1. Explore Dallas

One of the most popular things to do in North Texas is to explore the city lights and attractions of Dallas.

Known for its thriving food culture, pulsing bar scene (including the infamous Margarita Mile ) and impressive arts district, Dallas makes for an exciting city break during your visit to North Texas.

Some of the most popular attractions are the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza which commemorates the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the Crow Collection of Asian Art .

2. Visit the American Airlines Center

Dallas often plays host to some of the biggest live music performances in North Texas, with musicians performing at both the more intimate Toyota Music Factory and the American Airlines Center .

If you want the full rock and roll experience, be sure to catch a concert at the American Airlines Center which hosts big name performers for a night to be remembered.

The American Airlines Center is also home to the NHL’s Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks, offering sport enthusiasts a chance to see the local NHL heroes in their homeground.

3. Visit the Reunion Tower

Located in the southern end of downtown Fort Worth, the expansive water gardens are an architecturally designed meeting hub for locals and visitors alike.

The Water Gardens act as a cooling oasis for residents during the often-stifling hot weather, and provide a (literally) refreshing break from the concrete sights of downtown.

Built in 1870, the Waco Suspension Bridge is a true site to behold, and you don’t even have to worry about cars as it’s only open to foot traffic.

As you walk across, you’ll cross the Brazos River, which used to be a much more dangerous affair as it had to be done by ferry instead of bridge.

While it wasn’t easy to build the bridge, thanks to the nearest resources being hundreds of miles away, it was eventually completed and was actually the first major suspension bridge in Texas.

It’s been foot-traffic only since 1971, almost 100 years after it was built, and there are newer bridges today that keep the city moving.

However, it still stands as a tribute to the first bridge that really put Waco on the map and let it flourish the way it did.

From Picassos to Grecos to Goya, the collection here is stunning and ranges from the 10th to the 21st centuries so you can really understand how the art movements developed as did the history of Spain.

Pause and take in the oil sketches or marvel at the wood sculptures and canvases.

The museum began with a gift to the university from a man named Algur Meadows, who often visited Spain and collected art.

25. Browse through Spice Village

If you want a shopping experience like no other, head to Spice Village in Downtown Waco!

It’s not far from Magnolia Market and it’s a treasure trove of boutique shops with everything from T-shirts to cat toys to home decor on sale.

It’s colorful, funky, perfect for finding gifts, and has a ton of Texas-themed products as well.

This is the kind of place you go to browse and then come out with 8 things you didn’t know you needed, which we’re all for.

26. See Thanks-Giving Square

If you need some moments of contemplation, seek out Thanks-Giving Square, which is an art installation in Dallas that seeks to help inspire the spirit of thanksgiving and gratitute for what we have.

There’s a meditation garden and chapel, and it’s been well-used and loved since it was designed in 1976.

The chapel has gorgeous stained glass and is open to all people, and you can visit daily for free.

27. Walk around White Rock Lake

Whether you want to hike, bike, or just take a packed lunch to enjoy, White Rock Lake is the place to do it in North Texas.

It’s one of the most popular parks in Dallas and spreads over 1,000 acres, even including the Dallas Arboretum as part of the park!

Bring your dog to play in the dog parks with his furry friends or explore the wetlands (don’t forget your walking shoes!).

3. Dinosaur Valley State Park

Ever dream of walking in the footsteps of dinosaurs? Well, you can do that and a lot more in Dinosaur Valley State Park . 

Located near Glen Rose, Dinosaur Valley State Park preserves actual dinosaur footprints fossilized in mud along the Paluxy River. You can clearly see these indelible tracks firsthand—and discover how small your feet stack up to those belonging to prehistoric giants!

In addition, the park offers 20 miles of hiking trails, as well as camping, backpacking, kayaking, and guided horseback riding tours. 

4. Magnolia Market at the Silos – Waco, TX

Since 2015, millions of Fixer Upper and Chip & Joanna Gaines fans have made the pilgrimage to Magnolia Market at the Silos , Magnolia’s central hub, making Waco’s downtown alive and bustling.  

As Waco’s must-see attraction, the Silos have developed into a lively community center (with theme park vibes) of shopping, dining, and entertainment. After you’ve gotten your Magnolia souvenirs, make a stop at their local bakery and coffee shop for some tasty treats.

In addition, Waco’s downtown offers an abundance of shops and restaurants, as well as two local landmarks—the Dr. Pepper Museum and the Waco Suspension Bridge. 

5. State Fair of Texas – Dallas, TX

There’s nothing more legendary in North Texas than the State Fair of Texas , an annual tradition since 1886. Proclaimed as “the Most Texan Place on Earth,” the State Fair of Texas offers over 100 free attractions, over 70 midway games, and gobs of live entertainment.

Of course, a visit wouldn’t be complete without enjoying the fair’s famous fried food offerings. Fried oreos, fried lemon icebox pie, fried guacamole, twice-fried albondigas , fried shrimp étouffée, fried bubblegum, fried beer, fried butter… the list goes on and on! 

While at the fair, be sure to take a selfie with its iconic greeter, Big Tex, and ride the famous giant ferris wheel, the Texas Star. 

6. Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Did you know that the second largest canyon in the United States is located in North Texas? Considered the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro Canyon is 120 miles long, 20 miles wide, and 800 feet deep in some places. 

To experience the breathtaking beauty of this Texas treasure, head over to Palo Duro Canyon State Park . Here you can enjoy the canyon’s expansive vistas up close through over 30 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, as well as the Palo Duro Canyon scenic loop drive.

Visitors can spend the night at the park’s campgrounds, glamp in luxury sites, and even stay in cabins along the canyon rim or deep in the canyon floor. In the summertime, guests can enjoy the park’s TEXAS outdoor musical at its onsite amphitheater as well. 

7. The Texas Eiffel Tower – Paris, TX

Maybe you’ve been to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, but what about the other Eiffel Tower in Paris, Texas ? 

The North Texas town of Paris draws visitors from all over to see the Texas version of the Eiffel Tower adorned with a cowboy hat on top. If you’re looking for a unique cultural photo-op for your Instagram account or family Christmas card, this is it!

After posing in front of this famous roadside attraction, make time to explore the small town charms of Paris’ historic downtown square. 

8. Tyler Rose Garden – Tyler, TX

If you’re a fan of roses or idyllic garden settings, you’ll want to visit the Tyler Rose Garden during your North Texas adventure. With 14 acres of 500 different rose varieties, the Tyler Rose Garden is the largest public rose garden in the United States.

Get your cameras ready as you soak in the tranquil beauty of over 38,000 roses. The garden is free to visit, and, while open year-round, peak bloom season occurs in May and again in October.

After exploring the variety of roses in the garden, check out the Tyler Rose Museum nearby to understand the historical impact of Tyler roses. And if you’re there in October, make sure you see the Texas Rose Festival , a beloved annual tradition since 1933. 

9. The Big Texan Steak Ranch – Amarillo, TX

Enjoying a big steak is a quintessential Texas pastime, and at the Big Texan Steak Ranch , you can eat your very own giant 72 oz steak, for free. Well, I should say it’s only free if you eat it (and some fixin’s) within one hour. 

Such a contest has given the Big Texan worldwide fame, making it a must-see if you’re driving Route 66 through Amarillo. This local institution is an over-the-top tourist haven with old-school saloon decor, live music, an extensive menu, and even a shooting gallery. 

If you need more time to get over your food coma, the Big Texan also provides an Old West-themed motel and RV park nearby. 

10. Reunion Tower – Dallas, TX

An icon of the Dallas skyline, Reunion Tower provides one of the best panoramic views of the sprawling DFW Metroplex. Known as “The Ball” by locals, Reunion Tower has been delighting visitors in the heart of downtown since 1978. 

The tower’s GeO-Deck really draws the crowds with its indoor and outdoor 360-degree views from 470 feet up. If you can, make the trip to the tower at night to see the stunning Dallas skyline all aglow in city lights—it’s a view you won’t soon forget!

In addition, Reunion Tower hosts a number of special activities, including family and date night packages, as well as seasonal events and live entertainment. 

11. Texas Ranch Roundup – Wichita Falls, TX

Cowboys, ranches, and rodeos are synonymous with all things Texas, and the best place to see these converge is at the Texas Ranch Roundup in Wichita Falls. 

For over 40 years, the Texas Ranch Roundup has been showcasing ranch life and Texas’ legendary ranches with an epic ranch rodeo. Every year, real ranch families and ranch hands face each other in competitions like barrel racing, bronc riding, wild cow milking, and team branding. 

This ranch rodeo extravaganza also features live music, a trade show with over 100 vendors offering Western goods, and a chuckwagon cooking contest. Grab your cowboy hat and spurs and join in on the fun!

Top North Texas State Parks To Visit

Here are amazing North Texas State Parks to visit.

State parks are a popular way to spend time outdoors for physical and mental well-being any time of year, significantly since the pandemic has damaged many things. These ten state parks in North Texas to visit are worth a view and a consideration for a beautiful road trip with the family.

Texas has over 80 state parks, and over fifteen are in North Texas. When visiting a state park in North Texas this spring (or summer), think about gorgeous views of nature, bird watching, hiking, geocaching, and picnics. Choosing the best park to take the family to may be the most challenging, but the time will be well spent.

I’ve listed ten North Texas State Parks and why I think so.

North Texas State Parks To Visit

All Texas State Parks charge a small admission fee to enter. However, purchasing a Texas State Park Pass might be wise if you know you’ll visit many in a year. It costs $7 for one person and $25 for each additional person living in the same household. You can read more information at the link, like the benefits of the pass and more.

Something else to think about is fishing in State Parks. If you want to catch that considerable bass or crappie, there is no fishing license required to fish from the shore or a pier; however, fishing from a boat requires a fishing license for each person fishing.

Things To Know About Our Texas State Parks

• The year 2023 marks 100 years of Texas State Parks
• Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is our newest park to open sometime this year.
• Texas parks just went up by one. There are now 89 state parks spread out all over the Lone Star State,
• No alcohol allowed in Texas State Parks
• A fishing license is not necessary when fishing in Texas State Parks

1. Bonham State Park

Bonham State Park is a beautiful park with a small 65-acre lake in the rolling hills and prairies northeast of Dallas, about 74 miles. RVs are welcome, and tent camping with water and electricity is available. This park would make a great weekend for camping, swimming, fishing, and boating. Bring your hiking boots and bottled water to hike the 8.5 hiking trail that weaves around the lake.

Fishing: If you’re hoping to catch crappie, bass, catfish, or bluegill, a wonderful pier extends out to the lake –  or take your boat for better luck.

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars to see birds and other wildlife from afar.

2. Lake Tawakoni State Park

About a 56-mile drive north of Dallas is Lake Tawakoni State Park. The lake is well known for its large population of blue catfish, and over 30 fishing tournaments are held annually. Other fish in the lake include black and white crappie, largemouth bass, striped and hybrid striped bass, and white bass.

Many wildlife live here, including red and gray foxes, bobcats, coyotes, possums, turtles, frogs, snakes, raccoons, beavers, squirrels, armadillos, mink, and white-tailed deer.

3. Ray Roberts Lake State Parks

There are two state parks, and Lake Ray Roberts surrounds them both. Ray Roberts Lake Stare Parks is 56 miles north of Dallas and Fort Worth and is a top-rated park for tent camping.

Ensure your camping gear is updated with all the latest gadgets and accessories before heading out.

• Ray Roberts Lake State Park Johnson Branch in Valley View, TX

Pro Tip: If going to Isle Du Bois in the spring, Texas Tulips Farm is nearby, and you can pick your own tulips. The end of February and March are the best times to go. Check the hours before you go.

4. Cooper State Park

Another state park with two parks is in Sulphur Springs, TX, and the other is in Cooper, TX. Cooper State Park is a little more in the northeast of Texas, about 90 minutes from Dallas. Plan for fishing, hiking, swimming, geocaching, and more. You can even bring your horse. No horse, no problem. Bring your kayak or canoe. Both parks have screened shelters and cabins to rent.

Pro Tip: If a large group is coming and you need more room, rent out one of the pavilions.

5. Eisenhower State Park

Eisenhower State Park is a bit further northwest of Denison, Texas, almost into Oklahoma. It overlooks Lake Texoma and is perfect for swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and biking. Shaded campsites for RVs and tents and screened shelters are available. It’s a great park for picnics and nature waking. Restrooms are available throughout the park.

Campers will find walk-in tent camping and open-ground camping if you’re brave …me – no way! But don’t worry, camping with water and electricity is also available. Purtis Creek State Park has rules on boating and fishing, so please read up on them for your safety and concerns.

Pro Tip: If you like to shop for antiques and old odds and ends, First Monday Trade Days in Canton is not far away.

8. Cleburne State Park

Cleburne State Park is not too far from Fort Worth, which I also recommend visiting. If time allows, visit the Chisolm Trail Outdoor Museum. It’s a delightful experience; you’ll get an excellent history lesson from the blacksmith and other volunteers in character. The park is not far at all from the museum. It doesn’t cost much to enter – maybe $3 a person. Pro Tip: The downtown area is quite the charmer and worth a walk-around if you have the time.

9. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park

This state park is under construction as I type this. I just drove through this area last week. This will be a gorgeous place to hang out and feel nature’s dirt between your toes. I’m sure locals are waiting patiently for the opening. The future is looking good. Look for this state park to open sometime in late 2023. Check here for updates – Palo Pinto Mountains State Park .

Once developed, this rugged, beautiful park will offer hiking, camping, fishing, stargazing and other outdoor activities.

10. Dinosaur Valley State Park

If I could recommend one state park to visit this spring or summer, it would be Dinosaur Valley State Park , especially if dinosaurs and dinosaur tracks are on your child’s wish list. Located in Glen Rose, Texas, where dinosaurs once roamed, you can find fun things to do for the whole family.

When we were there last, we enjoyed hiking, crossing over rocks, geocaching, and having a picnic. This is a state park worth going back to again and again, if only for the day. There you have it, North Texas State Parks to visit – which seems like a match for you? Just In: Because of North Texas’s drought in 2022, more dinosaur tracks have been spotted!!

Big Bend National Park

This sprawling metropolis promises a jam-packed itinerary for every type of traveler, whether you're traveling with the family or on a romantic getaway . Explore the many museums, parks and historical sites the city has to offer, including the infamous Dealey Plaza, where JFK was assassinated, or get to know Dallas' vibrant, artsy neighborhoods like Trinity Groves and the Design District. And if you're visiting during football season, catch a Dallas Cowboys game to see state pride at its best. However you spend your time, you'll be surrounded by top-notch restaurants and a surplus of shopping options.

Every year, more than 500,000 people visit this national park along the U.S.-Mexico border to spend some time outdoors. Big Bend National Park features hundreds of miles of paved and dirt roads for scenic drives, as well as 150-plus miles of hiking trails. While exploring the park's sections of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Chisos Mountains and the Rio Grande, keep your eyes peeled for more than 450 bird species, including several kinds of woodpeckers, thrashers and sparrows. At night, camp (or glamp) under the moonlight to see why Big Bend is one of the best dark sky parks in the country.

For a different kind of Texas vacation, skip the state's main cities and beach towns in favor of a visit to Fredericksburg. This Texas Hill Country locale is known for its superb shops, rich German roots and tasty wines. When you're not enjoying some retail therapy on Main Street, learn about the town's connection to Germany at the Pioneer Museum. Don't forget to sample some of Fredericksburg's delectable vino before you leave; you'll have your pick of more than 50 wineries and tasting rooms in and around Fredericksburg.

Historical relics like The Alamo are no doubt San Antonio's biggest draw. However, you don't need to be a history buff to enjoy all the city has to offer. The River Walk makes for a soothing stroll along the San Antonio River, while the expansive Brackenridge Park offers a variety of attractions and amenities. Active travelers can practice their swing at the park's golf course and ball fields, nature lovers can pass the time in its stunning Japanese Tea Garden and families can get an up-close look at the on-site San Antonio Zoo's animals. Before you leave, sample a San Antonio staple – the puffy taco.

If hiking is one of your favorite pastimes, then you'll want to venture to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This national park by the southern Texas-New Mexico border houses eight of the state's 10 highest peaks, including the iconic El Capitan, and features 80-plus miles of hiking paths, such as traveler-approved routes like Devil's Hall and the Guadalupe Peak Trail. Although the scenery is stunning year-round, for extra-memorable vistas, visit in fall when the park's tree leaves turn vivid shades of red, orange and yellow.

This small town on Mustang Island (about 40 miles northeast of Corpus Christi) provides ample opportunities for fun in the sun. When you're not sunbathing, parasailing or splashing around at the beach, put your angling skills to the test in the "Fishing Capital of Texas" or sign up for a dolphin-watching cruise. You'll also want to keep an eye out for the endangered whooping crane and other birds in this bird-watching paradise. If you love festivals, time your visit to coincide with one of Port Aransas' events, which focus on everything from art to music to food.

Texas is home to some prime Gulf Coast shorelines , and South Padre Island is considered one of the best. South Padre offers 34 miles of relaxing beaches along the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While the island has a reputation for being a prime party spot for spring breakers, the rest of the year it's favored by families thanks to its affordability and bevy of kid-friendly attractions. Head to Sea Turtle, Inc. to learn about local sea turtle rehabilitation efforts, or visit Beach Park Waterpark to cool off on a hot day.

The capital city's colorful character takes Texas to an entirely new level. Austin offers loads in the way of culture, cuisine and natural scenery. While here, enjoy unique outdoor areas like Zilker Metropolitan Park (where you'll find the natural Barton Springs Pool), various museums and plenty of delectable Tex-Mex joints. The best way to soak up Austin's contagious energy is to visit Sixth Street. This music hub is packed with bars, restaurants and live music venues that have helped Austin earn its "Live Music Capital of the World" moniker. For a souvenir, head to SoCo to pick up a pair of authentic cowboy boots.

Originally inhabited by wild horses, the aptly named Mustang Island is now known for its miles of beaches and outdoor activities. On this 18-mile-long barrier island, which sits about 30 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, visitors will find Mustang Island State Park, a popular place to go mountain biking, kayaking and swimming. The park is also home to endangered sea turtles and more than 400 bird species, making it an excellent destination to spot wildlife, and boasts 5 miles of beaches. For more outdoor recreation outside the park, travelers can visit North Packery Beach to enjoy water sports like kiteboarding, wakeboarding and surfing.

Once a lesser-known, low-key getaway, this small town just north of Mexico now attracts space enthusiasts thanks to its SpaceX launch site. Beachgoers will still find plenty of allure with Boca Chica's 8-mile-long stretch of sand, but remember to bring your own equipment since water sports rentals like surfboards and kiteboards are not available on-site. You'll also want to plan ahead, as the beach is closed near rocket launch dates. While here, save time for wildlife watching, as the area is a haven for various bird and sea turtle species, particularly in spring and fall.

Renowned as one of America's top barbecue destinations, Houston offers travelers a finger-licking good time. But did you know Houston is also a culture hub? Within the urban sprawl, visitors can check out museums galore, from NASA's impressive Johnson Space Center to the quirky Art Car Museum. Many of the city's restaurants and shops are also covered in Instagram-worthy murals. Plus, with the world-class Houston Zoo , verdant Buffalo Bayou Park and a children's museum, Houston is an ideal (and affordable) vacation spot for families. Consider purchasing a CityPASS to save even more coin.

Corpus Christi features several scenic shorelines and can't-miss attractions to keep you entertained for days. Popular stretches of sand in this Gulf Coast city include McGee Beach and North Beach, which is also home to two of Corpus Christi's most visited sights, the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington. Additional museums and entertainment venues can be found in SEA, the city's Sports, Entertainment and Arts District. Meanwhile, music fans can visit several sites dedicated to the emblematic Tejano singer Selena, including the Selena Museum and the Mirador de la Flor memorial.

Sitting in between Fort Worth and Dallas (roughly 23 miles from both), Grapevine delights all travelers, whether they're outdoorsy types, historians or wine lovers. Lake Grapevine is a popular boating and fishing spot, while its surrounding trails attract hikers and bikers. Meanwhile, history buffs can engage in 19th-century heritage events at Nash Farm or ride into the past on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. As its name suggests, Grapevine is also home to several tasting rooms along Texas' Urban Wine Trail. What's more, with some of the best water parks in Texas , an aquarium and a LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Grapevine is incredibly kid-friendly.

Located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, Galveston attracts Texans looking for a convenient place to spend some time at the beach. The island features family-friendly spots like Stewart Beach (with amenities like lifeguards, volleyball courts and a playground) and Pleasure Pier (which features an array of games and rides). Meanwhile, Schlitterbahn Waterpark offers yet another place to play. Away from the sand, visitors can explore the shop-, restaurant- and nightclub-filled Strand District, named a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Travelers will also want to check out other historical sights, such as Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion.

Easy to reach by ferry from Port Aransas, this former ranch is now a prime beach destination. Because San José Island is privately owned, the island's only publicly accessible land is its 21-mile stretch of unspoiled sand situated below the vegetation line. But visitors will find plenty to do on the beach. The island's more than 600 kinds of fish and roughly 300 bird species make it a terrific place to go fishing and birding. Other popular pastimes here include shelling and surfing.

Calling all wine enthusiasts! Did you know that there are over 25 wineries in North Texas? I was surprised too. So I ventured out to find the very best wineries in North Texas and create this ultimate guide.

Typically, when people think of Texas wine, their minds immediately go to the Fredericksburg wineries . As much as I love Fredericksburg, I am here to tell you…Move over Fredericksburg because some of the best wineries in Texas are in the North Texas Wine Country.

My ultimate guide of the best wineries in North Texas in the North Texas Wine Country has everything you need to know. I include road trip itinerary ideas, what each winery is known for, my personal favorite wines, information about each winery, and more. So sit back with a glass of wine, and enjoy!

I have made this guide user-friendly, here is how it works. Each winery is alphabetized and features a snippet of my favorite wines, dining options, tasting prices, and what the winery is known for. To read an informative guide on each winery, click “Read more”. Enjoy!

About the North Texas Wine Country

Texas is quickly becoming one of the largest wine producers in the United States. In fact, there are over 500 wineries in Texas. Of those 500, some of the very best wineries in Texas are all within the North Texas Wine Country.

Moreover, the North Texas Wine Country is quickly becoming one of the largest winemaking and grape growing regions in Texas. The wineries are spread throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) metroplex to Denison, Gainesville, Saint Jo, Waxahachie, and other surrounding cities. So depending on where you live in the DFW metroplex, you can easily find one of the best wineries in North Texas within a 1-hour drive.

Each winery has something unique that makes them stand out from the rest. From a casual wine experience to a more formal tasing room, wine pairings with food, craft wine cocktails, wine slushies, and more. There are special qualities and features to every winery that will surely leave its mark on you. Who knows, maybe you will become a wine club member at one or all of them!

Road Trip Itinerary Ideas for the Best Wineries in North Texas

Ideally, you can spend all day at just one winery, but if you are eager to do a little wine hopping, I have a few itineraries for you. The itineraries range from the perfect day trip to a weekend getaway.

Here are a few road trip itineraries from DFW to some of the best wineries in the North Texas Wine Country.

Day Trip to Celina

Take a day trip to Celina and visit up to three wineries in one day! You can enjoy a lovely afternoon outside at Caudalie Crest, a formal wine tasting experience at Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard, or a unique experience enjoying Italian and Californian wine at Carmela Winery.

It is possible to visit every winery in one day, but it would be slightly rushed. So I recommend picking two of the three wineries. Trust me, you will want to relax and enjoy every sip at these wineries in Celina.

Day Trip to Historic Downtown McKinney

Historic Downtown McKinney has two wonderful wineries on the square, Landon Winery, and Lone Star Wine Cellars. Enjoy a little shopping at the boutique shops, dine at some award-winning restaurants, and finish with wine tastings at the respected wineries for a quick romantic getaway in McKinney .

Day Trip to Van Alstyne and Whitewright

Take a relaxing and fun day trip on Sunday to Van Alstyne and Whitewright. I recommend Sunday because Cooley Bay has an amazing bottomless mimosa brunch with their sweet wines and “Cooleys”. After a delicious brunch, head to FarmResort Winery in Whitewright for a fun day on the lake with all-inclusive activities, pizza, and of course, wine.

Day Trip to Ennis During Bluebonnet Season

One of the best places to find bluebonnets in Texas is Ennis. In fact, Ennis is famously known for its Ennis bluebonnet trail . And what better way to end a day trip to Ennis than with some sweet wine tasting (pun intended). Ennis might be known for its bluebonnets, but Sugar Ridge Winery is known for its budget-friendly 15 wine tasting and abundant sweet wines.

Weekend Getaway to Denison and Saint Jo

For a fun wine weekend getaway, you can easily visit six wineries in several cities within two days. Drive to Denison and begin your wine journey at Hidden Hangar Winery & Vineyard. Enjoy a grand winery tour on-site followed by a lovely wine tasting. Then make your way into downtown Denison to enjoy another wine tasting at Homestead Winery.

After a wonderful afternoon in Denison, make your way to Fitzel Winery in Gordonville and spend the entire evening here. Rent one of their cozy cottages and watch the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine paired with a delicious dinner.

In the morning, drive to Muenster and Saint Jo to wine hop at the three local wineries – 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery, Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard, and Arché Winery & Vineyard. Each winery offers something different than its neighbors. 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery has breathtaking views of three valleys, Blue Ostrich Winery has several wine flights with an ostrich pen, and Arché Winery & Vineyard has some of the best Chardonnay in North Texas.

Weekend Getaway to Aubrey, Valley View, and Gainesville

For a short weekend getaway, visit Fortunata Winery for a fun evening on the patio with live music, wine jello shots, and wood-fired pizzas. Spend the night in one of their beautiful villas and wake up fresh to make your way to Valley View.

Firelight Vineyards is a hidden gem in Valley View and the perfect place to spend the afternoon. Enjoy a wine tasting with a fabulous lunch from their extensive menu. Or kick it up a notch and sip wine cocktails made with 48 proof Chardonnay.

In the evening, drive or take a train to Gainesville and finish your getaway watching the sunset behind the woods at Deschain Cellars. Enjoy a unique winery tour and special wine experience with single grape varietal wines from the award-winning winemaker.

Best Wineries in North Texas

Every winery offers something special to offer its guests. Whether it’s award-winning wines or a unique winery experience, you will not be disappointed when you visit these wineries in the North Texas Wine Country.

4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery

Location: Muenster

Known For:  The best scenic views in North Texas, unique barrel tasting tour, mountain biking trails, and their award-winning dessert rosé wine.

My Favorite Wines: Viognier, Ranch Red, Nectar Nero (award-winning), and Blackberry & Red Wine.

Tasting Price:  Four wines of your choice for $8. Additionally, there is also a winery tour and barrel tasting that you should not miss for $18.

Dining Options:  The on-site Camo Cafe serves a variety of delicious food such as cowboy caviar and chips, Caprese salad, fish tacos, flatbread, and more.

Lodging: Several campsites, and a spacious guest house that accommodates up to 8 people.

If you are looking for a winery that has fantastic wine and breathtaking views, look no further than 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery. This is hands down one of the best wineries in North Texas because it offers visitors incredible experiences.

Guests can enjoy some of the best views in Texas of three valleys full of trees. The views are especially beautiful during the fall season because believe it or not, 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery has fall foliage.

In addition to the best views and award-winning wines, 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery also has an awesome 9-mile mountain biking trail. Guests can bring their own biking equipment and enjoy a thrilling trail finished with a glass of wine.

More importantly, 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery is eco-friendly. On the 1100-acre property, there are 7 turbines, solar panels on the barn house, and geothermal at the barn house and tasting room. The property also includes a fabulous wedding venue, 10 acres of vineyards, a guest house, and more.

Lastly, a visit to 4R Ranch Vineyards & Winery is not complete without an educational barrel tasting. This is one of the most unique and special barrel tastings you will ever experience. Guests have the opportunity to taste young wines and mature wines to see the progression of winemaking. As a bonus, guests will also be able to taste what is coming on the menu soon.

Arché Winery & Vineyard

Location: Saint Jo

Known For:  One of few Texas wineries that grow Chardonnay, 100% Texas grapes, and a focus on French varieties.

My Favorite Wines:  Chardonnay, True Friends, and Roussanne Dessert.

Tasting Price:  Four wines of your choice from the tasting menu for $15. In addition, there is a vineyard and winery tour (60 minutes) which includes an educational wine tasting with the winemaker for $20 per person.

Dining Options:  Light fare options of hummus and chips, Margherita flatbread, cheese & charcuterie board, chocolates, and a lemon bar.

If you love Chardonnay, then you will love Arché Winery & Vineyard. Arché Winery & Vineyard is one of the best wineries in North Texas because they are one of a handful of wineries in Texas that grows Chardonnay and grows it well.

In addition to Chardonnay, Arché Winery & Vineyard also grows a majority of two other French grapes, Syrah and Roussanne. With that said, the winemaker enjoys focusing on French varieties, especially grapes known in the Rhône region and aging wines in French oak.

For a unique wine experience, Arché Winery & Vineyard offers a vertical wine tasting once a year. This is a tasting in North Texas that you do not want to miss because it is a truly immersive and educational experience. A few lucky guests get the opportunity to taste one grape varietal, such as Chardonnay, for every year the winemaker produced it (up to four years). So you can taste the progression of the wine.

Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard

Known For:  Ostriches still on-site, family-owned and operated winery, an extensive winery tour, and a variety of wine tastings.

My Favorite Wines:  Six Harts Cab (most popular and favorite wine), Poco Seco, 2 Muscateers, Rosato Moscato, and Orange Muscat.

Tasting Price:  There are three different wine tastings to choose from – Blue Ostrich (all white), Red Ostrich (all red), and Black Ostrich (all sweet). Each wine tasting comes with four wines for $12. In addition, there is an extensive winery tour which includes a tasting in the barrel barn and cellar for $22 per person.

Dining Options:  Light fare options such as a smoked salmon plate, hummus, mixed nuts, ostrich beef stick, chocolates, and more.

Lodging Options: A guesthouse with beautiful views of the Red River Valley – accommodates up to 8 people.

One of the most unique wineries in North Texas is Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard because of its history as a working ostrich ranch. Though the ostrich ranch has retired, its history lives on through the winery, and the few ostriches still on-site today.

There are plenty of ways to experience Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard. Guests can sit back and relax under the pavilion listening to live music with a wine-tasting flight, enjoy views of the beautiful vineyards and scenic Red River Valley, hang out with the ostriches, and partake in the extensive winery tour.

The winery tour takes guests on a grand journey through the history and winemaking process at Blue Ostrich Winery & Vineyard with wine tastings along the way. There are four parts to the tour with an added bonus at the end. Guests have the opportunity to explore the ostrich pen, crush pad, vineyard, barrel barn, and wine tasting cellar for a fantastic winery experience.

Carmela Winery

Location: Celina

Known For:  Port wines, and a majority of imported wines from Italy, France, and California.

My Favorite Wines:  Sangiovese and Nero D’Avola.

Tasting Price:  Four wines of your choice or winemakers’ choice for $10 and four red wines for $12.

Dining Options:  There are no dining options, but there are dinner events throughout the year that pairs wine with lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, and more.

Carmela Winery is the perfect winery for anyone wanting a Napa Valley or Sonoma experience without leaving North Texas. The winemaker offers guests a variety of different wines. From wine produced on-site to imported wines from Italy, France, California, and Argentina.

Most wineries will harvest, crush, ferment, and produce grapes on-site. However, Carmela Winery is different because the winemaker focuses more on bringing unfinished wines from Italy to the winery and completing the wine process on-site. The winemaker will enhance the flavor of wine, age it appropriately in barrels, then bottle and label the wine to complete the process.

In addition to the wines, what I enjoy about Carmela Winery is the ambiance. The winery has a Texas ranch style with a touch of Italian flare. Moroever, the coolest part inside the winery is the glass window showroom. Guests can watch the winemaker produce wines through the display window while enjoying the fruits of his labor.

Cassaro Winery and Vineyard

Location: Ovilla

Known For:  Italian owned and operated winery, a very family-friendly atmosphere, 100% Texas grapes with traditional Italian winemaking, and Avante Rosé – a multiple, international award-winning wine.

My Favorite Wines:  Ponte, Luce, Avante Rosé, Montepulciano, and Texano Superiore.

Tasting Price:  Four 1 oz. wine samples of your choice for $7.

Dining Options:  Light Italian fare including create-your-own wood-fired pizzas, cheese & charcuteries boards, garlic cheese bread, bruschetta dip, and more.

Cassaro Winery and Vineyard is an Italian family-owned and operated business. It is also an Italian winery through and through, but more importantly, it is a way to honor the family’s heritage.

The grandparents of the winemaker, John, were from Sicily and Naples. His grandfather passed all of his knowledge of winemaking to John along with other Italian traditions. With that said, Cassaro Winery and Vineyard is not only one of the best wineries in North Texas, but it is also a tribute to John’s family.

Keeping with the Italian family traditions, Cassaro Winery and Vineyard is one of the most family-friendly wineries in North Texas. The winery is known to make everyone who walks through the door feel like FAMILY. Moreover, there is a large outdoor lawn filled with backyard games such as bocce ball and corn hole, a fire pit for s’mores, romantic gazebos, tree swings, and more. This is truly a winery to gather with friends and family where everyone can have a great time.

Furthermore, there are several things that make Cassaro Winery and Vineyard unique. The winery is inside a 1910 Texas ranch. The Cassaro’s kept the outside historical, but once you step inside, you are immediately transported to Tuscany.

Throughout the year, the Cassaro’s will host different wine pairing events. A few events include a traditional balsamic vinegar and olive oil wine pairing or a “sweeter” wine pairing with Tuscany chocolates and recipes to take home.

As for the wine, every wine produced is made from 100% Texas grapes made with Italian traditions. John approaches the Texas grapes with an Old-World style using traditional Italian winemaking. This is why Cassaro Winery and Vineyard features more dry and red wines on the menu.

Caudalie Crest Winery & Vineyard

Known For:  Small and loyal community, 100% family-run winery, no oak barrel wines, High Tea on the farm, and a private wine tasting + cheese pairings with the winemaker.

My Favorite Wines:  Prairie Mist, Diablo Rojo, and Red Caress.

Tasting Price:  A choice of 4 wines for $9.

Dining Options:  Cheese and charcuterie boards, goat cheese (made in-house) with wine jelly, and must order: Sue’s homemade savory shortbreads.

Lodging Options: Overnight parking for RVs through Harvest Hosts.

Caudalie Crest Winery & Vineyard is a family-run boutique winery on their own home property. What makes this winery special is the attention to detail. The winemaker, Ray, does everything by hand with either homemade equipment or micro-production equipment. From the winemaking to the bottling and labeling – Ray is a one-man show!

With that said, Caudalie Crest Winery & Vineyard has a very loyal community because locals will happily help during the wine process. The locals love to help because when they sip their fruits of labor, the wine tastes so much sweeter!

There is plenty to love about Caudalie Crest Winery & Vineyard, but personally, I love their support to the local businesses. Again, this touches on community and how much Caudalie Crest Winery & Vineyard includes the locals.

The grapes are 100% from Texas and come from either the vineyard on the property or from local neighbors just 15 minutes away. Additionally, Caudalie Crest Winery & Vineyard also sells local honey, jalapeño relishes, jellies, handcrafted signs, wine bottle candles, and more.

Cooley Bay Winery

Location: Van Alstyne

Cooley Bay Winery is one of the best wineries in North Texas for sweet and fruit wines. Yes, fruit wines! Cooley Bay Winery specializes in producing wine from fruit juices in addition to grapes because what is wine but juice from grapes?!

The fruit juices come from outside the state of Texas and are 100% all-natural. From there, the process of fruit wine is the same as your everyday winemaking process. The result is absolutely delicious. Though the fruit wines are on the sweeter side, the sugar residue is not overwhelming at all. Moreover, the flavor and consistency taste just like a wine made from grapes.

In addition to fruit wine, Cooley Bay Winery is most popular for its “Cooley”. A “Cooley” is an all-natural wine cooler. When you purchase wine coolers at the store, you will notice malt liquor is typically a used ingredient. Whereas Cooley Bay Winery uses no extra ingredients in the “Cooley”, it is 100% wine.

Cork House Winery

Location: Waxahachie

Known For:  High-quality wines with grapes from Texas and around the world, an adult-only winery (no children under 18 years of age), vast menu selection with a strong focus on sweet and red wine, and the family secret homemade pimento cheese.

My Favorite Wines:  Twisted Sister, Desert Skies, Rowdy Texan, Sip of Sunshine, and Rio Grande.

Cork House Winery is the perfect place to hang out with your loved one or friends. From house-made wine to fermented alcohol-based cocktails and wine-a-ritas, this is an adult-friendly winery… so leave your kids behind and enjoy yourself!

Instead of receiving grapes off the vine, Cork House Winery receives leftover juice from all around the world (mostly Italy and California). Then the winemaker produces the wines on-site in 13 stainless steel fermenters.

Cork House Winery has a strong focus on producing sweet and red wines. There are several varieties of red wines that range from medium-bodied to full-bodied, bold blends, smooth blends, strong tannins, and more. The sweet wines have some of the most creative flavor combinations you will ever find. For example, one of the BEST sweet wines is the Sip of Sunshine, a coconut Pinot Grigio that tastes like you are on the beach.

Deschain Cellars

Location: Gainesville

Known For:  The unique decommissioned shipping containers, recycled furniture and materials, and old-world style wines.

My Favorite Wines:  Trebbiano “Barrier Block”, Grenache Rosé “Purtell”, Sangiovese “La Pradera VYD”, and Deschain “Unchained”.

Dining Options:  Light fare of gourmet pizzas, cheese board, trail mix, and the popular “chunk of cheese”.

Deschain Cellars is one of the most unique wineries in North Texas as it is built from decommissioned shipping containers. The shipping containers provide a very cool aesthetic to the winery and atmosphere. More importantly, it has provided Deschain Cellars with the best insulation for even the hottest Texas summers.

In addition to the decommissioned shipping containers, Deschain Cellars is committed to using as many recyclable materials as possible. So if you look closely around the winery, you will notice repurposed picnic tables, cinder blocks turned into a couch, and more.

Recently opened in 2020, Deschain Cellars is quickly becoming one of the best wineries in North Texas due to the owner and winemaker, Willem Johnson. Willem has over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry with some time spent in France, Vail, and now, North Texas. Moreover, he is the first Texas-based winemaker to win a Sweepstake Medal from The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, one of the oldest and most prestigious blind wine tastings in the country.

As an Old-World style winemaker, Willem believes in minimal intervention to allow the grapes to truly speak for themselves. So a majority of the wines are of a single grape varietal. The result is absolutely delicious, but don’t just take my word for it, go see for yourself!

Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard

Location: Celina and Dallas Farmers Market

Known For:  The formal tasting room, exclusive wine club membership, and award-winning wines.

My Favorite Wines:  The signature wines – Divine Red, Divine White, and Garden Red (sweet).

Tasting Price:  A formal wine tasting experience includes a selection of five wines for $15.

Dining Options:  Delicious Napa plates with house-made dips, grilled to order hot dogs and hamburgers, and an array of cakes are available for purchase.

Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard is a family-owned and operated boutique winery. The owners, Linda and Clark, are passionate about producing award-winning wine from Texas grapes. As a family business, their daughter creates award-winning labels and their son is the award-winning winemaker. Together, this family has created one of the best wineries in North Texas.

There are several things that make Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard special and unique. Overall, Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard has the sophisticated atmosphere of a Napa Valley winery with warm Southern hospitality.

More importantly, this winery is sustainable. There are cage-free chickens at the vineyard that are used during the wine process and the eggs are for sale on-site. Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard also collects rainwater in a large vessel that supports the pond which waters the vineyard. Furthermore, the rainwater is also used to wash the glasses and guests receive it as still drinking water. How cool is that?!

Lastly, the formal tasting room is unlike any tasting room in DFW. From the ambiance to the high-level of service, and olive oil palate cleanser – this is a wine experience you do not want to miss.

The wine tasting menu changes week to week (sometimes day by day on busy weekends) to provide repeat guests the opportunity to try several wines. On most occasions, the menu will also include wines featured in the wine club so members can choose their favorites to be in the membership box.

By the end of your wine tasting, you will probably become a member because the wines and community at Eden Hill Winery & Vineyard are one of the best.

FarmResort Winery

Location: Whitewright

Known For:  Being a one-stop destination with fun activities on the lake, medspa, organic farm, and more – all while enjoying delicious wine.

My Favorite Wines:  Roses are Redlish, Malbec, Fruits of our Labor, and a “Farmosa”, (moscato with cranberry juice) their signature beverage.

Tasting Price:  There is no wine tasting available – only bottle purchases are available, but you can still enjoy the wine on-site.

Dining Options:  Cheese & charcuterie boards, pizzas, and seasonal items such as BBQ.

FarmResort Winery is a premier, healthy living destination for your mind, body, and spirit. Furthermore, it is a great resource and place to visit from the DFW and North Texas area to educate yourself on sustainability – all while enjoying fabulous 100% Texas wines.

The winery is just a small component of this large and fantastic family-owned and operated business. In addition to the winery, FarmResort Winery is a wedding and event venue, an organic farm, a lake with all-inclusive activities, a medspa, a cooking class, and more.

The estate has 142 acres with plenty of space to grow. In addition to the events and activities previously mentioned, there are plans to create a farmers market with produce grown on-site, farm to table dinners with wine pairings, more cooking classes, pick your own tulip field, a farm to salad tour, cottages to stay at, bottomless mimosa brunches, and more.

Firelight Vineyards

Tasting Price:  There are three different tastings – four wine tastings of your choice for $10, eight wine tastings of your choice for $20, and a 1/2 oz tasting of any dessert “port-style” for $5.

Dining Options:  Gourmet cuisine featuring gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. (Keto-friendly options coming soon). The menu includes salads, appetizers, cheese boards, soup, signature flatbreads, desserts, and more. Must order: bruschetta and Sicilian flatbread.

Firelight Vineyards is a hidden gem in North Texas that you do not want to miss. A lot of people will pass through Valley View on their way to Turner Falls or WinStar World Casino, but Firelight Vineyards is THE reason to stop in this town. This little winery might be small, but they took us by surprise with how much they have to offer.

There is a beautiful “secret” patio with lush flower gardens and basil plants, an extensive menu of healthy and delicious entrees, a greenhouse to grow produce for the kitchen, specialty drinks made with their signature Chardonnay that is 48 proof, and of course, their vast wine selection.

Though the grapes are not 100% from Texas, it is for a special reason. The owners, Meredith and George Eaton, want to represent their home roots. This is why they receive grapes from the state of Washington, George’s home state. In addition, they also have 3 acres of vineyards near Lake Ray Roberts which provide amazing nutrients and soil to the vineyard.

What truly makes Firelight Vineyards unique and one of the best wineries in North Texas is the signature Firelight 48. Firelight 48 is their Chardonnay fortified with brandy to make the wine 48 proof. Guests can enjoy Firelight 48 on the rocks, straight, or in one of the many cocktails.

Fitzel Winery

Location: Gordonville

Known For:  Chef-driven cuisine, 100% Texas grapes, relaxing atmosphere, and paying it forward with donations to a variety of causes.

Fitzel Winery is a wonderful winery that is all about having fun and relaxing with family and friends. Moreover, this winery is a one-stop destination for a fun family weekend or a romantic getaway. In addition to the winery, there is a chef-driven menu and cottages on-site.

You can easily visit Fitzel Winery to enjoy a glass or bottle of wine, relax on the patio, watch the sunset, taste chef-driven cuisine, and spend a lovely evening inside a cottage. Wake up, and enjoy it all over again!

The cuisine at Fitzel Winery is so delicious, it deserves a stand-alone restaurant. The menu is very simple and straightforward with classic entrees such as hamburgers, shrimp tacos, and chicken wings – but everything is executed to perfection and every bite is packed with flavor.

What I love most about Fitzel Winery is its big heart, generosity, and support to local small businesses. The owner, Jeanette, feels blessed for the life she has been given. Therefore, she is committed to paying it forward. Every wine label has a unique story that is committed to helping a special cause. For example, the wine “Gramps Red”, is named after her grandfather who had Alzheimer’s. For every purchase of the “Gramps Red” bottle, two dollars are donated to the Alzheimers Association. She also donates to a veteran’s organization and pet shelters.

Lastly, the cottages. There are three cozy cottages on the property for guests to relax and enjoy. Each cottage has enough room for a queen-sized bed and a loft for 1 – 2 kids. Though small, it has everything you need – a fully equipped bathroom with a toilet and shower, small counter space with a sink, single-serve coffee machine, comfy bed, bathrobes, and more. It is a great place to stay for a wine weekend getaway.

Fortunata Winery

Location: Aubrey

Known For:   Tuscany ambience, wood fired pizzas, and a fun outdoor patio.

My Favorite Wines:  White Peach, Muscat Canalli, Red Blend (signature), Grenache, and Cabernet Franc.

Tasting Price:  There are two wine tastings offered – 4 wines for $7 or 6 wines for $10. Guests can pick and choose which wines they would like to taste from the menu.

Dining Options:  Delicious appetizers (must order the pull-apart bread), wood fired pizzas, and cheese & charcuterie boards.

Lodging: There are luxurious villas that accommodate 1 – 5 people and houses that accommodate up to 10 people. These villas and houses are perfect for a romantic getaway or hosting family and friends for a special event.

Fortunata Winery is one of the best wineries in North Texas because it transports you to Tuscany, Italy. The winery has an old-world stone exterior, Tuscan-style villas, wood-fired pizzas, and fantastic wines that all represent Italy.

A few of the grapes come from the High Plains in Texas, while a majority of the grapes are from Northern California. Moreover, the wine list at Fortunata Winery offers a variety of wines such as classic Texas peach wine, Chardonnay, a rare dry Moscato, Grenache, and more. For something a little less traditional and fun, Fortunata Winery also serves wine jello shots!

In addition to a variety of wines, Fortunata Winery is special because of its lively outdoor patio. There are string lights hung from the trees, beautiful greenery, a fireplace, an authentic wood-fired oven, and a stage for live music. Being on the outdoor patio is the perfect place to bring family, friends, and loved ones for a relaxing afternoon or evening.

What more could you need than an outdoor patio with wood-fired pizzas, appetizers, wine, live music, and good company?

Hidden Hangar Winery & Vineyard

Location: Denison

Known For:  Rieslings, being a unique property of a historical airport in the 1920s – 1950s, the largest winery in the Texoma American Viticultural Area (AVA), 100% Texas grapes produced on the estate’s vineyards, and a variety of different winery tours.

My Favorite Wines:  Dry Riesling, Rosé, Barnstormer, Cabernet Franc, Sweet Riesling, and Riveter Rosie.

Tasting Price:  Three wines of your choice for $6 and five wines of your choice for $10.

Dining Options:  A rotating menu of daily specials made in house – options can include chili, soup, BBQ, tamales, and more.

Hidden Hangar Winery & Vineyard has a lot of uniqueness and excitement making it easily one of the best wineries in North Texas. It is the largest winery in the Texoma American Viticultural Area with 38 acres of vineyards. Moreover, the vineyard supplies ALL of the grapes to the winery. There is no need to receive grapes outside of the property. That is pretty amazing!

There is also a lot of history on the land that Hidden Hangar Winery & Vineyard sits on. The property used to be an airport in the 1920s – 1950s which was home to the Barnstorming planes. This historical airport had one large hangar and several small “T hangars”, but unfortunately, the hangar was destroyed in the 1960s. Only a partial concrete slab of the hangar exists today.

Fortunately, the history of this historical airport still lives on today with Hidden Hangar Winery & Vineyard. There are touches of history and aviation everywhere you look. From model planes hanging from the ceiling to a plane wine bar, video footage, photos, and even the labels represent aviation.

The winemaker produces wine with a traditionalist approach and has a strong focus on rieslings. In addition, you can also find a variety of sweet summer wines such as peach and pineapple + peach wines, rosé, dry reds, and sparkling wine made with yeast. Needless to say, there is something for every palate at Hidden Hangar Winery & Vineyard.

Homestead Winery

Locations: Denison and Ivanhoe

Known For:  Being the first brew-winery in Texas, oldest and largest winery in North East Texas, and 100% Texas grapes.

My Favorite Wines:  Rose of Ivanhoe and Chocolate Rose

Tasting Price:  Five tastings of your choice for $7, but if you buy a bottle the tasting is complimentary.

Dining Options:  Connected to Devolli’s Italian restaurant.

Homestead Winery is the oldest and largest winery in Northeast Texas with over 30 years in the business. It is also the first brew-winery in Texas making it a one-stop destination for good wine and craft beer.

The Ivanhoe location is on the Parker family’s 100-year-old farm is the main production facility with a tasting room. Whereas the Denison location is a small tasting room adjacent to the brewery (where beer is produced on-site).

The wines are made from 100% Texas grapes – some come from the Parker family farm in Ivanhoe, Texoma, and the High Plains. Overall, Homestead Winery has a well-balanced wine list featuring dry reds and whites, sweet reds and whites, and one rosé.

When you visit Homestead Winery in Denison, make sure you ask for their special pickled jalapeño shooter! It is a “shot” of the Rose of Ivanhoe with pickled jalapeños on the bottom. The spiciness of the jalapeño and the sweetness of the wine pair perfectly together to create one of the most magical wine tastings you will ever experience.

Landon Winery

Locations: Greenville (main production facility), Grapevine, McKinney, Dallas, and Wylie.

Known For:  Being one of the largest wineries in Texas, the trademarked Texan wine, and single barrel-aged wines in spirit barrels.

My Favorite Wines:  Chardonnay Reserve, Chardonnay Tequila Barreled Unfiltered, Texan, Red Rose, and Raspberry Chocolate Finale.

Tasting Price:  Five wines of your choice or a guided tasting for $10.

Dining Options:  Light fare of charcuterie boards, artisanal flatbreads, chocolates, and more.

Landon Winery is one of the best wineries in North Texas as well as one of the largest in the entire state of Texas. There are five locations in North Texas, but the main production facility is in Greenville. You can purchase wine tastings, a glass of wine, and bottles of wine at every location, but you can only enjoy a unique barrel tasting tour in Greenville.

As one of the largest wineries in Texas, Landon Winery has one of the largest selection of wines. When you visit the tasting room in Greenville, it feels like you stepped into a beautiful library full of wines. The vast wine list has dry whites, dry reds, sweet wines, dessert wines, select barrel-aged wines, and Napa dry wines. With that said, a majority of grapes come from Texas with the exception of the few Napa dry wines.

One of the more unique wines in Landon Winery’s collection is the variety of select barrel-aged wines. The winemaker will take select grape varietals such as Chardonnay, and age it in a used spirit infused barrel. The result is unbelievable because you can truly taste and feel the different spirits being aged into the wine.

In addition, Landon Winery also features some “Just For Fun” options which include different mixtures of wine. For example, the Raspberry Chocolate Finale is a combination of their Raspberry wine with the Chocolate Finale. The result is a wonderful chocolate-covered raspberry in the form of wine. Furthermore, after 15 years in the wine business, Landon Winery has also begun to dabble with producing some incredible cider (available on tap in Greenville).

Lone Star Wine Cellars

Location: McKinney

Known For:  Being the “Cheers bar” in Downtown McKinney, finger-licking chicken wings, award-winning wines from “The Ranch Wines”, vast wine selection, and wine tasting options.

My Favorite Wines:  Grey Ghost, Whitetail, Reserve Axis, and White Goose.

Tasting Price:  There are five different tasting menus with four wines each varying between $10 – $12. There is an all-red tasting, all-white tasting, all-sweet tasting, and mixed tastings with both “The Ranch Wines” and outside wines.

Dining Options:  There are delicious house-made appetizers, flatbread pizza, sliders, wings, and cheese & charcuterie boards for purchase. Must order: the family recipe Bordelaise Wings and Pesto-sciutto Flatbread.

Lone Star Wine Cellars is a family-owned winery from the Ross family. The winery was established in 2003, but the history of winemaking in the family was established back in the 1920s. Wine must flow through the family’s blood because the wine produced from the Ross family is outstanding.

Lone Star Wine Cellars became the first winery in Historic Downtown McKinney and quickly gained the hearts of the community. The winery is well known as being the “Cheers bar” in Historic Downtown McKinney because of its strong local community and fun atmosphere.

In addition to the fine wine and strong community, people also love going to Lone Star Wine Cellars because of the house-made cuisine. Guests can easily come for one glass of wine but stay throughout the night. Before you know it, the one glass will turn into many alongside a delicious dinner.

Moreover, guests can also enjoy food and wine pairings based on house recommendations. The best pairing you must try is the Grey Ghost with Bordelaise Wings – absolutely outstanding!

The wine list offered at Lone Star Wine Cellars is vast making it one of the best wineries in North Texas. It includes wines produced on the Ross family ranch in addition to local wineries and wines from around the world. Since there are too many great wines to choose from, you can start with one of the many wine flights. The wine flights vary between all sweet, all red, all white, and a mix of Ross family’s “The Ranch Wines” and other wineries.

Lost Oak Winery

Location: Burleson

Known For:  100% Texas grapes, Holiday red wine (family secret blend), one of few female-owned wineries in Texas, 2.25-mile hiking trail, and wine tours around the world!

My Favorite Wines: Texas Duet, Petit Syrah, Blanc Du Bois, Orange Muscat, Sweet Duet, and I hear the Holiday wine is the most popular (only releases once a year around Thanksgiving).

Tasting Price:  Option of two different wine tastings – mixed dry or sweet. Both tastings include four wines for $10. In addition, there is also a winery tour that includes a guided tasting, and a premium tour with a wine and cheese pairing.

Dining Options:  Cheeses, charcuterie, hummus, crackers, and local products of popcorn, chocolates, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar.

Last Oak Winery is a family-owned and operated winery with a lot to offer on the 52-acre property. You can enjoy a guided wine tasting, hike the 2.25-mile trail, have a picnic on the lawn, tour the wine production facility, and more. Needless to say, you can easily spend your entire day at Lost Oak Winery.

On the property are cultivated vineyards and towering oak trees which provide beautiful scenery for a lovely picnic or view from the patio. Being encompassed by the oak trees with a glass of wine definitely makes you feel lost and miles away from all the hustle and bustle of the DFW metroplex. Hence the names, Lost Oak Winery.

The winemakers are some of the best in the country with over 100 award-winning wines under their name. Their strong focus is on dry wines and sweet wines. Therefore, the two wine tasting options include an all dry or all sweet wine tasting. To grasp the full scope of the winemakers’ talent, I definitely recommend trying both wine tastings.

Marker Cellars

Location: Alvord

Known For:  100% Texas grapes, craft cider using a wine making approach, and local cigars.

My Favorite Wines:  Viognier, Marker Mustcanelli, Syrah, and the most popular wine, Lightning Cabernet.

Tasting Price:  A choice of five wines for $8.

Dining Options:  Cheese & charcuterie, local pecans, hummus and chips, artichoke jalapeño dip, and sometimes food trucks on-site.

If you enjoy cigars and dry wine then you are going to love Marker Cellars. Moreover, Marker Cellars has a lot of uniqueness and tricks up their sleeves to be one of the best wineries in North Texas.

In addition to award-winning wine, Marker Cellars has some of the best cider in North Texas. The winemaker approaches the craft cider the same way he produces wine – he ages the cider in oak barrels. The result is so amazing, the craft cider sells out faster than he can produce it.

Marker Cellars also supplies guests with local cigars made by their neighbors, Global Premium Cigars. So you can enjoy your cigar on the patio and pair it with a glass of wine. Note: there are smoking and non-smoking areas.

As for the wine, Marker Cellars has a strong focus on dry red wines. Specifically, European grape varietals. However, there are also a handful of white and sweet wines. A wine you must try is their signature Lightning Cab. The winemaker hand selects whiskey barrels and then ages the cabernet until it is ready to be released. This wine is so special, the winemaker only releases it by a barrel at a time.

Location: Sunset

Known For:  100% Texas grapes, (sometimes) deer on premises, and concerts with cover bands.

My Favorite Wines:  Albarino, Tempranillo Winemaker Select, Zinfandel, Negroamaro, and Heartbreaker.

Dining Options:  A variety of cheese, charcuterie, and Mediterranean plates.

OG Cellars is a boutique winery located on 300 acres of land with 20 acres of vineyards and rolling hills. The drive alone to OG Cellars is breathtaking and when you arrive, you will find that this boutique winery is a hidden treasure of North Texas.

As a hidden treasure, OG Cellars is known for having frequent visitors but I am not talking about locals, I am talking about deer! Guests can be enjoying a glass of wine under the pergola and see deer grazing the fields. Or if you are lucky, you can watch deer eat the leftover pressed and juiced grapes from the winemaker.

Speaking of the winemaker, he uses 100% Texas grapes from the vineyard on-site as well as other surrounding areas of Texas. He approaches winemaking with Old-World techniques to allow the grapes to express its flavor. From single grape varietals to well-blended wines, and a variety of white, red, and sweet wines – there is a perfect wine for every palate at OG Cellars.

Sugar Ridge Winery

Location: Ennis

Known For:  Sweet wines, live music, along the Ennis Bluebonnet Trail, and a large and budget-friendly wine tasting experience.

My Favorite Wines:  Papa’s Peach and Little Green Apple.

Tasting Price:  Your choice of six wines for $6 or 15 wines for $15!!!

Dining Options:  An Italian-inspired bistro with menu options such as bruschetta, Italian pot pie, create your own flatbread, and tiramisu.

Sugar Ridge Winery is a family-friendly winery located near the beautiful Ennis Bluebonnet Trail. It is the perfect place to enjoy wine and cuisine after a wonderful day spent among the Ennis bluebonnets.

Moreover, this is the perfect winery for those with a sweet palate. Sugar Ridge Winery is well known for its delicious and refreshing sweet wines. In fact, more than half of their wines are sweet! If you do not like sweet wines, do not worry. They also feature a few dry reds that are also fantastic.  

In addition to being well known for its sweet wines, Sugar Ridge Winery is also popular for live music, fun girls night out, and karaoke nights. Local musicians of all genres will perform at the winery and on the first Saturday of the month, guests can have their opportunity to be the live music during karaoke night.

TF Vineyard & Winery

Location: Boyd

VineCrafters Winery is a boutique winery outside the owners’ backyard. What started as a hobby, quickly grew into a passion, and eventually a business.

Roe Ann and Leo first started producing fine Texan wine for their friends and family to enjoy. After a few years, Leo was producing wine faster than their friends and family could drink it. So with the encouragement of their loved ones, VineCrafters Winery was established.

As a boutique winery in their backyard, VineCrafters is all about making wine and having a good time with the local community. Guests can relax outside, walk around the property, and explore the vineyards and goats on-site. Yes, goats!

In addition to crafting fantastic wine, VineCrafters Winery also produces goat cheese from their goats and grows pears and figs. The goat cheese, pears, and figs are all components you can find on their delicious cheese boards, which pairs perfectly with the wine.

Great Restaurants in North Texas

(UPDATED NOVEMBER 2022) My Texas travels have evolved into a four-month RV journey all over the state. We spent a lot of time in North Texas, where we sometimes explored a different small-town daily. With so many incredible restaurants to choose from, and so many small towns to sort through, I wrote this post to help you plan some fun day trips and where to eat while you are there. I give you a restaurant guide to North Texas, an area waiting to be a gracious host and delicious dining choices.

Dallas: Smoky Rose

Looking at TripAdvisor for Dallas restaurant reviews, be prepared to turn out 3,576 of them. That’s how many dining establishments that are in this thriving city. Luckily, a local friend, Mike of The Nomadic Texan , took me to one of the best.

Smoky Rose  is a hip restaurant with a great covered outdoor patio and superb service. We began our lunch with the Smoked Brisket Queso with tortilla chips that were right up there with some of the best queso ever. IF I had not been dining with a friend that I was just now meeting, I might have licked the bowl clean. 

I had a pulled pork quesadilla for my main course, packed full of caramelized onions and jalapeños, with sides of salsa and sour cream—even enough to take home part of it for a snack later. Smoky Rose has a killer cocktail and margarita menu, but the sangrias were the tempting option for me.

Valet parking is offered at this Tex-Mex restaurant, a great perk.

Frisco: Mash’D

Frisco is one of my favorite cities in North Texas, and it’s no surprise that there are so many incredible places to eat there. My favorite was  Mash’D , a high-energy eatery that serves hand-crafted cocktails in Mason jars and moonshine flights to enhance your meal. 

The Chicken Fried Pepperoni will most likely be one of the most enjoyable appetizers you’ve ever sunk your teeth in. I asked for the recipe, but it was a big, fat no. The classic Fried Chicken, Bootleg Ribs, and Mash’D Meatloaf are excellent options for main course suggestions. Check out Mash’D’s weekend brunch or happy hour.

Garland: Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

Flying Saucer  is a fun and tasty chain taproom we first discovered in  Nashville  at the Union Station Hotel. Visit for the food and drink, and then peruse the crazy collection of plates and outer space decor. 

Have the Saucer Dipster sandwich: shaved roast beef on a tasty roll with melted Swiss cheese. The stout au jus (dipping juice) is rich and perfect for dipping the billowy bread in. For a sharing plate, try the Loaded Rocket Tots. They are fried golden brown with fresh jalapeños and dotted with goat cheese, crispy bacon, and green onions.

Then, a drool-worthy fried egg is laid across the top. How fabulous does that sound? The Flying Saucer also serves German-inspired dishes and loads of craft beers.

Grapevine: Chez Fabien’s Main Street Bistro

I’m a creature of habit and keep going back to the same places for the same dishes. Do you do that? In Grapevine, also known as the Christmas Capital of Texas, I can’t pass up a chance to eat at  Chez Fabien’s Main Street Bistro . So many delicious things on the menu, primarily French-inspired and homemade to perfection. 

I order the Croque Monsieur with a divine mornay sauce and melted Gruyère cheese across the top. It is definitely a knife and fork sandwich. Chez Fabien’s Caesar salad with brioche croutons is another tasty choice, with a tangy and wonderful dressing.

Save room for one of the specialty desserts, such as the Strawberry Romanov crepe or profiteroles.

Greenville: TaMolly’s Mexican Restaurant

If you are in Arkansas or Texas, you may see  TaMolly’s Mexican Restaurants  throughout a few cities, and they are worth stopping for. Get all your favorite Tex-Mex favorites at this vibrant restaurant with an overload of colorful lights and fun painted murals and decor.

I loved that you could order a trio of dips at TaMolly’s, which we happily did. The appetizer features fried tortilla cups of yellow queso, guacamole, and Queso Blanco. All three were good, and it was nice to have a selection. 

I’d been waiting for months to see puffy tacos on a Texas menu, and I found them here. TaMolly’s also has really good chicken poblano and chicken tortilla soups. If it’s Mexican or Tex-Mex, chances are you will find it on the menu here, but something cool I’d mention is that the lunch specials are available all day for only $1 more after the lunch cut-off time. That’s a real money saver right there.

Irving: The Ranch at Las Colinas

You can travel the country and probably not find more than a handful of restaurants as good as  The Ranch at Las Colinas . This iconic Texas eatery is huge and has a reputation to match. Seating hundreds of people and offering several private or separate dining areas, The Ranch is a mix of casual and sophisticated. Its staff is well-versed in proper table service and has a vast knowledge of the menu, food, and drink.

The Ranch’s wine room and menu are in a league of their own. 

Offering farm-to-fork local cuisine and honkin’ big hand-cut juicy steaks, farm-raised Texas beef, that is. The Ranch has something for everyone, and it’s bigger and better here. I recommend Mini Elk Taco and Lump Crab Dip, served with grilled flatbread, though you can’t go wrong with Queso Blanco and chips. Pair those with a Cadillac margarita or frozen Texas Tea (a Long Island Tea with sangria).

My pick for steaks is the garlic stuffed filet with peppered bourbon butter, which I’m drooling just thinking about how tasty this steak was. If you have a hearty steak appetite and feel brave, try the 33 oz. Wagyu Tomahawk Ribeye served with roasted bone marrow butter.

Other excellent dinner choices at this Irving restaurant include blackened red snapper, smoked fried chicken, and chipotle meatloaf. Save a smidgeon of room for the fried pies dessert, with flavors that change daily. I had carrot cake with a side of caramel sauce, and they were to die for!

Enjoy live music in the Ranch pavilion with artists from Austin to Amarillo on Tuesday through Saturday.

McKinney: LAYERED

I love when a restaurant has easy-to-remember hours, such as daily 8 AM to 2 PM, serving breakfast and lunch, which is just what  LAYERED , in McKinney, has. And I also love it when I’m blown away by something unique at a restaurant. Enter the robot delivery gal at this eclectic eatery. 

I met a friend for breakfast at LAYERED and loved the elevated cafe foods menu. The sweet potato hash was a perfect option for me, with bacon, onion, peppers, and jalapeños. Other menu items range from tacos to toasts, salads to chicken & waffles.

Another item I contemplated was the Shakshuka Skillet, an Israeli dish that sounded heavenly. When the robot brings it to your table, have your camera ready to get photos of this unique offering no matter what you order. We loved it!

Reservations are recommended at LAYERED, especially on weekends.

Mount Vernon: Cotton Belt BBQ

You quickly learn that gas station restaurants in Texas have really good food. Case in point,  Cotton Belt BBQ  at the TA Express Travel Center in Mount Vernon. 

It was nice having a quick stop for lunch that was affordable and only took about 20 minutes, start to finish. I had the two-meat plate (turkey and pulled pork) with green beans and mac & cheese. Other side options are sweet or mashed potatoes, sautéed carrots, vegetables, mushrooms, fried okra, rosemary potatoes, and baked or pinto beans. Every bite was really good, and the bbq sauce was not too sweet or tangy.

Cotton Belt BBQ serves breakfast and is most popular during prime meal times.

Plano: Jorg’s Cafe Vienna

I was thrilled to see a German restaurant in Plano, so we put it at the top of our to-do list. We arrived for lunch at  Jorg’s Cafe Vienna  and realized we barely got a seat, so reservations are recommended. The setting is lively and fun, plus there is so much to look at. When our pretzel with a southern Austrian cheese spread arrived, our table looked like it should be in Bavaria rather than North Texas. 

I enjoyed the sautéed Oma’s Paprika Pork Schnitzel dish for lunch. I appreciated the option to have it served as deep-fried (as traditionally done) or sautéed, paired with Spätzle noodles and braised red cabbage. My husband had the Oktoberfest Bratwurst…another tasty choice.

Consider the apple strudel to crave your sweet tooth if you can still move.

Please note that Jorg’s is closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Richardson: Pappasito’s Cantina

You’ve probably seen  Pappasito’s Cantina  around the Lone Star State and in airports. This lively spot is the perfect place to enjoy Tex-Mex favorites and great margaritas. Pappasito’s Chile con queso is super creamy and addictive, with crisp, lightly-fried tortilla chips. 

My husband and I split the Chicken Fajitas because it is big enough for two. The chunks of chicken are full of flavor and moist, while the side of melted butter is nice for dunking the wrapped concoction in. I’ve never been served butter like this at a Mexican restaurant before, so I’m not sure how or why it is included. But it’s darned tasty.

Thirsty? Ranch water, spicy pineapple mules, watermelon, agave, or plain margaritas are on the drink menu.

Rockwall: Rosa’s Cafe & Tortilla Factory

Wow, Texas has so many chain Tex-Mex or Mexican restaurants that you could eat at one every day, no matter where you travel. Rosa’s Cafe is one of the quick-serve places we’ve fallen in love with for the taste, self-serve drinks, salsa bar, and warm, perfectly crisp tortilla chips.

Rosa’s Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and even has family meals for money-saving and convenience. There are also daily specials and several choices for desserts. My husband is a fan of the hard shell tacos (rice, beans, and warm flour tortillas), while I prefer the Smothered Burrito topped with chili con carne and zesty nacho cheese.

Sachse: Osaka Hibachi Sushi Bar

Some days you just want a Japanese-style lunch. Am I right? On this day, we happened to be in Sachse, one of our favorite North Texas towns. We wandered into  Osaka Hibachi Sushi Bar  to find a beautifully decorated restaurant with attentive staff and a tantalizing Japanese, Ramen, and sushi menu. 

We both ended up with the Hibachi grill lunch choices, though Bento boxes were close contenders. I had the chicken & filet mignon, while he had just chicken. We both opted for fried rice, a $2 uncharge. Lunch specials are available Monday through Friday and include soup, vegetables, and salad.

We’ve eaten at many Japanese restaurants in our life, and this one was one of the best. The meats’ quality was top-notch, and I give my meal a 10/10.

Wylie: Frankie’s Casa

Frankie’s Casa Mexican Cuisine  was so good that we went two days in a row and got it for take home on another. This cute little place is full of life and energy, with separate dining areas and a great outdoor patio. We prefer the bar area, which is also perfect for watching football. 

The queso is a must, with spinach in it, a first for us. You can also add brisket, ground beef, or sausage for an additional charge. The dish that hooked me was Mexican Lasagna, the first time I’d seen this on a Mexican restaurant menu too.

Picture this—layered tortillas with chicken fajita, mole, corn, and beans, with a poblano cream sauce. Then (it gets better), the whole slice is drizzled with pico and queso. Oh my, this is one dish you won’t want to miss. My husband was more a fan of the $7.50 jalapeño margaritas.

There are three Frankie’s locations: Garland, Sachse, and Wylie. Check out the weekend brunch from 11 AM-3 PM.

Small roads, big skies, and wide-open spaces as far as the eye can see: these are just a few of the cool things to see in the Texas Panhandle Plains!

Located in northwest Texas, this often-overlooked region of the Lone Star State is quintessentially Texas, featuring the seemingly never-ending plains that many non-Texans associate with our state.

If you’re passing through, though, it’s worth stopping to appreciate some of the Texas Panhandle attractions that make this corner of Texas well worth a look.

Fun Things to Do in the Texas Panhandle

Drive route 66..

Texas’ portion of Route 66 may only stretch for 179 miles, but it packs quite the punch!

Featuring cool ghost towns, quirky roadside attractions, and even the Midpoint of the full Route 66 drive (it’s in Adrian, Texas), driving Route 66 is one of the absolute best Texas Panhandle attractions.

While you can easily drive the route in a single day, it’s much more fun to make a weekend of it and spend the night in Amarillo along the way.

Go for a hike in Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon on Texas”, Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the USA and one of the best places to visit in the Panhandle!

While there are plenty of hikes and viewpoints to choose from, be sure not to miss the hike to the famous (and gorgeous) lighthouse formation while you’re there.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located just off of Route 66 and right next door to Amarillo, making it an easy addition to most trips to the Panhandle.

Visit the International Waterlily Collection in San Angelo.

Did you know that one of the world’s most impressive waterlily collections is located in the Texas Panhandle Plains?

Located right along the Concho River, this peaceful park is a hidden gem in the often dusty plains, and definitely worth a visit!

Snap photos at Cadillac Ranch.

Texas’ portion of Route 66 is home to many quirky roadside attractions, but none is as iconic as Cadillac Ranch !

Featuring 10 Cadillacs lined up in the desert with their front ends buried in the sand and thousands of layers of spray paint coating every inch of them, there’s no doubt that Cadillac Ranch it’s one of those sights that you simply have to see to believe!

If you’re so inclined, you can buy a can of spray paint to add your own touch to the art as well–but be sure to photograph your work, because it will almost certainly be painted over again within a day or two.

Hike the famous Tunnel Trail.

Have you ever wanted to explore an abandoned railroad tunnel?

Add the popular Tunnel Trail to your list of what to do in the Texas Panhandle, and you can!

Clarity Tunnel is located near Caprock Canyons State Park and makes for a memorable hike.

In addition to the history and views, the tunnel is also home to around 500,000 Mexican free-tailed bats from April to October each year.

Stop by the American Windmill Museum.

If there’s one manmade structure that you associate with visiting the Panhandle… there’s a good chance that it is windmills.

This quirky museum in Lubbock features more than 160 windmills, and the collection is quite a memorable sight!

Check out the Wichita Falls Waterfall.

When you think of visiting the Panhandle Plains, waterfalls probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind–but one of the most memorable waterfalls in Texas is located in Wichita Falls!

At 54-feet tall, the multi-level waterfall is well worth a visit when in the area.

Is it natural?

Kind of… but no.

The original Wichita Falls that the city was named for were natural, but they washed away in a flood back in the 19th century.

Today’s artificial waterfall is a homage to them, and a fun road trip stop as well!

Visit the official Texas Bison Herd in Caprock Canyons State Park.

With nearly 90 miles worth of trails and plenty of beautiful, rugged scenery, Caprock Canyons State Park has long been a favorite among Texas hikers.

You’ll also find the official Texas Bison Herd living in this park–and may even be caught up in a bison traffic jam if they choose to cross the road in front of you.

Learn about a unique landscape at Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument.

Sought after by humans for more than 13,000 years, the flint located in Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument was once vital to the survival of many people.

This is one of the most unique places to visit in the Texas Panhandle, and a great opportunity to learn about the history of the region.

Join a Ranger-led hike to dive deep into the history of the area, or simply enjoy the beautiful views!

Pay a visit to the Buddy Holly Center.

In the 1950s, Lubbock local Buddy Holly brought pride to his hometown with his successful rock n’ roll music career that included repeatedly opening for Elvis Presley himself!

Sadly, the promising musician had his life tragically cut short by a 1959 plane crash.

Today, you can explore the story of Buddy Holly, as well as the larger story of music in Lubbock and beyond, at the Buddy Holly Center in downtown Lubbock.

Spot local wildlife at Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge.

Stretching across 6,440 acres of grassland prairie, Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge is the oldest wildlife refuge in Texas, and a fun place to visit in the Panhandle!

It’s a wonderful place to spot wildlife, especially migratory birds (it is particularly known for its population of lesser sandhill cranes when they pass through during migration).

There are two very short trails in the park, but it is mostly known for its wildlife, not hiking.

The refuge is open 24/7 and is free to visit.

Try your hand at a steak-eating contest.

Think you have a big appetite?

If so, consider hitting up the Big Texan Steak Ranch for their 72 oz. steak challenge , one of the most infamous things to do in the Texas Panhandle!

If you take the challenge, you’ll need to sit on a small stage-like table at the front of the restaurant as you (try to) eat a 72 oz. steak, plus fixings, in less than an hour.

If you succeed, the meal is free.

If not, prepare to cough up $72.

Even if food challenges aren’t your thing, though, this utterly unmistakable and over-the-top restaurant/roadside attraction combination is well worth a stop while in the area.

Explore the official “Storybook Capital of America”.

Did you know that Abilene, Texas is the official Storybook Capital of America?

The city is known for being the home of the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, as well as an incredible collection of storybook-themed statues that you can find around town!

From Stuart Little to Charlotte and Wilbur to many Dr. Seuss characters and beyond, beautiful sculptures of childhood favorites can be found all around Abilene.

Where is the Texas Panhandle Plains?

Sure, everyone knows that the Texas Panhandle is located in the upper-left corner of the state–but the region technically stretches beyond the “square” at the top of Texas!

The Texas Panhandle Plains region reaches further south than Abilene and as far east as Wichita Falls, taking up a solid portion of northwest Texas.

Lubbock, Abilene, San Angelo, and Amarillo all fall solidly within the Panhandle Plains region.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in the Texas Panhandle Plains, any of those cities are an excellent place to start.

Restaurants

North Austin is a go-to for families and groups who are looking for bigger restaurants, more parking and options for all tastes. Heat things up with spicy, authentic Thai food from  Thai Kun .  For Vietnamese specialties like banh xeo or bun cha Hanoi, head to family-owned Ng Cafe . Authentic Chinese dishes starring handmade noodles are on the menu at Julie’s Noodles , as well as an assortment of dumplings. I t may come as a surprise, but while the main destinations that may come to mind when you think of the Lone Star State are places like Dallas, Houston, or Austin, there’s actually a ton lot more to Texas than meets the eye! If you’re a nature lover, you’ve got to check out these amazing places to visit in Texas if you love the outdoors!

The Lone Star State is a fabulous destination for all things nature, be it pristine beaches, otherworldly-looking rock formations, rugged ranches, massive caverns, and sky-high mountains. It’s also a huge state. Whether you’re traveling by car and selecting a smaller region of the state, or flying from one major city to another, there’s so much to see. Sleep under the stars, see fields of the Bluebonnet state flower or make a trip to the beach. Put in simple words, Texas has a bit of everything when it comes to the outdoors.

15 Places To Visit In Texas If You’re Outdoorsy

My recommendation is to pick one or two of these places to visit in Texas and not to overwhelm yourself. It’s a big state. If you want to see the whole state and really explore Texas, carve out a week. Beach hopping is easy because you can drive along the coast and see if the different beaches. The middle of the state is harder because there’s more agriculture between the major cities.

Padre Island National Seashore

Did you know Texas is home to the largest undeveloped barrier island in the entire world? While you would expect it to be sitting somewhere in the Pacific or on the Caribbean, it’s actually located on the coast of Texas and it’s named Padre Island! As part of the National Parks system, Padre Island National Seashore is a great way to see the island.

Dividing the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre, this 130,434-acre seashore is home to a ton of different landscapes ranging from enormous sand dunes to untouched grasslands and contains just about everything you could wish for in a beachside escapade.

There are some very remote areas of the park where you can experience solitude in this natural landscape: Little Shell Beach, Big Shell Beach, Yarborough Pass, and Mansfield Channel. These areas can only be reached by driving along the beach.

Aside from its unparalleled beauty, there’s a ton to do at South Padre Island National Seashore. In its menu of activities, you’ll find camping, bird-watching (about half of North American migratory birds make stops here), four-wheeler cruises around the island, and turtle release missions! Little explorers can earn a badge by participating in the Junior Ranger program and completing the park’s activity book.

Big Bend National Park

As one of the largest national parks in the United States, Big Bend National Park is a haven for gorgeous views, wildlife sightings galore, and a ton of activities to fully get to know its varied terrain as well as some of the most iconic views in Texas when it comes to natural landscapes.

A few of the can’t miss activities while exploring Big Bend National Park include walking along the Rio Grande River, exploring the Chihuahuan Desert, seeing massive towering cliffs, hiking in search of the best vistas of the Chisos Mountains, and hiking to see The Window, the most emblematic view at Big Bend if not entire Texas!

The park boasts more types of birds, bats, butterflies, ants, and scorpions than any other national park in the United States. The varied habitats make is an amazing destination to see different types of wildlife.

It’s also the best destination to see Bluebonnet flowers, with its own Big Bend Bluebonnet species – the largest of all bluebonnets. Blooms happen a little earlier than elsewhere in the state: February through March.

Enchanted Rock

Located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Enchanted Rock is the second-largest granite dome in the country and one of the most sought-after natural landmarks in the state due to its humongous size and its pink hues.

Hiking is one of the best ways to explore the surroundings at Enchanted Rock and another wonderful way to experience the area is by overnighting here. The area is considered Dark Sky territory, which essentially means there’s no light pollution anywhere nearby, making stargazing a true treat!

Caverns of Sonora

Formed from limestone several million years ago, exploring the Caverns of Sonora will make you feel as though you’re inside an Indiana Jones set. It’s known as Earth’s most revered underground treasures.

Located near the city of Sonora, this massive cave is actually home to one of the biggest collections of calcite crystals in the entire world, with some sections of it being so heavily packed with these formations that they make it look as though its walls belong inside an entirely different planet. 

Go 155 feet below the surface and take a tour of the caverns. There are several different tour to pick from. Be prepared for a physically challenging experience with plenty of stairs, but the crystals are some of the most beautiful to see.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Texas was once submerged underwater, and even though that may feel a bit hard to believe, a visit to Guadalupe Mountains National Park will change your mind.

In fact, the park is considered one of the world’s best examples of a fossil reef from the Premium Era. While visiting, you’ll get to see tons of fossils encapsulated in rocks, all of which are from underwater creatures!

Other activities to do at the Guadalupe Mountains include hiking, birdwatching, horseback riding, feeling as though you traveled back in time by visiting El Capitan Peak in search of beautiful views and pioneer wagon trails, and seeing Guadalupe Peak, which is the highest point in Texas as over 8,000 feet!

Colorado Bend State Park

Offering incredibly scenic views and natural beauty galore, Colorado Bend State Park is one of the most sought-after natural attractions in the state for one reason: Gorman Falls, an impressive 60-foot waterfall that cascades into a grotto blanketed in ferns!

To get there, you’ll need to hike 1.5. miles through beautiful ranch country, down a pretty rocky path, and a pretty slippery moss-covered stairway, but the views of this beautiful waterfall are guaranteed to be worth the trek!

Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island is a 4,000-acre gem and one of my favorite places to visit in Texas. Mustang Island State Park is at the southern end of the 18-mile-long Mustang Island and it’s home to over 400 species of birds. The best time to visit is during spring and fall migrations. If you’re not into birding, it also offers some of the best fishing in Texas. A unique way to see the park is by paddling the Mustang Island State Park Paddling Trail. The 20 miles of trails pass through some of the best shallow-water fishing areas in Texas. You’ll see tons of native wildlife!

It’s a great destination if you’re on a budget. The park has 50 primitive campsites. Sleep by the beach enjoy a couple of days of beachcombing, swimming, and paddling.

Palo Duro State Park

As the second largest canyon in the United States, Palo Duro State Park is often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. This is one of the best places to visit in Texas if you’re a shutterbug. It’s a stunning backdrop for photos.

Aside from the jaw-dropping views of the canyon itself, what makes it extra special are the multicolored sandstone formations you’ll find all over the park, be it through hiking, biking, or horseback riding across its 30 miles worth of trails.

Another must-do activity to do while at Palo Duro is staying the night. Camping is possible here, but we recommend trying out a “glamping” experience while here instead! Each glamping site is fully furnished with air conditioning, luxury rustic furnishings, refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, games, bicycles, gas grills and gas fire pits, covered porches with porch swings.

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

If your idea of being outdoors is a bit more manicured, head to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden . It’s a natural escape in the middle of the big city. It’s 66 acres total and voted one of the best botanical gardens in the country.

I love their ornamental garden, A Tasteful Place, if you want to learn about eating fresh, sustainable, locally-grown food. Enjoy three free daily tastings made with seasonal produce, cooking demos and more. Another great area is their Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden. Children can connect with nature through 8 acres of beautiful play space that educates and inspires.

Dinosaur Valley State Park

Just a short drive from Fort Worth and you can see where the dinosaurs roamed. Dinosaur Valley State Park is one of the best places to visit in Texas as an outdoorsy family. Long ago, the dinosaurs lived near the Paluxy River in Texas.

Ride a horse and look for dinosaur tracks, but you have to look closely because sometimes they’re in the riverbeds. Park rangers can help guests find the tracks on guided tours. Other park activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and fishing. One of the coolest things to do is use the park’s app. Download the app before your park visit and map out the dinosaur tracks that you find!

Fort Worth Water Gardens

It’s hard to find zen within big cities, but you can find some at the Fort Worth Water Gardens . It’s a beautiful and refreshing oasis near the convention center. While it’s not a green space, it’s a gorgeous place to unwind and take in some fresh air if you’re in the city. Designed by Philip Johnson, the Fort Worth Water Gardens is an architectural and engineering marvel to be enjoyed any time of the year. It’s an urban park unlike any other that you’re sure to admire.

Carleen Bright Arboretum

Located in Woodway, Texas, the Carleen Bright Arboretum extends over 16 acres that are home to lovely botanical gardens. It’s a family-friendly outdoor space where even leashed dogs are welcome. Botanical gardens, reflection ponds, fountains and nature trails make it a great destination to visit. Don’t miss the popular cactus garden and roses. Walk the Todd Willis Nature Trail and feel surrounded by woodland nature. It’s a great way to spend a half-day.

Big Thicket National Preserve

SouthEast Texas is home to multiple habitats and Big Thicket National Preserve protects them. Hiking trails and waterways meander through nine different ecosystems where guests can see all types of life. Explore longleaf pine forests and breathtaking cypress-lined bayous.

The preserve doesn’t offer any formal campsites, but instead welcomes campers to backcountry camping. You’ll need to hike or paddle in with all of your supplies. Camping is allowed in the woods, at least 500 feet from roads, trails, and the park boundary. It’s a true, very primitive, camping experience.

Daingerfield State Park

Daingerfield State Park is known for ginormous tall trees. Walk the forest trails and feel teeny tiny under the canopy of trees. You’ll see pines, oaks, and dogwoods.  There’s also an 80-acre lake in the park where you can swim, paddle or fish. Combine the lake with hiking and walk the Rustling Leaves Trail, it’s a 2.4-mile easy hike around the lake.

If you want to make it an overnight trip, reserve a historic cabin. Two cabins are four-person, one is six-person, and the Bass Lodge sleeps up to 15 people. All cabins have bathrooms and kitchens.

Galveston’s sun-kissed beaches make it the perfect spot for outdoor fun. It’s one of the best places to visit in Texas if you love paddling. The island ecosystem harbors are unique and house precious wildlife. Head to Galveston Island State Park, which is the region’s go-to destination for nature lovers. Bring your kayak (or rent one) and paddle along one of their three trails. The water on the trails is usually calm, which is great for paddling, along with fishing out on the water. Check out the paddling trails:

• Paddle on wide expanses of open water on the Dana Cove Trail (2.8 miles)
• Get close-up views of shorebirds on the Jenkins Bayou Trail (2.9 miles)
• Hit the more challenging Oak Bayou Trail (4.2 miles) and paddle among secluded bayous, open coves, and seagrass beds.

Where are the cicadas? Use this interactive map to find Brood XIX, Brood XIII in 2024

In a few weeks, over a dozen states will be abuzz as trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from their yearslong underground stay.

Broods XIX and XIII will emerge in a combined 17 states, mostly in the Midwest and Southeast, in a rare, double brood event . These two broods last emerged together 221 years ago, and after this year are not predicted to do so again until 2245.

Once conditions are right, the two broods will emerge in massive numbers to feed, make noise, mate and die. Here's what to know about where to find the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII.

The two cicada broods will emerge in a combined 17 states across the Southeast and Midwest, with an overlap in parts of Illinois and Iowa. They will emerge once soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in mid-May and lasting through late June.

The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a periodical cicada?

Both the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII are periodical cicadas, which emerge every 13 or 17 years across North America. They differ from annual cicadas, which emerge every year.

You may remember the last periodical brood to emerge in huge numbers: the 17-year Brood X that was found in 2021 throughout the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard.

Annual cicadas, which are dark green to black with green wing veins, are  typically larger than periodical cicadas , which are recognizable for their red eyes, red legs and red wing veins, according to North Carolina State University Extension.

Periodical cicadas emerge earlier, usually in mid-to-late May as opposed to annual cicadas in July and August. According to North Carolina State University Extension, annual cicadas begin mating, " singing conspicuously " and lying eggs about two weeks after they emerge. Their first nymphs will fall to the ground and begin feeding on roots under the soil, and fully-developed nymphs will emerge two years later and molt into adults.

Above ground, periodical cicadas have a similar life cycle, appear in much larger numbers and are much louder. At the end of their season, the next generation of nymphs move underground and remain for either 13 or 17 years.

Tracking Abortion Bans Across the Country

Twenty-one states ban abortion or restrict the procedure earlier in pregnancy than the standard set by Roe v. Wade, which governed reproductive rights for nearly half a century until the Supreme Court overturned the decision in 2022.

In some states, the fight over abortion access is still taking place in courtrooms, where advocates have sued to block bans and restrictions. Other states have moved to expand access to abortion by adding legal protections.

Latest updates

• The Arizona state legislature voted to repeal an 1864 ban on nearly all abortions. Officials warned that the near-total ban may be briefly enforceable this summer until the repeal takes effect in the fall. A 15-week ban remains in effect.
• A ban on abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy took effect in Florida , following a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court that the privacy protections of the state’s Constitution do not extend to abortion.

The New York Times is tracking abortion laws in each state after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , which ended the constitutional right to an abortion.

Where abortion is legal

In a few states that have enacted bans or restrictions, abortion remains legal for now as courts determine whether these laws can take effect. Abortion is legal in the rest of the country, and many states have added new protections since Dobbs.

As of 4 p.m. on June 24, the state attorney general had issued a statement saying the state’s abortion ban had been triggered, but it had not yet been authorized by the legislature’s general counsel.
