A Moroccan Adventure: Experiencing Magical Marrakech

A Moroccan Adventure: Experiencing Magical Marrakech

Africa experts Louise and Fiona have recently returned from Morocco, where they sought out the best places to go, things to see and hotels to stay in. In the first in a series of blogs, Louise shares her magical Marrakech experience.

It was surreal to think...

As we sat on our sunny roof terrace, that the lamb tagine bubbling away in front of us had taken twice as long to cook than our 2.5 hour flight from London that morning. That's right folks, just 2.5 hours away the most wondrously exotic escape from Old Blighty awaits you. Not to mention sun, glorious sun! From the delights of the bustling souq to the peaceful pamperings of the riads, Marrakech will leave every one of your senses buzzing.

The heavenly smells of the luxurious Villa des Orangers, for example, had Fiona and I sniffing the air like a pair of blood hounds, somewhat unnerving our host as he walked us through fragrant courtyards lined with orange trees, jasmine and lavender. By the time we got to the aromatic spa we were as dizzy as bees in spring.

The striking Riad El Fenn...

Is certainly a feast for the eyes - rich in colour and style, El Fenn is a traditional riad done in a bold, funky and unique style - with modern art showcased throughout. Red is easily the dominant colour, and as the owner is Vanessa Branson, sister of Richard, perhaps that isn't all that surprising. A penchant for red seems to run in the family. The courtyards are charming (watch your step, they're home to a couple of baby tortoises) but it is the spectacular views of the city from the stylish rooftop that stay with you. With a terrific bar and restaurant, one of the few rooftop pools in the city and masses of comfortable chill out areas, your biggest dilemma here is simply how to tear yourself away from the fabulous roof terrace.

To set your tastebuds tingling...

Visit the lovely Riad Kniza, whose gracious hosts produced a seemingly endless stream of delicious local dishes, each bigger than the last, which left us clutching the table in wonder at how we were going to consume all this hospitality; we made it through, but belts were loosened (or if we're being honest, removed entirely and tucked into my handbag). Never let it be said that I do not take my research trips seriously).

One of the most charming things about Riad Kniza is its strong sense of authenticity and, having been in the owner's family for 200 years, it is no wonder. Even its location feels particularly authentic. Stepping (rolling) out after lunch we joined the flow of everyday Moroccan life which spills out into the nearby alleyways.

Instead of the usual tourist handbags, carpets and spices...

There were enormous sacks of fresh mint, flaming bread ovens, almonds, brass pots, cobblers... all set amongst a mind-boggling menagerie of things you could never dream of finding in a European market. A crate of multi coloured chicks anyone....?! Just don't get too lost in wonder at it all; the donkey cart drivers and mopeds which jostle for right of way don't put up with dawdlers.

On the other hand...

The famous souq pretty much demands a slow paced wander. Put away the map and lose yourself (which is what would happen anyway, so best to roll with it) in this intoxicating labyrinth of narrow alleyways lined with handmade leather, metal and woollen goods. Expect some, shall we say, very sprightly salesmen while other stalls will just prop up a snoring minder. Most will have a cat lounging around somewhere.

Now, if you suffer from crippling indecision, as I do, then I suggest you take your most decisive shopping partner along, because the choice in these markets is mind-bending. I'd set my heart on finding a bag, but after seeing fifty shades of leather I was so overwhelmed I gave up and returned with a measly selection of spices and a shot of Argan oil for my locks.

In fact, I would suggest dropping the pressure of shopping altogether and simply soaking up the atmosphere. It is mesmerising to watch the craftsman at work in the back of their stalls. Ironmongers with sparks flying above their heads as they weld a lump into something delicate and beautiful... and even more satisfying to be able to buy the lamp you have watched come to life from the very same hands that created it. That's how you decide what to buy, watch it come to life!

No trip to Marrakech would be complete...

Without a wander down to the Djemaa el-Fna Square at dusk when this medieval market comes to life. Amazing food stalls dotted between all sorts of weird and wonderful street theatre together create an incredible atmosphere. Musicians, storytellers, snake charmers, henna painters, falcons, monkeys, tooth pullers... you name it. It's a great evening for anyone but a real winner for kids- this is real eyes-on-stalks stuff.

But here's the thing- it wasn't nearly as touristy as I thought it was going to be. Sure, there were a fair few tourists wandering about rather cautiously, but most peered down from the numerous café balconies which line the square. The majority were in fact locals, mainly families, enjoying some good old fashioned street food and entertainment, and it's this that gives the square that special atmosphere.

For those not quite sure that the hustle and bustle is quite their bag...

Fear not. Just 15 minutes away from the medina lies all the peace and tranquillity you could ask for, not to mention the space you will rarely find in the medina. The Palmerie district (name after, you guessed it, the hundreds of palms which peer down on you) is an excellent choice for groups and families looking to spread out more than the medina allows, but not wanting to miss out on the Marrakech experience. The charming and colourful Dar Zemora, with its ridiculously lush garden, and the stylish and beautifully landscaped Jnane Tamsna both offer a much calmer and very different experience to the medina riads.

Wherever you go, I guarantee Morocco will leave its distinctive mark on all your senses, and if you're not careful, your belt!

Hidden blooms: the Secret Garden, Marrakech.

Marvellous Marrakech: finding your way around the maze of Morocco’s gem

Famous for its vibrant colour and intoxicating culture, this ancient city has something for all the senses. Here are 15 tips for a perfect break

1. For a hidden oasis… The secret garden

A remarkable newly restored garden, Le Jardin Secret was the site of one of the largest riads in the medina, belonging to the chancellor of Sultan Moulay Abd al-Hafid, the last sultan of Morocco before the French protectorate. By 1934 it had fallen into disrepair. It reopened in 2016 with gardens designed by the British gardening architect Tom Stuart-Smith. Split into an exotic garden and an Islamic garden (laid out according to strict geometrical rules), it’s a place of sublime beauty and peace. Enjoy the view from the elegant rooftop terrace, along with a mint tea and one of their tasty homemade cakes ( lejardinsecretmarrakech.com ) .

2. For cocktail lounging… Café Arabe

Universally loved… the rooftop terrace at the Café Arabe.

There is no better place to linger for a medina aperitif than on the sprawling terrace of Café Arabe, Marrakech’s universally loved rooftop bar. It has everything: chilled rosé, an ambient soundtrack, comfy sofas and plenty of shade. In the heat of the day, simply position yourself under the fine mist of their sprinklers with a frozen margarita in hand and enjoy the view of the medina baking below you ( cafearabe.com ) .

3. For stunning tiles… Dar El Bacha

A fine example of riad architecture: the Dar El Bacha palace, these days it’s a museum.

The Dar El Bacha palace, built in 1910 at the entrance of the medina, is one of the city’s finest examples of riad architecture. After the Second World War the palace doors were closed and for 60 years it was shuttered. In 2017, it came back to life as the Museum of Cultural Confluences, where visitors can explore Morocco’s rich cultural heritage. Once the residence of the Marrakech pasha, Thami El Glaoui, it’s awash with zellige (colourful geometric tilework) and the central courtyard is filled with fountains and orange trees. Dar El Bacha, Rte Sidi Abdelaziz, open daily, except Monday ( darbacha.com).

4. For old-school lodgings… La Sultana

Ornate courtyards… La Sultana.

Perfectly located near the Royal Palace and overlooking the 16th-century Saadian Tombs, La Sultana is a 28-room sprawling collection of five different riads. This maze-like oasis has treasures at every turn: artworks, antiques, palm trees and exotic plants fill each of the ornate courtyards. There’s an opulent pink-marbled spa with a plunge pool and hammam, while the bedrooms are equally fabulous; some have an internal balcony with idyllic views of the turquoise pool below, framed with palms and pretty white sunbeds. It’s another world, but one you don’t have to stay overnight to savour. Drop in for a day pass to the spa, or drinks and meze on their rooftop terrace with wraparound views of the royal quarter and the kasbah. Double rooms from £307; cocktails at Odette Rooftop Bar & Mezzé , £14

(l asultanahotels.com ).

5. For a taste of Morocco’s past… Maison de la Photographie

Maison de la Photographie

Spread over three floors of a 17th-century Saadian townhouse, museum Maison de la Photographie holds an archive of thousands of original photographs taken in Morocco between 1879 and 1960 ( maisondelaphotographie.ma ) .

6. For museum chic… Musée Yves St Laurent

Fashionable: Le Jardin Majorelle, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent.

Yves Saint Laurent visited Marrakech in 1966 and the Red City was undoubtedly a primary influence on his designs for the next 40 years. The Musée Yves St Laurent has a permanent display of couture collections on show, including his iconic Le Smoking tuxedo, the Mondrian dress and safari jacket. Alongside is work of up-and-coming Moroccan artists and designers. However, it’s the building that’s the real star here. Designed by Studio KO, it’s a gorgeous low-level curvaceous monument to St Laurent in varying hues of rose pink – one that would have undoubtedly inspired the designer himself ( museeyslmarrakech.com ) .

7. For stunning interiors… El Fenn hotel

Large Orange Room with terrace

The magic starts as you step from the dusty street through a giant wooden door into El Fenn, a stunning hotel in the heart of Marrakech. Cats snooze on velvet chairs near the reception, and in winter a fire blazes. Each room is individually designed, some have stained glass, others have rolltop baths beside the fireplace. Breakfast on the roof terrace is not to be rushed: feast on Moroccan crumpets with honey, creamy eggs, shakshuka and pastries as you gaze over the city to the Koutoubia mosque. By day, laze next to one of the pools on a day bed or striped lounger. The rooftop bar and restaurant is a chilled place to hang out (and is open to non-residents). In the tiled downstairs patio, you can get mint tea and cake. Around every corner is an artwork to gaze at, and a luxurious nook or hammock to curl up in. After all that exertion, you may like to relax at night, sipping cocktails by candlelight to a cool music beat. The hotel also has a destination boutique offering high-end wares from some of Morocco’s finest makers and artists. A double room at El Fenn, including breakfast and afternoon tea, costs from £300 per night ( el-fenn.com).

8. For the best coffee in town… Bacha

Interior design of stylish Bacha Coffee.

Housed in a courtyard in the Dar El Bacha palace (see above), café Bacha Coffee oozes prewar glamour. Waiters in white jackets and fezzes glide around the monochrome chequered floor distributing dozens of varieties of 100% Arabica coffee. Don’t leave without buying one of the trademark tins of coffee as a souvenir ( bachacoffee.com ) .

9. For glamour… three great boutiques

Topolina, at 134 Dar el Bacha ( @topolinashop ) is a great place for embroidered slippers, funky bags, kaftans and hats in beautiful colours. For statement dresses and coats, check out Hanout Boutique ( ha noutboutique.com ) from Moroccan designer Meriem Nour. For chic interiors, head to Chabi Chic, a young Moroccan brand of tableware, home decor and other household items established in Marrakech by Vanessa Di Mino and Nadia Noël ( chabi-chic.com ).

10. For a glorious sunset… Dar Dar

Dar Dar bar

The rooftop bar at Dar Dar restaurant has one of the loveliest sunset views across the city. Serving classic Moroccan food and great cocktails, it also features a nightly DJ offering relaxed gnawa grooves ( rooftopdardar.com ) .

11. For fusion food… Le Trou au Mur

Dazzling… Le Trou au Mer.

Set in a small riad in the oldest part of the medina, restaurant Le Trou au Mur is a little off the beaten track. Concealed behind an ancient-looking door in the wall that you could easily walk past, it’s all the more dazzling when you do find it. This bijou gem with jazzy floor tiles and a striking monochrome interior has the feel of a best-kept secret. Created by James Wix, owner of Le Farnatchi boutique hotel opposite, its delicious eclectic menu mixes Moroccan and European styles, such as pumpkin ravioli in a cream sauce, couscous and tempura vegetables with a fiery chilli sauce. Standout desserts include hibiscus ice-cream and chocolate fondant. The lime daiquiris are highly recommended. Three-course meal from £35 per head ( letrouaumur.com).

12. For authentic crafts… two workshops worth a visit

Carpets at Soufiane Zarib.

Mustapha Ben Aziz weaves elegant scarves on his loom in an array of ice-cream colours –lilacs, pinks, blues and naturals – using wools, silks and cottons ( 6 Souk Ah l Fes ). For carpets, there’s no better place than Soufiane Zarib on rue Riad Laarous. A third-generation family firm, they pride themselves in offering luxurious, authentic rugs from the Atlas region ( soufiane-zarib.com ) .

13. For a cultural lowdown… Café Clock

Gnaoua sunset concerts at Cafe Clock

Founded in Fez by Mike Richardson, a former maître d’hôtel at the Ivy, Café Clock is a cultural hub that quickly became a winning formula, and one which he’s expanded here, in an old school in the kasbah, with equal success. Come for a breakfast of Berber eggs, avocado toast and pancake stacks, but stay for so much more. Richardson wants to introduce visitors to Moroccan life through music and art with activities from yoga to storytelling, calligraphy to playing the Oud. Or hook up with a local Marrakshi who will teach you everything you need to know about the local culture ( cafeclock.com ) .

14. For a home from home… Riad Spice

Riad Spice.

Riad Spice is a bijoux 10-room 16th-century riad lovingly restored by English couple Mike and Lucie Wood. Twenty years ago they visited the city and never really left. Now they are rooted in the community, especially through their involvement in traditional Moroccan storytelling – Lucie also runs her World Storytelling vegan café nearby, an atmospheric venue where you can enjoy this traditional oral heritage. Riad Spice is similarly sympathetic to Moroccan tradition. Ancient carved doors and arches open up into bright white interiors with intricate wood detailing. The focal point in the central courtyard is a pretty turquoise dipping pool framed with teal velvet furniture. Upstairs is a rambling roof terrace. Double rooms from £128 per night including a delicious breakfast of flatbreads and goat’s cheese, pancakes and strawberries ( riadspice.com ; worldstorytellingcafe.com ).

15. For a hassle-free trip… hire a guide

Booking a guide is the calmest way to get familiar with the old city. Try Said Nejdi ( [email protected] ) for a fascinating morning tour. Charming and knowledgable, he’ll take you to places you’d never find on our own, from hidden palaces to the bustling metalwork area. Most hotels can recommend a trusted guide.

Perfect vacation planning in Morocco

This was our first time working with KimKim and Original Travels and we could not have been more pleased. They took all the stress out of planning the trip. We told them the cities we wanted to visit and our budget for appropriate riads to stay and they put together the perfect itinerary of comfortable and well located riads along with customized day tours of the cities. We also can’t stress enough how wonderful it was to have a private driver throughout our trip. Reda was not only enjoyable to be with but was so accommodating to our whims of stopping for supplies and amenities. More than an a driver, he was a friend. And the home base staff of Ali and Said were available instantly when we had questions during the trip or wants to change things at the last minute. There was never a feeling of guilt. They made us feel like we were their only travelers. So polite and professional. We look forward to using this team again for future travels. If you want to truly relax and enjoy an adventure of a trip that spans multiple cities, you will not beat the prices and service of this team.

Easy to customize a 10 day tour

Booked a 10 day trip, Abdel was easy to communicate with to customize what we wanted to see in Morocco and gave us a few options. It was also great to know the drivers and local guide in each city spoke English. Transportation, hotels/riads, and mini excursions were all planned out by the company for us.

Unforgettable Morocco

We miss Morocco and our amazing guide Abdel and Karim, our always smiling driver! Abdel arranged a magical trip for us, a true experience and not simply a prescribed list of sights. The highlight of our trip was our 2-nights camping in the Sahara at Tiziri Camp. The camp is run by Akmed with his team of friendly helpers/amazing musicians. After delicious dinners we would sit around the fire listening to live music played by Akmed and his crew. Fantastic! We had many memorable discussions under the starry sky and I happily celebrated an unforgettable birthday there. We also visited a nomad home and rode camels at sunset, heard the music of Mali... thank you Akmed! We have visited Morocco before but this trip taught us a great deal more and deepened the experience immeasurably.

If you want a unique experience in Morocco, then Original Travels is the the perfect travel agency for you! From back country trekking deep into the mountains to more luxurious trips, they can do everything for you and your family or friends! I've been travelling with Original Travels during spring 2019 and I really enjoyed my stay. Going through small villages with very welcoming people, breath taking sceneries, very good meals and snacks... always with some fresh baked bread and olive oil and sweet mint tea! I have recommended friends to Original Travels and they have been very happy with their experience. Great Week in Morocco

We did a weeklong trip in May 2019 and had a fantastic time. Original Travels arranged a wonderful trip - they listened to what we wanted and figured out a perfect trip for us. Our driver was very nice and easy to work with. We fit in some extra hikes and adventures which made the trip even more fun. Excellent trip - I highly recommend Morocco and Original Travels

Personalised hiking in Maroc

We booked a 9 day trip with Abdel of OTTravel in october 2019. He was recommended by a friend who had hone with him twice already. The recommandation was duely founded. We had a fantastic experience on our trip. We visited the main cities by ourselves and wanted a true wilderness hike experience. We went through volcanic mountainous regions, camped in the strict middle of nowhere as we wanted. On our trip we were perfectly accompanied by competent guides, mule-riders and a cook. Our sleeping tents and eating area were up when we arrived at each site. The food was absolutely perfect, tasty and fresh. We had an intense trip planned over many parts of maroc and many many kimometers. We were extremely well taken care of. People were friendly and helpful. We met the actual owner and had good talks with the guides. We saw things we never saw before. All in all we highly recommend this travel compagny. The hikes are the highlight. Do 1 day in fes or marrakesh to see what a medina is, the go straight to the nature. Skip the desert and hike some more. And go hike with OTTravel.

Hi P-A, We are incredibly grateful that you took the time out to leave us this note, its people like you that make our job wonderful. Being a small company, most of our customers are referred to us by existing customers.—We work hard to meet expectations like yours, and we’re happy to hear we hit the mark for you. We look forward to serving you again in the future. Best regards, Abdellah

Best trip ever!

What can I say? Words just don’t do an experience like we had any justice. It was a breathtaking, sweeping view of a beautiful country rich in religious, cultural, historical and geographical wonders. Abdellah, our guide, and Mohamed, our driver (more importantly our good friends) took us on the trip of a lifetime. With Covid, the flights were a little tricky and we missed the first day of our scheduled tour. They were super flexible and accommodating and fixed our tour without any issues. When we arrived they were both there to greet us with smiling faces and a nice air conditioned car. We went to Chefchouen, the blue pearl of Morocco, Fes, Skoura Oasis, the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. (We had to skip Casablanca because of our flights.) We drove the whole way to each place. Abdellah and Mohamed pointed out all the details along the way and answered all of our questions. We ate amazing local food and experienced life like it is for the locals. Our Riads (little bed and breakfasts made out of old homes that are like mansions) were amazingly beautiful and unique at each stopping point. If you choose to go to Morocco, you have to go to the Sahara. It’s a must. We stayed at TIZIRI camp and were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves. It was magical. Please use Oroginal travels for your plans. A trustworthy company that will make your trip exactly what you want and need. Thank you guys. 🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

An awesome return to travel

Our trip to Marrakech and Imlil in the Atlas Mountains, planned and guided by Abdel from Original Travels, was a spectacular (!!) return to travel for a group of vaccinated expats coming from Abu Dhabi. We started out with a very smooth transfer from Casablanca to Marrakech with our wonderful (and safe!) driver, Samir, then had dinner at our gorgeous riad, Palais Sebban, a solid recommendation from Abdel. Our first morning, we took a super fun and informative cooking class at Maison Al Arabe then met up with our laid-back and kind local guide Hassan, for a loop through the Medina where we learned a lot about the culture and daily life of Marrakech and shopped for carpets, leather goods and argan oil. The following day we were driven to Imlil in the Atlas Mountains for unforgettable hiking, visits with local Berber families for lunch and tea and a night of stargazing and some of the best tajine of the trip from Khasbah du Toukbal. Then it was back to Marrakech for our last two nights. We booked hammam treatments at the Royal Mansour, one of the city's prettiest hotels, a stop at the Majorelle Gardens and YSL museum and a final loop through the souq. Phew! We are a relatively well-traveled group and I have to say this was a trip of a lifetime, thanks to Abdel. He was so responsive and helpful in planning and leading us, but also patient and sweet when it came to giving us time to relax and do our own thing. If you're looking to be a tourist, and I mean that in the very best sense of the word of experiencing and learning and feeling awe and gratitude for this big world, Original Travels is how to do it. Thank you, Abdel!
