  • Trivia There were ten days of location shooting in Iceland, where daylight lasted virtually 24 hours. Joseph Kosinski wanted to make a film that was very much based in daylight, considering that a lot of classic sci-fi movies like Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982) were shot in near darkness.

'Obsession': Why everyone is talking about the new Netflix series — and what it has to do with pillows

Spoiler alert: this story mentions a specific scene in the netflix show obsession ..

Have you watched Obsession yet?

The much-discussed erotic thriller that Netflix released this month has already got people talking, with some viewers having already gulped down the four-part miniseries.

Here's a closer look:

Why is everyone talking about Obsession ?

Like audience favorites Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction or, more recently, Fifty Shades of Grey , Obsession is sexy, with a juicy plot . Netflix describes it this way on the streamer's cleverly named blog, Tudum: "William, a renowned doctor, is at the height of his career — he just successfully performed a 14-hour brain surgery on conjoined infants — and his wife and grown kids are wildly proud of him. But trouble starts after he meets his son's girlfriend and sparks fly — nay, explode. The two begin a fiery affair that quickly spreads into a dangerous, all-consuming romance."

According to Netflix, the show currently ranks in the top 10 of its most popular TV shows.

Viewers have proclaimed it "steamy," "wild" and "cringe" on social media.

This despite Netflix's international properties issuing a tongue-in-cheek nudity warning.

If you've made the (questionable) decision to watch Obsession with your parents, these are the moments you'll probably want to excuse yourself: Ep1: 26m14s Ep2: 00m32s Ep2: 22m00s Ep3: 10m15s Ep3: 25m58s Ep4: 02m15s — Netflix UK & Ireland (@NetflixUK) April 16, 2023

There's one scene in particular that instantly prompted endless memes...

How is a hotel room involved — and a pillow?

Much of the attention has centered on a scene in which the character of William, played by Richard Armitage, books the same hotel room where his son Jay (Rish Shah) and girlfriend Anna (Charlie Murphy) had stayed. He smells around the bed, hoping for a whiff of her scent, and buries his head in a pillow as he masturbates.

Me: excited to start a cool, dark, fatal attraction type thriller….. Also Me: Ends up watching some middle age Englishman shag a pillow… #ObsessionNetflix — R I L E Y (@_lifeofriley92) April 13, 2023

All I know is that I no longer want to own a pillow #obsession #netflix #NetflixObsession — Hayley Davis (@HayleyDavisxo) April 18, 2023

Armitage explained to Metro just what went into making the scene.

"It was really unexpected because it was written as quite a different scene," he told British newspaper this month. "There was a tissue with her imprint of her lipstick on which we didn't feel necessarily worked."

The actor said he had some help from Murphy, who, unbeknownst to him, had sprayed her scent onto different parts of the bed.

"I was really conscious that it shouldn't be in any way comedic so we sort of left it quite open and it was a bit of an improvisation actually," Armitage said.

Is the show based on anything?

Yes, Obsession is adapted from Damage , a 1991 novel written by Josephine Hart. The story was also the basis of an opera and, in 1992, a movie starring Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. That film currently has a 79% , based on 24 reviews, on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Co-star Miranda Richardson, who plays the wife of the cheating husband, was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. She won prizes from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the New York Film Critics Circle. Per Box Office Mojo, the film version earned $7.5 million in theaters worldwide; by comparison, other romantic dramas from the same year brought in a lot more. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's Far and Away sold   $137.8 million in tickets, while blockbuster The Bodyguard made $411 million total. But the even smaller The Cutting Edge , which was actually more of a romantic comedy (toe pick!), earned $25.1 million.

What have the reviews for Obsession the show been like? And will it be back?

So the newer Obsession has not been well received by film critics. Fourteen reviews, with an average of 40% , have been tallied by Rotten Tomatoes. Some 50-plus audience members have rated it, and their scores give it a low 21%. Audiences appear split, however, alternately finding it to be "a shambles," "disturbing," "fantastic" and "beautiful."

Regardless of reviews from anyone, the show was released as a limited series, so it's not expected to have a second go-round. It's notable, though, that neither did HBO's buzzy Big Little Lies when it came out in 2017, yet there was a second season in 2019.

Top mates … Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise.

He can’t handle the truth! Did Simon Pegg really reveal Tom Cruise’s darkest secret?

Pegg’s casually dropped bombshell and awkward online disclaimer may have given us the most chilling glimpse behind the Cruise curtain we’ve seen in years

I f you were online at all this weekend, you may very well have noticed an interview that Simon Pegg gave to The Times (£). It didn’t offer much new information when it comes to Pegg (he had an alcohol problem, he wants to be taken seriously, he has tattoos now). However, it did appear to reveal something new about Pegg’s frequent co-star Tom Cruise: he is compulsively unable to display contrition.

“The best thing he taught me is never to accept responsibility for a mistake,” Pegg said. “If something goes wrong and it’s his fault, he’ll flatly deny it. And then if someone corrects him, instead of saying sorry, he’ll just say: ‘Yeah,’ and wink at me … He maintains his authority by never being to blame for anything.”

This in itself is interesting. For decades now, Cruise has managed to maintain an aura of mystique, and this has helped him to become the perfect movie star. Nobody really knows anything about him, and this allows us to project all our hopes and aspirations on to him. In fact, the one time his career took a significant dive happened to be the moment where he slipped and let the world in a little too much. His courtship of Katie Holmes was slightly too public. He used interviews as a platform to preach Scientology values. He started jumping on settees on the television. It was all a little unsightly, and it affected his star power.

You’ll notice that Cruise’s recent career upswing has coincided with him shutting the gates again. Interviews with him are rare, and he’d never deign to express a strong opinion about anything in public. And this is why Pegg’s interview went viral. He gave us a peek behind Tom Cruise’s curtain, and in the process appeared to reveal a genuinely horrible personality trait.

‘Yeah, about what I said’ … Pegg and Cruise in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Not taking responsibility for a mistake is a bully trait. It’s what Apprentice candidates do. It’s what Donald Trump does. Owning up to something that’s your fault is human, and it’s hard to trust anyone who finds themselves unable to do it. It is, in short, not a good look for Tom Cruise.

And this might explain what happened next. A few hours after the interview was published, Pegg posted a short video to the internet. “I’m currently trending on Twitter for something I said in the Times interview about Tom Cruise never accepting responsibility for his mistakes, like it isn’t just a fucking running joke that we have,” he said, before growling. “Stop being so fucking literal.”

Now, as far as I can see, one of three things happened here. Let’s break it down.

1. Simon Pegg really was joking in the interview. This is entirely feasible. Perhaps he really does have a running joke where he chides Tom Cruise about his refusal to cop to mistakes. The pair have worked together on several movies now, and may well have developed the sort of rapport where Tom Cruise doesn’t immediately obliterate Simon Pegg’s career and personal life for talking back. However, nowhere in the interview does Pegg even come close to alluding to the fact that this is a joke.

2. His tone didn’t translate. Again, this is entirely feasible. Since the dawn of time interviewees have come to realise that sometimes things that seem fun and lighthearted in person can often come across as uncomfortably blunt in print. Perhaps, for all we know, Pegg spent the interview giggling and winking and saying outlandish things about his friend only to see that, once written down, it looked like a serious evaluation of all of Cruise’s biggest flaws.

3. Simon Pegg got a call. I’m not saying that Tom Cruise’s big red telephone went off as soon as the interview was published and, apoplectic with rage, called Pegg and chewed him out for half an hour about the incalculable brand damage his loose lips caused, which then forced Pegg to issue an awkward response online. And I’m not saying that “Stop being so fucking literal” is as lame an excuse as “I was taken out of context” or “My account was hacked”. But I will say this. If this is what actually happened, and Simon Pegg really did screw up by revealing too much about Tom Cruise, then that response video is an absolute masterclass in not taking responsibility for a mistake. He has taught you well. Bravo.

8 top gun: maverick details that prove tom cruise's obsession with realistic flight scenes paid off.

Top Gun: Maverick's success arguably saved the movie industry. These eight details proved Cruise's commitment to making the best movie possible.

  • Top Gun: Maverick captures the authentic atmosphere of a navy fighter school, showcasing the passion and dedication of those involved.
  • For example, the depiction of aviator glasses worn by fighter pilots in the film is not just for style but also serves a practical purpose, providing the best coverage of the sky and enduring harsh weather conditions.
  • The attention to detail in the film extends to the realistic use of afterburners, which give jets an extra thrust during takeoff, and the accurate portrayal of the physical demands and challenges faced by fighter pilots in real life.

Top Gun: Maverick was one of the biggest movies of 2022, and an important aspect of the sequel's success was Tom Cruise's obsession with ensuring as much of the movie was as realistic as possible. The thirty-six-year gap between the 1986 Top Gun and its 2022 sequel may have been a surprise to many, but with major advances in filming technology through the decades, the wait was well worth it. Moreover, Cruise's star power rose exponentially over the three-decade break, thus ensuring he would have far more creative control over this film than its predecessor.

By now, Tom Cruise's movie career has solidified his position as one of the hardest-working actors in the business - and with each new project, audiences wait with bated breaths to see what new and inventive stunts Cruise will perform. In the case of Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise was more focused on realism and accuracy than he was on stunts (although he certainly performed plenty), thus ensuring the work the US Navy does was depicted with authenticity. From bits of dialogue and apparel to proper maneuvers, Cruise's obsession with realism paid off in the 2022 summer blockbuster.

8 Top Gun Is A Real School

While this might seem like a no-brainer, Top Gun is an actual school in the United States. Top Gun is merely a nickname for what's actually called the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, and the school has been in existence since 1969. While it's more of a means of testing pilots' aptitude for war than it is about learning how to handle oneself in dogfights, the nickname "Top Gun" came from the fact that most jets during its inception had guns on top of them.

Top Gun: Maverick Ending Explained (In Detail)

Top Gun: Maverick treats the school with the respect and authenticity required to properly reflect the school. While most audiences might assume that every day at Top Gun is filled with high-intensity dogfights non-stop, the reality of the situation is it's a lot like any other school a person could enroll in. There are egos and things of that nature sure enough, but the movie's depictions of highly passionate individuals wishing to serve their country, starting from mundane things, rings truer than anything else in the film.

7 Fighter Pilots Are Issued Aviator Glasses

While it may seem like an obvious thing to some and an innocuous detail to others, Cruise's Maverick along with his fellow onscreen Navy airmen and airwomen are seen wearing a pair of aviator glasses throughout the movie. Aside from indoor scenes, audiences could almost always count on seeing any of the characters wearing the glasses that have become synonymous with the Navy. Sure aviators look cool, but they have a more practical purpose that most folks might overlook.

According to real fighter pilots, aviators are worn on the base and in their jets because they provide the best coverage of the sky. Additionally, aviators allow fighter pilots to endure the harsh and ever-changing weather conditions that they have to endure while completing drills or actual missions. Even though this trend is settling down a bit, it still is very common to see fighter pilots either wearing aviators or sheathing them in between their shirts while indoors.

6 Penny Ringing The Bell At The Bar Is Real

A somewhat hilarious detail Cruise was obsessed with showcasing to audiences was the barkeep's emphatic ringing of a bell whenever someone did something they weren't supposed to in a bar. Whether it be at a pilots' club or bar, the bell is rung to enforce various rules that some pilots might consciously or unconsciously break. As funny as it was when it happened in the movie, its real-life implications are much more serious.

To be a member of the US Navy, the person must display the utmost respect at all times when on the base. If they wear a cap indoors, act rowdy (whether under the influence or not), put their phone on the bar, go behind the bar, etc. the bells are rung loudly and clearly. This is done to maintain order and discipline on the base. In Maverick , Maverick is the one who Penny rings the bell for, and it happens in front of all his students. This moment was a great subtle way to remind him that nobody is special or exempt from following the rules.

5 Afterburner Is Real And Not Just Cool Looking

On many occasions, the various jets in Top Gun: Maverick can be seen emitting a fiery orange flame from their exhausts during takeoff from the carriers and other scenes. One would be forgiven for assuming this was CGI or some other sort of filmmaking wizardry at play, but as it turns out, this is fairly common in real life. This unique visual is known as an afterburner, and it's a strategy that is used to give jets an extra thrust or boost when taking off.

Top Gun: Maverick New Cast & Returning Character Guide

Afterburner is used in instances that require a speedy completion of a mission or even a training drill. While the standard amount of thrust at an F-18 Hornet (the jets most commonly seen in the movie) can attain just under 11,000 pounds of thrust, afterburner allows them to achieve 18,000 almost in an instant. Because most casual audiences would be none the wise and would assume this is something that is always supposed to happen, its inclusion speaks to Cruise's attention to the minor details.

4 Maverick Really Would Be Leagues Ahead Of His Students

One of the key aspects of Maverick's character is how despite his shortcomings in his personal life, he is an exceptionally skilled fighter pilot. While his unorthodox methods often cause him to clash heads with his superiors and even fellow pilots, they have to concede to the results that his passion brings. Observing his role in Top Gun: Maverick he's shown to completely and utterly outmatch his students with an almost unrealistic zeal and flair, but the reality of this depiction is that it isn't too far off from the truth.

In real life, the most proficient student isn't even nearly half as skilled or qualified as the most proficient instructors. This is necessary because the work that fighter pilots do is very complex and nuanced - and for fledgling pilots to truly grasp the nature of their responsibilities, they have to be humbled by a highly skilled pilot early on. While some may have felt Maverick was being harsh on his new students, Cruise's Oscar-worthy performance was much more realistic than some may have realized.

3 The Physics Seen In Top Gun: Maverick Are Accurate

One of Top Gun: Maverick 's most notable aspects was the raw kinetic force the IMAX cameras were able to handle and depict. While real-life fighter pilots have confirmed that not every day is as exciting as one may assume, they've also stated that when things get serious in the sky, it can often be very physically demanding. Considering that Cruise is a certified pilot in real life, it isn't a surprise to see that the actor wanted to get behind the cockpit again to showcase the force of the Navy's jets.

Top Gun 3: Confirmation, Cast & Everything We Know About The Maverick Sequel

One consistent criticism about the original Top Gun is that it didn't depict the effects of flying around in these fighter jets. Top Gun: Maverick, on the other hand, showed the effects in subtle ways with the characters' interactions with each other. While many of the men on the team had huge chips on their shoulders for personal reasons, a part of the bad attitudes was also due to the stressors of spending countless hours in the sky.

2 Maverick Saying "I Have Information Alpha"

Arguably one of the biggest details that casual audiences would no doubt miss is the dialogue and codes used throughout the movie. As far as most people were concerned, the dialogue used during the dogfights could have been made up for the movie to heighten the action. However, as many active and retired Navy personnel have acknowledged, so much can be communicated with seemingly minor call signs and codes.

Retired astronaut and engineer Chris Hadfield expressed his joy over hearing Maverick say, "I have Information Alpha" despite it being said early in the movie and seemingly not meaning much. This phrase essentially means Maverick is aware of the weather and knows which runway is active, so his commanders don't have to repeat themselves. What's more impressive about this moment is that according to Hadfield, it didn't even need to be in the movie because almost nobody would get it, and its inclusion verified Cruise as a real pilot.

1 Top Gun: Maverick's Final Mission Is Realistic

The depiction of the climactic mission in Top Gun: Maverick was completely spot-on. Everything from the low-level dips to the high acceleration climbs, the barrel rolls, and the high G-turns that were shown during the movie's final moments were things that real pilots not only do but do routinely. Many of these techniques are utilized so that pilots' bodies can sustain the shifts in pressure while maneuvering through the sky.

In Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise's insistence on the cameras being placed inside the cockpits during these intense scenes far exceeded the expectations that the trailers established. Moreover, it further showcased Cruise's knowledge and respect for what fighter pilots endure on a near-daily basis, thus reinforcing the necessity for more realism in movies. Cruise could have cut corners and called it a day - but if he had done that, there's a good chance Steven Spielberg might not have claimed Top Gun: Maverick saved Hollywood.

Psychologist Tells Us Fame Complicates Katie Holmes' Emotions As Suri Cruise Turns 18

I t seems like only yesterday that Suri Cruise was an adorable little girl being carried around in her mom's arms. But Suri is all grown up now and preparing to branch out into life on her own terms. It's never easy for any mom to wave goodbye to their teen daughter. Still, Katie Holmes' emotions are further complicated by her celebrity status.

NYC Neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez, Director of Comprehend the Mind , shed light on how and why fame can exacerbate Holmes' feelings about her daughter transitioning from a teen to a young woman. "For a celebrity parent, the emotions surrounding their child's 18th birthday and potential departure from home might be influenced by additional factors," Dr. Hafeez told Nicki Swift exclusively, noting that public scrutiny and security concerns are two potential issues.

Dr. Hafeez pointed out that the public spotlight can be emotionally taxing for celebrity parents. "They may worry about how the media and fans perceive their child's milestones, leading to heightened emotions and a strong desire to maintain a positive image. Moreover, concerns about safety and privacy can add an extra layer of anxiety to the typical parental worries about their child's well-being." Dr. Hafeez also highlighted the impact of forced time apart on family dynamics, a common occurrence in celebrity families that are "shaped by the demands of fame and busy schedules." He noted that this separation due to filming or touring demands "could significantly influence the emotions experienced on the child's 18th birthday."

Suri Is An Independent Young Woman

Despite her famous folks and paparazzi-fueled start in life, Suri Cruise proved she was a typical 18-year-old on her April 18, 2024, birthday, enjoying a low-key stroll around Manhattan with a friend, looking like a regular teen on a day out shopping. Katie Holmes has done a great job raising her daughter to be down-to-earth and well-adjusted, far away from all the craziness and pressures that often befall Hollywood kids. However, it's not all plain sailing for Suri's mom. Although she's taken a huge step back from her Tom Cruise days, the actor will likely never escape the intense scrutiny she was subjected to during her high-profile marriage.

According to NYC neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez, Director of Comprehend the Mind, Holmes is like any regular mom, though experiencing a mix of emotions as her daughter reaches adulthood. "She feels a sense of pride and accomplishment for Suri's growth, but also a hint of sadness, realizing how swiftly time has passed," Dr. Hafeez tells Nicki Swift exclusively. "There's anxiety about her child leaving home, coupled with concern for her future. However, there's also a sense of relief, knowing that she has prepared her daughter for independence."

Dr. Hafeez noted that Holmes inevitably feels a tinge of loneliness at the thought of her daughter flying the coup but is excited about her future. "It's a bittersweet moment, filled with pride, love, and a touch of apprehension, as she watches her child transition into adulthood," he added.

Suri Is Going It Alone Without Tom – At Least For Now

Little is known of Tom Cruise's relationship with Suri Cruise . There have been reports — some highly litigious — regarding Tom's contact, or lack thereof, with his daughter. In October 2012, he sued Life & Style and In Touch for $50 million over their headline, "Suri in tears, abandoned by her dad."

"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri," his attorney told TMZ . "She's a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie." Still, it appeared Tom was nowhere to be seen on Suri's birthday and she's quite OK with that, apparently. "Tom does not exist to her. Suri will not have any contact with her father, despite being 18, and even if he called, she would not answer," a source claimed to the  Daily Mail. "He does not exist to Katie or Suri, and his daughter does not want to rely on him for anything."

However, outspoken former Scientologist Leah Remini believes Tom is playing the long game. She predicts he's waiting until Suri is older to "lure" her away from Holmes and indoctrinate her into the organization."Scientology considers Katie a suppressive person, which is an enemy, and therefore Tom believes, like all Scientologists, that he can't be connected to Suri," Remini told the New York Post . In August 2023, a Scientology spokesperson slammed Remini's "obsession with attacking her former religion by spreading falsehoods and hate speech."

What to Know About Victoria Beckham’s 50th Birthday

Posh Spice had a party involving tequila, Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek — and a rare performance by all five Spice Girls.

Victoria Beckham, who has disheveled hair and is wearing sunglasses, being carried outside of a building by David Beckham on his back. He is wearing a black bow tie, a white collared shirt, suspenders, black pants and black shoes.

By Elizabeth Paton

A 50th birthday is a major milestone in any woman’s life — though not everyone has to step into it like Victoria Beckham, who not long ago broke her foot in a gym accident. Still, Mrs. Beckham was determined to celebrate in style in London on Saturday, when, at least for one night, she replaced the medical boot she has been wearing for months with pointed toe stilettos, visible panties and a long sheer sea-foam-green gown from her own label.

“As I get ready to step into 50 (in heels, of course!), I feel so incredibly blessed to have reached this milestone,” she wrote in an Instagram post last week. “Blessed, but also accomplished and deeply content. This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter, and I’m only just getting started.”

Here’s what happened at the big birthday bash thrown by the fashion designer and former Spice Girl.

The Location

The party took place at Oswald’s, an exclusive private member’s club owned by Robin Birley in the Mayfair neighborhood of London. Mr. Birley, London’s king of clubs, named Oswald’s after his grandfather, whose portrait hangs behind the reception desk.

The club is known to attract a who’s who of guests. When Beyoncé was in town last year, she headed to Oswald’s. When Princess Eugenie celebrated her wedding anniversary, she did it at Oswald’s. When former prime ministers like Tony Blair and Boris Johnson book date nights with their wives? Oswald’s. Don’t believe us? You’ll have to take our word for it: The club has strict policies against taking photos and using social media accounts.

The Guest List

Of course David Beckham, Mrs. Beckham’s husband of 25 years, was there, as were their four children Romeo, Cruz, Harper and Brooklyn, who were all dressed in black and white. Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, didn’t attend but made it very clear she was sad to miss out via a gushy Instagram post .

Among the 100 invited guests were a constellation of Mrs. Beckham’s celebrity friends, including Tom Cruise, Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek, François-Henri Pinault, Marc Anthony, Guy Ritchie and Gordon Ramsay. Guests also included all four of Mrs. Beckham’s former Spice Girls bandmates: Geri Halliwell-Horner (Ginger), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty), Melanie Brown (Scary) and Emma Bunton (Baby).

The Entertainment

Party guests — and the internet — went into meltdown after Mr. Beckham, 48, posted a video on Instagram of his wife and the other Spice Girls dancing and singing to their 1997 hit single “Stop.”

“I mean come on,” Mr. Beckham captioned the 12-second video, his head bobbing up and down in front of the five women, who have not performed together publicly since the London Olympics in 2012. Mrs. Beckham later reposted the video on her own account, writing: “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much!” and accompanying the caption with the hashtag “Spice Up Your Life.”

According to The Daily Mail, tequila (Mrs. Beckham’s tipple of choice) was well and truly flowing. Mr. Cruise, 61, was said to be doing splits on the dance floor in the early hours, after helping up a photographer who tripped on the sidewalk earlier in the night. The Telegraph said that guests were treated to goody bags full of Victoria Beckham branded goods, including a candle and a fragrance.

Ms. Brown, better known as Scary Spice, hinted at a potential reunion for the Spice Girls when she reposted Mr. Beckham’s video on her Instagram Stories, writing: “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon.”

The clearest signs of a successfully spicy night could be found in the last paparazzi photos of Mrs. Beckham leaving her party at 2:30 a.m., in sunglasses, via a piggyback from her husband, who carried her straight into a waiting limo. No word to the press regarding headaches the following morning.

Tom Cruise is on a quest to preserve his career as an action hero as he approaches his 60th birthday in July, the film industry insider who masterminded his career told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview.

Retired showbusiness executive Eileen Berlin became Cruise's personal manager when he was an 18-year-old unknown actor desperately trying to hit the big time.

Now, 42 years later, Berlin, 86, is unveiling treasured photos taken during the four-and-a-half year period when she says she was a surrogate mother to the extraordinarily talented but troubled youth who went on to become Hollywood's highest-paid star.

Berlin explained how Cruise's now-infamous December 2020 expletive-ridden rant on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 stems from a hair-trigger temper that she first witnessed when he was a teenager.

One of his fits of rage, which she said were fueled by his father's bullying,  culminated in him turning a birthday present into a makeshift missile that struck her in the face.

Berlin said Cruise had also ordered her to type up 11 demands for his 1983 breakout role in Risky Business which gave an early glimpse into the controlling streak that dominates his behavior to this day.

The plastic surgery rumors that surround him in adulthood also make sense, according to the showbiz manager, who revealed Cruise had been so insecure about his looks that he took an entire day experimenting with poses for his first publicity headshot.

'Tommy had many faces – you see it in the photos,' Berlin said during an interview at the building on Manhattan's exclusive Upper East Side where she gave Cruise a home when he was a penniless, out-of-work actor.

Leafing through dozens of dusty black-and-white pictures snapped during his first publicity shoot, she said: 'There's contempt, arrogance, frustration, charm sadness. I saw him in all those moods.

'What I have never seen is a real display of happiness in Tommy. He was always very, very ambitious, very, very determined to be a star. And that made him a perfectionist.

'That's what drove him when I managed him and I'm sure that's what drives him now.'

Eileen and her late husband, Simon, met Tommy – as they nicknamed him – in 1980 when he was struggling to escape the scars of a dysfunctional childhood.

He was only 14 when his mother, Mary Lee, broke up with his father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III.

In a 2006 interview, Cruise said Mapother was a 'bully and a coward,' adding: 'He was the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life - how he'd lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang!'

Cruise briefly studied to be a priest at a Roman Catholic seminary in Ohio but reportedly was 'kicked out' after a prank in which he pilfered from a staff liquor cabinet with some other students.

Two years later, his mother remarried and he settled with his three sisters and their new stepfather, Jack South, in New Jersey, where he won a part in a high school production of 'Guys and Dolls' that kindled his new dream of a career in acting.

But the only work he landed was a bit part in the weepie 'Endless Love,' in which he played second fiddle to the star Brooke Shields.

'He told us he needed us to manage his career and find him a Hollywood agent,' Berlin recalled. 'He signed with us after his 18th birthday.'

But Cruise also needed somewhere to live, she added.

'He was trying to support himself by working as a waiter.

'He wasn't making enough money to rent a place so we told him he could move into our apartment. Our son was at college so we gave Tommy his room and when he needed a car he drove my husband's blue Cadillac.

'He was having some difficulties with his mom but she would come and visit him at our house or he'd use the car to see her in New Jersey.'

The new lodger charmed Eileen at first because he 'was sweet, respectful and mannerly to a fault' and 'always addressed me as "ma'am" and my husband as "sir," she said.

She was jarred, however, by his obsession with his appearance.

In a headshot of him taken at 18 that is displayed in her living room, he smiles boyishly and is neatly dressed in a jacket and collared shirt.

But he would prepare for photo sessions by parading in his underwear: 'We had a mirrored wall and he'd walk around in his little jockey shorts and nothing else and ball up his fists and flex his biceps and admire himself in the mirror,' Berlin said.

'I was embarrassed but he liked to show off his body. He had a great pride in it but he was working on perfection. He worried that he was only five foot seven. He said he would like some shoes that would lift him up a bit.'

Though he has denied having plastic surgery, he is rumored to have undergone a nose job, hair transplant and veneers on his teeth.

There was speculation about facial filler injections after he showed up looking puffy at a San Francisco baseball game.

Berlin said she wouldn't be surprised to learn if Cruise had surgery.

'Tommy has built an aura around himself. I think he will do whatever it takes to preserve his youthful image as long as possible and will fight anything that stands in his way.'

His first publicity shoot took a whole day as he struck up dozens of poses in outfits including a tank top and tight jeans.

'Other clients would have you take just one headshot but Tommy was intent on perfection,' the former manager said.

He finally settled on the decorous picture that Berlin has framed. She sent it to prospective agents and was thrilled when he was signed by one of the most influential firms in Hollywood, Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

Berlin said Cruise's meticulous and controlling tendencies were on full display when he was negotiating his contract for his first blockbuster, the 1983 teen sex comedy Risky Business, in which he co-starred with Rebecca De Mornay.

Berlin said she believes Cruise 'loves what he does' more than anything else and will do whatever it takes to preserve his youthful image as long as possible. He is pictured left accepting a Golden Globe award in 1997

His CAA representative, Laurie Perlman, was presented with a list of eleven demands, labelled 'Pre-Screen Deal,' that Berlin unveiled for the first time to DailyMail.com.

'I still remember how Tommy had me type them up,' she said, retrieving the faded single-spaced document from a dog-eared folder.

The list starts with his salary - '$75,000 pay or play.'

Filming was to take '10 weeks' with two weeks budgeted for rehearsals. He wanted 'first star billing….no-one gets larger billing….if the female lead has greater stature than Tom…then he gets second billing…..

'If they use a photo or drawing of anyone in the film then they must do the same for Tommy and larger.'

Cruise would be flown to the location 'first class round trip,' put up in a 'first class hotel and given the 'most favorable dressing room,' according to the list.

He had no qualms about calling the shots with Perlman. She was a power player who would go on to become a producer in an industry in which he was a newbie.

'He was very self centered. Everything revolved around "me",' Berlin said.

Risky Business grossed $63million – more than ten times its $6.2million budget.

Berlin said Cruise's infamous obscene rant in 2020 at the film crew on the London set of Mission: Impossible 7, exemplified another side of his personality.

In a recording leaked to The Sun, he was heard accusing his co-workers of breaking COVID-19 social distancing protocols.

'If I see you do it again, you're f**king gone!' he shouted. 'And if anyone in this crew does it, that's it. And you too and you too. And you, don't you ever f**king do it again…..We are creating thousands of jobs, you motherf***ers. That's it. No apologies.

'You can tell it to the people that are losing their f**king homes because our industry is shut down.

'We are not shutting this f**king movie down, is it understood? If I see it again, you're f**king gone.'

Some critics were astounded by the tirade. But others pointed out that lockdowns have delayed the release of the film and its sequel, Mission: Impossible 8, to 2023 and 2024 respectively. Cruise will be a week shy of his 62nd birthday by the time the eighth installment is released.

For a man who is as hung up as Cruise is with his looks, that is a disturbing prospect – and one that Berlin believes he is bound to take hard.

'Tommy had a terrible temper,' she claims. 'He harbored a lot of anger at his natural father. He was moody and would get angry in a snap of your fingers.

'It was like something was smoldering and it would boil up and explode. I put it down to his insecurity.

'I presented him with an album with all his publicity articles from teen magazines for his 19th birthday. He screamed, "I don't want to be in the teen mags".'

'He had told me he considered himself an adult, not a teen idol. He threw the album hard at me and it hit me on the cheek.'

The first major role that he landed while he was Eileen's protégé was as a military cadet in the 1981 movie Taps, co-starring with George C. Scott, Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn. He deliberately worked himself into a rage for one memorable sequence.

'He told me he locked himself into a closet and thought about someone raping his sister before he filmed a scene where he blasted a machine gun,' Berlin said.

She also recalled one incident when Cruise became infuriated after a server recognized him during a break from the shoot at Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania when he met Berlin and her husband for lunch.

'The waitress asked him "Aren't you one of the actors?" she said. 'Tom said to us, "Please tell her not to ask me any questions. I'm still in character".'

The last film for which she represented him was Top Gun, in which he played a hot-dog Navy pilot. It was the highest-grossing film of 1986, earning $176million at the box office.

Cruise and Berlin's professional relationship ended when he decided to cement his new superstar status by moving to Los Angeles.

Berlin said Cruise expected her to follow him on his journey and was crestfallen when she told him that it was impossible for her to desert her family and other clients in New York.

They kept in touch in the following years and during a dinner he mentioned that he was looking into the teachings of Scientology. Berlin later started to receive invitations to church events.

'I think Tommy was the perfect candidate for Scientology,' she said. 'He'd told me he didn't know anyone in LA and needed support. He didn't believe in therapy but he obviously needed help and Scientology was there for him.

Berlin said she wasn't surprised that all three of his marriages - to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes - ended in divorce.

'I was just shocked that he had three marriages and that they lasted as long as they did.

'I wish he had other things in his life. But I don't think he loves people. He loves what he does.

'I feel sad for him. I worry that he is lonely. As long as he can work and make his kind of films, he'll be okay. What will happen if ever he can't do that, I don't know.'

Tom Cruise Hits the Road in New 'Mission: Impossible 8' Set Images

Ethan Hunt is doing something dangerous for a change.

The Big Picture

  • Tom Cruise filmed a stunt scene for Mission: Impossible 8 in Middleton Mine, Derbyshire, UK.
  • The movie was initially titled Dead Reckoning: Part Two, but is now unnamed.
  • Director McQuarrie split the story into two parts for more character development and emotion.

Tom Cruise has been spotted in the United Kingdom, filming scenes for next year's Mission: Impossible 8 . The set photos show Cruise driving a jeep while filming—to the shock of nobody—what appears to be a stunt scene at the Middleton Mine in Derbyshire earlier in the week. The BBC reports that villagers in the surrounding areas have been informed that a film is being shot there, and that it would be used for what was described as a car chase sequence. Tarmac, the company that owns the mine, has previously offered out the site to production companies but did not confirm or deny what the film was when questioned.

The film has been back in production for a while in the UK, after the previous installment— Dead Reckoning —shot a large portion of the film in and around the Peak District and Derbyshire area, including a stunning steam train crash into a nearby quarry. Stars Simon Pegg and Hayley Atwell have also both shared photos on their personal Instagram accounts of nearby landmarks.

Is The New 'Mission: Impossible' Film 'Dead Reckoning Part Two'?

Originally entitled Dead Reckoning: Part Two , the film will be renamed. While "Part Two" is no longer in the title, director Christopher McQuarrie fully believes that this is the second of a two-part story, as he told Collider's Steve Weintraub at the film's premiere back in July.

"I knew I wanted to expand the cast, and I knew I wanted to give each one of those characters more to do, so I knew the movie was going to be bigger and longer than Fallout [ the previous movie]. And at which point I said, 'Why are we fighting this? Why are we going to try to jam this into two hours? Let's just break it in half and make it two movies.' That really was the rationale behind it being a two-part movie. It just it wasn't just that the story was bigger but that we wanted more emotion in the movie. At that time, the studio were actually very genuinely excited about it. And, you know, I think we were excited about it too. And then there were times when we were on set, and Tom would look at me, and he'd say, 'This was your idea. Just remember that.'”

Mission: Impossible's eighth installment is scheduled for release in May 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for updates and check out the new set images above.

The Very Mission: Impossible Reason Tom Cruise Was Able To Attend Victoria Beckham’s Big 50th Birthday

Tom Cruise reportedly tore up the dance floor and Victoria Beckham's birthday party.

Tom Cruise stands in a crowd wearing sunglasses in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

At this point, the impossible mission seems to be completing filming on two Mission: Impossible movies. Tom Cruise has technically been working on the two films for more than four years, and it seems there’s no end in sight. On the plus side, however, the fact that Cruise has been living in the UK while filming means that he was able to attend Victoria Beckham’s birthday party over the weekend, where he reportedly brought the house down.

Daily Mail reports that Cruise, a friend of David and Victoria Beckham, was in attendance at the former Spice Girl’s 50th birthday party, where he apparently left guests “dumbfounded” following a breakdancing routine that ended in the splits. Unfortunately, cameras were not allowed at the party, so there are no pictures of this epic dance routine. But the guests were likely only able to witness it because Cruise is still in the U.K. because the epic Mission: Impossible production isn’t yet over. At this point, we don't really know when it will all end.

We knew Tom Cruise could dance . From Risky Business to Tropic Thunder some of the actor’s most famous moments on screen that didn’t involve him putting his life on the line in crazy stunts have involved dancing, but at 61 not only is Cruise not slowing down when it comes to the best Mission: Impossible action scenes , but he’s still got the dance moves as well.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two Cast List

Tom Cruise Plane Stunt For Mission: Impossible 8

It was four years ago when Mission: Impossible 7 was set to get underway filming in Italy when that nation became one of the first outside of China to have a significant coronavirus outbreak. Venice went into lockdown and the production was put on hold. M:I 7 would then become one of the first movies to go back into production. But it was slow going, as the films would need to pause more than once due to their own virus issues, and the movie’s globetrotting caused several delays for required quarantines going into and out of various nations. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One alone took over three years to wrap production.

The Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two release date is currently set for May 25, 2025, more than a year from now. Unless the film sees yet another release date delay, then filming is likely close to being finished. Unless they need to do some final pickup shots in Tom Cruise’s garage again, of course. When the next Mission: Impossible movie does hit theaters it won’t just be the epic conclusion to a two-part adventure for Ethan Hunt, but the end of a years-long adventure for the entire cast and crew.

Tom Cruise's Scientology Obsession & 'Controlling' Ways Destroying His Dating Life: 'Women Find Him Too Intense'

Feb. 23 2023, Published 3:30 p.m. ET

Years ago, Tom Cruise was one of Hollywood's most sought after hunks, romancing the likes of Nicole Kidman , Cher and Penélope Cruz — but these days, not a single leading lady has show him any interest.

However, his dry spell isn't from a lack of trying, as an insider disclosed that while "Tom would love to have someone in his life ... the truth is his reputation just isn't great ."

First and foremost, "the whole Scientology thing is a turnoff for most women, and he can't exactly downplay it," the insider pointed out to Radar , noting the dad-of-three has been the face of the controversial religion for years. "He's very committed to it."

The source also said the three-time divorcee's big ego rubs people the wrong way, which is one of the reasons he and his last known flame, Hayley Atwell , fizzled out in 2020.

"His controlling ways got too much for her and she ended it," the source spilled of his Mission: Impossible costar. "He wants all the focus to be on him. He needs to be the star in any relationship."

Cruise's "controlling ways" also includes "micromanaging," as he'll allegedly dictate what clothes his plus-one can wear when they're out on the town.

"It's really off-putting," emphasized the insider. "A lot of women have walked away after a few dates. Women find him way too intense and he's turned into Hollywood's least eligible bachelor."

On the other hand, while the movie star was disappointed he didn't earn a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for Top Gun: Maverick , the massively successful flick — which is up for Best Picture — has given his career a resurgence.

"Tom may have moved out of Hollywood, but he’s back in the mix in the industry he adores and he’s finally feeling the love again. He’s telling people that this is his year," a confidante shared with a publication. "It doesn’t hurt that he’s now heading to the Oscars with a nod for such a huge blockbuster. Put it this way: Tom’s back on top."

Tom Cruise Is a London Boy

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Sometimes when God closes a door (Taylor Swift says “So long” ), She opens a window (Tom Cruise does the splits). Cruise is living that life in London, and for him that means break-dancing, doing the splits, and watching the British absolutely lose their crumpets. Cruise has lived in London since 2021 and has, in that time, been at the former queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the British Grand Prix, according to the Mercury News . And now he has attended the most British event of all: Posh Spice’s birthday party. Fortunately, he still has the American propensity to do the most. While at the party, Cruise began break-dancing and ended his routine by doing the splits, according to the Daily Mail . “People were absolutely dumbfounded,” a source mentioned. All we’ll say about that is that if there’s one thing the Mission: Impossible franchise could do to s ecure those Imax screens , it just might be a (gay?) club scene in which Cruise distracts the bad guys by jumping into the splits like a Drag Race contestant. Just an idea.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s Relationship Saga: Doomed From the Start?

Beset by rumors, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes seemed fated to split. Marlow Stern on what drove them apart.

“I think every little girl dreams about [her wedding]…I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.”

Katie Holmes shared these sentiments to Seventeen magazine back in October 2004. Six months after this public confession, Holmes began dating Cruise, and six months after that the couple revealed they were expecting their first child together.

Last Friday, news broke that the celebrity couple’s five-year marriage had come to an end , with Holmes filing for divorce from the Rock of Ages star on June 28 in New York, just five days shy of his 50th birthday, and requesting sole legal custody and “primary residential custody” of the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Suri, reported TMZ. The website reported that Cruise was “blindsided” by the news; he released a statement shortly after through his representative, saying, “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.”

The union of Cruise, 49, and Holmes, 33, however, seemed doomed from the start.

After 10 years of marriage, Cruise separated from his second wife, Nicole Kidman, in February 2001, while she was three months pregnant. (She would later have a miscarriage.) The two had adopted two children, Isabella Jane, born in December 1992, and Connor Antony, born in January 1995. The actor’s first wife was the actress Mimi Rogers, who was married to Cruise from 1987 to 1990 and was the one who introduced a young Cruise to Scientology, according to the BBC, though she reportedly later left the church .

“Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk,” Rogers, 56, told Playboy in 1993. “He thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument,” adding that hers “needed tuning” so they had to split.

Following Cruise’s split from Kidman, it was widely rumored that Cruise “auditioned” a series of actresses to play the role of his wife, including Penélope Cruz, fellow Scientologist Erika Christensen, and Scarlett Johansson, former Scientologist Marc Headley wrote in his book, Blown for Good: Behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology .

Johansson was all set to star alongside Cruise in Mission: Impossible III , but it was later reported that something more bizarre was at play: Cruise had allegedly invited Johansson to a Scientology center and proselytized to her for more than two hours before she excused herself. She eventually dropped out of the project due to “scheduling conflicts.”

It’s unclear how Cruise and Holmes met, but the 42-year-old actor eventually began dating the actress, then 26. They made their first public appearance in Rome on April 27, 2005, and one month later, Cruise made national headlines after jumping up and down on a couch like a man possessed on The Oprah Winfrey Show , declaring his love for the young actress.

That summer, Holmes, who was baptized a Roman Catholic, was out promoting her biggest role to date: the female lead in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins . Everywhere she went, however, she was reportedly accompanied by Jessica Rodriguez, an employee of the Church of Scientology, who sat in on all of her interviews. According to People , Holmes also dropped her longtime manager and changed representation at Creative Artists Agency, despite just landing the role of a lifetime, and stopped talking to many of her friends pre-Cruise.

“I’m really excited about [Scientology],” she told reporters in London on June 12, 2005. “I know how important it is to Tom, and I want to be able to share that with him.”

Robert Haskell, who wrote a widely read W magazine cover story on Holmes, said Rodriguez “was described to me as Holmes’s ‘Scientology chaperone’ and it was clear that she would be on hand during our interview despite my protests.” She even, wrote Haskell, answered several personal questions on Holmes’s behalf.

“I’ve found the man of my dreams,” Holmes told W . “From the moment I met him, it just felt like I’d known him forever. I was blown away. He’s the most incredible man. He’s so generous and kind, and he helps so many people, and, um, he makes me laugh like I’ve never laughed, and he’s a great friend…”

The couple announced they were expecting a child on Oct. 6, 2005, and, in an interview taped Oct. 30 with Barbara Walters, Cruise revealed he had purchased a sonogram machine to perform his own ultrasounds on his expectant fiancée, a move seen as dangerous by many obstetricians, reported MSNBC.

Cruise and Holmes welcomed their daughter, Suri, in April 2006 and on Nov. 18 of that year, were married in a Scientology ceremony at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. Fellow Scientologists John Travolta and Kelly Preston were in attendance, as were several celebrities who have denied reports they are members of the church, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and Victoria Beckham. Also there was Holmes’s alleged “Scientology chaperone” Jessica Rodriguez, as well as David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology, who served as Cruise’s best man.

Prior to their nuptials, however, TMZ reported that Holmes’s parents, both Catholic, were upset that the wedding would be a Scientology ceremony and even threatened a last-minute boycott.

In January 2006, at a premiere screening for Jason Reitman’s 2006 film Thank You For Smoking at the Sundance Film Festival, a sex scene between star Aaron Eckhart and Holmes, in which the actress appears topless, was mysteriously cut from the film. This reporter was in attendance, and Reitman apologized for the error after the screening. Meanwhile, there was rampant tabloid speculation that Cruise had used his considerable clout to have the scene removed.

Meanwhile, on Aug. 22, 2006, following a barrage of Cruise backlash from the media, including the Oprah couch-jumping incident, his infamous on-air tussle with Today ’s Matt Lauer over psychiatry, and various stories in the press emphasizing Cruise’s Scientology beliefs, Paramount announced it was ending its 14-year partnership with Cruise, with Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone blamed Cruise’s public behavior and views, reported CNN . The effect wasn’t lost on Holmes, who also reportedly found herself being shunned by Hollywood over Cruise’s outlandish behavior, including failing to reach a deal on The Dark Knight , the sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins , reported The Daily Mail . The actress blamed scheduling reasons; the film went on to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

In November 2007, the National Enquirer ran a cover story on an alleged 100-page “marriage contract” between Cruise and Holmes. According to the Enquirer , by reaching the one-year milestone Holmes would be guaranteed $70 million, and if the marriage lasted five years, she’d get an estimated $10 million extra.

Two months later, on Jan. 15, 2008, as Holmes’s and Cruise’s careers seemed to be in free-fall, a bizarre video produced by the Church of Scientology and featuring Cruise defending his beliefs made its way to YouTube but was subsequently pulled amid charges by the church that it was pirated and edited.

Reports of Cruise and Holmes sparring over his Scientology beliefs were rampant throughout their marriage, and in October 2009, The Daily Mail reported that Holmes had “won a battle” to enroll their daughter, Suri, in a Catholic preschool in Massachusetts.

Two years later, an October 2011 cover story in New Idea , an Australian gossip magazine, alleged that Holmes “stormed out” on Cruise following allegations that the Church of Scientology was spying on Hollywood stars. The Village Voice , meanwhile, had recently conducted an exhaustive investigation and reported that the Church of Scientology was spying on South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone because of an episode of the show that poked fun at the religion, “Trapped in the Closet,” that aired in 2005.

TMZ and numerous other gossip sites are reporting that Scientology was the “breaking point” in Holmes’s marriage to Cruise, saying she was fearful of Suri’s future. (Scientology becomes more involved in a child’s life at the age of 6, reported TMZ.) Cruise had just spoken candidly about his firm belief in Scientology in the June 2012 issue of Playboy . More troublingly, TMZ also reported that Holmes believes the Church of Scientology now views her as “a threat” and has been spying on her since the divorce filing, with a white Cadillac Escalade and black Mercedes SUV seen near her New York City apartment for the past week. (The church denies it is conducting surveillance on the actress.)

Holmes is entitled to about $15 million in the divorce, under the terms of their 2006 prenuptial agreement, reported Time , including $3 million for each year the couple was married up to a maximum of $33 million. She’ll also receive the couple’s home in Montecito, Calif. If the marriage had lasted more than 11 years, Holmes would be entitled to half of Cruise’s estimated $250 million fortune, said Time . And, if Holmes succeeds in winning sole custody of their daughter, Suri, she’ll also be entitled to substantial child support payments.

Oddly enough, Cruise’s relationships ended with all three of his wives—Rogers, Kidman, and Holmes—when the actresses were the same age: 33.

Tom Cruise put the cast of Top Gun: Maverick through “gruelling” flight training while preparing to shoot the film.

The much-delayed film sees Cruise reprise the role of US naval aviator Pete Mitchell and is being released 36 years after the 1986 original.

In behind-the-scenes footage from the movie, Cruise explained how the cast undertook “challenging”, “all-encompassing” aviation training for the film – at his request.

“We worked with the Navy and the Top Gun school to formulate how to shoot it practically,” Cruise said, adding: “Because if we’re gonna do it, we’re gonna fly in the F-18s.”

The actors learnt how to operate the cameras while inside the jets, with Cruise saying: “I had to really teach them cinematography and the lighting so they understood what’s gonna look good on camera… I’m very proud of what we all accomplished. Each one of them are extraordinary.”

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer continued: “The aviation sequences had to be real, so our actors went through three months of gruelling training.” Footage showed the cast flying high-speed planes and taking part in a “challenging” underwater programme.

Actor Monica Barbaro explained that “Tom designed this all-encompassing aviation training for all the actors”.

“Everybody thought it would be impossible for the actors to really be in the jets,” said Whiplash star Miles Teller, with Glen Powell adding: “But that’s the gift that Tom gave us, that by the time we got up there, we could handle it.”

Top Gun: Maverick is released in UK cinemas on 25 May.

Nicole Kidman Shut Down A Journalist’s “Sexist” Question About Her Ex-Husband Tom Cruise After Reflecting On The Media Obsession With Their Marriage

“That’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. ... I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”

Leyla Mohammed

BuzzFeed News Staff

As you might recall, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise ’s decadelong marriage was one of the most highly publicized relationships of the ‘90s.

obsession tom cruise

The media was enthralled by their marriage , which lasted from 1990 to 2001, with the pair seemingly making headlines every day.

obsession tom cruise

However, things came to an end in February 2001 after Tom filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Much like their marriage, the pair’s split was widely scrutinized by the media.

For years, Nicole and Tom — who share two children, Isabella, 29, and Connor, 26, whom they adopted while they were married — largely kept the details of their divorce private.

Well, it’s safe to say that Nicole was not pleased this week, after she was unexpectedly asked about Tom during an interview.

obsession tom cruise

Speaking with the Guardian about her latest release, Being the Ricardos , Nicole, who portrays Lucille Ball in the biopic, talked about the movie’s depiction of her character’s relationship with Desi Arnaz.

“It’s about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out,” Nicole said . “But from it come some extraordinary things. And I love that. I love that it’s not a happy ending.”

obsession tom cruise

“This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever. Yeah, that’s really gorgeous,” she continued.

Nicole went on, “You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with.”

obsession tom cruise

“And I think that’s all very relatable,” she added. "You may have kids with them. You may not, but they were very much in love."

Nicole’s answer prompted the journalist, Eva Wiseman , to ask if the Big Little Lies actor had been referring to her past marriage to Tom.

And Nicole — who became “angry,” the reporter noted — didn’t hesitate to shut down the speculation.

obsession tom cruise

“Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No,” Nicole responded. “I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no.”

obsession tom cruise

She continued, “And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”

Nicole’s response has been met with praise across social media, with many users jumping online to share their support for the actor.

One person labeled the journalist’s question as “ tacky, tired [and] toxic ,” while another called it “ unnecessary and disappointing .”

“Glad Nicole Kidman checked this. Tom Cruise? That was 20 yrs ago!” read one tweet .

Nicole’s latest comments come just months after she candidly reflected on the huge media obsession with her and Tom’s marriage, in a wide-ranging interview with Harper's Bazaar this September.

obsession tom cruise

When asked if she felt discouraged by the media scrutiny around her and Tom’s divorce, Nicole responded , “I was young. I think I offered it up?”

obsession tom cruise

“Maybe I’ve gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible,” she laughed. “I just prefer to live in the world that way. ... I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt.”

“But at the same time, I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shut-down approach,” she said.

Nicole continued, “My husband, Keith [Urban, whom she married in 2006], says that when he met me, he said, ‘How’s your heart?’ And I apparently responded, ‘Open.’”

Recently, Nicole, 54, also opened up about facing ageism and sexism in the Hollywood industry.

obsession tom cruise

“There’s a consensus in the industry that as a female actor, at about 40, you're done,” Nicole said in an interview with Dujour last week, while discussing some of her latest projects.

obsession tom cruise

“I never sat in a chair and heard someone say, ‘You’re past your due date,’ but I’ve had times where you’re turned down and the door is shut on you,” she continued. “It’s definitely changing and moving, but that’s what Being the Ricardos is about.”

Is Tom Cruise obsessed with his looks? Here’s what his manager has to say

Tom Cruise’s ex-manager has revealed the Hollywood legend’s obsession with his looks, calling him an ‘insecure’ perfectionist.

Image: Getty Images

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is on a pursuit to preserve his profession as an action hero as he turns 60 this year in July, said his first manager who shaped his career in the film industry.

Tom Cruise’s first manager Eileen Berlin is a retired showbiz executive. She was his personal manager when the actor, at an age of 18, was trying to make it big in the industry. After 42 years, Tom’s 86-year-old ex-manager revealed how he used to obsess over his looks while speaking to Daily Mail in an interview.

ALSO READ:  Jack Reacher author Lee Child reveals why Tom Cruise didn’t impress the book readers in the film

Eileen Berlin said that Tom Cruise, whom she lovingly called ‘Tommy’, had many faces. “There's contempt, arrogance, frustration, charm sadness,” she said. Tom, at the age of 18, used to live with his manager in New York and worked as a waiter before he became the highest-paid actor in Hollywood.

The 59-year-old actor, as Eileen Berlin says, was “very, very ambitious” in his early days. It was this that contributed to the controlling and meticulous tendencies that he has possessed as an actor.

Eileen Berlin also said that the plastic surgery rumours that surrounded Tom Cruise, could possibly be true as she revealed that he was so insecure about his looks that he took one complete day to experiment with poses for the first headshot he had to give for his publicity. She also said that it was his ambitious nature and determination to become a star that made him a “perfectionist”.

Speaking of Tom Cruise’s obsession with his looks, Eileen Berlin said that it was his obsession with his appearance that jarred her. She said that he would walk across the house in his underwear and would flex his biceps in front of the mirror they had put up on a wall. She said that even though she would get embarrassed, Tom would like to show off his body.

Tom Cruise was also worried about his height being five foot seven inches, so much so that Eileen Berlin said that he once said he would like to have shoes “that would lift him up a bit”. Despite his denial, the actor is rumoured to have undergone the knife for his nose, hair and also veneers on his teeth. To this, his manager said that she would not feel surprised if he did undergo plastic surgery.

Tom Cruise's Obsession With Motorcycles Is Still Going Strong After All These Years

You know Tom Cruise. Well, you may not know him personally, but surely you're aware of him from that one movie? The one where he feels a need for speed ? Ok, what about the films in the Mission  Impossible franchise? Knight and Day ? Oblivion ? Risky Business ? Surely, this is ringing a bell.

Those who are familiar with Tom Cruise's portfolio will know that he likes to perform his own stunts, particularly ultra-daring motorcycle stunts . Therefore, it's not shocking at all to learn that he has an impeccable collection of personal motorcycles.

Here are a few of the most notable motorcycles that the Hollywood daredevil has ridden. From his own personal collection to the bikes that he hand picks to be in movies with him, it's clear that Tom Cruise has impeccable taste in motorcycles.

The Birthday Vyrus

When your net worth is somewhere around $480 million, you can afford to buy yourself a nice birthday present. At least, that appears to be the case with the nearly $104,000 Vyrus 987 C3 4V Tom rode for his 51st birthday in 2013.

Terms like "most powerful" and "most expensive" are associated with the production motorcycle, but of course, most records were made to be broken. Hailing from Italy, the Vyrus 987 C3 4V has a 1.2L engine that is able to hit 209 miles per hour. Given its lightweight frame, that should satisfy most people's need for speed.

The Ducati Motorcycles

There are at least two Ducati motorcycles associated with Hollywood legend Tom Cruise. There's the grey Ducati 999R he gifted himself for his 46th birthday. Only 200 of this model were produced, making it a truly special present, indeed. That makes it horrifying on many levels to note that the Ducati 999R was the bike he almost wrapped around a tree in Los Angeles.

Then there's the Ducati Desmosedici RR. Again, a limited edition, with only 1,000 of these bikes produced.  Cruise generously took Knight and Day co-star Cameron Diaz for a ride on his Desmosedici RR during filming. Considering this bike costs around $72,500 and can easily hit 200 miles per hour, that must have been an impressive Sunday drive.

The Kawasakis from Top Gun

In the first Top Gun film, Tom Cruise was seen riding around on mesmerizing Kawasaki GPZ900r. In true Cruise fashion, he performed his own motorcycle stunts, including racing a fighter jet. At the time, this was the first and only bike to cross the 150 MPH threshold, so this isn't necessarily as irrational as it may seem, though it's probably not something most riders need to try. You'll at least have to sign a waiver.

Though early reports indicated the Kawasaki GPZ900r was coming back for Top Gun 2: Maverick , early press indicates that the role of Tom Cruises's super-sweet bike will be played by a Kawasaki Ninja H2R. This is the track-ready version of Kawasaki's Ninja H2, and yes, it's the one that casually zoomed up to 248 miles per hour in just 26 seconds. Definitely fighter jet racing material for the new millennium.

All of the Amazing Mission Impossible Bikes

Tom Cruise doesn't necessarily own every bike he has ever ridden in the Mission Impossible  movie series, but popular legend has it that he had input into which motorcycles made it onscreen. It stands to reason that doing your own stunts gives you that kind of privilege.

In Mission Impossible 2 , Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise, of course) tools around on a 1999 Triumph Speed Triple. This was the Sports Bike to have in the 1990s. Not only could it speed around at over 140 miles per hour, it was actually designed with the rider in mind. You might not immediately think "road trip" while watching Cruise leave the bad guy on the Daytona in the dust, but the idea isn't...impossible.

The next installment in the franchise, Mission Impossible 3 , starred a Triumph Bonneville Scrambler. This bike was custom-built for the movie, and allegedly auctioned off afterwards. You'll notice this bike is a bit more rugged, compared to the other bikes. The chrome. The vintage styling. It's essentially made to be stared at.

Honorable Mention goes the Confederate Hellcat Tom Cruise rode to the premiere of Mission Impossible 3 . In keeping with the "rugged and manly" theme, this 121-horsepower, 140 lb/ft torque bike is a force to be reckoned with, and has gained the stamp of approval from another Hollywood motorcycle fan, Brad Pitt.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is the fifth installment in the Impossible Film series, and the black BMW S1000 RR goes along with it. This is definitely back on track with the racing bikes, as the BMW S1000 RR was international speed superstar Michael Dunlop's ride for many a road race.

If you haven't seen Mission Impossible: Fallout , you don't want to know what happens to the BMW R nine T Scrambler. When you do watch it, just remember that not everything in the movies is real. The BMW R nine T Scrambler is absolutely real; in fact, with a starting price just around $14,000, you can custom design your own.

So what kind of motorcycles can we expect in Mission Impossible 7 ? Director Christopher McQuarrie has teased a few photos of a motorcycle jump, and a lot of things flying through the air independently off a cliff, but sadly, the teaser is just that. More details will surely follow.

In the meantime, we can expect Tom Cruise to continue to choose the best, the most powerful, and naturally the most expensive motorcycles for himself, Maverick, and Ethan Hunt. And, once our collective jealousy subsides, maybe we can get organized and start writing up that bucket list of bikes to try.
