrician if you are unsure about the electrical testing procedures.

GFCI Wired Incorrectly

Older fridges might not get along with GFCIs as well as newer fridges. If your fridge's receptacle is wired to the load side of the outlet instead of the line side, you may be experiencing nuisance trips.

  • View this re-wiring video or this video and consult an electrician if unsure of the procedure.

Overloading Circuit

If your GFCI is tripping often, it’s possible that you’re plugged into an overloaded circuit. If unchecked, this circuit could lead to a fire.

  • If you’ve got any other major home appliances or electronics plugged into the same circuit as your fridge, relocate them to another outlet before calling an electrician.
  • If your home refrigerator is tripping your circuit breaker, and can't run a new outlet, then move the fridge to an alternative power outlet.
  • Verify that the breaker isn't tripping.
  • If it trips in the alternative power outlet, call an electrician. They will help you run a new dedicated circuit for the fridge.

Neutral-Ground Short

A short is usually what causes the GFCI to trip, and if there is a neutral-ground short, the GFCI is doing its job.

  • If your fridge trips once, and then constantly, test the plug to see if there's continuity between ground and hot or neutral.
  • If there is a short, follow the circuit with a multimeter and figure out what component is responsible. Test each component for continuity to ground. A short looks like 0Ω to the ground.
  • This will most likely be the compressor but may be the defrost heater or any other component.

Ground Fault

A ground fault occurs when electricity is sent through a different path than intended. Some causes for faults are:

  • Bare or frayed wires and insulation
  • Water leaks near electrical systems
  • Pest damage to electrical systems
  • Miswired electrical units

Ground faults that damage your electrical system can be extremely dangerous.

  • Test your outlet with a receptacle tester. Ground faults should be inspected and corrected by an electrician.
  • Simply replacing the GFCI will not solve the issue of the fault.

Faulty Refrigerator Wiring

Your fridge's internal wiring could be causing your GFCI to trip.

  • Unplug and remove the lower back panel of your refrigerator.
  • Inspect for damaged wires. If any are found, replace them with new wires and tape them securely in place.

Faulty Defrost Heater

The defrost heater is a safety device that prevents the formation of ice inside the refrigerator. This heater removes heat from the air surrounding the refrigerator coils to keep moisture from settling on them and freezing. Over time, this heater can develop cracks and bubbles and may remove enough heat. When the heater kicks on, it draws a lot of power.

  • Reset the timer so that the defrost cycle begins.
  • Monitor the GFCI outlet closely as the defrost cycle starts.
  • If the GFCI trips in under five minutes, this is a warning sign that your refrigerator’s defrost heater has failed.

In other cases, the heater will run for around 8 to 10 hours and then trip the GFCI outlet. In this case, it's likely that either the heater element or wiring gets just damp enough that it causes the GFCI to trip.

  • Inspect your heater element for cracks and bubbles, and check continuity .
  • Check the ends of the wires for signs of moisture.
  • Replace rusted wire, and create new waterproof connections.

How To Use A Multimeter

Every fixer should know their way around a multimeter , which has just north of a zillion uses for testing electronic components and circuits. Follow along to master the three most basic functions of a multimeter.

Part 1: Testing Continuity

Part 2: Measuring Voltage

Part 3: Measuring Resistance

To learn how to use your multimeter to make advanced measurements such as current and capacitance, check out this guide .

Defrost Timer

Fridges with defrost timers will likely trip the breaker each time they kick on, especially if the fridge is already in a cooling cycle. This means that the appliance is drawing the maximum amount of power. The switch itself may be at fault.

  • Test your defrost switch .
  • Consider changing your fridge from a GFCI outlet to a normal outlet.

Faulty Start Capacitor

Sometimes if the refrigerator isn't cold enough, the compressor might be having difficulty starting up. The start capacitor serves as a battery to give the compressor a boost of power during startup. If the start capacitor is burned out —and smells burnt — the compressor might not be able to start and run as often as it should.

Block Image

  • On smaller capacitors, you can use a screwdriver to discharge. But be careful as capacitors increase in size.
  • Test the start capacitor first with a capacitance meter; they don't fail often. If it's faulty, replace it.

How to Safely Discharge a Capacitor

Capacitors are electronic components found in almost every device containing a circuit board. Large capacitors can store enough charge to cause injuries, so they must be discharged properly.

While iFixit currently doesn't sell a capacitor discharge tool, you can easily create your own .

Faulty Overload Relay

The overload relay is a protection device in the compressor circuit and is often combined with the start relay. You can find it plugged directly into the side of the compressor. If the fans are running and your compressor won’t start, or if you hear a clicking sound from the unit follow the troubleshooting below.

  • This may be a hot module, burnt, or rattles when shaken.
  • Flip the unit over and test again. If there's no continuity, replace the unit.

Faulty Start Relay

The start relay is a small device mounted to the side of the compressor. It provides power to the run winding, along with the start winding, for a split second at startup to help get the compressor going. If the start relay is defective, the compressor may run intermittently or not at all, and the refrigerator will not get cold enough. The start relay should be replaced if defective.

  • Test Start Relay with a multimeter. View the video above and verify if your start relay is functioning.
  • Replace the relay if it fails the testing or has a burnt odor. Depending on your start relay, you may have to test the start capacitor and overload relay first and use a process of elimination. If the other two components pass continuity tests, and your compressor isn't starting, try replacing your start relay.

Faulty Compressor

The compressor — also called the condenser — is the workhorse of your fridge. By pressurizing the refrigerant, the evaporator is able to create cold air. If the compressor is very noisy when you start it up, it may have been damaged in transit, or you could just have a faulty compressor.

If the overload relay, start relay, and start capacitor pass continuity testing, then you may have a defective compressor.

  • Test the compressor for continuity by following the video above.
  • Resistance values vary based on the compressor.
  • Values outside of the range or a short to ground will mean replacing the compressor, which is a costly repair.
  • If your fridge is more than a few years old, you may be better off replacing the fridge instead of the compressor.

Compressor Inverter Board Failure

Modern refrigerator compressor technology has shifted from single-phase DC motors to 3-phase DC-controlled AC motors.

What this means is that instead of the start relay assembly normally attached to the compressor pins — the start relay, overload relay, and overload capacitor — there is now a sealed motherboard and a lot of wires. The inverter board modulates the power supplied to the compressor and allows for more efficient operation.

Block Image

This new technology is harder to test, so follow this helpful video.

The inverter board must be tested by the process of elimination.

  • First, test the input voltages. The inverter board will have both a 120V AC main power supply voltage and a 4-6V DC voltage from the main control board. Remember to make all voltage measurements with everything connected.
  • Backtrack to find the issue. You could have a faulty wire harness connector, a bad motherboard, or another issue.
  • If the compressor is fine, and the board input voltages are fine, then your inverter board has failed and needs replacing.

Refrigerant Leaks

If there is a refrigerant leak, the fridge won't be able to maintain a proper temperature. Your compressor is likely running non-stop.

  • Contact a service technician to inspect your compressor.
  • This may result in refilling or replacing your refrigerant, or replacing the entire fridge.

Main Control Board Failure

Finally, if the refrigerator won’t get cold enough, the main control board might be defective. This is not common.

  • Check and test the defrost system, cooling fans, and cooling controls first.
  • If none of the other components are defective, consider replacing the main control board.

Standards and Codes

While it's a common problem for ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI and GFI) outlets to trip when using older refrigerators, newer fridges seem to have more sophisticated internals that prevent trips. New wiring standards are based on NEC Articles 210.8 and 210.52 and are as follows:

  • All commercial buildings/kitchens are required to have GFCI for refrigerators.
  • In a Dwelling Unit (house or apartment) refrigerators located inside the kitchen do NOT have to have a GFCI.
  • If the circuit feeding the refrigerator outlet is branched to any other outlet, it must be a 20-A circuit.  If the circuit feeding the refrigerator outlet is a dedicated individual circuit, then it can be either 15-A or 20-A.
  • In a garage or an unfinished basement of a Dwelling unit, the refrigerator must have a GFCI circuit.

Refrigerator Keeps Tripping GFCI [SOLVED] – Let’s Fix It

The GFCI is the first line of defense against electrical problems in your home. It’s designed to trip if it senses an electrical imbalance, delivering an automatic shutdown that protects you against dangerous shock. If your refrigerator keeps tripping GFCI , it can cause lots of problems for you, including running the risk of your refrigerator randomly turning off, which causes your food to spoil.

If you’ve ever had a refrigerator trip its GFCI, you know the frustration it can cause. Not only will your food spoil if not caught in time, but it will keep happening if you don’t find out why it’s tripping in the first place. Today, we’ll discuss common reasons for this and how to prevent it from happening in the future.

Why Refrigerator Keeps Tripping GFCI – Troubleshoot and Diagnosis

Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) devices protect you and your loved ones from potentially electric accidents. A GFCI device works by monitoring the current in a circuit and comparing it to the current that should be present. If there is a difference, then the device knows that something is wrong — like water or an object that’s touching both the hot and neutral wires — and it shuts off power to prevent serious injuries.

If you have an appliance connected to a GFCI outlet, there’s no need to worry about electric shock. A GFCI outlet is more than just a circuit breaker or fuse, it does both of these things! When it detects water in the receptacle, the GFCI automatically cuts off the current to that outlet, preventing shocks. And just like any great machine, if it’s tripped, it’ll reset itself after a few minutes.

Did you know that your fridge probably trips the GFCI device? This is because all devices with motors produce inductive loads . An inductive load is any component of a circuit which has current flowing through it at all times, even when power isn’t being supplied to the circuit.

Refrigerator Keeps Tripping GFCI

To fix the problem, unplug your refrigerator. Then, follow these steps:

Reset the GFCI

Checking the outlet is your first step, but often it’s just a false alarm. This device is sensitive to usage and environmental changes which could result in “ nuisance trips ”, where it disengages despite there being no issue with the appliance or power source itself. Especially common during electric hot-weather months, you can test your fridge by plugging it back into the outlet.

If your fridge is experiencing frequent tripping, you’ll need to locate the issue. Check your appliance’s owner’s manual for instructions on testing the outlet. If you’re unable to test it yourself, call an electrician to do it for you. Once the GFCI has been tested, reset it. If the problem continues, there may be a defect that requires replacing.

Use a Snubber

If you use a refrigerator with vapor compression and have a GFCI outlet installed near it, be careful. If you unplug the refrigerator, it may trip your GFCI outlet.

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) with a snubber is an option for people who would like to continue using their refrigerator or freezer. A snubber will lessen the effects of the interference with the appliance by creating more resistance on the ground circuit. If you choose to use a snubber, it must be installed between the GFCI deceive and the refrigerator or freezer.

If you’re worried about your refrigerator tripping a GFCI outlet, first try replacing the breaker in the box with one that’s rated for GFCI. If you have a dedicated circuit that operates the refrigerator only, removing the GFCI outlet and replacing it with a standard outlet will solve it.

Inspect Power Cord

One common source of trouble with fridges is the power cord. The problem isn’t usually obvious, so the first thing to do is unplug it and give it a thorough inspection. You can often spot damage to the cord by looking for worn-out insulation, kinks, or bite marks. If you do notice any of these problems, it’s time to replace your current power cord with a brand new one.

Check Power Plug

Next, look at the power prongs. If they are bent or rusted you will need to replace the cord. If they seem fine, plug the appliance into the outlet and turn it on. Plug in another device, like a lamp or clock, to test the outlet.

Overloading

If your GFCI is tripping often, it’s possible that you’re plugged into an overloaded circuit — which, if it goes unchecked, could lead to a fire. If you’ve got any other major home appliances or electronics plugged into the same circuit as your fridge, move them to a different outlet before calling a professional.

If you discover that your home refrigerator is tripping your circuit breaker, and you want to avoid the hassle of running a new dedicated circuit for it, then what you need to do is move your refrigerator to an alternative power outlet, and make sure that it does not still trip the breaker. If it trips in the alternative power outlet, then you will need to contact your local electrical service provider, and they will help you run a new dedicated circuit for the fridge.

Check Power Outlet

Turn the power off at the circuit breaker Remove the plug from the wall outlet If your refrigerator is plugged into a power strip, unplug it and remove the cover on the power strip. Look for any blackened or burned spots on the wires . If you see any, disconnect them from the outlet and purchase new ones. Plug the wires back in to the outlet and then plug your refrigerator back in.

You can easily check whether or not a power outlet has continuity. Just use a multimeter to check for current flow, and you’re good to go! If the current isn’t flowing through the device, it means that there is a problem with one of the wires. However, before you start working on any electrical system, make sure that you equip yourself with the right tools and equipment — and remember to only carry out repairs if you’re qualified to do so.

Circuit Breaker Issue

If you have tried all the above steps to no avail, then it might be time to take a look at the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is responsible for regulating electrical current in your home, so if the fault lies with this, it will need to be replaced or fixed. The correct procedure for doing this will depend on which type of breaker panel you have. If you are unsure, please consult a licensed electrician before proceeding.

Faulty Refrigerator Wiring

If your refrigerator is failing to cool the food inside it, check the wiring first. Always unplug the fridge before performing any repairs. The wiring is not difficult to fix—should you decide to do it yourself. It will involve unplugging and removing the lower back panel of your refrigerator and inspecting for damaged wires. If any are found, you will need to replace them with new wires and tape them up securely in place.

Faulty Defrost Heater

The Defrost Heater is a safety device that prevents the formation of ice inside the refrigerator. This part works by removing heat from the air surrounding the refrigerator coils to keep moisture from settling on them and freezing. Over time, this heater can become weak and may not be able to remove enough heat.

Defrost heaters are designed to get hot quick to help melt any frost or ice that has built up inside your refrigerator. A GFCI outlet trip is often the result of a faulty defrost heater. The best way to test it is to replace the timer so that it creates a defrost cycle, then watch for any signs of overheating.

To find out for sure, you’ll have to reset the timer so that the defrost cycle happens. And when it does, you’ll want to stay nearby. Monitor the GFCI outlet closely when the defrost cycle starts. If the GFCI trips in under five minutes, this is a serious warning sign that your refrigerator’s defrost heater has failed.

Defective Compressor

If you’ve read this far, but still aren’t sure what the problem is, then it’s likely that your refrigerator’s compressor is having issues. Over time, the winding on the compressor starts to fail , and it takes more power to run than the fridge can provide. This causes the fridge to constantly run, which uses extra electricity and wastes food.

A faulty condenser usually requires a new refrigerator, but it doesn’t happen as often as some people think. Before you make a decision on whether to replace the refrigerator or not, bring it to a qualified technician for inspection. The technician will take a look at the fridge to ensure you didn’t forget any problems that can be fixed.

Refrigerator Tripping GFCI On Generator

After the GFCI trips, or any other type of breaker trips, it is always a good idea to check the reason why. If nuisance tripping is the only issue, then adding a snubber will fix this issue. However, there are other potential issues that can cause your breaker to trip, and this includes:

Created Faults

If you have an older refrigerator that doesn’t have an ice maker or a self-defrost function, it could be tripping the GFCI outlet. Or if you do have an icemaker or a self-defrost function, you can turn these off to stop the GFCI outlet from tripping.

If your fridge isn’t new enough to have an ice maker or a self-defrost function, it can cause the GFCI outlet to turn off. In this case, you will want to avoid using a GFCI outlet if possible.

Ground Fault

A ground fault occurs when electricity is sent through a different path than intended. For example, instead of going into the outlet to power your appliances, it could go through the pipes that run inside your walls. When electricity passes through metal pipes, it will cause a circuit breaker to trip. Ground faults damage your electrical system and are dangerous for you and your home.

Before electricity moves from a source to a destination, it goes through a series of devices so that if there is a problem, it can be stopped in its tracks. If your GFCI trips, don’t panic — it’s just doing its job.

While you can solve the problem by removing the GCFI outlet, the real issue is your home’s wiring. When it comes to electrical problems in your home, you can’t cut corners. If you don’t address the problem at its source, the fault will come back – and not all at once. That means additional problems to fix, the extra money spent on repairs, and even worse: a fire.

Everything electrical in my 2000 Monarch operates fine, except when I turn on the Fridge then the GFCI trips. I am plugged into shore power (50A) with proper polarity. It does't matter if other appliances (ie AC units) are on or not. Any ideas? The refrigerator works fine on LP.

Try running an extension cord from the fridge to something like the pedestal outside or another plug on a different circuit. If you still have an issue you have a big issue. If the issue disappears you may have a faulty GFCI or an issue downstream of the plug.

Bill gave you good diagnostics.

It is not uncommon for the 120 VAC heating element in the refrigerator to make contact with part of the coach ground (refrigerator metal). That will (and should) trip the GFI.

Sometimes, just moving the heating element will remedy it, sometimes it has to be replaced.

Thank you Bill and Brett. I have ran an extension cord to a non-GFCI recepticle and the fridge runs perfect. I also connected to another GFCI circuit and it tripped it also. From these results I surmise the problem lies either in the fridge circuits or a faulty/weak GFCI.

For Brett, I checked and could not find any obvious chassis ground problem as you suggested.

If the refrigerator tripped not only your built-in GFI, but a second GFI, that suggests that there is a problem with the heating element-- likely grounding to the refrigerator flue.

Said another way, very unlikely that two different GFI's are bad and refrigerator heating element good.

I agree with Brett. If the second GFCI was on a completely different circuit from the first then you need to be looking toward the fridge as the source of the problem.

Once again, thanks to Bill and Brett. I have eliminated all sources of a ground fault that are repairable by a novice. The problem is with the fridge itself. I will today once again check the grounding of the heater to the flue. after that I will seek a professional in the Chattanoga, TN area. Lee Smith Co. is my preferred repair facility. Their RV repair is second to none.

Thanks again for your invaluable advice.

"It is not uncommon for the 120 VAC heating element in the refrigerator to make contact with part of the coach ground (refrigerator metal). That will (and should) trip the GFI."

I would agree if the heating element is defective by leaking current to ground. But it is a sealed unit like that in an electric hot water heater, and the outer tube encasing the heating element should normally be at ground potential. At least for my Norcold heating elements I recently replaced, they are sealed and not an exposed resistance wire type heater element that would have exposed voltage potential.

Gerald, my Norcold 1200 has two heating elements, both have what appears to be 12AWG wire going to the circuit board. On my refer one wire is yellow (line 120vac) and one wire is black (line ground) for each element -- four wires total.

First unplug the AC cord for the refer. Then pull the +12vdc wire from it's spade connector on the circuit board. Disconnect the hot and ground heating element 120vac wires from the circuit board spade connectors and check with an ohm meter on a high range from one element wire at a time to refer ground point on the back of the unit. Make sure the other pulled wire(s) is not touching anything. It should read infinite resistance (open circuit). If you have a reading the heating element(s) needs to be replaced.

If you get no reading (as you should) from the above test, you may have a "current leak" to ground on or behind your circuit board. Unscrew it and check the top and botton (trace side) for dirt, moisture, dead bugs, etc. Also look for poor solder joints and any bridging between circuit traces of solder, residue, etc. Brush clean and follow with compressed air if available.

"I also connected to another GFCI circuit and it tripped it also. From these results I surmise the problem lies either in the fridge circuits or a faulty/weak GFCI."

It is doubtful you have two faulty ground fault receptacles (GFR). If no shorts to ground exist on the above heating element testing, and no obvious issues while viewing the circuit board, the board, power cable, and plug will have to be tested to determine the location of the short.

Keep in mind this is not a "direct short" to ground that would trip open the 15 or 20 amp circuit breaker. GFR's will trip open with currents to ground as low as 7 to 10 milliampers (.007 to .010 Amp).

To all poster's. I have had the heating elements replaced at Lee Smith Co. The elements (2) were bad. The new elements have cured the problem. I learn daily how valuable this Forum is. I really appreciate all responses.

Thanks again to all,

mdouglass55

I had the entire cooling unit replaced in January and while traveling down the road the fridge stays cold. But when we stop overnight, the fridge warms back to 45 or 50 and we have had to throw out a lot of food. It now works well on LP, but not so well on electric. We replaced the 12-volt fan to pull the hot air from the coils out, but the new fan runs continuously, 24/7. We just started a new non-profit to educate the RVing community on traveling with disabilities, but we are limited on using the RV due to the fridge issue.

mdouglass55,

Welcome to the FMCA Forum. There is no reason for that kind of performance from any RV refrigerator in good condition.

What make and model do you have?

Is it in a slide?

Do you have the auxiliary fans at the top of the refrigerator outside compartment exhausting UP?

Have you tested the 120 VAC heating element(s)?

If you need to travel you can always just leave the fridge on gas and your trip will not be interrupted. In the meantime I would be looking at the heating element as the most likely cause of your problem. This unit is designed to do what an open propane flame does and if it is not heating properly you will have very poor performance.

Dometic RV Refrigerator Trips Breaker (Why And How To Fix)

Not every appliance works perfectly. Even when you buy new, there is the risk that you have purchased a lemon or at least an appliance that has difficulty getting along with the electrical system. Unfortunately, even RVs are not immune to this issue and you need to find the problem.

This happens more often than you would think. Many people have experienced this issue and the most common cause is that there is a problem with the heating unit. The best fix for this problem is replacing the heating element.

To learn more about this Dometic fridge problem, just continue to read our article. It has the information you need to know about so you can prevent a fire or further damage to your appliance or RV.

Why Would a Refrigerator Trip a GFCI?

Why-Would-a-Refrigerator-Trip-a-GFCI

The main reason this would take place is that there is a short in the system somewhere. The heating element may be bad, it may be drawing too much power or there may even be a problem with your extension cord.

That problem will be enough to trip the GFCI breaker and cut the power to everything attached to that breaker. Another source would be a short in the wiring as the electrical wires were not put in correctly, there is a fray or the wires were not the right gauge to handle the flow of electricity.

Unless you are an electrical expert and have the right tools to diagnose the problem, this is something that should be left up to the qualified repairman, especially if the fridge is still under warranty.

Do the simple fixes first, like testing a new extension cord, and if that doesn’t solve the problem then it is most likely the heating element. This is not a problem you want to delay getting fixed because it can damage your fridge as well as start a nice fire.

Finding a qualified repairman is not always an easy task to do.

RV Refrigerator Tripping GFCI When Plugged In

RV-Refrigerator-Tripping-GFCI-When-Plugged-In

This is a common problem and since fridges are not perfect, there may be some point in time where you will experience this taking place. The general consensus is that there is a problem with the heating element or the wiring connecting that element to the electrical source.

One source that may cause the problem is that the heating element began to touch some metal part on your fridge. This can happen as you drive over some bumpy roads. When this happens, you can try moving the element away from the metal section and solve your problem.

Other times you will not be able to do this as the problem is not the touching but somewhere in the element, the wiring, or the GFCI breaker itself. To test the GFCI breaker, unplug your Dometic fridge from the RV wiring and run an extension cord to a plug, not on the same circuit.

If there is no problem after plugging the extension cord into the new circuit, there is either a problem with the wiring in the RV, the connection to the outlet, the outlet itself, or the GFCI breaker is bad.

If you connect to a second independent GFCI breaker and it trips, then the problem is with the fridge. Do the test so you know what needs to be fixed and let the qualified repairman do the repair work for you.

What Does the Check Light Mean On a Dometic RV Fridge?

What-Does-the-Check-Light-Mean-On-a-Dometic-RV-Fridge

This light is placed on your Dometic fridge to monitor the gas system. If it goes on then there is a problem somewhere in that system. The good news is that if you see the light on before you get moving, the fix is easy and should not delay you for very long.

Now if you have set the fridge to automatic, the light should not go on as the fridge system is designed to switch back and forth between gas and electricity when there may be an issue arising. It may go on in this mode when electricity is not available.

Usually, the fridge is designed to go to electrical power by default. If you see the check light on when you are in auto mode then that is telling you that neither gas nor electricity is available and the fridge can’t operate.

Also, the check light may be indicating that there is another problem that needs your attention. You may need a checklist of items to look at to help guide your search. having the checklist helps make finding the problem a lot easier and you save time. Always look to the simple solutions first.

Reasons Why the Check Light Comes On

Reasons-Why-the-Check-Light-Comes-On

There are lots of reasons why the check light appears when you least expect it to. One source may simply be that there is a short in the system and you will need to check the wiring. It does happen but this may not be a frequent source.

Here are some reasons why the check light comes on:

  • 1. The gas is turned off - when you are on automatic mode, the gas still has to be turned on.
  • 2. RV is not level - all RV fridges seem to have this nuance. They like to be level if they are going to work properly. Check your levelers to make sure everything is as it should be.
  • 3. The propane tank is empty - this happens at the wrong time and you simply forgot to refill it.
  • 4. Ignition wire is dirty - carbon and other dirt and grime can build up on the ignition wire and cause it to stop lighting the gas. Scrape the tip of the wire clean again. To get to that wire, you may have to remove a couple of panels.
  • 5. Faulty fuse - this will cause your fridge to shut down and not work. Go to your fuse box and check them out. Don’t forget to check the fuse your heating element is connected to, it can short and cause the light to come on. Use a multimeter to see if this is a problem.
  • 6. Low batteries - your RV battery may have run out of power and the fridge is not getting any electricity. Recharge your batteries regularly to avoid this problem.
  • 7. Powerboard malfunction - this does happen from time to time and you may need to replace it. Or the control panel is defective and has created problems for you.
  • 8. Thermostat issues - this is a cheap part but it can affect your Dometic fridge if it is not working, has loose connections, or came loose from its proper position and is hanging by the wires.
  • 9. The outside burner is clogged - this has happened to some RV owners. They did not have a flying insect screen installed on their outside burner. It was clogged with pollen and cottonwood seeds. An air hose will blow the dirt out and installing a screen will keep them out.
  • 10. Check the venting - improper venting may cause problems for the fridge and in turn the fridge will activate the check light. Make sure the vents are clear and in the right place.

Troubleshooting Your Dometic Fridge

Here are some solutions to common Dometic fridge issues that may impact your RV vacation:

1. The fridge is not cooling right

  • Inadequate ventilation - check the vents to see if they are clogged and clean them if they are.
  • The condenser is heavily frosted - check the fridge door to make sure it is closing tightly and correctly.
  • Too much warm food was placed inside the fridge - let the food cool first before putting inside.
  • Thermostat is too low - just adjust the dial to a cooler setting.

2. Does not cool on battery operation

  • Onboard fuse is bad - replace the fuse
  • RV battery has no power - recharge the battery
  • Defective heating element - let a dealer replace it for you

3. Fridge not operating in gas mode

  • Propane tank is empty - refill at a nearest propane dealer
  • Upstream valves closed - open the valve
  • Air in the gas line - turn fridge on and off several times

4. The fridge has stopped working- turn it off and go to a Dometic dealer or approved repairman

5. Odors- burner is out of place, is damaged or there is dirt in the system

6. Not cooling- damaged fuse, open door, bad thermostat, power failure,

Some Final Words

The check light is not always indicating a serious problem. Make sure to run through the simple and quick-to-fix sources first before heading off to your Dometic dealer. Unless it is still under warranty.

Some fixes you should be able to do without voiding the warranty and you will be open your way shortly. If the breaker is tripping then get qualified help to fix it.

I am having two issues with my (1992) Norcold 6082 the first is one I knew about it blows the house GFCI when plugged in to my shore power if I use a non GFCI plug it is fine, so really not a big issue until I installed my Samlex 3000 inverter it also has a built in GFCI I spent an hour on the phone yesterday with the tech desk yesterday trouble shooting and narrowed it down to the fridge again simple fix is to unplug the fridge any time I have the inverter on not really what I want to have to do. So I need a fix for that. The second issue is now the fridge is not lighting when outside I can hear the gas valve open and it sounds like gas is flowing, the igniter is sparking but it will not light, I have made sure that the propane should be there and it is not air in the line, both by running other gas appliances and trying to light the fridge around 50 times. Help with either of these problems or both would be appreciated. Thanks so much

This is a fairly common problem with RV fridges. There is a bit of electrical current leakage at the electric heating element and the GFCI trips because the return (neutral) current does not equal the outgoing "hot wire" current. You may be able to fix it by cleaning any corrosion from around the heater element wires and mounting, but more likely you will have to replace the heater element. Sometimes they come out easily and sometimes they are frozen in place. Try running the fridge in LP gas mode instead of electric. If the GFCI trip problem goes away in LP mode, you will know the issue is the heater element. If it does not, the problem is elsewhere.

Got the propane fixed the burner was full of junk, I guess the previous owner (we got it in the fall) never cleaned it. still working o the electric.

OK so I plugged into a non GFCI over night according to the lights on the fridge it is working, the "chimney" is hot but the fridge is not cool. Any suggestions?

Are you saying it cools ok on LP gas but not on electric?  Everything is the same whether using gas or electric as the heat source, so if the cooling unit works on LP and the boiler gets hot when using electric mode, it should also cool that way. Is the freezer cold but not the main fridge, or is nothing cold? Same for gas vs electric? It may take 24 hours for significant cooling.

it is not cooling on either  :'( I also took another look at the burner and it had some yellow dust of death I am thinking of a residential fridge.

Yellow dust = Doom. You can either replace the cooling unit or do a whole new fridge, maybe residential if you have little need for off-grid operation. I would estimate about $600 for a new cooling unit if you DIY. It's a major chore but not technically difficult.
