St Francis Links ready to host first DP World Tour event

As St Francis Links prepares to host its first Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournament with this month’s SDC Championship , the focus is on presenting a golf course that is “as playable as it is beautiful”.

St Francis Links

That’s the vision St Francis Links CEO, Jeff Clause, and his team have for when this Jack Nicklaus Signature Course hosts the most global tournament in its history with the $1.5 million SDC Championship from 16-19 March.

“We’ve spent 16-and-a-half years now trying to make this a golf course that’s as playable as it is beautiful. The golf course is ready,” Clause says of a course that was voted South Africa’s Best New Course in 2007 and which is currently ranked fourth in the country.

St Francis Links has already established itself as a championship venue through its hosting of several tournaments on the Sunshine Tour, and more recently as the home of the prestigious South African PGA Championship.

“We’ve hosted everything from junior golf tournaments to women’s senior tournaments and everything in between. For the past two years we’ve hosted the South African PGA Championship which we wanted to associate with because of its history and standing in South African golf,” says Clause.

“The fit with SDC (Skills Development Corporation) is perfect for us because that’s what we have in our future here as well. We’re looking to create more facilities here for skills development. This tournament is a match in a lot of different ways. We want to use this opportunity to show off our area within the Kouga Local Municipality. We’re a golfing, surfing, hiking, cycling, boating and fishing mecca and we want to attract more people. This tournament will do that for us.”

Nestled on a hill overlooking the picturesque seaside village of St Francis Bay, Clause predicts that St Francis Links should be a challenging but fair test for this field.

“Every hole here offers everything, and we’ll have a good variety of par-three shots in particular. We’ve made a few small changes here and there. But we also know what Mother Nature can do at this golf course. If we get a bit of wind this golf course will be formidable from any tee and any pin placement. March weather is generally a bit more passive and then there will be a lot of birdies and opportunities out there.

“The golfer who can manage his ball around this golf course and keeps his ball in play will be right up there in the end.”

4 (2022) & 5 (2021)

St Francis Links occupies one of the finest links sites, built in high rolling dunes overlooking St Francis Bay and the Indian Ocean. The dunes stretch for kilometres and you could have built as many links here as there are at St Andrews.

Jack Nicklaus excelled himself as a designer with his varied challenges, short and long, wide and narrow, uphill and down, each hole complemented by exquisite greens complexes with bent grass surfaces that hold their own mysteries. The course asks for brave shots and inventive ones. With cool season grasses it might not be a firm and fast-running links, yet it shouts links terrain of a magnificent quality from No 1 to 18.

The scene is set with a remarkable opener, requiring a drive over the edge of a bunker in a dune to a hidden fairway. Four different sets of tees make the course enjoyable for everyone, and forward tees are even the sensible choice for low-handicaps on a windy day. Some bunkers are deep and severe, yet the course has become more playable in recent years with fairways widened.

This is a True Links, although some purists might not appreciate the water hazards, unavoidable due to the Sand River running through the property. A large dam on the upper part of the course frames holes 13 to 15. It guards the left side of 13, shortest of the par 5s. And at the dramatic par-4 18th, played from a high tee, another prominent hazard left of the fairway makes for an intimidating tee shot.

Each hole is named, and some aptly describe what lies ahead. The par-3 fourth, Double Vision, has two separate greens, one on a lower level used most of the time, and another more difficult target higher on a dune. Eye of the Needle at No 8 is just that: you thread your tee shot through a gap to a narrow fairway. No 11 is simply called Eish! That’s what many golfers exclaim standing on the elevated tee when they first see this spectacular par 4 carved through the dunes.

The double-storey clubhouse occupies a scenic position above the 18th green. There’s a fine-dining restaurant, and is a popular venue for functions.

St Francis Links was named South Africa’s Best Golf Course at the 2021 World Golf Awards in Dubai.

SA PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

St Francis Links hosted this Sunshine Tour event for three years from 2021 to 2023, the first time the PGA Championship has been at a coastal venue. Winners: Dean Burmester (2021 on 271); George Coetzee (2022 on 273) and Rupert Kaminski (2023 on 280).

Feature Holes

Of the 229 holes-in-one at St Francis Links, 114 have been at No 17, where Nicklaus designed a Redan-style green in the dunes playing between 190 and 125 metres. Golfers of all abilities have improved odds of a hole-in-one if they hit the green, which slopes towards the back, where the pin is always placed. It has become a fun hole where groups are entertained with sundowner shootouts. Several other holes stand out as equally unique creations. The opening par 4 over a dune; the risk-and-reward short par 4 at No 5 with its array of bunkers; the wide fairway and hidden green at 12. And then there are a quartet of demanding par 4s at Nos 9, 11, 15 and 18, each with its own individual character.

Accommodation

Luxury self-catering homes are available to rent through the estate’s website. The St Francis Lodge has 10 guest rooms close to the clubhouse. A new sectional title development by Mantis Group features two-bedroom en-suite units (with double garage) overlooking the 18th hole with ocean views.

Practice Facility

Spacious 280-metre range with grass bays some distance from clubhouse. Short-game area adjoins clubhouse.

Did You Know

1/ St Francis Links was where Par-3 golf began locally. CEO Jeff Clause had the bright idea of converting the course into 18 Par-3 holes – “The Ultimate Par 3” with its own scorecard – employing temporary tees 75 to 130 metres from each green. It makes for a quick round using carts, and is popular on windy days. There is even a club championship.

2/ Voted Golf Digest Best New Course in 2007, and a constant presence in the Top 10 since then. Walking is allowed, yet many use carts.

3/  The estate has grown to 220 completed homes, out of a projected 540. St Francis Links has experienced an increase in property sales since Covid as young families move into the area.

4/  Numerous elite tournaments, pro and amateur, have been played here, including the DP World Tour in 2023 with the SDC Championship (won by Matthew Baldwin on 270).

5/ Jordan Duminy, 16, set a new amateur record of 65 (nine birdies) in winning the SA Under-17 title in 2019.

6/ The clubhouse is a popular wedding venue, the course hosts numerous charity days, raising more than a million rand annually, and a Park Run is held on the estate every Saturday morning.

7/  Dr Lynn Slogrove has won 43 club championship titles in the East Cape, at Humewood (24), St Francis Bay (13) and St Francis Links (6).

The Young Crew Out In Front At SA PGA Championship

by SFT | Sep 22, 2023 | Sport , St Francis

SA PGA Championship

Sunshine Tour rookie Keegan Mclachlan broke new ground yesterday as he claimed a share of the first-round lead with Robin Williams in the PGA Championship at the St Francis Links, coming in with an outstanding four-under-par 68.

The SA PGA Championship is one of the most prestigious titles in the local game and this year the event celebrates the significant support of the Eastern Cape Tourism and Parks Agency and African Bank.

It is the first time Mclachlan, who has a title apiece on the Blue Label Development Tour and the Altron Big Easy Tour, has led on the Sunshine Tour.

Playing in his 11th event, he started South African golf’s second-oldest professional tournament on the back nine and birdied his first two holes, before picking up another two birdies to go to four-under through seven holes.

Back-to-back bogeys on the tricky par-four 18th and first holes were offset by three successive birdies from the fourth hole. Mclachlan closed with a bogey-five on the par-four ninth hole.

“I played quite nicely in the morning and it was a good start. There was not too much wind, but it started to pick up on my back nine. But overall it was a good round, for most of the day I kept the ball in play well, my approach shots were good and I made a few nice putts,” Mclachlan said.

History not on his side, but Surry firm on changing it

Steve Surry is seeking to become the first Englishman to win the South African PGA Championship. Photo: Carl Fourie/Sunshine Tour

ST FRANCIS (Eastern Cape)  – Steve Surry will take a two-stroke lead into Sunday’s final round of the South African PGA Championship at St Francis Links , and is looking to become the first Englishman to win this championship since it became a stroke play event.

Women’s Golf: Dropped shot fires Lydia Ko to equal course record

With a limited number of fans looking on as the Sunshine Tour welcomes back spectators to its events, Surry climbed to 13 under par overall with a third round of 67. South Africa’s Luca Filippi and Albert Venter are chasing him on 11 under par after they both signed for rounds of 67.

Only seven foreigners – excluding Zimbabwean golfers – have managed to win the South African PGA Championship since 1965, when it moved from being a match play event to a stroke play tournament. And there isn’t an Englishman amongst them.

“I would’ve thought one of the English boys would’ve snuck in there already,” said Surry. “But if I am able to win it, it would be great in terms of the stature of this tournament in South African golf. I’ve been coming out to play on the Sunshine Tour for years now and I love it here. It feels like a second home for me. And in my off time I spend a lot of time with friends in Gqeberha and St Francis. It was great to play in front of crowds again and see some familiar faces from around here. This is probably the closest I’ll get to a home event outside of England.”

Surry led the first round with an impressive 63 but then struggled in the wind on Day Two with a 73. But on Saturday, with the course once again in a forgiving mood, the Englishman surged ahead with a fantastic start of six under through this first six holes, including four birdies and an eagle.

Amateurs: Jaglan finishes strong, Nakajima Asia-Pacific champ

“You can’t really ask for a better start than that. The course played a lot easier than the second round where there was a little bit of wind. It doesn’t take a lot of wind to make this course very tricky.”

Fellow Englishman Robin Williams joins European Tour champion Dean Burmester just three shots off the lead. Former South African PGA Championship winner Louis de Jager would’ve been in that group as well were it not for a double bogey on the 18 th

St Francis Links to host SA PGA Championship

A general view of St Francis Links, venue for the 86th edition of the SA PGA Championship

The SA PGA Championship, SA’s second oldest professional golf tournament, will begin a new chapter in its illustrious history as the 86th edition will be played at St Francis Links from November 4 to 7.

This will mark the first time St Francis Links hosts the flagship event of the PGA of SA.

“The association is proud to partner with the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency to stage the event in the province where the PGA was founded in 1922,” PGA of SA chief executive  Ivano Ficalbi said.

“This partnership will add to the PGA’s transformational strategy and allow the PGA to achieve numerous objectives such as the growth and education of diverse candidates to membership of the PGA within the province as well as promote the fabulous Eastern Cape as a golf tourism destination.”

IVANO FICALBI

Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency chief executive Vuyani Dayimani also expressed delight at hosting one of South African golf’s premier tournaments.

“The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency mandate is to promote economic growth through tourism and we look to utilise this golf tournament as such,” Dayimani said.

“Our partnership with the PGA is aimed at stimulating the Eastern Cape province’s tourism sector and thus save and provide much-needed jobs as the tournament will support local businesses and attract local and international tourists.

“Golf has been one of the growing sports during Covid-19 and from a sport tourism point of view it aligns to outdoor offerings that comply with necessary health protocols.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to tap into its resources and audiences for tourism benefit as per [the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency’s] events strategy of seeking to use events that have a huge following and loyal fan base to sell and showcase the Eastern Cape as a tourism destination of choice to wider audiences across the globe.”

Darren Fichardt won the 2020 championship to add his name to a list of champions including Gary Player, Ernie Els, Nick Price, Louis Oosthuizen and Dale Hayes.

“The SA PGA Championship has a proud history and occupies a premier place on our Sunshine Tour schedule,” Sunshine Tour commissioner Thomas Abt said.

“The work done by the PGA of SA is vital in terms of the general health of South African golf and growing the game around the country, and it’s a privilege for us to work with them and the [Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency] in showcasing this championship at a world-class venue such as St Francis Links.”

SA PGA Championship promoter Jimmy Headbush said: “We have a world-class golf course, leading professional golfers, a top broadcast partner in SuperSport and the beautiful Eastern Cape province all combining for a recipe for a successful tournament.

“To stage an event of this magnitude, it is vital to seek partners that share in the ethos of the PGA Championship of being embedded in tradition and excellence.

“We are delighted to include Dirk Ellis Volkswagen, Allesverloren Wine Estate, Provantage and Cape St Francis Resort to be part of this championship.

“Most importantly, the tournament is embraced and supported by the provincial government, the Sarah Baartman Municipality, Kouga Local Municipality and South African Tourism.” —  Vlismas Media

Scottie scheffler takes 5-shot lead into monday finish at rbc heritage.

  • Brentley Romine ,
  • Brentley Romine

Scottie Scheffler’s likely fourth win of the year – and second straight – will have to wait until Monday morning.

Scheffler led by five shots and was through 15 holes when play was suspended for darkness Sunday evening at the RBC Heritage. Inclement weather rolled in earlier in the day, delaying play for 2 hours, 32 minutes.

The final round will resume at 8 a.m. ET on Golf Channel/Peacock, marking the second unscheduled Monday finish on the PGA Tour this year – and first since the Cognizant Classic in early March.

Scheffler, who has won three of his last four starts (Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players and the Masters), took the 54-hole lead with an 8-under 63 Saturday at Harbour Town. He chipped in for eagle on the par-5 second on Sunday before adding birdies on Nos. 5 and 13. He’s not dropped a shot since carding double bogey on his third hole of the tournament on Thursday, and he’s in position to post his 39th consecutive under-par round to begin this season.

Wyndham Clark, who won a weather-shortened AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am back in February and is twice a runner-up to Scheffler this year, is currently the clubhouse leader at 15 under. Patrick Cantlay and J.T. Poston are also 15 under, each through 17 holes, while Sahith Theegala is 15 under and grouped with Scheffler.
