This Bag Survived Our Move to New Zealand: Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Review
Whether you’re traveling the world or just need a burly mega-duffel for all your skiing, biking, and climbing gear, the Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel is an excellent choice.

Packing light does not come naturally to me . I’m (regrettably) the person breaking a sweat to shove their too-full carry-on into the overhead compartment, the one who throws an extra eight items into the backseat seconds before pulling out of the driveway for a road trip.
So, when my husband, son, and I decided to uproot our lives in Colorado and spend 4 months living/working in New Zealand, I was a touch nervous about fitting all our necessities (and “necessities”) into a reasonable number of suitcases. When I got my hands on an early model of the 2024 Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Bag, I breathed a sigh of relief.
Since mid-December, I’ve taken this mega-hauler on a road trip to Illinois, a ski trip to Steamboat Springs, Colo., and across the globe to New Zealand. Here on the South Island, the Black Hole has been a staple on weekend excursions in our trusty 2009 Nissan Vanette. I’ve hauled, rolled, shoved, stuffed, and squeezed it, and after more than 11,000 miles of travel , it’s clear the bag isn’t perfect … but it’s pretty darn close.
In short: After nearly 4 months of testing, I can confirm that the 2024 Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Bag ($419) delivers the durability and overall quality I’ve come to expect from Patagonia’s Black Hole luggage line. This bag is bomber, big enough to move a family across the world, and convenient for airport travel and weekend excursions. Launching this August, the updated model’s sustainability benefits and burly wheelset only sweeten the deal. This is a great duffel despite slight weight and storage penalties.
If you’re in the market for a smaller duffel or an option without wheels, check out our guide to the Best Duffel Bags of 2024 .
Editor’s note: The Black Hole 100L Duffel reviewed here does not launch until August 2024. ( Here is the current version .) We will update this review when a link is available.

Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Review
As this delightful Instagram vid explains, Patagonia’s Black Hole line of duffel bags has been around for decades. Over time, the Patagonia team has fiddled with the bag’s shape and expanded the range of size offerings.
I married into my first Black Hole duffel, a standard 40L version , circa 2011. Then I got the now-discontinued Black Hole Mini Messenger Bag, the Black Hole MLC Cube 12L , and the Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack 1L . I’ve trusted our fleet of Black Holes with everything from ski helmets and bike shoes to keys and laptops.
In keeping with the brand’s “ Earth is now our only shareholder ” sentiment, the 2024 Black Hole lineup puts Mother first with a fully recycled laminate coating on the exterior ( recycled TPU ) rather than using virgin TPU, which comes from petroleum. Using recycled TPU decreases carbon emissions and gives the new Black Hole lineup a sleek, matte finish rather than the familiar shiny one.
Patagonia designers also slightly revised the 100L model specifically. They moved the external pocket from the side to the “top” (the end that points up when rolling) to facilitate easier on-the-go access; updated the ease of repairability on the wheelset; and made the internal frame collapsible so it’s easier to store.
Size and Organization
Size is arguably the Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Bag’s biggest attribute. The bag holds a lot of gear — the equivalent of a 7-year-old child and a little bit of gear.
I had room to spare when packing for both a 2-week road trip to the Midwest and a 4-day ski trip. Had I taken advantage of the internal cinch straps, there would have been even more space. In packing for New Zealand, however, I needed to maximize the load while maintaining some semblance of order.
When it comes to organization, the Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Bag lives up to its name. Unzip the maw of this monster, and it’s just an empty cavity ready to eat whatever you throw in. Like prior models, two internal pockets attached to the lid provide great stash space for smaller items like socks, undies, cords/electronics, etc., but otherwise, the organization strategy is left up to the user.
In one aspect, that’s a benefit: The user decides if and how to use packing cubes like Patagonia’s 3L , 6L , and 14L “Cube” line. On the other hand, packing cubes up the price tag on your luggage setup considerably.
Personally, I dig packing cubes, but if I had my druthers, the 100L would have an additional compartment or two, including at least one with an anti-odor lining for storing dirty clothes.
Design and Durability
After experiences with checked bags getting lost and a gate-checked stroller returned with a crippled front wheel, I have minimal confidence in baggage operations handling my stuff with any care at all. Knowing that this Black Hole 100L bag’s exterior is polyester ripstop fabric, bolstered with a toughness-enhancing TPU finish (both recycled), helped to ease my concerns.
As it turned out, I had no need to worry. We checked the bag at Denver International Airport, and two flights and 21 hours later, we snagged it at baggage claim in without any noticeable damage.
The real durability test came when we walked more than a mile up and down escalators, through a quasi-creepy hallway, over a paved outdoor path, and across tile and low-pile carpet to get from international arrivals to domestic departures in Auckland. An important note: this test (trek) wore a hole in one of our other duffels. The Black Hole Wheeled Duffel Bag 100L was unscathed.
A week after arriving, I discovered the bag fit perfectly in a cutout in the back of our van. Since then, I’ve slid the duffel into its little nook for each weekend adventure, scraping the exterior against glorified plywood, catching it repeatedly on a metal screw, and banging it on the van’s linoleum floor in the process. Even now, it barely shows the beating it’s taken.
Updated Wheelset on Black Hole Duffels
The wheels’ durability warrants applause as well. Pavement, of course, is no problem, but the roughly 3-inch (80mm) wheels also make it easy to cruise over chunky gravel driveways.
The dirt, tufts of dried grass, and tree roots at our campsites weren’t a problem, either. Even after testing them on a rocky beach. I was impressed to see only minor scuff marks on the plastic wheelbase.
Weight and Storage
Weight typically isn’t an issue for a wheeled duffel since you’re rolling, not carrying, the bulk. However, weight matters when you’re checking a bag and trying to avoid the fee for going over 50 pounds. That’s one scenario when the Black Hole Wheeled Duffel Bag 100L’s heft (around 10.5 pounds) can be problematic.
In my mind, packed size is the duffel’s biggest downside. Maybe that’s no fault of Patagonia’s. It’s just the nature of owning a bag this big. The Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Bag’s updated internal frame allows the upper half to collapse on itself, but you still need to find a spot to house a roughly 33 x 16 x 5.5-inch bag.
Other similar bags, like the No Matter What Duffel Bag from Eagle Creek, offer more in terms of packability.
Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel: The Final Word
Patagonia’s updated Black Hole Wheeled 100L Duffel Bag has a sleeker finish with the new recycled TPU-film laminate. Durability-wise, I’ve continued to knock around the duffel handles on ski trips, shove and scrape the exterior on van adventures, and wheel it across campsites. It’s proven durable, and then some.
The size is also an enormous attribute when you’re hitting the road — or the skies —and need to pack a lot.
Of course, its dimensions also make the bag heavier and harder to store. The Marie Kondos of the world will want to budget for packing cubes (better organization, more weight). Overall, there’s no question that the updated 100L model is a stellar addition to the heritage Black Hole line.

Our relationship with nature not only defines our history, it shapes our future, too. Patagonia’s Black Hole Duffel Is a Classic Carry-All Travel Bag
Its massive single compartment eats just about anything—just like a black hole.
Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?
But what makes the bag so great? To find out why Patagonia’s Black Hole duffel bag has remained a legend for so long, we got our hands on a 70-liter version of months ahead of its Spring 2024 release. We tried it out by packing it, carrying it, and tossing it around for a few weeks—now, it’s one of our favorites. Here’s why we love it.
Patagonia Black Hole 70L Duffel Bag
What Is Patagonia’s Black Hole Duffel Bag?
Introduced in 2004, the Black Hole duffel is Patagonia’s flagship luggage piece. It’s available in four sizes: 40 (the only one considered airline and train carry-on friendly), 55 , 70 , and 100 liters. The bag is made of weather-resistant ripstop polyester, which gives it a techie look and a lot of durability, and it comes in various colors. It’s frequently recommended by product and gear review sites, topping lists as one of the best duffel bags according to Wirecutter , Outdoor GearLab , Travel + Leisure , and, of course, Popular Mechanics .
The Spring 2024 version of the Black Hole duffel gives minor updates to the bag’s original design and makeup. The TPU shell is now made with recycled materials. The interior stuff pocket is also bigger than the last model for easier repacking into itself. As always, Patagonia has added a few new colors to the update as well.
A Deceivingly Tough Exterior Shell
I got the 70-liter Black Hole duffel in Vessel Blue, which makes the bag look deceivingly vibrant and squishy. It’s actually tough as nails.
The bag’s shell is TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane, and this is the reason why the Black Hole Duffel is so recognizable. TPU gives the bag a sheen close to that of an Ikea tote bag ; similarly, the material helps maintain the duffel’s shape and integrity. However, for its newest line of Black Hole duffels, Patagonia opted for recycled TPU instead of virgin, giving its exterior a less glossy look. That could be a dealbreaker for those after aesthetics, but reusing old materials is always a plus in my book.
The duffel is made from 100 percent recycled polyester ripstop, and the TPU-film laminate adds a protective weather-, oil-, grease-, and abrasion-resistant layer to the synthetic fabric. As if ripstop isn’t enough, the polyester is also 900-denier (denier is a measurement of thread strength), meaning its threads are more robust than your average seatbelt.
The inside liner is 200-denier, 100 percent recycled polyester, further adding to the bag’s tough-as-nails makeup. You can overstuff this with a few heavy items without worrying about a rip or tear, and it’ll ply and tug without stress. Additionally, its handles are reinforced to carry heavy loads, so if you wanted to do something a little chaotic and pack, say, two bowling balls into your duffel, it’d be just fine.
Packing weight aside, the bag is rugged enough for throwing, tossing, and kicking (if you want) to the side. It can eat scrapes without tearing and hold up against sharp objects brushing against it. I’ve packed up and then dropped it outside of my car plenty of times and it’s held its integrity, without a dent or scratch on the bottom.
It’s Lightweight and Packs Down
Storing unused suitcases and luggage is one of the biggest annoyances of having a travel bug—doubly so if you’re an apartment-dweller. The Black Hole duffel may take up space when it’s open and ready for packing, but it can also pack into itself when it’s not being used. You fold it, pack it into its massive mesh pocket, and then tuck it away in a closer or hang it up on a hook. The claimed weight of the 70-liter pack is an incredibly light 3 pounds and 2.8 ounces, so you can store it vertically without breaking your hangers.
A Massive Main Compartment
The Black Hole duffel has a zippered, U-shaped lid that features an interior mesh pocket split into two zippered compartments (it’s a single zippered mesh pocket on the 40- and 55-liter duffels) on the inside, plus a small zipped pocket on the outside. The exterior side pocket sits between two daisy chains, which you can use to dangle additional sacks or hiking boots via carabiner or rope .
The 70-liter model is large enough to pack a lot of things—enough for a weeklong trip (and maybe more with the right packing cubes ) or a small family’s gear for a weekend trip. I’ve stuffed this to the brim with six pairs of pants, a packing cube with a pair of size 11.5 shoes, a bag full of toiletries, two hats, four books, a Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 camera , six T-shirts, and a bulky fleece pullover hoodie—and I still had room to pack more. If I wanted to, I could add a lightweight sleeping bag, outdoor gear like mugs and lights, and a keychain to the daisy chain using carabiners to carry even more.
This duffel supports your carry style, whether you prefer to sling your bag over the shoulder, on the back, or in a one-handed grip. It has two large, removable padded straps to wear it as a backpack, or take one off for a shoulder strap. Both straps can be removed for a fisted grip or to put the bag away.
For the most part, carrying this bag isn’t arduous. The backpack straps are incredibly comfortable over the shoulders and easily adjust to shift weight off your back. Wearing it, all of the innards slide to the bottom of the duffel and stack a bit, but if you can fill it to capacity, this shouldn’t be an issue (more on that later).
The Black Hole duffel is designed to give you the most space, and unlimited opportunities to customize your packed goods however you’d like. You could use it as a bag for your photo equipment, a weekender, or your closet for a months-long backpacking trip. But that freedom can feel unrewarding and frustrating if you don’t have enough things to pack or thrive on keeping things organized.
This thing is a massive bucket, so it’s tough keeping items in place due to its minimal pockets and lack of internal straps. While plenty of user reviews say they use their Black Hole duffel to carry fishing gear or bulky camp goods, those packing for a weeklong getaway may find it hard to organize a pile of clothing, a few pairs of shoes and other hard goods, all while keeping fragile electronics safe.
Packing cubes are helpful for tidy stuffing, which is vital as the bag feels wonky and wobbly when you don’t pack it to the brim. Patagonia sells its own packing cubes that fit well inside a Black Hole duffel to help alleviate the problem, but, of course, it’ll cost you. But to be fair, this isn’t an issue unique to the Black Hole duffel—if you really need structure, consider another type of bag, like a spacious pack or a rolling suitcase .
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel, Reviewed
Its packing freedom, variety of ways to wear, and near-indestructible shell makes the Black Hole duffel a worthy purchase, and its cool style just adds to the package. A solid travel companion, it’s tough enough for the great outdoors and roomy enough for a week-long vacation and more. Though carrying it can feel lopsided if your bag isn’t filled to capacity, packing cubes better its performance, or you can opt for a smaller size to suit shorter trips. It’s hard to find a more versatile bag—we look forward to the next 20 years of the Black Hole duffel line.

My first night camping in a travel trailer was the beginning of two years spent living full-time on the road in a vintage 1969 Airstream Overlander. I rolled all the way from Florida to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, from Austin to Arizona, and spent a spring camped out steps from the crisp rushing water of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. I never considered myself a rugged outdoorsy type, but after jumping in head first to the van-lifer lifestyle, I picked up a few skills, hacks, and gear tips that made life on the road a lot more comfortable .
As an RV camper, I chased an endless summer, following fair weather in order to camp comfortably year round. But for most of North America, spring and summer are peak camping seasons and great times to take stock of your camping gear as REI drops prices to make room for new inventory . You’ll find normally pricey outdoor gear with major markdowns (think: up to 70 percent off) that will delight any camper, hiker, and adventurer, as well as last-chance savings on winter apparel essentials and ski accessories. But, you'll have to act fast to snag the best deals; they're selling out fast. Read on to see what one former full-time camper recommends picking up from this limited time REI sale.
When I started camping, I was as far from Bear Grylls as you could get. I didn’t grow up camping and the hobby felt intimidating, but I soon learned that you don’t need to have all of the high-tech gear and equipment to have fun exploring the great outdoors. I started building my outdoor gear kit with the basics: a quality puffy jacket, base layers, a headlamp, and long-lasting boots, and made sure to rent a simple and compact four-person tent — but you can get this Northwood backpacking tent for 60 percent off , bringing it down to about the same price as a two-day rental.
However, the most important thing to have with you on a camping trip is a curious mind and a love for the surprises of nature. After that, you’ll want dry socks , plenty of layers , a raincoat , and extra water — don’t forget the extra water, even if you don’t think that you’ll need it. Whether you’re an avid outdoorsy type, or just want to be prepared for anything, these top REI spring deals will set you up for a summer season of well-traveled adventures.

Tactical outdoor bags are designed for usability and durability, making them a carry-all that can withstand all kinds of adventure. Many are equipped with features that come in handy no matter how you travel: waterproof exterior, RFID-protected pockets, ripstop fabric, washable interiors, alternating carrying straps, water bottle pockets, and collapsible capabilities.
When I traveled to Paris last year, I packed my collapsible REI duffel (now 30 percent off), folded compactly in its carrying envelope, in my carry-on. By the time I made my way back home, I had acquired so many souvenirs, vintage clothes, and French pharmacy beauty essentials that I filled up the duffel and checked it on my way back. On my next trip, I’ll be packing this on-sale convertible tote so I can transform it into a backpack when I need to hop on an e-bike to zip around.

When I was camping in the Airstream, I’d always have a “setup beer” and “breakdown coffee.” In the afternoon, once I arrived at a new campsite, I’d crack a cold one and pour it into an insulated thermos to keep it chilled while slowly setting up camp. In the morning, a piping hot coffee would go in the same stainless steel thermos so it stayed warm as I broke down and packed up. All that to say, a versatile beverage bottle that can do it all — for both hot and cold drinks — is a camper’s right-hand. REI sources some of the best brands for insulated drinkware, like Hydro Flask, whose Coffee Cup travel tumbler has been marked down to $26 this weekend.
But the retailer has more than just bottles on sale right now; REI’s other travel accessories are designed for smart, savvy adventures — like this Sherpani Women's Lima Shoulder Bag that's perfect for any outing and 30 percent off, or the Thule Subterranean PowerShuttle Travel Case that'll make packing a breeze.

In the spring, retailers make massive markdowns on last-season’s stock in order to make room for new season colors and styles. Fluffy fleeces and layerable flannels come in handy on chilly camp mornings, which are common in the summer if you’re pitching a tent in destinations like Michigan’s Upper Peninsula or the Rockies. And you might not need these high-tech insulated running leggings now, but you’ll be thanking yourself for jumping on their discounted price come those chilly fall mornings (which are just a few months down the road).

If you want to instantly blend in with the camping crowd, grab yourself a pair of Blundstone Classic Chelsea Boots (currently marked down by a rare 50 percent in select colors and selling out fast). The Tasmanian-made boots are on the feet of mountain town residents everywhere. But more than just a fashion statement, the fan-favorite boots are simply well-made and incredibly versatile as an everyday shoe. I’ve worn my Blundstones with a silk skirt and cashmere sweater, and also hiked them across muddy Appalachian trails and streams — they’re simple boots that can do a lot.
Now’s also the time to get your hands on the Nikes of the outdoor gear world: Chacos. The best (in my opinion) hiking sandal brand, Chaco's new-and-improved Z/Cloud 2 Sandals are 25 percent off ahead of all of your summer hikes.

Headlamps may look goofy, but they’re incredibly useful at the campsite. When you’re camping you always need your hands free, so things like flashlights actually aren’t super useful. The best headlamps have various light intensities (like your car’s headlights), and a red-light setting so you’re not blinding your fellow campmates and you can better view Dark Sky parks. This Snap Solo Headlamp from Princeton Tec has an articulating and removable lamp head and its 48 percent off.
Don’t forget to pack a small gas canister or portable stove , which are absolutely essential for boiling water — and most importantly, making coffee. Speaking of this essential elixir, don’t be caught on the trail with coffee grounds and no way to use them. Have a collapsible pour-over that lives in your camping kit, like this one from Pourigami that's 26 percent off.
- Alps Mountaineering Dash Chair , $45 (originally $120)

It doesn’t have to be ski season to have a chilly morning at camp, where you need some extra comfort. If you’re camping in the Southern Hemisphere in the summer months (say Patagonia or Australia), then you can hit the jackpot on winter apparel before your trip. But even summer Alaska cruises call for insulated layers.
Winter gear is notoriously expensive, so spring sales are the best time to get good deals. Start with staple base layers that both insulate and wick away moisture, like this core base layer top from REI Co-Op that's 30 percent off. The gold standard of cold weather gear is a “puffy,” or down jacket. This Lole puffy (now 59 percent off) is a jacket that you can wear down to the threads. Still not warm enough? Stock up on Ignik's hand and toe warmers (one pack is currently less than a dollar), so you always have some on hand (pun intended).
