Yes, you can: 8 tips for strategically booking your first stopover
Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .
When you search for airfare from your home airport to your destination airport, you're getting an inflated price. Search engines just show you whatever predetermined fares the airlines have decided it costs to get you there, along with connections that are often either rushed and hectic or long and boring in places you're not interested in going.
I book one-way flights almost exclusively. One great reason is to build fun stopovers into your route. It can give you the opportunity to turn one vacation into many -- while saving several hundred dollars in airfare. There's a science to it.

I'll show you the tools that make it easy for you to sniff out a cheap route to your destination while adding exciting stopovers.
What is a stopover?
When most people plan for a trip, they're only focused on point A and point B. Any extra stops in between are a hassle. Here are some helpful definitions of what happens to you on the way to your vacation:
- Connection : Any point during your journey when you have to stop at an airport that isn't your origin or destination. If your flight isn't nonstop, you've got a connection. Common parlance implies that these are normal, unremarkable stops (not hours and hours long).
- Layover : This definition is more rigid. For domestic flights, a layover is a connection lasting less than four hours. If you're flying internationally, a layover is any connection less than 24 hours.
- Stopover : If flying domestically, a stopover is any connection lasting more than four hours. If flying internationally, a stopover is any connection lasting more than 24 hours
Stopovers can either be really, really inconvenient (spending an extended period of time wandering the airport corridors), or very enriching (leaving the airport for some tourism in a city other than your destination). The latter is what this post is about.
When you build a stopover into your travels, you can make them for as long as you want (months, even!). It's a fun way to turn a boring commute into a hopscotch of bucket-list items -- and if you know the strategy, you can do it while paying far less for airfare than had you gone straight to your final destination.
Example: Building stopovers to Europe
As our example, I'll search from my home airport of Cincinnati to the island of Malta. The lowest price I can find is in early October for $952 round-trip. As you can see from the below screenshot, that's quite low. Google even claims the price is $1,240 cheaper than usual (that seems a bit steep). No matter, we can handily beat this price -- and throw in three or more fun stopovers while we're at it.
Google Flights has this really cool map search function that allows you to enter an origin airport but not a destination. If you're unfamiliar with Google Flights, read our Google Flights guide to become an instant expert. Just as a refresher, here's how it works:
- Input your home airport
- Leave the destination blank and click "Search"
- Make your dates flexible by clicking "Trip in the next 6 months"
- See the cheapest destinations around the world from your home airport
With this tool, you can basically mine cheap routes from any city. Once you figure out the notably inexpensive routes, you'll just have to play with dates to find the best prices. Let's walk through it.
Related: Guide to Google Flights
Step 1. Search hubs from your home airport
Note that this entire post will be a series of one-way searches.
Enter your home airport to see cheap routes from your origin. My home airport is Cincinnati. I simply leave the destination blank, search with flexible dates, and then slide that price filter (left side of the page) as low as it will go to search flights costing $50 and under.
My results are below. These flights will almost certainly be nonstop. I've highlighted hub airports I wouldn't mind having as a stopover: New York, Miami, San Francisco and Washington, DC. I'll keep these four airports in mind as I'll need them in step 3.
Step 2. Search hubs from your destination airport
I'm now repeating step 1 except I'm searching from my destination (Malta) instead of my home airport. I'm looking to see which cities offer cheap service to Malta. There are plenty -- most of Europe is super cheap once you get to the continent. I've again noted some fun options that I'd enjoy as a stopover, like Edinburgh, Vienna, Porto and Rome.
Step 3. Search routes between your stopover-worthy cities
Another fun feature of Google Flights is that you can search up to five origin airports at once. I'll now enter my choice stopover destinations from step 1 (Miami, New York, Chicago) into Google Flights, but again keep the destination blank. I'll then swing the map over to Europe to see any potential cheap transatlantic routes. I put the price filter at $300 or under, as that's all I'm willing to pay.
This instantly gives me hundreds of permutations between all airports in Europe. Now all I have to do is cross-reference the cheapest European airports with the airports that fly to Malta and then choose the one I want to visit the most.
As you can see, the cheapest flight to Europe is to Porto, Portugal. Clicking on the city reveals that the flight originates in Newark. For $167, I'll gladly make a stop in Portugal, the magical land of castles, wine and cobblestone streets.
Step 4. Enter your route into the Google Flights multi-city tool
The above steps have led me to the following itinerary:
- Cincinnati to Newark
- Newark to Porto
- Porto to Malta
I know it's possible to score a deal on all these routes. I'll pull up Google Flights again, and input these airports into the multi-city tool. Dates don't matter yet.
Step 5. Check the dates for each leg separately
The next step is to check all three legs separately to find a cheap date for each. This may be the most time-intensive portion of your research, though I don't find it to be a burden (it's actually fun). Just open a separate tab for each leg and pull up Google Flights to do your pricing.
My first leg is Cincinnati to New York. I've highlighted the cheapest dates in yellow. After I find the cheap fare I want, I'll look at the flights from New York to Portugal and Portugal to Malta. I'll tinker with the dates until the prices are low across the board and the time spent at each stopover is to my liking.
Step 6. Plug the cheap dates into your multi-city itinerary
Once you find your dates, head back over to your tab with the multi-city search and begin plugging in your dates. From Cincinnati to New York, I chose October 4. It's the cheapest date at $69 one-way.
Step 7. Book your ticket
After you've figured out how long you'd like to stay at each destination (along with low prices), you can view your final ticket price and book! The below one-way route from Cincinnati to Malta costs $260 (before any baggage fees). That's about $400 cheaper than simply searching for a one-way flight from Cincinnati to Malta.
Step 8. Use the same process to get home
You can use this exact same strategy for your return flight as well -- though it would be understandable if you tried to find the most direct route home after all that traveling.
After spending a few days in Malta, I built-in a four-day stopover in Paris, which set me up for a super cheap transatlantic flight back to New York. I tried to keep that connection as small as possible, as I'd already had a stopover in New York on my outbound journey. New York was just a necessary evil to cross the ocean for cheap.
Total cost for a round-trip?
The total cost of this ticket is $629 (plus potential bag fees, depending on the airline). That's $323 cheaper than that fare to Malta we looked at earlier -- a 34% savings! And if you're traveling with a friend or family member, you'd collectively save nearly $650. Plus, you get free visits to:
For the same price, I could have strategically tossed in a few more destinations like Las Vegas, Italy, Lanzarote and London. That's even further removed from reality for the average traveler, though. Trying to keep it plausible over here.
Beware of booking flights too close together
Yes, booking your own routes can save several hundred dollars over allowing the airline to work it out for you. But you're destined to spend a lot of money at your stopover cities.
If you're purely trying to save money on the way to your destination (i.e. not interested in side-trips), you'll have to schedule each leg closely together. The biggest caveat here is that if one flight is delayed for some reason, you could miss a series of future flights. Remember, you'll have to re-check your bags and go back through airport security for each flight.
Related: Best credit cards with trip delay reimbursement in 2021
Build time for complications into your itinerary. And be sure to use a credit card with travel insurance to buy your flights in case of trip delays or cancellations.
Search by city, not by airport
Google Flights allows you to enter city names instead of just airports. By entering the city, you'll find discounts you otherwise wouldn't have if you'd just typed in the airport code. For example, instead of typing in CDG for flights to Paris, you can just type "Paris," and Google Flights will search for routes that include other airports that serve the Paris area:
Some of these airports specialize in low-cost carriers, so you'll often see lower fares that don't fly to Charles de Gaulle, the main airport serving Paris.
The same goes for any city served by multiple airports. Type New York instead of JFK, San Francisco instead of SFO, London instead of LHR, etc.
Use miles and points for the outbound or return
Hopping around is fun -- for a while. But if you've built a load of stopovers into your outbound journey, you may just want to get home without any extra hassle. In that case, use miles to book a flight home from whatever obscure airport you're at to whatever obscure airport you're from.
For example, a flight from Malta to Cincinnati (generally) costs 30,000 American Airlines miles and ~$110 in taxes and fees. Yeah, that means you'll only save $257 over the return itinerary we pieced together -- and you won't get a stopover in Paris -- but it's effortless, and there's nothing to think about. American will carry your travel-weary cadaver all the way back to your bed at home.

How to avoid the worst low-cost airlines
Some of these fares are ridiculously cheap. Like, fly across Europe for $12 cheap. The problem is that some airlines often nickel-and-dime you; sometimes it feels like they go out of their way to make your trip miserable, whether it's charging to use the bathroom, lambasting you with advertisements or meticulously designing seats for optimum discomfort.
If flying Ryanair is out of the question for you, narrow your search by clicking the "Airlines" tab at the top of the Google Flights search map and checking all the alliances. Most low-cost carriers aren't part of an alliance.
Skyscanner is a good supplementary tool
Similar to Google Flights, Skyscanner allows you to search for flights to anywhere, as well. It's a little more functional than Google's tool in a couple of ways:
- You can search for flights to everywhere nearly a year into the future with Skyscanner. Google Flights only allows for flexible dates up to six months in advance
- Your origin can be broad with Skyscanner. For example, you can type in "United States," whereas Google requires an actual origin airport
This can be a good tool for finding the long legs of your journey. If you enter the U.S. as the origin and Europe as the destination and then select the "Cheapest month," it'll give you a very digestible list of European destinations, sorted by price. Click on the destination to see the specific route.

Bottom line
You can easily save hundreds of dollars by locating a series of cheap one-way flights to reach your destination -- and swing by a few other enchanting locations while you're at it. Be sure to book your flights with a travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which covers you in case your flights are canceled or delayed. It's also got a 60,000-point bonus after spending $4,000 within the first three months of account opening. That's worth $1,200 in travel, per TPG valuations (and a ton more if you know how to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards for maximum value ).

The Top Services to Find Road Trip Stopover Spots

Whatshalfway.com
Roadtrippers.
While planning a road trip usually begins with a starting location and a destination, the real work starts when it comes to figuring out where to stop, what to see, and how to get there. Your favorite GPS application might show you the quickest route from point A to point B, but that isn't necessarily the best route. Luckily, several different websites and apps can help you design your perfect road trip .
Some of them are best for finding the halfway point between two places so you can split up the trip, while others focus on highlighting the most interesting or unique points of interest. After all, a road trip is all about the journey, and you'll find so many places to stop with these resources that you won't want the adventure to end.
Offering route information for 45 countries, Whatshalfway.com is a simple website that provides your route's midway point as well as suggestions for places to stay, restaurants, and things to do along the route. Simply input your starting and ending point, any cities you want to pass through on the way, and add as many stops as you please. There are also options to avoid tolls and/or highways.
The website will automatically route the trip with evenly spaced suggested stops along the way. The "Click here to find a venue" link will open a new page with all nearby businesses, but these are drawn directly from Google maps so there may not be any businesses, restaurants, or accommodations that suit your personal needs. There's also no way to export or share the list.
You can use MeetWays to find the halfway point between two addresses, with the option to add one point of interest (like a hotel, movie theater, or restaurant). It's available in over 30 countries and displays a list of businesses relevant to your selected point of interest (or a list of nearby restaurants if you leave the point of interest field blank.) However, if you only need the halfway point MeetWays works in an additional how 115 countries
If you want to take the scenic route, you can easily change the settings to avoid highways or toll roads. Routes are easy to share via email or social media but there's no way to edit your starting and ending points nor is there a way to accommodate multiple stops.
Sometimes you just need to find the nearest pitstop that has gas, a bathroom, a decent place to eat, or some combination of the above. The website iExit is perfect for all of that and more. But it shines brightest when you use the mobile app while already on the road.
Easy-to-read images show what's offered at each exit on the interstate you're currently on, making it easy to plan out your pitstops before taking an exit. See gas prices, accommodation options, Wi-Fi availability, and restaurants all conveniently compiled on one page. You can either type in your starting point and destination to see pitstops along the route or use the GPS feature on your phone to find the nearest exits to your current location.
Travelmath will appeal to travelers who like to plan for all aspects of their trips. Simply input in your two cities and Travelmath will tell you the biggest cities or most popular destinations to stop in along the way, along with the distance and time between each one. It will even calculate the estimated cost of driving!
If you aren't sure if taking a car is the right option for your trip, it will also give you a side-by-side comparison of flights and driving details to help you chose the best method.
If you care less about the halfway point and more about the best places to stop, then Roadtrippers is what you're looking for. It's available as a website and mobile app, so you can easily plan from home or while on the road. Just punch in Point A and Point B into the application and Roadtrippers will show you what routes are available plus highly rated points of interest, restaurants, cafes, and hotels along the way.
The site and app are both free to use, but you can pay for a premium version to unlock even more features such as offline use, adding more than five stops, and collaborating with friends.

How-To Geek
How to plan a road trip with multiple destinations in google maps.
Map out multiple destinations in Google Maps on the web or in the app.
Quick Links
Add multiple stops using the website, add multiple stops using the mobile app.
Whether you're planning a day out on the town, or want to orchestrate the perfect road trip across the country, Google Maps allows you to add up to nine stops, excluding your starting point, when you make directions from both the website and the Maps app. Here's how you do it.
First, open up your browser and head on over to Google Maps. Click the "Directions" button to the right of the search bar.
By default, Maps will use your device's location for the starting point. If you want this to be a different location, enter it now.
Next, enter the location of your first destination into the field provided, and then hit Enter. Alternatively, you can click any location on the map to get the same results.
Make sure you have either the driving or walking option selected, as Maps only lets you make multiple destinations with these two travel modes.
To add another destination, all you have to do is click either the "+" or the space below your first destination, and then start typing a new location. You can repeat this to add up to nine total stops. If you have more stops than is allowed, you may need to make another map from where you left off.
If at any point you decide you want to change up the order of your destinations, just drag any location up or down on the list using the circles on the left.
And once you've created your map in your web browser, you can click the "Send directions to your phone" link to send it to your mobile device by email or text message. Assuming you've got the Google Maps app installed, you can open it right up.
If you want to optimize your travel, you can also turn a multi-stop Google Maps trip into a round-trip .

What is a round-trip flight?
What is a one-way flight, when booking cash tickets, when redeeming points and miles, consider booking open-jaw flights.
Are round-trip flights cheaper? The short answer is that it depends . Where you’re traveling to and if you’re paying with cash or miles are the biggest factors in the equation.
For instance, if you’re traveling between the U.S. and Europe and paying in cash, it's cheaper to book a round-trip flight. But if you’re paying for that same flight with miles, the price of two one-way tickets will most often be the same as a round-trip flight (though the taxes paid may vary).
There are other considerations besides just price when comparing round-trip versus one-way flights. Travelers might be surprised to find that booking a round-trip award flight could lead to issues if you have a change in plans mid-trip.
Here's a look at options to weigh when booking round-trip versus one-way flights and answers to some frequently asked questions.
» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now
When you book a round-trip flight, it means you travel from Destination A to Destination B and you return back to Destination A from Destination B. Both flights are booked as one ticket.
So when you’re purchasing the ticket, you select your origin, destination, departure and return date. You make one payment, whether it's with cash or miles.
» Learn more: How to book a flight
A one-way flight, in contrast, is a ticket booked with no return. So you’re only booking a flight from Destination A to Destination B. You can purchase a second, separate ticket from Destination B back to Destination A (should you so choose). One-way flights can be booked with cash or miles.
These types of flights are a good option for those who don’t know their return date, are only traveling in one direction or booking an open-jaw itinerary .
» Learn more: The best days to book a flight and when to fly
When booking flights paid in cash, our recommendation is pretty simple: Book the option that's cheapest for your trip. If a round-trip flight is cheaper than two one-way flights, there's no reason to book two one-way flights.
If two one-way flights are the same price as a round-trip, it might make sense to book the one-way flight (as long as you don’t mind keeping track of the two separate reservations). Even though many airlines have eliminated change fees , it's much easier to change — or even cancel — a flight when there’s only one flight on the reservation to make a change to.
If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., the cost of two one-way flights will usually be the same as a round trip; however, when flying internationally, it can be much more expensive to book two one-way tickets.
Sample flight within the U.S.
In this example flight search on American Airlines , booking two one-way tickets from Newark to Miami will cost $154 for the outgoing flight and $124 for the return, for a total of $278.
Outgoing flight
Return flight
If you were to book these two flights as a round-trip ticket, the price would be exactly the same at $278.
Sample international flight
It's a different ball game with international flights.
Take a look at this flight search from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany, on United Airlines . If you were to book the flights as two one-way tickets, it would cost you $3,110.
However, if you book these same flights as part of a round-trip ticket, you’d have to pay $1,783, representing a significant savings over booking two one-way flights.
» Learn more: Should I be loyal to a single airline?
If you're planning on using points and miles to book award flights, you have a different set of factors to consider. In the case of award travel, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award.
Two one-way awards offer more flexibility
Most U.S. airlines have dropped change fees on both award and paid flights. So, if the price is the same, consider booking two one-way awards instead of a round-trip award to gain extra flexibility. Keep in mind that if you book a round trip, depending on the airline, you may have difficulty getting your miles redeposited if you need to change your award ticket after taking the first leg of the flight.
For example, if you cancel a United award flight midtrip, you'll retain the miles as a future flight credit. While the miles won't be refunded to your account, you'll have the chance to use them in the future.
Watch for higher taxes and fees when booking two one-way awards
When considering whether to book round-trip versus one-way awards, it's important to price out both options — particularly when flying overseas. Some airlines charge higher taxes and fees for awards that originate in certain regions of the world.
Delta SkyMiles is infamous for charging higher fees for award flights that originate in Europe. Also, particularly for international flights, Delta will often price round-trip award flights at less than the cost of two one-way awards.
For example, take a round-trip award from New York to Paris. Delta charges 50,000 SkyMiles plus $85 in taxes and fees for a round-trip main cabin award.
However, if you book the same flights as two one-way awards, you'll pay a total of 74,000 SkyMiles plus roughly $220 in taxes and fees. The outbound award costs 37,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees. Then, you'll need to pay another 37,000 SkyMiles plus around $220 to fly home.
In a situation like this, it makes sense to book a round-trip award. You'll save on miles and out-of-pocket costs.
Consider change fees on award flights
Most U.S. airlines have eliminated change fees on both paid flights and award tickets. However, that's not the case with all mileage programs. If you're booking through a mileage program that charges change fees, you may want to book a round-trip award to reduce the fees you could pay if you need to cancel the trip.

Say you're considering flying to Europe to take a cruise from Budapest to Munich. One might assume that your only options are to:
Book a round-trip flight into one of the cities plus book a one-way intra-Europe flight between them.
Book two one-way flights — one-way into Budapest and one-way back from Munich.
However, there's a third option: booking an "open-jaw" flight . Many airlines will let you book a flight into Budapest and a flight back from Munich on the same ticket. Rather than pricing these flights as two one-way flights, the airline generally prices the flights similar to a round-trip.
» Learn more: The guide to open-jaw flights with Chase points
If you're using airline miles to book these flights, check to see if it's cheaper to book two one-way awards or an open-jaw award. As outlined in the Delta example above, award flights originating in Europe can have much higher taxes and fees. So it might make sense to book the two award segments together as a multicity award.
In the past, airlines charged more for booking two one-way flights rather than a round-trip on the same route. However, this isn't the case anymore on most domestic flights and even some international flights — mostly thanks to competition from low-cost carriers.
In short, airlines charge more for one-way flights on the routes when they can get away with doing so. If only one airline is operating a particular route, it might increase the price of one-way flights to generate more revenue from business travelers and others that are willing to pay more for the nonstop flight.
However, when there's competition from other airlines, the cost of one-way flights often drops to compete with the other airlines serving that route.
Booking a round-trip flight can be cheaper than booking one-way tickets on the same flights. Before booking two one-way flights, check the round-trip price to see if it's cheaper. Even if you're flying out of a different city than you're flying into, booking a so-called "open-jaw" flight could be much cheaper than booking two one-way flights.
Most U.S. airline loyalty programs will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.
However, this isn't always the case. Some loyalty programs — such as Delta — charge fewer miles for booking a round-trip award instead of two one-way flights. We recommend pricing out award flights both ways just to be sure.
airline loyalty programs

Just a great trio that really are friendly and treat you like family. Even as a college student who doesn't spend the whole year here in Geneseo I felt welcome and Frankie always tries to fit in whatever laptop issue I have into his very busy schedule. If you have any issues be sure to stop by them first before going anywhere else. They are pretty quick getting whatever you need done and are very transparent through the whole process. I purchased a new(er) laptop from them and they did a checkup on it when I had a slight speaker problem for free. Great people, extremely smart, caring, and will treat you like family.
I was in Geneseo visiting my dad after having been on a business trip AND after being scammed and being locked out of my IPhone. The last day of my visit, I decided to go over to One Stop Tech Shop to see if any one there might be able to help me but was not aware that they preferred to have appointments. I was a walk in and Frankie came right over to help me. I explained what had happened and he asked me to kind of hang around while he helped people with appointments. He worked me in, in between other people, and did everything he could to try to help fix my phone. In the end, he was unable to help me but he did help me set up my new Apple ID (boy did that hurt) and got me back logged into to my phone. I would suggest, if you are in the Geneseo area, that you go see Frankie and friends! They were great and very knowledgeable! Even though I had start over with everything on my phone, I was quite entertained while waiting and I met some nice people!!

Hello everyone

Yes - I stayed at the Hampton Inn on Bay Street which is in the middle of everything and has secure parking.
Amazing thanks
I've heard that Savannah is nice and there's a great area for going for a walk. Although, the walkways are cobblestone and absolutely awful in terms of evenness. A friend tripped on a stone in the dark and almost ended up in the ER.
Me, I generally stick with hotels right next to I-95. I use places from the major flags ( Hilton , Marriott, Hyatt, and maybe Holiday Inn), at least Hampton/Fairfield class. I've only had a problem once in 30 years.

How to use ChatGPT’s new memory feature, temporary chats, and chat history
- Share on Facebook
Discover how companies are responsibly integrating AI in production. This invite-only event in SF will explore the intersection of technology and business. Find out how you can attend here .
No, it’s not GPT-5. And nor is it the mysterious GPT-2 chatbot that seemingly appeared out of nowhere yesterday.
Nonetheless, OpenAI has continued to update its signature product, ChatGPT, the large language model (LLM) chatbot that nearly singlehandedly kicked off the generative AI era after its launch in November 2022, with a rolling list of new features this week alone.
Following on the heels of its developer and enterprise-focused API updates last week, OpenAI has also expanded ChatGPT’s persistent memory feature to all paying subscribers of ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) outside of Europe and South Korea.
How to use ChatGPT’s memory feature to store your information and recall it when needed
This feature, initially announced back in February of this year , drastically increases the utility of ChatGPT for some regular users, allowing them to type in details about themselves, their business, or their usage of the product — any information they’d like ChatGPT to have access to on an ongoing basis — and the chatbot will remember what it’s been given.
The AI Impact Tour – San Francisco
Join us as we navigate the complexities of responsibly integrating AI in business at the next stop of VB’s AI Impact Tour in San Francisco. Don’t miss out on the chance to gain insights from industry experts, network with like-minded innovators, and explore the future of GenAI with customer experiences and optimize business processes.
You don’t need to say anything specific to ChatGPT to get it to remember, but if you want to be sure, you can type a prompt such as “Remember this going forward:” followed by the information you want it to store.
You know it works by a message that appears below the ChatGPT username and before its response that reads: “Memory updated.” So far, it supports only text you provide, not images (we tried.)
A GIF posted by the official OpenAI account on X shows how it works.
Memory is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users. Using Memory is easy: just start a new chat and tell ChatGPT anything you’d like it to remember. Memory can be turned on or off in settings and is not currently available in Europe or Korea. Team, Enterprise, and GPTs to come. pic.twitter.com/mlt9vyYeMK — OpenAI (@OpenAI) April 29, 2024
Here’s an example from my personal ChatGPT Plus account:
If you decide you don’t want ChatGPT to remember something you just typed, you can hover your cursor over the “Memory Updated” message on desktop below the ChatGPT username and it should open up a dropdown menu with an option labeled “Manage memories.”
Clicking on “Manage memories” in desktop should bring up a box labeled “Memory” along with discrete memories in text format pasted below. Clicking the “trash” icon to the right of each memory will allow you to delete them one by one. Clicking “Clear ChatGPT’s memory” in red at the bottom will delete all the stored information to date.
The memory feature can also be turned on and off entirely in ChatGPT’s settings (available on desktop) by clicking your account username/avatar image in the lower-left corner and then clicking “Settings” and “Personalization.”
However, turning it off will not delete ChatGPT’s previously stored memories of what you previously told it to remember. It will simply turn off the ability for it to store future information that you give it.
If you want to actually delete all the memories it stores, you’ll need to go back to the “Manage memories” option in the drop down or in Settings (under Personalization).
Important limitations with ChatGPT memory
As stated above, the ChatGPT memory feature only works with text-based information at present. It does not store imagery nor audio.
You also, unfortunately, cannot use memory to have ChatGPT remind you of upcoming dates or deadlines unprompted.
One work around: It will allow you to store information about upcoming dates and deadlines and then ask it, “what are my upcoming deadlines?” or similar, and it should provide the information you requested (if you previously asked it to remember that).
How to use ChatGPT’s temporary chat feature
On the flip side, if you’re working with ChatGPT on a temporary project or something that you don’t want it store a record of, you can start a “temporary chat.”
This feature can be found by clicking the dropdown menu near the top left of the screen on desktop where you select the underlying LLM powering your experience. Previously, you could choose between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Now, you can also choose “Temporary chat” among the available options.
Once you launch it, the temporary chat screen notes that “for safety purposes, [OpenAI] may keep a copy [of your temporary chat] for up to 30 days.”
Importantly, the temporary chat doesn’t appear to have access to the prior ChatGPT memories you stored, so if you are relying on those to do work in a temporary chat, you’ll have to provide that information again to the chatbot.
Closing the browser tab or window with the temporary chat will terminate it, and when you re-open ChatGPT, it should default back to GPT-4 for paying subscribers.
How to use ChatGPT history
Regular users of ChatGPT have likely already seen their prior chats piling up along the left rail of the application under the “Today” or date heading column (“Previous 7 days,” “Previous 30 days,” etc).
Clicking each of these will re-open that chat instance. Now OpenAI is allowing for even more control and access to these prior chats.
The company today noted on its X account that it updated ChatGPT for Free users and Plus subscribers so all of them can still retain their chat history in this format on the left side, or in their archive, even if they have elected to opt-out of OpenAI using their data to train its models.
Why would you want this? If you work at a company or in an industry with high information security or privacy requirements, or simply don’t want OpenAI using your data for any reason — yet still want the power of ChatGPT to help you with your work or personal projects, and to be able to access your prior chats with the chatbot — you can now do both of these.
Previously, if you wanted a chat history, you needed to allow OpenAI to train on your session data (this was due to the way the company had ChatGPT set up).
Opt-out for model training can be accessed under “Username” then “Settings” followed by “Data Controls” and “Improve the model for everyone,” where the user can toggle between green for “on” (sharing chat session data with OpenAI for model training) or gray/white for “off” (not sharing it).
The following animated GIF by OpenAI shows how to toggle the opt-in for OpenAI using your chat and user data for model training on or off.
We're updating our data controls for ChatGPT Free and Plus users. Now, you can access your chat history regardless of whether you’re opted into training for model improvement. If you’ve previously opted out, your choice will remain. Available on web today, and mobile soon. pic.twitter.com/KHqF2aTCYB — OpenAI (@OpenAI) April 30, 2024
As always, if you do decide to delete your ChatGPT history, you’ll want to navigate over to “Username” then “Settings” and “General,” and click the bright red button at the bottom labeled “Delete all” beside “Delete all chats.”
While they may take a little bit of getting used to, the new options and features seem to offer ChatGPT users and subscribers even greater control and a more useful experience — a good strategy by OpenAI as competition increases across the board from other open source and proprietary LLM providers, model makers, and specialized AI buildwhat ers.

N.Y. DA cursed at officer and refused to comply during traffic stop, police bodycam video shows
An upstate New York district attorney is under investigation after police bodycam video showed her getting into a heated confrontation with an officer who had stopped her for speeding, calling him an “a--hole" and demanding “leave me alone.”
Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley apologized on Monday, a day after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul referred the April 22 incident to the State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct.
"What I did was wrong — no excuses," Doorley said in her apology. "I take full responsibility for my actions.”
The bodycam video, obtained by NBC affiliate WHEC of Rochester , showed that the exchange started when a Webster police officer pulled up to Doorley's garage, where she had just parked.
The officer, identified as Cameron Crisafulli by the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper, asked Doorley why she didn't pull over when he had his lights and sirens on.
She admitted she was going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. Later in the 26-minute video, she said she didn't think he was trying to pull her over, claiming there were other people on the road. “I was right behind you,” the officer replied.
Throughout the video, Doorley did not cooperate with demands to stay in front of the garage. Instead she walked around her garage, at one point trying to go inside her home.
“Ma’am, do not go inside,” Crisafulli said. “Ma’am, come outside. You can’t just go inside, this is a traffic stop.”
“I understand the law better than you. Get out of my f------ house,” she retorted.
Doorley appeared agitated and boasted multiple times, “I am the DA of Monroe County,” and repeatedly said “leave me alone.” When told she had violated speeding laws, she said, “I don’t really care.”
Doorley said she was calling Webster Police Chief Dennis Kohlmeier and she put Crisafulli on the line. Crisafulli then called a supervisor to the scene.
“I just don’t understand the hostility towards me. I'm just doing my job,” Crisafulli said. She quipped back: “You're being an a--hole. I am the DA of Monroe County.”
“If you give me traffic ticket that’s fine. I'm the one that prosecutes it. Go ahead,” she said at one point.
“I'm having a really bad day," she said. "I've been dealing with murders all over the city.”
A supervisor ultimately came to the home and spoke with Doorley, and Crisafulli ended up writing her a ticket for speeding.
When he presented it to her, she simply nodded and said, “I apologize.”
“I'm sorry you had a bad day, and I'm sorry it went this way. I do respect what you do. Have a good day,” the officer replied.
An apology and investigation
Hochul, in her statement Sunday, said Doorley's behavior was "in contravention of her responsibility as a District Attorney and undermined her ability to hold others accountable for violating the law."
Doorley issued an apology video Monday, WHEC reported, saying: “Last Monday I failed you and the standards that I hold myself to. And for that I am so sorry."
She added, "I fell short of the values I’ve held for my entire 33-year career. I didn’t treat this officer with the respect that he deserved. All police officers deserve respect."
She said that she had come home from work that day and dealt with three homicides that had occurred the weekend before.
" I was still reeling from a frightening medical concern that my husband received that afternoon," she explained. "But we all have bad days and stress, and it was wrong on me to take it out on an officer who was simply doing his job. While I had previously apologized to him, I will say it again, I’m sorry."
She said she pleaded guilty to the speeding ticket and will pay the fine, and is referring the matter to a different district attorney's office for review. She said she'd also self-report the case to the grievance committee.
"If one of my assistant district attorneys had acted this way, I would have disciplined them, so I’m disciplining myself. I will take ethics training to remind myself that professionalism matters," she said. "I’ve been humbled by my own stupidity and I am fully to blame. I will make this right — I ask for your forgiveness."

Biden, after meeting with families of officers killed in NC, says the nation is grieving with them
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — President Joe Biden said Thursday he was praying for loved ones and all those left behind after he met privately with the families of law enforcement officers shot to death on the job. The visit came just a week after he sat down with the grieving relatives of two cops killed in upstate New York.
“The entire nation is grieving with these families,” he said from his second stop of the day in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he was announcing new measures to cut lead pipes from the water supply.
Biden detoured to Charlotte for the visit that took place with little fanfare behind closed doors, as the White House wanted Biden to be seen as respecting the privacy of grieving families and avoiding the appearance of using their grief for political purposes. He also met with officers wounded during the shooting, and wished them a fast recovery.
The president took a short motorcade across the airport to the North Carolina Air National Guard base to meet the group, which included elected officials . The location was an alternative to traveling into the city and was chosen as the least taxing one for local law enforcement officers who are still reeling from the deaths but who would have a hand in securing the president’s trip.
“The men and women of law enforcement, you represent the best of us,” he said from the podium at the second stop.
Once again, Biden was seeking to be an empathetic leader for a community reeling from gun violence, while also calling for stricter rules around firearms and more money for law enforcement on the front lines.
Four officers were killed this week in North Carolina, when a wanted man opened fire on a joint agency task force that had come to arrest him on a warrant for possession of a firearm as an ex-felon, and fleeing to elude capture. They were: Sam Poloche and William Elliott of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Joshua Eyer; and Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks.
Four other officers were wounded in the gunfire; the suspect was killed. An AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a 40-caliber handgun and ammunition were found at the scene.
An AR-15 is among the weapons most often used in mass shootings, and it’s the type of gun Biden is talking about when he says the U.S. should ban " assault weapons .” Congress passed the most comprehensive gun control legislation in decades in 2022, after a horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. But it didn’t go far enough, Biden often says.
And as he campaigns for the 2024 election, Biden has made curbing gun violence a major campaign platform, elusive to Democrats even during the Obama era , as he fends off attacks from Republican challenger Donald Trump that he is soft on crime and anti-police.
“We have to get them the resources they need to do their job,” Biden said of law enforcement. “And keep the weapons of war” out of the wrong hands.
The violence came just about two weeks after another fatal shooting of law enforcement officers in Syracuse, New York; Lieutenant Michael Hoosock and Officer Michael Jensen were killed while looking for a driver who fled a traffic stop. After his speech, Biden met relatives of both of the officers’ families.
Biden had already been scheduled to come to Syracuse to celebrate Micron Technology’s plans to build a campus of computer chip factories , but the local police union said officers were still coming to terms with the deaths and weren’t happy with the president’s trip and had hoped he would delay.
On Thursday from Wilmington, Biden announced his administration was providing states with an additional $3 billion to replace lead pipes across the country, building on $5.8 billion for water infrastructure projects around the country announced in February.
“There’s no safe level of lead exposure,” he said. “None. The only way forward is to replace every lead service line that connects clean water.”
Money for the pipe replacement comes from one of the administration’s key legislative victories, the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law that Biden signed in 2021. The infrastructure law includes over $50 billion to upgrade America’s water infrastructure.
The new round of funding will help pay for projects nationwide as Biden seeks to replace all lead pipes in the country.
“We’re going to get it done,” he said.
EPA estimates that North Carolina has 370,000 lead pipes, and $76 million will go to replace them statewide. Biden also will meet with faculty and students at a Wilmington school that replaced a water fountain with high levels of lead with money from the law.

3 bodies in Mexican well identified as Australian and American surfers killed for truck’s tires
Relatives have identified three bodies found in a well as those of two Australian surfers and one American who went missing last weekend, Mexican authorities said Sunday. Baja California state prosecutors said the relatives had viewed the bodies recovered from a remote well about 50 feet (15 meters) deep and recognized them as their loved ones.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Relatives have identified three bodies found in a well as those of two Australian surfers and one American who went missing last weekend, Mexican authorities said Sunday.
Baja California state prosecutors said the relatives had viewed the corpses recovered from a remote well about 50 feet (15 meters) deep and recognized them as their loved ones.
Thieves apparently killed the three, who were on a surfing trip to Mexico’s Baja peninsula, to steal their truck because they wanted the tires. They then allegedly got rid of the bodies by dumping them in a well near the coast.
The well was located some 4 miles (6 kilometers) from where the foreigners were killed, and also contained a fourth cadaver that had been there much longer.
Three suspects are being held in connection with the case, which locals said was solved far more quickly than the disappearances of thousands of Mexicans.
The three men were on a camping and surfing trip along a stretch of coast south of the city of Ensenada, posting idyllic photos on social media of waves and isolated beaches, before they went missing last weekend.
Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez described what likely would have been moments of terror that ended the trip for brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad.
She theorized the killers drove by and saw the foreigners’ pickup truck and tents and wanted to steal their tires. But “when (the foreigners) came up and caught them, surely, they resisted.”
She said that’s when the killers would have shot the tourists.
The thieves then allegedly went to what she called “a site that is extremely hard to get to” and allegedly dumped the bodies into a well they apparently were familiar with. She said investigators were not ruling out the possibility the same suspects also dumped the first, earlier body in the well as part of previous crimes.
“They may have been looking for trucks in this area,” Andrade Ramírez said.
The thieves allegedly covered the well with boards. “It was literally almost impossible to find it,” Andrade Ramírez said, and it took two hours to winch the bodies out of the well.
Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers expressed sympathy for the Robinson family. “I think the whole country’s heart goes out to all of their loved ones. It has been an absolutely horrendous, absolutely horrific ordeal and our thoughts are with all of them today,” he said at a news conference Monday in the capital, Canberra.
The site where the bodies were discovered near the township of Santo Tomás was near the remote seaside area where the missing men’s tents and truck were found Thursday along the coast. From their last photo posts, the trip looked perfect. But even experienced local expatriates are questioning whether it is safe to camp along the largely deserted coast anymore.
The moderator of the local Talk Baja internet forum, who has lived in the area for almost two decades, wrote in an editorial Saturday that “the reality is, the dangers of traveling to and camping in remote areas are outweighing the benefits anymore.”
But in a way, adventure was key to the victims’ lifestyle.
Callum Robinson’s Instagram account contained the following slogan: “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room.”
At the news conference, Andrade Ramírez was questioned by one reporter who expressed approval that such a massive and rapid search was mounted for the foreigners, but asked why, when local people disappear in the area, little is often done for weeks, months, or years.
“Do you have to be a foreigner in Baja California in order for there to be an investigation if something happens to you?′ asked the reporter, who did not identify herself by name. ”Every investigation is different,” Andrade Ramírez replied.
As if to underscore that point, dozens of mourners, surfers and demonstrators gathered in a main plaza in Ensenada, the nearest city, to voice their anger and sadness at the deaths.
“Ensenada is a mass grave,” read one placard carried by protesters. “Australia, we are with you,” one man scrawled on one of the half-dozen surf boards at the demonstration.
A woman held up a sign that read “They only wanted to surf — we demand safe beaches.”
Gabriela Acosta, a surfer, attended the protest “to show love, solidarity and respect for the three lives that were lost.” Acosta said that surfers in Baja are aware of the dangers.
“We are women and we would sometimes like to surf alone,” Acosta said. “But we never do that, because of the situation. We always have to go accompanied.”
“I think that what happened to them is just an example of the lack of safety in this state,” she said.
Surfers later performed a “paddle-out” ceremony where they formed a circle on their boards in the ocean.
Baja California prosecutors had said they were questioning three people in the killings, two of them because they were caught with methamphetamines. Prosecutors said the two were being held pending drug charges but continue to be suspects in the killings.
A third man was arrested on charges of a crime equivalent to kidnapping, but that was before the bodies were found. It was unclear if he might face more charges.
The third suspect was believed to have directly participated in the killings. In keeping with Mexican law, prosecutors identified him by his first name, Jesús Gerardo, alias “el Kekas,” a slang word that means “quesadillas,” or cheese tortillas. Andrade Ramírez said he had a criminal record, and that more people may have been involved.
Last week, the mother of the missing Australians, Debra Robinson, posted on a local community Facebook page, appealing for help in finding her sons. Robinson said Callum and Jake had not been heard from since April 27. They had booked accommodation in the city of Rosarito, not far from Ensenada.
Robinson said Callum was diabetic. She also mentioned that the American who was with them was named Jack Carter Rhoad, but the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City did not immediately confirm that. The U.S. State Department said it was aware of reports of a U.S. citizen missing in Baja, but gave no further details.
In 2015, two Australian surfers , Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, were killed in western Sinaloa state, across the Gulf of California — also known as the Sea of Cortez — from the Baja peninsula. Authorities said they were victims of highway bandits. Three suspects were arrested in that case.

It’s Trump Eve in Michigan: Here’s what to know before his Freeland rally
- Updated: May. 01, 2024, 10:11 p.m. |

TITTABAWASSEE TOWNSHIP, MI — As Donald Trump’s rally here at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, fast approaches, thousands of attendees are expected to watch the former president pitch his case for a second term in the White House.
While Trump’s campaign has not provided advance material indicating what topics he plans to address, plenty of details about the rally are set in stone. Other details, meanwhile, are coming into focus as the president navigates a busy schedule that includes a criminal trial in Manhattan and an earlier campaign stop in a neighboring Midwest state.
Here are 5 things to know before the rally begins at MBS International Airport:
Cooperative weather
After scattered storms kept the region damp in the days leading up to the rally, Wednesday’s weather forecast appears favorable for attendees who likely will spend plenty of time outdoors.
As of the publication of this report, National Weather Service forecasts showed temperatures in Tittabawassee Township — also known as Freeland — could reach 74 degrees, with the weather changing from partly sunny to mostly sunny and breezy.
Wind gusts could reach 32 miles per hour, the forecast indicated.
Traffic jams
During the 2020 election cycle, Trump led a campaign rally at the same MBS International Airport-based aviation station, known as Avflight.
Back then, about 10,000 people attended. Airport officials are planning for a similar-sized crowd on Wednesday.
Anticipating the high volume of traffic, MBS International Airport officials on its Facebook page shared traffic-related advice, both for rally attendees and motorists with plans to travel near the property.
“US-10 to Garfield Road is recommended as the preferred driving route, but it’s wise to anticipate heavy traffic in the area,” read an MBS International Airport Facebook post earlier this week. “Departing passengers should aim to arrive at MBS several hours before their scheduled departure to allow for any unexpected delays.”
The airport’s social media channel also shared a Google Earth-generated map showing rally attendees where to park .

A notable Tuesday
While Wednesday represents an off-day in the court proceedings, Trump in recent weeks has attended his ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan. He is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of a scheme to bury stories that he feared could hurt his 2016 campaign.
Trump was in court for the Tuesday, April 30, session, when he was held in contempt of court and fined $9,000 for repeatedly violating a gag order that barred him from making public statements about witnesses, jurors and some others connected to his New York hush money case.
If Trump violates the gag order again, New York Judge Juan M. Merchan warned the former president could be jailed.
Might Trump use the rally to chime in on the latest developments in his trial? It’s possible. He has remained outspoken about the case on his social media channel, Truth Social.
“The Judge has taken away my Constitutional Right to FREE SPEECH,” read a Tuesday post on Trump’s account that also described the trial as “rigged.”
What else happened Tuesday for the ex-president? Trump learned he was on the cover of Time magazine, in a profile based on an extensive interview with the former president about his plans if he wins a second term in the White House .
A busy Wednesday
Michigan isn’t the former president’s only stop on the campaign trail Wednesday. He will arrive there after first hosting a 2 p.m. rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin, his campaign announced last week.
The Wednesday double-header represents Trump’s first campaign rallies since his criminal case kicked off in April.
The last time he engaged in a rally doubleheader: Four weeks earlier, also in Michigan and Wisconsin.

What he’s been saying at rallies lately
An April 2 rally in Green Bay featured Trump attacking his Democratic opponent, President Joe Biden, over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border .
Later that day, he traveled to Grand Rapids, carrying a similar message to gatherers there . He painted a grim picture of what he called an “invasion” of migrants coming into the country illegally and committing crimes.
The former president’s visit to Grand Rapids came a little more than a week after Grand Rapids resident Ruby Garcia was slain allegedly by a Mexican citizen living in the U.S. illegally.
“Under crooked Joe Biden, every state is now a border state; every town is now a border town,” Trump said at the Grand Rapids gathering, “because Joe Biden has brought the carnage and chaos and killing from all over the world and dumped it straight into our backyards. It’s going to end the day I take office.”
Trump’s rhetoric relating to Garcia’s death led some Democratic leaders to push back on the former president , calling him out for “exploiting” her death and scuttling a bipartisan border security deal earlier this year.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
